I
recently was taken on a local adventure that whisked me across the ocean in an instant! I was sitting on the point of a boat, cruising over the water, and as we approached a stunning bridge leading into a peaceful channel. I thought to myself, “where am I!?!” As we slowly drifted our way under the bridge I thought, “Oh my, I’m in Venice!” The green trees created a canopy over my head and on each side of the channel were glorious homes with garages that did not hold cars, but boats! This world was floating on water, and as we passed each home I was overwhelmed by it’s beauty. Someone pinch me, I never got on a plane for this adventure, I am still in
Austin, right!?! Pinch! Ouch! Yep, I am still in Austin...I am on Lake Austin! I never knew Venice could be so close! Have you seen this place I speak of? If not, it’s time! It’s time to jump on a boat and explore Lake Austin. We Austinites have a true gem in our backyards; Lake Austin. TAKING A “STAND” AGAINST CHILDHOOD CANCER Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for all kids with cancer, will invite volunteers across the country to take a stand against childhood cancer when Alex’s Lemonade Days returns, June 12-14. The national volunteer fundraiser commemorates 8-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Scott’s challenge to help her raise $1 million for childhood cancer cures, one cup of lemonade at a time. The Foundation will once again invite volunteers across the country to host lemonade stands over the course of three days to continue Alex’s mission and bring renewed attention to the fight against childhood cancer. ALSF’s National Lemonade Days began in 2004 when Alex Scott set her sights on raising $1 million to fight childhood cancer, including hers. Alex invited volunteers to join her in hosting lemonade stands to help achieve her ambitious goal one dollar and one lemonade stand at a time. Through the help of these volunteers, Alex would reach her million dollar goal before losing her life to cancer in August of that year. Each June, the weekend before Father’s Day, Alex’s mission of raising $1 million returns through Alex’s Lemonade Days, when supporters everywhere contribute to a cure.

Boarding 101 PETS NEED VACATIONS, TOO ARTICLE AMBER GROCE
W
hile we’re starting to plan our summer trips, many times the furry family members are not able to join. Finding a house/pet sitter can be difficult, so boarding is another option. Never boarded your dog before? If you’re wondering how everything works, here’s some advice from our trusted partner: DogBoy’s Dog Ranch. 1. Do your research! Tour any facility that you think looks good online. Ask around to your friends, your vet and any other dog lovers you know to see what pet care facilities others use and why. Look for a place that is the best fit for your dog. 2. Once you’ve found a great facility, make sure to have everything in order well in advance. Send ahead shot records and make sure your reservation is made as soon as you know the dates. Great facilities fill up fast in the summer months, so make sure you’ve got a spot! 3. It’s a good idea to bring your dog for daycare a time or two before boarding. That way, your dog is used to the facility and feels at home and comfortable when they return for a longer stay. 4. You can bring items from home to make your dog more comfortable, like a t-shirt that has been worn by you for familiar smells, a favorite toy and even a comfortable bed. Bringing their own food is also a good idea if you are worried about any stomach upset. 5. Finally, when you return, be prepared for your dog to be very tired. At DogBoy’s, it’s not uncommon for dogs to sleep for 2-3 days after a boarding stay. If you are at a quality facility, they will not only be physically tired, but mentally as well. Dogs who spend most of their time lounging at home, but have lots of room to run while boarding, may also go home with worn or torn pads on their paws. This condition is fairly common and will heal within a few days. This can be treated and even prevented with certain products if your dog is prone to this happening. Boarding is a great way to give your dog a fun vacation while you are on vacation! These tips can make it enjoyable for the both of you.

CELEBRATING QUALITY LOCAL INGREDIENTS AT JACK ALLEN’S KITCHEN
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ALISHA MCDARRIS
L
ocal in source, Texan in spirit and all about great food, fun and hospitality. That’s Austin’s Jack Allen’s Kitchen and a new location just opened on North Capital of Texas Highway near Davenport Village. It’s the third Jack Allen’s location in the Austin area. The first opened in Oak Hill five and a half years ago, the second in Round Rock two and a half years ago, and the newest location in April, and at all of them patrons will find a plethora of quality meals made with locally sourced ingredients. “Local means better,” Chef and co-owner Allen Gilmore says matter of factly. When diners sit down at Jack Allen’s Kitchen, they’ll see that it’s true. They’ll be welcomed by a friendly and knowledgeable staff and a plate of pimento cheese and flatbread crackers, then energetic servers will be their tour guide through the menu, highlighting the local ingredients. They’ll learn from what Texas farms or fisheries tomatoes, quail and shrimp originated. They’ll see the artistry and hard work that went into every batch of local cheese and spirits. It’s that attention to detail and dedication to local ingredients, not to mention the community mindset, that makes Jack Allen’s Kitchen what it is. “There are so many great local sources within the state of Texas,” says co-owner Tom Kamm. “It’s all about the relationship with the farmers and having our staff represent the work that they’ve done.” Part of the respect for the quality ingredients Jack Allen’s Kitchen acquires is in the lack of waste. If chefs can’t use it fast enough, it doesn’t get tossed, it gets pick-

led and utilized as temporary décor around the dining room until it can be put to use. In fact, it isn’t uncommon to see a server or chef pluck a mason jar full of pickled quail eggs or green beans from a shelf or off the bar to be used in the evening’s specials. “What I like to do is get the best ingredients I can and use it the right way,” Gilmore says. “The right way” includes specials that range from fried avocado and shrimp salad to pulled pork sliders with house-made barbecue to fried green tomatoes. Regular offerings include appetizers like BLT sliders, a hot ticket item at $10.99. For the main event, check out the killer Baja Style Fish Tacos for $12.99 or Chicken Fried Anything (chicken breast, pork chop, beef ribs or NY strip steak) for between $11.99-$14.99. Thirsty? Try a Tito’s Sage and Grapefruit Splash for $7.50 or a (512) Pecan Porter. Or try a bit of everything during happy hour from 3-7 p.m. Monday through Friday when appetizers are half-price and drink specials abound. A brunch buffet is available on Sundays and offers items like migas, green chili pork and eggs, jalepeno sausage and biscuits and gravy, all for $16.99 per person. But if a decision can’t be made, don’t ask Gilmore for his favorite; he won’t tell you. “It’s like asking me to choose my favorite child,” Gilmore says. Not only is it a fun place to eat, but the atmosphere is all about comfort and fun with reclaimed wood walls, patio fireplace, twinkling lights and even a geometric portrait of Johnny Cash. All together, it’s enough to create a solid Jack Allen’s Kitchen fan base, which is what Gilmore and Kamm were aiming for.
“We’re not going to be the best restaurant in the city, we want to be the most favorite restaurant in the city,” Gilmore says. After all, some of the best restaurants in the city can’t match the lively and teeming atmosphere that Jack Allen’s offers night after night. Jack Allen’s Kitchen fans can now even take some of Gilmore’s recipes home with them. In October, Gilmore’s first cookbook, Jack Allen’s Kitchen: Celebrating the Taste of Texas, was released. It highlights not only some of Gilmore’s favorite recipes, but features many of the local farms, wineries and spirit makers that the restaurant offers. It’s available at the restaurants, online and at local Austin bookstores. LOCATIONS:

hen you think of healthcare, you probably think of medical checkups. Oral health sometimes takes a backseat, but it shouldn’t be forgotten. According to American Dental Hygienists Association, about 78 percent of Americans have had at least one cavity by age 17 and 80 percent of the U.S. population has some form of periodontal gum disease. “Oral health starts from birth. Infants are born without the harmful bacteria, which causes caries or periodontal disease,” Dr. Steven Haase of Oak Canyon Dentistry says. “Such harmful bacteria is unknowingly transferred from another person, such as a parent, grandparent or sibling when sharing utensils, toothbrushes and kissing, which introduces microbes to the infant. These microbes will remain in the child’s mouth for life. “ Not only is oral health an important part of keeping your body healthy, it also plays a role in your appearance. “The mouth is the physical and emotional gateway to the body promoting personal attributes such as a great

JOST VAN DYKE
Named for an early Dutch settler and former pirate, rugged scenery and colorful folklore make up Jost Van Dyke. With fewer than 300 inhabitants, it measures just four miles by three, with the highest point at 1,054 feet and has been home to Arawak Indians, Caribs, Dutch, Africans and the British. Notable inhabitants have included William Thornton, architect of the U.S. Capitol Building, and John Lettsome, founder of the London Medical Society. Get your historical fix at this island. ANEGADA
Named Anegada or the “Drowned Land” by the Spanish, Anegada is the only coral island in the Virgin Islands’ volcanic chain. Measuring 11 miles by 3, its highest point is just 28 feet above sea level. Striking coral reefs surround the island, including the Eastern Caribbean’s third largest continuous reef, Horseshoe Reef. Secluded sandy beaches protected by the sheltering reef. Be sure to bring the camera while exploring this island. If you’re feeling the travel itch and are looking to set sail, the British Virgin Islands has plenty to offer an Austinite.

A Room With a View LUXURY WESTLAKE HOME WITH STUNNING VIEWS ARTICLE ALISHA MCDARRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY ADAM STEINER
P
erched atop 1.4 acres of rolling green hills is a quiet and contemporary masterpiece right in the heart of Westlake Hills. It sits on a high point amidst a rustic hill country setting and offers sweeping views of live oaks and Austin’s stunning skyline. The surroundings lend a beauty and privacy to the house, yet it's only a ten-minute drive from downtown Austin. Designed as a collaborative project by the owners, Cornerstone Architects and Schatz Builders, it was built in 2011. It’s the second house the trio has worked on together and is even featured on the cover of a book of Cornerstone Architect’s recent work. Since coming on the market in March, house hunters ranging from bachelors and car collectors to empty nesters and travel enthusiasts have all been impressed by the stunning views and seamless integration of design elements with the natural setting. Some love it for the quiet privacy it offers, nestled amongst live oaks and only accessible from a private gated drive. Some love it for the space it affords with four bedrooms, a 12-car garage and a nearly 1,200-square-foot apartment. But all love it for the wall-to-ceiling window and door system that offers an uninterrupted view of the nature that surrounds the house.

“In every room you feel like you're part of the outdoor setting," says Cindy Goldrick of Wilson Goldrick Realtors. It's exactly the feeling the owners were trying to create. The house was designed in an L-shape so that all of the rooms from the main level lead out onto the expansive patio, complete with pool and spa. Inside, the house was designed with exquisite attention to detail. Scored concrete floors on the main level meet with walnut and stone walls, further evidence of the designers’ goal to blend interior and exterior elements. A cook’s kitchen with grey tone Bulthaup cabinets and a center island with Carrara marble countertops offers a gathering place for guests before they continue into the dining or living area to relax by the fireplace. A prep kitchen was designed to easily conceal the food prep area and allow easy access to the outdoor grill and gourmet pizza oven. A private master suite and office area on the opposite end of the main level create an intimate and relaxing setting. Up a free-standing staircase is an informal living area with a private deck and three additional en-suite bedrooms, all with views just as spectacular as the level below. Beneath the main level of the house, atop a concrete and steel foundation, is a separate one bedroom apartment and a drive-through 12-car garage, perfect for car collectors or frequent dinner party guests.

Real Wives
Introducing ... Ariana Vincent REAL WIVES OF LAKE AUSTIN WHO/WHAT LIVES IN YOUR HOUSE?
Our recently renovated home was originally owned by the Grace family, some early pioneers of this area. According to local lore, they owned much of the property between Hwy. 71 and Barton Creek Blvd. off of Bee Cave Road. I live in our quiet abode with my wonderful husband, Michael. We have many residents outside of the home including a wide variety of wild birds who come to one of the three bird feeders we’ve installed right outside the picture window. The birds include lesser goldfinch, sparrows, cardinals and an occasional curious dove who can’t quite understand how to access the feed from the feeders, but are usually content with the plentiful seeds that are on the ground. We also have hummingbirds who come to our lovely glass and brass hummingbird feeder. There’s the occasional deer, a copious supply of cottontails, some coyotes in the distance and a family of roadrunners who escort us down the drive. It’s a good life, filled with grace. NATIVE TO AUSTIN OR TRANSPLANTED?
I moved to Austin in 1966 to attend the University of Texas. I grew up in Houston and then went to high school and business college in San Antonio before I moved to Austin. I love the people and the ecosystem of Central Texas. I feel very much at home here. My best friend of over 30 years lives just seven minutes from me in the Cuernavaca area off of Bee Cave Road and I’m very grateful for that. FAVORITE “PAMPER YOURSELF” OR SPLURGE ITEM?
even celebrated New Year’s Eve listening to the Pavarotti with our hosts at the B&B. It was a magical experience that set a good foundation for our relationship. FAVORITE DATE NIGHT RESTAURANT?
We enjoy dining on the porch at The Grove on 620, Gumbo’s in Bee Cave and at Truluck’s Seafood Restaurant near the Arboretum. We like to eat out before we go to the symphony or to an event at One World Theatre. For an informal meal, we frequently enjoy a tasty and delicious meal at Whole Foods in the Galleria or at The Grove on Bee Cave Road near 360.
I love receiving facials and massages as part of my focus on good health and well-being. There are many wonderful choices among the many extraordinary estheticians and massage therapists in the Lake Austin area. I especially enjoy going to Westlake Dermatology on Bee Cave Road, Yoga Yoga Spa on 360, and Carol O’Neil at the Carriage House Skin Care on 360 and Westlake Drive.
WHAT DO YOU RECORD ON THE DVR?
ORGANIZATION THAT GETS MOST OF YOUR VOLUNTEER TIME?
FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM?
The way I give back to the community is to offer scholarships to people who could not otherwise afford the classes that I offer through my company, The Ariana Institute for Wellness Education.
My favorite sports team is the UT football team. When I was a university student, Earl Campbell won the Heisman Trophy and UT was No. 1. It was a very exciting time to be a senior at the University! I studied photography with Garry Winogrand at UT and I was fortunate enough to get to photograph football games from the sidelines and that deepened my love of the sport. My husband played football and lacrosse for Yale, so he likes watching the occasional New England Patriots football game.
BEST VACATION EVER?
The first vacation my husband and I took together as husband and wife was to Costa Rica near the town of Esparza. We stayed at a lovely B&B that a friend from Austin recommended. The couple who owned the B&B guided us to many of the most interesting places in Costa Rica where we boated, went horseback riding, snorkeled, visited spas, hiked, went to butterfly sanctuaries, participated in excursions led by ecologically enlightened guides and 26

We actually enjoy movies on the big screen at the Cinemark at the Hill Country Galleria and we are a Netflix family. Movies that we particularly enjoy are romantic dramas like Ms. Potter, starring Reese Witherspoon and Ewan McGregor, and nature movies, like Planet Earth by David Attenborough.
FAVORITE GADGET OR GIZMO?
I love technology and I’m an Apple girl through and through from iPhone to laptop! I also love our GPS. That saved our marriage!
UNIQUE OR INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF?
Everyday • Weddings • Events
I have many facets to the jewel of myself: I’m a photographer, an art aficionado, a writer, an educator, a wife, a mother, a dancer and a lover of life. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO EXERCISE IN THE LAKE AUSTIN AREA?
I love to participate in personal training and exercise classes at Gold’s Gym in the Westlake Village and at the Hills Fitness Center on Bee Cave Road. I enjoy Pilates, Zumba, core conditioning, body pump muscle conditioning, body step aerobics and yoga. I also love to participate in yoga classes at Yoga Yoga Westlake on 360. WHAT DO YOU DO PROFESSIONALLY?
I have been an educator for over 16 years and I enjoy that career very much. I have been featured in the Spotlight feature of the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and I was honored to be included in the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame. I’m also a writer who has seven books available at my author’s page on Amazon. I’ve previously been a professional photographer and a legal assistant, and I was a massage therapist for over 34 years. My husband is a Certified Advanced Rolfer who studied directly with Dr. Ida Rolf, and he’s been in that profession for over 42 years. We make a good team with our shared focus on healthy living and helping others live their best lives.

WHAT IS IT LIKE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD?
It is peaceful and quiet in our community. My closest neighbor is the principle bass player for the Austin Symphony Orchestra and he and his wife welcomed me warmly to the neighborhood when we initially moved here and we have been friends throughout the years. My best friend of over 30 years lives close by and she is a woman of many facets like I am. She’s a world traveler, a Gestalt therapist, a tai chi instructor, a yoga instructor and a tango dancer. We have taken many a tango class together. I live between One World Theatre and the Laura Library and feel very fortunate to be living a secluded life with access to all of the amenities of cultured urban living. It is definitely the best of all worlds. WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE?
I would love to remain in the property that I’m living in right now. I feel like a steward of the land and it is sacred to me. I’d love to build more walking trails on our property and establish a wildlife sanctuary here. I’d love to see the gardens that we have planted continue to grow and flourish. It would be fabulous to see our two grandsons go to school at the University of Texas at Austin. I can envision them loving the Austin lifestyle and Central Texas experience as much as I have throughout the course of my lifetime. I’d like to see progress in our community evolve with consideration for the fragility of the environment and with consideration for the people inhabiting these beautiful hills of the greater Lake Austin community.

A Window to My Dad WORDS LISA COOKE HARRISON
M
y dad had one of those milestone birthdays this past year. The kind that makes you sit back and think about a life well lived. He was just 51 when my mom died after a three-year battle with breast cancer. And the phrase “When God closes a door, He opens a window” has always made me think about our relationship after her passing. It was a tradition (expectation) in my college years for me to call home on Sundays. Every Sunday. No matter what. And this was long before the days of email and unlimited minutes. I might also talk to my mom during the week if she called from work, but those Sunday evening calls were a consistent part of our family communication dynamic. Most often my dad would pick up an extension (this was also in a pre-cordless phone world), say a few words and then leave the rest of the conversation to my mom. After my mom’s passing, I found myself, for the first time, in a position of having long phone conversations with my dad. They were almost awkward for me in the beginning but became easier in no time at all. There was a subtle shift in our relationship. After 34
Lake Austin Lifestyle | June 2015
some time I began to realize that a (big, heavy, important) door had certainly closed, but a magnificently brilliant window with a spectacular view had opened. If I want to pass along to my two sons some tidbits of wisdom that I learned by being Ken Cooke’s daughter, I need to teach them the following: 1) To whom much is given, much is expected. 2) Be involved in making your community better. 3) Never shy away from a difficult task. Consider it a challenge worth conquering. 4) Have a well-stocked workshop and know how to use every tool in it. 5) Always carry a clean handkerchief. Don’t wait until Father’s Day to pick up the phone and call your dad. And if he lives far away, don’t let birthday and holiday cards be the only time he sees your name in the return address corner of an envelope. To all of the dads out there: have a spectacular Father’s Day.
