Lifestyle Letter
Letter from the Creative Director
JULY 2016 sales director
Matthew Perry | Matthew@LifestylePubs.com
I am thrilled to be joining the Lifestyle family as the Creative Director, and as a lifelong resident of Kansas City, I am even more excited for the opportunity to bring a taste of our community to your doorstep. Our neighborhoods and the surrounding area have so much to offer, and the rich diversity of talent, culture, life experiences and beauty of Lee’s Summit, are snapshots that I can’t wait to share with you in the issues to come. As my former titles of elementary school teacher, event planner and editor reflect, I thrive off of being creative, discovering and illuminating strengths in others and learning about people’s stories and what makes them tick. It is both fascinating and humbling for me to see the beauty and gifts each person possesses, and it is a true pleasure to get to shed a little bit of light on people in our community. I have the honor of working with the very talented, Paul Versluis, who is joining our team as the Director of Photography. If you are not already familiar with his work, you are in for a treat. He is truly an exquisitely talented photographer, as you will see in the issues to come. In honor of the 4th of July, it is a privilege to give you a view into the lives of a few of our local veterans who have served this great nation. I have always had such an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our country. There is no greater sacrifice then to risk your life in order to protect others. The team at Lifestyle Publications want to thank all of the veterans and their loved ones for the sacrifice and dedication they have made for our country. Personally, this spotlight on veterans is in honor of the friends and family in my life who have served or are still serving our country.

A massive military surge against the Al Qaeda led insurgency in Iraq took place in 2007. In December 2008, Tiehen’s unit was deployed to Mosul in Northern Iraq for a one-year tour. Primarily serving on base, he provided intelligence briefs and reports to commanders and units on patrol about the area, describing the enemy, their tactics and local populations. “At the time, Al Qaeda had largely been driven out of the capital city of Baghdad, but it still had a heavy presence in Mosul,” Tiehen says. “A lot of resources were focused to us, because we were in the spot where things were happening. It was Al Qaeda’s last stand.” After serving for a year in Iraq, Tiehen received additional training stateside.

While awaiting his honorable discharge, Tiehen was torn in pursuing a civilian career path. Cori Jo Hawkins
Local Musician Creates First Album
ARTICLE BRIAN ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY TREVOR HAWKINS

etween the sounds of the fiddle and the amazing stacking layers of four
part harmonies, bluegrass music has been winning hearts around the world since the 1940’s. The sound of bluegrass music has been growing exponentially over the past 25 years, and there is a whole generation of young musicians coming up because of this musical movement. Bluegrass music is truly an American art form. Its music today encompasses everything from the jamgrass of Yonder Mountain String Band to the tra-
ditional sound of Del McCoury to the more eclectic flavor of Trampled by Turtles. Cori Jo Hawkins, who is from Lake Lotawana and attended Lee’s Summit North High School, is a part of that growing movement. “I began learning how to play the fiddle when I was 7 years old, and I was bluegrass and classically trained. My dad played in a bluegrass band, so I grew up going to festivals all over the Midwest, jumping up on stage fiddling and singing with my dad,” said Cori. Since then, Cori has grown into a phenomenally- trained musician, and her incredible talent and unparalleled passion for music has been capturing audiences wherever she plays. “Having a hobby and a love for music that is so strong has given my life more meaning. 20
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | July 2016
“Learning how to play bluegrass gave me the foundation of how to improvise. Improvisation is the freedom in music. I have always enjoyed writing music, and it has helped me get through some of the best, worst and toughest times in my life.” It’s my identity, and it’s part of who I am. It has always given my life a drive and direction,” Cori says. Cori started off listening to bands like Alison Krauss and the Dixie Chicks. From there she began to enjoy the sounds of Jack Johnson, M. Ward, and Angus & Julia Stone. Her love for bluegrass has opened up doors for her to play all over the country, and in addition she has opened up for multiple big country artists like Clint Black, Alabama, Diamond Rio, Tracy Lawrence, Jack Ingram, Uncle Kracker and Easton Corbin, just to name a few. She is most excited about her newest project that she is currently working on called LOXO. “It has a folk/bluesy influence,” says Cori. “I am really taking it back to my roots. It is the most genuine expression of music I have done yet, and I feel empowered with every song I finish. Since I live on a lake, it has a lot of influence on my writing. I feel centered around water, and it always seems to seep into my writing.” The reason she chose the album title LOXO is because it is short for Loxodonta, which is the scientific species name for the African Elephant. When her album is finished, she will be putting a percentage of her album sales toward organizations that are trying to make a difference in saving African Elephants and Rhinos. Cori is currently teaching violin and fiddle lessons in downtown Lee’s Summit at Shining Light Photo by Ren Coker
Music. “The most important thing I stress and teach is learning the love of music. I want my students to love playing music,” says Cori. “I believe the violin is one of the hardest instruments to learn and master. I tell my students all the time that it is not a sprint but a long-distance run.” However, Cori believes that learning the violin at such an early age has allowed her to transition to other instruments pretty easily, as she enjoys playing the guitar, mandolin and banjo as well. You won’t want to miss her live at the Canoe Club at Lake Lotawana, on July 29th. If you are interested in booking, email her at cja464@gmail.com or call 816.809.2009. Making Memories With Kids at the Lake Diane and Jeff are known to their eight grandchildren as ‘DD’ and ‘Papa Jeff.’ Right away, they make young visitors at home by engaging them in lake life and all their home has to offer. Take a ‘green boat ride’ – sit on the dock and reflect on the water. You’ll save some gas not taking the boat out. Too cold to swim? Give kids a cup of ice and walk along the shore to spot water fowl and see how far you can toss the cubes. Create a fairy garden and go for walks to gather materials for it. Fairies love to wash their faces in acorn tops.
“It’s a very relaxed and casual barefoot atmosphere we enjoy here,” Harriman says. “We’ve appreciated the outdoor adventure the lake offers.” The Harrimans have undertaken three major renovations of Breezy Point in the 30-plus years they’ve lived there. Additions have expanded not only square footage but also character and a sense of the family’s playful personality and creativity. More than 25 years ago, Diane handed her three children markers and asked them to create a mural for the bathroom renovation. The children’s marker sketches of lake life were then transferred onto the white tiles that adorn the downstairs shower today. Six years ago, a renovation widened the garage, added height and additional space to upstairs rooms but also included secret hiding nooks for the enjoyment of the couple’s eight grandchildren. Meanwhile, the couple has been careful to preserve the original feel of the home. They have worked with the same architectural firm for all projects, referring to original home sketches and blueprints for reference, as well as working with Greg Smetanka Construction on all 3 remodels. Additions incorporate materials commonly used in the 1930s, such as the vaulted knotty pine ceiling in an upstairs bedroom and soapstone counters in the kitchen.

Open House (CON TI N U ED) In 1939, Charlie Daniels lived in the boathouse on the property while he built what he intended to be a summer relaxation spot for friends and family to relax by the water. Daniels’ original Breezy Point dock sign now adorns the street-side of the home above the garage, and the sailboat emblem still hangs in its original position facing the lake.
When the Harrimans moved into Breezy Point in 1980, they removed the jalousie windows in favor of floor-to-ceiling windows on the lake side of the home “to bring the outdoors in.” Their architect also re-exposed the columns on the lakeside of the home, revealing an original design element that had been hidden by previous owners. When they renovated the garage several years ago, they re-incorporated the original scallop wood trim above the doors. During an entryway renovation, the Harrimans were planning to tear out the knotty pine buffet in the casual dining area in favor of a coat closet for their new entryway, but couldn’t bring themselves to do it. ‘We had the crowbar up to it and were getting ready to rip it out but we just couldn’t,” says Diane. “We still don’t have a coat closet.” It is this sense of measured restraint -- fully living in the present while carefully honoring the past -- that make Breezy Point the inviting lakeside home it its today for the Harriman's family and friends. 26

Lindsey Wade, part owner of RW2 Productions and The Guild in the Crossroads, and his wife, Jennifer, a 25-year apparel industry veteran, did what many of us only dream of doing and moved to their favorite vacation destination—Costa Rica. They have always had a passion for travel and adventure, and their love of surfing is what originally drew them to vacation in Costa Rica.

COSTA RICA (CON TI N UED)
"We rented a car and traveled around the country and eventually landed on a beach we now call home." Eight years ago they made a “five year” plan that if they were not both 100 percent happy with their lives in Kansas City, they would move to Costa Rica. They had traveled there in 2007 and fell in love with the beauty, the energy, and the excitement of the country. In 2015, they took a leap of faith and moved to Playa Hermosa, Puntarenas where they bought a house, a car, and enrolled their fouryear-old son, Henry, in school. The Wades had traveled internationally for most of their lives, both together and separately. They had been to the beaches of Florida, Mexico, Greece, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Australia, Italy, Hawaii, Turks & Caicos, and Puerto Rico, but they always felt that Costa Rica had a different energy about it. “There is no place more beautiful, peaceful, or more exciting than Costa Rica. It is a paradise for an adventurous spirit.” There is such biodiversity in Costa Rica, not only because it's a land bridge between North and South America, but also because the terrain is so varied, and there are weather patterns moving in from both the Pacific and Atlantic/Caribbean. There are impressive volcanoes, mountain areas, rivers, lakes, and beaches all throughout the country. There are many beautiful beaches - most of the popular ones are on the Pacific side, but the Caribbean has many expansive beaches as well. Lindsey is still very much involved with his Kansas City businesses, and they still own a home in Kansas City, so they are able to travel back often, which has helped with the transition for their son. Moving to Costa Rica hasn't been easy, but it has been worth it. CONTINUED >

My high school sweetheart (now hubby) is a dream! He can create ANYTHING and truly is my right hand man. I’m a proud momma of two fearless boys by day and a DIY daredevil by night. My best work is achieved when my family (and the rest of Kansas!) is fast asleep. To Canvas In A Snap T
his is one of my constant “go to” DIY projects. It’s fast, it’s easy and it looks oh so professional. I love displaying photos, but I
don’t necessarily love a lot of photo frames. These canvases create a crisp, clean look…. All in about 30 minutes! Let’s get started.
Step 1: • First things first, grab your supplies. • Photo on photo paper • 1 ½ inch thick wrapped canvas • Mod Podge in Matte finish • Black spray paint in Satin finish • Clear spray paint in Satin finish • 4 inch or 6 inch foam paint roller • Small paint tray • Place your photo on the clean, dry canvas to make sure it fits correctly. Trim the edges if necessary.
Step 2: Spray paint the canvas sides and a little of the top with the black spray paint. It is VERY important to let this dry completely.
Step 3: Using your foam roller, roll Mod Podge over the entire top of the canvas. Center your photo on top of the wet Mod Podge. Smooth the photo with your hands starting in the middle and pushing out toward the edges
Step 4: Roll a thin even layer of Mod Podge over your photo. This is a little scary “painting” over your photo, but I promise it will dry clear. Once it is covered with a thin layer start at one side and roll straight rows from side to side, in the same direction, as to avoid roller lines once it dries. If you see small bubbles in the wet Mod Podge, it is too thick. Thin it out by taking an almost dry roller over the photo to lift some of the Mod Podge. Repeat until the bubbles are gone. Let this dry completely.
Step 5 • Spray the top and sides of the entire canvas and photo with satin spray paint. • Dry…Hang….High Five. Congratulations on your new Photo Canvas! This same technique can be used on 4x4 tiles of your choice to create custom coasters. You will add a bit of Peel and Stick Cork or felt to the back of the tile so the coaster doesn’t scratch. Cheers! July 2016 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

When parties get divorced, the marital property and debt of the parties have to be divided. In states where equitable division is the law (which is the vast majority of states), this requires that martial property and debt being divided in a just manner when considering all the factors. For example: 1.) What is the business worth? This is a critical question in divorces and hard to value in many cases. Ultimately, the fair market value of the business will probably need to be examined unless the parties can stipulate to a value. But this can be easier said than done. 2.) If both parties take part in the business itself, the parties will have to examine whether the parties can continue operating the business together? Or they may have to look at one of the parties would be better to sell their interest? Veterans Serve ARTICLE ANGELA BROOCKERD, GREGG HALL AND TAMMY RICHARDS
Wilburn “Bud” Meador
May 24, 1965, was graduation day for Bud Meador, and he enlisted in the Marines that very day. He had known virtually his whole life that he wanted to serve his county and do so in the Marines. He hails from a long line of relatives dating back to the American civil War who also served, and Bud said, “My family was very patriotic. It was almost expected by my parents that I would serve our country, and it was something I gladly chose to do. While growing up, my friends and I would often play Cowboys and Indians, but when I would join them, I would always play the part of a Marine.” In his first four years of active service, Bud served twenty-four months in Vietnam. 48
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | July 2016
To be more precise, Bud said, “I spent twenty-four months, twelve days, two hours, and five minutes in Vietnam.” While there, he spent his first twelve months as a Watch Stander in the U.S. diplomatic community where he and his fellow Marines protected classified material, and U.S. lives and property. It was in this portion of his tour of duty that a significant moment in the war’s history occurred: the Viet Cong attack on the U. S. Embassy during the Tet Offensive at 2:50 a.m., January 31, 1968. He points out that the Embassy chancery was never penetrated by the Viet Cong, and 19 of the known 20 attackers were killed in the fight with the remaining Viet Cong survivor taken captive.
Five Americans were lost in that fight, and more than a score wounded. Bud soberly accepts that the U.S. tactical victory was offset by the Viet Cong's strategic success, particularly as it was presented to the American public by the media. Moreover, although the size and scale of the attack was insignificant, its political ramifications were huge. The international headlines around the world incorrectly stated that the United States Embassy in Saigon had been seized. This was an enormous political success for the enemy, and proved to be a major consideration in President Lyndon B. Johnson's decision to leave the presidency at the end of his term. Bud speaks of how his training during boot camp prepared him and his fellow Marines to handle the events of that day. The Marines, seemingly intuitively, knew how to maneuver, how to cover themselves, how to fight and how to defend. In many ways, he knows he is sitting here today enjoying his life as a result of all he learned during those dog days of boot camp. His unit was never more tightly knit than at the end of that experience.
Dr. Michelle Olson
Dr. Olson was deployed to Iraq in May of 2008 to July of 2009 with the 464th Medical Corp. Her unit was in charge of dental clinics scattered across the southern half of Iraq, in which she was designated as the Officer in Charge at Taji Dental Clinic. She completed the remainder of her active duty service in Germany. Throughout her time in the Army, she was privileged to be surrounded by seasoned dentists who were ready and willing to share their knowledge. “All of my experiences in the Army helped me to become a better dentist and gave me an abundance of experiences that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. In addition, I was able to live in Germany and travel all over Europe, which was an experience that I would only have had from being in the Army.” After completing her four years of active duty, Dr. Olson spent her first year in Virginia Beach, and finally settled in Kansas City in 2011.
Jeffery Wagoner
With absolutely no flying experience and a college degree that in no way prepared him in for a military career, Jeff Wagoner drove to Kansas City and applied to be an aviator. At that time, many other people his age were trying to do the same thing. He credits being an Eagle Scout for setting him apart from much of his competition. “Being an Eagle Scout not only looked good on my application, but more importantly, scouting instilled in me a sense of service that is important in serving successfully in the military.” Captain Wagoner got his commission through Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS), Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida and remained there for flight school. “There was no “Maverick” or “Iceman” in the real Naval aviation.” Captain Wagoner remembers, “ My call sign (nickname) was 'Cheese'. You got your call sign for doing something stupid or embarrassing or both.” After 6 years active duty, Captain Wagoner served as a drilling reservist for 17 years. Both provided a variety in missions, including cruising from San Diego around Cape Horn at the tip of South America to Virginia on an aircraft carrier that needed to be overhauled. Flying 43 missions in the Persian Gulf and serving as a lead planner for international security forces during the 2004 Athens Olympics, each offered opportunities to visit many ports of call including Rio de Janeiro and Hong Kong. The military offered life lessons; attention to detail, accepting responsibility for one’s actions and service to others are some that stand out to him. July 2016 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

our own route, and mine has never been a straight path. I was a beginner as well
as an athlete and everything in between. My imperfections and struggles have become my strength and my passion is helping people get started. I hope my tidbits of "expert advice" reach out in to the non-expert community and inspire you all to try something new. I am fortunate enough to find my own health, and I am lucky to work daily amongst the best trainers, instructors and dieticians in Kansas city. My kids, husband family and friends are my life. I make the time to sweat often, work hard and eat well for them. They deserve my best.

If you do nothing else, do this move:
The Push-up. There is no movement better for building overall strength. Don't be intimidated; you don't need to be a Marine. Start with a modified version with your hands on your counter top. Do 10 of each variation, every day. Next week, increase it to 15. Week 3, try it on your knees. It takes less than 10 minutes a day. Recognize your progress as you get stronger and be proud.
The standard push-up:
Photos by Paul Versluis
Targets arms, shoulders, core & chest.
1. Place hands on mat, directly below shoulders. 2. Zip your abs up & pull belly button into your spine. Your abs protect your back. Keeping them up & tight is the MOST important thing. 3. Tilt hips forward creating a diagonal line. Either stay on knees or come up on your toes. 4. Drop your chest towards the ground, in control, then simply push it back up.
The wide
stance push-up: Targets primarily chest and also abs, back & shoulders 1. Use the same form as the standard push-up, but place your hands wider than your shoulders. Your elbows will be slightly flared. 2. Drop your chest to the ground, and use the strength in your chest to push back up. 3. This is a slightly easier than the standard.
The tricep push-up:
Targets primarily triceps (back of your upper arms) also shoulders, back & abs 1. Use the same form as the standard push-ups, but this time you squeeze your elbows into your side. Place your hands just a few inches apart, directly under your chest. 2. Drop your chest as low as possible, keeping your elbows glued into your rib cage. 3. This push-up takes some time to develop the strength. If you cannot take your chest all the way down, even dropping a few inches will work the muscles and build strength. 52

eveloping Potential Inc. believes in respect and placing value on others. They are an innovative company that is working to help others find their niche in life, giving some ,whose gifts and talents might be otherwise overlooked ,opportunities for employment that fits their skill sets and interests. Developing Potential’s Employment Connections program began in 2012.They work to match people with disabilities with employment that corresponds with their interests and gifts. DPI provides Employment specialists who serve as a support to both the potential employer and the individual. They work to help them develop interview and personal communication skills as well as build their own resumes. It has provided for an amazing experience for both the employer and employee. This is a great way for more people to get out of their comfort zones and have more experience in different situations.
Their Mission statement is “To provide quality day habilitation services to adults with developmental disabilities and support those individuals to reach their potential and achieve a dignified, adult lifestyle. DPI is a holistic program that focuses on Body, Mind, and Spirit of the individuals we support seeking to build strengths, foster independence, and be a vehicle for changing lives “ They have been living up to the heart behind the company. There have been several success stories already, with the many local Employers that have been stepping out and linking arms with Developing Potential Inc. One of the stories is Shannon with Salon Ami. She has been working there about a year now and it has been a huge blessing in her life. This was an excellent opportunity not only for Shannon, who loves working in the salon environment, but also for all the staff and clients to be exposed to the abilities of a person having disabilities. This is a great example of how learning to work with others who have disabilities can inspire us all to be more willing to take time and get to know others for what they can do not what they can’t do. Matt began working at Tuesday Morning over a year ago. This was a new environment for him. He needed to find the right team environment where he would be valued and continue to grow in his responsibilities and skills. He found that environment at Tuesday Morning. Since then, he has had many successes working with a great team and growing in his responsibilities. These are just two of the many examples of local employers willing to team up with DPI and place value and respect in the lives of both their employees and themselves. We all know, as we build others up we ourselves are built up too. This is not a cookie cutter approach. It is a person centered approach where the outcomes are as different for every person as their fingerprint. “Developing Potential, Inc. programs embrace the concepts of independence, community inclusion, choice and empowerment. “ The rewards are amazing.

DENTAL IMPLANTS HOW QUICKLY CAN THEY BE DONE? ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
D
ental implants are becoming a more frequent means of tooth replacement. There is some confusion, however, in how quickly they can be done. Some Dental offices advertise implants in one day. How is that possible? Why do some implants take months to complete? Most dental implants are cylindrical. When placed, implants have to be stable before a crown can be placed and chewing forces applied. Rotation of a cylindrical implant is a concern. To avoid rotation of a single dental implant, a 4-6 month time is usually needed for the bone to osseointegrate, or grow to the implant surface. When replacing many teeth at a time, multiple implants are used that can be splinted together in a bridge that will resist rotation. Completion of the implant and bridge can be in one day, and you can eat with the implants the same day. However, for single implants, a longer healing time is needed for more predictable successful treatment outcomes. Dr. Duello is a general dentist in Lee’s Summit since 1991. He graduated from UMKC School of Dentistry in 1991. His wife, Andria, is a counselor in the Lee’s Summit School District, and he has two children, Derek and Delaney.

Thomas S. Samuelson, MD
I became a part of the Kansas City Bone & Joint team in August of 1994 and am board certified in both Orthopaedic Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. Prior to joining the KCBJ team, I completed my residency at the University of Kansas, School of Medicine and my sports medicine fellowship at Louisiana State University. I grew up in Iowa and earned my undergraduate degree at Iowa State University and my medical degree at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. My primary interest is sports medicine with a special interest in knees and shoulders. Over the years I have been affiliated with the athletic programs for Baker University, University of Missouri Kansas City, Rockhurst University, the Kansas City Comets and The Kansas City Attack soccer teams. Currently, I am the team physician for Rockhurst High School. I like to stay current with up to date advancements in sports medicine and am a member of AOSSM (American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine) and AANA (Arthroscopy Association of North America). I have always enjoyed fixing things which makes my career in orthopaedics so enjoyable. It is very satisfying to help an injured athlete or employee return to their normal active lifestyle. Giving back is important to me and I have recently participated in Operation Walk USA to assist those in need. I also enjoy participating in volunteer and mission work with my church. Outside of the office and operating room, I enjoy spending time with my family and participating in all types of outdoor recreational activities.
