Lifestyle Letter
Letter from the Creative Director
JULY 2016 sales director
Matthew Perry | Matthew@LifestylePubs.com
I am thrilled to be joining the Lifestyle family as the Creative Director, and as a lifelong resident of Kansas City, I am even more excited for the opportunity to bring a taste of our community to your doorstep. Our neighborhoods and the surrounding area have so much to offer, and the rich diversity of talent, culture, life experiences and beauty of Kansas City, are snapshots that I can’t wait to share with you in the issues to come. As my former titles of elementary school teacher, event planner and editor reflect, I thrive off of being creative, discovering and illuminating strengths in others and learning about people’s stories and what makes them tick. It is both fascinating and humbling for me to see the beauty and gifts each person possesses, and it is a true pleasure to get to shed a little bit of light on people in our community. I have the honor of working with the very talented, Paul Versluis, who is joining our team as the Director of Photography. If you are not already familiar with his work, you are in for a treat. He is truly an exquisitely talented photographer, as you will see in the issues to come. In honor of the 4th of July, it is a privilege to give you a view into the lives of a few of our local veterans who have served this great nation. I have always had such an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our country. There is no greater sacrifice then to risk your life in order to protect others. The team at Lifestyle Publications want to thank all of the veterans and their loved ones for the sacrifice and dedication they have made for our country. Personally, this spotlight on veterans is in honor of the friends and family in my life who have served or are still serving our country.

FosterAdopt Connect is a name that fits who we are, what we do and where we’re going.” FosterAdopt Connect works with more than 2,500 foster children and families. The organization recruits and trains foster and adoptive parents, providing extensive programming, resources and support for these families and walking with them through the journey of caring for abused and neglected children.

fter graduating from KU, I was spit out into the world with no real sense of direction or clear path to making this life “work”. They don’t teach you that. They just don’t. I think that might be one of the reasons I was able to land on my feet a bit. I sought out mentors and stubbornly pursued what I thought was the idealistic artistic life. That pursuit forced me to question every move I made. I tried to absorb as much as I could from artists I admired and observe how they were navigating and balancing their lives. The main advice I walked away with, what guides me, is to go to your studio every day and work. Always ask yourself why you are doing what you are doing, and follow every idea to completion and do not worry about what critics say…as long as you are passionate about the work and it is movCONTINUED > ing you, it is not wrong.

Currently, I’m obsessed with the idea escape. I’ve collected hundreds of motel postcards from the 50’s and 60’s, and I’m obsessed. I re-imagine and reconfigure them to emphasize the colors and leisurely atmosphere they so expertly conveyed. My clients share that vague but familiar feeling of pulling into a seedy motel after hours and diving into a strange new pool or filling the ice bucket at a desert oasis. There was always something mysterious and incredibly hopeful about being lost or escaping on “the road”. I’ve made my studio a sort of living postcard. I have a great old neon sign, kitschy beach mural, and trinkets from my travels prominently displayed. It definitely helps get me in the mood to make work! I’ve been so fortunate to work as a professional artist for over ten years… Kansas City has been great to me. To see more of Seth Smith's work, visit www.sethsmithstudio.com.

One Dentist's Way of Giving Back WORDS ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

r. Michelle Olson, originally from Stoughton, Wisconsin, wanted to serve her country as a way to give back for all of the opportunities she had been given in her life. She applied to the health professions scholarship program while in dental school at the University of Minnesota, and after being accepted, she was immediately commissioned into the Army. Upon completion of dental school, she served 4 years on active duty from 2006- 2010. Her first assignment was in Fort Lewis, Washington where she completed a one year advanced education in general dentistry program, which allowed her to work with experienced and talented mentors. After achievement of this continued training, she was stationed in Grafenwoehr, Germany. During her time in Germany, she made close friendships with those she served with and describes those bonds formed as a tight-knit family.

“You tend to form very close relationships and very quickly. Whether it is stateside, overseas or in a deployed environment, you depend on each other in ways you don't in civilian life. Many times you start out alone, not knowing a single person, and you quickly become family and depend on each other in so many ways.”
Dr. Olson was deployed to Iraq in May of 2008 to July of 2009 with the 464th Medical Corp. Her unit was in charge of dental clinics scattered across the southern half of Iraq, in which she was designated as the Officer in Charge at Taji Dental Clinic. She completed the remainder of her active duty service in Germany. Throughout her time in the Army, she was privileged to be surrounded by seasoned dentists who were ready and willing to share their knowledge. “All of my experiences in the Army helped me to become a better dentist and gave me an abundance of experiences that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. In addition, I was able to live in Germany and travel all over Europe, which was an experience that I would only have had from being in the Army.”
After completing her four years of active duty, Dr. Olson spent her first year in Virginia Beach, and finally settled in Kansas City in 2011. Transitioning back to civilian life was definitely an adjustment for her, because not only was she acclimating back to American culture, but she also had to establish new business connections within her profession and establish new friendships. “I was starting over again in a new location, but didn't have the same support network that was available when I was in the Army, so it was more challenging.” In the summer of 2015, she married her husband, Angel, whom she met in 2008 while deployed in Iraq. Angel served 20 years in the Navy and retired in 2014. Dr. Olson went on to start her own dental practice in 2014, Quivira Park Family Dentistry, located in Overland Park. CONTINUED >

“This was a big step for me, and I feel my time in the Army helped prepare me for this. I've never been afraid to take on challenges or step into the unknown.”
The dedication, work ethic and attention to detail that is required in the military are all strengths that make Dr. Olson successful in her practice today. Dr. Olson is known for her conservative approach to dentistry but is meticulous with her work, making sure it is done right the first

COSTA RICA (CON TI N UED)
"We rented a car and traveled around the country and eventually landed on a beach we now call home." Eight years ago they made a “five year” plan that if they were not both 100 percent happy with their lives in Kansas City, they would move to Costa Rica. They had traveled there in 2007 and fell in love with the beauty, the energy, and the excitement of the country. In 2015, they took a leap of faith and moved to Playa Hermosa, Puntarenas where they bought a house, a car, and enrolled their fouryear-old son, Henry, in school. The Wades had traveled internationally for most of their lives, both together and separately. They had been to the beaches of Florida, Mexico, Greece, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Australia, Italy, Hawaii, Turks & Caicos, and Puerto Rico, but they always felt that Costa Rica had a different energy about it. “There is no place more beautiful, peaceful, or more exciting than Costa Rica. It is a paradise for an adventurous spirit.” There is such biodiversity in Costa Rica, not only because it's a land bridge between North and South America, but also because the terrain is so varied, and there are weather patterns moving in from both the Pacific and Atlantic/Caribbean. There are impressive volcanoes, mountain areas, rivers, lakes, and beaches all throughout the country. There are many beautiful beaches - most of the popular ones are on the Pacific side, but the Caribbean has many expansive beaches as well. Lindsey is still very much involved with his Kansas City businesses, and they still own a home in Kansas City, so they are able to travel back often, which has helped with the transition for their son. Moving to Costa Rica hasn't been easy, but it has been worth it.

NAVY CAPTAIN
JEFFREY WAGONER A local veteran's story of service ARTICLE TAMMY RICHARDS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
R
etired Navy Captain, Jeffrey Wagoner, was born in Oregon but spent most of his childhood in what he considers his home town, Clinton, Missouri. His parents were the adventurous type and moved to Oregon shortly after they were married, kind of a “grass is greener” thing. His father raced cars, but he always kept his day job driving logging trucks. His mother worked as a secretary for the FBI right out of high school in Washington DC. "I recall in elementary school, writing an essay about my parents and stating that my father was a race car driver and my mother worked for the FBI. Needless to say, my mother was called in to discuss my wild imagination. The funny thing is that it was all true."
In Clinton, their family ran a hog farm. Captain Wagoner has great memories of growing up on a farm, “I remember as part of my chores, driving a full sized tractor and a Ford dump truck when I was only 10 years old." Sadly, they lost the farm in 1977, so his dad took a job working construction, but died in an accident a few months later. As a single mother of four children, his mother worked as a secretary at the county courthouse, and the children worked as well. “ My first real 38

job was at my uncle’s gas station, Beebe’s DX, when I was 13.” Captain Wagoner recalls. “My grandfather had a mechanic’s shop next door where I spent a lot of time as well.” He feels lucky to have grown up in a small town like Clinton where he had a lot of people looking out for him. The whole town became much like an extended family. Teachers, coaches, scouting leaders, and friends’ parents cared and supported him in extraordinary ways. After graduating in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri, Captain Wagoner hoped to attend law school; he applied to only one. He says, “ I had convinced myself I would get accepted, and that I would also receive a full ride scholarship. I may have had a shortage of cash, but no shortage of ego.” The scholarship fell through, and he found himself back home in Clinton, MO. That summer, the movie “Top Gun” was popular, and as he left the theatre he wondered if flying jets for the Navy could be a solution to his current situation. With absolutely no flying experience and a college degree that in no way prepared him in for a military career, he drove to Kansas City and applied to be an aviator. At that time, many other people his age were trying to do the same thing. He credits being an Eagle Scout for setting him apart from much of his competition. “Being an Eagle Scout not only looked good on my application, but more importantly, scouting instilled in me a sense of service that is important in serving successfully in the military.” Captain Wagoner got his commission through Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS), Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida and remained there for flight school. “There was no “Maverick” or “Iceman” in the real Naval aviation.” Captain Wagoner remembers, “ My call sign (nickname) was 'Cheese'. You got your call sign for doing something stupid or embarrassing or both.” After 6 years active duty, Captain Wagoner served as a drilling reservist for 17 years. Both provided a variety in missions, including cruising from San Diego around Cape Horn at the tip of South America to Virginia on an aircraft carrier that needed to be overhauled. Flying 43 missions in the Persian Gulf and serving as a lead planner for international security forces during the 2004 Athens Olympics, each offered opportunities to visit many ports of call including Rio de Janeiro and Hong Kong. offered life lessons; attention to detail, accepting responsibility for one’s actions and service to others are some that stand out to him. Today Captain Wagoner’s life is reflective of passions and interests formed throughout his past. He and his wife, Pilar, met when her father, a Spanish Air Force Officer, was stationed at the same base in San Diego. They’ve been married 22 years and have three children. Alex is a junior at Mizzou, Max is a junior at Blue Valley Northwest, and Sofia will be in second grade in the fall. "With two overly-protective brother's, I suspect she won't have a date until she's in her mid-20's." A love of cars handed down from his father and grandfather influenced him to open the Kansas City Automotive Museum, the only one of its kind in the area. "I'll only take credit for getting the museum started, because there are a lot of people who have worked hard and donated generously to make it a reality." He went on to complete his law degree, eventually starting his own practice, WM Law, dealing with bankruptcy and estate planning. “I believe the experience of losing our farm led me to the bankruptcy practice.” explained Captain Wagoner. "Both practice areas of estate planning and bankruptcy focus on service to others and provide a sense that your life’s work is helpful and important to others." By design, a very high percentage of the attorneys at WM Law are veterans or have a close connection to the military. "The attention to detail, ethics and commitment to service learned in the military are carried over to the culture of the law firm," says Wagoner. Captain Wagoner is a wonderful example of the type of people that have been and continue to be the fabric of our nation. His dedication to his country and service to others, make him a true asset to our community.

I hope my tidbits of "expert advice" reach out in to the non-expert community and inspire you all to try something new. If you do nothing else, do this move:
The Push-up. There is no movement better for building overall strength. Don't be intimidated; you don't need to be a Marine. Start with a modified version with your hands on your counter top. Do 10 of each variation, every day. Next week, increase it to 15. Week 3, try it on your knees. It takes less than 10 minutes a day. Recognize your progress as you get stronger and be proud.
The standard push-up:
Photos by Paul Versluis
Targets arms, shoulders, core & chest.
1. Place hands on mat, directly below shoulders. 2. Zip your abs up & pull belly button into your spine. Your abs protect your back. Keeping them up & tight is the MOST important thing. 3. Tilt hips forward creating a diagonal line. Either stay on knees or come up on your toes. 4. Drop your chest towards the ground, in control, then simply push it back up.
The wide
stance push-up: Targets primarily chest and also abs, back & shoulders 1. Use the same form as the standard push-up, but place your hands wider than your shoulders. Your elbows will be slightly flared. 2. Drop your chest to the ground, and use the strength in your chest to push back up. 3. This is a slightly easier than the standard.
The tricep push-up:
Targets primarily triceps (back of your upper arms) also shoulders, back & abs 1. Use the same form as the standard push-ups, but this time you squeeze your elbows into your side. Place your hands just a few inches apart, directly under your chest. 2. Drop your chest as low as possible, keeping your elbows glued into your rib cage. 3. This push-up takes some time to develop the strength. If you cannot take your chest all the way down, even dropping a few inches will work the muscles and build strength. 46

ello there! I’m Angi, renovator, design lover and incurable DIYer.
I’m excited (and honored!) to share my
do-it-yourself adventures with you! A few fun facts about yours truly: I’m a lover of all things vintage and modern, but utterly obsessed with handmade. When I’m not knee deep in renovating projects (we’re working on our second fixer upper), you’ll likely find me surfing craigslist like a track star champ. My high school sweetheart (now hubby) is a dream! He can create ANYTHING and truly is my right hand man. I’m a proud momma of two fearless boys by day and a DIY daredevil by night. My best work is achieved when my family (and the rest of Kansas!) is fast asleep. I’m a firm believer that when you face a challenge, don’t give up; my greatest masterpieces came from what I initially thought were “failures.” I have a love / hate relationship with sugar, I’m on an endless search for more hours in the day, and I love, love, LOVE all things gold.

To Canvas In A Snap T
his is one of my constant “go to” DIY projects. It’s fast, it’s easy and it looks oh so professional. I love displaying photos, but I
don’t necessarily love a lot of photo frames. These canvases create a crisp, clean look…. All in about 30 minutes! Let’s get started.
Step 1: • First things first, grab your supplies. • Photo on photo paper • 1 ½ inch thick wrapped canvas • Mod Podge in Matte finish • Black spray paint in Satin finish • Clear spray paint in Satin finish • 4 inch or 6 inch foam paint roller • Small paint tray • Place your photo on the clean, dry canvas to make sure it fits correctly. Trim the edges if necessary.
Step 2: Spray paint the canvas sides and a little of the top with the black spray paint. It is VERY important to let this dry completely.
Step 3: Using your foam roller, roll Mod Podge over the entire top of the canvas. Center your photo on top of the wet Mod Podge. Smooth the photo with your hands starting in the middle and pushing out toward the edges
Step 4: Roll a thin even layer of Mod Podge over your photo. This is a little scary “painting” over your photo, but I promise it will dry clear. Once it is covered with a thin layer start at one side and roll straight rows from side to side, in the same direction, as to avoid roller lines once it dries. If you see small bubbles in the wet Mod Podge, it is too thick. Thin it out by taking an almost dry roller over the photo to lift some of the Mod Podge. Repeat until the bubbles are gone. Let this dry completely.
Step 5 • Spray the top and sides of the entire canvas and photo with satin spray paint. • Dry…Hang….High Five. Congratulations on your new Photo Canvas! This same technique can be used on 4x4 tiles of your choice to create custom coasters. You will add a bit of Peel and Stick Cork or felt to the back of the tile so the coaster doesn’t scratch. Cheers! July 2016 | Johnson County Lifestyle

THE DOL’S
FIDU CIA RY RU LE: BAD FOR THE SMALL GUY? BY JESSICA SEARCY-MALDONADO
B
ackdoor payments, hidden fees, loopholes in the rules…these were the conflicts of interest buried in fine print that advisors who were not acting as fiduciaries used to chisel away about a quarter of their clients’ retirement savings. When the Department of Labor issued their fiduciary rule, the theme was clear: when advising clients on retirement, advisors would legally be considered fiduciaries required to put their clients’ best interests before their own interests and excessive profits and loopholes would no longer stand. This sounds great for the investor, but what about the hidden consequences? During the DOL commenting period, a period where comments could be voiced to help shape the final rule, one concern heard was that the rule would hurt the small investor. It was suggested advisors’ fees would need to increase to cover new requirements from the rule such as new disclosures and to help overcome loss of commissions. Some feared this would steer firms toward exclusively working with higher net worth individuals moving forward and potentially feel the need to fire their small clients to keep up revenue. There was also a concern that smaller clients might decide that paying higher fees for advice wasn’t worth it based on the amount of assets they have. In these cases, the small guy truly could lose, and a recent survey shows that advisors agree with this concern. According to a recent InvestmentNews article, “The top concern of advisers is that the rule will make it more expensive to serve clients. About 79% of advisers worry this will be the case.” Another consequence? Some financial planners will increase the minimum investible assets a client must have to do business with them. The article also says that “nearly a quarter of advisers said they are likely to increase the amount of assets prospects must have,” leaving smaller clients (those with less than $500,000 in investible assets) with fewer places to turn because, “they’ll need to focus on higher-net-worth clients and the most valuable relationships.” Australia and the United Kingdom implemented a similar rule and provide a nice case study of potential effects where reports have been both positive and negative. While conflicts of interest are being eliminated and transparency has increased in these countries, some advisors were forced out of business or left the industry on their own accord. Consumers feel the quality of advice has risen, but 69% of advisors said they have “turned away potential clients over the last 12 months,” and 43% said the advice would “not have been economic given the circumstances of those potential clients.” 60

Where will the small guy turn? If you think the answer is RoboAdvisors, especially for younger investors just getting started, robos may not meet their needs. Many robos offer investment management, but don’t actually offer advice with planning issues, which is one of the biggest reasons someone would seek an advisor in the first place. Many of these young investors may be on track to have higher assets in the future, but they still need quality advice before reaching those levels so they have a path to get them there. Although it is still unclear exactly how the DOL rule will affect robos, investors need to When the Department know they are not the only answer of Labor issued their and there are places they can find fiduciary rule, the theme advice to fit their needs. Some firms who traditionally was clear: when advising serve a high net worth market have clients on retirement, developed divisions or subsidiary advisors would legally be companies that provide investment management on a fee-only basis, considered fiduciaries giving investors access to both required to put their reasonable price-point investment clients’ best interservices and an advisor who knows ests before their own them and can help discuss their goals and needs.
