Editor’s Letter
Happy fall, all! I
t’s the MOST wonderful time of the year… in my humble opinion. I love it when I get to pull out the sweatshirts and sweaters that have been ignored during the months that are our humid summers. My perfect fall day is when the temperatures are crisp enough to allow me to wear my favorite jeans, but not so cool that I can’t let my toes enjoy the comfort of flip flops. At Lifestyle Publications, we strive to bring you the good news of our community. Our company motto is “Inspired by Community” and we take those words seriously. We are inspired by you, our neighbors. We live and work and dine in this community, too, and it’s a privilege and an honor to bring you this magazine each and every month. We’ve made some subtle but impressive improvements to our website and electronic distribution over the past few months. I know that when you receive a magazine in the mail, especially one that you don’t subscribe to, there may be little motivation to visit the company’s website. But if you know someone who would like to read this little gem each month, please tell them about the free email distribution of the magazine. We are growing our readership and distribution each week thanks to this new offering. And since we’ve been at this for several years now, we have some plans to shake things up a bit in the near future. We hope you’ll notice and enjoy the little changes we’re making to the magazine here and there. One of the new items on our company-wide to-do list is our first-ever Lifestyle Reader’s Choice awards. We plan to give our wonderful readers and advertisers a chance to nominate and vote for some of the best service providers in our community. Please take a moment to log on to LeawoodLifestyle.com to nominate and then vote for a few of our neighbors. We plan to celebrate the winners in a couple of months. Voting will be open until the end of November and then we’ll tally the votes. Enjoy this perfect weather, neighbors. And I’ll see you around town!

Troop 459 Celebrates Ten Eagle Scouts B
oy Scout Troop 459 recently celebrated the advancement of 10 Eagle Scouts at Colonial Presbyterian Church in Overland Park. The rank of Eagle Scout is achieved by less than four percent of Scouts. To become an Eagle Scout, a boy must earn 22 merit badges, serve in troop leadership roles, and conceive, plan and execute a service project that benefits his church, school or community. Troop 459 currently has 312 young men who have earned the rank of Eagle Scout and are proud to announce the advancement of these new Eagle Scouts. Andrew Michael Darlington, son of Scott and Erica Darlington, is a junior at Kansas City Christian School. Andrew’s Eagle Project involved replacing railroad ties around a playground at Kansas City Christian School. In addition, he built two benches around a baseball cage at the school. Joshua Scott Darlington, son of Scott and Erica Darlington, is a junior at Kansas City Christian School. Joshua’s Eagle Project involved replacing railroad ties around a section of the school playground. He also planted new trees as part of the project. The project beneficiary was Kansas City Christian School. Eric James Gawlick, son of Tom and Gina Gawlick, is a sophomore at Blue Valley Northwest. Eric’s Eagle Project involved constructing an outdoor shed for Colonial Presbyterian Church. The project involved leveling the terrain, laying a concrete foundation, and building and roofing the shed. Luke Jerome Gawlick, son of Tom and Gina Gawlick, is a sophomore at Blue Valley Northwest. His Eagle Project involved building community park benches for Colonial Presbyterian Church. The benches will help contribute to a community gathering area next to the sand volleyball court. Nicholas Mettee Gray, son of Tom and Toni Gray, graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas in May. Nick’s Eagle Project beneficiary was HeadStart of Shawnee Mission. He organized a drive to collect books, educational toys, diapers, and other necessities for HeadStart. Adam David Harris, son of David and Debbie Harris, is a junior at Blue Valley Northwest. His project involved working with the Public Works department for the city of Overland Park to promote and communicate the importance of soil conservation and protecting the environment from harmful chemicals. He led a team who applied stencils to storm drains to emphasize the importance of not dumping chemicals into the city water system. Additionally, he collected soil samples from the neighborhood surrounding South Lake in Overland Park. Carter Wallace Howes, son of Craig and Caren Howes, is a senior at Blue Valley North. His project involved building a retaining wall 20

on the side of a dirt bridge with railroad ties. Railroad ties were also used to level the top of the surface. The conservation project benefited the area by limiting erosion. His project was part of a new road that was built over a creek at Camp Shalom, in La Cygne, Kansas. This camp is a non-profit camp serving inner city youth from the metro area. Jacob Thomas Linville, son of Randy and Debbie Linville, is a junior at Kansas City Christian School. His project involved renovation of the swing set playground at his school. It was an ambitious and extensive project that involved replacing rotten railroad ties with new recycled rubber timbers, the removal of pea gravel, laying down of heavy duty weed mat and topping the area with playground mulch to make the area safer and more useful for the elementary students. Ross Wesley Unruh, son of James and Jana Unruh, is a junior at Kansas City Christian School. Ross’ Eagle Project involved building a set of light duty shelves in a caring ministry donations barn to help organize and store donated items. Derek James Walters, son of Layne and Colleen Walters, is a junior at Olathe East. Derek’s Eagle Project involved creating a donation drive for Kansas City Pet Project. He also built a small, free library for the KC Pet Project.

This quick and non-invasive procedure can be performed on site and permanently reduces underarm sweat in two treatments, three months apart. “Clients can see up to a 95 percent reduction in underarm sweat after undergoing mira-Dry,” notes Chambon. “This system 22

delivers controlled electromagnetic energy where the underarm sweat glands reside. The sweat glands are then heated through this source and completely eliminated. This process also kills the glands that produce that underarm smell.” Performed under local anesthesia, patients may feel sensations of warmth and pressure, but the lasting results are superior to alternative methods of treating underarm sweat, such as antiperspirants, which are temporary and sometimes toxic, or invasive surgery to remove the sweat glands, which potentially carries significantly greater risks. Reflections Body Solutions is also the only center in town to offer the FDA approved Profound, a procedure that provides a face lift without surgical intervention. It immediately delivers 100 percent controlled heat energy for maximum effectiveness, tightening the skin while simultaneously creating adDr. Greg Chambon ditional volume and elasticity. Using micro-needle electrodes, Profound penetrates the skin and releases heat for a specific amount of time at a precise temperature and depth. The high energy causes the body to create new elastin, collagen
and hyaluronic acid. Profound is far more significant than other treatments out there for the face, neck and jawline, as it lifts, tightens and adds volume. “This literally delivers energy deeper to get to the elastin layer so far more significant results are obtained,” says Chambon. Clients may notice some swelling, bruising and redness a few days after the procedure, but results can be seen in as little as three weeks. “While the results are not immediate, this is just a one-time treatment which will ultimately deliver up to six months of continued tightening, a more lifted appearance, firmer and smoother skin, and noticeable wrinkle reduction,” explains Chambon. All consultations are complimentary at Reflections Body Solutions, and clients are always ensured the safest treatments designed to deliver maximum results. “I have been extremely selective on the treatments I purchase for our clients,” states Chambon. “Our clients are treated by fully trained and certified staff for a safe, effective and positive outcome.”

Smartphone Sommelier OVERWHELMING BEER AND WINE OPTIONS MEET THEIR MATCH IN SOPHISTICATED APPS ARTICLE CHRISTOPHER CLARK
C
hances are that no matter where you live in the city, you’re never too far from a cavernous liquor shop. You know these booze behemoths, where aisles of bottles extend like row crops stacked tall with microbrewed beers, endless wine varietals and all manner of spirits. Choice is a great thing, until a quick run for tonight’s party becomes a befuddling chore. But you have a smartphone. And you know what comes next: There’s an app for that. Both the iOS and Android app ecosystems are overflowing with ways to tame the tumult of tippling. Sophisticated databases, search algorithms and even your own photos catalog the latest beers and wines, and what your imbibing friends are saying about them. Many apps feature wonderful photo capabilities that allow you to snap a picture and instantly see user reviews that can remove the risk of buying that beer you’ve never heard of. Or that beguilingly-labeled wine that was all design and not worth your two bucks, Chuck. Because wine before beer, never fear, let’s first take a look at some apps to score that perfect vino. Drync is one of the wine app genre’s most elegant entries. Use your phone’s camera to scan a label to get information, community ratings or add the picture to your wine wish list. You can also buy wine directly through the app and have it shipped to your home. As you build out your collection, Drync handily catalogs your titles, tasting notes, cost, and any information you might need should you want to buy again. Vivino shares many of Drync’s capabilities but throws in a robust system for managing information about favorite wines. Think of it as a cloud-based cellar where the name, variety and tasting notes are waiting for you. It also has a recommendation feature that intuits your preferences and suggests wines to match. 24
Leawood Lifestyle | October 2015
WineGlass doesn’t solve a party problem as much as it handles something many of us can relate to: a restaurant wine menu that might as well be in Greek. That red may have smoky notes, but will it pair with what you’re hungry for? WineGlass tries to cut the guesswork by allowing you to take a picture of the menu and turning that list into interactive information about the wines, what others think and how they pair. Now that you’re a smartphone sommelier, let’s turn you into a beer snob. Suds meet social in an app called Untappd. The app connects with your friends to find what’s good and new. Ratings, a wish-list function and the app’s gorgeous design score high with users. Picky Pint borrows a page from the wine apps by letting you take a photo of a beer menu, or labels at the store, to unleash a torrent of information about ratings, recommendations and tasting notes. Even the beer’s bitterness is scored so you know what you’re getting into. If you’re ready to overthink the way you buy beer, give Picky Pint a look. Another app that can tell you everything about that obscure microbrew you’re about to buy is Beer Buddy. It’s arguably the most information-packed app, with a deep beer catalog that hooks into the well-regarded review site RateBeer.com. Scan barcodes for more information, bookmark favorite brews and rate your buys. Now, here’s one more that’s neither wine nor beer. Highball (iOS only) is a brilliantly designed app that allows you to collect cocktail recipes and share them with friends. The app organizes recipes as cards, allowing you to collect others’ recipes and create your own. The app is delightfully designed and dead-simple to use. Some starter recipes offer a feel for how the cards are laid out, and it won’t be long before you’re creating personalized cards with your own twists on popular cocktails.

Many people look forward to fall after a long summer and the idea of snuggling up in sweaters is welcoming. Faulkner's Ranch is a place that comes alive in the fall with beautiful rolling hills, yard games, a pumpkin patch, pony rides and more. Gooey s'mores made with chocolate chip cookies are a treat that always reminds me of fall campfires. This Missouri ranch hosted our fall festival photo shoot complete with amazing Missouri-based artisans who have taken the idea of handcrafted to a new level. Hand-poured candles from McCalls Candles scented the air, while Top Shelf Bartending served libations from Ozark Distillery and 360 Vodka. A hand-crafted fall wreath by Little Lady Crafts welcomed us and added the perfect touch of color and whimsy to the front door. Custom embroidered napkins from The Gartermaker by Monde Design added some stitched fall flare to our table setting. These beautiful images captured by Robin Erisman PhotograCONTINUED > phy help us usher in the fall season.

Local experts offer tips to navigate the aisles of your favorite liquor store. ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ANNE POTTER RUSS

utumn is here, and we’re all gearing up for some comfort food, entertaining friends and family during the holidays, watching football, and complementing our meals with great wine and beer. Often confused by the plethora of choices when perusing the liquor aisles of the store? Tend to judge a bottle by its label when choosing something to drink? No more! We consulted our friends at Gomer’s, and we’ve got some great ideas for your dining and hospitality needs.
THE BOTTOM LINE ON WINE Wine aficionado Michael Querrey of Lenexa answered our queries regarding what’s great for fall recipes and curious palates. Each of these delicious choices weighs in under $20 per bottle, so dressing your table is affordable. Here are his picks in order of increasing body (whites to reds). • VIGNETI DEL VULTURE’S PIPOLI GRECO-FIANO BASILICATA. From the deep south of Italy, this is fruity, floral, and full-bodied. Great with chicken or pork. 32

• NINE HATS’ COLUMBIA VALLEY RIESLING (2013). This Washington
State wine is sweet, crisp, great with salmon, or for Thanksgiving. Open an hour ahead. • TABLAS CREEK VINEYARD’S PATELIN DE TABLAS BLANC (2013). Paso Robles in California has produced this full-bodied, honeydew tasting white. Great paired with flavorful food. • DOMAINE DE PALLUS CHINON MESSANGES’ ROSÉ CABERNET FRANC (2014). Hailing from the Loire Valley of France, this rosé
will surprise you! Not sweet, but full of flavor, pairs well with burgers or heavy vegetables (think Portabello). • LES LAUZERAIES’ TAVEL ROSÉ (2013). This is Michael’s top pick to please a crowd at Thanksgiving. Beautiful deep rosé color with f lavors that are f linty, delicate and fruity, but not overly sweet. • COOPER MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS’ PINOT NOIR (2012). Produced near Portland, Oregon, this wine is certified organic. The tastes of Bing cherries and spice go well with pork.

Rhone, France brings us a Grenache that is inky, full of body and great with a stew or heavy soup. • TIKAL’S PATRIOTA (2012). This Argentinian wine is 60 percent Malbec and great with, of course, Argentinian beef. It is full of taste and fairly tanic.

Gomer’s experts are ready and willing to consult with you on your own tastes and entertaining needs.

I
fell in love with cabbage last night. So in love, in fact, that my date and I told our waitress we could have skipped the hearty portions of pork loin, pork shoulder and sliced beef that get top billing on Grünauer’s Viennese Classics menu and been blissfully happy with a deep bowl of the humble vegetable. She shared a few tidbits about the recipe: beet juice keeps the color vibrant; lots of brown sugar keeps it sweet; hits of cinnamon and orange pulp keep it spicy and tart. It’s not that cabbage is a new revelation for me: I grew up with a Volga German grandmother in a family with roots in Austria, Germany and Russia. Our Thanksgiving stuffing is more bread pudding than what we see in magazines and on cooking shows, and good meals are defined by hunks of meat, cooked simply but impeccably. So it’s no surprise that dinner at Grünauer felt almost like dinner at home, albeit with better cocktails, strudel and coffee. I was immediately taken with the overall feel of the restaurant. Understated and warm, elegant yet welcoming, there were only a few tables available for an early dinner. We nabbed a spot next to a huge window, which gifted us with the best of both worlds: a view of the bar and the opportunity to watch the sun set over the Crossroads. The restaurant is cozy despite its size; chalk it up to the brick wall, the not-too-industrial chandeliers, and the high ceilings. Tables are spaced nicely and the music, while lovely, didn’t impede conversation. We admitted to our waitress that we were newbies and asked for her take on the menu. She walked us through the appetizers and suggested two: Miesmuscheln nach Orientalischer Art ($15), mussels cooked in a red curry coconut broth, and Wammerl ($10), pork belly perched atop a light and airy, fried semolina biscuit, with a dab of balsamic onion jam on top. We chose the latter. It was delightful. Choosing an entrée was nearly impossible: the three variations of Gulasch ($20-$22) are each popular choices, according to our waitress, as is Bauernschmaus ($26), a farmer’s plate with smoked pork loin, bacon, and bratwurst served over housemade sauerkraut. There are six Schnitzel dishes ($20-$24)—
among those traditional, creamed spinach stuffed, mushroom-cream covered and fried egg topped—and Austrian variations on steak fillet ($25) and trout ($25). We settled on two: Schweinebraten ($20), roast pork loin and shoulder served with bread dumplings and the aforementioned red cabbage, and Tafelspitz ($20), sliced beef served in a pool of consommé, accented with root vegetables. The Tafelspitz comes with a trio of sauces: apple horseradish, chive and creamed spinach. There’s humility to the food at Grünauer; generous portions of meats, seasoned sparsely to let the natural flavors stand on their own, just as my doting, loving grandmother would have served in days gone by. While the atmosphere is definitely more upscale than my kitchen table and the vibe is decidedly chic, the food is unassuming and comforting in its simplicity. The flavors took me back to meals I loved growing up; those I took for granted then but now crave, the foods that remind me of home. Make no mistake: it’s not easy to cook delicious food well and to show the restraint necessary to let humble ingredients shine. This is Grünauer’s strength, evident in the ability to turn shredded cabbage into a deep, seductive side dish and the talent to transform an apple and a handful of raisins to a sweet, perfectly-crisp strudel. Speaking of the strudel--Apfelstrudel mit Schlag ($8), to be precise—know that the portion is generous enough to share, though you might not want to. Paired with a cup of Grünauer’s house brew, Julius Meinl Coffee ($3.50), it’s the perfect end to a perfectly lovely meal. hawnee Mission East went undefeated and won the school’s first Class 6A state title last year. The Lancers were the last Shawnee Mission school to win a state title and they did it with second year Head Coach Dustin Delaney. Delaney impressed Lancer football fans the previous year when he led the team to their first state championship game in 2013, dropping a 28-21 decision to Derby. The opening for the coaching job came late in the 2012-13 school year. “When the job came open, I called and inquired,” says Delaney, who was in his third year as head coach at Emporia. “We visited awhile and then Principal John McKinney called me back and asked me to come up for an interview. Mr. McKinney called and offered me the job on my way home after the interview. I wanted more information on the job, so I came back to SME the next day with my wife to visit. We were sold by Mr. McKinney’s enthusiasm and love of the community.” The 33-14 win over Hutchinson last November gave the Lancers that coveted first state title in the sport and caught the attention of the school and alums alike. “For years, SME was a laughingstock in football,” says Delaney. “Showing we can be an elite academic school, great at non-football sports, and able to win state football at the same time shows how awesome a school SME is. I received many e-mails from alums who were so proud to be from SME and so happy to finally have football success. Winning state football really showed the Metro how truly awesome our kids and community area.”

Leawood Lifestyle | October 2015
What was the key to the undefeated season in 2014? “We had great players who were highly intelligent,” says Delaney. “Our players were not only tremendous on the field, but in the classroom as well. A total of 22 of our 28 seniors were on the honor roll and we started six players who scored over a 30 on their ACT test.” The 2015 season will bring a target on the team’s backs because everyone wants to beat the defending state champions. “Winning state is always tough,” says Delaney. “Things have to go your way and you need a little luck along the way. We don’t view this season as defending our title or repeating. It is a new team and we are going to attack our way to a state championship. Our goal is and always will be winning state. Our kids have bought into that and work with that goal in mind.” Delaney played inside linebacker for two years at Wichita Northwest and then two years at Marion (Kans.) High School. Then he went on to play the same position for four years at Emporia State. After college he went into coaching the sport. “I knew I wanted to coach from a young age,” he says. “I always wanted to stay around athletics and especially football. I love the strategy part of the game. My high school coach at Marion, Grant Thierolf, had a huge role me wanting to become a coach as well. I loved that he had such a huge impact in all our lives, and I wanted to coach and be like him.” Delaney was an assistant coach for two years at Clearwater and four years at Hutchinson before three years as a head coach at Emporia. He and his wife, Heidi, are both teachers at SM East. Their two daughters are in elementary schools in Leawood.

When Fetching Beer
Gets Complicated WORDS DENISE SNODELL
I
have a beer problem. Wait. That doesn’t sound right. I don’t even drink this popular beverage—never acquired a taste—but I am indeed going through a beer-related crisis. It all started at a fundraising event, too many months ago. An item at the silent auction table caught my husband’s eye—a gift certificate for his favorite local brewery. It offered the ultimate temptation: “A Special Four-Case Selection of Fine Beers.” Faster than you can say “beer me,” he pulled out his mighty pen. A quiet sword fight with other auction attendees ensued. But this was the good stuff. My husband “won.” I would have been thrilled if he had bid on four cases of wine, but no, we were suddenly the proud owners of a lot of beer. Almost 99 bottles, like the song. There was a complication, though. It turned out we wouldn’t be hearing the clinking of way too many amber vessels when we hit potholes on the drive home. Once we were handed the victory certificate, we learned the beer had to be picked up at another time and place. Such sobering fine print.

We were instructed to claim our prize at the brewery’s warehouse, which was an unfamiliar address somewhere around or past downtown. Not only that, we had to follow a strict beer-claiming procedure. So much effort. An email form had to be filled out. The certificate number was some kind of critical big deal. Once the paperwork was complete, the instructions informed us, we would have to wait until a company representative contacted us to set up a time to get the liquid loot. Can you imagine? Paperwork and appointments and wacky GPS coordinates for what…beer? The worst part—we’d have to choose from very limited windows of pickup times, all during inconvenient office hours. My schedule is more flexible than my husband’s, so I stupidly volunteered to chair the beer retrieval committee. What a mistake. I’ve had no incentive to drive an hour round trip to an industrial booze district. As of press time, I have not hopped to the task, so to speak. And it’s been getting weird around my household. The tension has escalated because my husband has stopped buying the occasional six-pack. It seems he
doesn’t want to have even a small supply at home when the motherlode is apparently coming. He’s been wrongly assuming I’d burst ahead through the flaming hoops and take the journey “any day now.” For months, the guy has been living beerless-ly. When things were normal, he would always enjoy holding a chilled brewski while grilling on the deck. He’d flip a burger, gaze out to the yard, and sip his beloved beverage. Yet now he can’t. Or rather, won’t. So lately, when my husband grills, he digs into the wine stash. Namely, my refreshing, crisp Riesling. He’s never been a Riesling drinker, ever, and I’m irritated. I tell myself he’s subconsciously seeking something fermented, chilled and Octoberfest-y. This is the best my guy can do to cope with our ironic beer void. But then again, hmm, he might have uncorked some kind of clever motivational trick: The Great Riesling Siphon. It’s working. I’m going to do everything it takes to claim his 96 bottles the moment I finish this column. What a crafty scheme.
