There's no place like...
MAY 2016 editor
I
grew up on the movie The Wizard of Oz... back in the days when it was on TV once a year, and we’d make a whole neighborhood affair of the viewing. It holds an especially dear place in my heart because the little Kansas town I grew up in designated itself as Dorothy’s official hometown (never specifically named in the books/movie). The Chamber of Commerce moved a real farmhouse and windmill into town, constructed an actual yellow brick road and called it an attraction to draw people to our rural locale. I was the first “Dorothy” to give tours (at age 15). Yes. I wore the dress, the ruby red slippers and met several original movie stars at the grand opening. My picture was on the Chamber's promotional display for a cross-country tour. I also Photo by Freeland Photography performed in the musical, both as an actor and in the orchestra pit. So the phrase, “There’s no place like home,” is embedded in my DNA. “Home,” to me, is where my people are. For 18 years, we raised our kids in a waterfront home at Lake Lotawana, and honestly I always thought if we ever sold it, I’d move to Brookside or a downtown loft. But the year that actually happened (thanks to Frank Paszkiewicz selling it 3 days) and the opportunity to move arose, I just couldn’t. After driving around those places and admiring the unique real estate options, I realized I didn’t give a hoot about that. I was in love with the people I’d come to know in this community. Through this job, I’ve gotten to meet a lot of the incredible, deeply caring souls behind the scenes around here. And, oh, the Mayor’s Character Breakfast really makes me so proud to live here! (It's a must-attend if you haven't.) My church family had become my family. Our friends of nearly two decades… too treasured to leave. So I found a 1970s California split nestled in a quiet, big-tree neighborhood near downtown with great new neighbors and friends. I am enjoying working with many local folks to fix it up, including Virgil at Hearth & Home; Donna and Angela at Summit Flooring & Turf; Amy at Cameron’s; Sherry at Razzberry Whimzy; Debbie at Budget Blinds; Jack at Harmon Flooring; Glenna at Knobs & Locks; all the nice folks at Sherwin Williams; Chris at Wildcat Construction for custom stairs, columns and crown molding; Jason who constructed a built-in bay window bench; Marty Fiser Painting & Remodeling for help with the tall exterior; John at Higher Power Heating & Cooling; and many friends who’ve come to help scrape, sand, paint… There really is no place like Lee's Summit. No need to click our heels.

The Leader in Me, a FranklinCovey program, is a self-described transformation process that teaches leadership and life skills to students in more than 2,500 elementary and middle schools throughout the world. There are several The Leader in Me schools in the Metro area, including Olathe, Parkville, Independence, Grain Valley, Lee’s Summit, and Kansas City, Missouri. The goal of The Leader in Me program is to integrate leadership development, curricula and traditions at each school which, in turn enhances relationships, transforms culture, and motivates staff members and students to value and develop not just study skills, but leadership and life skills. Though FranklinCovey draws inspiration and guidance from various leaders in the fields of business and education, Steven Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a key component in the process and implementation of the programs. Mark Heck, principal of Forest View Elementary School in Olathe, was introduced to The Leader in Me after he was named as principal-to-be of Forest View. “I thought it was a perfect fit for what I was about to do: create a brand new school from the ground up--its culture, its philosophy, and its foundation,” says Heck. “When I started interviewing staff,

n women hormonal imbalance may cause symptoms such as night sweat, sleeplessness, lack of energy, forgetfulness, anxiety, depression and lack of libido. Bio-identical hormone therapy seeks to return women to natural hormone balance. Hormone pellet dosage is individualized for every woman. At his south Kansas City office Dr. Michael Barnthouse personally places the hormone pellets under the skin using a mild local anesthetic. For most women the benefits of pellet therapy will last 4 to 6 months or longer. Bio-Identical hormones are natural plant derived compounds that have the same molecular structure as those made by the human body. Unlike synthetic hormones, our bodies can readily recognize and metabolize them. Bio-identical pellets have been used successfully by patients throughout Europe, Japan and the United States since the 1930s. Michael Barnthouse, M.D. is a certified SottoPelle provider. SottoPelle bio-identical hormones are made by compressing natural bio-identical hormones into very small pellets. All ingredients are extracted from natural plants and made into a usable form. All ingredients in the pellets are FDA approved and regulated. SottoPelle uses only the highest grade of natural hormones that are all completely bio-identical. No binding agents or chemicals are used in the pellet production process that are not 100 percent

natural bio-identical making them the purest bio-identical pellets on the market. SottoPelle bio-identical pellets are analyzed by an independent lab for quality. SottoPelle bio-identical hormone therapy is unique in that it allows for a consistent absorption of hormone therapy on a continuous basis. Hormones are released in the right amount to maintain normal hormonal physiology based on the demands of your body at a particular time. The pellets reproduce steady and consistent serum levels and therefore are biologically available whenever needed. Bio-identical hormone therapy is found to be both effective and safe. Side effects are found to be rare. If any side effects do occur, changes can be made with subsequent pellet insertions. By balancing your hormones we can help you achieve a level of well-being you haven't felt in ages. Along with hormone balance, proper nutrition, staying active both mentally and physically and maintaining strong relationships are all vital to your total health. he late Anne Frank once noted, “No one has ever become poor by giving.” The Rob Ellerman Team with Reece Nichols has embraced that statement tenfold and through its accomplishments in giving, great success has been realized. However, success for this team does not just equate to its bottom line or the countless awards that adorn walls. This team’s success means it can generate more opportunities to give back to the communities they compassionately serve. It’s no secret that The Rob Ellerman Team, established 14 years ago and headquartered in Lee’s Summit, is Kansas City’s premier real estate group, serving metro Kansas City and surrounding areas. Whether buying or selling a home, this experienced group of 62 real estate agents can help you successfully navigate the process by providing the right tools, education, guidance and resources. These dedicated professionals will assist you in selling your home quickly and for the right price and can also help you through the home buying process. Because of Ellerman’s drive for finding new and innovative ways to serve clients, builders and the team itself, this group has become
one of the fastest growing real estate teams, and in 2014 realized $155.3 million in sales and 628 homes sold, moving up from #29 to #24 in the country, according to the Wall Street Journal. The team is the #1 team in Missouri and #2 throughout the metro area for the fourth year in a row, closing out last year with $194.3 million in sales and 792 homes sold and as of the end of March, had $89.2 million in sales and 301 homes. As this team continues to grow throughout Kansas City, expanding to more than 30 new home communities as the new home market continues to gain velocity, they are also putting the forces in motion to move into other markets, including Destin, Florida and Los Angeles, California. However, their hearts belong to this city they call home, and to that end, the team has combined its efforts in numerous charitable endeavors, bringing people together to share their voice and work simultaneously for a greater impact CONTINUED > in driving change.

“We’re like-minded people,” emphasizes Denise Sanker, lead listing agent in the resale market. “Rob is all about putting people first. When we are working with clients, we always want to know and understand what the client wants first. We put our focus there. When we help them reach their goals, that is where our success comes. Rob is always giving in nature, making sure this team stays focused on community first, and that feeling of community expands with each person we add to the team.” Among the numerous local organizations to which this team contributes includes the YMCA Challenger Sports Complex, First Downs for Down Syndrome, The Down Syndrome Guild, Marian Hope, Special Olympics and Camp Barnabas. Additionally, the team has partnered with local builder Summit Custom Homes to help raise more than $900,000 for the St. Jude Children’s Hospital each year, not only through the support of the St. Jude’s Dream Home, but through many charity events specifically set up for this cause, including annual golf tournament and poker tournaments. Additionally, the team has donated funds to help with the pool renovations at the Boys and Girls Club and as donated nearly $100,000 to the Drumm Farm in the last two years and has also granted scholarships to high school seniors through the Rob Ellerman Team Scholarship Fund, designed to advance the academic achievement of local students. “Rob and his wife Erin are huge supporters of the children in our communities, as is the rest of the Ellerman Team Family,” says Sanker. “This year we just passed our 10th anniversary of fund raising for the YMCA Challenger Sports Complex. As one of our larger endeavors, this year’s Cheers for Challenger event raised $61,000. Through this group’s continuous and selfless acts of kindness, it has shown that when one person gives, two people receive. The real bottom line for this team cannot be read on a piece of paper. It can only be felt in one’s heart. “It’s always been about what we can do to help the people here, even through the smaller donations, such as sponsoring little league teams,” says Sanker. What’s a successful family law outcome? Stange Law Firm, PC
There are many different types of family law cases out there. From divorce, paternity, orders of protection, contested adoptions and other family law matters, many wonder what exactly a successful outcome may be. This question is especially true in cases that are not by consent. Contested cases can be very difficult. In many cases, the goals of the parties can be terribly adverse to one another. One result to one party may be viewed as a positive outcome, but to the other party, they may view the result from the exact opposite perspective. Family law litigation can also take a tremendous amount of time. Due to dockets being backed up in many jurisdictions, contested cases can often take
longer than a party would like. The overall cost of the case can often be more than what the party wanted to spend. And, of course, the emotional toll from contested family law litigation can be greater than what one might assume. There are certain contested cases that unfortunately have to be litigated. The goals, desires and viewpoints of the parties can be so diametrically opposed, that litigation might be the only way to solve it. The reality, however, is that satisfaction is seldom found from litigation. But for other parties, a successful outcome might be avoiding the contested family law litigation in the first place. In some cases, maybe the parties might be able to reach an accord outside of court that may negate the need for litigation. In other cases, it might be decide to undergo counseling before filing for divorce to see if their marriage can be saved. Lastly, in some cases, it might be a joint legal custody decision that

heir backgrounds are all different; however their goal is the same; to seek shelter and safety for their baby. Various reasons may bring them there: an abusive situation, rejected by family, being homeless or human trafficking. Whatever the reason may be Mother’s Refuge calls out to hurting young mother’s to provide an oasis of love and compassion. At Mother’s Refuge, the motto for the shelter rings true to all the scared and pregnant young women who enter its portal: Providing shelter, help and hope. “A shelter from the storms of life,” adds Susan Hill, volunteer and events coordinator for the facility. “I look at it as a ministry and that’s why I landed here. And it’s not just giving the girls a place of shelter from the elements of the world but we’re teaching them to prepare for life, how to support one another – it’s not just giving handouts, it’s giving them a hand up in this world.” Mother’s Refuge is one of two shelters in the Greater Kansas City Area that provides shelter and assistance for pregnant young women. The home which is nestled in a quiet neighborhood is large and houses 14 girls and their babies. Residents are allowed to stay up to a year after the birth of their child. Julie Johnson, case manager for the shelter says as soon as they are CONTINUED > enrolled in the program they get the girls on their feet.

“We get them enrolled in school, help them set goals in addition to helping them get their doctors’ appointments in order, insurance and everything in between.” The programs provided at the shelter are like a well-oiled machine. For some girls, it’s the first organization and order they’ve ever had in their lives. For others, it’s the first true type of love, compassion and ‘mothering’ they have ever seen or felt. Cassie Lara, education coordinator for the shelter guides the girls through a Five Step Program that allows them to gain a sense of accomplishment and respect for themselves and others. Divided into five weeks, the girls start out with earning fake money and encouragement slips by cleaning, cooking, doing chores around the house, doing homework, attending school and appointments. “I started as an intern here five years ago and just the environment and how the program educates and empowers the girls was a huge draw for me. They’re more than just a number or stat; they’re a human being and have needs and above all – need help.” As the staff offers help and assistance to the young girls, the community around them reaches out to help the shelter. Susan says that many businesses around the metro area donate their services and products to enhance the quality of living for the girls. “We appreciate when a business wants to come beside us as we work toward providing a loving
home for our residents and their babies,” she adds. Sallas Auto donated a car to one of the residents, Credit Law Center offers free legal and financial issues and Cole Termite Pest and Control donates regular inspections to name just a few. Mother’s Refuge goal is to help the young mother who has no place to go, but the reality is the shelters ‘mothering’ paves the way for the young ladies to learn what being a loving and caring mom is all about. “We want their lives to be better,” Susan says. “We want them to leave differently from when they came.” For more information about Mother’s Refuge, visit MothersRefuge.org or to donate services, please call 816.353.8070. All donations are greatly appreciated.

Renovate & Refine
For Sale or Staying Put ? IT’S EASY TO IMPROVE YOUR CURB APPEAL ARTICLE LISA COOKE HARRISON
W
hether you are getting ready to put your home on the market or planning to stay where you are for another 10 years, when was the last time you stood across the street from your home and gave the front of your house an honest critique? So often we drive into our garage and don’t give the front of our house more than a second glance. It’s easy for it to start looking a little tired if we don’t give the area some attention. Consider spending an afternoon making a few improvements. ASSESS THE FRONT DOOR
-How long has it been since your front door had a fresh coat of paint? Whether you decide to give it a fresh new color or apply a new coat of the color you’ve had for seven years, you’ll notice an immediate improvement. The sun fades dark colors quickly so your once-black, glossy door might be looking rather flat and grey after just a few years. -A new wreath or floral arrangement hung with wide ribbon is a great way to accent a front door. -Consider new hardware, a fresh welcome mat or an updated lighting fixture to update your entry. -While you are improving this area, look at your house numbers. Can they be easily seen from the street or have bushes grown to obscure them? DITCH THE LOOK OF A USED CAR LOT

the garage and make room for a car or two. Nothing sends the message that you don’t care about the look of your home like a driveway and curb constantly filled with cars that could be in the garage. -If your house is going on the market and your street is lined with cars owned by neighbors, consider asking them to park in their driveways for a month or two to improve the overall look of the street. WHERE’S THE GREEN?
-You may not be a gifted gardener but that doesn’t mean your house need send that message. Think about adding a few containers with seasonal plantings. Be sure to vary the height of the plantings in the pots. -If there are bushes along the front of your house, is it time for a trim? Bushes that have been allowed to grow more than 5-7 feet tall are probably higher than was intended when they were planted. Are your bushes more than 20 years old? It might be time to remove them and start over. And are your overgrown bushes making it difficult for people to walk on the sidewalk leading to your front door? If so, it’s definitely time for a trim.

ADD A FESTIVE FOCAL POINT
-Consider a fountain, cement sculpture or a piece of outdoor art to add a touch of whimsy to the front of your home. A birdbath, f lag pole or wind sculpture can be just what your street view needs. Maybe a row of decorative landscape lights will do the trick. Not only will they add a touch of style but they’ll accent your walkway or garden at night.

JAGUA R
JAGUAR’S REDESIGNED XF KEEPS ITS SPORTS-CAR SOUL ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
T
he Jaguar XF has been redesigned for 2016 with a new aluminum-intensive architecture, revised exterior and the choice of two supercharged V-6 engines.
56
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | May 2016
Jaguar has often used aluminum to reduce weight, and the all-wheel-drive XF is 265 pounds lighter than the outgoing model. The rear-wheel-drive version is 132 pounds lighter. Lighter weight means better fuel economy and the new car is rated at 20 miles per gallon in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. In addition to the new aluminum-intensive architecture, other changes include a more vertical front end, shorter front overhang, a 2-inch longer wheelbase and new rear quarter windows. The XF still has the soul of a sports car lurking inside its svelte sedan body. Nearly ideal weight distribution enables the car to tackle turns with confidence and security. Jaguar’s press materials indicate that “aerodynamics are improved by using vents in the front bumper to channel air over the front wheels. This helps to prevent the turbulent wheel wake from disturbing the smooth laminar airflow passing around the car.” There are four trim levels, each available with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $51,900 for the 340-horsepower Premium and top out at $65,700 for the 380-horsepower all-wheel-drive S. The car I drove from Jaguar’s press fleet was a rear-wheel-drive S with the 380-horsepower, supercharged V-6 and an eight-speed automatic transmission. For added security in all the warmest of climates, I would opt for the all-wheel-drive version as long as the additional $3,000 is not a wallet buster.

Driver’s Notebook
(CON TI N U ED)
Performance and handling are balanced with comfort and enough room for four people to ride comfortably. Thanks to supercharging, the power band is wide enough so that you don’t have to work the engine hard in everyday traffic. The eight-speed automatic transmission is a perfect match for this engine. Jaguar says it shifts “in just 200 milliseconds, or four times faster than the average human resting heartbeat.” Shift paddles on the steering wheel enable the driver to take control at any time. The test car’s cabin was pleasant and serene. The instrument panel now has a curved design that is similar to that of the XJ, and it extends into the door panels. Vents in the instrument panel open when the car is started and close when it is turned off. The main instrument cluster is a thin-film-transistor LCD panel that looks like an analog speedometer but its appearance and function can be changed. The audio and navigation systems are controlled through a 10.2-inch touch screen or by knobs on the lower part of the instrument panel. Jaguar’s menu system always seems a bit complex so having redundant switches for the climate control is helpful. Wind and road noise are nicely muted and the seats are widely adjustable. The leather seats have excellent lateral and lumbar support. Keyless entry, heated front seats, split-folding rear seats and a Meridian audio system were part of the test car’s standard equipment. Navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, Sirius satellite radio, blind-spot monitor and a rearview camera were also included. PRICE: The test car’s base price was $62,700. Options included black metallic paint, black trim, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, electric rear sunshade, four-zone climate control, suede cloth headliner, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, park assist, head-up display and black 20-inch wheels. The sticker price was $75,145. WARRANTY: Five years or 60,000 miles. POINT: The restyled XF S bears a strong resemblance to the previous model but it is sleeker, lighter, longer and better looking. The supercharged V-6 delivers ample power at all speeds. The aluminum architecture saves more than 200 pounds and that results in improved fuel economy. COUNTERPOINT: The all-black test car needed some bright accents to give it more personality.

Parting Thoughts
The Things We Collect WORDS MOLLY WILLIAMS
I
n the lobby of the library in my neighborhood, there is a square glass-topped display case with the intriguing sign “Things People Collect.” It draws me every time I'm there, to peek into the curious favorites of other people’s keepiness. I have dawdled over marbles in every color and pattern, vintage ceramic flower planters shaped like lambs and ponies, and a dizzying array of Pez dispensers. I once installed my own collection there for a smug month; miniatures from dozens of places I have visited around the world, such as a pinkie sized Eiffel Tower and Plymouth Rock as a pebble. I like my miniatures because they are, of course, small, and they remind me warmly of places and things we did there. Noble purposes for a collection. Why we keep what we keep is a mystery. I mean collecting, not its more insistent and unwelcome cousin, hoarding, which by now has its own entry in the DSM5, and differs in many respects, including that collecting is usually by choice, not compulsion. Not all collecting is by choice, of course. Once you admit to liking a particular category of things, mere affinity can swiftly be transformed into collecting by well-meaning friends who are relieved to have a ready gift idea. That is how my mother started her girlhood collection of kitschy salt and pepper sets, although she soon realized she liked the idea of them more than the reality. Reversing that perception took her years of disappointed birthdays. Maybe we keep things that remind of us things we’ve done or places we’ve gone, like my miniatures collection. Sometimes we are drawn to things that complement our inner being. My collecting coexists uneasily alongside a frequent exhibition of Spartanism, which does not yet have its own entry in the journals, but should, under Traits All Mothers of Small Children Should Have. With Spartanism, you determinedly eject things from your life, such as the day I emptied my house of all the unconnected-to-anything cords, wires, chargers to things that no longer charge and extra

long cables to A.V. equipment that doesn’t A. or V. Although my friend Anne believes I really do still have every stitch of clothes I have bought since the early 80s, I go through phases in which nothing in my or anyone else’s closet in my house is safe. I plead guilty to having pitched the paper while my husband was still reading it, and once got rid of a box of slides from my grandparents’ attic dating from the 50s without even opening it. I have also deliberately sabotaged my collections, in order to keep them from growing. My last kitchen redo included a non-magnetic stainless steel refrigerator; now I have nowhere to display my hundreds of magnets, so it is OK to stop bringing them home. Some simply die a natural death; with the demise of smoking in public watering holes, no one makes matches with clever bar logos anymore. Does that make my thousands of matchbooks more or less interesting? I am at the point in my life when purging is more attractive than acquiring. Unfortunately, so is my mother, and frequently her outlet is me; many the mom night when she brings another load of “my things,” which I reluctantly take, knowing these items of questionable sentiment will soon hit the Goodwill pile. I look forward to the inevitable downsizing of the house, as my clearing out will then finally have purpose and justification. Until then, I resolve that collecting will be as it should; narrow, focused, and only of those things meaningful and symbolic. However tempting it is to continue acquiring decorative plates for my kitchen, knowing that I now have enough is both liberating and satisfying. I will revel in the seashells I have without needing to pick up any more. I will collect experiences, and memories, and emotions; all things for which I have unlimited storage. Although I can never fit them in a display case, they will never be purged from my heart. Or have to be dusted.
