LIFESTYLE LETTER

Darkest Before The Dawn Our fellow publisher of Boulder City Lifestyle magazine lost his home in The Marshall Fire. We dedicate this issue to Andy, Kate and their family and we are honored to share his letter here. For thousands of Boulder County residents, darkness was felt with unrelenting force on December 30th. The Marshall Fire unleashed widespread devastation, but the resolve of our community proved to be far too strong for defeat. For those of us who were around for the flood of 2013, we really shouldn’t be surprised, should we? From the immediate response by neighbors calling neighbors, making sure they were out of their homes, to the firefighters who risked their lives, all the way to the local, state and federal government agencies—it was truly incredible how quickly everyone mobilized. There are so many heroes who have emerged from the Marshall Fire, many that we will know, and many that we will never know. I will be the first to admit that over the last two years, it has been easy to see the glass “half empty,” regarding many parts of society. Yet, while our country may be divided on many topics, the response to these recent events proves that the community of Boulder County is stronger than ever. My biggest takeaway from this experience is that no matter what your political stance, or what kind of car you drive, or what school your kids go to or if you compost or not, there is still an immense amount of love in humankind. I trust that this wave of goodwill that we are all riding can continue long after the rubble is removed and new foundations are poured. We would like to dedicate this issue to the firefighters who worked tirelessly, risking their own safety, to fight the Marshall Fire. With all of our love and gratitude,

HISTORY

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY IRENE SANDERS

M UST SE E | A RTS + CU LTURE

Student Leadership Johns Creek, in partnership with Mercer University’s Tift College of Education and the Johns Creek Historical Society, received a $2,500 Georgia Humanities grant in May to fund high school student research on the history and preservation of the Macedonia African Methodist Church Cemetery in North Fulton County. In early 2022, two special events – at Johns Creek High School on January 27 and on Mercer’s Cecil B. Day Campus in Atlanta on February 18 – showcased four student-produced documentary films. These films covered topics such as the history of Macedonia Cemetery, the relationships between those who lived in the Johns Creek area, the importance of historical research and ultimately, why is it important to preserve such historical cemeteries. Four groups of students in the 2023 Student Leadership Johns Creek cohort representing three local high schools conducted oral history interviews and archival research to produce these documentaries. • A group from Northview High School did a film on the historical context of enslavement and racial discrimination during the Reconstruction Era through the 20th-century Progressive Era. • A group from Chattahoochee High School did a film on the legacy of the Cherokee Nation in North Georgia and how the lives of local farmers, several of whom were of Cherokee descent, intersected with Black residents who are buried in the cemetery. • A group from Johns Creek High School created a film highlighting the importance of historical research and genealogy by focusing on the life and family of April Waters, a former enslaved African American who is buried in the cemetery. • A group from Northview High School focused on the future of the cemetery. “The people we have been able to meet during the process are truly awe inspiring,” said Brady Carnesale, a sophomore at Johns Creek High School. “Not only have I been able to speak with these amazing people, but also their wisdom and expertise make me want to do whatever I can to make a difference.” “Growing up in a new city such as Johns Creek often makes us forget what the place we live in was like before we lived here. An opportunity to work on a project involving the Macedonia Cemetery was an enlightening experience filled with curiosity and excitement. We uncovered the unknown past and made connections to its future,” added Shruthi Balachander, a junior at Northview High School.

The ABCs of

Giving Sunshine on a Ranney Day's big reveal at The Cottage School 26

EDU CAT ION C OR N E R | ARTS + CULTURE

Celebrating 20 years “Where can we begin? From the moment this project concept was initiated, to the final touches on the construction, Sunshine On A Ranney Day (SOARD) and their entire team of professionals made this experience a joy. From the extraordinary lengths their team went through to acquire materials, to working through the holidays and working around staff - their commitment has been nothing short of amazing.” Speaking for the students, parents, staff and many partners at The Cottage School, development director, Kim Weber says a mere thank you is inadequate for the renovation design and construction project, donated by Sunshine On a Ranney Day. Holly Ranney, Co-Founder & President at Sunshine on a Ranney Day was equally as thrilled with the partnership. “In 2017 SOARD completed our first special community project outside of our residential makeovers. We wanted to help our community on a larger scale. Our first special community project was to makeover the parent sleep rooms in Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston. Since then we have completed one each year.” “SOARD’s generosity with this project is simply overwhelming. The lobby is the first stop for prospective students and their families who are seeking a new school home,” says Kim. “TCS offers a soft place to land after many of our families have struggled to find the right educational fit for their student. This project has created a warm welcome beyond our wildest dreams.” Sue Collins: What are a few of your favorite aspects of the reno? Kim Weber: It is almost impossible to pick, there is not one single piece we don’t LOVE! It is truly a custom design - totally unique like our kids. This project contains a variety of extraordinary features, from beautiful flooring to handcrafted and CONTINUED >

specially curated furniture and lighting. Not to mention a breathtaking feature mural by artist Andy Burt, The Wall Nut, which captures the spirit of The Cottage School mission. First impressions are always important. “Our administration lobby is the first stop for prospective students, and with this renovation the first impression just blows you away! It’s a welcoming, cheerful place to begin their journey,” says Dr. Steven Palmer, Head of School, The Cottage School. “Working with Sunshine On A Ranney Day has been so impactful. Each member of their team is an inspiration, leading by example, and giving back to the community.” SC: What will students notice first? KW: There is a sense of light, warmth and welcome when you enter the reception area. As our students come through to meet with counselors, they will be embraced by the calm feeling of the

EDU CAT ION C OR N E R | ARTS + CULTURE

space. A fan favorite is sure to be the wall mural, it beautifully and artfully captures the spirit of TCS. For first-time visitors to campus, when first impressions are so important by setting the tone for a positive experience, guests will feel embraced by the warmth of the space. The Cottage School has been a “home away from home” learning environment since 1985, and has grown to meet the needs of our students. This project enhances that “welcome home” feeling. SC: What will teachers appreciate most? KW: Our teachers work very hard every day on behalf of our students and take pride in our beautiful 23-acre campus. The teachers will love the haven that this space has become. It will provide a wonderful respite during their planning period or at the end of a long day. Not to mention, they love coffee! The coffee bar will surely be appreciated by staff everyday!

SC: This project seems to be the beginning of a lifelong partnership of two nonprofits dedicated to serving children with special needs! KW: It’s a long answer, but words cannot begin to express our appreciation. Our hope is that our actions will. We will continue to partner with SOARD to make the dreams of deserving children come true. Thank you, Sunshine On A Ranney Day, for so much more than just a renovation! SC: So, this project grew from a visit to your Sunny & Ranney shop by a few staffers from The Cottage School. Holly Ranney: We started talking and they were saying they wanted to update their lobby furniture and wanted to purchase it all from our store. As we talked more, I was intrigued to go there to see their space. As soon as I saw it, I knew that this could be our 2021 special community project. What a perfect partnership, since both organizations help children with special needs.

OUR GOALS AT NORTH ATLANTA FAMILY DENTISTRY It’s pretty simple: We want to help our patients and our community get and keep a beautiful, healthy smile! Our skilled and experienced team of dentists, assistants, hygienists, and off ice staff work together to achieve this goal, giving our patients the time and individualized care they need to achieve healthy teeth and gums.

We knew that we had amazing designers and sponsors that would love to help. I immediately called Jennifer Crosby with Crosby Design Group and she jumped on to help make their lobby what it is now. SC: It’s all about the partnerships. HR: We are so blessed to have amazing talent to help Sunshine on a Ranney Day. Andy Burt, The Wall Nut, has been doing murals with our charity for almost 10 years, so we knew we needed to have a customized mural. Our long-term sponsor, Real Floors Commercial, did not blink at the opportunity to install new Shaw Flooring. In fact, they ended up going above and beyond to help The Cottage School! Reliable Heating & Air has also been with our charity for almost 10 years and when we call to ask them if they can help, their guys show up ready. The Secret to 32 Years in Business

ARTICLE BY CATHY HILLMAN

(And Staying Happily Married Too) Jim and I started our business thirty-two years ago, never thinking we would be doing this almost forever. It was a fluke really, because he was between jobs and a neighbor here in Suwanee asked him to complete a sunroom ceramic tile floor project after the contractor walked off the job. At that time salesmen were required to get their hands dirty by learning to set tile in order to understand all aspects of the installation of ceramic tile. He came home with $600 and a bottle of wine, and told me he was going to open a tile company. WHAT??? You have to understand at that time Suwanee was a sleepy town with a brand new elementary school, police station, two Waffle Houses and a McDonald’s. The closest grocery store was either in Buford or in Duluth, as was the closest date-night restaurant. I clearly could not see his vision with three children, mortgage and Volvo car payment to take care of. Gone would be the company car and all the perks we had become accustomed to, along with a regular paycheck. Jim had a vision for this company and failure was not an option... so we got to work! Over the course of 32 years, we have grown from a husband/wife company selling ceramic tile and installation, to one that employs a full team of designers, project managers, subcontractors, customer service personnel, operations and warehouse staff. We’ve expanded our state-of-the-art showroom to include a full section of international ceramic and porcelain tile, natural stone, carpet, hardwood, and granite/marble/quartz countertops, as well as cabinets and accessories. Each person within Hillman Flooring & Design brings their unique experience, insight and passion to bring a vision to reality for both retail and custom build customers. So what’s the secret to 32 years in business AND staying married? Jim and I have never lost our faith in God, in each other, and the passion for doing what we love. We are blessed to have a dedicated staff and more than amazing family, and we look forward to a few more years in the flooring business. So the “secret” for us in a nutshell is FAITH, FAMILY, FRIENDS and FREEDOM. Find Cathy and Jim at Hillman Flooring. HillmanFlooring.com/

owners have turned to Catrina Maxwell of CatMax Photography to capture their work, team, and events at their best. We are proud that Catrina’s work has graced our pages for years! After Leah Meyer Perez of Leah May Interior Design transformed a dark and drab living and dining area in a Johns Creek home into an airy oasis, she knew the photographer to contact. “Cat is thorough and organized,” she says. “She sees things from a different perspective, and we end up with shots I never could have imagined.” When photographing an interior, Maxwell prioritizes showcasing pieces meaningful to the homeowner and designer. She starts her process by selecting the best angle for capturing an overall shot of the space, then works with the designer to highlight unique details. Finally, she achieves the ideal brightness during editing by combining images. Whether photographing spaces or providing branding images for the entrepreneurs who create them, Maxwell combines talent and technique to make her subjects shine. CatMaxPhotography.com CONTINUED >
