Lifestyle Letter
Letter from the Creative Director
I
love everything about fall in the Midwest. The leaves changing colors, the crisp evenings with a bonfire and the rich fall foods on Thanksgiving are some of my favorite reasons I look forward to this season.
The time spent with family around the Thanksgiving table, and the chaos and joy of a full house of relatives has always been priceless to me. Our Thanksgiving family tradition each year is to go around the room and share or reflect on something from that year that we have either grown from, something that has stretched us or what we are thankful for. It’s always a bit awkward at first to share, but in the end, it brings a little bit more meaning to our family time on Thanksgiving, and it helps me to appreciate the year and each other. Reflecting on what I am thankful for not only helps me to remember the blessings from that year, but it usually reveals gratitude in times of trials as well, because it is often in those times when true growth occurs and my dependency on my faith is imperative. Trials and moments of being stretched, although tough, help us grow and become stronger in character, and an appreciation for the little things we would normally take for granted occurs.

One of the best ways to show gratitude for what we have is by giving of ourselves to others. Whether it be through our time, treasure or talent, the selflessness of serving strengthens our character and is so rewarding. There is something about giving that feels so much better than receiving, and I believe it’s because we were made to give and to work together. This month is our Giving Back issue. The inspiring stories of perseverance and local people making a difference in our community challenges me to go out and do more. Our city is full of opportunities to serve, with so many people who genuinely show love through the selflessness of giving. Happy Thanksgiving!

Enjoying life while going through a divorce
Stange Law Firm, PC
Going through a divorce can be one of the hardest experiences anyone will ever go through. All of a sudden the future becomes uncertain. The present becomes uncertain. Emotions like pain, anguish, anger and worry can overwhelm somebody. “What will end up happening with the kids?” “How will the finances look after the case is over?” “Will I ever be able to move on with my life?” These are all common questions a party going through a divorce may ask. For some,
these questions can be overwhelming and cause them to lose the joy in life. What should a party going through a divorce do? Well, for starters, a party going through a divorce needs to hire an attorney who they trust to handle the legal aspects of their case. They then need to follow the advice of that attorney. For some, undergoing counseling of some kind might be a help or aid. For some, it might involve joining a group of other adults who are going through a divorce. It might involve, for some, going to a church, synagogue, mosque,
etc., for help, support and guidance. his is definitely the easiest and best way to make rich-tasting butternut squash soup, without having to peel and dice a large,
awkwardly shaped vegetable. You start by cutting the squash in half lengthwise and roasting it in a hot oven. Scrape the roasted flesh from the skin, and simmer it with sautéed yellow onion, fresh sage, and a tart Granny Smith apple. When everything’s soft and the flavors have melded, purée it all in the blender. Finally, enrich the soup with a bit of heavy cream.

1. Heat the oven to 425°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the squash pieces cut-side up on the baking sheet. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter and brush all of it over the tops and insides of the squash halves (alternatively, you can rub it on evenly with your fingers). Season generously with salt and pepper. Roast until knife tender, 50 minutes to 1 hour. 2. Meanwhile, peel, core, and cut the apple into medium dice. Cut the onion into medium dice. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the apple, onion, and sage, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened,

Alex Talb ott’s Showing Gratitude through Donation ARTICLE ADRIANE TAYLOR PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED AND VINSON IMAGES
A
popular question asked to young college graduates is, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” For Alex Talbott this question seemed simple enough: happily married, studying dentistry, and a continued life of physical health and wellness, and for the most part all of these aspirations rang true. But along the way a pretty significant obstruction halted Talbott and his ambitions and forced him to redefine what it means to have patience, resilience, and determination. He also had to be steadfast in faith that there are people in the world willing to donate bone marrow and that one of these people would be the perfect match. Alex Talbott grew up in Missouri and led a pretty normal life rich with personal successes. He was athletic by nature, and filled his life with many sports including basketball and golf. Being part of an organized team gave him life, and his love for sports followed him to Pittsburg State where he played both football and ran track and would meet his future wife, Jamie. Together they would begin to build their lives, and eventually they moved to the Kansas City area where Talbott could continue to pursue his career in dentistry. Then in January of 2015 Alex Talbott began to feel uncharacteristically fatigued, and his symptoms lingered for a couple of weeks. Alex and his wife decided an appointment was necessary, since they had indication he may have contracted mononucleosis. A trip to urgent care determined that was not the case, also ruling out influenza. The nurse practitioner ordered a comprehensive, complete blood count be done to ensure them that anemia was not the culprit. Within 48 hours, Talbott was referred to an oncologist, and that realization alone left the couple shocked and sent their minds reeling. The diagnosis would follow just days later: Leukemia. He was 27 at the time. They instantly knew they were about to embark on the most challenging journey together as they prepared to take on a very aggressive form CONTINUED > of cancer with a chance of survival a grim 40%. ALEX TALBOTT’S JOURNEY
(CON TI N U ED)
Talbott’s treatment was immediate, and he initially received a number of different types of chemotherapy in efforts to battle the cancer. He was forced to take a leave of absence from dental school and gave his best efforts to remain physically and mentally strong. But with a form of Leukemia so combative, a bone marrow transplant was imminent. A donor match from Europe gave the Talbotts what they had hoped, and his transplant was scheduled. To prepare his body for the transplant, Talbott had to receive obliterative conditioning and extremely high doses of additional chemotherapy. May 20, 2015 became Alex Talbott’s day of rebirth. He remained in the hospital for one-month post-transplant and traveled to the Cancer Center daily for weeks following the surgery. It took months for him to reach a moment of reprieve, but thanks to the perfect bone marrow match, Talbott is currently in remission. There is no denying the emotional toll that cancer can have on any family, and Alex and Jamie Talbott are no exception. Optimism may seem an intangible dream some days while others positivity is plentiful. Jamie had to learn to balance working full-time as well as being Alex’s primary caregiver. But there was an enormous amount of support from their families. Add to this, simple gestures like a daily phone call from the Talbots’ niece, Elle, made the gray moments not seem so insurmountable. It was through these conversations that Alex was able to always find promise, even during times when his recovery was bleak. Elle, in some ways, was the permission he needed to feel joy. Another seemingly unrelated source of enjoyment was witnessing the Kansas City Royals conquer their own battles in every game that they played in 2015. The couple watched faithfully that year, and with each win the Royals accomplished, it made Alex’s victory not seem so farfetched. But there is a grander movement that stands out as being a necessary component for Alex’s healing. Bone marrow donations are one of the most charitable forms of assistance one could give, and being a volunteer donor may give someone a fighting chance. That is all Alex and Jamie Talbott were hoping. It is because of this gift, they are continuing their unpredictable, yet rewarding, days together. 30

But there is a grander movement that stands out as being a necessary component for Alex’s healing.
How Can We Help? Bone Marrow Transplantation has saved many lives. This treatment is very different than the traditional chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical therapies we may think of as cancer care. The rationale for treatment of cancer in marrow transplantation is to bring the donor’s immune system into the patient to hunt down the cancer as if it were an infection. The immune system of the donor is what we rely on to kill the cancer. It is, essentially, immunotherapy. There is a shortage of bone marrow donors in the United States, and there are times we cannot find donors who genetically match our patients. It is especially difficult for ethnic minorities to find a donor, as they underrepresented in the registry. When we have more volunteers in the registry, we are more likely capable of offering the best possible source of cells to a patient.
Joining the bone marrow registry is quite easy. The first step is to visit the website, bethematch.org . After signing up online, a kit will be sent to your address which comes with instructions on how to swab your cheek and return the sample for testing. Joining comes with a responsibility, however. It is important to join only if you intend to donate if you are found to match a potential patient. Bone Marrow Donation Information provided by Dr. Doug Myers/Children’s Mercy Cancer Center

att Staub, founder of marketing agency Proxima, snapped hundreds of photographs and recorded video once he and members of Children International set foot in Ecuador. Staub and the Children International (CI) team made their way to the nonprofit’s community center in Guayquil, Quito, as part of a nine-day trip. Located high in the foothills of the Andean mountains, the center is a safe haven to kids from dangerous environments. The threat of gang recruitment, violence, and drugs exists just beyond the doorstep in communities enveloped by poverty. “The community center is a safe place for kids. It is truly an oasis,” says Staub. “It’s not safe on the streets. We have a posse that travels with us. The streets are in disrepair. There are dirt roads and trash in impoverished neighborhoods. Homes are plywood shacks and brick.” Headquartered in south Kansas City, Children International serves nearly 300,000 impoverished children and youth in 10 countries around the world. Their community centers provide services such as medical and dental clinics, pharmacies, libraries, computer labs, activity spaces and multipurpose rooms. On this trip, Staub’s role involved teaming with CI to show the impact of its centers and sponsorship by donors on the lives of children and the community. He began working with the nonprofit in January 2016, helping them refine a social media strategy and develop content. “I worked directly with people in the field at CI,” says Staub. “I gather stories and media to share with CI’s audience from a first-person perspective. We take the audience along with us and tell a holistic story of CI’s work.” Staub and the CI team visited the center in Guayquil and other towns. He conducted video interviews with people from the community as well as capturing imagery that shows their daily lives. Shortly after arrival, Staub, CI staff members, and teenagers broke into a game of soccer in the courtyard of the community center. Younger children drew boundaries with chalk for hopscotch.
Preconceptions of Guayquil and its people formed and observed from the internet, a plane window, or tour bus change once interaction begins face-to-face. “I felt like I knew a lot, but I knew nothing until I was there. We apply our paradigm. You can’t imagine being lower on the hierarchy of needs,” says Staub. “I didn’t know anything until I spoke with the kids at the community center. I have never been to a country like this.” CI helps to break the cycle of poverty by enlisting people to sponsor a child and donate funds that go toward programs and activities that help these children. Community center team members work with volunteers and sponsors to help the children. From the

We have a shared humanity. Their circumstances are drastic but not desperate, and It gives me hope to see their earnestness to keep pushing. outside, Staub understood the mission of CI and the importance of its efforts to change the quite real circumstances behind the statistics. Still, he wasn’t fully prepared for what to expect when he met the children for the first time. “The kids don’t know their circumstances,” says Staub. “They are excited and want to have fun. It puts perspective on the basic needs of life. We have a shared humanity. Their circumstances are drastic but not desperate, and It gives me hope to see their earnestness to keep pushing.” Recognizing this distinction as a storyteller is important. Staub’s intent was not to cast sad-eyed children in a stereotypical role––the voiceless kids seen on late-night commercials while brooding, heart-tugging messages and music deliver a call to action. 36
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2016
“CI wants to tell their stories in an upbeat, hopeful way that is authentic,” says Staub. The youth served at CI’s centers learn about the fundamentals of hygiene and healthy habits. Students receive assistance with school fees, uniforms, supplies, tutoring and scholarships so they may complete secondary education and advance further. Youth at all ages learn empowering skills of leadership, teamwork, and confidence. Kids eventually grow into teenagers that need assistance, so they can gain employment and become future leaders in their community. CI helps them prepare with mock interviews, résumé writing, connecting with jobs, earning scholarships for college, or vocational training. Before arriving in Quito, Staub was not a sponsor of a child. That status changed when he met Jordin, a seven-year-old boy eager to try speaking English. “Many kids are looking for a father figure,” says Staub. “A sponsor has a one-toone relationship with a child.” After spending time with Jordin and seeing CI’s operations firsthand, Staub decided he would become Jordin’s sponsor. “After one week, I was thoroughly impressed with the center, staff, and the kids,” he says. Back in the United States, Staub is working with CI to create images, videos, and stories that explain the nonprofit’s purpose and role. He is also completing steps toward becoming Jordin’s sponsor. His belief in the impact of the organization, and his personal commitment remains firm. “Given our luxuries, we can make an outsized difference through CI’s efficient programs for a small outlay,” says Staub. “The impact is pretty amazing. Everyone should travel to meet people at their community center and see what CI does.” Even as he sifted through photographs and shared details of his first trip to Quito, Staub reiterated his decision to return to CI’s community center in Ecuador. “I made lasting friendships,” he says. “You connect strongly with the community in a way a tourist can’t.” Visit Children.org to learn more about Children International’s community centers and sponsorship.

Taking it to the Streets Nonprofit provides year-round help and holiday hospitality
ARTICLE NATALIE FIELEKE PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
W
hen a massive fire and building collapse tragically claimed the lives of two firefighters at Independence and Prospect avenues on October 12, 2015, Scott Lamaster was there to comfort those who had lost a co-worker, a friend or their home. For 13 days he remained on the scene with his Greenwoodbased nonprofit organization Taking it to the Streets, providing thousands of meals, bottles of water and protein bars to first responders investigating the fire. “People have no idea the gamut of emotions that can exist for first responders after something like that,” Lamaster says. “Food is a comfort tool and our way of putting our arms around them and hugging them, letting them know they’re not alone.” When emergency responders are on a scene for a longer period of time, Lamaster arrives with an emergency response trailer equipped with bathroom facilities, the first of its kind in the country. His volunteers set up tents with TVs, tables and chairs to provide a meal, a moment’s rest and a mental escape. 42
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2016
During the holiday season, Lamaster ramps up his organization’s efforts to show first responders they are honored, respected and appreciated for spending the holiday away from family. During Thanksgiving, he hopes to partner with Kansas City-area churches to provide meals to 500 on-duty first responders at 15 to 20 fire stations. For the Christmas season, his goal is to provide 1,000 meals to responders, plus his regular twice-weekly meal outreach to 125 KC-metro area homeless individuals. Regardless of the time of year, Lamaster believes that the quality of food he serves communicates a message, and he wants to be known for serving the best food on the streets. Prime rib sandwiches, steak and potatoes, barbecue and apple pie with a scoop of frozen custard are some of his favorite meals to show he cares. “We serve them a great meal like they’re a guest in our home because we want people to open up to us, communicate and build relationship,” Lamaster says. “I don’t care if they’re the president or if they’re a homeless person. They are going to get the same meal.” This philosophy is portrayed in the scene that took place in front of Kansas City Police Department headquarters on Christmas day 2015. Lamaster contacted KCPD Major James Connelly to say he’d gotten a good deal on some steaks and that he’d like to serve on-duty police and fire personnel a good meal. Given the go-ahead, he set up his mobile kitchen at police headquarters. Word got out, and before long, the homeless people Lamaster serves weekly were streaming to police HQ for a steak dinner alongside on-duty police and fire personnel. “He was feeding a multitude,” Connelly says. “Scott is a selfless citizen-partner with public safety. He gives without expecting anything in return, and that’s a noble position to take.” Lamaster, a now-retired businessman, began his charitable efforts 15 years ago. As a single father, taking his three children out to serve the homeless of Kansas City was a means for instilling good values. Over the years, his efforts have expanded with a cadre of volunteers to provide aid to first responders and disaster victims, and in 2012, he incorporated Taking it to the Streets as a 501c3 nonprofit organization. In May, Lamaster was presented with the Kansas City Police Department’s Meritorious Service Award for providing aid to the men and women of the KCPD. While recognition may draw more enthusiasm, volunteers and funding for his efforts, Lamaster says his best recognition is to know he’s made a difference and to see lives changed. We want to have all new and old customers feel that same love and care as soon as they walk in our door. And if we have a spot to hang fliers and display their art work to sell, I want to help them out just as much as they are helping me by bringing friends and family in my shop.” Waggoner is a wife and mother of two beautiful daughters. Her husband,

created the name and logo of her shop and tends to be a big part of her marketing by creating commercials and flyers to help promote Coffee Cove. Their daughters, Sarah Jane and Norah Jane, can often be seen in the shop helping their mother out with small projects. Waggoner’s goal is to show that this a family friendly shop, and all children are welcome with their moms while they enjoy a beverage and hang out with other mom friends. “We also want to show support for hard working students who need a place that gives them fast and free wifi and also to wind down from studying all day,” says Waggoner. The shop serves pastries, muffins and homemade pop tarts delivered fresh daily from Scratch Bakery in Kansas City. They serve homemade biscuits and gravy on Saturdays and are open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sundays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Benefits of Honey WORDS SIDNEY LEO
Honey has been around for thousands of years and has been used in almost every culture around the world. Many people use it to sweeten food and beverages, but did you know honey is one of the top superfoods used to treat countless health conditions and boost overall health? Honey contains 18 amino acids, and it has antioxidant and antibacterial properties that help fend off harmful pathogens. It can also be used to treat a wide-range of aliments such as healing wounds and burns, athlete’s foot, sore throats and even a hangover. Local honey taken for two months before allergy season can actually lessen allergies, by helping your body grow accustomed to the pollen and immunizing your body against them.
Honey is great for your skin Did you know that raw organic honey is great for your skin too? Honey has natural antibacterial properties, so it is an effective acne treatment option, and it is loaded with antioxidants and enzymes, so it helps boost your skin’s immunity and fights free radicals to help slow down aging. Honey is also very moisturizing and helps eliminate dead skin cells. Try a honey mask with yogurt or fresh aloe for additional skin benefits. 58
