The new, freestanding Coachcella tub redefines bathing as an ethereal experience. Inspired by California’s prolific mid-century modern design found in the desert, its fluid form unfolds like butterfly wings on both sides for optimal comfort. Integrated lumbar support cradles the body, while a seamless integral pedestal elevates the bath to new heights.

For The Love Of Huntsville

Growing up I could not wait to get out of Huntsville. I had big dreams and knew I wanted to live in a big city. I did not think I would ever move back. After working at Southern Living I decided to move to New York, which had been a dream of mine growing up. I did and had the opportunity to work for Us Weekly magazine. Without hardly any money I made a life there, it was a dream. Then upon getting engaged I moved back to Alabama to Birmingham where my fiance lived (also a Huntsville native). Slowly life brought us back to Huntsville, and now there is no place in the world I would rather be. The people in this town are extraordinary, every single day I learn something new that makes me so proud to live here, and when I think about the landscape of this city - the beauty, the history, the mountains, the small businesses, the cleanliness - it is no doubt that we live in a very special place.

In the article Fall In Love With Huntsville  we interview people who have moved from other cities or returned to Alabama to make Huntsville their home. In Baby Love we highlight the challenging, yet precious relationship of mother and child. In How To Love Your Teenager by author Kari Kampakis, we learn sound advice on how to parent during those hard years. In this issue we also feature two of Huntsville's most elegant and stylish women in Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend. And we learn about the incredible charity Free To Teach in For The Love Of Teaching.

It's no secret that Huntsvillians love adventure, so we travel to America's most loved destination, Yellowstone. You will also enjoy our Valentine's Gift Guide, Date Night Ideas, and a recipe for a night in.

We do live in a very special place filled with special people. Remember that love is a verb, and if you want your city to love you back, you also have to learn to love her well. They say great relationships thrive on these 3 things: feeling safe, feeling seen and feeling cherished - we live in a city where all of these are exemplified every single day.

FALL IN LOVE With Huntsville

WHY THESE RESIDENTS LOVE NORTH ALABAMA

Huntsville continues to grow, attracting both locals and newcomers alike. Get to know a few people who have moved here and share their unique love for Huntsville and what makes it special to them.

ARTICLE BY HANNAH KANFER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER TARKINGTON

Dr. Chirumamilla, originally from Michigan, has lived across the world in places as varied as India, Algeria, Winston-Salem in North Carolina, Brooklyn, and Southern Ohio. Now, she calls Huntsville home and has experienced its unique sense of community firsthand.

“When our son was about three years old, we were briefly and suddenly without a nanny and could not miss work,” she recalls. “I was on the phone, distraught about childcare, when a colleague overheard my conversation and offered for his wife to watch our son for the days we needed help. This was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I had not yet met his wife. They were kind enough to step in, and she has since become one of my best friends in town.”

For Dr. Chirumamilla, this moment reflected the culture of Huntsville. “It may seem cheesy, but the culture here is about loving out loud,” she says. “To me, that means being genuine and caring. We compliment each other’s attributes and give one another their deserved flowers without a hidden agenda. People who show enthusiasm are rewarded here with others who are willing to participate and encourage. For instance, I asked colleagues to join a charity kickball tournament, and within weeks, 250 people turned up on a Saturday to play.”

Huntsville has also been a springboard for Dr. Chirumamilla’s career growth. “Coming out of my cardiology fellowship in 2019, I had worked in both a metropolis like Brooklyn, New York, and a smaller town like Dayton, Ohio. While interviewing for jobs, I knew I wanted to live in a community where I could provide excellent medical care and maintain a work-life balance. I was drawn to The Heart Center at Huntsville Hospital because of the expertise of its cardiologists and their vision for further expansion,” she explains.

Over the past five years, Dr. Chirumamilla has flourished professionally in Huntsville. “Our group has helped me find my voice in championing cardio-oncology, the cardiac care of cancer patients, and cardio-metabolic management. I’ve had the opportunity to speak at local women’s groups, present at state and national conferences, and even vote on professional boards,” she says.

Dr. Chirumamilla also values the accessibility of Huntsville’s leaders and the vibrancy

DR. SRAVYA Chirumamilla

of the city’s culture. “As a board member of the Asha Kiran Foundation and a participant in Leadership Huntsville, I’ve been impressed with how approachable elected officials, NASA and military leaders, as well as artists and artisans, are. One day, we’re watching the Artemis launch with folks who worked on the mission; the next, we’re having dinner with Grammy-awardwinning musicians who make chart-topping hits. There is so much vibrancy in this town for those who seek to embrace it.”

BARDIA Barmaki

Bardia was born and raised in San Francisco. After high school, he joined the Air Force, which took him across the country. Along the way, he met his wife, Brittany, a two-time UAH graduate who had previously lived in Huntsville and loved it. When it came time for Bardia to retire from the Air Force, he and Brittany decided to leave California and settle in Huntsville. After just one visit, they fell in love with the city and have called it home since 2022.

While Bardia does miss California’s diverse food scene and the lack of mosquitos, he’s found the transition to Huntsville surprisingly easy. “The kids have just meshed so well here, we have great friends, and I think that speaks to the values of the community and how much easier it is to balance work and life here,” he shared. Huntsville has also been a great place for Bardia’s career growth after his military service. “This is where I really started my civilian career, and it’s been great so far. The community is built around supporting government industries, which aligns perfectly with my background and experience. I’ve met some amazing people over the past two years and look forward to eventually retiring here—for real this time.”

Pascal is originally from the Paris Metro area and his wife, Michèle is from Roanne, an area near Lyon, in the center of France known for its long culinary tradition. Pascal and his wife moved to Huntsville 20 years ago due to Pascal’s job, at the time involved with electronics for the Automotive industry and Huntsville was the site for a new plant. Huntsville and Paris are quite different in a lot of ways but not all is such a bad trade-off, while Huntsville is a much slower pace of life it allowed Pascal to enjoy less traffic jams, time constraints and stress.

Living and working in Huntsville, Pascal discovered a community full of incredible people, individuals with strong values who were always ready to help, and who truly believed any goal was achievable. These qualities were not only evident in the team he worked with but also in the broader community that supported them.

“I found the same values and sense of fun in the local tennis community too!” Pascal shared.

“I love playing at the Huntsville Tennis Center or wherever United States Tennis Association matches take us.”

Pascal and Michèle loved Huntsville so much that they put down roots and decided to stay. When it was time for Pascal to retire from his corporate job, they decided to pursue their dream and open Le Macaron French Pastries Cafés.

DONNA Burns

Donna, originally from Connecticut, moved to Alabama when she was 17. After meeting her husband Alan, they lived in the DC area for over 27 years before deciding to move to Orange Beach, Alabama. “We would vacation there and had a second home, and one day we thought, “Hey, let’s live at the beach!”  Donna shared.

While living at the beach had its perks, other factors about their location started to take priority.” Healthcare became more important, as did being closer to family and friends, having more cultural opportunities, being part of a larger community, and housing affordability—all of these things started to matter more,” Donna explained. “Don’t get me wrong, living at the beach is amazing, but it’s a resort town, and we were looking for deeper roots. We considered many places to live, since we both can work from anywhere. Huntsville checked all the boxes, and we were heavily recruited by family and friends! We like to say we traded the water for the mountains when we moved from Orange Beach to Huntsville,” Donna said.

Mountains have been a highlight of Donna’s move to Huntsville. One of her favorite spots is the Madison County Nature Trail. Living on Green Mountain, she often walks the trail with her wonderdog, Diesel.

“Huntsville is such a giving community. I am overwhelmed by how many worthy causes exist and how the community rises to show support in so many ways. I recently participated in Leadership Greater Huntsville’s Focus program and I was so impressed by how much I learned; it was truly a memorable experience,” said Donna.

Mathew was born in North Jersey, with a brief stint in Scottsboro, AL, from the 2nd to 9th grade, before moving back to North Jersey. When his parents retired to Scottsboro in 2008, Mathew discovered his own love for the city through his frequent visits. By 2011, he and his wife, Stephanie, decided to settle in Huntsville for good.

One of Mathew’s favorite aspects of Huntsville is its music scene, which he believes is incredibly underrated. “From the smallest venues and local bars to larger venues like the Von Braun Center or Orion Amphitheater, we have an amazing music scene here in Huntsville,” he shares. “When I first moved here, we used to go to Nashville for ‘big name’ concerts, but since living here, I’ve seen Elton John at the Von Braun Center and Dave Matthews at the Orion—it’s incredible!”

Despite his success as a restaurateur and being a finalist for Alabama’s Restaurateurs of the Year, Mathew still misses the simple pleasure of a classic chili cheese dog from JJ’s in Newark, New Jersey.

ANGELA Panzica

Angela is originally from Sarasota, Florida, where she began her career as an integrated marketing coordinator. When her husband, then boyfriend, accepted a job in Huntsville, Angela was immediately captivated by the city’s potential as a dynamic community filled with energy and opportunity.

This vibrant environment soon became the foundation for Angela’s entrepreneurial journey. Building something new from the ground up was no small feat, but Huntsville provided the perfect setting for her to introduce concepts like Stella’s and The Blind Tiger. Earning the trust and support of the community was a challenge, but the rewards made it worthwhile. “Launching Stella’s Elixir Lounge and later The Blind Tiger pushed me to grow as a leader, entrepreneur, and creative thinker,” Angela shared. “The city’s growth-oriented mindset inspired me to pursue my vision of bringing upscale, unique experiences to its residents.”

While Angela will always miss the beach sunsets of Florida, she’s found a new love in Huntsville’s local community and creativity.

HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE THE CHALLENGES OF PREGNANCY?

I was fearful of pregnancy and parenthood for years before we made the decision to have a baby, so going into pregnancy I promised to be gentle with myself as changes and challenges arose. I attended regular pelvic floor therapy sessions at Nesin Pelvic Floor Therapy, and I scheduled prenatal massages often. Physical activity is a must, so I kept up my yoga practice which brought a lot of peace and happiness to me.

How To Love Your Teenager

When my daughter became a teenager, she sometimes did something that baffled me.

It happened when she was tired or had just woken up. She’d stand in front of me, drop her head, and not say a word. When I asked a question, she’d mumble or shrug. I could tell she wanted something, but I didn’t know what.

And then one day it hit me. I noticed her body leaning toward me, ever so slightly, and waiting for me to respond. I realized then that what she wanted was something I hadn’t given her in a while.

A big maternal hug

After this epiphany, I formed a game plan. I knew what I needed to do when she planted her body in front of me. You want a hug, kid? Well, I’ll show you a hug that you’ve never seen!

I’d wrap my arms around my daughter and hold her as tightly as I could. I’d embrace her as long as she let me.

I knew my instincts were right when my daughter relaxed in my arms. In these moments, I was her safe place. I was a source of comfort when she felt tired and weary.

Sometimes she didn’t hug me back. Sometimes it felt kind of odd to make such an effort with no response. But I didn’t take this personally because I knew the hidden truth. She still craved my love and affection, but she didn’t want to ask or tell me what she really needed.

It’s easy to forget this as our children grow up. When they’re small, we distribute hugs and kisses freely because they’re so cuddly and cute. They run to us with outstretched arms, making it hard to resist them as we sweep them up and kiss them all over the place.

But as they mature, they want space and privacy. They stop running to the door when we come home and giving us the rock-star treatment. And as hormones kick in, their cues get harder to read. We aren’t always sure when to draw closer…or when to back off and give them space.

This is why I try to love my teens well regardless of whether they love me back. I try to show affection even when it’s not reciprocated. After all, that’s the essence of unconditional love. That is how we love our children with no strings attached.

Showing love to a teenager without cramping their style isn’t always easy, but here are 10 simple ways to show them that you care.

1. Listen.

The older our kids get, the more important it is to listen. We have no idea what it’s like to be a teenager today – or to be our child – and the only way to understand is by listening and asking good questions.

Teenagers want to know that their thoughts and opinions matter. Sometimes we have to take off our parenting hat and let them talk freely, honestly, and without fear of getting in trouble.

Teenagers have a lot to figure out. They need sounding boards and mentors. When we listen well, they’re more likely to come to us with bigger issues, questions, and problems down the road.

2. Treat them with dignity and respect.

Donald Miller said, “People won’t listen to you unless they sense you like them.” This is especially true with teenagers, who know when we speak from a place of love.

Parents love to commiserate about the misery of raising teenagers, and while some complaints hold truth, they don’t build trust or good will. If you overheard your parents griping about you, would you open up? Would you want to be close or would you put up a wall and save your best behavior for someone who appreciates it?

The Golden Rule applies to adolescents, too. Since overt criticism doesn’t make anyone feel loved, it’s safe to assume that a teenager feels the same.

3. Love their friends.

As our teenagers pull away from us, they gravitate more toward friends. The influence of their closest friends magnifies. Anyone important to my child is someone I want to know, and it’s worth investing time and energy into building a relationship with them. It’s also really fun!

4. Spend time together.

One perk of having older kids is enjoying their company like we would an old friend. When it comes to engaging our teens, the options are endless, and a good place to start is doing what they love – activities like hiking, watching movies, skiing, cooking, exercising, doing yoga, going to concerts, eating at cool restaurants, traveling, playing sports, etc.

Whatever “thing” we bond over with our teenager can go a long way in building memories and also trust.

5. Surround them with empowering adults. It’s been said that it takes five adults consistently present in a child’s life to help raise a healthy child. While parents undeniably have the greatest influence, there comes a day when our kids realize we have to love them. We’re biased because they’re ours.

6. Be ready to drop everything when they want to talk.

Teenagers often want to talk at inopportune times, and if we don’t take these opportunities when they come, they may not come again.

The best moments are always impromptu, so be ready when they come. If you’re driving your child home from a game one night and find that he’s very chatty, or in a good mood as the blares the radio, prolong the drive. Take the long way home or ask if he wants to get ice cream. Don’t waste this opportunity to really connect.

7. Show tough love when necessary.

Teenagers won’t understand every choice we make as parents. Only time and maturity will change their perspective. The teenage brain is only 80% developed, and until they can fire on all cylinders, it’s up to us to fill in the gap. It’s up to us to teach them how to really think.

Youth pastor Cameron Cole says, “We aren’t parenting for our 16-year-old to like us. We’re parenting for our 40-year-old to respect us.” To me this means keeping the big picture in mind, setting healthy boundaries that protect them, and letting our kids face the consequences of poor choices and mistakes.

8. Pray for them – and empower them

through faith.

Prayer is the most powerful tool that we have as parents. God loves our children more than we do, and He has a unique plan for each child.

The non-stop changes of adolescence make this a perfect time to empower our daughters and sons through faith, to present God as their ultimate hope

in the storm, the one thing that never changes even as their life does.

9. Encourage healthy risks.

The world expects our kids to be perfect. There’s no margin of error allowed, and it comes as no surprise that our kids are scared to death to fail.

But adolescence is a time for healthy risk-taking. It’s a time to practice being brave, facing fears, and gaining confidence outside your comfort zone.  As parents, we can help our teens overcome a fear of failure by explaining failure as part of their story, not the end of their story. We can remind them how the road to success is always paved with setbacks and adversity. When better days come, we can cheer on a deeper level because we know the story behind their success. We witnessed the resilience they showed as they bounced, recovered, and committed to trying again.

10. See the good in them.

It’s easy to let our kids’ shortcomings blind us to their good. It’s tempting to fixate and obsess over a messy room, a messy appearance, or a bad attitude and let that become our focal point, the only thing we see.

While we certainly have a responsibility to shape our child’s character, instill good values, and teach basic life skills like hygiene, we also need to see their good and connect with their heart. We need to connect before we correct.

In short, there is no perfect science to loving a teenager because every teenager is unique and has a unique love language.

Appearances can be deceiving, and just because a teenager looks grown-up doesn’t mean that they don’t have emotional needs. Just because they don’t ask us to give them a hug….show up for their game…or offer a timely compliment…doesn’t mean they don’t want us to do these things.

I remind my girls that they’re unconditionally loved, and I’ll savor the moments when they relax in my arms and let me just enjoy being their mom.

Dr. Christopher Parker and his team at Whitesburg Pediatric Dentistry work to create a lifetime of healthy, happy smiles! Welcoming children 12 months old through the teen years, and offering care for individuals with special needs.

FOR THE LOVE OF TEACHING

If you want to find a place full of love, right here in Huntsville, you won’t need to look any further than the free teacher supply store on Leeman Ferry Road: Free 2 Teach. As a community-supported teacher resource center, Free 2 Teach gives free supplies to public school teachers and staff at all 88 public schools in Madison County. If you popped in, you would see teachers filling shopping carts and browsing an array of new and gently used supplies. You would see teachers connecting. You would see volunteers and staff welcoming teachers with a smile and helping them find stickers, or paper, or glue. You would see excited faces as they realize there is a new shipment of books, or an arrival of gently used rolling chairs or new STEM kits. You would see a whole lot of love.

Free 2 Teach was born out of love. Eula Battle, a retired teacher and late wife of Mayor Tommy Battle, knew what it took to be a good teacher. It took time. It took a lot of energy. It took a lot of hugs, and a lot of love. It also took a lot of money. She would drive to Dollar General, Walmart, across the city to a fabric store, or across the county to a garage sale. She was always looking for items for her classroom and her students to ensure her children never went without. Her retirement opened the door to a new chapter, and her gift to our community lives on in the work of Free 2 Teach. Her legacy means thousands of students wake up every day and walk into classrooms where they get a hug, a new backpack if needed, a fresh box of crayons, or an exciting lesson, all because their teacher is supported by Free 2 Teach.

Our model is simple yet transformative: support teachers by inviting them to shop, for free, every month. We are a go-to resource for thousands of educators across our public schools, including school nurses, speech therapists, librarians and more. In 14 years, we have given away over $13.7 million in supplies, all because of a community that cares.

We know, as Eula did, that it takes a lot to grow and nurture a classroom community. That’s why our team of volunteers, donors and supporters work tirelessly to not only provide the basics but elevate the entire classroom experience. We provide classroom décor, student incentives, feminine hygiene kits, classroom furniture, games, cleaning supplies and more.

Our work is focused on equipping and inspiring teachers as they prepare rigorous, joyful lessons and build happy classrooms full of engaged kids. For us at Free 2 Teach, loving on teachers means loving on kids. We believe that when kids have what they need, and teachers feel supported, the possibilities are endless. But don’t just take my word for it: here is a note from a high school teacher, Ms. Grant, about the impact our community is making on children: My kids aren’t used to getting anything new. When I return from Free 2 Teach, they love getting all the new supplies. They are always so excited to help me unpack the bags. Thank you, thank you. -Ms. Grant.

We see so much love for teachers every day: a child donating their birthday, asking for school supplies rather than gifts; a volunteer who loves to organize stickers and restock shelves; retired teachers who bring us their treasured books; businesses or groups who give financially or volunteer to help us complete larger projects. Our community is so supportive. This past fall, we received the largest gift in our organization’s history from Meta’s Huntsville Data Center, of $150,000. This transformational level of funding will support our newly named Meta Checkout Center, where teachers leave with an average of $450 in supplies when they shop with us. Every person or group who comes alongside this work makes a significant difference to education in our community, and we are so thankful.

To love teachers alongside us, learn more about volunteering, donating gently used supplies, giving or partnering with us by heading to www.free2teach.org . We are a volunteer-powered, community-supported organization and work to bring as many people around our kids, schools and teachers – surrounding them with a community of love.

Yellowstone

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

America’s oldest national park, Yellowstone has been captivating visitors since the 1870s. Mountain peaks, thundering waterfalls, extraordinary geothermal features are all big draws of this 3471 square mile park, but even more is the abundant wildlife you will witness as you traverse this

Lamar Valley

beautifully preserved land in America’s true wild west. This is the land of wild bison, untamed bears, roaming wolves, and majestic elk. Traveling in this remote corner of northwestern Wyoming can sometimes feel like exploring another planet.

Most people plan a trip during the summer season, from June to early September. This is when all of the roads, campgrounds and trails are open (though snow is still possible at higher elevations through early July). Unfortunately, it’s also a very busy time with congested roads and sizable crowds. May and October are also prime viewing seasons with May being a great month to see baby animals and in October the fall landscape blankets the horizon.

With five distantly placed entrances, Yellowstone is enormous, and you could easily spend a week here and not run out of things to see and do. We began our Yellowstone journey in Cody, Wyoming entering the East Entrance of the park, the less trafficked entrance. We found a beautiful log cabin airbnb that was situated just a few miles from the park entrance. Within minutes of entering the East Entrance we saw a mother Grizzly bear and her cubs.

On the east side is the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and also scenic Yellowstone Lake, which also has geysers and bubbling hot springs. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a spectacular site that should figure high on any itinerary. The dramatic canyon snakes for some 20 miles, and its fairly steep walls boast a range of colors in subtle shades of orange, pink and auburn. Several waterfalls thunder through canyon, Upper and Lowers Falls will leave you awestruck. Head to the Brink of the Lower Falls to stand just above the roaring cascade, then lose the crowds by taking a hike along the North Rim, where you’ll enjoy some sweeping views of the falls as you walk through the forests beyond the canyon’s edge.

For a truly American experience make plans to visit the Cody Rodeo. From barrel racing to bull riding to calf roping, it is quite a show and an unforgettable memory for the whole family.

On day two we left our airbnb in Cody and drove the Chief Joseph Byway north which is one of the most beautiful drives in America, a 45.9 mile scenic drive that follows the route of the Nez Perce tribe’s 1877 escape from the US Calvary. The Northeast Entrance of Yellowstone is located at Cooke City, Montana. A great place to stop for lunch with restaurants offering freshly caught trout and an array of locally sourced dishes. The rustic log cabin entrance is just the beginning of your great American wildlife adventure. Upon entering we immediately saw a brightly colored red fox cross the road. From ere you will drive through breathtaking Lamar Valley, by far my favorite part of Yellowstone.

I love to rise early and head to the Lamar Valley. The sunrises and sunsets here are unmatched and the wildlife viewing is unlike anything you have experienced. Sometimes referred to as the Serengeti of the US, the Lamar Valley is home to some of the largest herds of bison and elk in North

America. Just after sunrise, the wildlife-watching is at its best, and there’s a good possibility of seeing Grizzly bears, pronghorn (North America’s fastest land animal), moose and bighorn sheep. On lucky days, you may even see wolf packs, which come to hunt the elk. One day at sunset we drove down a back road in Lamar Valley and came upon a black bear mom coming down the mountain with her cubs. We were the only car on this gravel road and sat there watching the cubs play.

If you want to really experience the history and rustic nature of Yellowstone, stay at Roosevelt Lodge. There are cabins with bathrooms and ones without, where you walk to a communal bathroom and showers. The lodge also serves meals throughout the day.

There is horseback riding at nearby stables where you can schedule a ride through the mountains and valleys to see the vistas and wildlife while hearing about the history and ecosystem of the park.

Grand Prismatic

Hiking trials abound, but be sure to bring bear spray, it is a necessary precaution. We chose a few easy to moderate hikes and on one of them a large black bear approached our trail. We moved slowly and cautiously and did not disturb or alert the animal, but we did have our spray on all hikes.

While at Roosevelt Lodge you can make the trek up to the North Entrance towards Mammoth Hot Springs. It is a common occurrence to see Bison lying around the historic site and its lodging. The town of Gardiner, Montana at the north entrance is full of great eateries, shops, and you must stop and take a photo at the Roosevelt Arch.

Ending your Yellowstone journey on the southwest side of the park where you’ll find the most impressive geothermal features – like Old Faithful, Norris Geyser Basin and Mammoth Terrace, gives you an opportunity to stay at Old Faithful Inn where you can easily witness the famous geyser erupt every 90 minutes.

Park-run museums near Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone give insight into the park’s natural history, its wildlife and the geological forces at work deep beneath the earth’s surface.

A nearby must-see is the Grand Prismatic Spring with its psychedelic hues. Take the easy-going boardwalk loop, but for a better perspective be sure to also take the short hike up the Fairy Trail to the overlook above the spring.

The Grill at Amangani
The Grill at Amangani
Amangani

Exiting at the South entrance your adventure is far from over as now you enter the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. After all the roughing it, we made plans to stay at Amangani, a 5 star luxury resort with spectacular views of the Grand Tetons and an unparalleled level of rest and relaxation.

Schedule a spa day, take a dip in the infinity pool overlooking the mountains and landscape, stargaze, and dine on some of the best food you will ever put in your mouth. The Grill at Amangani overlooks the Snake River Valley and snow capped peaks if the Tetons with floor to ceiling windows. The menu created by Executive Chef Manuel Fernandez is local, serving sustainable ranch meats, fresh fish, and seasonable farm-to-table produce.

A visit to the town of Jackson Hole is full of excitement with a plethora of great restaurants, shopping, art galleries, music, and rodeos.

After your immersive nature experience in Yellowstone, Jackson Hole is the perfect way to ease back into society while still feeling like you are on vacation.

There is nothing like Yellowstone in the world, and once you go you will want to visit again and again. The wildlife, the scenery, the history, and of course mom running to the communal bathroom in the middle of the night scared of being attacked by a bear, it is an American adventure like no other, and something you and your family will remember for the rest of your lives.

HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS FROM THE FINDLAY & LANDERS GROUP AT KEEL POINT:

As tax season approaches, it’s a great time to review your financial strategy. Preparing early can help you take full advantage of available opportunities and avoid last-minute stress.

STEPS TO PREPARE:

Gather your documents early

• Review tax deductions and credits you may be eligible for

• Review your retirement contributions (contribute to retirement accounts before the deadline to reduce taxable income)

Evaluate last year’s financial goals and adjust your strategy as needed

• Know when to trust your tax reporting documents (e.g., QCDs, backdoor Roth contributions, HSA distributions)

DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND

An Interview with Loring&Co’s Eleanor

and Caitlin

Sophistication. Style. Grace. Warmth. These words are just a few to describe Eleanor Loring and Caitlin Thomas of Loring&Co. Any time spent with these women is treasured and makes it easy to see why they are experts in the jewelry business. Not only do they have extensive knowledge about fine jewelry and fashion jewelry, but they also exude style from head to toe. Their style is something to emulate.

Loring
Thomas
“Great pieces of jewelry are timeless and will take your look to the next level.”

WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING?

Caitlin: Layering bracelets is a big trend. Stacking bracelets on your wrist, they don’t have to match, they don’t have to be the same width. Layering necklaces is also a trend.

Eleanor: People are even layering delicate pieces. I call it, “playing well with others.” Just a single bracelet by itself looks a little lonesome. You need to have some friends with it.

WHAT STYLE DO YOU TYPICALLY GRAVITATE TOWARDS?

Eleanor: Timeless pieces that I know I can wear for many many years. Pieces that I know I can pass on to my children and grandchildren. My grandson’s wives are going to like me a lot. I look at jewelry as a lifetime purchase. I think one should save their money up to buy pieces that are going to last and be relevant a

hundred years from now. Women should think about their jewelry wardrobe and build on pieces they already have. We always ask husbands or significant others that come in, “What do they already have?”

Caitlin: Something I hear all the time is, “Oh I can’t wear that all the time.” But you actually can. I wear my diamond tennis necklace all the time. I wear it with tshirts, I wear with workout clothes. People need to get out of their heads that nice jewelry can’t be worn all the time, because it should be. It should be worn and enjoyed.

WHAT PIECES ARE MUSTS FOR ONE’S JEWELRY WARDROBE?

Eleanor: Every woman needs a basic gold jewelry wardrobe: gold hoops, gold bracelets, gold necklace and then you need a basic diamond wardrobe. Every woman should also own a strand of pearls. Pearls will always speak of quiet elegance.

A statement right hand ring is something every woman should have.

Caitlin: Also I think there is a distinction between high end jewelry like an emerald ring and then fashion jewelry like Marco Bicego. And when you build your jewelry wardrobe both should be on your list.  I had a friend say recently, “I just don’t need anymore jewelry.” To which I say, “You always need more jewelry.”

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HEIRLOOM PIECES?

Eleanor: I have a locket from my father who fought in World War II. My parents were married December 24 and then he shipped out December 26. He bought my mother a locket and on the back side of it a photo of him in uniform. He sent that back to my mother when he was stationed in London. She cherished it and now I cherish it and hopefully other generations will cherish it too.

Caitlin: My wedding band which is a type IIa diamond from the Golconda mine, which shut down in the 1800’s. They are the purest diamonds that have ever been mined, so I feel like that is the most special piece I own.

WHAT STAPLES DO YOU WEAR OVER AND OVER THAT EVERYONE SHOULD OWN?

Eleanor: Every girl needs diamond hoops. And I never go without my watch. A watch isn’t just a function, it is a reflection of your style.

Caitlin: I would say diamond studs.

HOW CAN JEWELRY ELEVATE YOUR STYLE?

Caitlin: I know so many people who love fashion and clothes, but say they are not a jewelry person. But you should be a jewelry person. Jewelry enhances your look. Great earrings frame your face. Great pieces of jewelry are timeless and will take your look to the next level.

Eleanor: It is putting your best foot forward.

Favorite Date Night Spots

We asked some locals to share their favorite date night spots and they delivered! Here’s their roundup of the best places to go for a nice, intimate outing in Huntsville!

Anna Husband- Gilded Moth/The Little Green Store

Domaine South and Cotton Row are both must-visits. The beef bourguignon at Domaine South is unbeatable. For dessert, don’t miss the peanut butter and jelly at Cotton Row, it’s extra special as it’s where my husband and me shared dessert on our first date!

Dr. Henry Lemley- Hank MD

Definitely Poppy and Parliament. I recommend the French Onion Soup and Shepards Pie.

Jason Landers- Keel Point

My wife and I are steak people so we love Nick’s Ristorante, Purveyor or Char.

Rachel Johannes- HomeRn

With our hectic schedules, date nights are always spontaneous! We love grabbing a seat at the bar at Commerce Kitchen, it has such a great atmosphere and amazing cocktails. My favorite dish is the fried goat cheese salad.

Sharon RauhEncore Aesthetics

We like to start the evening with martinis at Cotton Row, followed by a delightful dinner at the same spot. Afterward, take a stroll through downtown and see where the night takes us—maybe we’ll discover live music, axe throwing, dancing, or perhaps another exquisite cocktail with a view of the park!

PAELLA: A

VALENTINE’S

MEAL IDEA

Stay in, avoid the crowds, and savor Valentine’s at home with this delicious recipe

If you are looking for a date night at home or a meal to serve while entertaining friends, it is hard to beat the flavor and beautiful presentation of paella. This dish is a one pot feast full of savory seafood. It does require your attention, but the end result is one that will have your significant other or friends enjoying every last bite.

PAELLA RECIPE:

INGREDIENTS:

• 30 threads saffron lightly crushed, about 1/2 tsp

• 1/4 cup neutral oil high heat, grapeseed preferred

• 2 links Spanish chorizo sliced

• 10-12 large shrimp peeled and deveined

• 1 small onion minced, about 1 cup

• 3 cloves garlic crushed

• 3 medium tomatoes diced or grated, about 2 cups, see notes

• 1 tbsp smoked paprika

• 6 cups chicken broth no sodium preferred

• 2.5 cups Matiz Paella rice

• 1 red or orange pepper sliced into 1” strips

• 12 mussels

• Fresh parsley, chopped

• Fresh lemon

6. Reduce heat to low, and top with the cooked shrimp. Nestle in mussels, hinge side down. Continue to cook, without covering or stirring, until the clams open and the rice absorbs the liquid and is al dente, 5–10 minutes more. Turn heat to high for 1-2 minutes to create the socarrat.

7. Remove pan from heat, cover with aluminum foil, and let sit for 5 minutes before enjoying. Sprinkle with fresh chopped parsley and squeeze just a splash of fresh lemon. Serve.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Stir the saffron into 1 /4 cup hot water in a small bowl and let bloom for 15 minutes. In a 16″–18″ paella pan, heat the oil over medium-high heat.

2. Add the chorizo. Add the the shrimp and cook, flipping occasionally, until browned, about 5 minutes, then transfer the shrimp to a plate, leaving the meats to sear in the pan.

3. Add the onions, garlic, tomatoes, and paprika and cook, stirring often, until the onions soften, about 6 minutes.

4. Add the saffron and 4 cups of chicken stock.

5. Sprinkle in the rice, distributing evenly, then add the peppers on top. Cook, uncovered, without stirring, until rice has absorbed most of the liquid, about 12-15 minutes. If the pan is larger than the burner, rotate it every two minutes to evenly distribute the heat. Once the stock is low enough, add the remaining 2 cups chicken stock.
