putting the strong in your pour WHY WHEY PROTEIN POWDER IS SUPERIOR TO SOY PROTEIN POWDER FOR WEIGHT LOSS AND WEIGHT MAINTENANCE

ARE YOU TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT OR SIMPLY TRYING TO EAT HEALTHIER TO MAINTAIN YOUR WEIGHT? Today’s busy lifestyle often demands convenient on-the-go options, especially when people are increasing the amount of protein they are taking in as part of their diet. Protein shakes can be a great option to optimize one’s intake of protein, but buyer beware, not all protein shakes are created equal and can even sabotage health and weight loss goals. First, why is it important to take in more protein for weight loss and maintenance? Protein lowers levels of ghrelin, a hunger hormone that can make you hungrier and drive cravings. Protein boosts appetite-reducing hormones and promotes greater satiety as it takes longer to digest than carbohydrates. Studies have shown that increasing the amount of protein in the diet will lead to reduced body fat, resulting in weight loss, and will increase lean muscle mass without the restriction of calories or other macronutrients. The more lean muscle mass an individual has, the more body fat and calories can be burned as muscle is your metabolism. High-quality proteins that are complete in branch chain amino acids are necessary to build lean, strong muscle. These proteins can be from whole food sources like meat, dairy, other animal products, and whey protein powder, as well as plant sources, like soy, in their whole or powder form. While it’s best to consume protein in its whole food form, that’s not always possible due to busy schedules. Sometimes we need a quick and portable way to replace a meal or supplement our overall protein requirement, and many look to protein shakes to fill this need. The consumer market is full of pre-mixed shakes and protein powders, and shake shops are popping up on every street corner. Pre-mixed shakes are the most convenient as no shaker bottle or mixer is required. However, these pre-mixed shakes can also contain artificial chemicals, sweeteners, or added sugars that diminish 12

Fargo Lifestyle | April 2020

the “health” factor we think we are gaining from them. This rings true for some protein powders as well. It is essential to evaluate the nutrition facts label, not only for its calorie, carbohydrate, added sugar, and protein information but for its ingredients as well. Shake shops are just as convenient as fast-food restaurants, but most use inferior quality protein powders and load their shakes with sugar-sweetened fruit, artificially sweetened drink mixes, and pudding powders. Like label reading, it is vital to ask the shake shop about its ingredients. If they can’t or won’t tell you specifically what they are putting in your shake, consider spending your money elsewhere because the quality of that shake may be no better than eating at a fast-food establishment. The most significant consideration we need to make when choosing a quality protein shake is the kind of protein in it. Most commonly, pre-mixed shakes or protein powders are made from either whey or soy protein, and most shake shops in Fargo and West Fargo use soy protein. Both types of proteins have been widely researched for their benefits to health and effects on weight. Whey protein is the victor over soy protein in these studies time and time again. Whey protein is derived from milk or formed as a by-product of cheese making. Whey protein is a complete protein as it contains all nine essential amino acids needed to build or maintain lean muscle mass. Even though whey is derived from milk, it is low in lactose, a sugar found in milk, especially if it is whey protein isolate. Whey protein isolate is further processed from its concentrated form, which removes more of the fat and lactose and is usually 90 percent protein. This makes whey protein tolerable for people who suffer from lactose intolerance. Whey protein isolate is more rapidly absorbed in the body, which leads to feeling full quicker so people will be less likely to overeat. It also contains more of the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) leucine, isoleucine, and valine, which promote muscle protein synthesis for muscle growth, enhances exercise performance and regulates blood sugar levels. All these factors are crucial for burning fat, which leads to weight loss or weight maintenance. Soy protein isolate powder is made from defatted soybean flakes that have been washed to remove the sugars and dietary fiber. They’re then dehydrated and turned into a powder. Soy protein is a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids, like whey protein. However, soy has less BCAAs, especially leucine, which is the key ingredient for muscle building and fat burning. found no significant positive impact. In contrast, studies evaluating whey protein isolate have shown proven results for improved body composition. There is also some concern that soy intake may affect a person’s thyroid function and disrupt natural hormone levels, estrogen and testosterone, in the body. So if you are in the market for a high-quality protein powder or shake, choose a whey protein-based shake or powder with less than 10 grams net carbohydrate and 20g or more protein. If you are looking for the best quality shake shop in Fargo and West Fargo, stop in and try a shake at Strong Pour Nutrition Bar located in West Fargo. Strong Pour uses 100% grass-fed whey protein with no added sugars or hormones and is non-GMO. Each shake has 24g protein or more and is less than 10g net carb. Only real food ingredients are used to build the shakes versus artificial drink mixes and pudding powders. You deserve the best in health and wellness; why not search out the best in our area! TREND SETTER

delaying the aging process ADVANCEMENTS IN SKIN REJUVENATION TECHNOLOGY OFFER TOOLS FOR AGING PREVENTION

AGING IS INEVITABLE. As much as we try, the effects of aging take their toll on our bodies, both internally and externally. Our skin wrinkles, sags and discolors. We have less energy and strength, can lose focus and memory, and succumb to illness more often. But why do some people seem to experience the effects of aging more than others? The answer is extrinsic aging. Extrinsic aging is defined as “a distinctive declination process caused by external factors, which include ultra-violet

radiation,

cigarette

smoking,

air pollution, among others. Of all extrinsic causes, radiation from sunlight has the most widespread documentation of its negative effects on the skin.” In contrast, intrinsic aging is caused by the simple act of living and hereditary predisposition.

ARTICLE MELISSA ROGNE 24

Fargo Lifestyle | April 2020

What does this mean for you? It means that you have a large degree of control over how you age. While aging is still inevitable, you have the choice as to how it will affect your appearance. Not only can we take active measures to prevent extrinsic aging, but we can reverse the effects of extrinsic aging with advances in skin rejuvenation technology. Let’s dig a bit deeper and start with aging prevention. First, it is never too late to begin preventative measures. Not only do they protect your skin from aesthetic changes, but they also protect your skin from disease (read: skin cancer). There is a simple two-step process you can implement every morning to significantly lower your risk in both areas: application of an antioxidant serum followed by a physical zinc and titanium-based environmental protection product. Antioxidants work by protecting our body from free radicals, which are unstable molecules created from the environment. These free radicals attack our healthy skin cells, causing them to break down. The result is sagging, wrinkles, enlarged pores and rough texture. Antioxidants like Vitamin C and Vitamin E “scavenge” these unstable free radicals and destroy them before they can attack our skin. Unfortunately, only specific forms of these vitamins can penetrate the skin and provide an antioxidant effect. Opening up a Vitamin E capsule and applying it to your skin may give some moisturization–but that’s about it. Medical grade antioxidant products are specially formulated to penetrate the skin while maintaining and sustaining antioxidant abilities. The second step to your morning routine is the application of your physical environmental protection product. Note that I do not refer to these as sunscreens. They do so much more than prevent sunburn; they protect your skin from aging and disease and absolutely need to be applied every morning, 365 days per year, rain or shine. Again, not all products are created equal in this arena. Look for micronized zinc and titanium products that are sheer upon application yet provide the broad-spectrum physical barrier of protection.

TREND SE T TER (CONTINUED)

Having worked in the aesthetics industry for over 20 years, I can tell you that there has never been a better time to reverse the signs of skin aging. The skin rejuvenation treatments offered today are both extremely effective and affordable. Treatments like Broadband Light Therapy (BBL) have been studied for almost 20 years and are proven to reverse aging at the cellular level. Other options like SkinPen and Halo are designed to increase the skin’s depleted collagen supply, resulting in a smoother, firmer appearance. Fortunately, navigating the world of aesthetic care has never been easier with advanced imaging technology. Using a special skin scanning device called “Visia,” we can obtain an exact measurement of extrinsic aging. It will even tell us what your exact “skin age” is! This scan allows practitioners to create customized plans to reverse the aging process and, most importantly, measure the results of your investment. Armed with this information, you can determine what level of visible aging is acceptable to you. Not only can you delay aging, but you are also able to reduce your risks of skin disease by incorporating small habits into your daily routine. While “aging gracefully” is still an option, we are now able to age more gradually than ever before by investing in our skin.

UNDERSTAND WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD FOR MINDFUL EATING

ARTICLE HAYLEY HYER

T H I N K O U T S I D E T H E S C A L E . T R Y TA K I N G N O T E OF HOW YOUR FOOD MAKES YOU FEEL AFTER Y O U E AT I T. I T ’ S E A S I E R T O M A K E H E A LT H Y CHOICES WHEN YOU CAN FEEL THE DIFFERENCE!

nutrition MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain. For better concentration and memory, try to incorporate foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil.
