Lifestyle Letter

Home is where my heart is! H

ow blessed are we to live in a community of picturesque neighborhoods with homes and lawns and gardens that are well-maintained? Where people take pride in their homes? I find so much joy in living in a town where there are great parks and public spaces with fountains or public art and even parks for our dogs.

When I take a walk or jog around the neighborhood I love to notice the details about the homes I pass. Details I miss when I’m driving or riding in a car, such as the f lowers on the front porch or the annuals that f lourish in their gardens, the color of or decorations hanging on the front door, the neighborhood green spaces, and so on. Because I’m fortunate enough to work from home, I’m able to spend most of my time in the home my family has created. My home office is really just the corner of a room we weren’t using nine years ago when I needed to set up shop from home. I love being able to enjoy this space I’ve created for my family, and as strange as it may be to admit, I love being able to tidy it up when I need to take five from the office chair. We’ve worked hard to bring your our first-ever, home-themed issue and I think you’ll love every page. It was a joy to put together!

LEAWOOD PIONEER LIBRARY HOSTS “NERF BATTLE” It’s not everyday you see teenagers running around the library after hours shooting each other with Nerf guns. But that’s what happened one recent Friday night. The library invited teens ages 13-18 to the event, designed to bring kids into the library. Participants were served pizza and drinks prior to the Nerf Battle. The idea was the brainchild of the Young Adult 14

METROPOLITAN ORGANIZATION TO COUNTER SEXUAL ASSAULT (MOCSA) HELPS VICTIMS BECOME SURVIVORS AND THRIVERS ARTICLE EMMA BALL PHOTOGRAPHY ALEXIS COOK

W

ithout support, help and healing, the damage sexual abuse causes can be life long. Because of the work of one of Kansas City’s treasured organizations, victims here have much hope. The Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA)’s sole mission is to do everything they can to prevent these crimes from happening and to be there to offer support and hope when they do occur. The heart of the organization is a strong volunteer base comprised of many people who care deeply, often from a personal experience, or deep sense of compassion. This gives the hurting person a safe place where they feel understood and led by experienced people with an organization that is fully equipped to help them navigate the journey to healing and wholeness. MOCSA serves the entire metropolitan area, including seven counties: Jackson, Platte, Clay and Cass counties in Missouri; and Johnson, Wyandotte and Miami counties in Kansas. Last year, they served 63,000 people. 20

he statistics speak volumes: one in six women will be the victim of completed or attempted rape. One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused during childhood.

24-HOUR CRISIS LINE

MOCSA staff and trained volunteers are available to provide emotional support, crisis intervention, information and referrals, and problem solving to victims of sexual violence, and their significant others. Kansas: 913.642.0233 Missouri: 816.531.0233

SERVICES

This exceptional organization’s comprehensive service model is unique. Evolving since 1969, their services began as professionals from various aspects of the care spectrum (criminal justice, medical and health care) committed to addressing the needs of those who had been sexually assaulted. Later they launched an emergency hotline, focusing as a rape crisis center in the 1970s. In 1983, MOCSA expanded to encompass serving children and families affected by sexual abuse and violence. MOCSA’s services now touch on every aspect of the process—from prevention and education, to therapy, support and advocacy. Today they provide assistance in these areas: • Sexual Assault: Services for survivors of sexual assault are available to residents across the metro area. • Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse: Services for adult survivors are available to residents across the metro. • Child Sexual Abuse: Services for victims of child sexual abuse and their families are available for Missouri residents. • Outreach Counseling: In addition to services provided at their primary office location in midtown Kansas City, MO, they pro-

vide outreach counseling for adolescent and adult sexual assault victims in Overland Park; Kansas City, KS; Olathe and Paola. • Hospital Advocacy: MOCSA staff and volunteer advocates provide hospital advocacy at these locations. • Offender Services: They also provide specialized services to adolescent and adult offenders at off-site locations. EDUCATION AND PREVENTION

Their commitment to prevention has led to the creation of educational programs for middle and high school students. These programs help educate 25,000+ students each year in 30 area school districts. More than 10,000 younger children are reached through their numerous other projects, including Project Aware for pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students. Thanks to the staff, volunteers and supporters of MOCSA, victims of sexual violence in Kansas City have someone to walk with through the journey from victim to survivor, and ultimately have hope to live a thriving life. For more details and information about volunteering, donating or a wealth of resources, check out their website at MOCSA.org.

FAMILY OWNED COMPANY GIVES YOU THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS IN FLOORING ARTICLE LISA ALLEN | PHOTOGRAPHY SUSAN MOTLEY

M

ike Eddings and his staff could show you thousands of tile choices if you’re so inclined. But they’d rather not do that. They’d rather listen first, so they can understand what you need and what you want your space to look like. Then they’ll show you products and photos of previous projects, and walk you through the steps necessary to pick just the right flooring for you. “The choices can be overwhelming,” says Eddings, who owns Legacy Flooring with his brother Scott. “Products are constantly changing, and it can be mind-boggling to keep up with all the options that are out there.” What doesn’t change is the philosophy upon which Legacy Flooring is built: superior customer service, attention to detail, and onestop shopping. “We grew up here,” says Eddings. “We graduated from 24

Leawood Lifestyle | November 2015

Olathe schools and our kids are in Olathe schools. We’ve built our lives here, and we’ll be here for the rest of our lives. It’s important to us that customers tell their friends ‘Hey, you need to use these guys.’” There’s more than one element to Legacy Floorings’ business: there’s the commercial aspect, builder work, and residential customers. If you’ve walked into a McDonald’s, the new Austin’s in Olathe, or a Pot Belly Pig or a QDoba restaurant, you’ve likely walked on a Legacy Flooring floor. Other recent commercial projects have been the new DeBruce Center, home to Naismith's original Rules of Basketball; the Spencer Museum of Art; and the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house, all at the University of Kansas. The business creates countless custom walk-in showers and high-end exterior tile decks and offers heated tile flooring and solid surface countertop options like granite and quartz. Builders and their customers go to Legacy Flooring for options on their construction projects. In addition to commercial projects, the team at Legacy Flooring works on an average of 10 new construction houses per week, and about a half-dozen residential projects. “Floor covering is the third largest purchase a person makes in his or her lifetime, right behind a house and a car," says Eddings. "That’s a big deal. It requires time and information to make the right decisions. We welcome clients in to our showroom by appointment so the focus is totally on them during that initial hour

or two. Our designers keep up with current trends and they’re always on top of what’s new, so they can help navigate the choices available and answer questions about how those trends translate to a client’s design aesthetic and home. Coming into the showroom and meeting us is an important part of what sets us apart from other stores,” says Eddings. “Whoever a customer deals with at the beginning is who they work with

through the entire process. We know that being welcomed into someone’s home isn’t something to take lightly. The majority of our installers work directly for us, and there are always two to three installers on a crew. They drive our company van and wear our company shirts, because we trust them. And we know our clients trust us, because they leave us their keys and garage openers. That’s something we respect, and we take that trust seriously.” Eddings started in the flooring business as an installer in the mid 1980s before deciding to open a store with his two brothers and their dad. Then he and his brother Scott opened Legacy Flooring in 2010. Now Scott’s wife Jodi manages the office and the brothers employ a staff of experienced designers, sales professionals and installers. “It’s satisfying to create and design new projects,” says Eddings. “I’ve been in the business since high school but it never gets boring because there’s always a new project to work on.” Learn more at LegacyFlooring1.com or call the showroom at 913.780.6060

he Communities of River Ridge, located at 162nd Terrace and Kenneth Road, may just be one of the best-kept secrets in town. At one of the highest elevations in Johnson County, the expanding development boasts spectacular terrain, acres of mature trees, and some gorgeous homes. According to Lettiann Southerland, River Ridge Communities specialist, they are in the last phase of building now. “Our final phase is called The Enclave of Sunset Hills,” says Southerland. “A number of spec homes are under construction and remaining lots are going fast. Community amenities include a pool, tennis courts, two stocked fishing lakes and a play area. And it’s in the coveted Blue Valley School District.” Some homes have view of the Aubrey vineyard directly to the south of The Enclave. Models are open Wednesday through Sunday, noon - 5 p.m.

Elegance Classic A TOUCH OF

Extensive remodel adds beauty and comfort to area home.

LIVING ROOM

A gathering spot for the family to watch TV, ample seating was the primary objective in this long and narrow space. After a few style changes, this hearth room is the perfect place for the entire family to comfortably relax at the end of the day. A gray flannel sectional partners perfectly with the warm gray walls while the wing chair and accompanying ottoman, donned in neutral fabric, is the go-to spot to cozy up and settle in for an evening of popcorn and movies or to just lose one’s self in the pages of a good book. The two-tone shag rug invites barefoot fun and also serves as the place for the family dog to catch up on some napping during the day. 30

etting this Overland Park home into enviable shape required a keen focus on attention to detail while simultaneously painting the bigger picture. While previously lacking in apparent form and function, the kitchen, family room and guest bathroom all currently offer an inviting and relaxing ambiance, with a decided touch of class and elegance coupled with supreme comfort and ease of use. The client was thrilled with the final product, noting not only the reliability and professionalism of Arlene Ladegaard and the design team at Design Connection, Inc., but also applauding the lasting value and superior results of this project. “The selections are classically elegant and will add beauty and comfort to my home for years to come. I look forward to completing the remaining rooms with Design Connection, Inc.’s assistance,” says the homeowner.

KITCHEN

To get the ball rolling in the kitchen, the formerly awkward island and disproportionate pantry welcomed a new faรงade. Keeping the pantry intact, only the doors were replaced and were changed to a darker color for a dramatic effect while the newly-installed kitchen cabinets were adorned with a new warm gray color accented with a coffee bean glaze that partner well with the new island. Eye-popping state-of-the-art appliances joined forces with a brilliant granite mosaic backsplash highlighted by warm gray quartz countertops. Rounding out the welcoming vibe are the transitional dining table and chairs, all boasting a dark finish that work in effortless style with the island and pantry. CONTINUED >

A TOUCH OF CLASSIC ELEGANCE

BATHROOM

No longer a room with a closed door, this powder room has been completely transformed as a crown jewel in the home, perhaps offering the best seat in the house, as the view is spectacular. The former builder-grade and uninspiring golden oak cabinet, plain mirror and standard light fixture were gutted and replaced with the newly styled dark coffee bean stained cabinet, and the new mosaic tile proves to be a harmonious partner with the tall mirror, adding a feeling of a larger and more dramatic space. The Kohler slate gray sink, single lever faucet and slate gray finish of the toilet offer a sassy and fun complement to the new wallpaper and metallic paper for the ceiling. Together, these elements provide a feeling of not only added dimension and height to the space, but also encourage an open door policy when not in use!

32

Leawood Lifestyle | November 2015

HEARTH ROOM

The initial request of the homeowner was to place a TV over the fireplace and then add furnishings to create a beautiful look. With careful space planning, this cozy area now comfortably seats five people by incorporating the right sized furniture made of fabrics designed for consistent use while still maintaining a great look. The linen down filled pillows add a soft touch while the wool area rug sets the overall tone for the room. Opting for a warm gray color on the walls, the fireplace was perfectly set off by the java finish to complement the kitchen.

TAKE CAMPERS BACK TO A SIMPLER TIME

Vintage campers decorate their sites so they feel like home.

ori Thompson grew up camping. “When I was eight or nine years old we toured every summer in our family’s teardrop truck camper,” she says. “I remember the clicking of the curtain clips and the coffee-can potty. I have happy memories of good times.” Those memories are a big reason why Thompson, of Leawood, now owns a vintage 1959 Oasis camp trailer that is just 13 feet long. She calls it Toto’s Tin Can and it is painted with brightly colored sunflowers and a dancing girl created by Lisa Gentile 36

of Phony Faux in Parkville. Thompson takes it to vintage travel trailer events such as the one held last August at the KOA campground in Branson, Mo., where I met her. “It’s reliving a simpler time for me,” says Thompson. “I can sit, color, read or go for a swim.” Thompson and her husband, Vernon, have been camping as long as they have been married. In addition to her Oasis, they have a reproduction of a 1961 Shasta Airflyte that they call Flying Monkey and a contemporary 27-foot trailer named Big Sal.

Steve and Rhonda White from Shreveport, Louisiana, have a 1964 Airstream Bambi II. Rhonda worked every weekend for three months polishing the exterior.

Simmons completely rebuilt the Spartan’s interior himself.

Thompson belongs to a group called Sisters on the Fly (SistersOnTheFly.com). With 200 to 300 members in the Heartland and more than 6,500 worldwide, Sisters delight in being self-sufficient. They gather to enjoy socializing, shopping, fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, hunting antiques or wine tasting. Vintage trailers are all the rage these days, and interest is exploding, spurred on in part because of TV shows such as Flipping RVs on the Great American Country channel but also because enthusiasts are enthralled with these rolling time machines that hark back to earlier days. And don’t underestimate how a tiny space appeals to our nesting instinct. Call it the coziness factor. Tin Can Tourists (TinCanTourists.com) is a club for vintage motor coaches and trailers, and Vintage Camper Trailers is a magazine dedicated to the same. Because most vintage trailers are quite small, owners usually create an outdoor space covered by brightly a colored awning. Some put down carpet and some decorate with signs, flowerpots, tables and period knickknacks. A string of lights create a welcoming ambiance at night. Chris Simmons of Pleasant Hill and his wife Kristy painstakingly restored a 1949 Spartan Manor and its polished aluminum skin glistens. His two-year restoration included repairing several badly damaged exterior aluminum panels, re-skinning the doors and completely rebuilding the interior in a style that might best be described as Art Deco with a contemporary twist. Blond wood paneling covers the walls and cabinetry, all designed by Simmons who is a creative director by profession. He credits friends Jeff Wilson, Jim Huseby and Bob Schumacher for making this project come to completion. CONTINUED >

VINTAGE TIME TRAVELERS

(CONTINUED)

Lori Thompson calls her 1959 Oasis travel trailer Toto’s Tin Can. Mike Breton from Theodosia, Mo., restored this 1946 Angelus while keeping it as original as possible. Its excellent condition is due to the fact that it had a house built around it for several years.

Spartan Aircraft Trailer Coaches, made by the Spartan Aircraft Company of Tulsa from 1946 to 1961, are often called the Cadillac of camp trailers. They are desirable because their Art Deco shape, build quality and the fact that they were made in much smaller numbers than Airstream. Spartan capitalized on the aircraft technology of the time by using high-end materials such as Lexan windows and an aluminum skin that was riveted together like the monocoque structure of an airplane. Simmons, who has been going to car shows since he was 15, explains that a vintage camper event is like a car show but more fun. “It’s like having a great car, but living in it,” he says. Many campers are do-it-yourself folks who have restored or rebuilt the interiors of their trailers and they love to show off their handiwork. The work often reflects the personality of its owner. In 2014, the Branson KOA had 40 campers for its vintage weekend but this year there were 70. They expect perhaps twice as many next year. 38

Field Trip

of a Lifetime FALL IN LOVE WITH KANSAS CITY FROM THE AIR WITH KC COPTERS PREMIER HELICOPTER SERVICES ARTICLE KENDRA MATHEWSON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

“I

t’s like flying a magic carpet,” says pilot Johnny Rowlands, his comment delivered to our ears through headphones during some of our staff’s introductory helicopter flight over Johnson County. We may even have been passing 700 feet above our Metcalf offices at the time. Rowlands owns and operates KC Copters, a fleet of six helicopters here in Kansas City. He is known to Kansas Citians for guiding us through traffic each day from his perch above the roadways, covering breaking news and keeping us safe from tornadoes with his helicopter storm chasing. Helicopter flight is incomparable to anything except experiences only our imaginations can conjure, like the night-time dreams of flying like superman, or picturing a magic carpet ride in books and movies. An airplane is too insulated and large to offer comparison. A hang glider or parachute do not compare because they lack total control by the driver/rider. A helicopter defies gravity, moving to the will of its pilot. It is simultaneously adventurous and romantic. The cockpit is intimate. You sit inside a transparent bubble encompassed by a circumference of windows that evoke a high-tech, science fiction-y feel and provide a panoramic vista of the world around and beneath you. Liftoff and movement through the air is a little on the daring side of transportation. You feel it.

Leawood Lifestyle | November 2015

I’m going to hold myself back as a writer here—I don’t want to spoil your own experience, because you must have one. I’ll stop short of describing that phenomenal view, so that you can create your own words for it when you’re up there yourself. But see this as an invitation to fall in love with our beautiful city in a whole new way, from a whole new perspective. “Fly with someone you know,” is a phrase you’ll hear at KC Copters, because the intimacy and adventure of a helicopter ride require a level of trust in your pilot and the company. KC Copters and Johnny Rowlands merit that trust. Kansas Citians know Rowlands through his decades of award-winning work with local television stations as a pilot and reporter. And he is one of the most experienced helicopter pilots around. In 40 years flying in our area, Rowlands has logged 25,000 incident-free hours. By Malcolm Gladwell’s standard (it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in a field), that makes Rowlands a master’s master at helicopter piloting. (Thus, KC Copters also runs a training school at their home base.) He is also a certified tour operator, meaning he and the company have committed to the highest standard of safety. Our helicopter ride with Rowlands at the helm was exhilarating because we knew we were in the hands of a highly experienced expert, and his friendly, engaging personality was enjoyable to be with.

“I want to help create a meaningful event our guests will talk about their whole lives,” says Rowlands, who certainly accomplished that for our crew. “Safety is everything, and we bury it in fun,” he says. “We are caretakers of the space between you and the ground. Our entire mission is to eliminate risk.” They do that by flying the most reliable helicopters, babying the engines so that

they are maintained at the highest standards. “What separates us from other operators is how we run our engines and take care of the aircraft.” They also hire extremely knowledgeable and experienced staff, and cultivate an environment of friendly humor, gentlemanly decorum and consummate hospitality, executed by the flawless teamwork and contagious camaraderie of KC Copters personnel.

“My standard is to treat our guests the way I want to be treated,” Rowlands says. That’s a high standard coming from this professional. At this point, can you picture yourself buckled in to the cockpit? Imagine the feel of the headphones on your head to cover the swooshing sound of the rotor above? Hear Rowlands familiar voice in your ears… “Clear. All right, here we go.”

Driver’s Notebook

The Lexus RC 350 is a High-Styled Sport Coupe ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

T

he 2015 Lexus RC 350’s 306-horsepower V-6 delivers a satisfying kick in the pants, the handsomely proportioned coupe body exudes performance and the cockpit-style interior surrounds you with comfort. But the “spindle” grille that looks a bit like a scowling catfish leaves me cold. Variations on this face now appear on nearly every Lexus model in one form or another as part of the company’s design language. I presume the look is intended to appeal to a younger audience and perhaps help Lexus overcome past criticism that its cars lacked a sporty enough character. Lexus calls the RC 350’s styling “audacious,” but I think the grille disturbs the elegant lines that are carried throughout the rest of the vehicle. Would it stop me from buying one? Probably not, because so much of the car is right. There’s no doubt the RC 350 turns heads, as I found out after driving it for a week. I received several thumbs-up waves from folks on the street so perhaps I’m one of the few who thinks the grille is overdone. The long-hood, short-trunk profile is archetypical sport coupe in the way it emphasizes the power of the engine. The scoops next to the grille and the faux vents in the back fenders are obviously only for decoration but bother me less than the grille. Many of the design cues came from the out-of-production LFA supercar that had a price of $375,000. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe starts at $42,790. It has an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shifters on the steering column. The all-wheel-drive that would be much better suited to winter climates begins at $45,025. It has a six-speed automatic. An F Sport version starts at $47,875 for rear-wheel drive and $49,705 for all-wheel drive. The F Sport was created for enthusiasts who want items such as variable suspension, Lexus Dynamic Handling with rear-wheel steering and variable-ratio steering. The F Sport gets a unique texture in the grille and 19-inch wheels.

42

Leawood Lifestyle | November 2015

Crisp handling is one of the RC 350’s main attributes. While not as performance-oriented as the F Sport, it still responds as if it knows what you have in mind. The chassis platform is a mix of GS and IS sedan segments and it is stiff and tight. The ride is not overly harsh. The driver can select Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow driving modes. In many respects, the interior of the RC 350 reminded me of the IS 250 sedan. The instrument panel looks somewhat similar, as do the controls. The deep bucket seats fit me perfectly. On vehicles equipped with navigation, a clever touchpad on the center console uses tap, pinch and flick gestures to control audio, navigation and other systems. Bluetooth connectivity for telephone and audio streaming is standard. The RC’s blind-spot monitor not only alerts the driver to cars alongside but also to cars that are approaching in adjacent lanes. The rearview camera also has cross-traffic alert that is very useful for backing out of parking lot spaces. WARRANTY Four years or 50,000 miles, with a six-year, 72,000mile powertrain warranty. PRICE The base price of the test car was $42,790.Options included blind-spot monitor, rearview camera, navigation, fog lamps, parking assist, special paint and moonroof. The sticker price was $48,450. 2015 LEXUS RC 350

Engine: 3.5-liter, 306-horsepower V-6 Transmission: Eight-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive Wheelbase: 107.5 inches Curb weight: 3,748 pounds Base price: $42,790 As driven: $48,450 MPG rating: 19 in the city, 28 on the highway

THIS TIGER SEES THE

P sitive Side OF LIFE

Joe and Senior Jeff Gurley

ARTICLE CHARLES REDFIELD | PHOTOGRAPHY CHLOE BREAU

“I

was born at 28 weeks,” says Joe. “I was meant to be here to make a difference.” Joe Schuchardt is confined to a wheelchair, but that hasn’t stopped him. Blue Valley Athletic Director Matt Ortman will tell anyone who asks that Joe is the biggest Tiger sports fan. The football team named him a co-captain for the first football game at home against Shawnee Mission Northwest. He went out to the center of the field for the coin toss before the game with the other four captains. “I was honored and blessed beyond belief that they chose me,” he says. “I felt so much a part of the team.” The team also gave him a jersey. “I asked Joe if he played football, what number would he be,” says Head Football Coach Eric Driskell. “He thought about it for a bit and decided he would be number two. “I was puzzled because I couldn’t think of a famous person that wore number two. So I asked him why he chose number two. He

said it is because he is never first at anything. My heart sank, thinking this is a sad story. Then Joe explained the reason he is not first is because his puts God, his family, and his friends before himself. This is the kind of young man he is.” The football players appreciate Joe and his enthusiasm for the team. “I have known Joe for a while and he is simply a great person,” says senior quarterback Colton McCumber. “I have never met a nicer person in my life.” Senior defensive end Jeff Gurley adds, “The greatest thing about Joe is that he doesn’t feel sorry for himself. He is always trying to better those around him and make other people happy. He is one of the most thoughtful people I know.” “His enthusiasm and approach to life is something we all look up to,” says senior linebacker Jake Watkins, “He is really part of the team and we wouldn’t want to have anyone else by our side.” Joe is involved with all sports at Blue Valley plus he volunteered at a camp called Camp Barnabas in Monette, Mo., during the summer months. “It is a camp for kids with disabilities and their siblings,” says Joe. “This camp is very dear to my heart. I was the chaplain at this camp.” Schuchardt enjoys his time with the football team. “I have loved every single minute no matter if we win or lose,” he says. “I remember when it was pouring rain at a BV district game. My dad kept asking if I wanted to leave but I wasn’t leaving for anything. Superintendent Trigg was amazed at my fortitude. We won the game by the way. CONTINUED >

The young man is enjoying his time at Blue Valley High School. “I was born to be a Tiger,” he says. “Mr. Bacon, the principal at BV, always says ‘It’s a great day to be a Tiger,’ and I couldn’t agree with him more. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else for high school. “It is the best school in the country. BV has always been there for me. Everyone has accepted me with my disability and yet treated me like a normal person. “Mr. Bacon has sets a great example for kids like me to succeed,” he continues. “I appreciate the opportunity to learn. They have given me respect and dignity. I will always hold BV close to my heart.” Schuchardt has plans for after high school. “After graduation, I would like to attend the University of Missouri,” he says. “I want to pursue a degree in social work. Home Matters

The Impact of Window Treatments on the Big Picture ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

he first thing that impacts mood is the ambience of the space you enter. Whether preparing your home for a quick and successful sale, or refreshing your surroundings as an update, window treatments are a major factor in altering your space and mood. How you decide to dress your windows can lift or destroy your ambience. A refreshing new look in your home adds energy to your environment and function as well. Function is a huge factor in selecting the correct window dressing. For example, if you wish to cover windows in a media room, selecting a black-out product would be a priority. This might also apply to your teen’s bedroom. In contrast, a sunroom needs to be light and airy with good visibility. If privacy is important you’ll want to consider products that provide more coverage while adding a finished look to your room. The personality of the homeowner is also important to consider when selecting window products. What is your style? Selecting the right window covering will help you feel at home

and relax in your space. You need a design consultant who will listen to your needs and help you select the best quality window coverings for your home and will help create a comfortable place that gives you the space to relax and revive. When ordering custom products that are not returnable, insist on professional measuring of your windows. And when it comes to installation, the final step in the equation, professional installers with experience with the products you’ve ordered will make sure your new window coverings are safely installed so they can give you years of enjoyment. BEST-KEPT SECRETS FOR BUYING, SELLING AND CREATING A HOME WRITTEN BY LETTIANN SOUTHERLAND

W

hen Lettiann Southerland first arrived in Kansas City, she was desperately homesick. Leaving her home and family in Pennsylvania was a little more difficult than she believed it would be. Like many of us who have faced relocation away from our roots, she missed the family dinners, the wine and appetizers under the grape arbor, the laughter and the closeness of her family. Southerland, a successful realtor, looked for a way that she could turn her homesickness and memories into something that could last a lifetime. She and her brothers grew up learning about food, appreciating food and that dinner was more of an event than just another meal. So she decided to collect all of those recipes from her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins before it was too late. She set out to collect them and then share them with her family so that they could later be shared with younger members of the family. Southerland has successfully taken two very special areas of her life and combined them in a book of real estate buying and selling tips along with delicious family recipes, with the hope that they will enrich your life in your quest for a home that cooks. Parting Thoughts

WORDS DENISE SNODELL

W

ith every shower I took, I experienced the sensation of stepping into a time capsule. When we bought our relatively not-old house, I realized the master bathroom had curious touches of early 80s aesthetics. For instance, it was wrapped in ugly accent tile. I convinced myself the room had enough classic elements, but when I showered, the offending ceramic stripe was eye level. Through the fog of steam and shampoo suds, I stared at it every…single…day. I lived with THAT COLOR for years. Otherwise, the bathroom was spacious and functional. And there were many other pressing homeowner moles to whack— failing kitchen appliances, wood rot, bursting water heater, leaky roof. I could go on. Then, it happened. On a random day my husband and I dared to look at our bathroom objectively. We both cracked like old grout. The caulk was having an ugly contest with the tiles. The vaulted ceiling had been blemished way too long with a souvenir water stain, courtesy of our previous roof. (We stopped looking up when that happened—a handy homeowner trick.) Running parallel to the stain was track lighting we finally admitted was another 80s tribute. Again, I could go on. The situation was beyond DIY. We found a contractor. He agreed our bathroom was physically wearing out. The tired paint. The sputtering faucets. How was the shower not leaking? On the style front, we were thankful this man was too polite to outwardly gag at our Bon Jovi dressing room mirror lights and throwback cabinetry stain. I was almost embarrassed to show him the space. It was the permed mullet of bathrooms. 58

Leawood Lifestyle | November 2015

I have always recognized home design can be as fickle and trendy as clothing. Each decade has its cringe inducers. With that in mind, our remodeling decisions, from faucets to tiles to light fixtures, had to be “timeless.” We were thinking about the future. “Now” or “fun” or “punchy” elements were verboten. We chose whites and creams, with touches of grays and silvers. We aimed for eternal finishes. All clean, soothing and subtle. But several salespeople commented, “So you’re going for the spa look?” That was scary. Suddenly we had a look. We didn’t want a look. We were aiming for classic. We wanted this whole area to transform into the little black dress of bathrooms. (Albeit in hues of whites and grays.) As I write this, I am in that anxious lull between completing our painfully detailed selections and the actual parade of painters, electricians and tile guys. I have no idea how the room will turn out. I have a vision, but frankly, I’m shaking like a paint can in a Sherwin Williams store. I fear what might happen. The moment our spackle sets and the paint dries, a new era of bathroom style will emerge. It will be the opposite of what we selected. Any idea of classic will be shattered. There will be nothing but neon colors and sparkling hologram towel racks. Suppliers are going to develop synthetic fur sinks. Pfister will unveil horizontal shower pods and flying drone faucets. I just know it. Timelessness itself will become a thing of the past. Within weeks, we’ll be brushing our teeth in a dated bathroom.
