Spring Sprang Early! S

ince my crocuses poked their golden and purple blooms through the soil on February 29 and my daffodils were blooming on March 6, I feel like we’ve enjoyed the earliest spring on record and the (very limited) color in my gardens peaked far too early. But either way, it’s got me in the mood for gardening. And by that, I mean I’ll pick up sticks in the yard, pull some dead leaves away from my hosta pips and daylily starts and I’ll cut back the English ivy that’s creeping up the tree trunks and over the sidewalk edges. Finally, I’ll gently fold down the leaves from my already-spent bulbs and bundle them with a rubber band; a little lesson learned from my master gardener mom.

This is the total extent of my gardening expertise, so I’ll leave my joy of gardens to the experts and encourage you to do a web search of “garden tours of Kansas City.” It is amazing how many clubs and societies exist in the Metro area with a focus on a love of flowers and foliage. There are water gardens clubs, train garden societies and garden groups that focus on historic homes. There are community gardens and parks featuring historic rose gardens. There are garden clubs who maintain the grounds near City Hall and the lovely flower pots around the downtown area and the list goes on and on. Get out there and take a tour, or if you’ve got a green thumb in need of flexing, join a group! My favorites for simple viewing are the gardens at Powell Gardens and the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Garden. And you know how I am…. I do love to send you out to discover the treasures of this amazing community in which we live. If you haven’t visited both of these particular gems, please add them to your list. In my grey-thumbed humble opinion they are at their peak in May, June and July, but they look beautiful through the fall because they’ve got experts who know how to do more than plant a few bulbs, (she says with a bit of regret and remorse.)

that she was one of the highest scoring entrants in Missouri. Herrera advanced to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and other requirements: including a letter of recommendation, student activities and leadership, and her own essay. “It’s not at all surprising to see Carolyn in the National Merit Finalist standing,” says SCA Secondary Principal Emir Ruiz-Esparza. “She has always demonstrated an incredible tenacity academically and as a National Merit Finalist, her God-given talents intellectually are validated as well.”

THE SUMMIT CHURCH HOSTS FEED THE NEED BANQUET The Summit Church (Lee's Summit United Methodist) hosted their annual Feed the Need banquet at John Knox Pavilion in February. The event raised $60,000 that will be given to local charities fighting hunger, homelessness and poverty. The evening included a silent auction, formal dinner and finished with a live auction. All auction items were generously donated and monetary donations were accepted leading up to the event. The 2016 recipients include Lee's Summit Social Services, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, Neighbor2Neighbor, Lee's Summit Elementary and Project HOPE.

Making a HUGE Impact on little Lives We have our fundraising breakfast on April 14th, called Light of Hope, and the event is free and open to the public, It's the city's largest fundraising breakfast and attracts more than 1,100 people. teve Fitch vividly remembers what it was like to be a child awash in

the foster-care system. Even years later, now a successful businessman, Steve acknowledges how his experience helped mold him into the person he is today. “Having gone through the experience of being a foster child and knowing what an impact certain adults had on me during that time, I’ve always remembered that,” he says. Steve wanted to pay it forward, and hearing that CASA needed volunteers—especially male volunteers—he signed up. And what an extraordinary way to give back: CASA stands for Court-Appointed Special Advocates for Children and acts as a child’s voice while they’re under court protection due to cases of abuse or neglect. In a time of upheaval, uncertainty, and fright, CASA volunteers are a rock, a safe haven to which these children can turn. There are 940 CASA organizations across the county, but the one in Jackson County is among the largest. Not quite half of the children in the charity’s care are

below the age of 5, though it serves those 0 to 21. Since its inception, more than 20,000 children have been helped thanks to the organization. Last year alone, some 1,149 were aided. “The Court appoints children to CASA,” Martha explains. “We have more than 380 volunteers who work individually with a child or family set. It’s the volunteer’s job to know everything about that child and his/her situation, including medical needs, family background, etc. Our volunteers talk to the children and the adults in their lives, they visit them wherever they’re living, observe, interview, view doctor’s reports, visit with teachers and principals—whatever needs to be done to have a clear understanding of what’s going on with that child. All of that information is then relayed back to the judge.” CASA provides each child with a three-person team, including a CASA volunteer, a case supervisor, and a CASA staff attorney. This is in addition to their assigned social worker from the court, who usually balances more than 20 other cases. So you see the difference a CASA volunteer would make. The volunteer becomes that child’s voice and advocate, and the insurance that he or she won’t be lost in the shuffle of the system. While Steve has only been a volunteer for a few years, he’s only on his second case. (Most cases last between 15 to 18 months.) His CASA work only requires about 10 hours a month, and the hours are very flexible. “I’ve told people that it’s the greatest feeling you can have, being able to

the past 4 years, 95% of children with a CASA volunteer did not re-enter the Jackson County courts. Volunteer training involves a mere 20 hours of classroom time, some online classes, and is offered monthly. Volunteers are able to maintain their careers while helping, and each is supported by staff every step in the process. Funding for this amazing organization comes from foundation grants, support from large corporations, and several very successful fundraising events, like Carnival for CASA in Lee’s Summit at Paradise Park. But as CASA’s caseload grows, so does its need for additional funds.

THE FOUNDERS THE FOUNDERS

Kate Valentine grew up in Kansas City. She met Andy Spade in 1983 at college and they moved to New York in 1986, when Kate started her career as an accessories editor at Mademoiselle. She saw a need for practical, stylish handbags and decided to create a smart, well-edited collection. She and her husband, Andy, began the company kate spade. They were joined by their mutual friend Elyce Arons and Paola Venturi when they began to make shoes. The company grew to hundreds of stores internationally with a unique identity, inspiring countless other young women to begin their own businesses. Kate and Andy sold kate spade in 2006 when their daughter was two. Kate now joins her friends and partners to create Frances Valentine. Andy Spade grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona. While working as a creative director in advertising, he and Kate co-founded kate spade, then created the men’s brand, Jack Spade. Andy is also a partner and co-founder of Partners & Spade advertising studio, in the art space Half Gallery, and in the pajama brand, Sleepy Jones. He’s produced a number of photography books and written several award-winning short and feature films. He is a co-founder of Frances Valentine. Elyce Arons grew up in Kansas. She and Kate met at The University of Kansas as freshmen. She came to New York City to work in fashion marketing at J.G. Hook, and Marithe & Francois Girbaud, joining her old friends Kate and Andy in their new company kate spade as their partner and head of operations. She left with them when her youngest daughter was two. She joins them again to create Frances Valentine. Paola Venturi grew up in Remini, Italy, in a town and a family with a legacy of making shoes. She studied at the Ars Sutoria in Milan and the School of Arts in Rimini. She designed shoes for Sergio Rossi in Italy, and Calvin Klein in New York, joining kate spade as design director for shoes in 2000. She left kate spade with Kate, Andy and Elyce, designing shoe collections at Te Casan, at Via Spiga and at Prada, leaving Prada to co-found Frances Valentine.

Financial Buzz

Gen X’ers Must Juggle a Variety of Financial Issues

ARTICLE PROVIDED

I

f you’re part of “Generation X” — the age cohort born between the mid-1960s and the early 1980s — you’re probably in one of the busiest phases of your life, as you’re well into your working years and, at the same time, busy raising a family. But just as you’re “multi-tasking” in your life, you’ll also need to address multiple financial goals. In seeking to accomplish your key objectives, you may be asking yourself a variety of questions, including the following: • Should I contribute as much as possible to my IRA and 401(k)? In a word, yes. Your earnings on a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and a 401(k) grow on a tax-deferred basis, so your money can accumulate faster than it would if placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. Plus, since you typically make 401(k) contributions with pretax dollars, the more you contribute, the lower your taxable income. And your traditional IRA contributions may be tax-deductible, depending on your income. If you meet income guidelines, you can contribute to a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earnings, provided you meet certain conditions. • Should I put away money for my kids’ college education? It’s not easy to fund your retirement accounts plus save money for your children’s college education. Still, college is expensive, so if you feel strongly about helping to pay for the high costs of higher education, you may want to explore college funding vehicles, such as a 529 plan, which offers tax advantages. • Should I pay down my mortgage or invest those funds? Most of us dream of freeing ourselves from a mortgage someday. So, as your career advances and your income rises, you may wonder if you should

26

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | April 2016

make bigger mortgage payments. On one hand, there’s no denying the psychological benefits you’d receive from paying off your mortgage. However, you may want to consider putting any extra money into your investment portfolio to help as you work toward your retirement goals. Work with your financial advisor to determine what may be most appropriate for your portfolio. • Do I have enough insurance in place to protect my family? You may hear that you need seven or eight times your annual income in life insurance, but there’s really no “right” figure for everyone. You may want to consult with a financial advisor to determine how much life insurance is appropriate for your needs. • Am I familiar with my parents’ financial situation and estate considerations? Now is the time to communicate with your parents about a variety of issues related to their financial situation and estate plans. The more you know, the better positioned you’ll be to provide assistance and support if and when it’s needed. Just to name one example, you should inquire of your parents if they’ve designated a durable power of attorney to make financial decisions for them in case they’re ever incapacitated. By answering these questions, you can get a handle on all the financial issues you face at your stage of life. It may seem challenging, but taking the time now can help you better position yourself to reach your financial goals.

What is the second most common type of family law case? Stange Law Firm, PC

When people think about family law, they often think about divorce first. Divorce is obviously a common family law case. It is probably the most common type of family law case out there. Next to divorce, the second most common type of family law case in the opinion of some are paternity matters. With forty-percent of all children in the United States being born out-of-wedlock, paternity cases are on the rise. Paternity cases generally compromise child custody and support cases amongst unmarried parents. When unmarried parents have children, or split after residing together and are unmarried, custody and support issues

become important. In these cases, the parties need a custody and child support order regarding their children. The parties need to know when the children will be with one parent versus the other. This is known as physical custody. The parties also need to know how decisions are made for the children. This is known as legal custody. Additionally, in many cases, the father may not even be on the birth certificate. Even if the father is on the birth certificate, that doesn’t give the father enforceable rights to their child without a custody order. On the other hand, in many cases, the mother may be concerned about child support. Paternity cases can also deal with genetic testing in cases where paternity is in doubt or in dispute. This can be a

real issue in some instances. So, when you are thinking about family law, next to divorce, think about paternity cases. SIMPLIFY YOUR STUFF, ORGANIZE YOUR LIFE & SAVE THE WORLD WRITTEN BY EVAN ZISLIS REVIEWED BY NICOLETTE TOUSSAINT

E

van Zislis had to live simply because the salary of a seventh-grade teacher in Aspen, Colorado didn’t provide for many housing options. After a frustrated search, Zislis was able to rent a 250-square-foot mining cabin without running water or 54

electricity for $50 a month. The historic cabin was discordantly sandwiched in between two contemporary houses in a neighborhood where the average home sold for $3.5 million. But that didn’t last. Zislis owned a hulking Great Pyrenees dog who developed

separation anxiety and “howled like a fire engine” when left alone. Elliot got his master frequently evicted, and in the six years Zislis lived in Aspen, he moved 13 times. Little did Zislis suspect that the lessons learned from that minimalist, gypsy lifestyle CONTINUED >

would lead him to becoming a best-selling author, professional organizer and lifestyle coach. After its April 2015 launch, Zislis’ book ClutterFree Revolution: Simplify Your Stuff, Organize Your Life & Save the World, rocketed to the top of Amazon.com, immediately becoming an international best-seller in eight countries. The book was recently featured in Inc. magazine and Interiors Colorado. The book’s popularity stems from the fact that it’s a tough-love pep talk for American families, the quintessential pocket guide for clearing out, getting organized and thriving with less stuff and more life. As Zislis puts it, “ClutterFree Revolution is a conscious consumer's manifesto - an invitation to a life-transforming paradigm that is designed to remind us of what matters most, and that is: who we love, what we do, how and why we live, because everything else is just stuff.” Zislis was inspired to write the book in part because he’s a father. He says, “As I watch my 5-year-old daughter examining a fat caterpillar on our front porch, sandy curls blowing across her spellbound face as she watches a hundred tiny feet exploring the contours of her hand, I am filled with overwhelming joy – and also an unsettling fear of what may cross her path. I am no one special; I am just one man. My sole purpose in life is to protect my child from harm and guide her in a direction of health and happiness.” Around the time of his daughter’s birth, Zislis started a consulting firm. Working with households and businesses as a professional organizer, he discovered that “so much of who we are revolves around what we have.” He notes, “It turns out, that those things have become toxic distractions from what matters most.” That insight is the book’s central theme. ClutterFree Revolution is not about tidying up. It’s a practical guide for becoming conscious consumers committed to understanding the global impact that we have when we shop. Zislis asks us to become more intentional about what we buy, why we buy, where we buy, and from whom. Casey Sheahan, the former President and CEO of Patagonia, Inc., calls ClutterFree Revolution, "A must read for every household in America."

The Range Rover Sport SVR Performs Like a Sports Car ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | April 2016

N

eck-snapping acceleration and cackling exhaust pipes are the first signs that the Range Rover Sport SVR is a performance car dressed in SUV clothes. The snarling 550-horsepower V-8, borrowed from Jaguar F-Type, is capable of propelling this two-and-a-half-ton rig to 60 miles per hour is 4.5 seconds and has a top track speed of 162 mph. The eight-speed automatic is a perfect partner. While the notion of creating a high-performance SUV may seem like a contradiction, it’s the price of admission to the luxury class because BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Jeep all have one. The SVR comes from Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division. It was chosen as Four Wheeler of the Year by Four Wheeler magazine. Land Rover says the SVR completed a lap of the famous Nurburgring Nordschliefe racetrack in 8 minutes and 14 seconds, a time that is competitive with many sports cars. Large Brembo front brakes are installed to

cope with the higher speeds. Fuel economy is rated at 14 miles per gallon in the city and 19 on the highway. If you get frisky with the throttle, however, your mileage will be considerably less. The SVR is more than a road burner; it also has off-road chops although I wonder about the wisdom of taking a vehicle this expensive into the woods or over rocks. Land Rover prides itself on delivering off-road capability on all of its vehicles. An adjustable air suspension enables the vehicle to rise so it has 10.9 inches of ground clearance and 20 inches of wheel travel. The Terrain Response system lets the driver choose transmission, suspension and traction settings for optimum drivability in a variety of off-road conditions. Settings include Dynamic; Automatic; Rock Crawl; Grass, Gravel and Snow; Mud and Ruts; and Sand. The test vehicle, from Land Rover’s press fleet, was also equipped with lane departure warning, automatic parallel parking and 360-degree parking assist. The Range Rover’s interior is as plush as one would expect for a vehicle in this price CONTINUED >

Engine: 5.0-liter, 550-horsepower V-8 Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Four-wheel drive Wheelbase: 115 inches Curb weight: 5,148 pounds Base price: $112,345 As driven: $127,920 MPG rating: 14 in the city, 19 on the highway

segment. The two-tone sports seats have pronounced shoulder bolsters for support during high-speed driving. First-class materials are used throughout. Carbon fiber trim is used as a counterpoint to the leather and brushed aluminum. Knobs are used for the climate control, but navigation and audio are controlled by a touchscreen and I still find the menu system to be less than intuitive. The instrument cluster is a 12-inch Thin Film Transistor screen. The gauges are digital representations of analog gauges. The numbers on either side of the tachometer and speedometer needles grow slightly brighter as the needles sweep around each virtual dial. Upscale items included the heated windshield, Meridian audio system, adaptive cruise control, navigation and Bluetooth telephone connectivity. 60

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | April 2016

PRICE: The

base price of the test vehicle was $112,345. Options included the SVR’s more powerful engine, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, metallic paint, ebony headliner, black roof, carbon fiber veneer, heated windshield and a carbon-fiber engine cover. The sticker price was $127,920. WARRANTY: Four years or 50,000 miles. POINT: The Range Rover Sport SVR has a whopping 550 horsepower and a 162-mph top track speed, yet it is capable of serious off-road activity because the air suspension increases ground clearance and the Terrain Response System has settings for nearly any condition. COUNTERPOINT: High-performance luxury SUVs seem like expensive toys.

Parting Thoughts

Gardening Success is a Fluid Situation WORDS DENISE SNODELL

A

ll along I considered hostas the lazy gardener’s hero. These attractive, leafy plants thrive in the shade where many other pretty things will not. They sprout flowers now and then, and best of all, they come back every year. Plant once, kick back forever, I thought. I was so buzzed by the idea this elegant ground cover would reappear every spring. I would look like a pro, yet all I had to do was maybe throw in a little fertilizer, and then toss enough water their way. That was only if it didn’t rain enough. Each spring, as the shade took over my back and side yards, I planted even more hostas. I discovered varieties with pretty patterns, and some solid ones with blueish or chartreuse tints. Some boasted interesting textures. Nature’s corduroy! (A description I assume master gardeners use.) No matter what type I selected, these beauties punctuated my yard with an air of paradise. Until… Wabbits. Last year, the deceptively cute furry creatures waged a war with me. The stole my easy hosta lifestyle. Imagine my shock the first time I approached my favorite original plant—the monster bloomer--only to see its massive outer leaves chomped to shreds. “Noooo, not my big blue floppy Dumbo ear!” (That’s the scientific horticultural term.) I dropped my hose and ran to the newer purchases on the side of the house, the ones I doggedly searched for in way too many nurseries. I had become picky about a certain crisp, creamy edged pattern on one particular variety, and I had to have it. (This one is known in the botanical world as The Cool Ones That Cost More.) 66

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | April 2016

My newbie plant$ were chewed down to the stems, like they were masquerading as chives. I hurried back indoors, revved up my search engine and found two recommended solutions: chicken wire or repellant spray. Chicken wire was out, for aesthetic reasons. Not to mention the effort. Imagine? But squirting a bottle of environmentally friendly stuff upon graceful leaves seemed simple enough. According to the directions, I just had to walk around, coat my hostas with a fine mist, and laugh maniacally at the little hungry fur balls sharpening their teeth beneath the bushes. “Go try some dandelions, you picky little hipsters!” Despite this battle plan, there were a few problems. The main one being I was late to the boxing match. Nothing is more disheartening than dousing an invisible layer of protection on a half-destroyed garden. If only I had paid attention the previous week, before word got out on nature’s yelp reviews. However, the bigger glitch was me. Once I began spraying this “liquid chicken wire,” I was overcome. What was that…smell? I was hoping for something undetectable to humans, like a dog whistle, but for the nose. Or a scent similar to mosquito-repelling citronella, which is somewhat pleasant. But Eau de No Bunny? Even a Beatrix Potter plush toy would run away from its foul mist. Here’s the most delicate, glossy magazine way to describe my take on the scent: gentle pre-dawn wafts from the dampened streets of New Orleans’ French Quarter…the morning after Mardi Gras. That’s right: bottled hurl. So what’s this amateur gardener’s overall take on the liquid solution? It seemed to offer a total smack down on the problem. The stuff kept me out of the yard, so I didn’t even care if the hostas were there or not.
