Before electricity, there was the sun. When it set, so did your day. There were no lamps to turn on, laptops to keep open, or phones to scroll through. That same solar rhythm applied to the seasons. Each quarter not only brought new weather but also new principles and priorities.
Spring heralded renewal and growth. Farmers tilled the soil and planted crops while communities celebrated the return of longer days and blossoming life. Summer was the height of activity, with extended daylight fueling long work hours in the fields and festivals honoring abundance. Autumn, the season of harvest, invited gratitude and preparation. Communities gathered to store food, repair homes, and fortify themselves for the colder months ahead. Winter, however, was a time of dormancy and survival. With limited daylight and frigid weather, life slowed. People turned inward—mending clothes, telling stories, and conserving their energy. Meals were hearty and simple, relying on preserved foods like cured meats, root vegetables, and grains. The season became a time for reflection, patience, and hope for the warmth to come.
ARTICLE BY HEATHER SPINKS
We might look back on this way of life with a sense of nostalgia, marveling at its simplicity, but it’s difficult to imagine shaping our modern lives around such principles. Today, we live in defiance of the seasons. We push ourselves to maintain the same unrelenting pace year-round, oblivious to the natural signals urging us to slow down and breathe.
At the start of the year, we craft resolutions, yearning for health, wellness, and balance. But rarely do we question the systems or pace we’re trying to sustain. What if, instead of striving to maintain a constant tempo, we allowed the seasons to guide us? What if syncing with their rhythms could help us reset, recalibrate, and reconnect with a healthier way of living—a life where recognizing the need to slow down is applauded rather than questioned?
As the holiday lights come down and festivities fade, many view winter as a bleak stretch of short days and long nights. But hidden within the cold are profound lessons for health and wellness, starting with the importance of rest.
We often hear mantras about working hard and playing harder, but winter invites us to rethink that dynamic. Nature provides a model: trees shed their leaves and enter a period of dormancy, conserving energy to prepare for the vibrancy of spring. This cyclical dormancy is not just survival—it’s renewal. Similarly, we can use winter as an opportunity to step back, prune what’s unnecessary, and nurture our energy. Rest isn’t just a luxury—it’s a critical foundation for physical, emotional, and mental health.
Winter also reminds us of the importance of introspection. With fewer distractions from outdoor activities and social engagements, we’re afforded more time to reflect on our lives. It’s a chance to assess what’s working, what isn’t, and what intentions we want to carry forward. Journaling, meditating, or simply sitting with your thoughts can be powerful practices during this quiet season.
Along with rest, winter also teaches us patience. In our fastpaced, on-demand world, patience can feel like a relic of the past. Yet it’s deeply tied to wellness. Nature doesn’t rush through its cycles. Trees don’t bloom prematurely, nor does the ground thaw before its time. Winter invites us to do the same—to embrace stillness and trust the slower processes of growth.
Practicing patience might mean enduring the minor discomforts of winter—scraping frost from windshields or waiting for your coffee to brew. But it can also mean slowing down in deeper ways: resisting the urge to force productivity, letting go of outcomes we can’t control, and allowing ourselves to be present. Patience, in this sense, becomes an act of self-care, a way of cultivating resilience and grace.
“We often hear mantras about working hard and playing harder, but winter invites us to rethink that dynamic. Nature provides a model: trees shed their leaves and enter a period of dormancy, conserving energy to prepare for the vibrancy of spring.”
Whether it’s sharing a meal, offering a kind word, or simply being present with loved ones, winter is a time to nurture relationships. At the end of the day, we aren’t meant to live life alone. Challenges are easier to navigate when faced together, and moments of connection can bring comfort and strength.
Though winter teaches us many lessons about individual wellness, one of its most profound lessons lies in community. While nature shows us how to shed unnecessary things and rest, many animals depend on gathering in groups for warmth and support during this time. Though we may not live in the wild and enjoy the luxury of heated homes, these creatures remind us to lean on the communities in our lives.
As winter settles in, consider it an invitation: to rest deeply, practice patience, and trust in the quiet work of renewal. Just as the earth eventually thaws and blooms, so too will you. Let this season be a reminder that every phase of life—no matter how challenging—has a purpose. And, as you carry these lessons into spring, summer, and autumn, you’ll find yourself more aligned with the rhythms of life, rooted in balance, and connected to your own journey of wellness.

If there’s one thing we can rely on every New Year, it’s the collective urge to embrace healthier habits. We press pause on eating processed foods, dive into online searches for budget-friendly superfood recipes, and wonder if we should start drinking detox teas every morning. Usually, after a few minutes of scrolling, the feeling of being overwhelmed has settled in—not only in our minds but also in our stomachs. Enter Rooted Juicery & Kitchen: the missing piece for taking the stress out of healthy habits and, dare we say, making the process enjoyable.
“It’s all about balance, and we’re here to help you find that.”
Located in the heart of Oakley Square on Madison, this organic juicery, kitchen, and plant-based market is a local treasure. Rooted Juicery & Kitchen was founded in 2015 by Megan Tysoe, who envisioned a way to bridge the gap between health and accessibility while making a difference in the local community. For Tysoe, the journey began after her experience in New York City, where she juggled a demanding lifestyle with little time to prepare nutritious meals. Realizing the toll this was taking on her body, she enrolled in culinary school to reshape her approach to food and health. Her passion turned into a dream, and now, nearly a decade later, Rooted Juicery & Kitchen is not only thriving in Oakley but also preparing to expand to new locations and launch cold shipping in the spring of 2025.
Walking into Rooted feels like stepping into an oasis of wellness. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows flood the space with natural light, setting the tone for a fresh and vibrant atmosphere. The shelves are lined with local organic goods, perfect for those who want to take more than just a meal home. Thriving greenery is thoughtfully displayed throughout the space, creating a connection to the natural world and emphasizing the beauty of a balanced lifestyle.
What sets Rooted apart is its approachable yet innovative menu. While everything is vegan—save for a few items containing honey—the dishes aren’t intimidating to those unfamiliar with plant-based eating. Rooted offers a variety of comfort classics like bagels, nachos, cinnamon rolls, and brownies. For those seeking a more traditional health approach, the menu includes smoothie bowls, salads, and wraps, as well as juice cleanse options for anyone interested in a whole-body reset.
During our conversation with the team, they emphasized the importance of listening to your body. “Getting to know your body and what it needs is the key to feeling successful with your habits,” shared Lauren Nurre, one of the managers. “It’s all about balance, and we’re here to help you find that.” This philosophy is woven into every aspect of Rooted, from their carefully crafted menu to their interactions with customers.
For anyone new to Rooted, the team offers a warm piece of advice: don’t come with preconceived notions about what vegan food is. “A lot of people have a scarred mindset of what vegan food is, but there are so many fun and approachable options here. If you’re unsure, just ask—we’re always happy to help!”
Rooted Juicery & Kitchen isn’t just a place to grab a smoothie or a salad; it’s a community hub, a source of inspiration, and a reminder that healthy living can be both accessible and enjoyable. Whether you’re looking for a quick grab-and-go lunch, a cozy comfort food alternative, or a way to kickstart new habits, Rooted offers something for everyone.
So next time you’re in Oakley, stop by Rooted Juicery & Kitchen. Grab a juice, pick up a bag of organic goodies, and soak in the inviting atmosphere that has made this eatery a beloved part of the community. Healthy living has never been this delicious—or this welcoming.
“While everything is vegan— save for a few items containing honey—the dishes aren’t intimidating to those unfamiliar with plant-based eating.”

Born and raised in Cincinnati and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, I hold a deep appreciation for our Queen City. With its vibrant arts, rich culture, and incredible food scene, it’s a place my family loves to explore.
A yoga class in 2019 transformed my perspective on mindfulness and community. I loved it so much, I became an instructor!
As a 5 a.m. early riser, I cherish quiet moments to read, journal, and attend yoga or Pilates classes. Inspiring books or engaging podcasts fuel my curiosity and energize my day.
After 14 years in the corporate world, I realized my passion for helping others thrive. In 2023, I became a certified professional life coach, guiding individuals to design lives that truly inspire them.
Our family cabin, Moonlight Ridge in Red River Gorge, has been a wonderful retreat for our family to experience the healing qualities of nature. As a rental property, we invite you to enjoy it too!
When we talk about "loving local," our minds often go straight to shopping at local businesses, dining at neighborhood restaurants, or supporting local artisans. But Alan J. Howell, the owner of FYZICAL Therapy & Balance in Pleasant Ridge, expands the idea of loving local to include the healthcare and wellness providers that keep our communities moving—literally.
With more than 30 years of experience, Howell’s impressive credentials include serving as head athletic trainer for the USA Olympic swim and water polo teams and being inducted into three halls of fame for his achievements in lacrosse. His clinic, FYZICAL Therapy & Balance, offers a science-backed, patient-centered approach to physical therapy that’s anything but ordinary. I sat down with Howell to learn more about his work, his passion for the community, and how FYZICAL is redefining health and wellness in Pleasant Ridge.
HEATHER: FYZICAL IS KNOWN FOR ITS UNIQUE BALANCE PROTOCOLS AND MEDICALLY BASED APPROACH. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON WHAT SETS FYZICAL APART FROM OTHER PHYSICAL THERAPY PROVIDERS?
Alan: We’re different because of the level of training and certification our team undergoes. Every member of our team has completed all three levels of certification—from basic balance to more complex issues like concussions and auditory problems. This means we can handle a wide range of conditions, from orthopedic injuries to neurological and vestibular disorders. Our mission is to help people get back to living the life they love, safely and effectively.
H: FYZICAL FOCUSES ON ORTHOPEDIC, NEUROLOGIC, AND GERIATRIC DISORDERS. HOW DO YOU TAILOR TREATMENTS TO MEET THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF THESE PATIENT POPULATIONS?
A: We take a highly individualized approach. For older adults, that might mean more focus on balance and fall prevention, while for athletes, it’s about getting them back to peak performance. We don’t do one-size-fits-all care—we take the time to understand what brought the patient in and where they want to go.
H: YOUR WORK AS HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER FOR THE USA OLYMPIC TEAMS IS IMPRESSIVE. HOW HAS THAT EXPERIENCE INFLUENCED YOUR APPROACH TO PHYSICAL THERAPY AND THE WAY YOU RUN YOUR CLINIC TODAY?
A: Working with Olympic athletes taught me the importance of precision and timing. These athletes train their whole lives for one event, so the pressure to get them ready is immense. That experience has shaped how I approach every patient—whether it’s helping someone walk without pain or preparing an athlete for competition, we make sure they’re ready when they need to be.
H: AS A MEMBER OF THE OHIO GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE, YOU’VE BEEN INVOLVED IN PASSING IMPORTANT HEALTHCARE BILLS. CAN YOU SHARE AN EXAMPLE OF LEGISLATION YOU’VE WORKED ON AND HOW IT IMPACTS THE PHYSICAL THERAPY FIELD?
A: One of the most impactful bills we worked on was for direct access to physical therapy. Now, patients in Ohio can see a physical therapist without a physician’s referral, which means faster care. Another big win was the fair co-pay bill, which ensures that physical therapy visits are priced on par with primary care visits. This makes therapy more accessible and reduces reliance on pain medications.
“We don’t do one-size-fits-all care—we take the time to understand what brought the patient in and where they want to go.”
“Loving locals isn’t just about shopping or dining out. It’s about recognizing and supporting the people who make a difference in our communities. Alan Howell and the team at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance are a shining example of what it means to love local.”
H: WHAT NEW INITIATIVES OR TRENDS DO YOU SEE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF PHYSICAL THERAPY?
A: We’re seeing exciting advancements in technology, like devices that help paraplegics regain mobility. Laser therapy is also being explored for new applications, including managing chronic conditions. At FYZICAL, we’re committed to staying ahead of these trends so we can continue offering the best care possible!
Howell’s vision for the future underscores his dedication to innovation and his belief that physical therapy is more than just treatment—it’s about empowering people to live their best lives.
Loving locals isn’t just about shopping or dining out. It’s about recognizing and supporting the people who make a difference in our communities. Alan Howell and the team at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance are a shining example of what it means to love local. Through their expertise, innovative care, and commitment to community wellness, they’re helping Pleasant Ridge move, heal, and thrive.
Whether you’re recovering from an injury, dealing with balance issues, or just looking to improve your overall well-being, the team at FYZICAL will work with you to create a personalized plan that meets your needs.

Make
Yield: 1 pound
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs
1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight.
2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent.
3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com .
16 ounces Bokek Dead Sea Salt
20 drops lavender essential oil
what you do
In a mixing bowl, add drops of the essential oil to the bath salt and mix well; store in a glass jar. Add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of the scented salts to a bath for a relaxing experience. SeaSalt.com
1/2 cup heavy cream
8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup cocoa powder, for dusting
1. Bring the cream to just a simmer in a saucepan over low heat. Pour the cream over the chocolate in a bowl and let stand about 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. Add the vanilla, stir until smooth and set aside to cool for 1 hour at room temperature.
2. Beat chocolate at medium speed until thick and light-colored. Spread over the bottom of a baking dish, smooth and refrigerate 2 hours until firm.
3. Pour cocoa powder onto a deep plate or shallow bowl, and using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, scoop out balls of chocolate. Roll in cocoa powder until coated and transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Recipe from FoodNetwork.com
