The heartbeat of the community.

T
he entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in our community. You can feel it! Like the beat of a pulse, it’s the heartbeat of the city. Each and every day, entrepreneurs wake up with this pulse inside them. It’s the beat of belief, passion, dreams, vision, drive and determination. Being an entrepreneur requires a great deal of dedication and backbone. It is not for the feint of heart. Entrepreneurs are unique in the understanding that no does not always mean no. They know determination and belief will drive their dreams to reality. Entrepreneurs just can’t, and won't, give up. In fact, this very magazine began in Austin from our own entrepreneur and publisher, Cherice Engel.

As I set out to bring you this homegrown themed issue, I quickly realized what a monumental task I was up against to chose just a few businesses to feature. Everywhere you go, everywhere you look, you will find a homegrown Austin business. They are popping up every single day, while others have been entrenched in our community for years. From local restaurants, doctor offices, fashion and design, to tech companies galore, Austin is filled with dreams becoming reality. I have no doubt you probably know an entrepreneur or two, if you are not one yourself!
chief financial officer | DeLand Shore director of marketing | Brad Broockerd art director | Sara Minor ad coordinators | Cyndi Vreeland, Chelsi Hornbaker layout designer | Nicole Sylvester copy editor | Kendra Mathewson executive assistant | Lori Cunningham
With community inspiration in mind, I have chosen to focus on some of the amazing businesses in our area. To say that I’ve just scraped the tip of the iceberg is an understatement. I could fill several issues with homegrown businesses.
application architect | Michael O’Connell web developer | Hanna Park it director | Randy Aufderheide
For now, it is my hopes I have included businesses you will not only learn a great deal about, but also enjoy and support. After all, it takes a village to grow a dream to reality. Can you feel the entrepreneurial pulse of our community? It’s there; it is all around you.

STUDENTS' EXPERIMENT LAUNCHES INTO SPACE The experiment designed by four rising Westlake High School freshmen launched
on a rocket in June from Cape Canaveral, Florida to the International Space Station (ISS). As part of a national science, technology, engineering and mathematics program, the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) selected the former West Ridge Middle School 8th graders’ project after more than 400 Eanes ISD middle school students submitted 126 proposals. William Buchanan, Steven Foncerrada, Myles Kovalik, and Kyle Shaw's experiment traveled to the ISS, where astronauts are conducting studies to answer the boys’ question: Will Heterotrophic Algae Neochloris oleoabundans grow in microgravity? The students, who were advised by teachers Todd White and Dillon Finan, as well as local microbiologists, are simultaneously conducting identical experiments at school and on the ISS to determine the affect microgravity has on algae growth and lipid production. The ferry vehicle returning to Earth with experiment data is expected to land off the California coast sometime this month.

Simple Pure Nutrition THE PROTEIN BAR THAT BECAME A REBEL WHILE REFUSING TO CONFORM TO THE NORM ARTICLE ALISSA PALLAN | PHOTOGRAPHY ALEX MARIN PHOTOGRAPHY
I
nspired by health, nutrition and love, Outlaw protein bars were born. Registered and licensed dietitian nutritionist (RDN) Laura Chavez, with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nutrition, found herself up to her neck in creating protein bars. Her son Alex, as a Westlake High School football player, was constantly eating them. In order to fill him with wholesome, pure nutrition, Chavez began making Alex protein bars at home. It was important to Chavez to eliminate the chemicals, additives and preservatives Alex was consuming from the standard bars. She focused on great taste and clean nutrition, and before long had family and friends requesting her creations. The power-packed bars spawned a new company, Outlaw Protein and Energy Fuel. Even though Chavez believes in her bars and the need for her product to be on the market, starting a business is filled with uncertainty. There are great many steps to take; from concept, to product, to actually having a business that is running and producing that product. “It is impossible to take on the financial, social and personal burdens without fully believing in your product. I slept much better before I started my business. It’s so much harder than I thought, but the rewards make it worth it,” says Chavez. When Outlaw began, Chavez chose to keep her business locally focused. They are proud to have the bars made right here in Austin by Austinites. In the beginning they produced the bars in a small commercial kitchen, working just once a week. As they grew, the need for a manufacturing facility became apparent. Outlaw’s manu-

facturing facility is actually owned by another Westlake family. They took a chance with Outlaw, even though there was no financial history, and granted them a lease. “There is a great spirit of community and an appreciation for entrepreneurship in Westlake. We love how Westlake families are always telling everyone they know, both near and far, to try our bars. We also love hiring folks from our community. Outlaw has plenty of Westlake people involved in many facets of our business. I really believe much of the company’s success comes from the hard working young men that help make these bars. Most of them are Westlake graduates. Every day I am thankful for each and every one of them,” says Chavez. As a wife, mother of two and business owner, balancing all aspects of daily life can be difficult. Before Alex went to college, it was important to Chavez to be able to continue her mothering role. She did not want to sacrifice packing lunches, attending his football games, having family dinners, and simply being available for him. “I’m totally obsessed with healthy eating and I love to cook, so I was always squeezing in healthy dinners and packing lunches. It was important to keep our family dinners for many reasons, especially to stay connected and bonded,” says Chavez. “It has been tough to find a balance. In fact, sometimes life is simply out of balance and in those moments, you wonder if the business is worth the effort.” Adjusting as a family, with everyone taking on new roles and responsibilities, was the key to finding some balance.
“Starting a business impacts everyone. My husband has had to learn to clean a little more often and the whole family had to realize that clean clothes don’t magically appear in the closet. My husband spends weekends helping me with things I know nothing about like managing our website, the financials, and troubleshooting our kitchen equipment. Our daughter spent a lot of time working for me before she got married and I still don’t think there is anyone that can make a box faster than her. Everyone in the family tries to help out and we all love the bars,” says Chavez. Outlaw is focused on providing healthy nutrition that tastes great. The bars are always made in small batches using high quality ingredients. Outlaw uses local products whenever it can. “We take pride in showing people that food can taste good and still be good for you,” says Chavez. Outlaw also strives to educate the public that despite its small size, their bars are satisfying. “We live in a world where the belief is more is better or super size means super value. Unfortunately, our waistlines are proving that this thinking not only leads to obesity but also comorbid conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, just to name a few. We also love that many people use our bars therapeutically when they cannot tolerate other foods due to certain conditions they might have,” says Chavez.
“I enjoy watching the expression on someone’s face when they first try a bar. Most people think that protein bars are bland or taste like cardboard. It is gratifying to watch a smile appear on their face after their first bite. I always love the descriptions they have at the surprise of the great taste,” says Chavez. Outlaw protein bars are a healthy, delicious snack or meal substitute that can be used by both athletes and non-athletes alike. These bars are packed with 10 grams of protein and healthy fats, are low in carbohydrates, Paleo friendly and gluten free. Bars are available in three flavors, Apricot Cashew, Coconut Pecan, and Cacao Nib and Almond. “I enjoy watching the expression on someone’s face when they first try a bar. Most people think that protein bars are bland or taste like cardboard. It is gratifying to watch a smile appear on their face after their first bite. I always love the descriptions they have at the surprise of the great taste,” says Chavez. Outlaw bars can be found at Westlake Crossfit, Wheatsville Co-op, People’s Pharmacy, the Food For Fitness Café, many gyms and studios across Austin, H-E-B, and online at OutlawProtein.com or Amazon. “It has been hard work but it is paying off. We want people to know that when they bite into a bar, it is made with love and we believe it is the best bar on the market. It is just pure and simple delicious nutrition,” says Chavez. Having a business in the Austin community sets up entrepreneurs for success ARTICLE ALISSA PALLAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A
ustin has a reputation for being a great place to start a business. Between the University of Texas (UT) supplying a steady growth of young educated professionals entering the work force, the government support for tech companies, and the relatively low cost of living a high quality of life, Austin seems to have it all. There is truly no better place to start a business or be a business owner. Many of the businesses you encounter every day have their roots in Austin and their degrees from UT.

SNAP KITCHEN Founded on Earth Day in 2010 by UT alumni Martin Berson, Snap Kitchen was born. Berson has always had a passion for food and been a part of the culinary scene. As a type 1 diabetic, his wife found it difficult to enjoy a meal out that not only tasted gourmet-good but was also healthy. Thus, Snap Kitchen was created, a convenience concept redefining the fast food movement. “One of our most unique aspects is what I call our Foodie-Duo; Executive Chef Matthew Reinhart and Registered Dietitian Andrea Hinsdale,” says Elaine Krackau, public relations specialist. Chef Matt and Andrea have been collaborating on creating dishes for the past five years. Chef Matt develops innovative, seasonal gourmet dishes and Andrea analyzes them to make sure they stand up to Snap Kitchen’s nutritional standards. “They go back and forth on each menu item several times until it not only rivals a dish from a 5-star restaurant, but it’s healthy as well. All of Snap Kitchen’s dishes are chef-driven and dietitian-blessed in this way,” says Krackau. Snap Kitchen is dedicated to bringing customers flavorful, handcrafted food that supports a commitment to local, organic ingredients and healthy cooking. The menu offers a selection of palate pleasing items made fresh daily, including Chicken & Green Chile Enchiladas, Grassfed Bison Quinoa Hash, or the Peanut Butter Pancakes. Ninety-nine percent of the menu is gluten free, and there is a vast selection of vegetarian, vegan, paleo, dairy free, carb conscious and sodium sensitive items. Snap Kitchen was recognized by Nation’s Restaurant News (February 2014) as one of the nation’s top Breakout Brands and selected as one of Nation’s Restaurant News 2014 Hot Concepts award recipients. Snap Kitchen is located in Austin, Dallas, Houston and, branching out of Texas for the first time, Chicago. SnapKitchen.com CONTINUED >

TIFF’S TREATS
Tiff and Leon
Tiffwich®, ice cream sandwiched between two of Tiff's Chocolate Chip Cookies Tiff's Treat's delivered for your next big event
In January of 1999, the first warm cookie delivery concept of the nation was born. Tiff’s Treats began in a college apartment by two UT sophomores, Tiffany and Leon, with nothing more than an oven, $20 dollars and a cell phone. Operating only at night to college students at UT, Tiff’s Treats quickly grew in popularity. The concept was simple, warm cookies delivered. The best part, you can deliver to yourself or send cookies, milk and other treats to anyone as a gift. You order online at CookieDelivery.com for same-day or future delivery, and the cookies arrive warm and fresh at the time you choose! When it was time to expand, investors told Tiff and Leon they had to prove the business by opening a location in a market outside of Austin. Downtown Dallas opened in 2006 and became the second location. Today, Tiff’s Treats has 18 locations across Texas – Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Ft. Worth and Houston. However, Tiff and Leon often say they do not think they would have made it this far had they started somewhere other than Austin. “Tiff and Leon fell in love with Austin, as so many University of Texas students do, and they knew they wanted to stay here and run their business. There’s no place in the world with the culture and business support like Austin; the Capitol, University, downtown business sector, and healthcare systems are all top places for delivery for us. As well as the many students who become four year, and eventually, lifetime customers in our other markets,” says Jeff Sartor, marketing for Tiff’s Treats. Recently, Tiff’s Treats raised money to open an additional eight stores in 2016. “We are adapting and growing internally to prepare for this growth, and we couldn’t be more excited to take Tiff’s Treats to another state,” says Sartor. “We are opening another Austin location later this year.” To get your very own baked-to-order cookies and brownies straight from the oven, go online to CookieDelivery.com
HEMLETS
Christine and Jordana Kutnick
HemLets Cuffs accessorizing the basic legging
Inspired by her favorite television show, SharkTank, Jordana Kutnick sought to create her own business. Like most teens, when Jordana was 13 years old she enjoyed spending her time shopping. Her mother, Christine Kutnick, always looked forward to activities with her daughter, but it was difficult to support Jordana’s spending habit. “I can start my own business and make my own money,” Jordana told her mom. “Of course you can!” Christine replied. At that moment, the beginning of HemLets was formed. HemLets is teen-founded and mother run. Jordana created the product and serves as their inspiration. Her title is chief creative officer, while Christine serves as her chief everything officer. “After many different crazy ideas, the idea of doing something for the basic legging was discussed. Jordana always had firm ideas that the product must fit most people and she wanted to keep it in the $10 price point range,” says Christine. HemLets are fashion cuffs for leggings. The cuffs can be worn with any ankle-length legging making it simple to spruce up and accessorize the standard legging. HemLets come in a variety of colors, and patterns; you can even get yours monogrammed. “Because we are a one-size fits most product, females of all ages wear HemLets. Our biggest demographics are yogis and tweens. Moms who carpool in their leggings all day also enjoy adding some flair to their outfits with our product, “ Christine says. As many entrepreneurs express, running a company can cause some family-work balance issues. It is difficult to meet the demands of a business and the needs of a family simultaneously. “We are pulled in so many ways,” says Christine. “Keeping HemLets as a first priority can be difficult.” Jordana is a sophomore at Westlake High School and is very active in her rowing crew. She rows many days a week on Lady Bird Lake. “Over the past year, we have had to learn what everyone’s role is in the company and what they can handle. Because Jordana is busy being a teen, we learned she cannot do everything for the business. As a mother, I like it because it gives us a project to work on together,” says Christine. “I want to show Jordana that you can come up with an idea and turn it into a reality if you don’t give up. She is my inspiration everyday.” HemLets is in 12 stores nationwide but you can get the cuffs at the Atown store, Chaps store-at Westlake High School and PerriBerry stores in Austin. You can also find the HemLets in their Etsy store and HemLets.com. When chatting with Snap Kitchen, Tiff’s Treats and HemLets, they all agreed that starting their business in Austin attributes greatly to their success. Austinites seem to go out of their way to support local businesses and people. The community knows we must stick together. August 2015 | Lake Austin Lifestyle

Security State Bank & Trust is Banking on Texas NEWEST BRANCH OPENS IN BEE CAVE ARTICLE ANN TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY CHERICE ENGEL

ost Texans remember the late 1980s as a time of financial turmoil in the banking industry. From 1987 to 1990 seven of Texas’ 10 largest commercial banks failed. Yet the late 1980s was one of growth for Security State Bank & Trust, an independent small town bank founded in 1941 in Fredericksburg. Banking on the old adage “when the going gets tough, the tough get going,” Security State Bank & Trust’s forward-thinking board was successful in acquiring its first branch in Kerrville in 1988. As banks continued to close their doors, the bank's board was able to acquire or build other branches every year through 1992 eventually growing to five branches in the Texas Hill Country. Today, Security State Bank & Trust has 14 branches in small towns throughout the

Texas Hill Country, including its newest one at 11610 Bee Cave Rd. in Bee Cave, which has been open nearly a year. “Our philosophy is to offer great customer service,” says Joe David Sherrod, senior vice president and branch manager for both the Bee Cave and Spicewood branches. “We know our customers as people. We know their situation and where they live. Our customers are people who want a personalized experience.” A native Texan from Llano, Sherrod began working at a bank part-time while in college. Upon graduating from San Angelo State University, he continued in the field amassing more than 30 years experience, including 25 years with Security State Bank & Trust. “Our staff greets people by name and we strive to know all our customers,” says Sherrod. “People prefer small town banks because
they know who they are dealing with and they can find help when they have a problem. Word-of-mouth is our best advertising.” Sherrod says he enjoys the variety that comes with being part of a large independent bank with $800 million in assets. “I might be working on a vehicle loan in the morning and then a multi-million dollar construction deal in the afternoon.” Sherrod works hand-in-hand with Rudy Cisneros, a vice president at Security State Bank, who specializes in commercial and mortgage lending. Also assisting customers at the Bee Cave branch is Maria Sturdivant, who serves as the bank's administrative officer. Sherrod stresses that along with personalized services the bank offers everything larger banks do including personal and business accounts, debit cards,
online banking, loans of all types, certificates of deposit, individual retirement accounts, checking and savings accounts and safe deposit boxes. The 14 branch offices are located in Bee Cave, Blanco, Boerne, Bulverde, Canyon Lake, Comfort, Dripping Springs, Harper, Ingram, Kerrville, Kingsland, Lago Vista, Marble Falls, and Spicewood. The bank’s logo – a white-tailed deer – epitomizes the bank’s humble beginnings when Security State Bank opened for business on April 12, 1941 at 201 West Main Street in Fredericksburg, the site of the former Buckhorn Saloon. In 1962, the bank added trust services and underwent a name change to Security State Bank & Trust. Each Thursday, the bank’s Board of Directors gathers together to look at new loan requests from all of the bank’s markets. There are very familiar faces at the table as the bank’s board members have been the same for the last 20 years. Security State Bank & Trust is well positioned for future growth in the Texas Hill Country with solid financial performance, independence, stability and customer service excellence. In the words of James Kemp, the chairman of Security State Bank & Trust, “We are proud to say that we are small enough to know you by name and large enough to serve your banking needs.”

SAGE HILL INN
ABOVE ONION CREEK HILL COUNTRY GETAWAY IS CLOSE-IN YET FEELS WORLDS AWAY ARTICLE SHELLEY SEALE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
he beautiful thing about small boutique inns near a big city is that they make the perfect overnight or weekend getaway. You don’t have to go very far to feel truly away from your daily life and immersed in a whole new world. Such is definitely the case with Sage Hill Inn Above Onion Creek. This perfectly situated bed-and-breakfast is only a 20-minute drive south from Austin, yet once you’ve arrived it feels much further. The Inn sits atop a hill on 88 acres above Onion Creek, with sweeping views of the Hill Country to the West. Inhale the clear country air. The wide-open spaces. The walking trails and wildlife. The views.
SAGE HILL INN HAS SO MANY THINGS GOING FOR IT: 1. A STUNNING SETTING
It hardly gets much better than this. Once you turn off the main road, you meander for a while up the country lane until you finally reach the inn...a beautiful little country drive that lets your mind settle into its new mode of relaxation and removal from civilization. The landscape is very pretty, the skies and sunsets to die for, and the grounds themselves are delightful. I couldn't stop myself from wandering through the gardens that beckoned, before I even checked in or saw my room. The main house and common areas are nice too - every amenity and comfort is thought of, yet it has a more upscale than down-home feel. The dining room feels like attending a dinner party at a friend's house; and the library across the breezeway is eclectic, with retro chandeliers and interesting artifacts everywhere. 2. GORGEOUS ROOMS WITH EVERY DETAIL
The inn consists of main buildings with 15 individual rooms and several luxury suites, as well as four private cottages set back a bit from the other buildings. Like the rest of the place, guest rooms are chic and stylish, without traces of the traditional "country inn" kitsch. Yet your every need seems to have been predicted. Luxurious, sink-into-them beds; deep soaking tubs lined with candles, artisan bath salts and lotions; hiking and birding guides along with accoutrements of walking stick, binoculars and sun hat; cozy fireplaces, stocked drinks, homemade cookies, relaxing balconies, hammocks, DVDs, books and games, and more. 3. DELECTABLE DINING
Tables of varying sizes fill the dining room, so guests can either enjoy a more intimate breakfast or dinner, or socialize with others. I was there by myself, for some personal rejuvenation and was looking forward to solitude; still, it was nice to sit down to dinner with two lovely, interesting couples and have engaging conversations and 24

laugh together, over Sage Hill Inn's delicious three-course meal and our own bottles of wine that we brought. Which brings me to... 4. NEARBY WINERIES & ACTIVITIES
Sage Hill Inn is one of those places where you can do as much or as little as you like. If your goal is to completely unplug and destress, then maybe all you want to do is stay at the inn, hike the grounds, relax at the spa or pool, read in a hammock while butterflies flit around nearby flowers, or enjoy a glass of wine at the fire pit as you watch the sun set. But there's also plenty to do; this "country inn" is close to Wimberley, a delightful town full of art galleries and wineries. Taking a day drive to town, gallery hopping and a couple of vineyard tastings is a fun way to spend the day - and you can bring back a bottle or two of your favorite wine to accompany your dinner. The inn staff can also recommend/arrange other activities such as golf, fishing, helicopter tours, horseback riding, skydiving and more. 5. TOP NOTCH SERVICE

The people here are great; friendly and extremely service-oriented, yet also low-key and unobtrusive. From check-in to a chat about your day, the staff is knowledgeable and genuinely interested in the quality of experience that their guests have. The spa staff is exceptional, and I would urge any guest to take advantage of the wonderful treatments offered in the small on-site spa with a very relaxing atmosphere, situated in the middle of the garden. The inn has one of the largest grounds of any Texas hotel, resort or bed and breakfast. There are miles of hiking and biking trails to explore, including the “overlook atop an 80-foot cliff with endless stunning views. The recently renovated 250 yardlong pool and spa provide other great spots to relax and take in the beauty of the Hill Country. The large outdoor fire pit is perfect for relaxing under the stars. You may never want to leave.

FINANCING A DIVORCE
UNIQUE BUSINESS AIDS CLIENTS IN GETTING THEIR SHARE
ARTICLE ANN TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF PAM FRIEDMAN, DIVORCE PLANNING OF AUSTIN
T
alking about money is a very hard conversation for most couples. Yet imagine how hard this topic becomes when a couple decides to divorce. “Most people think divorce is a legal issue, but it’s also a financial issue,” says Pam Friedman, a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst™ with Divorce Planning of Austin. “Your knee jerk reaction is to call an attorney because you’re angry.” Friedman suggests that first meeting with a financial planner will provide those seeking a divorce a solid picture of what they need, what they have and what their budget is post-divorce. A former Wall Street banker and university investments professor, she has more than 20 years of financial planning and investment experience. Friedman says she provides her clients with a mini-course in finance, helps them understand all the pros and cons of potential financial decisions and helps them come up with a strategy so they can have a confident financial future. “Most women often don’t have the financial education they really need,” she says. “Men on the other hand just want to get the divorce finished.” In her consultations with women, as well as men, she explains financing options so that they are open to all the possibilities. This may mean meetings with a mortgage broker to consider selling the family home, a tax adviser to discuss capital gains and even meeting with a therapist to discuss their feelings and the best way to discuss money with a former spouse. “I help quantify and justify the financial support that is needed,” says Friedman. “I can save clients more than they pay me for a consultation as they avoid unnecessary attorney and court fees.” Many people contact Friedman when their divorce case stalls or they are having trouble understanding the numbers the attorney is presenting to them for the settlement. However, she says the best case scenario is working hand-in-hand with her client and their divorce attorney. Friedman continues to work with clients post-divorce as she says often they think the work is done. She advises her clients that time is the enemy and can cost real money. “You need to take responsibility for getting your share of the settlement. Get up and get moving!” says Friedman. “People magically think their spouse or attorney will send them their share. Attorneys don’t do this and your former spouse probably won’t either.”
26
Lake Austin Lifestyle | August 2015
She works with her clients to ensure they don’t miss deadlines that could cost them thousands of dollars. Friedman helps clients review their settlement agreement, set up new accounts, transfer monetary assets and property and list new beneficiaries. “Procrastination is your enemy,” says Friedman. “By waiting you stand to lose money.” Interestingly enough, Friedman has not been through a divorce. Marrying just last year, she and her husband did discuss finances and put together a pre-nuptial agreement prior to their marriage. “Any transition, such as a marriage, divorce, birth of a child, college or retirement is a great time to see a financial expert,” says Friedman. “I even have some clients who just feel their finances are disorganized and want to get a handle on it.” Her initial consultation is complimentary so clients can get an idea whether her services will be of help. If a client decides to hire her the minimum commitment is a six-month period. Often a full financial plan can be done in this time period; however, other plans may take up to a year. In addition to financial planning, Friedman is a partner and offers advisory services, at Silicon Hills Wealth Management, a registered independent adviser. And she is working with River Grove Books to publish a book about the intersection of money and relationships in the fall titled Money, Marriage and
Divorce. Books will be available on Amazon or through her website at DivorcePlanningOfAustin.com.

Collect, Share and Collaborate REALSAVVY MAKES THE HOME BUYING EXPERIENCE SOCIAL ARTICLE ALISSA PALLAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
F
inding a new home is an exciting time in a homebuyer’s life. It can also be a stressful, exhausting undertaking. There are many factors impacting the home buying experience including your realtor, showings, and online viewing availability and accuracy. Living in Austin, where homes can sell within a few hours of being listed, it is difficult for both realtors and real estate websites to keep up in real-time and maintain accuracy. That is, until RealSavvy was created. Co-founded by Clay Knight, Rick Orr and Matt Swezey, RealSavvy was started late 2014. “The initial idea for a more collaborative way to find a home came from watching my wife, Katy, spend copious hours browsing homes online for inspiration with no easy way to organize and share what she’d found with me. I even recall her texting me photos of online listings on her computer screen,” says Orr. As a tech entrepreneur by trade and having been a realtor in Austin since 1998, Orr decided it was time for a better way to find homes and stay connected with an agent. “Sites like Pinterest have validated the concept of wanting to organize the Internet but when it comes to collecting and collaborating on real, accurate property
listings, the technology was missing,” says Orr. “RealSavvy fills that gap by putting agents and clients on the same search platform with real-time communication and shareable Home Boards." Orr began researching the other online search portals a couple of years before starting RealSavvy. He found the big, national portals had strikingly poor data and no basic customer relationship management (CRM) tools for agents to remain connected with their clients before, during and after a home purchase. These search portals focus on getting as many agents as possible in front of homebuyers. “We were able to build our first pilot in just a few months once we figured out that what agents really want is an accurate search platform for their clients where they won't be solicited by dozens of other agents,” says Orr. The perfect tool for both homebuyers and realtors is now alive in Austin. According to Orr, “RealSavvy is a collaborative home search platform that allows agents and homebuyers to organize and share their home search with family, friends and agent.

Home listings in real-time at your fingertips
"We make finding a home, for the first time, social," says Orr. "Our mobile iOS app lets users search for properties for sale nearby, while making it easy to share listings with their agent or family via SMS or custom-curated Home Boards. For agents, RealSavvy offers a free, lightweight CRM tool to easily manage past, current, and prospective clients from one dashboard with real-time collaboration and analytics.” RealSavvy is committed to providing Austinites access to the most accurate listing information. They have joined the Austin Board of Realtors (ABoR) in an effort to protect data integrity and improve the quality of listings in the Austin area market by licensing their data platform. By connecting with an active ABoR Realtor® on RealSavvy, homebuyers can search and pin from the complete data set of listings that are for sale on the Austin MLS, which is updated every 10 minutes. In markets like Austin, where homes often go under contract within a few hours of being listed, accurate data is key for active homebuyers. “When you fall in love with stale listings online, it can be very frustrating for you as well as your agent. Here in Austin, we are able to ensure that users have the most up-to-date listing information wherever they venture online,” says Orr. Moving to Austin in 1995 to attend the University of Texas, Orr became a true Austinite and entrepreneur who couldn't imagine his life or career anywhere else. “When I founded TabbedOut in 2009, I was amazed by the unsolicited outreach from the entrepreneurial community who where willing to help me get the company off the
ground. TabbedOut has benefited greatly from the hyper-local nature of Austin, particularly in the hospitality world, which of course, remains the company's focus for mobile payments. With RealSavvy, we have been incredibly fortunate to have some of the top entrepreneurs as investors and advisors along with Capital Factory to support our initial growth. While most of us seek investors from across the US, the Austin tech community truly takes care of its own and, indeed, we've benefited from this over the past few months,” Orr says. Once RealSavvy validates its model in Austin, they plan to expand to more markets. “Today, we are replacing inaccurate online search portals for homebuyers and antiquated client management tools for agents by putting everyone on a more social home search platform,” says Orr. As for the platform itself, “We have some really exciting products coming out later this year that we believe will delight homebuyers and agents alike. For now though, we would love for people to sign up and connect with their agent. While we will introduce premium, paid features for agents over time, today it's completely free for agents to sign up and, of course, will always be free for homebuyers looking for a more social way to search for their dream home.” Orr lives in Bouldin Creek with his wife, Katy, a long-time teacher, and the director of admissions at the International School of Texas, in Lakeway. “I am blessed to have a wife who supports my passion for startups and this, at times, insane way of life.” You can find out more and experience RealSavvy by visiting RealSavvy.com.

HOME GROWN IN AUSTIN ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY SHELLEY SEALE
I
t's one of my favorite things to do on the weekends. Walk or ride my bike to HOPE Farmers Market on the east side, or sometimes drive to check out other Austin area markets. I love the vibrant, happy atmosphere. Of course there are the food stands — produce and meats, eggs and cheese, homemade prepared foods like Indian paratha and a variety of flavored hummus; but there's also hand-crafted jewelry, soaps, clothing, candles, woodwork, art, fair trade international goods, and much more. What I notice the most are the people; live musicians playing while people spread out on blankets with their kids or dogs; neighbors meeting up with each other, children creating small mas-
34
terpieces at the craft station, people getting lunch at the stands or food trucks. I usually hear three or four different languages during the day. Being at the farmers market is one of the ways in which I most feel a part of the patchwork of my community. So do the vendors who make up Austin's markets. "I play music at eye level for people who buy and sell stuff that this ground we stand on helped produce," says Adam Kobetich of The Kobros, a bluegrass band made up of Adam and his brother Darrin. The guy that Adam buys his bread from makes it in his house, so while Adam is at home practicing his banjo, the bread-maker is at home baking his bread. "How cool is that? Farmers Market, that's free trade." Adam says that playing music at the markets is rewarding because he feels like he's contributing to the community in the same way. "You are dealing with local people, people that share the soil you stand on and maybe swim the same river and creeks — as opposed from a store that shipped its product that was picked six months ago, from 2,000 miles away." For Matt Macioge, SFC Farmers Market operations manager, being involved in the local food community has helped him as a parent. "It has taught me life is resilient and bright, but requires tenderness, a nurturing environment, and respect to flourish. Parenting is no different. It has also taught me that community matters a lot. Our environment will provide the food we need, and likewise our community will provide additional support for parenting." Because the local food movement is a small, close community that often relies on each other, Macioge feels that his son Sammy will have the support and love of the entire community to teach and guide him as he grows. Apparently it does not take a village, but rather a farmer’s market. Good food leads to good health and more time to share the things we love with each other. "Always know that there is a bigger community out there willing to help," Macioge says. And finally, help others. Be as kind as you can to those around you." It's these people — my neighbors, my Austin, my community — that help make me feel part of the human thread.
