Lifestyle Letter

Letter from the Creative Director C

raft beer has deep roots that go back centuries in time, and its increasing popularity is being called a 'beer revolution' by many. Recipes are created and refined by master brewers until they are perfect, and consumers are preferring a wide variety of flavorful, quality ingredients. There are so many variations of grains, hops, malt and process that it literally has infinite possibilities, and brew masters are able to devote attention and creativity to produce artisan quality beer.

Local breweries combine tradition with fun new twists that entertain our palates. Their unique, local talents are further amplified through witty names and beautiful custom artwork. There are more styles and options available, and the innovation by craft brewers have exploded with choices such as wild and sour beers, chocolate stouts, seasonal flavors, coffee IPA’s, and the list goes on. Kansas City has no shortage of craft breweries, and the charm and creative style of each brew master gives us an array of local choices. When you pick-up a glass pulled from your local brewery, you are literally drinking art that is founded on tradition and time. We picked a few local breweries to highlight this month for our craft beer issue, but there are several other great ones here in KC worth visiting as well, so go out and try something new! Cheers,

The subject matter in her work ranges in parallel our society. The contrast of reality vs. both abstract environments with large brush strokes and an array of illusion speaks to the colors, as well as realistic natural pieces of our lives we imagery, such as butterflies, bees understand as true and and dragonflies. This combination the reality we live by.” of elements has over time developed into a conversation about authenticity. She is concerned with the level of awareness we live our lives within and how it affects our understanding of the different elements in our lives we come in contact with everyday; from the food we eat, relationships we hold, and images we see. Katie describes, “What began as a design principle and a love of nature, has developed into a relationship between two polarizing parts that parallel our society. The contrast of reality vs. illusion speaks to the pieces of our lives we understand as true and the reality we live by.” She believes that just as her paintings include images of reality and illusion, such relationships can also be found on a variety of levels in our societies. Much of her concern developed after the birth of her first child in 2011 and has only intensified as she and her husband Zach welcomed their second and third. What may be CONTINUED >

perceived simply as a pretty painting has much deeper roots as this mom-artist is influenced by a strong sense of responsibility and maternal protection that filters directly into her work. After teaching art at Lee’s Summit North High School for eight years, Katie decided to take some time off to be home with her three young children. The added benefit is she also has more time to pursue her first passion; painting. “Growing up, all I ever wanted to be was a mom and an artist. I feel very lucky that I can give more of my focus to both.” says Katie. Even with a renewed focus, teaching will always be close to Katie and she will miss the meaningful relationships she developed with students. “I felt strongly about pushing my students to reach for their highest potential and encouraging them to follow their dreams. I truly believe with enough conviction, anyone can do anything they want in life. We had many conversations about life, living truthfully and authentically.” This is a theme that continues in her artwork, as Katie hopes to encourage her viewers to pursue a heightened awareness in their daily interactions that can lead them to a more full and connected life. Katie and Zach along with their three children live at Lake Lotawana. Katie was recently chosen as a fellow for ArtistINC in Kansas City, Mo and looks forward to starting the school year CONTINUED > 18

or Brian Bixby, co-owner of Grains and Taps in downtown Lee’s Summit, the rising popularity of craft beer is embodied by his brewing supply store’s expansion. Bixby, moved from Nashville to open the craft beer and homebrew supply store with his business partner, Brad Boehm in January 2013. Boehme, a member of the well-established Lee’s Summit ‘ZZ Hops’ homebrew club, had been driving 35 minutes to Kansas to get his homebrew supplies, and saw a market opportunity in Lee’s Summit. The business partner’s hunch about local demand was spot-on. They opened their downtown Lee’s Summit store on Douglas Street in June 2013. Their first year in business, they co-sponsored the Blarney Brew-Off with the Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street Association and sold 100 tickets. The next year, they sold 200 tickets.

In 2016, ticket sales doubled again as Bixby and Boehme prepared to move to a larger, more visible location on Third Street in July 2016. “The response has been amazing. We’ve grown so fast it’s been hard to keep up with it,” Bixby says. “There’s just been this explosion in the craft beer scene and that seems to correlate with home-brewing as well.” The new location’s bar area incorporates the aesthetics of home brewing within its design and offers 24 craft beers on tap. Home brewers will find all the brewing supplies they need – from beer and wine equipment starter kits to bottling and flavoring. Grains and Taps employees, all homebrewers themselves, spend time with new brewers who come in the shop to purchase a kit and craft their first beer. Staff also sometimes assist customers in trouble-shooting on their brew day. While home brewing appeals to many different types of people, a common character trait is a spirit of independence. These are people who enjoy a DIY project and can walk step-by-step through the kit’s instructions to craft an excellent beer, Bixby says. CONTINUED >

“On one hand you have the science of it, because fermentation is a metabolic process of yeast,” Bixby explains. “But there’s also the culinary art of it. There’s the type of people who put on their chef’s hat and enjoy formulating recipes.”

Join the Club ZZ Hops, a Lee’s Summit-based home brew club founded in 1996, meets 7-10 p.m. the third Monday of each month at Grains and Taps. Guests and homebrewers of all skill levels are welcome to join in the sharing of

For customers seeking more hands-on help, Grains and Taps also offers classes, rotating monthly instruction for beginners, intermediate and advanced brewers. During class, staff demonstrate the brewing process up to the point of adding the yeast to the mixture, so that they do not actually produce alcohol, in accordance with Missouri law. “When you get the process down, it’s fairly easy to do,” Bixby says. “It’s still work and it takes time, but that’s another facet of the pride that comes from it. Good things take time.”

“By entering competitions, you get honest feedback and you can start to perfect what you’re doing,” Crane says. “If you ask a friend, to them it’s free beer, they’re going to like it. Real experienced judges look at an amber bottle with a number on it and can provide critique and suggestions to remedy it.” The Leawood resident was not a beer-drinker himself, but he fell in love with the process and became a self-described ‘mad-scientist homebrewer.’ Crane’s weekends were consumed with the craft, and he began hoarding fermentation barrels in his basement in anticipation of barrel-aging certain styles of beer. Within a few years his wild fermented beers, sour beers and saisons were winning medal-after-medal in local and national competitions. “By entering competitions, you get honest feedback and you can start to perfect what you’re doing,” Crane says. “If you ask a friend, to them it’s free beer, they’re going to like it. Real experienced judges look at an amber bottle with a number on it and can provide critique and suggestions to remedy it.” Crane joined Kansas City Bier Meisters in 2011, continuing to experiment with flavors and styles. He entered competitions with beers made from traditional ingredients as well as with interesting ingredients like fresh beets. Still, brewing was mainly a hobby for the entrepreneur, whose Raytown-based business Funblock Tables had been making children’s Lego tables, classroom storage furniture and closet organizational systems for 22 years. But early 2013 marked an end for one business and the beginning of another. One of Funblocks’s major clients outsourced to China, and Crane began to contemplate opening a brewery with friend and professional brewer Randy Strange. Around the same time, Chris Meyers, a Lee’s Summit homebrewer, read an article about Crane in the Kansas City Star and looked him up in the White Pages, interested in purchasing his beer recipes for a Lee’s Summit startup brewery. Instead of completing a business transaction and going their separate ways, the men hit it off and began brewing together, meeting around Crane’s kitchen table every Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

30

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | September 2016

“Michael had a business that was about to go away at the same time we needed a space, and he was a homebrewer,” Meyers says. “It just made sense that we do it together.” Crane, Strange and Meyers joined forces and added expertise to their team, brewing 30-gallon batches in Crane’s basement. They spent 2014 and 2015 sharing their beer at festivals and charity events to get their name out. They signed on with Central States Distributing, the largest distributor in the Kansas-City area, before they were even producing beer commercially. Crane’s empty white cinder block furniture factory just off the railroad tracks in Raytown was renovated to house brewery operations, and the team began brewing there in September 2015. By the time their first beers entered Missouri and Kansas markets in January 2016, Crane Brewing already had 5,000 Facebook and 2,000 Twitter followers. “When we hit the market it wasn’t like we were coming out of nowhere with this new brand,” Meyers says. “People had heard of us.”

Now Crane beers can be found bottled and on tap all over the Kansas-City metro area, St. Louis, Springfield and distribution is expanding to the rest of Kansas and Nebraska. Meyers said one of the keys to their early success is that they brew similar products as what many do nationally, but they brew them year-round in Kansas City with a lot more variety. In addition, the fruit flavor that goes into their beers is all real fruit rather than extracts or flavorings. “It’s more effort but just a better product,” Meyers said. “We make the kind of beers we like to drink.” Box header title ideas: Taps to Try; Taps to Taste; Tap Tasting Farmhouse IPA – An American farmhouse ale brewed with the IPA-lover in mind Orange Gose – A refreshingly clean, tart gose with a real citrus orange finish Tea Weiss – A tart, dry Berliner Weiss brewed with Hugo Tea Company berry rooibos tea September 2016 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

Traditionally, Belgian monks use candi sugar to sweeten their abbey ales, but the local honey used by Kansas City’s Torn Label Brewing Co produces a unique tea and honey quality here. Monk & Honey is a delectable blend of old world brewing traditions and new school ingenuity. Available only on draft at the moment but keep your eye open for cans in the future.

FILM - MAKER SHOWCASES KC (CON TI N U ED)

I

n their first feature film, Trust Fund, co-producers and husband and wife team, Sandra Martin and Isaac Alongi, felt passionate about filming most of the movie right here in KC. Sandra, a Lee’s Summit native, and Isaac, who grew up in Prairie Village, both believed that KC was perfect for showcasing their first film. In the movie, Kansas City successfully doubles as Chicago and Italy, and, although some areal shots were filmed in Italy, the majority of the movie was filmed in various locations right here. Trust Fund was such a success that it was picked up by AMC Independent and premiered in Kansas City, with a successful run, which they credit to the support of the city. This visually stunning film led by an incredible cast, takes you on a visionary experience. It explores issues of betrayal, feeling alone, and left with the choice of surrendering your identity to please someone else, or break free to discover who you were truly meant to be. The couple has been working together for over 15 years, and each have talents that compliment each other. Isaac was the director of photography, while Sandra wrote and directed the film, and they both shared the duties of producing. “It’s not often a husband and wife work so closely together as director and cinematographer, but it worked out really well for us, because we were already on the same page. There were times when things got stressful and intense, so it was nice to be there for each other,” says Alongi. CONTINUED >

FILM - MAKER SHOWCASES KC (CON TI N U ED)

They are working on their next film, HOW TO PICK YOUR SECOND HUSBAND FIRST. “It’s a romantic comedy that pokes fun about delicate issues every one faces in marriage and no one wants to talk about. The film shows how difficult marriage can be at times, and how we live in a culture of giving up and starting over, which is not always the best answer. Faced with the possibility that the problem, that you assume is the other person, just might follow you to the next relationship,” said Sandra. Filmmaking is a relatively new endeavor for the couple, but they feel very passionate about what they are doing, and they love working together. "It’s like a hobby to us,” Martin adds, “because we love it!" “We want to make films that are entertaining, that you can take your whole family to, and not worry that they’ll be awkward moments where you regret bringing the kids to. We want to create movies that give plenty of opportunity 44

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | September 2016

for discussion later, that raise questions and don’t give all the answers. Films that are based on subject matters that are common, but not always talked about,” Sandra says. Today more than ever, our world has become reachable, and movies are such an important medium to do that. Movies are invitations to live with people whose lives you may never even have imagined, to be faced with their choices and enter into unimagined worlds. Films help shape the culture in which we live, and they see it as a huge responsibility and great opportunity. “Our core beliefs are seen in the stories that we choose to tell, and everything that we do. Knowing that we have the opportunity to influence a generation is exciting. We want to show an audience how hope, love, and our faith in God makes a difference,” Sandra said. GERALD R. MCNAMARA, MD I became a part of Kansas City Bone & Joint Clinic in June of 1996 but have been in practice since 1983. I earned my undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Arizona, Tucson and completed my orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Kansas, School of Medicine. I am Board Certified in orthopaedic surgery. For 14 years, I have been the team physician for local professional indoor soccer teams, The Comets and The KC Attack. Giving back is important to me and I have participated with Tarhawks Charity Surgery for many years participating in multiple medical missions to Nicaragua. In March of 2010, I was awarded the Menorah Medical Center First Humanitarian Award. For the past 4 years I have participated in Operation Walk USA providing knee replacements with other nursing and hospital volunteers. Outside of the clinic and surgery, I enjoy listening to music and playing guitar with a garage band, spending time with my family and KU basketball. I enjoy the challenges and rewards of my job as an orthopaedic surgeon. It has given me the opportunity to improve patients’ quality of life both surgically and nonsurgically. It is rewarding to be instrumental in that.

Wooden

Wine Crate W

BY ANGI HOCKETT

hen the party's over, what do you do with all the empty wooden wine crates? Well this fun project will solve your

problem. A trendy coffee table is one such piece of furniture that can transform the look, feel and style of a whole room. Let's face it, building a coffee table may not be at the top of your TO DO list, but once you read this easy "How To", you may be inspired to finish off that last bottle of wine in the crate! Let's get started...

Supplies needed 3/4 Inch Plywood cut to the size of your crates once assembled 4 Wooden Crates, mine are from Michaels, but recycle if you can 4 Caster Wheels, size is your choice 1 Inch Wood Screws and Washers Screwdriver Stain or Paint of your choice Paint Brush Optional Satin Polyurethane Optional Glass Top

52

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | September 2016

Coffee Table FUN PROJECT + WOODEN WINE CRATES = COFFEE TABLE WITH STORAGE AND

STEP 1 Screw a caster in each corner of the plywood

STEP 2 Stain or paint the crates and plywood, and let them dry.

STEP 3 Arrange the crates into a square by laying them on the long side with the top of the crate facing out. Screw the crates to each other on the inside slats. Once complete, all 4 crates should be one solid unit.

STEP 4 Turn the crate unit upside down. Align the plywood upside down on the crates. Screw the plywood and crate together along the edges. Flip the entire piece over and voila! There are also two additional options you may choose. If you want a sheen to your stain, you can add a satin polyurethane. My favorite is the Wipe On Polyurethane by Minwax. You may also choose to have a piece of glass cut for the top to add stability. If you do not add the glass top, there will be a hollow square in the center with the plywood as the base. This can be decorated to your personal style such as decorative pebbles or a plant. It would also be a great place to stash the TV remotes! There are several versions of this DIY project online. Thank you to my friends at Removeandreplace.com for making it simple.

Parenting time versus custody Stange Law Firm, PC

Some states are dropping the term “custody” in favor of “parenting time.” One view on this is that the term “custody” can have negative implications. In other words, if at the conclusion of a divorce or child custody matter, one party is giving “sole” or “joint” custody, the thought is that these labels can be counterproductive. For example, a parent who is on the short end of a “sole” physical and/ or legal custody award might be put off by this designation. As a result, the thought is that many parents might end up litigating their divorce or child custody matter to get a more beneficial child custody labels. For this reason, some states, are dropping the label of “custody” altogether in favor of the term “parenting time.” The term “visitation” is also found taboo in some places as well. In the eyes of some, these terms (“custody” and “visitation)” can seem harsh and judgmental in terms of addressing chil-

dren and parenting. Instead, the thought is that family courts should simply allocate parenting time and decision-making between the parents. In states that adopt this approach, the courts are generally able to assign parental responsibilities as well. This means that the family court may assign specific responsibilities to the parents in terms of health care, education, extracurricular activities or other matters. Instead of having scenarios where one party has sole custody and is able to make all final decisions, or joint custody where both parties have to agree, the court could theoretically piecemeal the decision-making out. This means that one parent could be in charge of making health care decisions. The other parent might be in charge of making educational decisions, etc. Instead of one parent having sole physical custody, the parties would then be awarded parenting time. Illinois is a state that adopted legislation that fits this format regarding parenting time and allocation of parental re-

sponsibilities. This is in contrast to Missouri where designations of sole and joint physical custody still exist. The question that is out there is which method is prefeble? In many ways, the verdict is still out, but this is still a trend on the rise nonetheless. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | September 2016

Q&A WITH FCKC & USWNT ALL-STAR, AMY RODRIGUEZ.

Fall is one of my favorite seasons in Kansas City...the crisp air & colorful trees provide a beautiful backdrop for hours, upon hours of... youth sports. True story, fall is crazy busy for this (sorta) soccer mom and I struggle to find the time the time to make my own workouts a priority. This year, I called in a professional for some extra motivation & tips. Amy Rodriguez not only plays forward for our FCKC women’s professional soccer club, but has also played in over 100 games for the U.S. National Team AND she has played in 2 previous Olympic games! Amy scored the winning goals in both the 2014 & 2015 NWSL Championship games for FCKC. Most impressively, Amy just gave birth to her 2nd baby in the past 3 years. How does Amy Rodriguez juggle it all and what time-saving tips does she have for the rest of us? Check it out: HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR POST BABY COME-BACK?

“With my pregnancies, I stopped playing contact soccer around 3-4 months pregnant. I was able to still do some light weightlifting and Pilates 2 times a week, as well as walking everyday to get cardio. It was important for me to stay toned and stay fit as best I could throughout pregnancy so I could have a quick and healthy recovery after delivery. With my first baby, I waited, because the doctor required 6 weeks postpartum before resuming intense training.” WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU DURING THE SEASON?

“Wake up, breakfast is usually eggs and oatmeal. Morning training session usually last about 2 hours. I drink a protein shake or recovery drink post practice, and I like protein rich meals that help me get through a tough workout. Rest and recovery to prepare for a game or the next day of training is important. If I snack throughout the day it's usually Greek yogurt, PB and banana, or a protein bar.” DO YOU GET A WORKOUT PROGRAMS FROM FCKC & USWNT? WHAT TYPES OF WORKOUTS DO THESE INCLUDE?

“My training regimen, when I'm not pregnant, is pretty intense. I usually only take off one day a week. Otherwise it's soccer training on the field or strength and agility training in the gym, everyday. The USWNT has a detailed and personalized workout for each player. My fitness coach sends them to me via email when I'm not in training camp and we are required to log our heart rate and wear GPS trackers to ensure we are completing our workouts and hitting the right heart rate zones.” ANY TIPS ON HOW TO STILL LOOK GOOD WHILE SWEATING?

“I actually have permanent eyeliner which saves me a ton of time. I can sweat, go swimming, or wake up first thing in the morning and look more refreshed. I'm very busy and I'm also super low maintenance, so any time savers are really appreciated! I've definitely mastered the hair bun for those days that I don't want to do my hair.” CONTINUED >

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SHOE?

“I joke that you'll always find me in my Nike running shoes, because with 2 busy boys I'm always on the move. If I'm not pushing them around in a stroller, I'm chasing after my 2 year old or running up the stairs to get something. I wear Nike Free running shoes, because they're super comfy and I can wear them all day.” OTHER TIPS FROM AMY RODRIGUEZ:

”I always have my water bottle on me at all times. I also keep 2 water jugs full in the house-one upstairs and one downstairs. With being an athlete you need lots of water, and being a breastfeeding athlete only increases your need for water.” ”Organize and prioritize. I love scheduling, because it eases my stress and I don't feel overwhelmed with the endless tasks and responsibilities that I have as a mom, wife, and athlete. I use a calendar and write up to-do lists and to-buy lists on my phone.” ”Get help either from family or a babysitter so you can get some you-time at the gym. Having a good support system is crucial. I wouldn't have been able to make it back onto the soccer field without it.” NO SHOWER? NO PROBLEM. These prod-

ucts are a gym-bag-must-have to freshen up post workout: Dry Shampoo is key for refreshing & lifting sweaty, oily hair. Try Rockaholic Dirty Secret by TIGI Bumble and Bumble Tonic Lotion for hair is great for restyling without washing. Pacifica Underarm Deodorant Wipes take away the sticky, sweaty post gym odor & feel. Complexion Rescue tinted moisturizer from bareMinerals is light and easy to apply after splashing some cold water on your glowing post-workout skin. Mer-Sea misting body oils make you glimmer and takes away the post gym smell. “Like” the Lifestyle Publications Facebook page for a link to my current “12 weeks to 2017”. Setting rules—and sticking to them— can help prevent underage drinking. Our high-schoolers have a lot of milestones ahead of them: prom, graduation and college. At times, it may be tempting to relax the rules and let them celebrate with alcohol. But according to experts, that’s a big mistake. We’ve spent a lot of time teaching them to respect the rules, and if we start to make exceptions, we may send the signal that underage drinking is a “grey area.” More than ever, this is the time to maintain consistency; special events don’t call for special rules. The 4% Withdrawal Rule: An Outdated Retirement Strategy?

M

any retirees wonder how much they can withdraw from their retirement portfolios each year, while still having a strong asset base. A common guideline has been 4%, known as the “4% Withdrawal Rule.” In recent years, this strategy has sparked major discussions among academics and professionals as to whether or not it’s still a viable guide for today’s retirees. Before we can answer the question, we first need to understand what the strategy actually means. The 4% Withdrawal Rule began over 20 years ago. It’s a suggested formula for withdrawing money from your investments while still making it last through retirement, approximately 30 years. Using this method, let’s say that you retire with $1 million of assets. In each year of retirement, the rule said you could withdraw $40,000, which is 4% of $1 million. While it may seem like a 4% withdrawal rate is a good “rule” of thumb, what it fails to take into account is stock market volatility and inflation – both of which have become familiar in recent years and may impact your retirement strategy. Life expectancy has increased now too, so your money may need to last even longer than 30 years. Overall, each person’s strategy is different and there is not a “one size fits all” when it comes to your retirement income. Wade Pfau Ph.D., a retirement expert renowned in the finance industry for his research on the matter, currently states that “in a lower interest rate world, a 3% withdrawal rate reflects something closer to a chance of success than a 4% withdrawal rate historically provided….”* Although growth of your assets during your earning years is important, the payout during your retirement years is critical. Being aware of your financial options will help ensure that your money can provide the lifestyle you desire for as long as you live.** One of those financial options is a product that is designed to guarantee principal protection,

offer potential returns and deliver retirement income…possibly for life: a Fixed Index Annuity, or FIA.** With FIAs, when the related market index has grown during your crediting period, you participate in a portion of those gains. If the index experiences a low, your locked-in earnings are not affected, thus providing protection for both your principal and credited interest. In the end, it’s important to find a balance between your lifestyle and having enough financial resources if the unexpected occurs. Consult with a financial professional and a tax advisor to ensure you are knowledgeable of the options available, as well as potential benefits and penalties. It is possible to achieve your financial retirement goals, it just takes a little work to get there. In just two weeks, Tesla registered more than 300,000 pre-orders—a level of interest that is truly unprecedented for a car that nobody has driven yet and barely seen.

ARTICLE DONALD HAWKINS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF TESLA MOTORS

I

n 2006, Elon Musk published a blog post outlining his long-term vision for Tesla. At the time, Tesla was still two years away from delivering the first Roadster, the company’s first product. The strategy of Tesla is to enter at the high end of the market, where customers are prepared to pay a premium,” Musk said. “Then, we’ll drive down market as fast as possible to higher unit volume and lower prices with each successive model. (pullquote) The base-level Tesla Model 3 will come standard with a rear-mounted single motor capable of launching the car from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in about six seconds. A high-performance dual-motor AWD configuration will also be offered, though Tesla has offered little in the way of performance stats for the car. Journalists who were offered the opportunity to ride in the car reported a high-performance feel that would be familiar to anyone who has been in a Tesla. Tesla announced the driving range in the Model 3 to be “at least 215 miles.” Achieving a 215-mile range will require a pack, most likely, of about 50 kilowatt-hours. Some analysts believe that Tesla is already approaching a cost of $200 per kWh, which would put the Model 3’s pack at around $10,000. Tesla’s long-term goal is to use mass production at its Nevadabased factory to bring the cost well below this level. A 240-volt Tesla home charging station costs $750, not including installation. We expect the Model 3 to use an on-board 10 kW charger, like its sibling vehicles. This means owners can add 30 or more miles of range for every hour of charging at home. With its sizable battery pack providing more than 200 miles of driving range—and the average commuter traveling about 40 miles per day—most drivers will find they have plenty of energy reserves on a daily basis. In terms of longer distance highway trips, Tesla offers its current vehicle owners free access to around 400 Supercharger sites in the United States. These high-speed fast-chargers are capable of bringing a Model S battery pack to 80 percent of capacity in about 40 minutes. This opens up new possibilities for interstate travel for many EV drivers. The Model 3 is slated to begin production in late 2017, but chances are you’ll be in for a much longer wait if you didn’t put down a $1,000 refundable deposit in the first hour after Tesla began accepting pre-orders. In just two weeks, Tesla registered more than 300,000 pre-orders—a level of interest that is truly unprecedented for a car that nobody has driven yet and barely seen. Elon Musk’s stated goal is 500,000 deliveries by 2020, though many analysts doubt this projection in light of how long it has taken to for Tesla to reach peak production capacity in the past—as well as the company’s dependency on reaching full production at its battery factory. Parting Thoughts

Three Tips to re-direct your video game obsessed kid WORDS KELLYE CROCKETT

M

y 10 year old son loves Minecraft. NO, really I mean he LOVES this video game. Playing, watching videos of other people playing, getting on servers and playing with other people. If you are not yet aware of Minecraft here’s the general gist: Players “mine” for items that you use to “craft’ other items in a virtual world made entirely of one cubic meter sized blocks. You can build anything, and people do -- the Eiffel Tower? Mars? Horse land? Been there, done that. My son’s love for this game verges on obsession. Or perhaps addiction? Or a passion for learning? The line is so very thin. Rather than send him to video game rehab, I decided to look for ways to redirect his activity so we can call it a passion, not an addiction. Here are three tips and two cautions I found that might help direct your kiddo’s obsession back into the realm of a healthy passion for learning. • Make it interactive --I bought him headphones with a microphone, set up his own YouTube Channel (with my account info for safety, of course!) and let him make his own gamer videos. The next thing I knew we were talking strategies to increase his viewership--optimal video length, marketing, nonlinear video editing, gifs, Flash, video recording software, online advertising. Way more interested dinner conversation than how you “crafted diamond armour”. • Sneak in some learning -- I started suggesting Minecraft dioramas he could build. “So

74

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | September 2016

is it possible to build a scene from that Percy Jackson book you read?” “Can you recreate the one scene from that Avengers movie?” Slowly the conversation morphed from movies and books into historical themes. “What did Missouri look like when the pioneers were crossing the prairie?” I don’t think he would do this all the time, but we enjoyed seeing how his learning and playing intersected. Teachers have a bazillion ideas for using Minecraft for education. Check out: http://services.minecraftedu. com/wiki/Examples_by_Subject • Transferable skills -- Entry level Minecrafters craft, mid-level Minecrafters code the game into a completely new experience. Coding is still one of the hottest skills out there, and luckily we have Kansas City Coder Dojo, free kids coding classes in the Google Fiber Space on Saturday’s from 9:00 a.m.-noon. A complete schedule can be found here: coderdojokc.com/. A word of caution about servers and YouTube channels -- When your child is playing on a server, connects through XBox, or posts a video on YouTube they may interact with people you do not know. No matter how old your child is, ALWAYS monitor these accounts. Online predators are real. Different Minecraft servers have different rules for communication. Pick the

right ones for your family. I knew I had been too lax when my son mentioned that two people on a server “broke up in Minecraft.” When my son posts a video to his YouTube channel, he goes by a pseudonym, never shows his face and never talks about anything that could identity his hometown, neighborhood or school. Safety first my friends!
