Transform Your Space From the Ordinary to the Extraordinary.

NW Finishing and General Construction specializes in creating bespoke luxury homes and providing high-end remodeling services that combine innovative design, functionality, and timeless elegance. Their offerings include custom home design and build, interior and exterior remodeling, space planning, ADU’s, as well as commercial renovations and remodels. Kirkland Lifestyle caught up with owner, Ivan Turchik, to learn more about his business and inspiration.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
I was born into a family of carpenters, so from a young age, I was inspired by and involved in the construction business. My father owned a small cabinets and doors manufacturing business and I was fortunate to occasionally visit his workshop and even help him with some tasks. This experience opened my eyes and gave me the inspiration to create and build. As I grew older, I always had a strong desire to start my own construction company to help bring clients’ visions and dreams to life. NW Finishing and General Construction was born from a passion to transform spaces into personalized works of art.

WHAT CURRENT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
Some exciting trends include:
Biophilic Design: Incorporating nature into the home through large windows, indoor plants, green walls, and natural materials like wood, stone, plaster and faux finishes. Additionally, seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces with foldable glass walls and lush landscaping.
Smart Homes: Advanced automation for lighting, security, climate control, and entertainment systems. Mixed Materials: Combining textures such as wood, stone, and metal to create striking contrasts and depth.
TELL US ABOUT A FAVORITE PROJECT:
One of our most rewarding projects was a home addition in East Bellevue. The client was eager to have a bigger space for his large family, adding nearly 1,400 square feet to the existing house, including 1,000 square feet over the existing home and an additional 400 square feet downstairs. It involved complex problem solving to mend an old house built in the 70s to a new house and make it look like it was just built. We also upgraded the rest of the home finishes, including new maple hardwood with custom stairs, new maple kitchen cabinets, new granite countertop, as well as new exterior finishes. It involved intricate restoration work paired with contemporary upgrades, creating a seamless blend of old and new. We accomplished our client’s needs, and seeing their joy made the experience unforgettable!
Another favorite project was completed in Kirkland for a client who had a house packed with kids and no place to work at home. We created his dream backyard ADU, roughly 650 square feet with a full mini kitchen, full walk-in shower bathroom, and expansive bedroom. Our client was very pleased of the quality and craftsmanship from all the woodworking involved both exterior and interior.
“When investing in a luxury remodel or building your dream home, start by defining your vision and priorities. Most importantly, make choices that reflect your personality and create a space where you’ll truly love living.”
~ Ivan Turchik, owner NW Finishing and General Construction

+WHAT’S TRENDING IN 2025:
Sustainability and adaptability, including green building materials, energy-efficient designs, and solar integration dominate new constructions & remodels. We are still seeing buyers prioritize flexible spaces, such as home offices and multipurpose rooms, catering to hybrid work lifestyles.
+TIP FOR BUYER:
Get connected & pre-approved with a vetted lender early! With buyer competition back, acting swiftly can be crucial, you will feel more confident making offers if you have discussed your various budget & loan scenarios with your lender prior. We are also encouraging our buyers to do sewer scopes on any SFR built in the 1970’s or earlier, due to a rise in sewer line issue in this age of homes.
+TIP FOR SELLER:
Engage with a realtor early, they will offer a checklist of maintenance items & optional improvements to handle beforehand. This proactive approach can enhance your home’s equity and simplify the selling process, ensuring your property is well-prepared & receives top dollar when you list.
+PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT FROM 2024:
We helped a contingent buyer into contract on their dream home during the holiday season. We quickly prepped, photographed, & listed their current residence in just 3 days, going pending after only 8 days on the market. We simultaneously closed on their home sale & contingent purchase. It was a notable success during a typically quieter Holiday season ferrerateam.com

+WHAT’S
TRENDING IN 2025?
I’m seeing more interest in NW modern and traditional homes with sustainability as a top priority. From custom arched windows and doors, to earthy tones and unexpected patterns, it seems there’s more bold expressions in design. ADUs are becoming very popular, providing extra income for investors and families.
+TIP FOR BUYER:
1. Get pre-approved 2. Get a good agent. 3. Be patient, rates should come down slightly, creating more inventory 4. Search in emerging areas if you’re buying for investment (the next big place is more profitable than the already discovered one) 5. If you find the perfect home now, don’t wait for lower rates. Rates may fall, but not by much.
+TIP FOR SELLER:
1. Find a top agent who specializes in your area, return is always much higher when you work with one. 2. Don’t over-price your property. 3. Make sure your agent invests in luxury marketing (such as photography and staging). 4. Showcase your home in its best light. 5. Virtual tours reach more buyers, make sure to have a nice one. 6. Inventory is going to increase, so don’t wait too long to sell unless you want more competition!
+PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT FROM 2024:
The sales of two beautiful waterfront properties that I had the opportunity to list and sell. The properties sold for $9,135,000 and $6,500,000 and offered over 90’ of lakefront in Kirkland with unbeatable west-facing views.

+WHAT’S TRENDING IN 2025?
For Kirkland we will continue to see higher density housing; ADU’s, cottages, smaller residences in general. These new builds make entry into homeownership more affordable. However, I do not support the intense densification of Kirkland’s residential neighborhoods with 4-6 story buildings whatsoever.
+TIP FOR BUYER:
More inventory will come on earlier in the year than last year, but it will go quick. Don’t bet on expected higher rates this year to slow down home buyers, and be ready to compete against cash offers (ideally sell your home before purchasing). A local broker will open the door to more inventory.
+TIP FOR SELLER:
Leaving no stone unturned in home prep prior to market paid dividends for my selling clients in 2024, and I expect the same in 2025. My team will see to it that our trusted vendor network has everything set for market. We know what will procure a quick profitable sale, and we only recommend improvements when necessary.
+PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT FROM 2024:
We set a record on our ‘Gold Coast’ in Kirkland along the water; a home positioned on 60’ of water frontage sold for $8,300,000 equaling $138,000 a linear waterfront foot! I am proud to expand my team as we wrapped up a project over in Suncadia Resort with sales totaling over $27,000,000. I also celebrated my 20th year serving clients!

+WHAT’S TRENDING IN 2025?
Views, large properties and close proximity to entertainment and amenities. “Third Places” will be the biggest trend in 2025. After five years of WFH and social isolation people are ready to get out of their home and gather in communal spaces like coffee shops, local restaurants, parks, sporting events and more—and we are so lucky to live in an area that provides all this and more. There’s a strong demand to live within walking distance to downtown Kirkland.
+TIP FOR BUYER:
Working with an expert in the area you’re looking in will save you time and money.
+TIP FOR SELLER:
We represent the most homes in Kirkland. Selling your home requires strategy and market insight not every broker can offer. With over 200 five-star reviews online, the most common praise our clients write is “Max knows Kirkland”.
+PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT FROM 2024:
We are proud to say we had another record-breaking year finishing #1 in Washington State and #1 in Kirkland with a total of $289MM in sales and 117 transactions. Thank you to our clients and the Kirkland community for trusting in me and continuing to allow me the opportunity to serve them with the utmost integrity and excellence.

Goodbye stark white everything; it’s time to diversify with color, texture and textiles. Warm colors set an earthy tone. Vintage pieces mix with modern to add depth and character with a focus on sustainability. Tactile touches featuring paneled walls and textured wallpaper – even on the ceiling. Formal dining rooms are back, even in an open concept home. Over-the-top Powder Rooms showcase color, wallpaper and one-ofa-kind vanities and fixtures.
+TIP FOR BUYER:
Stop ‘waiting’ for rates or home prices to go down. Get pre-approved and start looking seriously now. And yes, you do need an experienced Buyer’s Broker to help you navigate the complicated process. Jump in the pool!
+TIP FOR SELLER:
Don’t wait for May because your yard will be in bloom. Get on the market as soon as possible to capitalize on the pent-up Buyer demand from not enough home options. Remember, one strong marketing feature is the correct price.
+PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT FROM 2024:
My favorite 2024 client story was helping buyers who said they were ‘downsizing’. They said they didn’t want Kirkland, nor a condo, and they had a specific geographic area near their daughter. When nothing was available in their parameters, I asked them to trust me: I showed them a condo in Kirkland that I thought fit their wish list in other ways. It was bigger than their current home, but had an elevator...and it was perfect. Sometimes you have to listen to what a client’s not saying.

How One Nonprofit Unrolls the Welcome Mat for Youth Experiencing Homelessness.
On any given day, there are hundreds of youth experiencing homelessness in the Kirkland community. The reasons are myriad: drug or alcohol addiction, physical abuse, human trafficking, or oftentimes persecution of a particular lifestyle or race.
Whether these things are happening to the individuals themselves or to their family members, there are many complex circumstances that can leave a young person feeling hopeless, lost and scared.
Luckily, there is a beacon of light around the local corner—Friends of Youth.
“At Friends of Youth, our dedicated outreach team works directly in the streets and community to engage with clients, focusing on building relationships and trust,” says Moe Nyang, Senior Director of Homeless Youth Services. “They conduct needs assessments and connect clients to our programs and services.”
With more than 180 staff members, including mental health counselors, medical professionals, case managers, and educational and employment specialists, Friends of Youth offers a range of services to young residents facing circumstances of homelessness, foster care and behavioral health challenges.
ARTICLE BY LAUREN HUNSBERGER
Of particular note, over the past few years they revolutionized the whole concept of a youth overnight emergency shelter for those 18 to 24 years old.
In January 2024, the nonprofit organization, which has been operating in King County since 1951, opened the doors to Willows Youth Services Center in Kirkland. With 35 private beds and a bevy of on-site professionals waiting to support, it acts as a home for unsheltered youth to start making a significant transition in their lives, no matter what brought them there.
“We operate a 24/7 shelter and drop-in services at The Willows, offering holistic support that includes case management, meals, hygiene services, and a safe space for young people,” says Nyang. It also provides showers and laundry services, even for those not staying the night.
The local shelter is one of a kind in the area and now serves as a critical resource for those who need it during one of the most delicate parts of life.
Moe Nyang, Senior Director of Homeless Youth Services
“For many youth, their brains are still developing, and it is a crucial time for them to be supported by their community,” says Eileen Schuetz, Director of Philanthropy. “We provide basic resources, like shelter and food, but also create a community for a young person.”
The organization has received an outpouring of support from the community since opening the shelter, through both funding and volunteers, and Nyang says it makes a huge difference. He encourages anyone interested to donate, serve a meal, or simply sit and listen to the kids’ stories and guide them through mentorship.
Director of Philanthropy
He also just wants to spread awareness about the challenging situations these young kids face and to stop some of the stigmas.
“Homelessness is not a choice for them—it is the result of circumstances beyond their control,” he says. “Youth experiencing homelessness are striving every day to achieve stable housing and are actively working toward meaningful goals.”
While the Willows Youth Services Center is their most recent and groundbreaking endeavor, Friends of Youth also operates other shelters and services for younger children experiencing homelessness (between ages 7 and 17) and their families.
They also provide resources so that when the kids leave the shelter they have options for affordable housing and a path forward.
“We offer comprehensive life skills training, equipping them with the tools needed to develop independence and succeed in their journey toward stability,” says Nyang.

INDOOR PLANT GUIDE
Investing in indoor plants can not only spruce up your living space, but also bring numerous health and well-being benefits
Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery, based in Kansas, and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home. “There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.
ANTHURIUM:
Anthurium has gorgeous, colorful flowers and is the easiest indoor flowering plant to care for. It comes in a variety of colors including red, white, orange and purple. Anthurium likes to be dry, so let it go bone dry before watering. Fertilize every so often, especially when blooming. These plants do not like direct sunlight and can be repotted every three to five years.
HOPE PEPEROMIA:
This cascading plant is gaining popularity due to its succulent-like leaves and also because it is fairly easy to care for. The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.
“Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of purifying the air.”
This is a slow-growing variety that is architectural and compact. This plant is a great statement piece and looks great in an entryway or by a chair. There are a lot of varieties and colors of the Dracaena. They are very resilient in low light and are great for an office space with little or no light. They like to stay on the dry side, so they like to be watered when they are about ½ to ¾ of the way dry. When watering, give it a good soak. Pro tip: A moisture meter can be purchased and used to determine how dry your plant is to help determine when it is time to water again.
