Reason # 5 I love Austin! A

APRIL 2016 publisher

Cherice Engel | CEngel@LifestylePubs.com

s the days become warmer and the daylight lasts longer, I find myself rising a bit easier with a spring in my step. We are embarking on my favorite time of year, spring. I find every excuse to be outside so I can relish in the sun, warmer temperatures, birds chirping, flowers blooming and fresh air. In fact, when I am stuck inside you will often find my windows open so I can invite a bit of the outside in. As someone who grew up in a colder state, spring started much later for me. I would impatiently wait and wait and just when I thought spring was finally here, it would snow again! Ugh! Which brings me to... Reason # 5 I love Austin - The outdoors! In Austin we actually get to enjoy the outside during the spring. There are many little 'gems' to explore in the Austin area and the weather will not prevent us from enjoying them; it will actually enhance our experience. Whether you are an explorer or a home-body, this is the time of year to delight in mother nature. My family and I tend to be the home-body type, spending a great deal of time outside relaxing and entertaining in our own backyard. It is our place of Zen. Do you have your place of Zen? It is my hopes you find this issue of Lake Austin Lifestyle to be inspiring to help you create or refine your outdoor space. A few little changes can go along way. This spring whether you daydream and design your future place of Zen, or you create and redefine your existing space, be sure to do the daydreaming and refining outdoors!

Spring Clean Your Skincare Routine MAKING SUBTLE CHANGES TO YOUR SKINCARE REGIMEN WILL PREPARE YOU FOR THE WARM MONTHS AHEAD ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

epending on your skin type, winter months usually call for heavier skin care products (cream cleansers, creams versus

lotions, moisturizing masks), but as the weather warms, it can be helpful to transition into lighter products. Give your skin a break and opt for light products that provide a deep clean and add radiance as well as protection. ADD A CLEANSING MAKEUP REMOVER

Warm weather makes our skin more prone to breakouts, which means we need to take extra care in ensuring our faces are squeaky clean. Adding a step into our routine that removes all makeup before we cleanse (instead of just the makeup on our

eyes) will give us a truly clean experience (bonus if the makeup remover also removes dirt and impurities). Try Merle Norman Cleansing Water Makeup Remover ($20, Merle Norman Studios, MerleNorman.com), which uses Micellar Water to dissolve makeup, dirt and impurities before cleansing. SWITCH TO A GEL CLEANSER

The addition of sun and sweat on your face requires a cleanser that’s able to cut through such warm weather delights without drying out your skin. Often the rich textured ‘winter’ cleansers leave skin well nourished, but aren’t able to remove the environmental effects of warm weather like a gel cleanser can. Try Decleor Aroma Cleanse Fresh Purifying Gel ($27, DecleorUSA.com) to leave the skin clean, hydrated and radiant. CHANGE THE VITAMINS IN YOUR SERUM

Many people reach for a Vitamin A-based serum in the winter – and for good reason. Vitamin A is one of anti-ageing’s most celebrated ingredients. But the catch is that it makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays. During the warmer months, swap out your serum for a Vitamin C-base variety with antioxidants – which will fight signs of premature aging caused by the drying effect of the sun and other environmental damage. Try ASAP Skin Products Super C Serum ($89, SkinStore.com) to boost collagen production, eliminate redness and encourage skin healing. 14

chies. Copenhagen is full of canals and green spaces and is one of Europe's top bicycling cities. And of course, the Danish are known for their design aesthetic which is sought the world over. The world-famous Tivoli Gardens is a fairground, cultural wonderland and historical gem (opened in 1843) all rolled into one, in the heart of Copenhagen. Rundetaarn, or the round tower, is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe, built in 17th century by Christian IV. Relaxing at a canal waterfront cafe, climbing church towers for amazing views of the city, and tracking down the Little Mermaid statue (warning: there will be hordes of people jostling for photo ops) are all great ways to spend the perfect day in Copenhagen. And if you take the train about 45 minutes north of the city you can visit Kronborg Castle at Helsingør — largely made famous because of Shakespeare's setting of Hamlet here. If you want a trippy, out-of-the-ordinary experience head to Freetown Christiana, a green and car-free commune established in 1971 by a group of hippies who squatted in abandoned military barracks and developed their own set of society rules, completely independent of the Danish government. No one owns property here, though it's filled with organic eateries, homemade houses, workshops and music venues. Due to privacy concerns and Pusher Street, where hash is sold openly from stands in spite of the fact that it's illegal in Denmark, visitors are asked not to take photos or film in Christiana.

TIS THE SEA SON

FOR LIVING OUTDOORS Spring is the perfect time to renovate and redefine your outdoor living space ARTICLE ALISHA MCDARRIS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

arm days, comfortable nights, birds on the fence, bats in the trees; it’s springtime

in Texas and the sun and stars are beckoning to Austinites to come outside and enjoy the great beauty of the outdoors. It’s brighter out there, laughter seems to flow freely, friends seem to stay longer, and time with family seems more precious. Indeed there is something magical about breathing in all the freshness a spring evening has to offer, feeling the electricity of friends and family, especially when it’s in a space all your own: your backyard. Best of all, it’s the perfect time of year to make that dream a reality and Mike Lapaglia and Kyle Sorensen of Hill Country Outdoor Living offer up their expertise and service to ensure that dream is a pleasant one. The duo is on a mission to provide homeowners with a stunning space that suits their needs, maximizes their space, and begs to be used on a daily basis. After all, with days of sunshine upon us and temperatures that rarely reach extremes on either side, Texas is one of the few places 22

Lake Austin Lifestyle | April 2016

in the country where residents can take pleasure in outdoor living spaces year round. “This is why our entire team has a passion for the industry. We all start the day excited to work on our customers' projects, knowing how much it means for them to have a space they enjoy 365 days a year,” Lapaglia says. First it’s about function, then it’s about design. When renovating an outdoor living space, the most important factor to consider is what that space will be used for. Do you want to upgrade from a homely backyard bar-b-que to a culinary epicenter? Have a space to escape in the cool of the shade with a good book? Create a place where your family can gather around the fireplace and roast marshmallows? The guys at Hill Country Outdoor Living say it’s imperative to find out what you want out of your space, not what a builder or designer wants to add to their portfolio, and only then start designing something great. For those who still can’t visualize their dream after a free consultation, Hill Country can provide a 3D rendering to give clients full assurance that they’ll love what they’re investing in. Because it is an investment. “Many other states see less than 50% return on investment from outdoor living improvements. Here, we see that number well above 50% and in many cases experiencing positive equity return when compared to your total outdoor living purchase. Outdoor projects here are truly an investment, not only in quality of life, but also in the pocket book. It's a win-win,” says Sorensen. And while any time of year is a good time to redefine an outdoor living space, spring sees flowers blooming, the sun shining, and temperatures rising, and with it all, a compulsion to break out of the stale indoors. Hill Country can help make the space you retreat to exactly that: a retreat. They specialize in stone and masonry work to create patios on which to kick back and relax, outdoor kitchens to concoct wonderful new summer recipes, and fireplaces around which to share a story. Their exceptional carpentry services provide decking on which friends can gather for a drink, cabanas to while away weekend afternoons, and fencing to create a cozy nook for a romantic evening. They’ll even transform your yard into an outdoor retreat with landscaping and hardscaping, creating a magical space you may never want to leave, which is precisely what they set out to do. “Our goal when establishing this company was not only to provide the highest quality of service, but to make customer needs and desires our number one priority,” Sorensen and Lapaglia say. They won’t even ask for final payment until clients are completely and unreservedly satisfied with their new space, be it crafted out of wood, stone, composite, alumawood, or any other material your heart, or your eye, desires. They will go above and beyond to meet expectations. In essence, your outdoor living space isn’t just about building stairs or adding garden trimming, it’s offering peace of mind. Because when it comes to your home, it’s about making the feelings, the intangibles like togetherness, relaxation and joy a reality. April 2016 | Lake Austin Lifestyle

New Tech that's changing the Plastic Surgery Game VECTRA GIVES PEACE OF MIND TO THE PATIENTS OF AN AUSTIN PRACTICE ARTICLE ALISHA MCDARRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

P

eace of mind. It’s a luxury plastic surgery patients don’t often have when considering a breast lift or breast augmentation. There are too many variables, too many possible outcomes that can create doubt and uncertainty about the end result. But thanks to Austin Plastic Surgery Institute and the hottest new technology on the market, that’s about to change. VECTRA and it’s redefining the way potential patients view procedures—literally. Indeed, the days of vague visualizations of post-operative outcomes are practically over thanks to the detail, precision and 3D imaging of the VECTRA System. It starts with a high resolution 3D scan of whatever part of the body a client wishes to alter—breasts, body, face—and provides a wrap around digital image that captures the finest detail. A plastic surgeon can then manipulate and transform the image to fit the client’s desires, creating a fully simulated aesthetic procedure. More than a photo, however, the image can be rotated, measured, split and amended to be viewed from every angle and even state of dress or undress so the client can be more certain than ever that they’ll be thrilled with the end result. A man wanting a rhinoplasty can view his new nose in profile, from above and below. A woman considering a breast augmentation can see what she’ll look like post-op in a bikini, a T-shirt, looking down or from the side. The software even lets patients view pre- and potential post-op images side by side, creating a perfect simulation and making it so much easier to visualize the outcome and manage expectations than more Dr. Scott Haydon traditional simulations. It recognizes the patient as an individual and gives the most accurate picture of what the surgeon can do, taking volume measurements and even symmetry into account. “It gives a lot of peace of mind,” says Scott Haydon, M.D., one of APSI’s board certified co-founding plastic surgeons. It’s a tool he and his fellow surgeons, William Gorman, M.D. and Fred Wilder, M.D., will be utilizing to refine the whole practice and make plastic surgery that much less intimidating for potential clients. That’s saying a lot considering APSI is already known in the plastic surgery world for their work on complicated procedures, namely breast and body contouring, in addition to the full range of services they offer from injectables and chin implants to brow and arm lifts. Simultaneous body contouring procedures like 26

VECTRA Imaging

breast lifts and implants or liposuction and abdominoplasty offer clients the most complete result with one recovery, one anesthetic, and almost always as an outpatient surgery. VECTRA will make it easy for patients to compare these combination procedures with their stand-alone options to determine what will be best for them. “It gives people an idea of expectations,” Haydon says, and fairly accurate ones as the correlation between the images the technology produces and the final result is a good one. Of course, the technology isn’t just for clients wishing to improve upon their image for image’s sake; it will aid in rebuilding the lives of clients who have suffered through skin and breast cancer and are simply looking for reconstruction to feel whole again. “In the end it’s about making people happy,” Haydon says. And if at the end of the day he can help a client walk a little taller, instill a little more confidence, strip away fear, and restore someone’s body, he’s done his job.

GROW & EAT YOUR OWN YARD ARTICLE VAL VALDEZ PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S

o often, gardening books get complicated, formulaic or intimidating with lots of data and complex charts. But in Cheryl Beesley’s new book, “Landscaping with Edible Plants in Texas,”she takes a natural approach, like she's walking you through her garden giving tips. “This book is written about growing edible plants specifically in Texas with maps to determine the region, water availability and types of plants and chill hours for fruit trees,” says Beesley. The concept of combining ornamental with edible plants in landscaping is centuries old, but Beesley’s gardening design motto is think outside the row. “Farmers grow plants in rows, but we don’t have to do that. This book brings plants, like Swiss Chard and Rosemary, into the ornamental landscape for their looks and value as edible plants,” Beesley says. The soft-cover book is divided into three parts featuring plenty of colorful photos and helpful diagrams to captivate and educate novice and experienced gardeners. No stone is left unturned in the book, starting with the first step in design, site evaluation. The next step comes with the garden layout where she explains about design considerations, like style of existing architecture, scale and ideas for urban gardens. The chapter on soil preparation reveals there are 1,200 soil series in Texas, and it's not uncommon for several of them to appear in the same yard. Part II focuses on the design elements and a unique problem with edible gardens, harvesting something Beesley compares to working a 3D puzzle.

“The pieces in your garden are constantly moving, so as you harvest, you need to keep in mind what you’re going to put back in that spot,” Beesley says. This chapter also highlights the Parterre garden at Lake Austin Spa Resort, the children’s garden at the Olive Tree Learning Center, and Beesley’s own walled courtyard garden. The final part is about the huge variety of edibles from fruit trees, like Pecan, apple or pear, and shrubs and perennial to herbs, including fennel, lemon grass and mint, plus vegetables like spinach, carrot and squash among many others. “Austin is like a sweet spot and so many edible plants, can be grown here that can’t be grown all over Texas,” Beesley says. She recommends a Southern cooking approach, although not all plants in the book grow in this area, but sweet potato, corn and greens do well here. Beesley is a longtime designer and gardener with a Master’s Degree in landscape architecture and has more than 20 years experience in landscape design. Her Austin firm, Adelante Landscape, produces sustainable gardens incorporating a variety of edible and perennial plants in a holistic and environmentally sensitive design process for all garden sizes and types. A garden can be as simple as a few containers with herbs on a patio or an elaborate design that takes up most of a yard. However one chooses to garden, Beesley wants people to thrive with their endeavor, and her book is the first seed of knowledge on how to plant a successful, edible garden in Texas.

The book is filled with helpful and easy to understand design layouts. Cheryl Beesley, Austin landscape designer and author.

LIGHT & BRIGHT SPRING DESIGN IDEAS

ARTICLE VAL VALDEZ | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S

pring design ideas for the home are about simple, easy changes that shake off winter’s chill and adds instant cheer. But ‘springing

up’ your home's interior takes experience and an eye for design on what to do and not do. Austin interior designer Michelle Thomas has both the experience and the designer’s eye that comes together in her concept of keeping it bright and light for spring. “A good tip is to change the light bulbs from fluorescent to LED, and add some color with a lamp or lampshade,” says Thomas. “A white lampshade can transform your whole room interjecting airiness.” Refreshing for spring can be as simple as rearranging the living room furniture making it feel like a new space. Updating the pillows in lighter weight fabrics, like cotton and linen, with floral patterns or stripes, and in coral and blue, or teal and lime green makes the area lighter. Thomas advises using light-weight drapery, plus switching to a roller shade of woven fabric that allows light in but reduces glare. Although most her clients are hesitant about wallpaper, she says it is a big trend right now to add color on an accent wall or in small areas, but styles today are nothing like your grandmother’s old-fashioned look. “Wallpaper can be in the form of grass cloth with a nice woven texture or in a bold pattern, and a good wallpaper can last 10 to 15 years” Thomas says. Nothing drastically changes the vibe of a bedroom from winter to spring like a new set of bedding and that’s where Thomas mixes up the colors and patterns to make everything pop. “I love a coverlet in a solid color with diamond pattern stitching and then put a duvet at the end of the bed in a big geometric pattern or stripe. Toss in Euro pillows, shams and an accent pillow and it's an easy way to update your bedding,” Thomas says. All of Thomas’ design ideas are tailored to best suit each client’s taste, wants and needs for their home in her collaboration-design process. “I listen to them and try to build their home based on their vision, but I try to make it better than they ever thought. Michelle Thomas, 33, grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and after

completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design at the University of Alabama, she moved to Colorado. But like many people that come here for a visit, Michelle decided to stay, so she relocated in 2006 working for several design firms before starting her firm in 2012. Thomas has earned three ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Awards in the Rising Star Category. She is active in the local design community, chairing the Austin ASID Design Community in 2012-2013 and Design

more risks, where people in other states favor a traditional style. “People here are gravitating towards the cutting edge, contemporary style, and they’re not afraid of color, which is so much fun.” But one thing she cautions about is the design overload thanks to programs on HGTV that often gives people too many ideas at once. She tries to teach a client to have a focal point and make it special, whether it’s a back splash or a counter top. She works from a minimal, less is more approach. “You don’t want to put five ideas all in one room, so take your focal point and build the room around it. I try to keep my base simple and timeless and then add something jazzy,” says Thomas.

Linen or cotton drapery and pillows in blues and white can spruce up a living room for spring.

in this Texas heat with water restrictions to actually grow a plant, let alone an entire yard? Even in the hottest of months, there are still flowers blooming. It must be the best of the best landscapers and gardeners who can grow the plants, right? Wrong! Well, of course they can, they're professionals, or they were born with green thumbs! However, anyone can have a beautifully landscaped yard. At least that is the assumption I am going on as we prepare to change things up. Having lived in our home for some time now, my husband and I are ready to refine our landscaping. Let's be honest, what a builder supplies you with as a lawn is pretty basic, so it is time to give our yard a face-lift. We are not look-

So as someone who can be deemed as a do-it-herself kinda gal, I dove right into the world of landscaping plants in Texas. After visiting many nurseries, talking to experts and utilizing the "Grow Green: Native and Adapted Landscape Plants" guide for central Texas, I have come up with a list of plants for my yard that thrive in Austin.

THE AUSTIN DIAMOND ROOM IS WEIRD, Because like Austin, there’s just nothing else around like it!

1. We say NO to “retail shopping” for jewelry. I sell one diamond at a time to one customer at a time here in Room 215. No crowds. No rush. Just amazing jewelry, and time. And beverages.

2. We reject retail store diamonds. Unfortunately, diamonds are sold by weight, not by beauty. But I hand-select only diamonds that are properly proportioned and cut, for maximum sparkling beauty.

3. My lower overhead = your bigger diamond. It’s one of the huge benefits of owning a Diamond ROOM rather than a diamond retail store.

Just contact me, Matt O’Desky, to see diamonds as they should be. I’ve written my secret contact info here (no secret password needed). Just set an appointment and PREPARE for the most fun and unique jewelry experience in Austin!
