Legislation that would update the current county code has been drafted and is being considered by The County Council. The Howard County Office of Transportation will manage the project which will allow scooters to operate in public areas like pathways, streets, sidewalks and bike lanes. Considerations include safety, location, speed limitations, parking and other factors.

DAVID KOONCE WANTS TO FIND JOY MORE THAN MONEY. As a business model for a mortgage lender, it’s unconventional, but it’s proven to give him the balance he wants in his life and the client satisfaction that breeds referrals and relationship. “My business is not focused on growth. It’s built on maintaining a client level that allows me to achieve what I want in my business, focus on family, and maximize joy,” Koonce explains. “I want to find joy more than money. I need to pay the bills, and I find joy in my job, but I want to spend my time where it’s most important.” But it wasn’t always this way. When Koonce graduated from college, he began searching for what he’d do for the rest of his life. Raised in a small town in South Dakota, he found himself in the finance industry in Pennsylvania, where he helped clients finance all sorts of things, from cars to appliances. The career was shortlived, but he says that when you’re aggressive and young and trying to help as many people as you can, you get recognized. “At one point, I was managing a large territory for a large bank. It involved lots of traveling. I managed a huge staff and had many locations throughout my territories. It was enjoyable and profitable – and then the market changed,” Koonce said. For someone in financing, the onset of the recession could have been a terrifying period of instability and loss. Koonce decided it was time to refocus. He met his wife Nicole in 2007 and knew that he wanted to prioritize marriage and family over financial gain.

If you have a babysitter who likes to cook, you could set out the instructions and ingredients for them to have something fun to do with your kids—it beats ordering pizza again!
ingredients + Prep
Depending on what you order, you may need some of your own supplies. When you select your meals, think about what you will need to cook the food in and if any other kitchen utensils would be helpful. Have them ready to go so you don’t have to make any last-minute trips to the store, defeating the purpose of getting your box delivered! Look over the prep times and cook times to ensure you won’t be rushed, and have fun! If the meals are foods you would enjoy reheated, you could do all of your cooking the day you get the box to meal prep for your week, or you can just store the ingredients to the other meals in your fridge and cook them throughout the week.

If you’re a little less-experienced in the kitchen, meal kits are great for learning! Read the instructions carefully before you get started so you don’t feel frazzled while the heat is up high, and take your time. Gobble is great for beginners because all of the meals are prepped for you and can be cooked in 15 minutes with just one skillet. If you want to learn how to do more plant-based cooking for your health and the environment, Purple Carrot makes it easy to enjoy delicious meals and not even miss the meat. If you are a more seasoned chef, feel free to take your own spin on the recipes and add some extra flavor or swap out ingredients to make it perfect for your palate. If you know what you want to make and have your own recipes already,

This is the really fun part! It’s time to start taste-testing. Make a note tab in your phone for tracking what you love and what isn’t your favorite. That way, when it’s time to select more meals, you know what you have tried and what you absolutely have to try again. Don’t forget to ask your family what was a hit and a miss. EVERY YEAR MY FAMILY AND I TRAVEL TO DES MOINES, IOWA FOR THE HOLIDAYS. My mother, Connie Brewton, who is an art teacher by trade, gifted with a flair for interior design, always has her house just-so. Unfortunately this apple (me) fell far away from that tree. However, every time we visit I find something new in her house that weren’t there the year the before. My mother has the unique ability to see a space and know exactly how to fill it. I have plenty of gifts, but that talent skipped me! This past Christmas, we again returned to visit my mother’s home and low and behold, there were changes everywhere.

whatever your heart desires, within reason. This made my husband happy as well. He loved getting up in the morning to catch up on a few work items before the house became an activity center for our children, as well as nieces and nephews. This is the perfect way to keep this small space functional without having to bring additional pieces of furniture. The new TV room is cozy enough to relax in but beautiful enough to entertain in; the best of both worlds. When I asked my mother for advice on how to afford the pieces that I really want, she told me to be willing to shop around. Going to the web is great way to compare prices. There are often discounts for using the website that you can’t get in the store. You can also find great coupons that require you to come into the store. Just do your research and be willing to invest the time. “Patience is the key,” she said , “You’re only happy if you get exactly what you want. I wait for the pieces that I find. Everything eventually goes on sale.” She went on to explain that having patience may mean that the room you are working on is not quite perfect yet. Allow your new idea to live amongst your old pieces, until you can replace them. The moral of the story is that even in small spaces; with patience you can make big changes. I’m excited to see what change awaits our family next Christmas vacation!

WE’VE ALL HEARD OF THE ADAGE ‘DON’T PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET’. Well, one of the ways to follow this golden rule is to look to alternate asset sources to diversify our financial portfolio. Yes, stocks, bonds, annuities and cash reserves are good to own, but another asset to consider is investment property. To help give you a little ‘food for thought’, here are our top five advantages and disadvantages to owning investment property. 28

TIP 1: ORGANIZE BY COLOR Simplify your morning and create a visu-

ally pleasing experience in your closet by color-coordinating your clothes. Easily recreate this eye catching closet in just a few steps. Step 1: Empty and clean your closet. Step 2: Sort and purge unwanted clothes. Step 3: Rehang by Color. Arrange your clothes in order from light to dark, keeping in mind how you wear clothes. If you find yourself wearing blue more often than not, then consider moving this color group closer to the front of the line to make it easy to grab and go. TIP 2: GO MONOCHROMATIC WITH STORAGE I suggest you go monochromatic (choose a single color) for all of your storage baskets. Monotone backgrounds allow all the things you are looking for to stand out against the uniform color palette - making it easier for you to find what you seek and saving you time in the process. TIP 3: VISUALIZE YOUR NEW STORAGE SOLUTION If you are thinking about a brand new storage solution or closet then definitely check out the free resources that abound online. Two of my favorites are the Rubbermaid Storage Planner (shelving.rubbermaid.com) and The Container Store Design Center (containerstore.com/design- center). Both tools allow you to customize a solution that works for you.
