Party Fowl Serves Up Nashville Hot Chicken
CREATING A CONCEPT THAT SURPASSES A CHICKEN SHACK, ELEVATING THE BELOVED NASHVILLE DISH WITH A SPIN ON CLASSICS. ARTICLE JENNIFER KAUFMAN
18
Brentwood Lifestyle | October 2020
BACK IN THE EARLY PART OF THE 2000s AUSTIN SMITH STARTED A SOFTBALL TEAM CALLED PARTY FOWL AT LIPSCOMB UNIVERSITY WHERE HE ATTENDED SCHOOL. In 2006 Austin went to work at The Grape (now called 360 Bistro) which was and is still owned by Nick Johnson. Austin and Nick became good friends. Nick joined the softball team and for years they joked about one day opening a restaurant called “Party Fowl.” Fast forward to 2013, Nick and Austin were at Chili’s having dinner with their families when Austin said “I’m opening Party Fowl! A HOT Chicken restaurant with ALL the things. TVs, chicken dishes, beer! We will be the Hot Chicken destination!” Nick and Austin became partners from that day forward. Their first Party Fowl Restaurant was in Nashville, on 8th Avenue near the Gulch. It was an old depleted restaurant that needed a major overhaul. Austin’s first call was to Tiffany Thompson. She was the manager at Losers Bar & Grill at the time and Austin knew her incredible knowledge of the business and her work ethic from his years of working in the distributing industry. He offered her a job. She saw Austin’s vision and was excited to be a part of building this restaurant to its full potential. When it came time to hire a chef Austin put an ad on Craigslist that read like a Love Letter. The gist of the ad was “Must Love Chicken.” For 8 days Austin received a resume at least twice a day from a chef named Bart Pickens. Little did Austin know, Chef Bart wasn’t receiving the notification that a “file had been sent” which is why he continued to send it over and over. Austin figured he was a persistent guy so he invited him in to interview. Chef Bart Pickens went to culinary school in New Orleans. He was interested in food and cooking for as long as he could remember. During his meeting with Nick and Austin they asked “Can you cook Hot Chicken?” Bart replied in Bubba fashion from the Forest Gump movie by replying with “I can cook hot chicken, spicy chicken, roasted chicken, butter chicken, blackened chicken, fried chicken, buttermilk chicken…..” You get the point. And cook Bart did. Bart has the innovation paired with experience and finesse to produce fresh, refined, classic flavor combinations with added twists. When asked about his famous Cuban sandwich he replied “You have to know the original song before you can change the lyrics.”

ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)
When I asked Chef Bart if there is one particular food in the world he considers his favorite, his response summed up just how passionate he is about the history and authenticity of food and culture and the importance of recognizing the importance in food: “You cannot disrespect the food or it’s not going to play right. The guests know if you respect the food. If you have pride and passion it is felt throughout the dining room.” That is why their kitchen is a “scratch kitchen.” “We don’t take short cuts,” says Tiffany, director of operations. “There’s a reason for everything and a method to our procedures. We make sure the food is prepped, treated, respected and therefore the outcome is Bart’s art.” Specializing in Hot Chicken and cold drinks, Party Fowl offers diners a one-of-a-kind experience at all four of their locations The menu includes a number of hot chicken dishes with heat levels ranging from mild to “Poultrygeist,” as well as creative spins on the classics. Party Fowl offers more than 20 local beers on draft and is home to a craft cocktail program created by consulting beverage directors Freddy Schwenk and Matt Buttel of Nashville Ice Lab. They also have a variety of Boozy Slushy’s in a variety of flavors such as cherry limeade and Formosa. With wall-to-wall large-screen TVs, and a brunch that is so unique, you’ll be excited to try it. Party Fowl also includes an extensive catering menu with a number of different options for whatever event you have planned. Whether you are looking to pick up a small order, have a large spread delivered, or you need a fully-staffed event, they’ll work with you to help make sure your next gathering is a hit and make people wanting more. Located in Cool Springs by the Galleria Mall, Party Fowl is a party you don’t want to miss.

FITNESS MINDFULNESS AND NUTRITION WHAT SETS THEM APART ARTICLE JENNIFER KAUFMAN
1/ MINDFULNESS - How does Barre3 include Mindfulness in your practice? + Meditation, self-care, mindfulness—so much of what’s trending in the wellness world right now is centered around being present and reflective. + A few years ago, Barre3 dedicated the last 5 to 10 minutes of every class to mindfulness. We take time to stretch, breathe and reset our minds and bodies. + Connection is a big part of mindfulness at Barre3. We talk a lot about the mind-body connection throughout class. + Physically, that could be dropping a little lower in Power Leg. Or using a heavier set of weights to connect with the muscles we are targeting in our upper body throughout combo work. It could also mean closing your eyes to dial into the sensations you’re creating in your body or exploring a modification you’ve never taken. + Mentally, that could be telling yourself you are strong, thus allowing you to lean into that deep muscle burn, versus giving up. Or, it could mean surrendering to the moment, listening to your body, and taking that much-needed break. + We incorporate connection throughout our practice so that our clients can take what they learn in class and apply it to their everyday life. At the end of a long day, it’s tempting to sink into the couch with Netflix or Instagram— but taking time to talk with your partner, roommate, or kids, without any distractions, can instantly make you feel more engaged with your life. 30
Brentwood Lifestyle | October 2020
2/ NUTRITION - Why is nutrition so important? How do you incorporate nutrition into Barre3? + Here’s the secret: it’s all about balance! + Barre3 is rooted in balance. We accept imbalance as a way to ultimately become more balanced throughout our everyday lives. We find this throughout our postures in class, but it applies to nutrition, too. Nourishment and hydration are a big piece of the puzzle. If you’re not nourishing your body with healthy, whole foods, it doesn’t matter how much you work out – you’re most likely not going to see the benefits and experience total body health. + Total body wellness is a combination of proper nourishment, hydration, exercise, sleep and mindful connection. It’s all about balance – you don’t have to be perfect in all of these areas, but being mindful about the way you eat, move, rest and connect is going to keep you feeling energized, motivated and confident. + When it comes to nutrition, satisfy your cravings with foods that nourish you rather than deplete you. + Barre3 members have access to our b3 magazine, which dedicates an entire section to nourishment. Our members can find healthy and delicious recipes, and articles from doctors and nutritionists here.
3/ FITNESS - What level of fitness do you need to be to do Barre3? What do classes at Barre3 benefit the most for your body? + Barre3 is a full-body balanced workout combining strength conditioning, cardio, and mindfulness. Located in the heart of Brentwood in the Merchants Walk Shopping Center, barre3 Brentwood’s classes are designed to help you increase strength, reduce stress, improve balance, and build a mind-body connection. Our talented instructors empower you to make each class your own by offering modification options for every move—allowing people of every fitness level to create sustainable change from the inside out. Letting In The Light OLD WORLD CHARM MEETS MODERN STYLE IN RESTAURANT MAKEOVER
ARTICLE SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY ALI MILLER
MERE BULLES, LOCATED IN BRENTWOOD AND SERVING HIGH-END AMERICAN FOOD, HAS A WHOLE DIFFERENT LOOK THESE DAYS. Open since 2001, it has gone through an extensive makeover. “We wanted to brighten up the restaurant,” says owner Steven Smithing. To help do this, he hired Connie Long, of Connie Long Interiors. Because he worked with her previously on four other restaurants, as well as his own home, he knew she was the right person for the job. “We have a pretty good relationship,” says Steven. “I can tell her if I don’t like something she’s showing me, and she certainly has a good way of telling me that I can’t afford some things I like.” The restaurant is located in a house that was built to resemble a manor house, and was at one time a horse farm. Connie could tell right away that Steven wanted to play on the fact that it was a historical home. “Steve likes to put together a board of ideas that he has seen on his travels and from looking at other restaurants, and he has a really good aesthetic about style,” she says. While preserving its wonderful moldings, grand staircase and artwork, Connie focused on bringing it up-to-date. “I just put in the aesthetic of a contemporary kind of look,” she says. “We did all the accessories, the lighting, the artwork, the chairs, and now everything has more of a clean and modern mid-century sort of look.” The changes made, says Steven, were dramatic. “This is a beautiful home and we have wonderful service and wonderful food, and we wanted to appeal to some of the younger people in Brentwood,” he says.

The walls, says Connie, used to be dark brown and now have a very light cream background with a sponge application in a grayish tan color on top. “In the grand dining room, there’s a large oil painting that has a Monet look to it with an elaborate gold frame around the border. That’s kind of like the hallmark of the restaurant so that needed to stay. We did a panel around that painting and picked up the gold,” she says. Connie also had a large photograph showing the original barn framed. It’s the main focal point of the patio room, and when one looks at that picture and then turns around and looks out of the windows, an almost identical scene is seen. Guests can eat indoors in one of the beautiful dining rooms, or sit outdoors on the large downstairs patio or on the balcony upstairs. Unified UniQorn Couple THE EAST FAMILY SHARE BITS ABOUT THEIR COFFEE BRAND, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, FAMILY AND LIFE'S STRUGGLES SHAWN JOHNSON EAST IS A FORMER OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST, SHE’S A NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR. She’s an entrepreneur operating numerous businesses. She’s a philanthropist involved in a number of philanthropic activities working with animal and children’s charities, cancer charities, and advocates of health and wellness initiatives. She’s also a wife and a mother of a beautiful little girl named Drew. Andrew East is an American football long snapper who’s currently a free agent. He played college football at Vanderbilt, and has also had multiple stints with various NFL teams. He’s an engineer, an investor and a entrepreneur creating a brand as The East Family. From the moment Shawn and Andrew walked in the door for a Brentwood Lifestyle photo shoot, we knew it was going to be a lovely day. Their smiles lit up the room as they greeted the crew. After rounds of greetings, and two adorable and boisterous dogs jumping all over them, to which they happily gave their time and affection, it was time for work. Work is a loose term when you’re with Shawn and Andrew. Both are so accomplished at their trade and work so hard in their everyday lives, coming to a photo shoot is a time to relax, let loose and have fun. Very engaging and they clearly have a wonderful relationship, watching them giggle, swoon and banter was “relationship goals” to the rest of us. They even did an odds gamble about jumping in the pool to which Shawn lost. Andrew knew his wife couldn’t jump in the pool, hair and makeup done, and the shoot was just the start of their day, which included a press conference, so he took one for the team. Andrew jumped in fully clothed to the astonished Shawn and made us all laugh. Shawn has not only been open about her accomplishments in her life but she also speaks about her struggles. After experiencing a miscarriage in 2017, Shawn says she battled with postpartum depression. She’s recently spoken out to the press about her eating disorder and negative body image as an Olympic athlete and as an adult. 44

Most recently, Shawn and Andrew started their our own coffee company. They gathered up everything they learned about coffee over the years and designed their brand–UniQorn coffee. It’s a pure form of coffee sourced from some of the world’s highest quality farms, sun-dried and roasted to perfection. We got the opportunity to ask Shawn and Andrew some fun questions about their life and their coffee. SHAWN, YOU’VE DONE IT ALL: OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST, DANCING WITH THE STARS, YOUTUBE CHANNEL, INFLUENCER, WRITTEN BOOKS, NUMEROUS ENDORSEMENTS, TV APPEARANCES, CHARITY WORK, BUSINESS WOMAN, BEING A WIFE AND NOW A MOM—AND SO MUCH MORE! WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND TO BE THE MOST CHALLENGING? THE MOST REWARDING? Being a mom, being a wife, and being able to be part of a business that allows me to stay home and be both of those. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW COFFEE LINE, UNIQORN COFFEE. Andrew: UniQorn is one of our favorite projects yet. We partnered with our friends Drs. Josh and Chelsea Axe, who we actually first met at a coffee shop. They’re health food geeks. We created it because we wanted to give people all the tools needed to create memorable moments in their lives. Because for us, coffee’s a big part of that. Shawn: Going through the process of finding the highest quality coffee that’s also responsibly sourced and that we just love the taste of was also a really fun challenge. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME? Shawn: The brand is all about having special moments with special people in your life. Those magical moments and those meaningful relationships are rare, which made us think of unicorns. And so UniQorn Coffee came to be! WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL? FAVORITE BLEND? Shawn: Santa Monica Mornings for me. It makes an amazing oat milk cappuccino, and it reminds me of the special time we spent in LA! Andrew: I always thought I preferred dark roast coffee, but I’ve really been loving our Santa Monica Mornings light roast, too. The beans are from Honduras. I’m a big fan of using that with a Chemex. TELL EVERYONE HOW YOU TWO MET. Andrew: We first met through my brother, Guy, who was an Olympic-level athlete. He met Shawn at the London Olympics and thought that we might be a good fit. He was right, and here we are! WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING NEW PARENTS? Shawn: It is, without a doubt, the greatest job in the entire world. Being able to see a tiny human grow up in front of your eyes is just so special. And being home with her every day is pretty cool, too. Andrew: So far, my experience is that it’s an incredibly humbling challenge. But it’s by far the most fun, most rewarding experience we’ve ever had.

IT’S WAY EARLY TO ASK, BUT DO YOU SEE YOURSELF PUSHING DREW TO BECOME A GYMNAST? Shawn: Absolutely not. I will encourage her to be whatever she wants to be and to try all sports and hobbies and activities, and I’ll be her biggest cheerleader in whatever that is. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT LIVING IN NASHVILLE? IS THIS WHERE YOU WOULD LIKE TO RAISE DREW? PLANS FOR MORE KIDS? Shawn: Nashville is the perfect home for us. We’ve been here 10 years, and it’s the perfect mix of a big city that still feels small. Everyone is so friendly, and the possibilities here are endless—you feel encouraged to do anything and everything here. So yes, we want to raise Drew here, and future siblings, as well! ANDREW, YOU WERE A LONG SNAPPER AT VANDERBILT. PRIOR TO COVID-19, DID YOU FIND YOURSELF A FAN OF THE TEAM? GOING TO GAMES? IS THAT WHY YOU CAME BACK TO NASHVILLE? I actually hadn’t heard of Vandy before I started my recruiting process, which was my junior year of high school. I loved every second I was there. I haven’t been able to go to many games, unfortunately, but I’m looking forward to more! I’ll be a lifelong fan, for sure. ANDREW, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SHAWN? WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE? My favorite thing about Shawn is her giggle. And I do whatever I can to hear it as often as I can. Biggest pet peeve is that she won’t let me sleep on my back, because she claims I snore... SHAWN, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT ANDREW? WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE? My favorite thing is he’s so unapologetically himself. He doesn’t care what anybody says! He’s going to be him, and he’ll encourage you to be you—which I love, especially as it applies to raising our daughter. And my favorite thing is also kind of my pet peeve, because he’s just a big kid at heart. It’s like having two kids in the house! YOU BOTH SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF FUN TOGETHER. HOW DO YOU BALANCE IT ALL? WORKING TOGETHER? DOING EVERYTHING TOGETHER? Shawn: If only you could see us on a daily basis! Haha. No, but we’re really good at not keeping any emotion in. We have to operate that way. It’s not like we spend our days apart and only see each other for the good parts, the highlights. We deal with our issues as they come. Definitely a ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality, I think! Andrew: We pretty much spend every waking second together, which has its own unique challenges, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I think we both do a good job of approaching things as learning experiences as opposed to trying to direct or manage things ourselves, which makes it easier. 48

WHITE LIMOZEEN, IN THE GRADUATE HOTEL OF NASHVILLE, HAS BEEN OPEN SINCE JULY OF 2020. Since its opening it has received an Instagram following of more than 24,000 followers. It was designed to look almost “Barbie Dreamhouse-esque” with a colorful outdoor patio complete with daybeds and a wading pool named “the Governor’s Pool.” Striped pink walls, colorful daybeds, hot pink umbrellas and greenery throughout the outdoor space make this every girls’ dream mixed with Hollywood glam and offers views of Midtown. White Limozeen will exhilarate guests from the moment they walk in to the over-the-top, indoor-outdoor rooftop destination that celebrates the uniquely Nashville identity of following your dreams. Named in honor of country music icon Dolly Parton, the concept offers a fresh take on the finer things in life, with a menu that contrasts high-brow technique and luxury with comfortable and familiar tastes driven by local farmers. “We’re thrilled to open our doors at White Limozeen and welcome locals and travelers alike to experience this overthe-top, elegant, yet inviting rooftop destination. Inspired by Music City greats who moved to Nashville to chase their dreams, White Limozeen is a celebration of the nonconformists that have always done it their own way. It’s unique, beyond special, and tells the narrative of a relentless, rags-to-riches journey. Whether you are playing for tips on a stool on 16th Avenue, selling out Nissan Stadium, or just stopping by for a cocktail, this will be an unforgettable experience for everyone,” says Ben Weprin, Graduate Hotels CEO and founder.
WHITE LIMOZEEN WILL IMPRESS WITH ITS DOLLY INSPIRED DECOR
To satisfy your palette, the menu was developed by Rose, Abrous, and Chef de Cuisine Chris Lewallen. It features party foods the depicts traditional French presentations including Trout Fritters with Almondine Dip, Chicken Liver Pie with Pumpernickel Crust, Biscuits and Caviar, Mussels steamed in Nashville Hot Butter, Smoked Chicken with Sauce Diane, and a White Bread Burger.

THE CHANGING FACES OF HUNGER
Brentwood Lifestyle | October 2020
SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE HAS SEEN A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN FOOD INSECURITY DURING THIS PANDEMIC. This crisis is occurring in every neighborhood and affecting people who have never needed assistance before. “Prior to COVID, we had about 350,000 people in our service area that were food insecure, meaning that they didn’t have access to enough nutritious food,” says President and CEO Nancy Keil. “Over the past six months, we’ve seen anywhere from a 45 to 50 percent increase in the need for food assistance.” She says that due to the pandemic, 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 4 children are struggling with hunger. Those statistics are staggering. This past fiscal year, Second Harvest has provided 36.5 million meals. “It shifted overnight and with this pandemic it’s not going to be something that’s going to right itself quickly,” says Nancy. Second Harvest, in operation since 1978, serves 46 counties in middle and west Tennessee and works with 460 partner agencies such as soup kitchens, senior care facilities, churches, food pantries and schools. Basically, any non-profit or houses of worship that have a food component gets food from them. “We’ve been working with all of our partners to give out food boxes filled with fresh produce, shelf stable food, milk, and frozen meats; just really good nutritious foods for our families,” she says. “The pandemic, on top of the tornado, has been like the perfect storm for all of our communities.”

RENOVATE & REFINE
HAPPY KITCHEN, H A P P Y H O M EÂ 62
Brentwood Lifestyle | October 2020
WHILE THE YEAR 2020 HAS BEEN FULL OF UNCERTAINTIES, ONE THING FOR CERTAIN IS THAT PEOPLE ARE SPENDING MORE TIME AT HOME. For some, more time working; for others, more time learning. And for those preparing meals, more time cooking. Which brings us to the topic of kitchen pantries. And no one knows more about organized pantries than Mindy Bledsoe, owner and executive design consultant at Tailored Living of Nashville. “Kitchen pantries have become one of the most popular renovation spaces this year,” says Mindy. “People eat out less and are focusing more on preparing meals at home. The pandemic has made folks look at their homes, and how they are – or aren’t – organized. It’s much easier to make a grocery list and plan meals from an organized pantry. Conversely, a lack of organization can cause stress for a lot of people.” During a free in-home consultation, Mindy or one of her professional design team members will measure the existing pantry space and discuss ideas with the homeowner. This is a collaborative process to ensure the result is a functional and beautiful space the family will enjoy for years to come. Mindy notes, “Adjustable shelving is a must to maximize the use of existing space, and can make a huge difference

in even a small pantry. No one needs to settle for the wire shelving many builders use as a default.” Additions including spice racks, can racks, baskets and drawers can all be added to maximize organization. In larger pantry spaces, a possible drop zone for grocery bags, areas for food prep, a wine rack and vertical shelf dividers can also be incorporated. CONTINUED >

RENOVATE & REFINE (CONTINUED)
The shelving material most often chosen is a white or light grey melamine, which is extremely durable with numerous finishes. While “light and bright” is most common, folks can also incorporate decorative drawers, crown molding and wood if desired. With more than 16 years of home organization under her belt, Mindy is humble when asked how she came to own and manage her own business. “I designed commercial office space for many years and decided it was time to make a change. I happened upon an opportunity with California Closets where I ultimately had a successful career for 13 years. My husband Tim and I had always wanted to own our own business and felt the time was right, so we decided to start Tailored Living in 2017.” “I am passionate about home organization design and love working with our customers; it is truly a joy for me!” mbledsoe@tailoredliving.com 615.590.8775 TailoredLiving.com

LEAVE DRIVING, CROWDS TO THEM LOCAL DELIVERY TEAM STEPS UP WITH PERSONAL SERVICE AND EXTRA COMMUNICATION
"OUR TEAM AT NASHVILLE DELIVERS OPERATES LIKE A FAMILY. OUR DISPATCHERS AND DRIVERS GIVE EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND WE SO APPRECIATE THEM." AS A BRENTWOOD-BASED CONCIERGE COMPANY GUIDED BY SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY, NASHVILLE DELIVERS OFFERS DEPENDABLE DELIVERY SERVICES FOR RESTAURANT TAKEOUT, BEER, WINE, LIQUOR AND CATERING. More than 300 restaurants and nine liquor stores can be accessed through this premiere delivery company. Participating food and beverage providers can be sorted by six factors: fastest, cuisine, fee, name, distance and minimum. “Since the pandemic, our business quadrupled,” says Nashville Delivers co-owner Shawn Stewart, who helped launch this company in 2016. “What separates us from other delivery companies is the personal communication and the extra steps in service that our customers get. They receive calls or text messages from our live dispatchers to confirm orders before they’re placed with the restaurant or liquor store. Anyone who calls our 888 number during our operating hours can get a hold of us right away, not 24 hours later,” he says. The company’s deliveries are handled in three steps: 1) Enter zip code, address and desired delivery time. 2) Pick a participating restaurant on the online list and order items. 3) Check out, and food should arrive within 45 to 60 minutes. Shawn says the only elements out of their control that affect deliveries are traffic, bad weather and ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON
kitchen backups. However he says during those circumstances, one of the Nashville Delivers live dispatchers will call customers to let them know what’s occurring and the newly anticipated delivery time.

Whereas cannabis-related brownie recipes were once the sole domain of stoners, the rise in popularity of cannabidoil for all its health benefits has led to CBD-infused edibles being popular with everybody from athletes and CEOs to parents and the elderly. CBD tincture in brownies provides a great option to take CBD, especially for people who dislike the taste of natural, unflavored CBD oil.
