Editor's Letter

Let’s hear it for the furry friends! W

e never tire of creating a pet themed issue for our readers, and our hopes are that you don’t tire of reading them every year. At the Harrison house, we are third generation cat people. We usually have two dear fur balls living under our roof. Current felines are Boots and Jinx. But for a couple of crazy years there were three. ( Jasper, Boots and Abercrombie) During that time I noticed that there’s a fine line among those who have two of the same animal vs. those who have three. Dare I say, you get a few more raised eyebrows when you admit you have three cats, but two never seems to faze folks at all. I think three is when “crazy cat lady” begins to reveal herself… I’ve been paying special attention to the way pets provide real companionship for folks who live alone lately and I’ve come to realize that the furry friends among us can really be lifesavers. When I recently learned that local shelters are in need of short-term foster homes for many of their pets, I was intrigued. What a great way to give an animal a vacation from the shelter, or to really test drive whether or not your kids are ready for a new kind of pet. Some foster situations are ideal for quieter homes as the animals are recovering from medical procedures or are nervous around lots of people. One of my dear friends works in an office where certain pets are welcome for occasional visits. She’s noticed that everyone is a little happier and more social on the days when the doggies visit. Wouldn’t it be great if all of us had office pets? Still another friend has a daughter whose recent Girl Scout Gold Award project involved training their family dog to be a visiting companion dog at a senior living facility. She’d take that mellow brute of a dog to visit the residents once a week and she made instant friends the minute she walked in the door. The loneliness just melted away when there was an animal to pet. The next time you’re missing a furry friend in your life, take a moment to peruse the websites of a couple of KC’s shelters. Your new best friend is waiting for you and you didn’t even know it. Stay well neighbors and I’ll see you around town!

Most police dogs are cross-trained, so they can track people and drugs. They learn to scent on the ground, for the scent trail that a person leaves, and in the air. Air scenting is important, because that way a dog can sense if a suspect has circled back around to ambush the officer. The K9s are expected to do all of the disciplines in which they are certified. A majority of the local K9s are certified in narcotics, obedience, aggression, building and area search, article search and tracking. All certifications are completed through the North American Police Work Dog Association. Going to the Dogs, a new 501c3 nonprofit organization, focuses its efforts on improving the well-being of law enforcement K9s. The board of directors for Going to the Dogs works with law enforcement agencies on both sides of the state line to provide assistance for the K9 units. With budgetary constraints at the federal and state level, Going to the Dogs plans to fill the gap when funding is an issue. Going to the Dogs is hosting their first fundraising event Thursday, October 15, at the Alexander Majors House and Barn starting at 6 p.m. For more information, contact GoingToTheDogs2015@gmail.com.

PETCO FOUNDATION INVESTS IN WARRIORS' BEST FRIEND FOUNDATION'S SERVICE DOGS Warriors’ Best Friend Foundation of Kansas City, Mo., has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support Operation: Homestead, Warriors' Best Friend's program that provides service canines for wounded soldiers with Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) at no cost to the soldier. The grant was made possible through the Petco Foundation’s annual Helping Heroes fundraising campaign, in partnership with Natural Balance Pet Foods. KEEP THEM S.A.F.E. TRAINS CHILDREN TO SURVIVE ABDUCTION A new Missouri business, Keep Them S.A.F.E. LLC, is working to protect children from would-be child abductors by providing classes to help children identify dangerous situations and resist and escape attack. Following the kidnapping, rape and murder of an 11-year-old Missouri girl in 2014, Nick Spencer, a father, former Blue Springs police officer, and former United States Army enlisted soldier and team leader, was so devastated by the tragedy that he made it his mission to educate, equip and empower children to survive abduction. Spencer launched Keep Them S.A.F.E. LLC earlier this year with the aim of training as many children as possible, and potentially, saving lives. The organization, which teaches safety and self-defense classes to children ages five to 13, uses the acronym S.A.F.E. to teach kids how to scan, avoid, fight and escape dangerous situations. All classes are taught by instructors with law enforcement or military backgrounds. KeepThemSAFEUs.com

an $8 million renovation. In addition to improved climate controls, the renovation features the world’s largest fine-scale miniature collection and one of the nation’s largest collections of antique toys in new exhibits and hands-on experiences. The museum has lowered admission prices and expanded operating hours. STUDENTS VISIT GERMANY AS PART OF EXCHANGE PROGRAM This year marked the 25th anniversary of the exchange between Lee’s Summit schools and Walram Gymnasium in Menden, Germany. Fifteen students and three teachers spent nine days with host families in Menden before embarking on an adventure through central Europe. The student travelers consisted of Jake Nippert (LSHS), Kristin Powell (LSHS), Matthew Morawski (LSHS), Matthew Johnson (LSN), Geena Conrad (LSW), Cale Harms (LSN), Emma Johnson (LSW), Logan Steele (LSHS), Rabin Poudel (LSW), Jesslyn Jakobe (LSW), Alexander Stangohr (LSW), Julia Munsell (LSW), Amy Liu (LSHS), Shayla Smith (LSW) and Jerrica Patterson (LSHS). German teachers Rachel Benson (LSHS) and Julie Hume (LSW) were accompanied by Kendall Mellem, who founded the exchange program 25 years ago.

SPLASH PARK OPENS Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation Department added a splash pad to the summer water attractions offered residents. Located at Miller J. Fields Park, the feature is a centerpiece of the recently completed renovations to the park at 1301 SE Third Terrace. The new 4,500-square-foot feature was funded from Parks Capital Project Funds enabling construction of a 50-gallon super splash water bucket, 3 tube cannons, a bucket trio, 2 Splashpad Ombrellos, rainbow tunnel, numerous jet streams and fountain sprays, 18

many more water features, and a brand new restroom with baby changing tables in both the men’s and women’s. The Splashpad includes a Teen Bay, Family Water Bay and Toddler Bay.

HISTORY MUSEUM RECEIVES ACCOLADES The Lee’s Summit History Museum was recently awarded the Best Adaptive Re-Use Preservation Project in a tie with Cape Girardeau’s former Federal Building by Downtown by Missouri Main Street Connection. The Lee’s Summit History Museum is part of the $2.9 million cultural arts bond initiative passed in April 2013 by the residents of Lee’s Summit. Built in 1939 by the Works Progress Administration, the building at 220 SW Main St. has served as the U.S. Post Office, City Hall and offices for local nonprofit ReDiscover before becoming a history museum. The $660,000 restoration of the building allowed the Lee’s Summit Historical Society to move the town’s museum to a more prominent location with easy access for visitors and increased exhibit space. Hidden from visitors, the former museum space was tucked in the corner of the historic train depot and had limited space for exhibits and storage.

JIM WARE EXHIBIT AT GAMBER CENTER The Lee’s Summit Arts Council has selected local artist, Jim Ware, to exhibit several of his pieces in the gallery of the Gamber Community Center at 4 SE Independence Avenue. Ware has developed a unique style of painting that he calls “Dissociative Impressionism.” “It has to do with how I separate my critical brain and my painting hand in order to create more exciting brush strokes in a piece,” Ware explains. His style, rather than depicting what something looks like, captures the energy of an object or activity by joining quick strokes of the brush with a complete color palette. “My paintings never tell the whole story to the viewer as a realist painting would do. Instead, the viewer completes the painting in their own mind thereby making it their painting.” The show runs through October 15, 2015. It is free to the public. All paintings are for sale.

R-7 PROGRAM RESHAPES STUDENTS' EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE The Missouri Innovation Campus (MIC), a progressive collaboration between the Lee’s Summit School District, Metropolitan Community College and the University of Central Missouri, has begun work on the initiative’s fourth program, Cyber Security. During July, more than 20 cyber security professionals from 11 regional companies worked with instructors from Summit Technology Academy, MCC and UCM to identify industry standard cyber security competencies that will drive the MIC new program. The Cyber Security program will begin in June 2016. Other Missouri Innovation campus programs are System Engineering Technology, Design and Drafting and Software Development/Programming. Through the Missouri Innovation Campus, located within Lee’s Summit R-7’s Summit Technology Academy and UCM, students are able to accelerate the time it takes to graduate from college and participate in high-tech paid internships while dramatically reducing the cost of a four-year program.

re you ready to get fit? Starting to exercise or increasing the amount of exercise you’re doing is a great step toward a healthy lifestyle. However, doing the same exercise every day won’t help you maintain your fitness in the long run. To get fit and stay fit, your body needs variety. According to Brad McCleary, owner of Bodies Health and Fitness, different body parts need different workouts in order to keep fit. “By mixing it up, you work different muscles in different ways. This variety helps keep your metabolism burning calories and keeps your muscles strong and limber,” says McCleary. To get fit, you need to include three types of exercise in weekly routine: cardiovascular, strength training and stretching. Get your heart pumping: Cardiovascular exercises, those that work your heart and lungs, are key to losing weight, preventing heart disease and maintaining overall health. These exercises include: speed walking, running, swimming, hiking, biking, tennis, soccer, basketball and dancing, among others. The American Heart Association recommends at least 30-minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise five times a week to maintain overall health. If you are starting a new exercise, be sure to work up to that 30 minutes, says McCleary. “You are more likely to be successful if you start out doing 5 minutes or 10 minutes and add to that time, then if you start at 30 minutes. Let your body adjust to this new routine and then it will start to crave more.” Pump some iron: Strength training is important in maintaining and gaining muscle mass. Increasing muscle offers you several advantages, says McCleary. Muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue. By increasing muscle tissue, you increase the number of calories your body burns while at rest and while exercising. Also, muscle is more dense than fat. By adding strength training to your workout and increasing your muscle, you will lose inches and look and feel better. Lastly, strength training will make your muscles stronger so they can support your skeletal structure and bones. “Strong muscles help hold you upright and support your spine, neck and head, whether you’re walking or running a marathon,” says McCleary. Strength training exercises include those that incorporate free weights, resistance bands, weight and resistance machines and exercises that use your own body weight as resistance such as push-ups, pull-ups and squats. Stay flexible: Strength training, exercising and aging can tighten up muscles and tendons. “When muscles, tendons and ligaments are tight, they are more susceptible to injury,” says McCleary. Doing 5-10 minutes of stretching after cardio and strength training workouts will increase your flexibility. Adding a workout that only focuses on stretching will provide you even more benefits. Stretching and flexibility workouts, such as yoga, teach you how to control breathing, focus and relax. Before starting any new exercise program, be sure to have a physical and make sure there are no physical concerns or limitations. “A personal trainer can work with you to develop a program that will help you reach your fitness and health goals,” says McCleary.

P

rescott is a handsome 8-month-old Pit Bull mix with a lot of energy and the eagerness to learn. He is at Great Plains SPCA’s no kill shelter in Independence waiting for a family who will keep him active and work on basic puppy training with him. Prescott is sometimes a little apprehensive around other dogs and plays a little rowdy because of his energetic personality. Even though Prescott is receiving all the love and attention that he needs at the shelter, he deserves a family to call his own. Prescott and hundreds of other pets are currently waiting for their forever homes at the two area campuses in Merriam and Independence. Great Plains SPCA (GPSPCA) provides lifesaving services to 35,000 pets and their human companions each year. The no-kill shelter works to drive change in the Kansas City community through innovative programs that promote adoption, outreach, vet care and a better life for pets and the people who love them. Many in the community think that GPSPCA is affiliated as a chapter of the national organization, ASPCA. However, Great Plains SPCA is a local 501(c)3 non-profit, relying on local donations to help local pets. This means that our organization does not receive government funding or grants. We rely solely on local donors to provide resources to thousands of Kansas City Metro area pets each year. Online fundraisers, signature events, mailings and in-kind donations help efficiently run the 12 lifesaving programs that make GPSPCA the leading animal welfare organization in our community. Pets like Prescott count on community members’ generosity to ensure that GPSPCA continues to help thousands of pets each year.

Style Wise

T

he crisp air is arriving and the leaves will be falling soon. As you prepare to transition your wardrobe into the next season, Summit Fair is buzzing with new arrivals and several great trends for fall. Two of the most wearable include the vintage Boho trend which has flowed perfectly from spring all the way to fall. Pair these looks with brimmed hats, boots, plaid prints and graphic tees. Second, dark printed florals with pops of bright color are the perfect mix of feminine and romantic for the fall season. Anyone can pull off either of these trends with the right pieces. A mix of classic wardrobe staples like a great fitting pair of denim and a tan trench coat are must-haves for mastering these fall looks.

FALL FLORALS

The trick with the fall floral trend is to find prints that are a little darker and edgier. The moody floral prints can be paired with classic pieces or worn in a more grunge inspired way as a nod to the 90s west coast style. Finding accessory pieces like a scarf or canvas tote with a darker floral pattern is a great way to experiment with the style in your existing wardrobe before going full force into it. The look shown here is a more transitional way to wear the trend. It features washed out black denim and the darker printed floral scarf paired with a classic trench coat and pop of color for shoes. Lavender Top (Charlotte Russe $21.99); Trench Coat (Charlotte Russe $36.99); Black Jeans (Maurices $34); Floral shawl/scarf (Charlotte Russe $10.99); Pink Pumps (DSW $59.95) Hair: Courtesy of Beauty Brands at Summit Fair by Senior Stylist Natasha Combs.

BOHO VINTAGE

The Boho and 70s vibe has been trending since early spring. It has evolved slightly through summer and is still very prominent in the stores for the fall season. This look is synonymous with brimmed hats, head bands, head scarves, rolled sleeves, wrists full of jewelry, and vintage tees. Plaid is replacing many of the floral prints in the Boho attire that we saw earlier in the year. Layering is also very important when creating this look. Long length button ups, wraps or vests layered with graphic tees or vintage band shirts are important with this trend. Fringe is also still very popular this season. Fringe cardi wraps, boots and handbags will continue to be hot items in fall fashion. Plaid Shirt (Buckle $54.95); Graphic Tee (Buckle $21.95); Dark Wash Jeggings ( Maurices $34); Boots (Charlotte Russe $40.99); Hat (Rue21 $14.99), Tan Tote Bag (Maurices $39); Bracelets (Buckle $19.95)

Lee’s Summit Police Department K-9s FOUR-LEGGED HEROES: READY TO PROTECT AND SERVE ARTICLE ANN E. BUTENAS | PHOTOGRAPHY MCKENNA MATHEWSON

S

cott McMilian’s job has gone to the dogs, and he’s okay with that. In fact, he has no shame reflex in admitting that he actually enjoys it. An officer in the Lee’s Summit Police Department, McMilian has been serving the community on the force since 1997. His duties often require long hours at times when most of us are fast asleep. Fortunately, he has a hard-working partner working right alongside him, keeping a steady pace while still managing to wag his tail. McMilian works alongside Enzo, a Belgian Malinois that has been specifically trained for a cornucopia of duties within the police force. He clocks in just like McMilian, sometimes logging over-time hours but never complaining in the process. Working a 40-50 hour week is par for the course for this four-legged, crime fighting K-9, but his efforts are not without their rewards. “As long as he gets some play time or gets to enjoy the occasional game of tug-of-war with an officer in a fight suit, he feels compensated in full,” says McMilian, noting that Enzo lives with McMilian and his family and, once retired, will continue staying with the family. “Theses dogs definitely become part of our family and are often quite protective of us.” Enzo is the seventh dog to serve on the force and has definitely earned his stripes. He is joined in his line of duty with Griff, another German shepherd who works alongside Officer Steve Grubb. 26

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | September 2015

Initially, the dogs are trained by someone who is hired to choose and test each dog, and the training process can last from four to six months, depending on the dog. “Once trained, we meet with the dog and the trainer for about four to six weeks so that we can learn to work together,” explains McMilian. “From that point on, it becomes our job to train the dog on a daily basis. The training never ends, for the dogs and for us.” Enzo and Griff are trained for numerous purposes and have developed respectable resumes in the process. “Vehicle sniffs for other officers who stop a car and need a search conducted are one of the biggest things these dogs do,” says McMilian. Other duties the dogs assume include human tracking, whether a perpetrator on the loose or a missing person; area searches; finding drugs such as methamphetamine, marijuana, cocaine and heroin; building searches; article searches; and lost property searches. (Yes, Enzo and Griff have done their fair share of finding lost keys, flashlights and cell phones.) What is most interesting about these K-9s is the impact they have had with respect to the use of force when pursuing a suspect. “Since I have been working with Enzo, I have had less uses of force compared to what I had before he came along,” explains

Officer Scott McMilian and Enzo

McMilian. “When a dogs shows up, people listen and behave more, as they know they cannot fight him or out run him. This can essentially reduce the danger in a situation.” Most of these working dogs begin their jobs at roughly one and a half to two years of age and enjoy an average career of about five to eight years. Along with their handlers, they are certified annually after successfully completing specific designated tasks. So, do Enzo and Griff lead the pack when it comes to job performance within the department? “Let’s just say that if they had thumbs, I’d be out of a job,” laughs McMilian, who jokes that probably the only thing these dogs can’t do is drive a car. nline blogs give writers an opportunity to share their words with a world-wide audience. We enjoy introducing our readers to local bloggers we think they might enjoy following. Lee's Summit Lifestyle: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Courtney Hill: I am a wife and mother of twins. I have a master’s degree in family and consumer sciences and taught high school FCS for four years before deciding to stay home. I grew up in a smaller Missouri town and I learned to cook mostly from my mom who learned from her mom. I’m a Midwest girl through and through. My style of cooking is simple and country kitchen approved. LSL: When did you start blogging? CH: January 2015 LSL: Why did you start blogging? CH: To have a creative outlet and to help others learn to cook. I love teaching people and having fun, so I hope those who see my blog learn something and are entertained. LSL: Who is the target audience for your blog? CH: Anyone who loves good, simple food but doesn’t necessarily live to cook. My recipes are easy to follow, even for beginners, and don’t take all day to make. LSL: Where do you get the inspiration for your posts? CH: From my mother and all the recipes I had growing up, from my 28

teaching days and the recipes we used in class, from Pinterest and sometimes from my own brain! Once you understand the basics of cooking it pretty simple to adapt recipes and figure out what will taste good. LSL: What's been the most popular/viewed post on your blog to date? CH: My “Easter Feaster” post, where I show how to make ham, gravy, mashed potatoes and deviled eggs. LSL: What's your favorite local restaurant/family attraction? CH: Two of my favorites aren’t strictly local but they aren’t found everywhere. Freddy’s Frozen Custard, right here in Lee’s Summit, has the best burgers and shoestring fries ever and they serve amazing frozen custard. RA Sushi in Leawood is my husband and I’s go-to date night spot. The best sushi I’ve ever had, anywhere! LSL: What else do you want us to know? CH: I have an Etsy shop and a booth at Ugly Class and Company in the West Bottoms where I sell my handmade bags and various items. I’m a crafty girl who loves to sew, cook and create. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to have my own cooking show. I named it “Cooking with Courtney” and I even had a theme song all written out. I think I provide an entertaining and educational view on cooking and I’d love to know that I was helping others learn to cook and enjoy the process. This blog is my version of “Cooking with Courtney” and I hope that you all watch, read and then do! CountryKitchenApproved.Blogspot.com

In the last few years, Courtney has literally and figuratively been herding cats. She has taken the least desirable, yet functional, facilities and parlayed them into brand new, state of the art centers serving everyone’s needs. Besides overcoming physical facility needs, Courtney has also breathed life into community outreach and engagement. This is just a sampling of what she and her team are up to: • Encouraging residents to shelter pets in their homes • Operating an intake process which facilitates surrendering a pet to the facility, rather than just leaving it on the streets • Providing a Behavior and Training program to help adoptive parents and pets adapt to each other • Young Heroes Camp, providing education and interaction regarding animal welfare to young children during the summer • SASSY Program (Shelter Animlas + Seniors + Supportive Youth) – helping seniors lead productive and fulfilling lives by creating and strengthening relationships with pets • Operation Furballs – a low-cost spay and neuter program • Working with PACK (Pet/Animal Coalition of Kansas) an animal advocacy group working to help animals in the metro, state and region through legislation.

As if all of that weren’t enough, the GPSPCA group makes pet care and adoption fun! They have created a permanent and pervasive social media presence; they find themes for pet adoption events (think holidays and costumes); they appreciate and applaud kids who hold fundraisers or birthday gifting parties for animals; and they fancy themselves matchmakers for people and pets. Despite Courtney’s incredible success with animal welfare, there are still some enormous challenges ahead. Here is what she wants us to know: • Their needs are ongoing… 800 pets per day need help • A new intake facility is needed • More education is essential in the community and neighborhood outreach efforts • And, of course donations and volunteers are always needed! People are needed to walk dogs, socialize cats, work special events, assist in the medical center, and provide administrative help to the office. Her parting words to animal lovers everywhere are, “Come and visit and you will fall in love! It is not a sad place, it is a place of great hope for our furry friends.” And, if you see Courtney running around in a rain coat and rain boots, just know she’s trying to keep her head above water!

T

he heart of a city is its downtown district, and anyone who visits ours senses something special about it. History combines with modern day shopping, traditional stores complement unique boutiques, art augments eateries, the practical dwells with the beautiful, friendly shop owners welcome patrons, fun events create accessibility. Everything that goes on downtown is heartfelt and contributes to that great hometown feel. There’s something else quite special about the center of our city, and it surely impacts the feel of downtown, too: more than 60 of the businesses are owned by women. Many a philosopher has pondered the idea “if women ruled the world,” and downtown Lee’s Summit offers a glimpse of the answer. We celebrate these women who juggle being CEOs of their businesses and their homes. Shopping becomes something more when you shop with people who have a heart connection to their business and community, and these women definitely do.

“I love balancing my judgeship ( 1 day/wk ) with my private law practice( 4 days/wk . I was born and raised here, and I am proud to be a resident. Not only will I always call Lee’s Summit home, but I wanted to establish my business here as well. I enjoy my private law practice because it enables me to help people get through what could be the most adverse and stressful time in their life.”

Goodbye, Child Care Costs … Hello, College Savings Opportunities I

f you’re a working parent, you know firsthand about the difficulties of finding quality, affordable care for your children. But eventually, your kids head off to school, and those child care bills go away, or at least diminish greatly. When that happens, you could start putting away money for another one of your children’s milestones: college. Just how expensive is child care? Costs vary greatly among the 50 states, but the national average for a 4 year old at a child care center is approximately $7,880 per year, according to Child Care Aware of America, a child care resource and referral agency sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. What could you do with this money once your child enters kindergarten? Of course, not all schools provide all-day kindergarten, so you still may have some child care costs. For the purposes of illustration, let’s presume you can finally say “goodbye” to child care costs when your child is in first grade, and let’s also assume your child is attending a public school. If you invested that $7,880 every year for 12 years, until your child reaches 18, you could accumulate more than $150,000 in a tax-advantaged college savings account, such as a 529 plan — assuming the money was placed in a hypothetical investment that earned 7 percent per year. (Keep in mind, though, that the word “hypothetical” means exactly that, because whenever you put money in any variable investment, there are no guarantees.) Actually, earnings in a 529 plan accumulate and are distributed tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax and a 10 percent

48

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | September 2015

IRS penalty on the earnings.) Also, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. However, 529 plans vary, so be sure to check with your tax advisor regarding deductibility. A 529 plan offers other benefits, too. For one thing, the lifetime contribution limits are generous; while these limits vary by state, some plans allow contributions well in excess of $200,000. And a 529 plan is flexible: If your child decides against college or vocational school, you can transfer the unused funds to another family member, tax and penalty free. A 529 plan is a widely used choice for college savings, but it is not your only option. You could also consider a Coverdell Education Savings Account, which, like a 529 plan, can generate tax-free earnings if the money is used for higher education expenses. You can typically only put in a maximum of $2,000 per year to a Coverdell account, but it lets you use the funds on K-12 and college expenses. Whichever college-savings vehicle you choose, it will take discipline on your part to continue investing in it, year after year. And after freeing yourself from those child care bills, you can certainly think of other ways to use this “found” money. That’s why you might want to automatically move money from your checking or savings account to your 529 plan, Coverdell account or other investment earmarked for college. As your income rises over the years, you can increase the amount of these automatic transfers. In any case, once those child care bills stop, you can put that money to work on your children’s behalf. Make the most of this opportunity. This article provided by our friends at Edward Jones Financial Advisors in Lee’s Summit.

Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks ARTICLE JENNY WOLFF | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

here’s a new spa in town! The spa is for dogs and the town is Peculiar, Missouri, just a short 20 miles south of Lee’s Summit on 291 Highway. The Peculiar Paw Spa & Canine Academy is located in a newly renovated building on Main Street. It offers grooming and a whole lot more. The business is operated by Greg Hobson, a professional Canine Behaviorist. “I received my Certified Professional Dog Trainer credentials from a school in Austin, Texas,” says Hobson. As soon as Hobson opened up shop he attracted clients who rave about his service. “I think the world of Greg. He is fabulous!” says Lori Marlin. She and her husband Tony adopted a shelter dog. Their new companion, Zoie, is a Basenji mix; the Marlins soon realized that their new pet was headstrong. So when they heard about Hobson and his training expertise through a neighbor, they gave Hobson a call. Hobson worked with Zoie weekly, teaching her to stay in the yard, walk on a leash and become less reactive to other dogs and people. Hobson coached the Marlins, showing them that much of dog training is watching for a dog’s signals. “Not only did Greg train Zoie, he trained us as well,” says Lori. “We now know how to look for signs of aggression and we have learned to react immediately to unwanted behavior. Zoie still can be a little pistol, but she is much calmer now that Greg has worked with her.” “We teach pet owners the need to establish a hierarchy in the home, where the dog understands that he or she is not the boss,” says Hobson. “Owners need to let the dogs know that the human is in charge. Dogs are communicating 24 hours a day, and reading this communication is very important. We show owners how to develop bigger and broader views of their animals and their relationships with them.” Peculiar Paw Spa & Canine Academy offers obedience classes, or a dog owner may book private one-on-one training or in-home

consultation. During class, pets learn socialization, discipline and consistency. Pet parents will learn more about their animals and how to use positive reinforcement. “We cater to pet people, and we are customer service freaks!” says Hobson. “We want to fix the problem that you are having with your dog. We want to make all our clients— human and canine—leave our facility with smiles on their faces.” If a client needs doggie daycare, boarding or even physical therapy, Peculiar Paw Spa & Canine Academy can help. “We offer five different yards surrounded by a six-foot wooden privacy fence where we can work with small and large dogs, and our activity yards help a pet improve its agility.” Professional pet photography is also available twice a month. Although Peculiar Paw Spa & Canine Academy is a new business, Hobson says they have big dreams of creating philanthropic programs to give back to the community. “We want to set an example of how dogs can be a useful part of society, and in the near future we plan to do rescues, adoptions and much more.” Hobson also would like to take pets to nursing homes and into schools, where he says dogs can actually help children learn to read. YOU’LL NEED A RESERVATION FOR DOWNTOWN’S NEW SPEAKEASY

Y

ou will need an appointment if you choose to visit the office of O.C. Woods M.D. at 6 1/2 S.W. 3rd Street in historic downtown Lee’s Summit. Disguised as a doctor’s office, like some of the speakeasy type bars were during the prohibition era, The W specializes in vintage and rare liquors that are rarely seen at most “regular” bars, but this is no regular bar. The W requires a reservation to get in and if you are lucky enough to snag one of their 36 seats, it is not Dr. Woods that will give you an elixir to cure what ails you, but head mixologist and craft bartender Mike Strohm, whose 19 years of bartending has given him the knowledge to fix just about anything. He uses fresh herbs, spices, fruits, bitters and unique liquors to make up the ever-changing cocktail list at The W.

ARTICLE SHARMIN MEADOWS | PHOTOGRAPHY MCKENNA MATHEWSON 52

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | September 2015

Strohm is passionate about using locally sourced ingredients for the drinks. “Eventually, I plan on growing and producing all of the non-alcohol ingredients used at The W, including honey, eggs and sugar. My yard has peach trees, blueberry bushes and this year I will be planting apple trees. In addition, I have herbs, fruits and vegetables growing in raised beds, pots and anywhere else there is dirt,” says Strohm. The Spifflicated Sheba is a good example of how Strohm uses his ingredients. It has farmers market strawberry syrup, Wood + Salt merlot-infused sea salt, homegrown basil, Old Tom gin, lemon juice, egg whites from locally sourced eggs and pink peppercorns. It is almost too pretty to drink with it’s gorgeous red hue and white-foamed top. The cocktails at The W are truly handcrafted recipes and not just some vodka and cranberry thrown together. Strohm’s love of bartending history is part of the allure to this special place. He can tell you what part of the world and time period a drink came from, as well as how he has made it his own. If the drinks at The W do not blow you away, the decor will. The W is owned by a Lee’s Summit couple. After considering locations in downtown Kansas City they settled on historic downtown Lee’s Summit and the entire project was designed and constructed by the two. The W opened in June and is a labor of love. The couple spent the two years prior to the opening recreating the space by hand, starting with inside demolition. They rebuilt the space by putting in new walls, electrical, tile, paint, brick, plumbing and everything else that goes into making a functional space. They hand-hammered the copper top bar, made the railings, spindles, wood trim and everything else in between. Much of what was pulled out during the demolition was repurposed and used again, including the hardwood floors that now serve as trim for the tables. Unique decor items include a “push” door plaque acquired from the observation deck of the Empire State Building, door handles from the demolished RCA Victor building in Detroit and elephant bar rails from the late 1880s out of Chicago, and of course Dr. O.C. Woods nameplate out of his Macon, Georgia, office from the early 1900s. The W is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Reservations can be made via text to 816.287.0000. The W is a modern-day take on a 1920s speakeasy.

The GLA is Mercedes’ Smallest CUV ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

C

ompact crossovers continue to populate the automotive landscape. These scaled-down utility vehicles are primed for urban use because they are small enough to slip easily through congestion, haul various kinds of cargo and do so while returning good gas mileage. The Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4Matic is one of the newest and it’s powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 208 horsepower. The base price of $33,300 puts it squarely in the sight of young buyers. The all-wheel-drive GLA is related to the CLA sedan. A frontwheel-drive GLA will be available next spring for about $2,000 less. Styling makes the new crop of compact crossovers appealing, and the little Benz is one of the best looking of its kind. It has a bold nose and a low, sleek roof that ends in a large tailgate. The GLA, at 173 inches long, 60 inches tall and 71 inches wide, is the smallest crossover Mercedes offers. It is roughly 5 inches shorter and 8 inches lower than the larger GLK crossover whose base price is about $8,000 more. Even though all-wheel drive is standard, and the car sits further off the ground (for that very occasional off-road trek), the GLA feels and drives like a sedan. The test car’s optional 19-inch wheels filled the fenders nicely and added a beefy look but the ride was often rather thumpy over expansion strips or sharp bumps. There was a fair amount of road or tire noise through the cabin at highway speeds as well. When I pushed the GLA hard into a turn the tires felt a bit mushy. The 2.0-liter engine is rated at 24 miles per gallon in the city and 32 on the highway. I only drove the car for a little more than a day, and the onboard computer read 21.4 mpg in city driving.

The twin-scroll turbo delivers decent torque, but I found that off-themark acceleration was a bit soft, due in part to the seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic’s tendency to shift into as high a gear as possible for optimum mileage. Mercedes says the base GLA hits 60 miles per hour in 7.1 seconds and has a top track speed of 130 mph. Switching from Eco to Sport mode brought noticeable life to the car although mileage would suffer some. The engine seemed a bit noisy at full throttle. Performance buffs will be pleased to know that a GLA45 AMG is also available. Mercedes says it is the most powerful series-produced four-cylinder turbo in the world. It has 355 horsepower, and that’s a power output of 178 horsepower per liter. The base price for that jewel is $48,300. The transmission has a mode for light off-road use. The DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) mode enables the car to control itself on steep descents. The LCD screen has an off-road display that shows percent of gradient, a compass, the roll angle and DSR activation. The GLA’s interior reflects the youthful audience for which the car is intended. Five round air vents dominate the instrument panel. A wood grain or metallic trim panel arcs across the dash behind the vents, creating a feeling of open space and style. Mbrace2 is an infotainment system that provides emergency notification as well as on-the-go access to the Internet. Owners are able to use their smartphone to lock or unlock the car from a distance and instantly find it in a parking lot. A 5.8-inch LCD screen (7 inches if you choose the multimedia option) sits in the center of the instrument panel. Navigation has a CONTINUED >

“I knew this was my chance… 500 acres to drive the housing boom I knew was coming.” -Jim Riffe, Developer

When more than 500 acres became available on 150 Hwy across from the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area, Jim Riffe seized the opportunity.

His instincts and experience tell him that kind of growth is imminent along 150 Hwy, just south of Lee’s Summit in the award winning Lee’s Summit school district.

Master Builder/Developer Jim Riffe’s custom homes grace the landscape of more than 80 communities including Loch Lloyd, Deer Creek, Hallbrook, Longview Estates, Nottingham and Iron Horse. He was there when growth swept from College and Roe extending well beyond 199th Street in Johnson County. He saw the opportunity again when he developed Woodland Shores across from Legacy Park.

He hired the best landscape architects and land planners to execute his artistic vision. He assembled a team of custom builders who support exceptional goals. The result is a community rich in amenities that harmonize with the natural beauty in this expanse of rolling terrain and mature trees. Visit Woodland Trails and see how one local developer’s artistic vision is defining the area’s strongest housing boom.

“When I envisioned the pool and pavilion, I wanted people to feel the excitement they feel on their first day of vacation at a luxurious Colorado resort.” -Jim Riffe

Birds on a Wire

Parting Thoughts

O

ne of my dear friends is a painter who sees the world through her amazing artist eyes. When she was the newbie in our neighborhood, her heart was sensitive to how to integrate her family into the community. Driving one day she noticed how birds perched on a telephone wire seemed to choose when to gather, and who to pause with. As she watched the birds sit, and then come and go, those birds spoke to her of how we create community, who we keep counsel with, and even the dynamic nature of the process. She had moved in down the street, and it was my love of her work that initially drew us together. We shared a moment of connection on my front porch steps, and lingered like birds chatting on the telephone wire, before we flew off back to our hectic lives. Over the years, through working on house projects, painting together, building a club, learning new skills together, cooking meals together, playing cards as couples, we’d pause from the “flights” our lives demanded (me flying around in my minivan and she in her Mini Cooper) to sit like those birds on a wire and talk over tea. This is how we became friends. That is community. That is how community begins and how it grows. These one-on-one connections expand and extend and become a beautiful web of interconnectedness. Through words,

“I Think I’ve Got This” by Lisa Lala | Birds on a Wire Series

stories, shared experiences and common interests, we find inspiration to create our communities. My friend’s keen observations became the main theme of a series that has become her signature. The beauty of her Birds on a Wire series, and her reflections on community, have inspired me to embrace and celebrate more the important place it has in our lives. We live in such an individualistic society that our personal empowerment sometimes overshadows the significance of our need for each other. Like the ingredients of an exceptional recipe, or the materials used to construct a quality home, a community is only as good as the people who comprise it. Because the people are who ignite an idea, imagine a future, share an event, take the bull by the horns, see a need and fill it, spread the word about a new business, open their home to new families, bring a meal when there’s an illness, invest in a neighbor or believe in a student, give witness to struggles and celebrate successes. Our magazine is your “wire.” Let us pause to read the stories that have been inspired by our community, to drink in the beautiful photographs that paint the story of us. Email your editor and publisher, or better yet reach out and enjoy a cup of coffee together. Let us stop here in the pages of our publication each month and celebrate like birds on a wire, before we fly off back to our busy lives. You inspire us.
