Maune Contemporary is highlighting the work of Justin Lyons in an upcoming exhibition. Creative, colorful, and whimsical Lyons, a contemporary artist from the Florida panhandle, credits his first introduction into the world of street art as ‘the spark’ that led him to pursue his own form of artistic expression. We loved learning about him and his inspiration.

BEAUTY AND CHARM IN A PREMIERE NEIGHBORHOOD ARTICLE SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY ADAM ELLIS

Midtown Lifestyle | March 2020

WHEN ADAM ELLIS GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE IN 2004 WITH A MARKETING DEGREE, HE SET OUT TO FIND A JOB WHERE HE COULD PUT HIS SKILLS TO USE. While searching, his mother, Patti Ellis, encouraged him to get his real estate license. Patti, a realtor since 1976, thought it would be a good way for him to make money until he found a job. “I went to get my license, and about 2/3 of the way through the class, I was like, ‘huh, I kind of like this,’” said Adam. So, with his real estate license in hand, he approached his mother about their working together. She was hesitant at first, but right away she could see he got it. Since then, it’s been Team Ellis all the way. “It’s special working with Adam and I’m grateful for it,” said Patti.

luxurious Carrara marble, a huge walk-in shower, and a soaking tub with a view of the skyline.

Adam described the multiple entertaining spaces as incredible. The great room overlooks the private backyard, which is beautifully landscaped with custom lighting and has a heated pool with a hot tub, and an outdoor fireplace. The front of the home features a large, open porch where owners can relax and wave to their neighbors as they stroll by. Another important and modern feature often requested now is home automation. This home has speakers throughout the inside and outside that can be controlled by smartphone. In addition, the television and pool can also be remotely controlled. Adam explained that buyer’s expectations have changed greatly over the years due to shows like those featured on HGTV. So, they really work with sellers to get their property ready, and can even hire a stager to help make the home look its best. “Kitchen and baths are always the most important spaces in any house. If they are done nicely and updated, that’s a major selling point,” said Patti. When looking for a real estate agent, Adam and Patti agree that finding someone who is going to be responsive is your number one goal. You also need to feel comfortable with your agent and know you can trust him or her. Another important factor is to find someone who knows the areas and the neighborhoods you’re interested in. This way, the person will be knowledgeable about any changes that have recently taken place, and any changes that may be coming up. For the house on Penn, both Patti and Adam live in the neighborhood, so they can answer just about any question a buyer may pose. “We are there to get the transaction done while doing the best for our clients. We talk about that all the time, and we make our clients our family,” said Patti. To find out more about what they can offer, contact Patti at 770-366-4658 and Adam at 770-355-0549, or go to www.atlantafinehomes.com/eng.

BEING IN THE R I G H T P L A C E AT THE RIGHT TIME HOW CHANCE ENCOUNTERS LED TO WIDE SPREAD RECOGNITION OF AN ARTIST’S TALENT

20

Midtown Lifestyle | March 2020

BESIDES TALENT AND HARD WORK, JUSTIN LYONS’ SUCCESS AS AN ARTIST CAN ALSO BE ATTRIBUTED TO SERENDIPITY. His story reads like a late-night movie or a best-selling book. Lyons was in his late 20s when a friend, Jeremy Lynch (now a film maker in California), introduced him to wheatpasting in 2005. Combining paper, paint and drawings, wheatpasting is a type of street art that is affixed to public spaces using a mixture of flour, water and sugar. Painting on discarded wood, Lyons would hang his unsigned works all over Fort Walton Beach, FL, where he was living at the time. When they began disappearing, he assumed the city was taking them down. He persevered though and one night, about eight months later, he was preparing to hang another piece of work when he ran into a restaurant owner in town. After noticing the painting in the back of his truck, she told him she had some of his other pieces hanging in her restaurant and asked if she could have this one as well. In return, she offered him not only a generous meal at the restaurant, but also the opportunity to show his work there. Three months later, with the help of Lynch, he did just that, and sold 15 of his 20 pieces. A few years down the road, he got married and had kids, so making art for a living got put on hold. But, by 2012, he was once again painting heavily and showing his work at art fairs and local art shows. Soon, he was able to open a small studio and gallery in Santa Rosa Beach, FL, where he lives with his wife Kayla and children, Seven, Isla and Lynox. Not too long after that, another chance meeting took place that would expand his reach greatly into the art world. A woman, on her way to dinner, was walking by his gallery when she ducked under the awning to get out of the rain. Liking what she saw through the window, she went inside and CONTINUED >

Instead of covering them up and starting fresh, he likes leaving the changes showing. “When I’m doing up layers, I’m writing things that are spontaneously in my head,” he said. “It’s an immediate thought, but then I might change my mind.”

Sara Deberry was diagnosed in 2013. "I received the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) Bag of Hope when I attended my chemotherapy orientation. Sara exclaimed, "I still use some of the items today," as she recounted her introduction to GOCA. The Bag of Hope is provided, free of charge to Georgia based, newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patients and consists of important information about resources and fellowship as well as numerous comfort items all designed to support the needs of women who are living with and through ovarian cancer. Sara is a participant in the annual GOCA Teal Trot and has a personal fundraising team called Sara's Amigos that is comprised of friends and family who come together in her honor and rasies critical funds every year for GOCA. For 2020, the

Interior Designer Stephanie Andrews says "This color is a tried and true color for us, so it was not a surprise. We use Classic Blue in so many designs. To us, it is like the perfect pair of jeans, adds a bit of color but still works with every color possible." delivery

Most food subscription boxes will allow you to choose a delivery day and time frame that works best for you. Your grocery items will be packaged as intuitively as possible, with any refrigerator items tucked in with ice packs. Bonus: You can reuse the insulation and ice packs in kids’ lunch boxes, on road trips or in your own lunches at work.

ingredients + Prep

Depending on what you order, you may need some of your own supplies. When you select your meals, think about what you will need to cook the food in and if any other kitchen utensils would be helpful. Have them ready to go so you don’t have to make any last-minute trips to the store, defeating the purpose of getting your box delivered! If the meals are foods you would enjoy reheated, you could do all of your cooking the day you get the box to meal prep for your week, or you can just store the ingredients to the other meals in your fridge and cook them throughout the week.

cooking

If you’re a little less-experienced in the kitchen, meal kits are great for learning! Read the instructions carefully before you get started so you don’t feel frazzled while the heat is up high, and take your time. If you are a more seasoned chef, feel free to take your own spin on the recipes and add some extra flavor or swap out ingredients to make it perfect for your palate.

let’s eat!

This is the really fun part! It’s time to start taste-testing. Make a note tab in your phone for tracking what you love and what isn’t your favorite. That way, when it’s time to select more meals, you know what you have tried and what you absolutely have to try again. Don’t forget to ask your family what was a hit and a miss. Who knows— maybe the kids love some of the Purple Carrot recipes and don’t even notice how many veggies they are eating!
