Happiness Equals Wellness JANUARY MARKS THE START OF A NEW YEAR, AND I HOPE THE MAJORITY OF THOSE OUT THERE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO IT! 2020 will be a fresh set of opportunities where one can put their best foot forward. I was having a conversation

with a friend a few months ago and they mentioned something that stuck with me. “If you have your health, that is more than half the battle. You wake up healthy and that’s a good day.” Looking at my own experiences in life, I realize this is only partly true. A positive attitude can also play a major role. So even if you don’t have your health for one reason or another, you can try your hardest to maintain a positive attitude no matter what curve ball life may throw at you. The January issue focuses on health and wellness, both physical and spiritual. This month, Minneapolis Lakes spoke with the team at Anda Spa in Hotel Ivy and discussed the recent renovation and fabulous treatments now being offered. It’s about the whole spa experience or “journey” which focuses on healing both the body and mind. We interviewed the Jinx Tea team about the unique teas they offer, combined with the added health

IT'S ALL ABOUT FAMILY

Minneapolis Lakes | January 2020

IT’S NOT JUST BUSINESS; IT’S FAMILY FOR RED COW OWNERS TRACY BACHUL AND LUKE SHIMP ALONG WITH SONS MICHAEL, DIRECTOR OF FINANCE, AND PETER, CONTROLLER, WHO ALL SHARE THE LOVE OF A GOOD BURGER. The popular, neighborhood restaurant started on those very premises, creating a family legacy. Celebrating seven years in business with their first Red Cow location on 50th & France in Edina this year, the vision of creating a welcoming, neighborhood restaurant at their own kitchen table quickly became the biggest family they could have ever dreamed of. Now, with four Red Cow locations throughout the Twin Cities (others you can find in Uptown, North Loop and St. Paul) and an additional Italian concept, Red Rabbit, with two locations (North Loop and St. Paul), business is booming and the Red Cow and Red Rabbit family are growing. “We value relationships and our talented leaders and staff are just like family to us,” says Bachul. “We all work together supporting and celebrating each other.” You will find at every location a warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere that feels just like being at home. “We wanted to create a place that friends and family could gather and enjoy a good meal together, just like being around a family kitchen table,” says Shimp. Each location is chosen with purpose. Finding a great neighborhood in the Twin Cities and to have parking available. This makes it easy for customers to stop in for lunch, happy hour, dinner or a quick bite without a hassle. The menu doesn’t bring a selection of ordinary burgers; it brings creative, flavorful creations to the table. Long-time friend and Culinary Director, Trevis Langley, knows burgers and has stepped up the burger game with the Red Cow signature 60/40 burger and creation of the award-winning Double Barrel burger. Both burgers are worthy to be on your must-try list. You will also find other CONTINUED >

delicious award-winning menu items such as the turkey burger and chips & onion dip. And of course, plenty of plant-based options such as the So Cal burger made with an Impossible™ patty, a variety of salads and the Buffalo Cauliflower. Not only does Red Cow bring the burgers, it also brings a fantastic cocktail and wine selection. A thoughtfully curated wine and cocktail menu was created to pair nicely with the menu from the classics to custom cocktails, and a wide-ranged flavorful wine variety. There’s something for everyone to compliment a meal. As a family-run business philanthropy is also a big part of this legacy. “We always want to give back to the community,” says Bachul. “It’s important that our customers know how much we value their business and that we do our part to give-back.” Every year Red Cow donates over $100,000 to local charities and communities such as the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital, The Aliveness Project, and local schools and sports teams. “We are excited for the future and what that holds,” says Shimp. “Being able to bring more neighborhoods a fun, inviting place to gather, while enjoying a good meal.” For more information on Red Cow and Red Rabbit dining, visit redcowmn.com or redrabbitmn.com.

OWL OPTICAL IS MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

ARTICLE BRITT JOHNSEN | PHOTOGRAPHY LESLIE PLESSER

26

Minneapolis Lakes | January 2020

IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT FOR JULIE AND CHRIS HANSEN. The husband-wife duo behind the Linden Hills eyewear boutique Owl Optical actually met in a local eyeglass shop. Julie, who was a fashion student at the University of Minnesota, was working. Chris was a customer. “I like your boots,” she said to Chris, who bought black plastic-framed Lafonts. More than 20 years later, together they have two sons, a Siberian Husky and their dream business. The couple’s business creation is a work of art — fitting for both Julie, a fashion expert, and Chris, who has a background in art and graphic design. When you walk into the full-service eyewear boutique, the Hansens’ artistic backgrounds show, with bright blue walls, decor with modern and vintage touches, and the best, most unique glasses you can find in the region. The couple scours the world to find designers that carry quality products, going as far as places like New York and Milan to soak up industry news and trends, and to find eyewear that will resonate with their customers. Beyond the quality frames, what also sets Owl Optical apart is their customized service. Julie says she will intently study

Think of it like a “Queer Eye” makeover, only with a small but mighty team of the Hansens and their two employees rather than the “fab five” of the popular Netflix show. But it’s the same level of high-quality, personalized styling that people have come to love and

“We like to make sure that everyone gets our undivided, full attention,” Julie said. “We want to work with people to have them look incredible, but also to feel comfortable when they leave.”

The boutique opened its doors in 2012. The couple’s approach is working, as the business has thrived since it began. They still see customers who came in right when the store opened and have the same frames they bought seven years ago. “It was a jump, and we said, this is it, this is going to work,” Chris said. “And within six months, I quit my job.” The Hansens offer a little bit of everything at the shop. Whether it’s trendy frames ranging from chunky to thin in size or something in between, there is something for everyone’s sense of style. “It’s become like jewelry for your face,” Julie said. “It really makes an outfit, it makes a person.”

ANDA SPA TAKES WELLNESS TO A NEW LEVEL

ARTICLE BRITT JOHNSEN PHOTOGRAPHY JIM KRUGER

Minneapolis Lakes | January 2020

ANDA SPA IS NOT YOUR ORDINARY LUXURY WELLNESS SPA. The new spa and fitness club took over what had previously been the Ivy Spa Club back in December 2018, part of Hotel Ivy, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Minneapolis. The owners decided to completely renovate the place, investing more than three million dollars into a floor-to-ceiling rebrand, said LeAnne Erickson, Anda Spa’s Director. What had previously been a respected but traditional spa has become a truly unique holistic healing haven. Many services involve some sort of crystal healing, whether you’re getting a Gemstone Rebalancing Facial, a rose quartz-infused bath soak or a Himalayan Salt Stone Massage. When guests arrive, they can expect to see in the welcome area a 68-pound rose quartz crystal, sourced from Madagascar. In what’s called the Quartz Spa, people can enjoy a private whirlpool experience, among other features including a Crystal Sauna which is flanked by Cambria’s Golden Dragon stone. The spa also features an Aura Lounge which is designed as a deep relaxation room or mediation space, ideally CONTINUED >

used post-treatment. Guests can even sip crystal-infused water called a Gem Elixir or some Minneapolis-brewed Northstar Kombucha. Much like a yoga class, every service involves welcome and closing rituals, as well as setting intentions for the service so someone can get the most out of their time at Anda Spa. That’s why a lot of their services are actually called rituals, Erickson explained. These services are perfect for anyone wanting to reduce stress, relax or aid in improving their overall health and well-being. “It is more about a journey,” she said. The integration of rose quartz into Anda Spa’s offerings is particularly meaningful, Erickson said, because the stone’s properties are often used to promote love and healing. In this context, a trip to Anda Spa means getting an infusion of self-love and self-care. Even the word Anda means “spirit” in Swedish, so what you get here is something for your whole self, including your deepest essence — or spirit. To design Anda Spa’s space, the owners worked with architect and design firm, ESG, and natural stone provider, Cambria, both Minneapolis based. Additionally, fashion stylist-turned-shamanic

McCann from StyleRituals, who has been featured in Vogue and Goop, performed an energy cleansing ritual in the space, including burying crystals throughout the foundation during Anda Spa’s construction phase. When guests have an experience at Anda Spa, they can expect an expertly-crafted space that was designed for healing and rejuvenation at the deepest level possible.

How does 2020 look to you? Chunky and funky. Delicate and deep. Stop by and discover hand-crafted frames from the most daring designers on the planet.

“It really aligns with who we are, that abundance of love and balancing the mind, body and spirit,” Erickson said. The spa also features a cafe as well as a fitness center, creating a total mind-body-spirit experience. Director of Fitness, Cyrus Lemon, says the fitness center offers many unique features, including personal training and monthly memberships, which come with complimentary valet parking and access to the spa facilities. The center also features brand-new Technogym equipment, Olympic-style platforms, rowers, skiers and indoor exercise bikes, including a Peloton bike. The fitness center also features two studio rooms. One is larger and offers regular yoga classes, Lemon said. Another is smaller and is ideal for smaller groups, individual sessions or for rent. The spa, fitness center and cafe opened in the summer of 2019. “We really just want people to know that we are here and take the time to enhance their well-being,” Lemon said.
