Yours Truly,

Lifestyle Letter

Home is where my heart is! H

ow blessed are we to live in a community of picturesque neighborhoods with homes and lawns and gardens that are well-maintained? Where people take pride in their homes? I find so much joy in living in a town where there are great parks and public spaces with fountains or public art and even parks for our dogs.

When I take a walk or jog around the neighborhood I love to notice the details about the homes I pass. Details I miss when I’m driving or riding in a car, such as the f lowers on the front porch or the annuals that f lourish in their gardens, the color of or decorations hanging on the front door, the neighborhood greenspaces, and so on. Because I’m fortunate enough to work from home, I’m able to spend most of my time in the home my family has created. My home office is really just the corner of a room we weren’t using nine years ago when I needed to set up shop from home. I love being able to enjoy this space I’ve created for my family, and as strange as it may be to admit, I love being able to tidy it up when I need to take five from the office chair.

Around Town HEAVENLY OLIVE OILS CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY Heavenly Olive Oils, located in Summit Fair Shopping Center, celebrated their 5th anniversary in October. Owners, Steve and Mindy Anderson declared this a “Customer Appreciation Day” as Chef Mike Silber, of Silberspoon’s Catering, prepared pulled pork sliders, and other delicious recipes using their ultra-premium imported extra virgin olive oils and aged balsamic vinegars for the guests to taste. More than 200 faithful customers and friends stopped by to celebrate and sampled the amazing food. Also, KC Chief’s Chaplin, Phillip Kelley, joined the fun as he visited with customers and autographed his book, “Divine Disturbance – Broken to Build.” Three lucky customers received Heavenly gift baskets that were raffled at the end of the day. Steve and Mindy said, “We feel very blessed to have celebrated this milestone and know we couldn’t have done it without our wonderful customers and amazing staff.” As the holidays approach think Heavenly for some tasty healthy gifts!

LAKEWOOD GARDEN CLUB POINSETTIA SALE Ho, ho, ho! It’s time for the annual Lakewood Garden Club Poinsettia Sale. This year, Lakewood’s Garden Club is pleased to continue with this holiday tradition by offering two poinsettia sizes and three color options to enhance anyone’s Holiday decorating style. The 6.5-inch pot is available for $14 and the 8.5 inch pot is $26. SCHOOL CITIZENS’ ADVISORY COMMITTEE HONORS JUDY NOLAND Judy Noland receives a certificate from Dr. David McGehee, R-7 superintendent, in recognition of her 44 years on the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District’s Citizens’ Advisory Committee (CAC). A retired Lee’s Summit R-7 staff member, Mrs. Noland joined the CAC in 1971 when she was asked by Dr. Bernard Campbell, longtime superintendent, to serve on the team. She has represented parents, students, staff members and citizens over her 44 years and frequently shares her expertise in the early-childhood area with the group. She will continue to serve on the group, which formed in 1952. The mission of the CAC is to facilitate communication and partner with the R-7 Board of Education, superintendent and community to ensure a successful and innovative school system that maximizes each student’s potential.

WHERE YOU SHOP MATTERS In a recent national study, 75 percent of individuals who described themselves as being community minded believe that shopping close to home makes them a better neighbor. When you spend money right here in Lee’s Summit, you generate sales tax dollars to meet the needs of your community. Sales tax revenue helps provide funding for our streets, parks, schools, fire and police departments. Think about it – would you even consider calling the Overland Park or Independence Police or Fire Departments in case of an emergency? Of course not. According to the Huffington Post, spending $100 at a local, independent business means $68 in local economic activity versus spending $100 at a big box retailer which translates to only $48 in local economic activity. We challenge you to shop small this holiday season. Small Business Saturday is November 28 and presents the perfect opportunity to get out of the hustle and bustle of shopping malls and into locally owned businesses to show your support. Downtown Lee’s Summit is offering special promotions and giveaways throughout the day for the chance to win prizes, including round-trip Amtrak tickets, bed and breakfast stays and more. Remember, where you shop matters. Visit DowntownLS.org for more information.

New Addition Adds to Downtown Lee’s Summit FRANKIE FARLANE’S FAST(ISH) FOOD ARTICLE SHARMIN MEADOWS | PHOTOGRAPHY ALEXIS COOK

L

ocated in the historic downtown of Lee’s Summit, Frankie Farelane’s opened in July and is locally owned by the same folks who run Stuey McBrew’s. Unlike its sister’s full service restaurant, Frankie Farelane’s is a fast, casual concept featuring street style tacos, wings, sliders and salads. With what Stuey McBrew’s has done by offering 13 different burgers on their menu, Frankie Farelane’s is replicating with tacos. The choices seem endless, with seven beef, six pork and nine chicken options and if you are a picky eater, they will gladly make a taco your way. We hit Frankie Farlane’s about 8 p.m. on a Friday night and these tacos hit the spot. I decided I had better try one of each protein so I had a beef avocado, a Korean pork and a chipotle chicken. My sister raved about her apple pecan chicken featuring cole slaw, diced apples, chopped pecans and feta cheese. My grown son who still eats like a six year old ate four tacos made just his way with beef and cheese. The flavor combinations are insanely good. The beef avocado is cool and creamy with spinach, asiago cheese and a garlic and herb dressing. The Korean pork offers a flavor and texture explosion featuring Asian slaw, key lime soy sauce and crispy wontons. Finally, the chipotle chicken was perfectly spicy and the epitome of a chicken street taco featuring Romaine lettuce, Monterey Jack cheese, black bean corn salsa and chipotle sauce. All tacos are $3 and I cannot say I liked one better than the other as they were all amazing. With so many others on the menu that sounded great, I cannot wait to go back. 18

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2015

I am thinking the fast(ish) tagline comes from the concept that although it is a fast casual establishment, the food is spectacular with items cooked to order using high quality fresh ingredients. I really think these tacos could go head to head with some from a full-service establishment. Since I have only had the tacos, I cannot comment on the sliders, wings or salads and with 19 more tacos to try, it may be sometime before I branch out and order other menu items. I am confident in saying that if they are anything like the tacos, I am sure they are delicious and am looking forward to trying all eight wing flavors, 15 slider choices and three salads. The decor features a fun black and white 50s style mural featuring a Leave it to Beaver look-a-like operating a remote control taco holding robot. The space is clean and streamlined with concrete gray floors, metal tables and red chairs. Frankie Farlane’s is open Monday through Saturday and is closed on Sundays. They open at 11 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. If you are looking at them to cure your late night dinner or snack craving I recommend getting there before they close for an order to go. With such a variety of menu items, ease of ordering and fast(ish) service, Frankie Farelane’s is a great for groups and families who all seem to want something different or individuals wanting a quick and delicious bite. Hot Spot reviews are based on an unannounced visit and the meal is paid for by Lifestyle Publications.

Flight of a Lifetime FALL IN LOVE WITH KANSAS CITY FROM THE AIR WITH KC COPTERS PREMIER HELICOPTER SERVICES

Plaza Lights Tour

ARTICLE KENDRA MATHEWSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

“I

t’s like flying a magic carpet,” says pilot Johnny Rowlands, his comment delivered to our ears through headphones during some of our staff’s introductory helicopter flight over Johnson County. We may even have been passing 700 feet above our Metcalf offices at the time. Rowlands owns and operates KC Copters, a fleet of six helicopters here in Kansas City. He is known to Kansas Citians for guiding us through traffic each day from his perch above the roadways, covering breaking news and keeping us safe from tornadoes with his helicopter storm chasing. Helicopter flight is incomparable to anything except experiences only our imaginations can conjure, like the night-time dreams of flying like superman, or picturing a magic carpet ride in books and movies. An airplane is too insulated and large to offer comparison. A hang glider or parachute do not compare because they lack total control by the driver/ rider. A helicopter defies gravity, moving to the will of its pilot. It is simultaneously adventurous and romantic. The cockpit is intimate. You sit inside a transparent bubble encompassed by a circumference of windows that evoke a high-tech, science fiction-y feel and provide a panoramic vista of the world around and beneath you. Liftoff and movement through the air is a little on the daring side of transportation. You feel it. I’m going to hold myself back as a writer here—I don’t want to spoil your own experience, because you must have one. I’ll stop short of describing that phenomenal view, so that you can create your own words for it when you’re up there yourself. But see this as an invitation to fall in love with our beautiful city in a whole new way, from a whole new perspective. “Fly with someone you know,” is a phrase you’ll hear at KC Copters, because the intimacy and adventure of a helicopter ride require a level of trust in your pilot and the company. KC Copters and Johnny Rowlands merit that trust. Kansas Citians know Rowlands through his decades of award-winning work with local television stations as a pilot and reporter. And he is one of the most experienced helicopter pilots around. In 40 years flying in our area, Rowlands has logged 25,000 incident-free hours.

22

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2015

By Malcolm Gladwell’s standard (it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in a field), that makes Rowlands a master’s master at helicopter piloting. (Thus, KC Copters also runs a training school at their home base.) He is also a certified tour operator, meaning he and the company have committed to the highest standard of safety. Our helicopter ride with Rowlands at the helm was exhilarating because we knew we were in the hands of a highly experienced expert, and his friendly, engaging personality was enjoyable to be with. “I want to help create a meaningful event our guests will talk about their whole lives,” says Rowlands, who certainly accomplished that for our crew. “Safety is everything, and we bury it in fun,” he says. “We are caretakers of the space between you and the ground. Our entire mission is to eliminate risk.” They do that by flying the most reliable helicopters, babying the engines so that they are maintained at the highest standards. “What separates us from other operators is how we run our engines and take care of the aircraft.” They also hire extremely knowledgeable and experienced staff, and cultivate an environment of friendly humor, gentlemanly decorum and consummate hospitality, executed by the flawless teamwork and contagious camaraderie of KC Copters personnel. “My standard is to treat our guests the way I want to be treated,” Rowlands says. That’s a high standard coming from this professional. At this point, can you picture yourself buckled in to the cockpit? Imagine the feel of the headphones on your head to cover the swooshing sound of the rotor above? Hear Rowlands familiar voice in your ears… “Clear. All right, here we go.”

Johnny Rowlands TAKE A PLAZA LIGHTS TOUR FROM THE AIR

Enjoy a one-of-a-kind celebration of the Christmas season, complete with a champagne reception, Christmas cookies and candy canes. Their “modern day sleigh” is decked out with Christmas lights and mistletoe, and you'll hear festive Christmas Carols in your headset as you dash away for a reindeer’s view of Kansas City’s famous Plaza Lights. Plaza Lights Tours depart from either their home base at Johnson County Executive Airport in Olathe, or Wheeler Downtown Airport in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri. Johnson County flights available Sunday - Friday. Downtown departures available Friday and Saturday only. CREATE YOUR MEANINGFUL EVENT WITH KC COPTERS

A helicopter experience makes a great holiday gift, an impressive first date or birthday milestone. Area Company is Changing the Landscape of Lawns NO PROJECT TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL FOR SUMMIT FLOORING AND TURF

ngela Grego, owner of Summit Flooring and Turf, knows what it’s like to take a gamble. During the height of the recession, she left an established career and headed for ‘greener’ pasture; literally. “My husband Kirk saw a need in the Midwest for synthetic grass, and once I met the family behind the brand of SYNLawn, it became an easy decision for me to branch into this area with synthetic lawns.” Grego’s gamble paid off. Today, Summit Flooring and Turf located at 1051 SE Century Drive in Lee’s Summit, has solidified themselves as a viable business in the community. The SYNLawn division, which is synthetic turf, is proud to be in several dog facilities around the metro area including Kennel Creek and Wayside Waifs. Working directly with several local school districts, they have SYNLawn installed on the playgrounds at many area schools. Some of the local parks and recreation departments have worked with Grego’s business for their playgrounds as well as problem areas where they have trouble growing grass. However, the dynamic aspect of Summit Flooring and Turf is the diversity and a ‘no limitation’ of where one may want synthetic grass installed. Grego says the residential market in greater Kansas City area have grasped the value of synthetic turf. She adds, “We’ve done backyard golf putting greens, dog runs, ground covering under homeowners play sets, and many a basement golf or softball/baseball project with our synthetic turf.” Pro golfer Tom Watson, who has captured 39 PGA Tour victories, numerous titles and golfed world-wide, had SYNLawn installed at his residence in southern Johnson County. “Tom says the ball comes out just the way he wants it to, just like it’s a real green,” Grego recalls with her conversation with the golfer. In addition, Summit Flooring and Turf is the exclusive synthetic grass supplier of the Kansas City Golf Show. With regard to the indoor flooring side of the business, Grego’s showroom offers anything a consumer would desire in the flooring. Samples of hardwood, ceramic and porcelain tile, cork, luxury vinyl, and more are displayed for easy shopping. They are also one of only three suppliers in the metro area to carry the high end Karastan carpet. They offer an environment that is shopper friendly with small isles and an easy flow to the space. The store is open Monday through Saturdays and Sundays by appointment, however times vary so it is best to consult their website for times of operation. Grego is excited about the future of synthetic grass, believes it’s here to stay, and that consumers are embracing this changing landscape. She’s honored to be a part of the changing industry. “With respect to the environment, we take pride in leaving a small footprint, but lasting memories,” says Grego. T

he options for a unique eating experience in Lee’s Summit have expanded with the recent opening of Bonchon. Located in Summit Woods Crossing next to Payless Shoes, the Asian-category restaurant offers the best of both worlds: satisfying a craving for something totally different, or something traditional. It’s an odd combination that makes sense when you learn the eatery’s background. Turns out, Americans and Koreans share a common love of fried chicken as comfort food. The restaurant’s founder wanted to share one of his country’s favorites with the world, and opened the first restaurant in 2002 in the coastal city of Busan, South Korea. There are now stores across the world, and the U.S. So, fried chicken is the “something traditional” specialty, and it’s also something spectacular. If that is what you opt for on your visit, the way it works is this: 1. Choose your chicken (wings, drums, strips or combo); 2. Choose your sauce (spicy, soy garlic or half & half). Bonchon cooks each order individually, using the highest quality ingredients, and hand-brushing each piece with their savory, secret sauces. The soy garlic strips I enjoyed were incredibly tender and juicy. The sauce forms an utterly perfect crust that is both light and crisp--a different taste and texture experience from our classic Southern fried chicken. While much of the food comprised in Asian food is similar, it is the spices, cooking techniques and serving style that distinguish the various regions and countries. Bonchon's “something totally different” options introduce taste buds to the spices distinct to Korean cuisine. I won’t spoil the surprise by describing Bonchon’s here so you can have your own culinary adventure. My own gastro-adventure (in addition to indulging in that terrific chicken) began with appetizers of potstickers with soy garlic sauce ($8.95), and edamame ($5.95). For the entrée I wanted to try the most traditional Korean dish, so the waitress guided me to bibimbap, white rice with assorted vegetables topped with a raw egg, served in a sizzling stone bowl with Korean red pepper paste on the side. It can be topped with spicy chicken, tofu, seafood or bulgogi, which is thinly sliced tender rib eye beef marinated and aged with a homemade sauce. ($13.95) I of course chose the very-Korean bulgogi. The raw egg can be cooked upon request, but for the full cultural experience, having it served in the classic raw form is fun. It does cook with the heat of the ingredients and bowl as you stir it in. The ambiance is modern and clean, with TVs for sports watching and a bar to compliment. It’s a family-friendly place, too, and Lee’s Summit’s owners created their own special kids’ menu. The unique combination of offerings makes it possible to please a variety of diners. Though a franchise, this location is locally owned and its owners are committed to giving back to the community by being generous to local nonprofits. “Bonchon” is the Korean word for “my hometown.” Welcome to ours!

Truly Broken A G.I.’S VIEW OF OCCUPIED JAPAN

Sam Saito in 1946 32

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2015

n one of the opening scenes of the movie Gladiator, General Quintus turns to Maximus (Russell Crowe) and says: People should know when they’re conquered. In the autumn of 1945, the Empire of Japan knew it was conquered. Seventy years ago, my father, Isamu “Sam” Saito, saw firsthand what a conquered people look like. They were not the screaming, banzai-charging soldiers of Okinawa, or buck-toothed, near-sighted savages seen in the movies, but a war-weary people who felt betrayed by their leaders and now were forced to accept their new role as a defeated nation. Sam was part of an obscure group of the Military Intelligence Service the U.S. Army used in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Their job was to translate documents and interrogate Japanese prisoners. Most of his buddies fought in Europe with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. But because of his knack for the Japanese language, Sam was assigned to the MIS. After assignments in the Philippines and Okinawa, he arrived in Tokyo in November of 1945. Sam was stationed at Tokyo’s Ueno railway depot. Since he was fluent in Japanese, he directed both U.S. military and Japanese civilian travelers to their designated trains, translated departure schedules and ensured the depot communication was accurate for both Japanese and English travelers. Upon his arrival, Sam expected to see a flattened, burned out city filled with bitter and hostile people. Instead, he found a Tokyo that was already rebuilding. The city was amazingly clean. The burned out exteriors of many buildings were still standing, but other debris was quickly cleared away. Like a colony of ants, the Japanese busily swept up and hauled away the bomb and fire damage and opened the streets for traffic. Likewise, Sam was unprepared for the reaction he received from the civilian population. The Japanese were angry at their political leaders for losing the war, and angry that they had such a bleak future. However towards their occupiers, they were indifferent. Sam found that the Japanese people were not friendly, but not frightened of them either. He never felt threatened. Sam carried a sidearm only because he handled the U.S. mail. Other allied soldiers had realized early in the occupation that they would not need to be armed. A few Japanese were, however, curious why he, a Nisei (second generation Japanese-American), would serve his country even when most of the Japanese population were interned in camps for the war. But their curiosity never extended beyond seeing Sam as an oddity of nature rather than a traitor to his family. They did not have time for luxuries like debating cultural allegiances. They had families to feed and lives to rebuild. Sam saw what most of America could not: a truly broken Japan. In the faces and eyes of its people, he could see the war was really over.

etting organized, staying organized and living a simpler life. Lots of us talk about it. Many make attempts with a New Year’s resolution, or answer the calendar’s call to spring clean. Some of us get a January jump-start, giving our homes a once-over after the holidays. Following a long winter, we perk up, greet the sun and get to work taming dust bunnies before Easter. Cleaning includes sorting, tossing and putting away a whole lot of “stuff.”

“Only things you love and enjoy deserve space in your home.” -Amy Lockwood

Any way you look at it, cleaning is actually an exercise in organization. However, particular projects may be overwhelming, leaving you wondering where and how to begin. When that’s the case, enlist professional help. Enter: organizing expert Amy Lockwood. Lockwood is the owner of A Home for Everything. She started the business in 2000, and she comes with impressive credentials, a master’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in project management. Her main focus is helping home and business clients de-clutter and establish working systems. She also stages homes for quick sale, manages moves and works with businesses to establish efficient workflow patterns. “Life is messy sometimes. Give yourself grace,” says Lockwood. She urges us to let go of duplicates, broken items and ill-fitting clothes. “Only things you love and enjoy deserve space in your home. Give yourself permission to release inherited clutter and purchasing mistakes.” Create an “Out-of-Here!” nook for items that need to be mailed, taken to a friend or dropped at the library. For these things, consider carving out a drop spot close to your car. If you use an item only once or twice a year, Lockwood says to place it outside your current living space. She also suggests keeping often-used objects close at hand.

STORE ITEMS WHERE YOU USE THEM

• Coffemaker, coffee, sweeteners and mugs near the sink • Dishes close to the dishwasher or near where you serve meals • Pots, pans, large utensils, knives and spices near the stove “Get everyone involved! Create a plan the whole family can follow,” says Lockwood. “Remember to respect what other family members enjoy. Clean up should be easy, if you want everyone to do it.” MAKE IT EASY FOR CHILDREN

• Make word or picture labels, and secure them to drawers and storage containers. • Create a lost game pieces box. The next time you play the game, go there first. • If items spill out of the original box, get a better container. • Eliminate unnecessary pieces in toy sets. Lockwood often helps clients choose storage systems, something that will be flexible to fit their ever-changing lives. She loves The Container Store, which recently opened in Hawthorne Plaza in Leawood, and she serves as an independent contractor for the new merchandiser. “I receive referrals of customers who want customized closets or other spaces. The affiliation gives me access to their Dallas design team to develop stunning solutions.” Lockwood uses storage systems from a variety of sources and creates custom solutions. ori Thompson grew up camping. “When I was eight or nine years old we toured every summer in our family’s teardrop truck camper,” she says. “I remember the clicking of the curtain clips and the coffee-can potty. I have happy memories of good times.” Those memories are a big reason why Thompson, of Leawood, now owns a vintage 1959 Oasis camp trailer that is just 13 feet long. She calls Simmons completely rebuilt the it Toto’s Tin Can and it is painted with brightly Spartan’s interior himself. colored sunflowers and a dancing girl created by Lisa Gentile of Phony Faux in Parkville. Thompson takes it to vintage travel trailer events such as the one held last August at the KOA campground in Branson, Mo., where I met her. “It’s reliving a simpler time for me,” says Thompson. “I can sit, color, read or go for a swim.” Thompson and her husband, Vernon, have been camping as long as they have been married. In addition to her Oasis, they have a reproduction of a 1961 Shasta Airflyte that they call Flying Monkey and a contemporary 27-foot trailer named Big Sal. Thompson belongs to a group called Sisters on the Fly (SistersOnTheFly.com). With 200 to 300 Mike Breton from Theodomembers in the Heartland and more than 6,500 sia, Mo., restored this 1946 worldwide, Sisters delight in being self-suffiAngelus while keeping it as cient. Vintage trailers are all the rage these days, and interest is exploding, spurred on in part because of TV shows such as Flipping RVs on the Great American Country channel but also because enthusiasts are enthralled with these rolling time machines that hark back to earlier days. And don’t underestimate how a tiny space appeals to our nesting instinct. Call it the coziness factor. Tin Can Tourists (TinCanTourists.com) is a club for vintage motor coaches and trailers, and Vintage Camper Trailers is a magazine dedicated to the same. Because most vintage trailers are quite small, owners usually create an outdoor space covered by brightly a colored awning. Some put down carpet and some decorate with signs, flowerpots, tables and period knickknacks. A string of lights create a welcoming ambiance at night. Spartan capitalized on the aircraft technology of the time by using high-end materials such as Lexan windows and an aluminum skin that was riveted together like the monocoque structure of an airplane. Simmons, who has been going to car shows since he was 15, explains that a vintage camper event is like a car show but more fun. “It’s like having a great car, but living in it,” he says. Many campers are do-it-yourself folks who have restored or rebuilt the interiors of their trailers and they love to show off their handiwork. The work often reflects the personality of its owner. In 2014, the Branson KOA had 40 campers for its vintage weekend but this year there were 70. They expect perhaps twice as many next year.

mong the beautiful homes nestled in New Longview is the beautiful Craftsman-inspired home of Brad and Emily Klapmeyer. When they decided to plant their family roots in Lee's Summit, they worked with their builder Matt Faulkner to design a home around their dream of family life, and the result has provided a beautiful home where they are making many memories with their children.

FAMILY TIME

With a living area open to an eating area and the kitchen, lots of family time is spent in the heart of their home. The Klapmeyers asked Amy Robertson at Cameron's Home Furnishings to help them and after a short meeting Amy filled their home perfectly. They have also decorated with meaningful elements from Longview barns and old homes. 44

KLAPMEYER HOUSE (CONTINUED) ALL BOY

Don’t let the grey walls fool you... Their son’s room is home to a caring and creative heart. Lava lamps, air hockey/origami/paper airplane table, and reading books, lots of books, in a comfy beanbag, indicate that good things are happening in this room. It’s rare to find the book on the bookshelves, but that is the purpose, right?

SUPERHERO GIRL

Ever wonder what a superhero hideout might look like? Their little Superhero girl loves blue, so they went blue but with something more fun. Hints of superpowers are noticeable throughout the room - the Batman artwork made with a neighbor superhero--Jenny Johnson, super secret Batman blanket technology on the bed and a whole bookshelf of superhero training manuals. Though they won’t disclose the secret location of the entrance to the Batcave.

PRINCESS’S PALACE

Please let us announce you as a guest as you enter the room of the youngest of the three children, but certainly their youngest is the also the most royal. From pink walls, full vanity, closet full of gowns, crown glass artwork, and a bookshelf full of teachings from the Disney Princesses, this room should make any (future) princess feel right at home. Melissa Jones of AbFamCreations.etsy.com helped with this room. And, there is no pea under that mattress.

CARRIAGE HOUSE

Sitting above the garage, yet connected to the main home, the carriage house is usually buzzing with activity and serves as yet another place of community in their home. A key activity is bottle cleaning, yeast growing, grain mashing, hop smelling and beer tasting, as it serves as the location for home brewing. Other “family friendly” activities include arts & crafts, video games and board games. Also, come late December, and once the Christmas tree is up, Santa has decided this is the perfect place to keep presents out of sight in case the kids have a tough time sleeping on Christmas Night. 46

ome ownership has, for generations, been an integral part of the American dream. Generations after the phrase was coined, the purchase of a home continues to be the greatest investment many of us might ever make. No matter the value of our current place of residence, it seems we always like to keep our eye on the real estate market in our community. We invited several Lee's Summit realtors to show us how much home our money can buy as of the fourth quarter of 2015. It is exciting to see how the real estate market has recovered since the most recent economic recession.

Driver’s Notebook

The Lexus RC 350 is a High-Styled Sport Coupe ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

T

he 2015 Lexus RC 350’s 306-horsepower V-6 delivers a satisfying kick in the pants, the handsomely proportioned coupe body exudes performance and the cockpit-style interior surrounds you with comfort. But the “spindle” grille that looks a bit like a scowling catfish leaves me cold. Variations on this face now appear on nearly every Lexus model in one form or another as part of the company’s design language. I presume the look is intended to appeal to a younger audience and perhaps help Lexus overcome past criticism that its cars lacked a sporty enough character. Lexus calls the RC 350’s styling “audacious,” but I think the grille disturbs the elegant lines that are carried throughout the rest of the vehicle. Would it stop me from buying one? Probably not, because so much of the car is right. There’s no doubt the RC 350 turns heads, as I found out after driving it for a week. I received several thumbs-up waves from folks on the street so perhaps I’m one of the few who thinks the grille is overdone. The long-hood, short-trunk profile is archetypical sport coupe in the way it emphasizes the power of the engine. The scoops next to the grille and the faux vents in the back fenders are obviously only for decoration but bother me less than the grille. Many of the design cues came from the out-of-production LFA supercar that had a price of $375,000.

54

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2015

The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe starts at $42,790. It has an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shifters on the steering column. The all-wheel-drive that would be much better suited to winter climates begins at $45,025. It has a six-speed automatic. An F Sport version starts at $47,875 for rear-wheel drive and $49,705 for all-wheel drive. The F Sport was created for enthusiasts who want items such as variable suspension, Lexus Dynamic Handling with rear-wheel steering and variable-ratio steering. The F Sport gets a unique texture in the grille and 19-inch wheels. Crisp handling is one of the RC 350’s main attributes. While not as performance-oriented as the F Sport, it still responds as if it knows what you have in mind. The chassis platform is a mix of GS and IS sedan segments and it is stiff and tight. The ride is not overly harsh. The driver can select Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow driving modes. In many respects, the interior of the RC 350 reminded me of the IS 250 sedan. The instrument panel looks somewhat similar, as do the controls. The deep bucket seats fit me perfectly. On vehicles equipped with navigation, a clever touchpad on the center console uses tap, pinch and flick gestures to control audio, navigation and other systems. Bluetooth connectivity for telephone and audio CONTINUED > streaming is standard.

Parting Thoughts

HOME ARTICLE MOLLY WILLIAMS

T

o those of us who can rattle off the phone number of the first home they lived in, (Willow2-1604) the pull of memory can be powerful and bittersweet. It can shape all our future place wishes, and rarely fades with time. Childhood homes are more than our first stop on this earth. They are where we learn our names, and also who we are. That we are more than just ourselves; we are first part of our family, then our neighborhood, then the community, and hopefully eventually a larger world. My first home was a sturdy ranch in a now aging post-war subdivision. Although it seemed huge and completely familiar to me then, when I drive by it slowly now, it looks like all the other tidy tracts of its era, indistinguishable on its block. Since my first house I have lived in two other homes of my parents, a number of dorm rooms and the sorority house in my college town; six different apartments around the city, and two houses of my own. But nothing has the pull of that first home. In the memory box of that house live the thudding of my brothers roughhousing in the hallway, the smell of my mother’s fresh baked bread, and the taste of the strawberries that escaped under the chain length fence of the sweet elderly neighbors to the rear of us. I can hear my dad whistling his way home in the garage, and the dog’s toenails scratching let me in from the backyard. Although I spent less than 10 years in that house, they were important ones, and they linger long in who I am.

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2015

My husband and I moved into our current house three months before our daughter was born. (By the way, visibly pregnant is a great time to move – no one expects you to do anything remotely strenuous.) Although the current plan is to plant the for sale sign as the U-Haul pulls away for college, by then she will have spent her entire childhood in this house. Before I am ready, she will leave this room she made hers at three days old. Its walls have made the paint progression from baby girl pink through tween green to young lady lavender. Here is the hallway where she took her first steps, the bedroom door she slammed with all her thirteen-year-old fury, and the kitchen counters she no longer needs a stool to reach when we make Christmas cookies. Outside is the rainy sidewalk where she broke her arm on a treacherous two-wheeler since corralled in the shed. The trees she climbed, the playhouse now overgrown with weeds, the block she took long thoughtful walks around. And here the front porch light, under which she may eventually kiss a boy. Wherever we are, she will always have a home, of course. I know my independent girl will make her own lovely world around her. But I am glad we will have given her what my parents gave me. Wherever she lives, she will take with her the memory of home, to be opened over and over again like a gift which never fails to surprise and cheer. Ribbons of memory will wrap her with us, sometimes triggered by nothing more than a never to be forgotten phone number.
