Santa has his list, so make your own!
I
recently attended a series of classes to help me work through a bit of the grief I was feeling after the sudden loss of my only brother last year. I took so many gems of wisdom away from the book we read as well as from the room full of folks who quickly felt like old friends.

One thing I did was make a few lists.
Ann Butenas, John Beaudoin, Andrea Grist, Emily Hawkins,
I made a list of things I miss about my brother. I made a list of some of the favorite childhood memories we shared. And then I started making some lists that didn’t make me want to cry. I thought about what he’d be proud of when he thought of me. There were at least half a dozen states between us so we didn’t see each other as often as I would have liked, but I know he was proud of his two nephews, the life I’d created for my family and the mother I’d become. He was proud of certain accomplishments and he wasn’t afraid to let me know it. So rather than make yet another to-do list or a wish list of household projects or gift ideas, and rather than fret about making a list of things I need to do differently in the new year, I decided to end my year by making some lists where I wouldn’t be crossing things off. A few of my lists have titles such as: -20 things I’m proud to have accomplished -10 cities I would visit again -My favorite beaches and boat trips -Things I love about our home and hometown -Songs I like having stuck in my head

As the year ticks to a close and you find yourself with a moment or two of calm after the busy-ness of the holiday season subsides, consider finding an old notebook and starting a few lists of your own. I assure you, it is really quite satisfying!

MEET LUCY & WYATT
ARTICLE EMILY HAWKINS | PHOTOGRAPHY JACOB MEYER
A
re you looking to add a furry friend to your home this holiday season? Meet Lucy, year-and-a half year old Pointer mix. Lucy loves to learn new things and would thrive in a home with a family who can teach her tricks and help her continue to improve on her obedience training. Lucy enjoys long walks, playing with her many toys, and puzzles. If you think Lucy sounds like your kind of dog, email Adoptions@GreatPlainsSpca.org to learn more, or view hundreds of other pets looking for homes at GreatPlainsSPCA.org. Winter is upon Kansas City, and while they are celebrating a year of lifesaving at Great Plains SPCA, they are also preparing for a cold winter ahead. With temperatures dropping, they will see even more pets in desperate need of warm shelter, medical care and forever homes. Their team is hard at work preparing for winter, and YOU are a vital player with the power to save pets like Wyatt… When they found Wyatt, he was on a short rope tied to a porch in the heat of summer. The HERO Team rescued him, and quickly discovered he was suffering from the often-fatal parvovirus. Wyatt would not have survived another day had he not been found and rescued. He now has a second chance at life. Wyatt is just one of more than 35,000 local pets they will help by year-end. Great Plains SPCA is providing a variety of lifesaving programs to all of our community’s pets, and the people who love them. They are creating families through adoption, reuniting lost pets with their owners, connecting seniors and kids with shelter pets, providing quality veterinary care to pets who might otherwise go without, and so much more. Please join they Great Plains SPCA family this winter in celebrating the lives they’ve saved in 2015 across Kansas City, just like Wyatt’s, and the lives they will touch in the coming year. They are a local nonprofit and do not receive any federal, national, or United Way funding. Their nonprofit relies on the benevolence of local animal lovers. Any donation between now and December 31 will be doubled to go twice as far during their December Match Campaign. Make a difference and save a life at GreatPlainsSPCA.org. 26

T
o say Angela Grego loves Christmas is an understatement. A co-owner of Summit Flooring and Turf with her husband, Kirk, Angela's passion for the season originates with memories of her grandmother who helped raise her. The yearly traditions impressed deeply on her heart the beauty of time together and the importance of the love of family. All of those impressions were formed around the tree decorating she and her cousin did with their grandmother. So Angela favors the ornaments and decorations she inherited after her grandmother passed on. Out of her big heart, Angela creates for her own family (which includes daughters Alexis McGhee-24, Olivia McGhee-19 and Sidney Grego-14) a true winter wonderland. This year with the help of Aileen at Alyssa's, the family residence has touches of the season throughout every room. Angela's design preference focuses on the light, whimsical, jolly side of decor rather than traditional. She loves lots of lights to cast a glow and create a special holiday ambiance. You'll find a Santa Claus in every room, because she believes the world needs someone happy like Santa. Each CONTINUED >

room gets its own theme, including for this year a beautiful woodland theme incorporating a fur tree skirt, and of course a Royals themed tree. The Grego family tradition for Christmas Day is to spend the day all together baking, celebrating, having everyone around the (fantastically decorated) dining room table and enjoying a meal together. With so much love to give, the Gregos entertain a lot, and host one large party during the season. It's a treat for all their guests to see the decor. "We love sharing the joy of the season, cooking and entertaining," says Angela. Her special touches also include enthusiastically matching the wrapping of the presents under each room's tree to the room's decor.

THE HOLIDAY TABLE
(CON TI N U ED)
T
he holiday season seems busier than ever these days. Between the school programs, work parties, church events and family gatherings it can be hard to enjoy a quiet evening at home between Halloween and New Year’s Day. I have started my own family tradition of making time for us at home during the holiday season. Preparing a meal with my children, making traditional candies, stringing popcorn, and setting our holiday table are just a few of the special activities we enjoy together. As my children grow it is amazing to see what the holidays mean to them and how they embrace the things we as parents introduce as traditions. Gathering around the table at the holidays are some of my most cherished memories. Whether it is a simple brunch on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, or a more formal dinner with friends or neighbors, gathering at the holiday table is a gift we can treasure as much as anything that might be found under the tree. Set aside some time to set a beautiful table this holiday season, and take the time to sit down, relax, and enjoy what you’ve created.

Business teacher and assistant football and wrestling coach Buddy Spurck has a story to tell about Crawford and the sidelines in football. “He enjoys being part of the (football) team and sometimes gets into the action, albeit accidentally,” says Spurck. “We were playing a freshman game against Blue Springs and Evan got a little too close to the field and was almost wiped out on the sidelines. hen Cole Soucie and his wife moved to the Longview area, he was amazed at the history of the area as well as the farm. A few years later, a committee at the Longview Chapel asked Soucie to draw the church for its100th anniversary and he was thrilled to be a part of the celebration. Cole would eventually like to do a series on the Longview farm by drawing several of the other historical structures to help drive awareness of the local history. Soucie loves the excitement fans show for their Kansas City sports teams and he is trying to capture some of this excitement by doing a series of drawings of Royals players. While he has never been in a show, he would like to get enough work compiled to enter some of the local art shows in and around Kansas City. See more of Cole’s work at ArtWanted.com/CSoucie.

Parting Thoughts
WORDS MOLLY WILLIAMS
C
hristmas is for children. We know that, and we believe that, because we were children, and we remember. We remember that giddy feeling of the last half day of class before two weeks – two weeks! – of vacation from school. We know the delicious torment of walking slowly by the ever-growing pile of presents under the tree, wondering what shaking or poking we can get away with, knowing that a jolly red-coated whiskered old man will certainly bring more, no matter what we deserve. We can almost taste the cookies. Nothing could be better than being a kid at Christmas. Even as a young adult it was grand. Freed from school worries by the exclamation point of finals and not yet burdened by having to reciprocate the parental gift giving (who had funds for that?) that jingle-belled break was a self-indulgent orgy of soaking up mom’s attention, not making the childhood bed and catching up with high school friends. Yes, Christmas is definitely for children. And then I had my own. My daughter was born just six weeks before her first Christmas, so chances of anything being remembered were pretty slim, but my husband and I were struck by the grave responsibility of establishing holiday traditions. Every family’s is different, and when making our own, we could pick from each of ours or start fresh. Do we open presents Christmas Eve or morning? Or a little of both? Midnight Mass? Tricky with kids, but oh so mystical and enriching. Do we still make the rounds of holiday open houses, or do we stay at home and sing our own carols by the piano? Christmas brunch or dinner? Turkey or ham? All Santa or all wrapped, or some of each? The choices! And it was so important, or seemed that way, because what we do with her, we knew would form the bedrock of HER traditions, and the things which would be her family memories, and maybe even passed down to her children and theirs. In the end, of course, we blended, and the ones that worked, we kept. The weekend before we do a slow drive of the neighborhoods to check out the lights. Christmas cookies are a huge production, and the two days for making and delivery are scheduled way in advance. We still go to my mother’s house on

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | December 2015
Christmas Eve Eve, leaving the actual Eve for our tiny family to sit by the fireplace, write the Santa letter, and put out cookies and oatmeal for the reindeer. My husband always does a dramatic reading of Twas the Night Before Christmas, and the carols get sung. Our moms now come to our house Christmas morning for a warm and lingering brunch. Natalie still thinks, as all children do, that Christmas is the best thing on earth.
There, all around me, as I do for others, and make theirs special, is my grown up Christmas. Childhood has nothing on this. But I have learned that it is even better doing it all for them. My greatest holiday joy now is what I see in her face as we bake, and in my husband’s as we sing, and in my mother’s as she toasts her family with the required Bloody Mary, and in my brother’s kids as they jostle on the couch, and in the faces of my parish community surrounding me at church belting out the requisite “Joy to the World.” There, all around me, as I do for others, and make theirs special, is my grown up Christmas. Childhood has nothing on this. I can’t wait for December.
