Reasons # 28 and # 72 I love Austin! W
ow! October is a very impressive month. When the calendar flips to October 1st, fall is upon us. We are bombarded with pumpkin everything, from food and beer to decorations and pumpkin patches. Football season is well underway and the nights are finally cooler. But it doesn't stop there. In October we gear up for celebrations, the color pink, spooky decorations and popcorn munchin'. This month embodies: Oktoberfest, Breast Cancer Awareness, Halloween and National Popcorn Poppin' Month. So how do we enjoy this jam-packed fun month? With all of these festivities, of course! Which brings me to reason # 28 - our AustOberfest! This month we have an awesome opportunity to celebrate beer and its German heritage with our version of Oktoberfest. Austin has a long-time established German society that has poured its heart and soul into this festival, and we are fortunate enough to be a part of it! Donning our German attire and bringing our celebratory attitude, we get the chance to soak in German culture while enjoying a few beers. Reason # 72 - Austin is now the home of a breast imaging practice that only uses new cutting edge technology for mammograms. I love that the culture of Austin played a strong role in this practice choosing Austin to make it its home. As a woman, mother, sister, wife, daughter, aunt and friend, I feel it is extremely important that I receive the best of the best. With this new 3D technology available, I believe our health, and ultimately our lives, are better off by being able to choose this form of mammography. With October being breast cancer awareness month, this is the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of this new, life-altering technology.

Around Town STUDENTS RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITIES Selling refreshing lemonade, warm cookies and creative crafts, the students of Stepping Stone Schools in Austin put their business minds and giving hearts to work at the schools’ Young Entrepreneurs & Philanthropists summer camp program – all to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Texas (RMHC CTX). The students raised $3,000+ through the sale of their goods and Stepping Stone School matched and exceeded all funds. Together, they donated $6,500 to support the families with hospitalized children that rely on RMHC CTX. Stepping Stone’s summer camp program combines teaching students how to plan, prepare and conduct a series of businesses while learning how to give back. The young students did everything from developing advertisements and pricing strategies for their businesses, to learning how to work as a team and most importantly, had fun! “Stepping Stone School is thrilled to partner with RMHC for the sixth year,” expresses Rhonda Paver, executive director and founder of Stepping Stone School. “We appreciate the opportunity to develop the young minds and character of these children on behalf of our community.” Stepping Stone School’s Young Entrepreneurs & Philanthropists program began in 2010 and has supported RMHC CTX from year one. Since they began supporting RMHC CTX, Stepping Stone School has donated over $19,000.
CHANGES IN REAL ESTATE RULES GO INTO EFFECT THIS MONTH A new rule in the mortgage and real estate industry requires additional responsibilities regarding documentation for lenders, title, and other real estate settlement service providers. The TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosure (TRID) rule will cause mandatory delays when certain changes are made to closing documents, and require additional time for processing during each transaction. Realtors, home buyers and mortgage professionals are encouraged to provide all financial documents and commit to a lender before executing a purchase contract to ensure an on-time closing. Buyers should also chose a lender who is familiar with and trained in accordance to this new law. If you would like more information about this topic, please contact Brynn Medlar, marketing director for The Miller Group at 512.982.4603, email at themillergroupmarketing@gmail.com, or visit AjMillerLoans.net.

WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL RANKED AMONG NEWSWEEK'S TOP SCHOOLS Westlake High School has been ranked fourth in the state and number 106 nationally by Newsweek magazine, jumping 11 spots from last year’s 117 national mark. When comparing open-enrollment comprehensive high schools only, Westlake takes the number one ranking in the state; the three schools above Westlake are magnet and charter schools. Newsweek’s methodology was based on graduation rates, the number of graduates accepted into college, the number of advanced placement courses taken, the weighted composite of SAT and ACT scores, student retention and counselor-to-student ratio. When compared to historically high-ranking high schools around the state, Westlake rose to the top above Highland Park (112), Carroll Senior High (145) and Alamo Heights (407). Vandegrift (256) and Dripping Springs (480) were local top performers. Westlake High School also earned a Gold Star designation from Newsweek, which recognizes schools in which economically disadvantaged students performed at or above the state average in language arts and mathematics.

Making Women’s Health
a top priority
FOR RIVER PLACE OBGYN, IT’S A DAILY ENDEAVOR ARTICLE ALISHA MCDARRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY RIVER PLACE OB/GYN
E
very October the U.S. is covered in pink. From pink ribbons on clothing, support magnets on cars, to the National Football League sporting pink, its all in the name of breast cancer awareness and women’s health. It is the worthy cause that John Thoppil, M.D., and his team at River Place Ob/Gyn continue to fight for long after October has come to an end. All year round he champions for women’s health. In all of its many manifestations from breast cancer and heart disease, to day-to-day wellness and everything in between, women's health is Thoppil's top priority. In fact, the health of women is what he has dedicated his life to. Taking care of women is more than his mission, it’s his passion. At River Place Ob/Gyn Thoppil takes care of women no matter what stage of life they are in. He serves women who are ready to start a family and those whose family is complete. Thoppil is there for a young lady’s first annual exam and every year after. Every screening and ultrasound ensures his patients are well inside and out. The doctor-patient relationship developed through the yearto-year appointments is what gave Thoppil the desire to go into obstetrics and gynecology. These relationships are at the core of his reasoning for practicing medicine; helping to improve women's health and thus their quality of life. Thoppil helps women maintain total wellness in addition to excelling at high-risk pregnancies and in-office surgical procedures. 12
Lake Austin Lifestyle | October 2015
His skill and passion attributed to Thoppil being named one of Austin Monthly’s Top Doctors of 2015. He was also asked to serve on a new women’s health advisory committee in Texas where he will help optimize the state’s programs to benefit women’s health. For River Place Ob/Gyn, Thoppil focuses on his patients on a more personal level, providing the precise and individualized care that each woman needs. He knows that women’s health isn’t a blanket issue. Every woman requires unique care and he and his staff are ready and willing to sit with each and every patient and discuss the parts of their lives which play an important role in overall health. He individualizes a plan for each patient. “No two people are exactly the same,” says Thoppil. “It involves identifying risks like genetics and potentially dangerous lifestyle choices and making a proactive plan to help patients stay healthy. The plan may entail staying active, eating well, managing any negative genetic factors with medication, and scheduling regular screenings and exams on a timetable that’s right for each individual.” Thoppil's goal is to maintain total health and wellness for his patients. “We focus on how to stay healthy, not just on dealing with problems that may arise,” Thoppil says. However, while no two women are alike, several general rules apply when it comes to women’s health. An annual exam goes a long way towards catching potential problems before they exist. Women without an increased risk of breast cancer are urged to schedule a mammogram each year beginning at age 40. Those with a higher risk of cancer or abnormalities due to heredity are encouraged to begin screenings earlier or schedule exams more often. Whatever a woman’s needs are, “Our job is to help navigate the proper path to health,” says Thoppil.

WHO/WHAT LIVES IN YOUR HOUSE?
Myself, my husband Jeff (when he’s not traveling for work), our daughters Cate, age 11, 6th grader at HCMS and Lane, age 8, 3rd grader at BPE and Chewy the 3-year-old golden doodle. WORK OUTSIDE THE HOME? Yes, I am the school nurse at Bridge Point Elementary. This is my third year as a school nurse and it’s 100 times harder than I thought it would be. But the kids say the funniest things and it keeps me coming back. NATIVE AUSTINITE OR TRANSPLANTED TO THE AREA? Born in San Antonio and arrived in Austin in 1993 to attend the University of Texas. Except for a short stint in Atlanta, I’ve been here ever since. WHAT’S ON THE FLOOR OF YOUR CAR RIGHT NOW? Multiple headbands, car headphones for the DVD player, hair rubber bands, and a pair of flip flops. All of these items are underneath Lane’s feet. I fear she will be featured on that "hoarder show" some day. FAVORITE ‘PAMPER YOURSELF’ OR SPLURGE ITEM? The hydra facial at Woodhouse Day Spa. When it’s over, there’s this little jar with the impurities they pulled from my face. They will show you if you ask. I find it fascinating! GUILTIEST FOOD PLEASURE? Chocolate! I love all of it. TITLE OF A BOOK ON YOUR BEDSIDE TABLE? Stuck up! 100 objects inserted and ingested in places they shouldn’t be. It was my Mother’s Day present. I was a surgical nurse for a long time, so the book was a hit. 14

REAL WIVES OF LAKE AUSTIN
BEST VACATION EVER? Crested Butte, Colorado, in the summer. We go for two weeks every summer and I cry the whole way home. FAVORITE DATE NIGHT RESTAURANT? Jack Allen’s BEST THING ABOUT LIVING IN AUSTIN? The casual vibe. I live in scrubs or work out clothes and I like that I can go almost anywhere in Austin and not feel uncomfortable in my attire. FAVORITE COCKTAIL? Jack Daniels, Diet Coke and a lime. WHERE DO YOU WISH YOUR HUSBAND WOULD BUY YOUR NEXT GIFT? I want one of those Big O key chains, but they are $50 and I can’t justify spending that. But if HE spent that, I would be fine with it. FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM? Texas Longhorns. I love every sport, especially volleyball and football. UNIQUE OR INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOUR COLLEGE YEARS. I fainted three times during clinical rotations in nursing school. If someone young and impressionable is reading this, know that I questioned my career choice, but I’m so glad I stuck with it. Ironically, I now love gross stuff and thrive on my strong stomach. My current job doesn’t provide a lot of blood and guts, but when it does, I am at the top of my game. Ha! Do you know a “Real Wife” we should consider for a spotlight? Email Alissa. Aust-Oberfest
Rich in its German heritage, the Austin Saengerrunde celebrates with AustOberfest.
A
ccording to Wikipedia, beer is the world's most widely consumed alcoholic beverage and the third-most popular drink overall, after water and tea. It is thought by some to be the oldest fermented beverage; the foundation of the culture of beer-drinking nations and social traditions such as beer festivals, pub-crawling and pub games. One of these social traditions began in 1810 with Oktoberfest. Wikipedia defines Oktoberfest as the world's largest Volksfest (beer festival and traveling funfair). Held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, it is a 16-day folk festival running from late September to the first weekend in October with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations modeled after the original Munich event. In Austin, our Oktoberfest is called AustOberfest and this year will be held Saturday, October 17th. The third annual AustOberfest will be twice as big and twice as fun in 2015. “Oh 16
Lake Austin Lifestyle | October 2015
ARTICLE ALISSA PALLAN | PHOTOGRAPHY J. SCARTH PHOTOGRAPHY wow, get ready!” says Reagan Roland, executive director for Austin Saengerrunde. “Seventeenth street will be closed this year for the festival. We will have a Bier Garten, Bier Hall, Stein Holding Competitions and of course, sausage! Fifteen of the best central Texas sausage vendors will be making their unique brand of wurst. There will be music and bowling along with German hair braiding and thousands of lederhosen/ dirndl wearing Austinites,” says Roland. Sounds like the perfect blend of celebrating German culture – beer and all you can eat sausage. So how is it that Austin has only had an Oktoberfest for three years? When Roland moved to Austin from Seattle and began working at Austin Saengerrunde, she pondered that same question. “In Seattle, beer events are constant and seasonal just like beer itself. My first thought once I was living in Austin was, ‘Why is there not a winter beer festival, summer beer festival or even an Oktoberfest in Austin?’ It is the perfect way for breweries to showcase whatever beer they are brewing at the time,” says Roland. Working for Austin Saengerrunde allowed for the perfect opportunity to rectify the missing Oktoberfest “situation.” “I just knew that Scholz Garten and Saengerrunde Halle would be the best location--it is one of the oldest bier gartens in America!” says Roland. The Austin Saengerrunde’s roots run deep in German culture, the ideal connection to start an Oktoberfest. Forming in the mid 1800s by German settlers as a traditional German singing group, they first organized their singing society naming it the Saengerrunde. Today the Saengerrunde is the oldest ethnic group in Austin. When Scholz Garden was established as a beer garden in 1867, it became the preferred meeting place for the Saengerrunde group. Consisting of a dance hall, bowling alley, restaurant and beer garden, the Scholz Garden property was purchased by the Austin Saengerrunde in 1908. Currently the combined properties remain
under the stewardship of the Saengerrunde club allowing for its German heritage to be preserved and enjoyed. “I absolutely love my job!” exclaims Roland. “The Austin Saengerrunde has now become a bunch of Oma’s and Opa’s to me. Much of Austin had no idea who we were and we wanted to showcase that through music, food and of course, beer. I wanted to start something to show Austin how incredible this society is. It turned out the President of the Saengerrunde was looking to do the same. We partnered together to create AustOberfest and it won ‘Best New Food Event’ that first year. It was an incredible success!” This year’s Oktoberfest is expected to be the largest and most successful yet. Sponsored by Karbach, there will be five different kinds of German style beer for attendees to enjoy. Included in the price of your ticket is unlimited German-style sausage and sides from some of central Texas' best meat purveyors, German beer by Karbach Brewing Co., live music entertainment from Brave Combo, Minor Mishap and Czech Melody Masters, and the 17th Street Bier Garten and bowling alley. “We have some fun contests in store for you: stein holding (men and women), yodeling, costume, and air accordion. Last year we had Stein holding competition
such a demand for stein holding that we will be holding the competition every other hour from 3 to 11 p.m.,” says Roland. If you are new to AustOberfest, Roland suggests you dress up, come hungry, wear some comfortable shoes and be ready for a fun time. “I’d say that 75 percent of the people that attend the event dress up. I did not realize how many people had lederhosen, ladyhosen, dirndls and German attires in their closets. And you should definitely come hungry! It can be quite challenging to try all the sausage vendors before you run out of stomach room. You will also hear random yodeling and singing. We have a group that breaks out in beer drinking songs like ‘Ein Prosit.’ For more fun, drop by our bowling alley where you are able to bowl during the event,” Ronald suggests. “This year the event will continue into the late hours, and with the addition of 17th street, we will have more sausage vendors and shorter beer lines!” Ironically a search on Wikipedia for AustOberfest results in zero findings. But that’s the Austin way! We embrace a worldwide celebration and add some Austin flair. Enjoy this year’s Oktoberfest with our very own annual AustOberfest! AustOberfest.com

t’s a slice of Texas that just can’t be missed. Drive a few miles off Interstate 35 just past the San Marcos outlet malls, and you’ll discover Gruene (pronounced green), a historical district of New Braunfels. On weekends, Gruene attracts thousands of tourists who come to eat, play, shop, stay and above all, listen to music and dance. SINGING AND SWINGING
Gruene Hall opened in 1878 and is the oldest dance hall in Texas. In fact, the hall is only one of two that is in daily operation. The 6,000-square-foot dance hall still sports the original design with a high pitched tin roof, side flaps for open air dancing, a bar at the front, stage in the back and an outdoor garden. The music is hot and so is the venue (no air conditioning here) in which patrons stay cool by drinking ice cold beer, wine and soft drinks. You’ll hear singers and songwriters from the very famous to the not-yet-famous who take the stage daily for both free and paid shows. If you want to perfect your swing dancing, one-

All rooms are uniquely decorated and have their own entrance, private bathroom and porch. A little farther from the town center you’ll find Gruene Homestead Inn GrueneHomesteadInn.com (my personal favorite). This bed and breakfast is a collection of historic farm houses that sit on eight acres of an original German homestead. There are 22 rooms, a pool and hot tub, as well as a live music venue and watering hole, Tavern in the Green. The tavern features a full bar, pool tables, shuffleboard and a horseshoe pit and is located right next to the inn’s pool. A full breakfast is served daily. Other convenient places to stay include the Gruene Cottages GrueneCottages.com which consists of seven rock houses and four guest rooms; Gruene River Inn GrueneRiverInn.com, featuring 14 rooms; numerous condos on HomeAway and VBRO and more conventional hotels in New Braunfels. 20

“I was part of the team that presented our findings to the Federal Drug Administrator (FDA) and went through the process for FDA approval of 3D mammography,” Rose says. In 2013 the first study was published comparing 2D and 3D mammography on a large population. Rose and RIS were an integral part of this study. The findings have been astonishing. 3D mammography discovers lesions that 2D mammography reads as normal. In fact, the study found that some cancers are only seen on 3D. The study published showed a 37 percent reduction in false positives, meaning 37 percent fewer patients required additional testing. That means fewer call backs for patients, and less invasive testing. The study also had over 50 percent increase in detection of invasive cancers, aka the killing cancers. “3D exams find the lesions that are hiding," Rose explains. "For example, I had a patient in her early 40s whose 2D mammogram read negative, meaning she was clear. However, her 3D scan found lesions. Because of 3D mammography, we were able to see the aggressive lesion and remove it. She didn’t have to go through chemotherapy, radiation and multiple appointments. This new technology is life altering." There is a controversy among the medical community on screening younger women. “I believe it shouldn’t be a controversy at all,” Rose states. “Women in their 40s have more false positives, however with 3D technology, we can detect disease much better without disrupting our patients lives.” In the first six months that ABI was open, cancer was detected in 60 patients with an average age of 42. “As women age, the incidence
of breast cancers goes up, but the aggressiveness of these cancers goes down," says Rose. "Therefore, we have more time to catch, diagnose and treat them. Women in their 40s have less incidences of cancer, but a higher incidence of aggressive cancers. I strongly believe we do not have an alternative but to scan these women." Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield have recently approved the use of 3D mammography. With these two large entities embracing this technology, it is a matter of time before all insurance covers 3D mammography. “Due to our research with 3D mammography, ABI has a better understanding of how powerful it is and how to implement it. We have the 3D technology available, all women should make the choice to have a 3D mammogram,” says Rose.

Uncle Billy's Brewery COMBINING AWARD-WINNING BEER, GREAT FOOD AND AN EXPERIMENTAL ATTITUDE ARTICLE SHELLEY SEALE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY UNCLE BILLY'S Trevor Nearburg checking the brew process
A
Uncle Billy's beer bout a year ago, Trevor Nearburg was sitting at Uncle Billy’s Brewery and Smokehouse on Barton Springs and thinking to himself, “This place is perfect. This is everything I love about Austin — great beer, awesome barbecue, live music, dog friendly.” Nearburg, who had returned to Austin about two years prior after a career in finance at KPMG in New York, had rediscovered his love for brewing craft beer. A homebrewing hobby with brother Ross had turned into a full blown passion, and Nearburg was working as Assistant Brewer at Real Ale Brewing Company. But that day at Uncle Billy’s changed things. After chatting with owner Rick Engel and finding aligned philosophies on brewing great beer, Engel offered Nearburg the job of Head Brewer. “They wanted to bring someone new to the table,” Nearburg says. “Someone young who was willing to take risks.” Risk taking is something he definitely does with Uncle Billy’s brews — with great success. Take the Schützenfest, an unusual Berliner-Weisse style that is tart, light and smoky all at the same time. Nearburg admits that it’s an acquired taste, but is genuinely excited by this type of experimentation. “The sour and smoky blend together well. You wouldn’t think they would, but they do.” He often does no test batches of new beer recipes before throwing huge batches into process. “It’s very experimental in the brewery and I really enjoy that. I like using ingredients I’ve never used before. I like challenging myself.” 24

Trevor Nearburg with an Uncle Billy's brew
That sort of pioneering spirit is in the foundation of Uncle Billy’s. Engel opened Houston’s first brewpub since Prohibition in 1993, and went on to open Little Woodrow’s and Uncle Billy’s in Austin. He partnered with Christine Celis, who grew up in the business working with her father, Pierre, in Belgium before the two opened Celis Brewery, the first craft brewery in Austin, in 1991. In 2013, she launched Gypsy Collaborations with the goal of partnering with craft breweries such as Uncle Billy’s, to create unique beer recipes using American ingredients but with Belgian influence. The still-rare female presence on the microbrew scene is also felt with Uncle Billy’s Assistant Brewer, Daytona Celis — Pierre’s granddaughter. She is continuing the family legacy at Uncle Billy’s by brewing her grandfather’s original recipes that people want to taste again and again. In addition to the award-winning beer and smokehouse barbecue, Uncle Billy’s also offers a full menu from salads and burgers to starter plates such as the Pretzel & Sausage Board and Redneck Road Kill. In addition to the Schützenfest, Nearburg is planning some other seasonals for the fall and winter. "I base the recipe on anything from my mood that week to a random collaboration at the last minute," he says, adding that fans can definitely expect some winter themes including Rye and Belgian styles. “Working in a brewery every day puts smiles on our faces, and we hope our beers do the same for our customers,” Nearburg says. Rising country singer and Austin resident, Tessy Lou Williams, with band members Bryan Paugh (L) and Kenny Williams (R), as Tessy Lou and the Shotgun Stars.
Tessy Lou and the Shotgun Stars AS A RISING STAR IN TEXAS, TESSY LOU FOUND HER HOME IN AUSTIN ARTICLE VAL VALDEZ | PHOTOGRAPHY MATCHLESS EXPOSURE
T
essy Lou Williams was born with country music pulsing through her veins. As the daughter of Kenny and Claudia Williams, of the western band Montana Rose, she grew up in Willow Creek, Montana (pop. 150). However, a great deal of her childhood found Tessy Lou on the road and backstage at their shows. A gifted writer and musician since childhood, Tessy Lou started writing songs at age 15. After dropping out of college, she decided to try music. This prompted Kenny to take her on a visit to Nashville, which she liked, and Austin, which she loved. “I knew Austin is where I belong,” Tessy Lou says. In 2010, Tessy Lou, Kenny and friend Bryan Paugh all moved to Austin forming Tessy Lou and the Shotgun Stars. Slowly, they started to play throughout town at Saxon Pub, Threadgills, The Broken Spoke and Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse, her first gig. Now, they also frequently play
around the state in West Texas, Port Aransas and at private parties. Tessy Lou gorged herself on many types of music and singers, so it’s hard to label her style. But 'Roots Music’ comes closest. “My music is inspired by Americana and bluegrass, but the heart of what we do is country,” says Tessy Lou. Some of her song titles sound like classic country anthems, “Beer, Boobs and Whiskey” and “Cowboy Way,” and her music flows easily with a gift for exposing the heart of a song. “Everyone has had a broken heart, and love songs are easier to write,” says Tessy Lou. Her 2012 debut album, “Leaving Montana,” consists of original songs recorded live in a low-key way. But her 2015 album, “Somewhere In Texas” includes covers and original songs with higher production values. “This one is more in your face,” Tessy Lou says. Besides being a protective and loving father, Kenny plays bass in the band and is helping his daughter
live her dream. He and Tessy’s mom divorced, but says all three of their children were raised to believe that music is a craft. “In the American Idol culture it’s about fame and money, and we’ve lost sight of the beauty of making music for people,” Kenny says. He gives a lot of credit to Austin's supportive music scene for developing Tessy's talents. “Being in Austin around peers brings out the best in everyone.” Not surprisingly, Tessy's legion of fans keeps growing. “The eyes and ears of many people are on her right now,” says Jason Z. Guest, president of Guest Public. At only 25-years old, Tessy Lou exudes an air of strong, yet humble confidence, a tenacious work ethic and songwriting that radiates wisdom beyond her years. Her plans for the future are as big as the Montana country where she grew up. “I want people everywhere to hear our music,” says Tessy Lou. See her now. Tessy Lou is the real deal. Tessy Lou and the Shotgun Stars have performed at favorite local venues, like Saxon Pub and Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse.

Smooth and gracethe 2016 Audi A7. Let’s start with the exterior. The first thing ful best describes how the A7 drives. It has solid handling that will catch your eye is the arch of the roof line creating a without feeling too heavy, even though it weighs more than coupe-like profile that is very 'Don Drapperish.' One of my favorite design elements is the A7's when backing up the vehicle, the radio level drops to reduce hatchback allowing for easier loading of luggage and larger items. This is a genuine high-performance car with almost unreal acceleration reaching 0-60 in less than six seconds. The 2016 Audi A7 offers a choice of two engines: a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 (3.0T) and a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V6 (TDI). The supercharged, gasoline-fueled engine generates 333 horsepower and 325 poundfeet of torque, while the diesel TDI pumps out 240 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed Triptronic automatic transmission with Quattro all-wheel drive is standard on both models. Also impressive is the gas mileage for each engine. The A7 26

any noise distraction. This is such a sophisticated car that it removes some of the work of driving, so you can actually enjoy driving again. Like most people, I love comfort and ease and the A7 interior gives plenty of both. The dash is minimal and not cluttered with small dials. Instead, the A7 has large, easy to read dials. Audi's familiar Multi Media Interface controls audio, communication and navigation functions via a dash-mounted pop-up screen and a knob and buttons on the center console. A four-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable steering wheel with paddle shifters, leather upholstery and a sunroof are standard. The front seats offer heated eight-way power seats with a comfy four-way driver lumbar adjustment. The size of the backseat may cause a minor issue for passengers. Sitting three passengers in the back is doable as long as they are not tall, due to the sloped roof reducing rear headroom. As for the legroom, the front seats have plenty, while the backseat space is acceptable but not generous. The power of the A/C is evident as it quietly cools the interior in only a few minutes, a real bonus in Texas summers. Standard safety equipment includes anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, a blind-spot warning system, with eight air bags standard and two more available. The 2016 Audi A7 is available in two trim levels--Premium Plus and Prestige--for both the 3.0T and TDI engines. Most A7 options come bundled in various packages: the cold weather package, s line sport package, black optic package, driver assistance package and the 20-inch wheel package. With a price tag starting at $68,300, the Audi A7 is both luxurious transportation and a long term investment. Given its superior design, performance and endless user-friendly features, an owner can expect to get years of reliable, safe and elegant service from the A7. At the end of my test drive, I mistakenly gave my car keys to the sales manager and kept the A7 fob in my pocket. But that wasn’t a mistake, just a very big wish.

Pop-O-Treat! WORDS ALISSA PALLAN AND THE POPCORN BAR
T
he autumn season brings out witches, goblins and ghosts and one of the most favorite celebrations of the year: National Popcorn Poppin’ Month. For the child in all of us, Halloween will still rank among the highest in October celebrations giving us the perfect opportunity to blend these two festivities. With National Popcorn Poppin’ being a month-long event, you will have plenty of time to enjoy America’s most popular “poppable” snack, perhaps even at a neighborhood Halloween party! Grab a handful and you’re helping consume some of the 16 billion quarts Americans eat each year. Popcorn’s popularity is
partially due to its irresistible aroma and taste, but it’s also a food that’s long been a part of American culture associated with good times. Curious kids love watching the magical transformation from a hard seed to soft, fluffy snack. And everyone can appreciate that popcorn is a whole grain, providing carbohydrates and fiber to the diet, while naturally low in fat and calories. With all those reasons to love popcorn (as if you really needed them) why not scare up this frightfully good treat and share with your friends in our community. Recipes are compliments of the Popcorn Board, Popcorn.org.
