Hello friends,
When I travel, people ask what it's like to live in Atlanta. I tell them the food scene is on fire, with new restaurants opening and growing and popups alive and well.
I've only been in Atlanta 15 years, so along with a few million other transplants, it's my chosen home. When we arrived, friendly neighbors in Virginia Highland pointed us toward Fatt Matt's, Doc Chey's and Murphy's. Now, North Highland is teeming with restaurants, some on their second or third turnover.
Here in Johns Creek, we're surrounded by choices for casual dining, fine dining, take-out and brewpub fare.
We go back again and again to restaurants where people know our names. Where the food is consistent and thoughtfully constructed.
Read this issue over coffee at your favorite spot. Share it with friends you lunch with and savor the stories and the people behind the food we love. Have a wonderful month!

FINE DINING, DAILY
Cuisine and conversation makes Parc at
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY FIRELITE STUDIOS
Every year, there’s a special event at Parc at Duluth that residents look forward to most. They primp and pose, and smile a little wider.
The Anniversary Gala celebrates the grand opening (21 years ago this month!) as well as significant anniversaries of residents and staff.
Duluth special
We understand that nutrition is crucial for maintaining health and quality of life, and we are committed to providing meals that cater to individual requirements and tastes.
“Each year, we host a grand gala to commemorate the occasion, where everyone dresses to impress for a night of elegance and celebration,” says Kadie Murrell, Director of Sales and Marketing at Parc at Duluth. “The event features live entertainment and a gourmet dinner prepared by our talented chef. We take great pride in recognizing the dedication and contributions of our community members over the years.”
The pinnacle of the evening is dinner, created by Chef Peter Chiodi. Chef Peter is originally from New York. Graduation from NY Restaurant School marked the beginning of his culinary journey, which led to working in high-end restaurants across New York City.
Chef Peter moved to Atlanta in 1996 and continued to hone his skills in various culinary roles, both in kitchen operations and front-of-house customer service as executive chef for universities and hospitals. In his spare time, Chef Peter enjoys
landscaping and spending time with his wife and two children, supporting them in their sports ventures and traveling.
We sat down with Chef Peter to discuss cooking for the residents and special guests at Parc at Duluth.
SGC: YOUR MENU IS SO VARIED, LIKE A TOPNOTCH RESTAURANT.
Chef Peter: Our menu features daily specials for both lunch and dinner, showcasing seasonal items that residents often request, along with some of my favorite dishes. This ensures that our offerings remain fresh and exciting. In addition to these rotating specials, we provide an extensive always-available menu, offering a wide variety of options to cater to diverse tastes and preferences. This combination allows residents to enjoy both familiar favorites and new seasonal delights.

SGC: HOW DO YOU ADDRESS EACH RESIDENT’S DIETARY NEEDS AND PREFERENCES?
CP: Addressing each resident’s dietary needs and preferences is a top priority for us at Parc at Duluth. We understand that nutrition is crucial for maintaining health and quality of life, and we are committed to providing meals that cater to individual requirements and tastes. We do this by offering personalized meal plans for those residents on specific diets or with restrictions. Also, we provide a diverse menu with many options, and regular meetings with myself for feedback on the resident’s thoughts and suggestions.
By prioritizing individualized care and actively engaging with our residents, we strive to create a dining experience that is both nutritious and delightful. Our goal is to make every meal a satisfying part of our residents’ day, contributing to their overall well-being and happiness.
SGC: WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT DINING AT PARC AT DULUTH?
CP: At Parc at Duluth, we are dedicated to ensuring our residents have a fantastic dining experience. We understand that dining plays a crucial role in seniors’ health and social well-being. That’s why we focus on providing nutritious meals that meet their dietary needs while also creating a vibrant and enjoyable dining environment.
Our goal is to offer meals that not only support health but also make mealtime a pleasurable and engaging experience. We strive to create a welcoming atmosphere where residents can enjoy their meals, socialize with friends, and even host family gatherings. At Parc at Duluth, we believe that a positive dining experience is essential to our residents’ overall happiness and quality of life.

Name of Dish: Espresso-Rubbed, Bone-In Kansas City strip When it hits the menu: It was just added and is available now.
Origin / Inspiration: The bone-in Kansas City strip is one of the most mouthwatering cuts of steak on the market today. As the bone cooks at a high temperature, it slowly releases flavors that can only be found in the marrow and other layers of the bone. I chose to put this on Cattle Shed’s menu with the espresso rub because I thought the seasoning was unique and different. The espresso and chili powder add a depth of flavor that enhances the natural flavors of the steak.

Hair Noodle
When it hits the menu: Now!
Origin / Inspiration: Our roll-your-own angel hair noodle dish comes with a platter of grilled meat of your choosing (pork, beef, shrimp, or betel leaf rolls). You then roll your own spring rolls with fresh Asian herbs, sliced cucumber, pickled radish and carrot, and fresh steamed rice noodles in a piece of rice paper. The roll is then dipped in a flavorful fish sauce, which is a very traditional Vietnamese dipping sauce.

When it hits the menu: This fan favorite has been on the menu since September 2019.
Origin / Inspiration: The original Truly’s French Toast was created by Truly Worthy at the end of the summer in 2019. Truly was a 12-year-old girl with an amazing passion for all things delicious. Her original recipe was inspired by her mother’s brown sugar cream stuffed french toast. A true gem was discovered and now it serves as a staple on RTC’s permanent menu. The dish is in loving memory of Truly. She will always be an inspiration to RTC.

When it hits the menu: It’s already on the menu!
Origin / Inspiration: Lamb chops are a classic dish with a lot of potential for creative expression. Our Turkish twist cuisine offers a rich tapestry of flavors that can beautifully complement lamb chops. Here is how we infuse lamb chops with Turkish flair. Lamb chops are rubbed with a blend of Turkish spices including paprika, oregano and salt, cooked to perfection to the customer’s choice (medium-rare, medium, well-done or chef’s style), served with the chef’s special salad with house dressing, rice and house tzatziki, with an option of roasted vegetables. It goes very well with most of your favorite red wines. You are sure to love it.

ACHIEVING OPTIMAL HEALTH
IN JOHNS CREEK
DR. JAMES HARPER BRINGS OLD SCHOOL ATTENTION TO A NEW PRACTICE IN JOHNS CREEK
In a day where a doctor’s visit can feel like moving down an assembly line, Dr. James Harper is bringing a new type of care to the Johns Creek area.
After practicing Internal Medicine for 29 years in Brooklyn and Patterson, NY as a volunteer physician, Dr. Harper made the move to Georgia in 2019. Dr. Harper had completed his residency at Emory years before, and was excited in 2019 when an old friend turned real estate

agent helped him find the perfect spot to relocate from New York.
Dr. Harper’s wife and office practice manager Nonoka says Johns Creek reminds her so much of where she grew up in Yokohama, Japan. “Everything is so green and beautiful. It’s quiet, but still convenient too.”
The Harpers are bringing a refreshing type of health care to residents. “What sets us apart is that I have extensive experience in Internal Medicine, and experience taking care of a wide range of patients because of my volunteer work with missionaries back in New York.”
When you visit The Optimal Health Care Clinic, which is currently accepting new patients, you’ll get the best of both worlds: extensive medical experience from a seasoned professional as well as careful attention. “People say I am thorough and meticulous. This is what patients love about our services at The Optimal Health Care Clinic here in Johns Creek.”
Dr. Harper and his team are excited to welcome new patients and hope to make a lasting impression with their unique brand of medical care.
“Our primary objective is ensuring that our patients receive the best
possible care and remain in optimal health. Our approach involves examining the fundamental cause of health problems, rather than merely addressing the symptoms. By understanding the underlying cause of an issue, we can offer tailored and excellent care to our patients.”
This is what truly sets The Optimal Health Care Clinic apart from the rest.

Celebrating YiFan
A TASTY BLEND OF CHINESE CULINARY EXCELLENCE AND EXCEPTIONAL HOSPITALITY.
ARTICLE BY SEAN O'KEEFE
Chinese restaurants have become a beloved part of the global culinary landscape, offering a rich tapestry of flavors, textures, and aromas. At the heart of every town in America, there is a family-run Chinese restaurant or eatery. YiFan, Johns Creek’s premier Chinese restaurant, is a hidden gem that offers an authentic taste of traditional Chinese cooking that rivals the finest restaurants in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Known for
Sliced Braised Beef with Chili Sauce
Wood Ear Mushroom Salad
emphasizing fresh ingredients, seasonal vegetables, and highlighting the cuisine’s balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy elements, YiFan is my first choice for an unforgettable Chinese dining experience.
The extensive menu, masterful cooking techniques, incredible craft cocktails, and inviting atmosphere provide a worldclass dining experience combining the rich culinary heritage of China with a warm and gracious welcome home feeling. The ultramodern main dining room is artfully decorated with layered wood installations and an impressive collection of paintings by the esteemed Chinese American artist Zhen-Huan Lu, whose paintings artfully blend Western and Eastern aesthetics. There are some familiar dishes that are perfect for the American palate such as Kung Pao chicken, walnut shrimp, and stirfried beef with rice noodles. But, if you are up for an incredible culinary adventure, be sure to try sizzling cumin lamb, clay pot eggplant with garlic sauce or big mouth bass, all artfully prepared by Fan Wang, owner and executive chef of YiFan.
Fan Wang began her culinary journey in 2017 with a small culinary school designed to teach working families about cooking. Since then, her dream has blossomed into not only everyone’s favorite local Chinese restaurant, but so much more. Located at 6000 Medlock Bridge Parkway, Wang’s dream has evolved to include the main restaurant and bar as well as a stateof-the-art event hall and private dining rooms that boasts one of the most impressive immersive 3D dining experiences in Metro Atlanta.
The stunning 2,300-square-foot event hall is a majestic venue featuring grand chandeliers and soaring 14-foot ceilings.
Be sure to try the Lychee Martini or a Blood Orange Whiskey Sour.
Dining during a lantern parade in the 3D immersive dining room.
Ready for any special occasion, YiFan’s elegant venue is a perfect setting for a variety of events, from bespoke weddings to corporate meetings, intimate dinner parties, and birthday celebrations. No detail has been overlooked. It is a stunning space with modern design and cutting-edge technology. Beautifully prepared food and exceptional service ensure a memorable experience for any and all occasions.
The incredible sound and lighting systems are perfectly complemented by an immersive projection system that brings the stage wall and floor to life. Whether you choose to celebrate during Chinese New Year or in an undersea adventure, 3D video mapping in several of the restaurant’s private dining rooms brings a modern twist to the traditional dining experience by transforming the environment with dynamic visuals projected onto walls, floors, tables, and even the food. No matter which immersive experience you choose, it will add a futuristic artistic touch to any occasion, making the themed dining experience more engaging and memorable.
Not to be missed on any visit is YiFan’s Bar Lotus, a welcoming neighborhood craft cocktail lounge. Be sure to try the Lychee Martini or a Blood Orange Whiskey Sour.
From the vibrant flavors of traditional recipes to contemporary twists, every visit is the best Chinese dining experience.

COMMUNITY GATHERS
A pumpkin patch, 15 years strong.
The Pumpkin Patch at Johns Creek Presbyterian Church is a long-held tradition for the community, spanning over 15 years. Every year, folks call the church weeks in advance to ask when it will be open. They know they can purchase less expensive pumpkins at the grocery store, but it is here where memories are made.
There are plenty of photo opportunities and the volunteers are happy to take family pictures. Home-made baked goods are supplied fresh daily. Games for children are available, as well as a coloring station where pictures may be hung in the patch art gallery. But the big draw is the astonishing variety of pumpkins – sized from small to huge. Some are a more traditional shape, while others may be tall, flat, or simply odd shaped; and the colors range from all shades of orange, to pink, and green. The pumpkins are purchased for decorating (often lasting through Thanksgiving), carving, as well as cooking.
The pumpkins are delivered via a truck from a Native American Reservation in New Mexico through Pumpkins USA. The delivery day draws church volunteers and scout troops to help unload, then safely distribute the pumpkins throughout the patch. The profits go towards Johns Creek Presbyterian Church mission trips, both local and international.
The patch is open to the public daily October 12 – October 31, noon-8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Preschool field trips are available during the weekday mornings. JCPcusa.org

Community Building Student Leadership and
Student Leadership Johns Creek (SLJC) kicked off their 2024-25 program. This year the students worked together to escape four different escape rooms at Odyssey Escape Games in Alpharetta. Our 200-plus students representing Innovation Academy, Mt. Pisgah, Providence Christian-Johns Creek, Johns Creek, Centennial, Chattahoochee, and Northview High Schools didn’t miss a beat and escaped the games in record time while learning about their group mates for the upcoming year.
“I’m really happy I went to the escape room with SLJC. It was a great bonding experience with the new Secretary of State Ambassadors. We worked together, had fun, and got closer as a team.” says Aubri Neal, a second-year student from Johns Creek High School and a member of the Secretary of State Ambassador team. Timi Akinyele, a second-year student from Innovation Academy adds, “The retreat was a fun way to connect with my fellow student ambassadors while participating in a challenging activity. Overall, I enjoyed the retreat. It was a great way to start the program year.”
The retreat marked the beginning of the 13th year of Student Leadership Johns Creek, launching a series of monthly in-person program days. First-year students will engage in community service projects and gain insights into government by visiting downtown Atlanta to learn about our state’s operations; and Johns Creek City Hall to explore the city’s daily functions. Second-year students will focus on developing their professional skills by creating online portfolios, including LinkedIn profiles and resumes, and participating in job shadowing opportunities with professionals in their fields of interest.
