Love Local
Ah, dear February, the month when love lingers in the air and we teeter between the post-holiday lull and buoyant energy of spring. While you may be torn between leaning into the season of love or brushing it off as another greeting card holiday, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life—the ones in your home and on your street, in your neighborhood and around your community.

There are so many ways to celebrate this season; perhaps you’d love a night out on the town? Or are you more of a cozy-night-in type? Do you enjoy sweeping gestures and one-of-a-kind ballads or sprinkling thoughtful acts of love throughout the month? Maybe you land in the “all of the above” category!
To each his own, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love and see them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community.
Perhaps, if you’re single this year, lean into loving your local community and those around you—who needs to hear that they matter?
“Love Local” means your local businesses, those in your community—but it also means loving what is near, those under your own roof included. So, grab a coffee at Deeper Roots and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Piazza Discepoli and some cheese from Redden’s Fine Meats and indulge in a movie night in.
I’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. We continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building and community you love!
Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before.
Happy February!

Local Musician Ben Levin Celebrates Spirit & Legacy of Blues with Collaboration

ARTICLE BY BILL FURBEE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RF GRAPHICS
Blues music and vibrant boogie-woogie tunes aren’t usually in the wheelhouse of curious kids—but Cincinnati native Ben Levin wasn’t like other children.
“I started playing piano when I was 6,” Levin says. Now, at just 25, he’s already performed at prestigious festivals around the United States, as well as in Europe and Japan.
He recalls one early teacher in particular: boogie-woogie and blues specialist Ricky Nye. Levin credits the popular local performer with fostering a deep love and appreciation for blues piano.
“Ricky’s been my mentor since I was 8,” Levin proudly shares, adding that he’d be invited to join Nye on stage when attending local performances.
Then, at just 11 years old, Levin began playing alongside his father at local venues.
“Like Ricky, my father has always been encouraging and willing to share his stage. For the first few years I would sing a couple of songs a night, and then support his vocals.”
But it wasn’t long until Levin was ready to see his own name on local marquees.
“By the time I was 15, I had a lot more confidence in my ability to sing, and my father graciously stepped back to allow me to become the bandleader,” he says.
Today, Levin frequently performs alongside accomplished legacy artists like Lil’ Jimmy Reed and Cincinnati King Records session artist Philip Paul, who passed in 2022

“Connecting with older musicians has been an important part of my career,” Levin says.
He recently performed in Chicago alongside legendary bassist Bob Stroger. At 94 years old, Stroger has been performing regularly since the 1950s, and continues to tour and record music.
“He’s truly an inspiration,” says Levin.
In 2018, Levin attended a Pinetop Perkins Foundation (PPF) workshop, which takes place every summer in Clarksdale, Mississippi, known as the “Home of the Blues.” At the workshop, young students study with veteran musicians and collaborate. It was there in 2019 that Levin met Japanese guitarist and songwriter Takuto Asano. Asano has since visited Cincinnati five times to collaborate with Levin. Asano and his family, in turn, invited Levin to visit in 2024 for a tour in Japan.

"Connecting with older musicians has been an important part of my career." -Ben Levin
The student, it would seem, has become the master. This summer, Levin will once again be returning to the PPF workshop—but this time, as a lead instructor.
“It’s an amazing experience for students around the world to gather,” Ben says of the workshop, “in one of the most historical sites for blues.”
To date, Levin has released five albums on the Vizztone Label Group and has three Blues Foundation Blues Music Award nominations, including Piano Player of the Year (2023, 2024).
Levin’s globetrotting schedule allows room for plenty of Queen City and regional appearances. He has a February surprise in store for local fans.
“The second week of February, I’ll be featuring the great Chicago blues drummer Pierce Downer at my shows,” Levin enthusiastically shares. “Pierce is one of the most exciting blues musicians of our generation, and I can’t wait to host him in Cincinnati!” BenLevinPiano.com

STEPPING STONES OFFERS INNOVATIVE SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS WITH DIFFERING ABILITIES
ARTICLE BY BILL FURBEE

Stepping Stones offers many musical performances throughout the year for Adult Day Services participants, including an interactive drum circle.
Individuals with disabilities can struggle to achieve a sense of true independence— something that others far too often take for granted. Fortunately, Stepping Stones is an active part of our community, offering innovative support.
Since 1963, the nonprofit has served countless families throughout Greater Cincinnati with educational, recreational and social services for children, teens and adults with disabilities.
“At Stepping Stones, the work we do is profoundly important to the community we serve,” says CEO Chris Adams. “Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities deserve the same opportunities as anyone else to engage with their communities, build relationships and explore their potential. They are no different from anyone else in their desire to learn, grow and be recognized.”
Adams, who joined Stepping Stones in 2007, embraced the opportunity to serve others.
“Being able to leverage my skill set to improve lives is not just a career choice, but a calling. Every day, it reminds me why I chose this path, and why it matters,” he says.
Adams’ motivation stems from being the parent of a daughter with Down syndrome.
“Like any parent, I want my child to live a fulfilled and meaningful life,” he says.
The impact of Stepping Stones extends beyond individuals, creating a ripple effect that brings “respite and opportunity” to the entire household.
“We don’t just serve individuals—we serve families,” Adams points out. “For families with children of differing abilities, our
programs can offer a rare chance to balance time and attention, perhaps allowing parents to engage with their other children in ways they may not otherwise have the opportunity to do,” he says.
Adams estimates that serving more than 1,000 individuals through various Stepping Stones programs translates to positively impacting about 3,000 to 5,000 lives.
“This broader influence,” he says, “is a reminder of the vital role we play in supporting the nuclear family.”
Stepping Stones has facilities in four locations; the Given campus right here in Indian Hill, as well as others in Norwood, Batavia and Western Hills.
Stepping Stones is recognized as a regional pioneer for their approach to address the unmet needs of families and individuals with disabilities. They developed the first Summer Day Camp in Southwest Ohio for children and teens who had few or no alternative summer program options. Their Step-Up Autism Alternative Education program was also the first of its kind in the region.
The visionary strategy of Stepping Stones allows the organization to grow while simultaneously celebrating its success. As with any nonprofit organization, however, public support is critical to Stepping Stones’ work. One way to contribute to their mission is by offering time and talents to the cause.
“Volunteers can work directly in our program areas, providing one-on-one interaction with the individuals we serve, or they can participate in group

activities to help refresh and maintain our facilities—an essential part of ensuring safe and welcoming environments,” Adams explains.
The organization offers several events each year that are designed to publicize Stepping Stones’ services and to raise financial support.
“These events are a great way to learn more about our mission,” Adams says, “and discover how you can contribute through your time, talent or treasure.”
Contributions are a significant way to provide direct assistance.
“For those who prefer to make an immediate impact, donations to support specific programs are always appreciated,” Adams says. “Every contribution—whether it’s volunteering, attending events or making a donation—plays a vital role in helping us improve lives and build a stronger, more inclusive community.”
