Letter from the Creative Director
I
have had the privilege of having so many inspirational women in my life as role models, mentors and friends- women who build each other up and strengthen each other. As I reflect on the many amazing women who have touched my life and impacted me in so many ways over the years, I see the beautiful faces of so many friends, family, coworkers, sisters and neighbors. However, the one who stands out as the one who has shaped so much of who I am and what I strive to be like is my mother.
My mom has such a magnetic, dynamic personality that it is hard to even put into words all that she encompasses. She is a fireball of energy and is ready and willing to help anyone at anytime. Growing up, she could make us laugh so hard our sides hurt in one instance, embarrass us with things like random pop-ins to fix our hair at school, and turn around and inspire us with her tenacity and passionate spirit. She raised ten kids, and upon my youngest brother going to kindergarten, she went back to school to earn her nursing degree and has been a hospice nurse ever since. She has taught me the lesson of compassion and selflessness as I watched by her example take in extra children in need to live with us from time to time, sometimes allowing them to live with us for years. She opened her home for gettogethers with Sudan refugees, inner-city kids and really to anyone that we brought to her attention of needing a little help. On many occasions, lonely neighbors or a spouse of a past hospice patient would join our family for holidays because my mother wanted them to have a place to feel welcome.

This month is our women’s issue. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about some of the inspirational women right here in our community, each one making an impact in their own way. Their stories definitely inspired me to do more. I hope you enjoy reading about them as much as I did and that you feel inspired too.

My mom has taught me the lesson of being giving and to give without hesitation. Not only does she give when it has been easy to give, but I watched her give when times were tight for us growing up, which was such a valuable lesson. She always found a way to serve and to give of herself and encouraged all of us to do the same and most importantly to put our faith above all else. I am beyond blessed to call her my mother and to have her as such a role model in life.

with questions on customer service, the Gravatts did the unthinkable in January 2017. They bought a trash truck and started a new business. "A lot of complaints were being made about the trash haulers in town,” Jarrod, who works at Baker Distributing and is active in many areas of Lee’s Summit, says. “Every week, there were more and more complaints during public comments and I would hear it on all media outlets. I saw a huge opportunity and a need for a quality, customer service-oriented, local trash hauler in Lee’s Summit.” The Gravatts are both 2002 graduates of Lee’s Summit North and chose Lee’s Summit to raise their two children, Jordan and Kori. “From the bottom of my heart, I’m just trying to do what is best for my community,” Jarrod says. “I want to create jobs and give back to the community through charities, city events, youth sports and do my part to be a positive role model by promoting healthy lifestyles, recycling habits and keeping the streets safe and clean. You know that incredible feeling when you are completely put together, hair and makeup? Throw your hair in a messy topknot and you can have that feeling every day with my five-step makeup regime! And, if you’ve never learned how to do your makeup properly, these tips are for you!
STEP 1: FACE TOOLS: FOUNDATION BRUSH, LARGE POWDER BRUSH FOUNDATION: Apply primer to entire face (optional), then apply
foundation, starting from the center of your face, blending outward on cheeks, eyelids and under eyes. You can even use your hands to apply. CONCEALER: Apply concealer only to blemishes or areas needing
coverage. Having applied foundation first, you’ll need less concealer for a flawless finish. Use a small brush or your ring finger to apply.
STEP 2: EYES
Powder: Blend any creases first, then lightly dust powder over
TOOLS: DUAL-ENDED SHADOW BRUSH
face to set your foundation and concealer. EYESHADOW: Choose a light, medium and dark shade. Start with
the lightest shade and apply from inner to outer corner of the eye. Next, blend the medium shade from the outer corner inward—think of a sideways “v” shape. Finally, using a small liner brush, apply the darkest shade as your liner as close to the lash line as possible. I love the look of powder liner—it’s more soft and blendable than a liquid liner.
EYEBROWS: With an angled brow brush, start at the top of the brow,
creating the overall shape. Then, blend color throughout, filling in sparse brows. Choose a powder shadow that has no red, unless you are a redhead! These colors help your brows look naturally full, not fake. MASCARA: One thick coat

STEP 3: BLUSH TOOLS: LARGE BRUSH OR ANGLED BRUSH BLUSH: Smile and apply blush to the apples of your cheeks. Think
of applying along an imaginary line from the bottom of your nose to the top of your ear.
STEP 4: LIPS TOOLS: (OPTIONAL) LIP BRUSH AND TISSUE TO BLOT LIP GLOSS: You can’t mess this up. Pick your favorite gloss,
lipstick or stain and apply! For lasting power, blot with a tissue or blotting paper and re-apply a few times.
STEP 5: HIGHLIGHTER TOOLS: FINGERTIPS OR A LARGE BRUSH HIGHLIGHTER: This is a makeup artist’s secret to a healthy
glow. Put a small amount of highlighter on your fingers or drag a large brush through a light, shimmery eyeshadow or blush. Apply on brow bone and top of cheekbones for a supermodel finish. Think of applying highlighter in a “c” shape around the eyes and on top of the cheekbones.

A warning shot that a divorce is coming: Money is being moved Stange Law Firm, PC
Unfortunately, for some individuals, a marriage might be on shaky ground. During times like this, individuals could be talking about the possibility of divorce. There could be disagreements and strife in the marriage itself. In a lot of marriages, there might be arguments and differences of opinion. There could be hard times but the individuals might not actually intend on getting a divorce. In many marriages, this is very much the case. Some individuals might have a hard time deciphering whether or not they are just in difficult times in their marriage or whether a divorce is actually about to take place. Some truly may not feel as if they know the intentions of their spouse. Every situation is different, therefore, uniform rules can not always be applied. But one fact that might very well lead a party to know the intentions of their spouse is the moving of large sums of money from a bank or investment account.
The laws of every state vary. For this reason, a party should consult with an attorney who is licensed and competent to practice law in their jurisdiction. Generally, parties are not to move marital funds while a divorce is pending or reasonably anticipated. But in some circumstances, a party might move money anyway. They might move it from a joint bank account, or investment account, into an account in their name. Some individuals might not move all the money, but maybe just a portion of the money without any advanced notice or conversation. While this might not be a sign of a looming divorce in every circumstance, this can certainly be a big warning sign in many cases that a divorce is about to come. After all, why would a party be moving significant sums of money (without any discussions or agreement about this) otherwise? In some marriages, the couple might agree to maintain separate bank accounts. This is normal in many marriages because some parties might have
different spending and saving habits. But when significant sums of money are being moved without any prior notice or conversation, a party should certainly be concerned. In many of these cases, it might be time for a party to begin considering their options quickly if this has happened to ensure that marital money is not transferred, concealed, dissipated or encumbered without their assent — and without their ability to bring it back into the marital estate. The reality is that the movement of money is often a significant sign that a divorce is about to be filed, and to prepare appropriately if so. For Julie Chamberlin and Jenise Miller, their story encompasses this but is also one wrapped in faith, hope and sacrifice. It is a story worthy of praise and a tale of motherhood that truly defines love without limits.

“It was at that time that I asked God to take my pen and write my story,” she says. And in true miraculous fashion, God was ready to write a masterpiece. Miller’s testament reveals a different reality. Growing up in Kansas City, Miller watched her own mother, who was 14 when Miller was born, work tirelessly to provide for her family. a future that would relieve her family of life’s pressures that made upward mobility a struggle. But then, during a time when Miller felt adrift, she discovered she was pregnant, and her childhood came to an abrupt end. On March 1, 2011, 16-year old Miller gave birth to Troy. She recalls having Troy was the most treasured part of her life. Still, there were nights they cried together, unsure what the future would hold. The judgment she faced only added to what

A MOTHER’S LOVE (CON TI N U ED)
Chamberlin was an adoption caseworker at The Lighthouse, an agency specializing in adoption and assisting women in parenting. Although she worked with infant adoption on a regular basis, personally, she had always had a heart for older children in the foster care system and most of her life believed that one day she would open her home to an older child. Miller had never considered adoption while pregnant but understood that in order to give Troy what she wanted him to have most, happiness, she would have to allow a loving family to embrace him. On July 10, Chamberlin received an e-mail from her mother that she had been praying for her and that she felt God tell her that her daughter would be a mother and would be a mother very soon. This confused her because she was going through a miscarriage that week. Two hours later, Chamberlin received a call from a private adoption lawyer that told her about a 16-month old boy named Troy and his mother who were seeking an open adoption. Although Chamberlin had been approached about other children on several occasions before, this felt very different. She felt a stirring in her heart to meet them. July 13 marked their first visit and by July 22, Troy was placed in the Chamberlins' arms. Through tears, Miller knew they had all found the perfect match. It felt like destiny and God’s plan for Troy’s life was beginning to unfold. Those closest to the Chamberlins describe the immediate and complete joy that Troy brought to the family. “I don’t think I will ever forget the beaming smiles on their faces that they wore constantly for months. After watching them go through so much heartache, the pure joy and gift of Troy to this family was so evident,” Julie’s mother says. Photo by Paul Versluis

Lotawana and Woodland Shores on Prairie Lake to name a few. Each lake community provides a select set of amenities which include a variety of lake-permitted activities, swimming pools, clubhouses, golf and even equestrian options. The Renee Amey Team is expert in matching the desires and needs of the lake community buyer with the community that meets their specific needs. The recap below is a useful tool in comparing the different options and summarizing the amenities of each lake. "We are ready with answers for potential buyers on the specific details for each lake spanning from questions on water depth, boat size, dock options, lot sizes, amenities, availability of clubhouses, community centers, swimming pools, golf courses and commutability to the metro area," Amey says. "Nowhere else is the array of amenities as strong as those provided in these communities, so much so that we have highlighted their differences on our website, LeesSummitLakeHomes.com.” http://leessummitlakehomes.com/lake-comparison/
