New Year, New Day

New Year, New Day
"Nothing changes if nothing changes." Someone told me years ago, "If you want to change just do one thing different. That small change could catalyze your life in a way that you would never think." Just change something and that will begin to weave changes throughout your life. Years ago I did Dry January and enjoyed it so I incorporated breaks from alcohol throughout the year and then did Dry January again the next year. I liked the way I felt and then after much reading and reflection thought, "Why do think I have to drink at all?" So I challenged myself to not drink alcohol for one year, at the end of that year I felt so good and I had so much clarity, energy, stabilized moods, and this permeating peace - I kept going. 2024 marked 5 years without drinking alcohol, something I never thought I would give up. That one lifestyle change led to many changes: regular exercise, waking up early, being more productive, getting the best sleep, being able to be fully present, being less reactive, healing childhood wounds, and of course starting this magazine. Everything in life seems to move with ease, even on very difficult days there is an underlying sense that 'it's going to be okay, God's got this." Whatever it is that is keeping you stuck or keeping you from growing, this new year make one simple change. You never know where it may take you.
The name January is derived from the Roman god Janus, the god of beginnings and endings. For our cover we chose this sunrise photo by Eric Forrest. Forrest can be found on Instagram @hsvphoto and captures the landscape of our changing city. Read more about Forrest in Through The Lens

HOW SOME OF HUNTSVILLE’S HEALTHIEST STAY MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY FIT
ARTICLE BY CASEY CREQUE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NADIA KIDD
Huntsville is home to so many who make health and longevity a priority in their lives. Whether through fitness, nutrition, or mental well-being, these people embrace healthy habits as a lifestyle, and are an inspiration in our community. Take a look inside the lives of some healthy Huntsville residents as we learn about their ideals surrounding fitness, their daily routines, and tips to live along, healthy life.
WHAT DOES HEALTH MEAN TO YOU?
Health is having a body and mind fit enough to allow us to say “YES” to all the adventures we want to do!
HOW HAS YOUR DEFINITION OF HEALTH CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
Matt: The concept of a healthy lifestyle to keep blood pressure and cholesterol in check has transitioned to more of a focus on taking in more protein and healthy fats, and limiting carbohydrates, seeds oils, and highly processed foods.
Payton: I was more restrictive with my diet and as a young adult than I am today. I live in better balance now by prioritizing joyful living first followed by healthy living.
WHAT ARE YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES EVERY DAY?
We don’t have non-negotiables. Life is fluid and we feel fairly adept to adapt to the current situation.
WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL WORKOUT ROUTINE?
Matt: Last year it was wake up at 4:40, roll out on foam roller, stretch, run 7-10 miles, hit the shower, hot tub and cold plunge. This year I am focused on mobility and balance so that when my time to run again comes I will be ready.
Payton: This year I have been loving a new adventure of playing tennis. I play four times per week or whenever any of my friends will play with me. Last year trail running was my favorite exercise.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE PHYSICAL FITNESS WITH MENTAL STRENGTH?
Payton: Positive thoughts. I focus on having fun, the beautiful surroundings, and music. Running to a beat is similar to dancing. I may even breakout in a spin to the music.
Matt: Mental strength is what gives me the ability to find a balance in physical fitness. I’ve always believed that to achieve our goals, 1/3 is in our head, 1/3 in in our hearts and the last 1/3 is the physical ability.
OUTSIDE OF YOUR ROUTINE WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES DO YOU ENJOY AND THAT REQUIRE PHYSICAL FITNESS?
We met at dance lessons and continue to enjoy dancing at many events throughout the year as well as in the kitchen while we cook. We love scuba diving, camping, backpacking, and snowboarding. Honestly, there is not much that we do that does not require some degree of physical fitness.
WHAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL AS YOU AGE?
We want to avoid having to say no to things because we can’t physically do them anymore.
WHAT DOES HEALTH MEAN TO YOU?
Health means feeling strong, energized, and ready to live life to the fullest. It’s about taking care of my body and mind so I can show up as my best self and be there to support and protect the people I care about.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP?
Thank the Lord for giving me another day. Not everyone gets that blessing and I am a true believer in the power of gratitude.
WHAT ARE YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES EVERY DAY?
At least 30 minutes of movement, staying hydrated, and finding time for rest.
WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL WORKOUT ROUTINE?
My weekly routine is 4-5 days strength training, at least one workout per week with my friends at Fitness 300, daily walks, and 30 minutes of cycling.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE PHYSICAL FITNESS WITH MENTAL STRENGTH?
There are very few days I really feel like exercising, but I never miss a day. Having the mental toughness to push on when you don’t feel like it is crucial to success.
OUTSIDE OF YOUR ROUTINE WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES DO YOU ENJOY THAT REQUIRE PHYSICAL FITNESS?
I love hiking, rucking, and playing pickleball. I work with kids so being able to keep up with them and not be exhausted is a must.
WHAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL AS YOU AGE?
Having the freedom to do what I want without my body holding me back.
“I used to believe health was all about fitting a certain physical ideal, but now I see it as being happy with yourself physically and mentally without worrying about society’s standards.”
WHAT DOES HEALTH MEAN TO YOU?
Health means focusing on nourishment (not calorie counting), eating a variety of colorful foods, and prioritizing daily movement. I also believe mental health plays a crucial role in overall well-being.
HOW HAS YOUR DEFINITION OF HEALTH CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
I used to believe health was all about fitting a certain physical ideal, but now I see it as being happy with yourself without worrying about society’s standards.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP?
I drink matcha and spend some time on my balcony to ground myself and set my intentions for the day.
WHAT ARE YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES EVERY DAY?
My non-negotiables each day are meditation, listening to a growth podcast, and going for a walk.
WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL WORKOUT ROUTINE?
I usually start with a Pilates class at home or at The Fitzgerald, and then take a walk around downtown with my dogs.
OUTSIDE OF YOUR ROUTINE WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES DO YOU ENJOY THAT REQUIRE PHYSICAL FITNESS?
I enjoy activities like hiking, dancing, and yoga, which all keep me active while adding variety and fun to life.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HEALTHY MEAL OR SNACK?
My favorite healthy snack is guacamole with creole seasoning and pretzel crisps, or hummus with red peppers.
WHAT TIPS FOR YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE JUST GETTING STARTED ON MAKING LIFESTYLE CHANGES FOR THEIR HEALTH AND FITNESS?
Start small and focus on consistency rather than perfection—whether it’s adding a short walk, drinking more water, or prioritizing sleep. Gradually build healthy habits that feel sustainable.
WHAT DOES HEALTH MEAN TO YOU?
Caroline: Health is defined by nutrition, sleep, and mental health. It’s feeling vibrant and full of energy.
Martin: Health is how energized my mind and body feel and whether I have full use and function of my body.
HOW HAS YOUR DEFINITION OF HEALTH CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
Caroline: I used to think it meant minimal eating and lots of cardio exercise. I realize now that it means 7-8 hours of sleep, 64 ounces of water, whole foods, exercise and an optimistic outlook.
Martin: Health has always been directly tied to performance. Over the years I have included longevity in my approach.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP?
Caroline: Exercising first thing sets the tone for the day and allows me to be more focused.
Martin: I eat eggs cooked in real butter with sausage/bacon. Then I take the kids to school when I’m not working. Black coffee to follow.
WHAT ARE YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES EVERY DAY?
Caroline: Exercise, cooking nutritious foods, daily supplements, and coffee.
Martin: I work out before any shift. 8 minutes high intensity minimum. Also, it is a rare exception to eat any carbs before noon.
WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL WORKOUT ROUTINE?
Caroline: Circuit training which involves weight training, cardio, TRX, rower, peloton bike, plyometrics and body weight exercises. It’s important to trick the body into challenging itself.
Martin: The only fixed standard I keep is 2000 meters in 8 minutes on a rower. I try to beat that every time. Stability, plyometrics, endurance, strength and game performance are all on rotation.
OUTSIDE OF YOUR ROUTINE WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES DO YOU ENJOY THAT REQUIRE PHYSICAL FITNESS?
Caroline: We love being outside whether it be walking, swimming, hiking or especially going on a trip that requires a lot of activity.
Martin: ER work, farm work, coaching and playing with my kids, and soccer.
WHAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL AS YOU AGE?
Caroline: To be able to continue to function as I am now and feel good! I want to be able to continue to challenge myself with new goals like doing a cooking show or going back to ballet.
Martin: Healthspan - not only lifespan, but how long one maintains good health into old age. I’d like to achieve a long healthspan and prevent Injury as I age.
HUNTSVILLE MAGAZINE
WHAT DOES HEALTH MEAN TO YOU?
Health is about balance and longevity. It’s about building habits that support a life I can enjoy now and sustain in the future.
HOW HAS YOUR DEFINITION OF HEALTH CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
Before motherhood, health was about ensuring I ate at home more than eating out and hitting the gym at least four times a week. Four kids in, health is about nurturing my body and mind so that I can be my best and be here as long as possible for my babies.
HOW DO YOU SCHEDULE TIME FOR SELFCARE AND EXERCISE WITH FOUR KIDS?
It’s a challenge, but I’ve learned that putting myself last doesn’t benefit anyone. I carve out time early in the morning—before the household wakes up—because I know once the day starts, my time isn’t my own. Waking up at 4 AM is how I prioritize self-care without taking away from my family’s needs.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP?
The first thing I do is knock out 25 pushups. Afterward, I drink a glass of water to rehydrate. It’s a small but powerful ritual to jumpstart my day with energy and focus.
WHAT ARE YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES EVERY DAY?
Waking up at 4 AM. It’s my time for prayer, reflection, and planning the day.
WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL WORKOUT ROUTINE?
I commit to 45 minutes of HIIT exercises every day. It’s efficient and keeps me strong, agile, and energized. I love how it challenges me physically and mentally in such a short period of time.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE PHYSICAL FITNESS WITH MENTAL STRENGTH?
I think of fitness as a foundation for mental resilience. When I’m consistent with movement, it helps me manage stress and approach challenges with a clearer, calmer mind.
OUTSIDE OF YOUR ROUTINE, WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES DO YOU ENJOY THAT REQUIRE PHYSICAL FITNESS?
Outside of my routine, I love salsa dancing and trying out different fun fitness events happening in Huntsville. It’s a great way to stay active while having fun and connecting with the community.
WHAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL AS YOU AGE?
My main goal is maintaining proper nutrition and daily movement to prevent bone structure erosion and stay strong. I want to ensure that I’m healthy enough to keep up with my kids and one day, my grandkids!

CHOOSING TO TRY DRY JANUARY LEAD TO A GAME-CHANGING HEALTH DECISION
ARTICLE BY AMY BAILEY
One of the biggest health trends in recent years has been Dry January, a chance to give your body a break from alcohol and prioritize a fresh, healthy start to the new year. Seven years ago I decided to try Dry January. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to take a break from drinking at different times throughout that year and the next. Then in 2019, thought I would try a challenge and not drink alcohol for a year. At the end of that year I felt so good physically and mentally that I decided to keep going. In 2024 I celebrated five years of not drinking and without hesitation I say that it is the best decision I ever made for myself, everything is better. Life moves with more ease, my brain feels ignited, and there is a baseline level of joy and peace that permeates throughout each day, even on hard days. CONTINUED
I have discovered that I am more productive, more focused, more confident in my abilities, more energetic, more motivated, more creative, more courageous, more empathetic to others, and I find myself with more time for things I love. I am less reactive, less scattered, less irritated, less concerned with what others think, less likely to come up with excuses not to do something, less late (though still late sometimes;), less jealous, and less intimidated by life. I have no time for gossip, meanness, snark, self deprecation, resentment, or letting fear or failure keep me from doing something.
Every single day I see how this one decision has improved my life - from my focus at work; to the way I am able to truly listen; to getting out the door in the morning organized instead of flailing; to socializing with a clear head; to recognizing the beauty and talent in people and lifting them up; to not stressing about every.little.thing; to how I communicate; to believing in myself.
“We all have the power to decide what drinking and balance looks like in our own life.”
— Amy Bailey
meant before, but when I stopped drinking I had to learn to actually feel my feelings instead of escape or numb them. What I learned is it is okay to not feel happy, in fact it is part of life. I gave myself permission to feel other feelings instead of trying to divert everything immediately back to happy. I didn’t have to react to everything, but I could go deep and on those hard days learn more about myself. What I found was that every time I allowed myself to feel, I came out with a new perspective, more gratitude, and stronger. We all have the power to decide what drinking and balance looks like in our own life. I can only tell my story and hope that it may help somebody else. I do think it is worth learning about – how it affects mental health, how it affects our bodies, how it affects our energy. Awareness is empowering, no matter how you feel about alcohol.
The biggest flex I’ve learned is how to sit with my feelings. I didn’t really understand what that
Seven years ago when I did my first Dry January, I was tired of buying into this heavily marketed theme that “motherhood is hard and the only way to have fun is to drink!” So I took a break and did
Dry January and that curiosity began a health journey that was a game changer.
We live in an alcohol centric society in which everything we do revolves around food and alcohol. Birthdays, fundraisers, football games, vacations, after work social events, weddings, anniversaries, festivals, a romantic night out with your significant other, a girls’ night out, book club, brunch, and the list goes on. In recent years even children’s birthday parties and yoga classes have welcomed mimosas and wine with open arms. For years I thought my husband had a tendency to occasionally drink too much, but I drank normally like everyone else, right? And then I pulled back the curtain to reveal the Great and Powerful Oz, and there was our dear friend alcohol.
brain it’s time. And I didn’t like that. Then I began learning about the myriad of health issues big and small alcohol can cause.
“For me, choosing to opt out of routine alcohol use has made everything better.”
I saw clearly its role in low energy levels, brain fog, not being able to really focus, irritability, coming up with excuses to not exercise, feeling anxious when I read to my child at night continuously looking to see how many more pages I had to read. Then a writer friend who had chose sobriety told me about the afternoon ‘tick’. That the reason you want that 5pm glass of wine or cocktail isn’t you choosing to have a drink, it’s because after so many years of regular use, alcohol is telling your
— Amy Bailey
For years I didn’t even realize that not drinking was an option. That you could simply opt out just like people do with cigarettes was a foreign concept. I thought alcohol was a part of life and you adjusted. If you had a bad night or couldn’t handle it, well then you needed to figure that out because alcohol is fun. Alcohol is not always fun as everyone knows. I thought by uttering out loud ‘I don’t drink’ that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy nice dinners anymore, that parties would no longer be fun, that weddings would no longer be fun, that there would be no more tailgating on a SEC Saturday. But then, I did those things alcohol free and they were fun, in fact even more fun than before because I was present in my conversations with people, I could listen really really listen, I remembered the conversations the next day, and I felt good the next morning. The conversations I have with people now are the most deeply inspiring I could ever imagine. For me, choosing to opt out of routine alcohol use has made everything better.
5 WAYS ALCOHOL CAN AFFECT YOU:
Taking Up Time and Space – I hear people complain often about not having time for this or that, and I do get it, some days you just do not have time. But I know for me years were taken up telling myself I didn’t have time when in actuality I did, it was just that the space was being taken up by something else. Almost everyday I was choosing that glass of wine (or 2 or 3) over exercise or that happy hour with friends over meditation or prayerful time. It is amazing the things you have time for when alcohol isn’t taking up that space. Now I have time for all the things that for years I made excuses to put off.
Cancer – Alcohol increases your risk for cancer, specifically breast cancer by 15%.
Eating Habits – Alcohol makes it very difficult for the body to absorb nutrients. Alcohol affects your taste buds. It also increases how much you eat. Those late night bowls of macaroni and cheese take a toll over the years.
“It’s the daily habits that mold our lives.”
— Amy Bailey
Your Skin – So you’ve seen that redness people develop that can become permanent, but there’s also dryness, flakiness, pimples and acne. That’s right in those years when my drinking increased I had breakouts and no dermatologist could explain why, alcohol can cause pimples and acne too. I no longer have breakouts, in fact my skin, besides some wrinkles, is in the best condition it has been in since I was a teenager.
Irritability – Maybe that coworker angered you, maybe you snapped at your child, maybe you just have this overall feeling like you aren’t in control of your days – alcohol can play a role in enhancing anxious feelings.
One of my favorite things about not drinking are my Sober Sundays - I wouldn’t trade them for the world. To wake up ready to see the sunrise and start the day. To go on a 3 mile weight vest walk without a list of excuses not to. I’ll take my Sunday mornings clear minded and ready for any adventure the day might bring. With five years of not drinking booze, I am feeling all the feels. Life is more magnificent and exciting than I ever imagined. Thank God for this decision and all the people who have cheered me on. Cheers to those pursuing a better version of themselves day by day, hour by hour. It’s the daily habits that mold our lives. I encourage you to study how alcohol affects the brain and body, learning how it affects us in big and small ways was the biggest reason I started this journey.

It always sounds like a good idea to make a resolution for growth each year, but it’s common practice to run out of drive or inspiration, leaving us discouraged. Remember that building small habits leads to big results, so if you find yourself off track just pick back up where you left off! These people and their resolutions remind us that you can never have too much positivity in your life, no dream is too big (or too small), and every day is an opportunity to be better than yesterday.
For years I had wanted to take ballroom dancing classes, but I always thought I had to do something like that with my husband. After years of waiting to do it together, I finally realized why not do this on your own? The instructors at Fred Astaire Dance Studio are incredible. I have enjoyed every second of it and feel like I have found a new favorite hobby. The way it exercises your brain, improves balance, and moves your body is something that you can do at any age. Plus I LOVE to dance and love being able to do it at a higher level.
In 2024, I started saying daily affirmations each morning to get my mind right for each day. The power of our words is an amazing thing, putting positive energy into the universe. It truly has helped me see the positive in every situation and be the best version of myself that I can be.
When it comes to New Years Resolutions, in recent years, I’ve given myself grace and not put too much pressure on myself. For 2024 I took a holistic approach. I decided to focus more on people, places and things that I’m passionate about, which meant forcing myself to be okay with saying no to things that don’t align. This has been an adjustment but very rewarding and a goal of mine to continue in 2025. The results have definitely allowed for more peace and joy in my daily life...two things I can never get enough of!!
I’ve been a percussionist on the side for many years, and my resolution for 2024 was to pack in as many music performances into my schedule as possible. Most years I play two or three musicals; this year, I’ve already played four. This year has brought me the opportunity to play drums regularly around the southeast with Dr. Warren Ertle’s Corpse Revivers, an authentic 1920s hot jazz orchestra, with vintage instruments, tuxedos, Brylcreem, the whole nine yards! Life is better when you prioritize what you enjoy.
My goal for 2024 was to get Black Crow Building Co. off the ground and to build the company based on integrity and treating people right, not by seeing how much money we could make or how large our margins could be. I wanted to give back as much as we could and see if a company could grow under those principles and I am happy to say that going into 2025 we have shown that it can!
My 2024 resolution was to prioritize my health. I thought that meant working out more and eating healthier, but in actuality I decided to do a preventative surgery to mitigate my increased chance of developing ovarian cancer, which required me to sit down for about 8 weeks to rest, recover and recharge my nervous system. Taking that time changed my outlook on what a healthy lifestyle looks like. I’ve been consistently drinking a longevity shake, reducing alcohol intake, and I am feeling great and healthier than ever!
I like to focus on a single word each year that inspires growth and improvement. This year, my word was “knowledge.” Choosing a word to guide your year is a simple, effective practice that keeps you motivated without feeling overwhelming. It’s a great way to set meaningful intentions without the risk of disappointment! I also wanted to read more for pleasure—and I’m happy to say I did! Some standout reads were Beautyland and In the Distance.

“Not yet.” That was the response of my first ski instructor when I took a tumble, landed smack on my back, looked up at the bluebird sky, and said, “I’m just not very good at this.” Humbling is perhaps the best word to describe my first ski trip 20 years ago as a newlywed. At 26 I had never
considered myself athletic and my inner perfectionist detested not being good at something, but this girl from Alabama (where we might get an inch dusting every other year) didn’t give up even though she felt like Bambi taking those first steps. With my fear at an all-time high and my frustration nearing an all-out hissy fit, what began as wanting to prove something to my husband became something I had to prove to myself.
Now at 46, skiing has become one of my greatest joys in life and it didn’t come naturally - it came with practice, lots of frustration, and gaining confidence.
Skiing allows you to go places and to see places that you would never experience without skis.
With the magic of a snow-blanketed landscape, the warmth of a roaring fire, the rush of skis hitting the slopes, the indescribable feeling as a parent to see your child conquering their fears, and the vastness of the horizon looking out at 11,500 feet with 5,289 acres of terrain, Vail offers a family trip like no other.

A decade later, in the 1950s, she penned this novel about Herod but died before it was released. Now, we get to discover Hurston’s hidden treasure, which looks at an infamous figure from the Bible in a different light — not as a villain but rather as a philosopher and even beloved king who was more interested in peace than violence. Readers will travel back to the 1 st century BCE, encounter such historical heavyweights as Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony, and, in the end, decide how Herod should be remembered. https://snailonthewall.com/ book/9780063161009
Book clubs everywhere read Black Cake, the highly discussable debut novel from Charmaine Wilkerson. Now she brings us Good Dirt (January 28), another saga about family and the inescapable ties between present and past. Ebby Freeman was 10 years old when she lost her brother, along with a stoneware jar that had been handed down through generations. Eighteen years later, she attempts to leave her New England home behind and start fresh in France. But her past haunts her through that shattered jar, and she has to learn about her family inheritance in order to discover herself. https:// snailonthewall.com/book/9780593358368
If you remember reading Scott Turow’s blockbuster Presumed Innocent back in the 1980s, or you’ve recently watched a new version streaming on TV, then you’re going to be thrilled to learn that Turow has a new sequel sure to make the bestseller list. Presumed Guilty (January 14) also stars Rusty Sabich, now a retired judge looking forward to lake life with his new wife. But his idyllic plans shatter when his stepson is accused in the death of his girlfriend and Rusty has to step back into the courtroom. https://snailonthewall.com/ book/9781538706367
And we can’t highlight January books without including one of the most anticipated books of 2025: Onyx Storm , the third book in the mega-hit fantasy series by Rebecca Yarros. The Snail on the Wall won’t make readers wait an extra minute to find out what happens to the characters who have been competing for their lives in Iron Flame and Fourth Wing. We’ll be handing out copies when the clock strikes midnight on January 21. https://snailonthewall.com/book/9781649374189
This Huntsville photographer captures beautiful moments in our growing city
ARTICLE BY AMY BAILEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC FORREST
Meet Eric Forrest, Commercial Photographer, Engineer, and University Lecturer. Eric was inspired to start capturing Huntsville’s growth through the lens. His favorite times of day are sunrise and sunsets. And with a new year rising with new beginnings, we wanted to learn more about the man behind the social handle @hsvphoto.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN HUNTSVILLE?
I transferred from Boston 10 years ago.
WHAT DREW YOU TO PHOTOGRAPHY?
I started as a PAPA-razzi , photographing my family and it grew from there.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHING HUNTSVILLE?
Huntsville is growing so fast. The city is constantly evolving with new sites, corners and scenes. My daughter, suggested Instagram as a place where you could go to document first-hand the change. That is what I have done in over 5000 posts at IG @hsvphoto over four years.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LANDSCAPES IN THE SOUTH?
In the south we lack the grand vistas, but I have noticed that our meteorology allows us to have the most gorgeous skies to frame our landscapes. Huntsville is starting to form a cityscape … you will see me climbing the top of the New City Hall parking lot to frame big spring park, with VBC and the Saturn V.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PHOTO FROM THIS PAST YEAR?
I have two favorites.
1. Total Solar Eclipse: You don’t get a good chance to practice. You might remember along the path, clouds were predicted… so I didn’t know where I was going to be until five hours before totality. I drove from Huntsville to Arkansas that morning.
2. Super Moon Over Huntsville. In Huntsville we had three months in a row where the large super moon was close to the Saturn V rocket at sunset. Each time out I met fellow photographers trying to align the moon with the rocket. It takes some planning to know exactly where to stand to make a visually compelling photograph.
GOALS FOR NEXT YEAR?
When @hsvphoto started out, I made lots of imagery of local musicians and artists and offered it to them for free – just so that they had professional. The COVID pandemic stopped our efforts. I would like to resume our efforts next year.
“In the south we lack the grand vistas, but I have noticed that our meteorology allows us to have the most gorgeous skies to frame our landscapes.”
Our Bucket List of photographing all Major League Baseball parks continues with the Oakland A’s relocating to Sacramento. Our Bucket List of photographing all National Parks continues too, after visiting eight last year, for a total of 37 of 63.

One of our favorite meals, especially in the cooler months, is a big pot of bolognese. I’ve been cooking bolognese since I was about 10 years old, and through the years my recipe has evolved. Now it involves the Vitamix too which releases an incredible burst of flavors. Hunker down for a cozy night at home and enjoy this one pot meal that the whole family will love.

A new year is always a good reason to reflect and reset, and while the best bubble bath won’t solve the world’s problems, it might help you forget about them for the night. Whether you purge your closet or start a daily self care ritual, it’s prime time to level up in 2025.
Remember simpler times in a mountain of bubbles, playing with toys, and slathering on the shampoo into a mohawk of suds? Hours on end of splashing about was a daily norm. It is time to take back bath time for the sake of your sanity and self care.
are our must haves for bath time:
