Lifestyle Letter

Letter From the Publisher

I

grew up in a large family here in Kansas City, and am one of 10 children. As you can imagine, we were constantly on the move as we were all in many different activities. My father made it a point to never miss a single one of our activities. No matter where it was, he was always there. From a young age I was impressed with my dad’s work ethic and integrity in everything he did. Even now he continues to impress me on a daily basis. He has always treated my mom with the utmost respect. He honors God with his whole heart and he guides our family with patience, wisdom, unconditional love and humility. He is the man I strive to be, and there is no other person that I look up to more than him. As I start my own family with my wife and two beautiful daughters, my biggest accomplishment in life would be to become the father and husband that my dad taught me to be through his example. This being Father’s Day and the men’s issue, I want to honor my father. He truly is an example of how a man should be. At Lifestyle Publications we are constantly growing. In the past seven years, we have gone from our first ever publication right here in Kansas City, to 40 publications nationwide. Our four magazines in Kansas City make it the largest distributed magazine in the Kansas City area. We have been listed as one of the fastest growing companies on the Inc. 5000 list, which is exciting milestone. During those years, I have had the privilege to work with Lisa Harrison, my Editor in Chief. We are going to miss her and wish her the best in her future endeavors. When one chapter closes, another one opens, so I am pleased to introduce you to two of our newest members of the Lifestyle family. Angela Broockerd will be the Creative Director for the publication, and Paul Versluis is our Director of Photography. Both Angela and Paul are assets to the company and their creativity and love of the city will be evident to you in our future publications. We are excited to welcome them to our team.

This year’s manly man issue was such fun to put together because like my family, our community is filled with unique and accomplished men with great stories. And after seven story-filled years, it will be my last issue with Lifestyle Publications. Thank you for helping me bring a glimpse of our great community into your homes each month. I’ve appreciated the monthly feedback and the story suggestions you’ve sent my way in a steady stream over the years. We’re “Inspired by Community” here at Lifestyle Publications, but I have to admit, more often than not I’ve been inspired by you! Thanks for the memories, and I’ll see you around town!

Inability to compromise is a cause of divorce Stange Law Firm, PC

There are many causes of divorce that studies and individuals would cite as the reason for the breakdown of marriages. From financial disagreements, lack of intimacy, to growing apart, lack of commitment, adultery or having different priorities, many would point to different events or reasons. One important and oftenoverlooked reason for divorce is the inability for parties to compromise to help resolve disputes. In many marriages, people may feel as if they are not being heard. Many would similarly report that there were severe communication difficulties in the marriage. Over time, these communication problems can cause many marriages to go into a downward spiral.

These communication difficulties can often be the first problem in a marriage that can result in the other causes that many would cite. In other words, the communication problems, and inability to compromise, can be the first domino to fall. Once it falls, it can result in the lack of intimacy, the adultery, the growing apart, the financial difficulties and the other actions that result in the divorce. Ironically, when the marriage gets so bad that a divorce is filed, there is a belief of many that the parties should settle quickly and amicable in order to end their divorce. Of course, settlement is a positive development for most parties, if a settlement is possible. No rational person would want to spend lots of money on attorney’s fees — and expend lots of emotional energy with a contentious divorce. The reality is, however, that a settlement isn’t always easy for people who had communication

problems in the first place. When the couple couldn’t communicate and compromise before, why do many think they can do it now when their property and debt is Stange Law Firm, PC at stake, custody of their children is in play, and many other items Lee’s Summit Office that can cause individuals signifi256 NE Tudor Road cant angst? In addition to doing arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery, I also perform many anterior approach total hip replacements and total knee replacements. These past twenty-five years have allowed me to be affiliated with several sports teams including St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Shawnee Mission East and Shawnee Mission South high schools. I was also the orthopaedic surgeon for the Kansas City Ballet from 1996 through 2007. I earned my undergraduate degree at Kansas State University and graduated from medical school at the University of Kansas, School of Medicine. I completed my residency at KU in orthopaedic surgery and then went on for my fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Sports Medicine. Keeping current with medical advancements is important; therefore, I am a member of AAOS) American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. For the past 3 years I have participated in Operation Walk USA. April 17 organization’s six-hour work day, a total of 49 National Honor Society (NHS) members, assisted by four Underwood Elementary students, completed a service project that will benefit the school now and in future years. Laura Hillbrand, LSNHS counselor, designed the landscaping project, also locating and purchasing the plants. During the work day, the students were assisted by Ms. Hillbrand; Chuck Stephenson, LSNHS NHS sponsor and physics teacher; and Dennis McFarland, LSNHS custodian. Austin Ahern and Daniel Lewis, National Honor Society members, were project leaders and organized the all-day event. Working together, the group added 369 plants and 40 large bags of dirt to the school’s outdoor campus. The group also raised approximately $650 to help fund the project through NHS fundraising with additional funding coming from the school.

CRAFT BEER AND HOME BREWING EXPANDS To meet with growing demand, Grains & Taps will move to a bigger location in downtown Lee’s Summit this summer. The 3-year-old business plans to continue their unique concept of housing both a bar and a home-brew-supply retail store in one space at its new location of 10 SW 3rd St., formerly home of Mariam’s Memories. “Variety has become one of the main desires of craft beer consumers. Our new space will allow us to showcase 24 rotating craft beer taps from local craft breweries as well as breweries worldwide, a big step up from the 11 we have at our current location,” says Brian Bixby, owner. They’ll expand their offering of beer sold for home enjoyment by offering a large selection of bottles and cans for “mix your own” six packs of craft beer and single bottle take-home sales. Plans include an appetizer menu to compliment the many craft beers available at the bar.

A VERY BUSY

MARK ALFORD KANSAS CITY’S LEADING MORNING MAN IS IN THE HOUSE!

ARTICLE ANN E. BUTENAS PHOTOGRAPHY JANA AYERS

H

e may have some strong family roots deep in the heart of his home state, but Mark Alford, a sixth-generation Texan, has placed some pretty significant roots in the hearts of those here in Kansas City. As one of the most recognizable faces on the landscape of Kansas City’s morning news teams, Alford brings a heaping helping of self-effacing humor, boyish charm, quick wit and an award-winning personality as one of the co-anchors of FOX 4 News each weekday from 4:30 – 9 a.m. As the longest running morning news anchor in the market, Alford has amassed more than 18,000 hours on-air and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

22

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | June 2016

If you have ever wondered if your favorite news anchors present in real life as they do on TV, we can assure you that Alford presents with pure authenticity both on and off the camera. His ability to engage in conversation on any number of topics, guiding the dialogue but not overwhelming it, easily make you feel welcome and at home in his presence. When he indicates he is truly passionate about all the things he embraces in life, you never have to question that ambition. He successfully wears multiple hats simultaneously, so keeping pace with Alford may seem a bit of a challenge initially, but his pure enthusiasm for everything he pursues is infectious and somehow you just want to come along for the ride just to see what will happen next. Alford, 52, studied political science at the University of Texas at Austin. He began his career in television in several Texas markets, including Waco, Dallas, Austin and Houston. When he arrived in Kansas City in 1998 with his family (wife Leslie Adkins and now grown children Mark, Jr., Alexandria and Spencer), he brought with him that approachable style we have all come to adore, accented with influences from those who have inspired him throughout his career, including Johnny Carson, Walter Cronkite and his own Uncle Jerry, who was an anchorman in Oklahoma City. “My on-air (persona) is a combination of influences from those three,” says Alford, who effortlessly balances straightforward commentary with perfect comedic timing. And while he continues to awaken each morning by 3 a.m. to deliver the newscasts, his day does not end after he goes off the air six hours later. In addition to informing and entertaining audiences each morning, Alford also operates Mark Alford Designs, a custom tailor and wardrobe consulting firm and his real estate company, Mark Alford Realty Group, a Reece & Nichols company, established in 2014. “I like to keep busy,” laughs Alford. Now that Alford’s real estate company is in full swing, he lends that same sense of fun, high energy and enthusiasm for which he is known on-air.

“People feel like they know me and trust me,” Alford smiles. “After all, I’ve been coming into their homes for 18 years now.” “People feel like they know me and trust me,” Alford smiles. “After all, I’ve been coming into their homes for 18 years now.” Alford’s real estate team has created a name for itself when it comes to making the home buying and selling process a fun and worthwhile experience. Because of his wide circle of influence, Alford reaches more people in the market and has tailored a unique concierge level service for clients provided by a team with more than three decades of local real estate experience. “We make the process fun and exciting,” notes Alford. When not tending to all of his endeavors, Alford, along with Leslie, enjoys working in his garden, strolling through the River Market, dining at Coal Vines on the Plaza or going for a ride on his Harley Davidson. So what’s next for Alford? “I don’t like to slow down,” he smiles. “But right now I’m happy with what I am doing. My life is full, and I love it.” For more information on Mark Alford Realty Group, visit them online at MarkAlford.ReeceNichols.com or call 816.251.1563. June 2016 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

PLAN A PIT STOP AT AMERICAN GARAGE BAR AND DINER ARTICLE ELIZABETH ROSENBERGER PHOTOGRAPHY MCKENNA MATHEWSON 26

I

f you haven’t yet visited this Lee’s Summit gem in the downtown area, (1 SE 4th Street.) you are missing out. Although the bar has been opened for business for the past three years, and visitors from all over the world have come to check out the unique building, the Diner is the hub of this establishment. Serving breakfast and lunch from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, the resounding country style f lavor and large portions remind me of my grandmother’s kitchen. The diner is closed on Mondays and opens on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. for their popular Taco Tuesday ($1.95 per taco). Russell DiMaggio co-owns the business with Charlie Arnone; however the Diner is operated by Patience Bear. Omelets, biscuits with sausage gravy, eggs Benedict ($6.99), and eggs any way you want to eat them are offered on a menu with a range of sides. For those looking for lighter fare, they offer oatmeal, fresh fruit and French CONTINUED >

toast. The French toast was light and full of flavor with the option to have it prepared with raisin bread, white, wheat or sour dough. I chose the ‘build your own’ omelet that included hash browns and toast. With more than 20 items to choose for your omelet, they can make it just the way you love it. I visited on a Sunday morning I ordered the special which was a strawberry crepe filled with strawberries, crème and pecans ($8.95). It was heavenly. American Garage Bar and Diner is the brain child of DiMaggio; a hometown guy with a love and respect for Pat Metheny, an American jazz guitarist and composer from Lee’s Summit. The building is filled with authentic memorabilia that is worth the visit all by itself. In fact if you’re a big fan of Antiques Roadshow, you’ll love this diner! It’s a memorabilia haven from every era. Lunch brings an offering of homemade chili, with or without beans, hand-breaded tenderloins that melt in your mouth, grilled hamburgers that reminded me of home and a southwest chicken sandwich that would satisfy any Cajun loving flavor addict. If you’re looking for an evening out with friends, the bar side of the Garage offers occasional local bands, Sunday Fundays, Happy Hour specials and more. However, it’s good to come a little early if you want a chance to sit at the most unique bar in the Midwest. Constructed from an original car lift, its unique concept is a testament of DiMaggio’s tenacity to stay true to his dream. Although the website for the Garage is under construction, you can join their Facebook page at American-Garage-Bar-andDiner to keep up with special events and happy hour specials. 30

Dedication, Determination and Drive THE LEE’S SUMMIT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PREPARES TO SAY GOODBYE TO PRESIDENT NANCY BRUNS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

N

ancy Bruns, president of the Lee’s Summit Chamber, is retiring after more than 15 years serving the organization, and nearly 30 years in the industry. Bruns herself points to her upbringing on a dairy farm near Concordia, Mo., as the foundation for her strong work ethic. It’s there that she learned many important lessons, molding her into the person she is today. “As soon as we were old enough, we would have chores,” recalls Bruns, the third child of four. “My brother and I lived outdoors and had a carefree life, but we also worked hard. I guess that’s

32

where I learned you could work hard and accomplish things, while still having a good time.” After leaving the farm, Bruns’ first job was with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. She started as a file clerk and moved up the ranks to become the first woman in management in the sales and marketing department as the assistant to the vice president. After returning to the Kansas City area, she spent a few years working for Lee Jeans. She frequently traveled to deal with sewing contractors, mainly in the southeast. Tired of the commute,

Nancy and her son, Kevin

"Together as a community we have done great budget, employing seven full-time and two part-time employees. Membership has doubled things and I’m to 1,000 members and the Chamber continues to attract businesses to the area. glad to have been “There have been lots of changes over the years. Businesses have had to tighten their belts and they don’t have as many a part of it all.” employees to get out and volunteer as in the 80s and 90s,” says Bruns kept her eyes open for a local opportunity. Little did Bruns know that when she answered an ad in the local newspaper for an officer manager position at the Independence Chamber that she would find her career path. “At that point in time, I thought all the Chamber did was answer letters from kids when they were writing papers and hand out maps. My, how much I have learned since then,” says Bruns. She eventually served as vice president of the organization before leaving in 1996 to become president of the Raytown Chamber. Bruns started as the president of the Lee’s Summit Chamber in 2000. At that time, the organization employed three full-time staff, operated with a $300,000 budget and had a membership of 500 members. Since beginning her tenure, the Chamber has grown immensely, gained financial stability and operates debt-free with a $1.2 million

Bruns. “Even with the popularity of social media, people still want to have personal interactions. They want to know who they are doing business with and develop relationships. I can’t imagine a time when chambers will not play a huge role in communities. It is so much more than just networking; it’s the legislative issues and organizing of people to get goals accomplished.” Bruns has been a successful leader throughout the years and has the accolades to back it up. Last year, the depot underwent renovations made possible by successful fundraising events, and additional staff was brought on to produce all special publications in-house. “I’ve always said I was going to end up at a chamber on the beach where I could just retire and stay,” says Bruns. “I even interviewed a few years back with one, but at the end of the interview, I had to ask why? Why would I want to leave a community that has embraced me and supported me for so many years? I may not have lived in Lee’s Summit all my life, but it is home to me.” After retiring, Bruns plans to continue traveling, one of her favorite hobbies, because “there are still so many places to explore.” “I have been blessed here in Lee’s Summit. I have had wonderful chairs of the board, board members, Chamber members and, very importantly, have hired really good staff. Together as a community we have done great things and I’m glad to have been a part of it all.”

A display last fall at the British Golf Museum at St. Andrews honored Tom Watson.

These bottles in the Glengoyne distillery show how whisky evaporates and gets darker as it ages.

’ve long wished to visit Scotland, to experience the culture and to see up close the ruggedly beautiful countryside and volcanic mountains such as Ben Nevis and Glen Coe. Oh yes, and to sample the whisky. Last fall my wife and I took a weeklong group tour of Scotland, and it was a low-stress, easy way to get acquainted with the country. Bus tours have their drawbacks — you can’t deviate far from the tour itinerary and schedule — but they are also appealing because everything is pre-arranged. Luggage is picked up and delivered to your room each day, many meals are included and there is very little time spent waiting in line at attractions because tours get preference. Our tour started in Edinburgh, and we arrived a day early so we would have time to adjust to the time change. After a day spent touring this ancient city, we hopped on the bus and headed for the mountainous Scottish highlands and our overnight stay at the Laggan Country Hotel near the tiny hamlet of Laggan. On the way we made a quick stop at St. Andrews, the home of golf. Despite a soft rain, being able to stand at the fabled 18th green and visualize Kansas City’s Tom Watson waving goodbye from Swilcan Bridge for the final time in 2015 sent a chill up my spine. We arrived at our Highlands hotel by mid-afternoon and after a brief rest we drove to nearby Aviemore for a 45-minute sheepdog exhibition by Neil Ross of Leault Working Sheepdogs. Scotland has more sheep than people and raising sheep is one of the predominant types of farming. Sheepdogs are a crucial part of tending flocks. Ross has more than a dozen dogs, as well as a few pups, on his beautiful farm near the heart of the Cairngorms National Park and he frequently hosts tour groups. With the virtuosity of an orchestra conductor, Ross commanded his dogs with whistles, hand gestures and occasional shouts. The precision with which the dogs rounded up and moved a small herd of sheep was startling. At one point in the demonstration, Ross had four dogs lie down about 20 yards apart while a single dog drove the herd back and CONTINUED >

forth between the dogs as if they were weaving through gates. Young pups were just learning and often took their lead from the older dogs. Our visit culminated with Ross shearing a sheep by hand. As the afternoon turned to twilight it was back to the inn for a wee dram of whisky to ward off the late fall chill before dinner. Like sheep, whisky (no e in Scottish whisky) is a staple of Scottish life and has been for centuries. Scotland’s earliest documented distilling of whisky dates to tax records of 1494, when Friar John Cor bought “eight bolls of malt to make aqua vitae (water of life).” The Scotch Whisky Regulations define “Scotch Whisky” as that produced at a distillery in Scotland from water and malted barley, processed, fermented and matured in Scotland for at least three years. Throughout our stay in Scotland I marveled at the vast array of whiskies that come from the more than 100 distilleries in five main whisky-producing regions. A small whisky shop in the mountain town of Pitlochry had an entire wall stacked floor-to-ceiling with boutique brands. CONTINUED >

SHEEPDOGS & WHISKY

(CON TI N U ED)

The St. Mary’s is the Cathedral Church of the Archdiocese of St. Andrew’s and Edinburgh.

The Glengoyne distillery north of Glasgow was founded in 1833. Our tour included a “wee dram” at 10 in the morning. The Glengoyne visitor center had several displays that demonstrated how whisky changes as it ages. It takes on a darker color from the sherry oak cask in which it is aged, and over time evaporation causes the volume to decrease. That explains why really some really old vintages are so expensive. Glengoyne sells its 35-year-old whisky for £2,850 pounds, or about $4,097 a bottle. There are as many sides to Scotland as there are brands of whisky and that means that a weeklong tour is just a “wee dram.” There are many more places to explore the next time, and I especially want to visit some of the smaller villages in places such as the Shetland, Orkney and Hebrides islands. Oh yes, and sample a few more whiskies.

n 1991, the view at Colbern Road and 291 Highway was vastly different than it is today. Back then this area was undeveloped, still a peaceful rolling countryside on the outskirts of Lee’s Summit. No Campbell Middle School, no library, no Paradise Park. The area caught the attention of a young couple at the beginning of their lives together. Jon and Juli Ellis were twentysomethings at the time, with an idea. "There wasn't as much to do in Lee's Summit for fun back then," explains Juli. A trip to Florida inspired the Iowa State agricultural education major Jon, who had a passion and gift for landscaping. “He was inspired by what he saw there at a mini-golf course: a lush garden with a waterfall feature. He thought maybe he could create a place that was both beautiful and fun back in Lee's Summit.” So they purchased the 14 acres and

set aside 2 for a mini golf course that they worked side-by-side to create and called it Putter’s Paradise. That heart-and-hands commitment from the Ellis family is what sets Paradise Park apart still today. “Jon designed every hole. He pushed the dirt and did everything,” Juli says. “We planted thousands of shrubs and trees. (There were more than 10,000.) Jon dug the holes, I put the plants in place, he covered it.” His young crew and Iowa family members came down and helped, each bringing their expertise to the project. The new destination felt so far from civilization, Juli says Jon was concerned. “He said, ‘Do you think they’ll find us?” People did indeed. Always with an eye to continual improvement, Jon guided the development through the years and eventually the couple made a major investment in expanding, with a vision to create a rich place for families to connect through fun and adventure. They began construction of Paradise Park in 2002, and opened the summer of 2004. CONTINUED >

An innovative and distinguishing feature of the new addition was the Children’s Edu-tainment Center (CEdC), which became Juli’s passion. She discovered the half-education, half-entertainment concept at an amusement industry conference. A CEdC facilitates parent-child relationships through engaging in activities together, enhances communication skills, and facilitates play so important to development. “I thought, ‘This is so cool! We need an edu-tainment center!’” she shares. The Family Entertainment Center offers older kids and adults a variety of activities, anchored by the Foam Factory, Rock Wall and Bumper Cars and outdoors includes Go-Karts, Laser Tag, Mini Golf, Batting Cages and a picturesque venue for “backyard” concerts and events. Every detail of every offering is designed with great intentionality and a core belief in the value of people and relationships, delivered by staff who really care and go above and beyond to make sure every guest’s experience is excellent.

“Our whole purpose is to create a fun place that is safe and clean for families and friends to have a good, wholesome family experience,” says Jon. “While simple on the surface, that means we’ve invested a lot of thought and time in cultivating the structure and culture that supports that goal.” They are constantly creating new attractions, the latest being a mission-based laser tag arena in the old fire station on the north side of the property. “We are excited to offer this new and exciting experience we’re calling Operation Laser Tag,” says Jon. family fun within our collection of family entertainment attractions.” Jon and Juli are still actively involved, and the Paradise Park family includes a great leadership team and hundreds of teens each year. It’s become a place where not just families but also businesses, schools and organizations come to build camaraderie and make memories. Lee’s Summit Chamber President Nancy Bruns shares, “Paradise Park has been an integral part of this community from the beginning and is a wonderful attraction for Lee’s Summit. It’s truly amazing how many events they have held to benefit the chamber, the schools and the other nonprofits in the community. The transition from Putter’s Paradise to Paradise Park was a huge financial investment and we are so blessed to have them in Lee’s Summit.” From a manicured mini-golf course and driving range on the outskirts of town, to a thriving facility where tens of thousands of people of all ages come to connect through fun, Paradise Park has become the heart of our community, a place where so many of us have made memories for a lifetime. Thank you, Paradise Park!

think of my drone as a flying tripod because I use it to get a camera up high and see things from a new perspective. I’ve had my drone, a DJI Phantom 2, for more than a year and while it is technically outdated now, it still yields decent still images with a little Photoshop work. The built-in camera can shoot video or still images and it is operated by a smartphone attached to the flight controller. I can see what the camera sees on the face of my iPhone, and a take a CONTINUED > photo by touching the screen.

Drones fit loosely into three categories: camera drones, toy drones and racing drones. Toy drones are generally priced less than $50. Racing drones are usually less than $500 and camera drones generally range from $400 to $1,500. Consumer drones use input from GPS satellites to maintain their stability and make them easy for a novice to fly. Many have features such as the ability to return “home to where it took off or the ability to follow a set course mapped out by the pilot on his phone or tablet. Some of the newest drones can be programmed to follow the user or fly a circle around a given point. Flight times vary by model but many camera drones can fly for 15-20 minutes on a battery charge. Most people buy more than one battery. DJI, a Chinese company, is the big daddy of consumer drones. The Phantom series has been extremely popular because it is relatively affordable and easy to fly. DJI has two versions of the Phantom, each with an improved camera, longer flight time and more sophisticated controls. The standard Phantom 3, now 52

reduced to $499, is excellent. The professional Phantom 3 is $999. The Phantom 4 is $1,399 and has a camera that can shoot 4K video or 12-megapixel still images. It can fly for about 28 minutes and has a maximum control range of 3.1 miles. Yuneec is another brand of camera drone that offers interesting features such as retractable landing gear and six rotors instead of four. Drones are a trendy toy and U.S. officials estimate that nearly one million consumer drones were sold last holiday season. That’s a staggering number and one of the reasons why the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) now requires all drones between 0.55 pounds and 55 pounds to be registered. Online registration is a snap and the fee is $5. I printed my permit and taped it to the top of the aircraft. The FAA regulations state that an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), more commonly known as a drone, shall fly below 400 feet, shall not be flown near people or stadiums, must be kept within visual line of sight and can’t be flown within five miles of an airport without notifying the airport or control tower before f lying. National Parks have banned the use of drones within their confines. A smartphone app, B4UFLY, is available so drone operators will know of restrictions in the area in which you want to f ly. Unfortunately, some drone owners ignore the regulations and have flown over crowds or near airports, endangering aircraft. Irresponsible piloting may well result in tighter restrictions. The city of Mission Hills was the first in northeast Johnson County to pass an ordinance that restricts the use of a drone to the space over the owner’s private property or the private property of someone who has given consent to the drone pilot. The ordinance does not allow use of drones over public property and limits flights to a height of 400 feet. The website MyFirstDrone.com is full of information, buying guides and how-to videos. 54

56

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | June 2016

G

od put them here for a reason. That’s the driving force behind the three dentists—Dr. James Elias, Dr. Kirk Opdahl, and Dr. Jeremy Bowen—who lead the team at Dental Arts. That reason is to make a positive impact on the lives of their patients and in the community at large by leveraging their collective talents in the fields of functional and cosmetic dentistry. On an individual level, they do that by truly listening to what their patients need. If that’s sedation because of anxiety or fear of dental procedures, they’re equipped with options to turn what might be a harrowing experience into a positive one, including music, back massagers, headphones, movies, nitrous oxide, and oral conscious sedation. Perhaps most importantly, they understand that the experience is different for each patient and they acknowledge that fears and anxieties about dental procedures are real. The three doctors don’t do it alone, however; rather, they have built an impressive team of talented, dedicated professionals of hygienists, office staff, and a care team that caters to each patient’s needs. “We take pride in what we do,” says Opdahl, “and we respect our patients. We respect their time and we do everything we can to make sure visits are as short and pleasant as possible.

“We know there’s a lot of need around the world, too,” says Opdahl. “Dr. Elias has traveled about 10 times to Africa, where he sets up free dental clinics for a week at a time. He’s also taken medical and dental students there, which has been an incredible adventure.”

We have a very gifted group of people who are each talented in different ways,” says Opdahl. “Some have master’s degrees, others have unique life experiences, such as being a former police officer or a leader in their church. Some are artists and others are educators. Each of them has distinctive skills and qualities that they bring to the practice. We understand that it takes many different people to make a great team, and we prefer that people simply be themselves— when we all use our own talents, we perform at our best,” he says. What they each share, despite their varied backgrounds and individual talents, is generosity of spirit. “We have a very generous team, which means that each of them has a heart to help others and to make a difference,” says Opdahl. That collective spirit shines through the various events the Dental Arts team takes part in. The practice adopts families every year for Christmas, making it a personal mission to provide gifts for those families—families who wouldn’t have gifts otherwise—to open on Christmas Day. “We know there’s a lot of need around the world, too,” says Opdahl. “Dr. Elias has traveled about 10 times to Africa, where he sets up free dental clinics for a week at a time. He’s also taken medical and dental students there, which has been an incredible adventure.” They’ve also organized and orchestrated a free clinic in the Kansas City area. One

weekend a year from 2009 to 2013, the team joined with local dental supply companies, such as Goetze Dental, to provide free dental services to those in need. Another clinic is being planned for August. Called MOMOM, it will bring more than 200 dentists, 75 hygienists, and more than 1,000 volunteers together to provide services to individuals who cannot afford regular dental care. It will be held close to the Dental Arts office, at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence.

“This event will be life changing for thousands of people,” says Opdahl. “Yes, thousands.” Services offered will include simple cleanings, extractions, fillings, and even some tooth replacement. “The last MOMOM event took place in Columbia, Missouri, and helped about 2,000 people. More than $1 million in free dental care was provided then,” says Opdahl. “We know all of this is possible through Christ, and that’s what we’re aiming for again.”

S

ometimes my wife and I don’t see eye to eye. Such is the case when it comes to automobiles. To her, a car is just a mode of transportation—a way to get from point A to point B. To me, a car is not just a way to get down the road, but rather a vehicle for excitement. I love to drive. In my 20s I owned a silver sports car that I drove whenever I had a spare moment. Twenty years and two kids later, I find myself driving an SUV. Now the time has come to look for a new vehicle. I need a family-friendly vehicle that that will still get my heart pumping. After much investigation and many test drives, I found the BMW 528i with xDrive. On the outside, the BMW 528i is a classically refined sedan that will turn the heads of other drivers. It comes standard with 17-inch wheels, automatic and adaptive xenon headlights, LED accent lights and LED fog lights. As soon as I opened the door, I was anxious to get behind the wheel. The spacious and comfortable cabin beckons you to sit in the captain’s chair. When I sit in a car for the first time, I like to familiarize myself with its features. The BMW 528i does not disappoint when it comes to high-tech features and creature comforts, including auto-dimming heated mirrors, automatic wipers, sunroof, dual-zone cruise control, power-tilt-steering wheel and iDrive interface with a 10.2 inch display. For the music lover, it has a 12-speaker sound system, aux-in jack and 20 GB of digital music storage. Now for the best part—I started the engine. As the motor purred, I could almost hear the 40 plus years of refinement that went into its development. I pressed down hard on the gas pedal. CONTINUED >

Driver’s Notebook

(CON TI N U ED)

I was amazed how quickly this large sedan accelerates. It is truly impressive that this car can hit 60 mph in just over six seconds. The BMW 528i is all of this, while maintaining a sensible mpg—around 30 combined. The 8-speed automatic transmission performs flawlessly. However, if you want a truer driving experience, you can opt for manual drive and use the steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters. You will feel like a rock star! This model has the xDrive moniker, which means it exhibits incredible handling in all weather, including Kansas City winters. The fine-tuned powertrain, suspension and steering system provide driving dynamics that are high precision while still smooth running. I could feel the sporty driving pleasure that the chassis transmitted from the road directly through the steering wheel. The end result is a vehicle that offers an exhilarating combination of sheer dynamism, comfort and everyday usability. When you are looking to buy your next family car, don’t settle for a boring old sedan or an adrenaline inhibiting SUV. Treat yourself to a luxury and pulse-boosting vehicle, the BMW 528i with xDrive. 60

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | June 2016

ithin a 30-minute drive, nearly a dozen public and private lakes offer spectacular views of the sunrise. There's something about watching a new day light up the sky and feeling the possibilities a new day brings as the sun inches up over the horizon. Find a lake, borrow a boat, or just sit on a dock, and make it a goal to discover a sunrise view that'll inspire you for the rest of the week!
