Baby, it's hot outside...

JULY 2015

It embodies summer. It is the month for holidays, vacaJuly. tions, neighbors, backyard barbeque's, late nights; it's truly a time to chill out. As a mother of four, I relish this month. Our days are filled with fun, friends, parks, playing, the outdoors... we can stay out a bit later in the evening enjoying the beautiful nights, it's perfect! My crew has finally adapted, altered and worked out the kinks of our summer routine. We are officially a smooth-working unit. That is...until they're driving me crazy, it's loud and I'm demanding "Go outside!" and my 3 boys whine, "It's too hot!" Amidst my fury of storming outside to prove that it is in fact not too hot to play, I quickly realize they're right--it's too hot! How are we supposed to enjoy our summer days without my kiddos going stir crazy? I can partake in my fair share of play dates, but they need more. I need more!

The Correct(ed) Smile LOCAL BEE CAVE DENTIST SHARES HIS PASSION FOR SMILES ARTICLE ALISSA PALLAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

Dr. Steven Haase

here is nothing quite like a pure, uninhibited smile. It instills a feeling of sheer joy in the beholder; the kind of joy that fills your soul from your head all the way to the tips of your toes. We are all capable of producing this unmistaken symbol of happiness. In fact, once a baby has figured out the facial muscles to put a smile on their face, there’s no going back. A baby smiles 200 times a day. As adults, there are clearly more factors impacting our smile. Studies report stress, work, and smile/mouth appearance are the main contributors in how often we smile. The average woman smiles 62 times a day. The average man smiles a mere eight times a day. A genuine smile is the window to the soul. It is the one language that is truly universal across the entire globe. A great deal can be gleaned from a smile. Studies show that an aligned, pearly-white smile is an indicator of someone who is healthy, intelligent and financially secure. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) reports virtually all people interviewed (99.7 percent) believe the smile is an important social asset. According to the AACD, a great majority of people report they find the opposite sex more appealing when they smile. In any social interaction people are drawn to those of us who smile. Local Bee Cave dentist Steven Haase, D.D.S., says the value of a beautiful smile is priceless; it can be influential in determining many aspects of a person’s life including self-esteem, happiness, confidence, stress, success and attractiveness. So what about a noticeable, not-so-beautiful smile? Three-quarters (74 percent) of adults believe an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chances for career success (AACD). This smile does not have to be permanent. It can be a work in progress. With advances in today’s technology, there are many options available to give you the smile you feel you are meant to wear. Smile design and preparation differ tremendously depending on the jaw and skeletal position of the upper and lower arches of the teeth. Haase is focused on not only making a smile look pretty, it must function correctly or it will lead to broken, worn, or worse, loose teeth. When a bite is incorrect, the teeth are always compromised. The strong facial muscles attempt to correct the bite at the unfortunate expense of the teeth and smile.

12

Lake Austin Lifestyle | July 2015

When dental procedures are performed the result should look completely natural. Haase spends a great deal of time with his patients examining every aspect of their smile. “I call the lips the frame around the picture. We can make a beautiful new smile only to have the lips, or frame, look terrible. Enhancement with Botox and facial fillers can finish the artwork, so to speak, by creating a beautiful “frame” around the new picture of beautiful teeth,” says Haase. Lip enhancement is quick and easy and can add tremendously to the entire picture. With today’s advances in technology, there are many options that will result in a more perfectly aligned, whiter and brighter smile. Correct planning is a must prior to the making of any new smile. Some of the options and materials Haase uses include bleaching systems, various porcelain types, colors, shapes and finishes. These options are nearly limitless and will be determined by the experienced dentist, patient and laboratory. There should be a clear communication between these parties when determining patient expectations, the financial aspect and the desired final results. “Once this is accomplished, it’s just a matter of time before a patient is smiling with a beautiful, new look,” says Haase. Good dentistry should be undetectable. The smile enhancing procedures chosen should not stray far from your personal uniqueness. It speaks of you as an individual. Studies have found that a smile can actually increase serotonin levels for both the giver and the receiver. According to Mark Stibich, M.D., “Smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers, and serotonin. Together these three make us feel good. Smiling is a natural drug.” “So just do it!” says Haase. A new smile is available at any age. It is life changing and easily accomplished once the entire puzzle is put together. “Nothing makes us smile more than seeing the smiles we produce at our office.” Smiling is contagious! Dr. Steven Haase has been a cosmetic family dentist since graduating from dental school in 1988. He is the author of Visiting the Tooth Doctor and was selected by the AACD to offer his patient, Grace Stephens, the opportunity to be the first recipient of the Give Back A Smile award in America. He believes smiles are important for all ages and creating them is his passion.

Preventing Skin Cancer Starts on the Playground with a Little Shade CENTRAL TEXANS BENEFIT FROM STRUCTURES BUILT BY THE SHADE PROJECT ARTICLE ANN TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE SHADE PROJECT

Shade Structure over Primrose School

P

assionate about skin is an apt way to refer to Lurleen Ladd, co-founder and executive director of The Shade Project. A fasttalking powerhouse of energy, Lurleen’s passion comes from within as she was successfully The Shade Project offering free sunscreen at a local event treated for squamous cell carcinoma in 2011. Shortly after her scare, Lurleen started The Shade Project with her husband Dan Ladd, D.O., an Austin board certified dermatologist and founder of Tru-Skin Dermatology. The Shade Project mission is to prevent skin cancer through education, outreach and building shade structures where children play. “Skin cancer is increasing at younger ages,” says Lurleen. “There are more cases of skin cancer than breast, lung, or other types of cancer combined.” She urges Americans to heed the U.S. Surgeon General’s advice to stop sunbathing and indoor tanning. “Tanned skin is damaged skin, and we need to shatter the myth that tanned skin is a sign of health,” says Surgeon General Boris D. Lushniak, M.D., M.P.H. “When people tan or get sunburned, they increase their risk of getting skin cancer later in life.” More than 5 million people in the U.S. get skin cancer every year. One of those was Larry Don Greenway, M.D., a well-known orthopedic surgeon in Austin, who practiced medicine until age 76. “Dad was a workaholic and we all thought he’d die from a heart attack. It was quite a shock when we heard he had melanoma,” says his son John Greenway, the board president for The Shade Project and an Austin lawyer. 14

Lake Austin Lifestyle | July 2015

Following his father’s passing, the family suggested others donate to The Shade Project in his memory. Thus began a relationship which led John to join the non-profit’s board. “The Shade Project's Board is in its early stages but the people involved have a lot of energy and interest in helping the non-profit achieve its goals," says John. "Lurleen is a one woman powerhouse and has done all the work herself during the past few years. She is ready to take The Shade Project to the next level with the fantastic board she has now assembled." The Shade Project built its first shade structure in Austin at Lamar Middle School in 2012. The following year, shade coverage went in at Rosewood Park’s Splash Pad; and in March of this year at J.L. Long Elementary in East Dallas, recipient of the first grant given by The Shade Project. Partial contributions to other projects were made to the Austin state-supported living center, LBJ High School and SafePlace. Guests at the Down & Derby fundraiser for The Shade Project

The cost to build and install each shade structure ranges from $10,000 to $15,000 and raising funds is only part of the effort that goes into Raising funds with a Derby party each project. “I tell people they are at the beginning of a journey to get a structure built. It’s all about pulling all the right resources together to get the project started,” says Lurleen who often advises others on how to get a shade project built. Among the necessary documents are a site plan, permits, support from stakeholders and obtaining bids. Lurleen educates them on how to start gathering documents, putting together a timeline and then is able to refer them to USA Shade for preferred pricing. “Shade is not an afterthought because that is how a park will function best. If there is no shade, playground equipment just won’t be used when it’s hot.” Lurleen recognizes the Shade Project cannot fulfill everyone’s need for shade. Of utmost importance to her in the future is starting a dialogue about skin cancer so that it becomes a matter of public policy. “I want to hit a home run in Central Texas by building more structures and setting goals that lead us to a public discussion of skin cancer prevention.” Pointing to Australia, Lurleen says schools there have a no hat/ no play policy and provide students with sunscreen, as well as shade. Although Australia still has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, skin cancer rates dropped after public policy initiatives began. “Austin is a sunny environment and everyone needs to take steps for prevention and get a skin cancer screening every year. Protecting your skin has to be a daily process, just like wearing your seat belt.” Lurleen admits it's sometimes a struggle to convince others to wear sunscreen daily and reapply often. “When people tell me they don’t want to wear sunscreen, I say then you can’t argue with me about wearing a hat, sunglasses and avoiding peak exposure hours from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.,” says Lurleen. She also urges them to explore other products that are now on the market, including more natural sunscreens and rash guard clothing such as tops, swimsuits and other clothing that protects skin when outdoors or in the water. Lurleen also suggests that sunscreen users look for a mineral-based broadband sunscreen, which is white when applied, and use SPF30 or higher. Reapplying every 30 minutes is a must, even with sunscreen higher than SPF 30, which is traditionally more expensive. And don’t forget your lips, ears, hair part, feet and other areas when applying sunscreen. “We are all in need of education and that’s why The Shade Project is so important,” says Lurleen. “We know prevention, early detection and skin cancer screening saves lives.” The Shade Project is currently working on growing its committees. If you are interested in getting involved, please go to TheShadeProject.org/Contact.

From India to Austin, Presidential Scholar Semi-Finalist Finds New Home INTERNATIONAL TEENS BECOME BEST FRIENDS AT WESTLAKE HIGH

eing the new kid in school is hard, no matter your age. It is exceptionally tough to transfer as a high school junior and move to a new country. Spoorthi Krishnaraj first heard her parents discussing the idea of moving from Bangalore, India, to the U.S. only about a month before she landed in Austin during the summer of 2013. Family friends suggested the move while their children were in high school to help them transition before they attended a college in the U.S. India was the only home Krishnaraj remembers as her family moved from California back to India when she was four years old. An admittedly shy person, Krishnaraj was worried about getting the classes she needed to graduate on time; learning about her new hometown and its customs; and, most of all, making friends at a new school. “I felt way out of my comfort zone,” says Krishnaraj. “I was super shy and I didn’t know where I would fit in.” Yet on her first day at Westlake High School, she found her new best friend Chelsea Fuchs, who had just moved to Austin from Singapore. Bonding immediately, the girls found that they had both traveled nearly 10,000 miles with their families to reach Austin, both had lived in cities with populations in 18

the millions, they were both in their junior year and neither knew what to expect at their new school. “The big issue was that we had both moved from Asian countries with similar education systems,” she says. “We had to figure out the system here, and figure out how to express ourselves in college applications in spite of the complications of the transition.” With help from each other, both teens excelled with Krishnaraj earning a spot as a semifinalist in the U.S. Presidential Scholars program, one of only three from Austin and one of just 28 from Texas. Although not named as one of the three Presidential scholars from Texas, she says she is honored to have made it to the semifinals. Established in 1964, the Presidential scholar program honors 141 of the nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Based on ACT/SAT scores, high school seniors are named as candidates and invited to complete an application to move on in the recognition program. The application includes several essays and requires a recommendation letter from a teacher. Those who are named as scholars receive special recognition at a ceremony at the White House. “I asked my physics teacher, Nancy Misage, who has been like a mentor, to me to write my recommendation,” says

Krishnaraj. “She is my most inspiring teacher. She loves her subject so much and makes it enjoyable.” Physics will definitely come into play as Krishnaraj plans to study biomedical engineering in the fall at The University of Texas at Austin. There, she will join her brother, Sagar, who is a year ahead of her. Krishnaraj recognizes that her mother, Seetha, and father, Satish, have made lots of sacrifices for her and her brother to get them to Austin. Her mother ran a successful preschool in Bangalore and had to stay behind for several months to wrap up her business as well as lease their house. Her father had to find an apartment and schools in Austin for his children, as well as find a job. He is now a mobile application architect for Ventyx. Krishnaraj credits both her parents for inspiring her. “My dad is always one to make us work harder. My dad thought the Presidential Scholarship nomination was good, but said you can do more. He’s not easily impressed and that has been good for me. In college, I want to be a go-getter and have internships, try things on my own, find out what my interests are and take it all to the next level.”

But maintaining the balancing act between work and family sometimes means drawing a line. For Wright that means setting rigid office hours and sticking to them. “Work can be consuming when you love it. It is easy to lose track of time when you are having fun, but you quickly regret that loss of time when you don't see your children enough in the morning and evening. Five minutes can turn into two hours quickly. I make sure I have a set time daily that I am walking away from my passion and walking into my calling as a mother. My children and husband are my heart and soul,” Wright says. Wright loves her job and enjoys what she does, but more than that, she enjoys time with her family; playing in the yard, feeding the fish together and sharing stories. That’s her priority. Listening to animated Giada’s plans for the day and snuggling with Julian over breakfast and coffee while the dogs lounge at her feet brings much joy to her morning and helps start the day off right. She wouldn’t want to do without it. “I am thankful to have a venue to help others feel better about themselves and a lifestyle to enjoy my family, without either one encroaching on the other,” Wright says. And that’s precisely how she wants it.

Don't Lose Your Cool HOW TO HAVE AN ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME IN THE AUSTIN HEAT

ARTICLE AMBER GROCE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

e're right in the middle of the summer months and the thermometer begins to rise to those triple digit numbers. We Austinites love being outdoors, but sometimes we just have to retreat inside to escape that summer heat. We all know AC is a must with Texas heat, but we also don’t want to break the bank with our electric bill. Austin Energy raises its rates in summer to match the higher demand for energy and to encourage conservation. Robert Cullick, director of communications and marketing at Austin Energy suggests setting the thermostat at 78 degrees when you're home, and at 85 degrees when you're away. By participating in the Power Partner Thermostat program, you can earn an $85 rebate for letting Austin Energy access your approved Internet-connected thermostat. When the demand for electricity is highest, Austin Energy schedules events that modify your thermostat settings to use less energy. Your participation in this program helps prevent unplanned outages and reduces overall costs. Customers agree to let Austin Energy briefly adjust the temperature setting on their thermostats (not more than 4 degrees) when the demand for electricity is highest. These minor changes help prevent outages and reduce energy use without significantly impacting comfort. The changes are likely to occur about 15 days per year from June to September between the hours of 4 to 6:00 p.m. When you have your AC on, one of the fastest ways to lose the cool air is through windows. Having “green” windows installed can make a huge difference. Marvin Windows and Doors, only available in Austin at Amazing Siding & Windows, is the leader in energy-efficient solutions. These windows are made with Ultrex pultruded fiberglass; a material made from silica sand which is a safe and abundant natural resource. This product takes considerably less energy to create than most other window and door materials. Along with having “green” windows, closing the blinds and curtains will help keep direct sunlight out of your home.

Lake Austin Lifestyle | July 2015

Tips to Save on AC Clean or change air filters monthly. Dirty filters make your system work harder and run longer than necessary. If you have central air and heat, do not close vents in unused rooms. This could increase pressure and cause duct leaks. Use a programmable, internet-connected thermostat. It will automatically adjust the temperature and save you money while you're asleep or away. Set your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher. Each degree lower increases your energy use by 6% to 8%. Raise the thermostat to 85 degrees when you are away for two hours or more. Ceiling fans help make your home feel cool with their "wind-chill" effect. Just remember, they don't actually lower the temperature of your home so when you leave the room, turn them off. Clean your AC condenser/evaporator coils at the beginning of the season. Clean coils lower your energy costs, extend the unit's life, and provide cleaner air for you to breathe. Regular maintenance of your air conditioning unit helps keep your system running at peak efficiency and will prolong the life of the equipment. The EnergyStar program recommends two services per year; one in spring to prepare for the cooling season and one in fall for the heating season.

My Child has a Tick Bite PREVENTING LYME DISEASE

T

icks are in the news a lot this time of year. And this summer, due to increased temperatures and increased rainfall, there are supposed to be even more of those little buggers. Here are a few tips on how to prevent tick bites and what to do if your child is bitten. The first mode of protection is prevention. If you and your family are going to be in wooded areas, wear protective clothing and hats and walk in the center of the trails. In addition, either spray exposed skin and clothing with products that contain at least 20-30 percent DEET, or use Permethrin treated clothing and camping wear. It is important to do frequent “tick checks” while hiking or camping—Lyme Disease can only be spread if the tick has been attached for greater than 24 hours, so removing those guys as quickly as possible is important. If you find a tick, take a pair of fine tweezers, grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and gently pull until the tick releases. If you leave some mouth parts in the skin, that is ok—there is no higher risk of your child getting Lyme disease if the head is left behind. Clean the area with alcohol and check the site several times over the next month or so for any sign of a circular rash. A trip to the doctor is not necessary unless you are having trouble removing the tick, or you begin to see a rash at the site of the bite. What is Lyme Disease? It is a disease caused by a bacteria transmitted to humans by blacklegged ticks. 95 percent of the cases of Lyme Disease reported occur in fourteen states, and Texas is not one of those fourteen. According to the CDC, the incidence of Lyme Disease in Texas in 2013 was 0.2/100,000 cases. There were only 48 confirmed cases in 2013 in Texas. And keep in mind that the state reporting the disease is the state where the patient resides, not necessarily the state where they may have been exposed. So relax, practice good prevention techniques and enjoy your summer! This healthful information is provided by our friends at After Hours Pediatrics.

Audi A6 Premier Plus interior

THE AUDI A6

A PERFECT BLEND OF LUXURY, PERFORMANCE, AND VALUE ARTICLE GRANT PALLAN

T

he luxury car is a status symbol which conveys an undeniable message with just one glance. But it's so much more than a symbol; it's an experience. The Audi A6 delivers on all counts. Gaze into its headlights and you’ll be captivated. The A6 is a mid-sized luxury sedan that is a flawless declaration of style, elegance, cutting-edge performance and grace. This car is similar to the iPhone in that it improves and outdoes itself year over year. The A6 is consistently on the leading edge of vehicle technologies; from Audi’s award winning Quattro all-wheel drive, to their impressive array of engine choices, and unparalleled safety record. In fact, the A6 was recently named the 2015 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick. Prices start at $46,200 for frontwheel drive and top out around $61,600+ for all-wheel drive. When you climb into the A6 you realize you are being pampered. The leather seating cradles you in comfort and the perimeter is accented beautifully in woods and metals. The insulated cabin allows the surround sound system to be experienced at its fullest. Controls are accessed through a LED touchscreen with 3D graphics. A6’s interior space allows for five adults to stretch without need for adjusting the seats. A6 is arguably Audi’s most comprehensive vehicle in their sedan line-up. The A6 sporty silhouette is essentially the midway progression between the smaller A4 and the full-size A8 sedan models. Every A6 features Audi’s iconic combination Xenon & LED headlights, 18” premium wheels, sunroof, three-zone automatic climate controls with touchscreen interface, driver assistance with personal device integration, and Bluetooth. The options and combinations Audi offers for the A6 seem endless, allowing you to design your ultimate dream machine. Options include

20” wheels, ventilated seats, Bose surround sound, heads up display with navigation, corner and top view cameras, full LED headlights and taillights, night vision assistant, blind spot detection, adaptive cruise control, on-board 4G LTE for wifi capability, and more. The A6 sits on a 114.6” wheelbase with a 78.3” width (without mirrors). Dimensional balance gives A6 ride comfort as well as responsive handling. The motor is available in three configurations: 252 HP turbocharged 2.0L I4, 333 HP supercharged 3.0L V6, and 240 HP turbo-diesel. The 2.0L is paired with a seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission. V6 motors are combined with an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Fuel economy across these options range between 20-25 mpg city and 30-38 mpg highway. Included in the Audi A6 are drive select options which enable the driver to toggle performance/handling settings between comfort, auto, individual and dynamic. This essentially transforms the A6 into four different performing cars at the tap of a screen. Audi offers their legendary Quattro all-wheel drive for both gas and diesel powered V6s for enhanced traction. For the sports car enthusiast, the A6 can be transformed into the white-knuckling S6. The S6 features a twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 450 HP, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with Quattro all-wheel drive, and adaptive air suspension technology. To sum it up, Audi A6 can be broken down into 4 price categories: Premium $46,200, Premium Plus $49,900, Prestige $61,600 and S6 $70,900. All Audi's come with a four year or 50,000 miles warranty. The A6 is sleek, sporty, and comfortable – excellent value at $46,200. Once you drive the A6 you'll want it to be your daily experience.

Parting Thoughts "I think I've Got This" by Lisa Lala, Birds on a Wire series

Birds on a Wire WORDS KENDRA MATHEWSON

O

ne of my dear friends is a painter who sees the world through her amazing artist eyes. When she was the newbie in our neighborhood, her heart was sensitive to how to integrate her family into the community. Driving one day she noticed how birds perched on a telephone wire seemed to choose when to gather, and who to pause with. As she watched the birds sit, and then come and go, those birds spoke to her of how we create community, who we keep counsel with, and even the dynamic nature of the process. She had moved in down the street, and it was my love of her work that initially drew us together. We shared a moment of connection on my front porch steps, and lingered like the birds chatting on the telephone wire, before we flew off back to our hectic lives. Over the years, through working on house projects, painting together, building a club, learning new skills together, cooking meals together, playing cards as couples, we’d pause from the “flights” our lives demanded (me flying around in my minivan and she in her Mini Cooper) to sit like those birds on a wire and talk over tea. This is how we became friends. That is community. That is how community begins and how it grows. These one-on-one connections expand and extend and become a beautiful web of interconnectedness. Through words, stories, shared experiences and common interests, we find inspiration to create our communities.

My friend’s keen observations became the main theme of a series that has become her signature. The beauty of her Birds on a Wire series, and her reflections on community, have inspired me to embrace and celebrate more the important place it has in our lives. We live in such an individualistic society that our personal empowerment sometimes overshadows the significance of our need for each other. Like the ingredients of an exceptional recipe, or the materials used to construct a quality home, a community is only as good as the people who comprise it. Because the people are who ignite an idea, imagine a future, share an event, take the bull by the horns, see a need and fill it, spread the word about a new business, open their home to new families, bring a meal when there’s an illness, invest in a neighbor or believe in a student, give witness to struggles and celebrate successes. Our magazine is your “wire.” Let us pause to read the stories that have been inspired by our community, to drink in the beautiful photographs that paint the story of us. Email your editor and publisher, or better yet reach out and enjoy a cup of coffee together. Let us stop here in the pages of our publication each month and celebrate like birds on a wire, before we fly off back to our busy lives. You inspire us.

Ultherapy is a non-surgical procedure for the face and neck that stimulates the body’s own natural healing process to lift the skin over time. The use of FDA-cleared ultrasound technology enables physicians, for the first time, to see and then treat the deepest support layers of the skin – typically addressed in cosmetic surgery – without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.

“Ultherapy represents a whole new category within aesthetic medicine,” says Dr. Wright
