In order to be your best, you have to sleep your best. Whether it is consultation regarding lifestyle changes or testing for vitamin D-3 deficiency, we are here for you. We can also assess your need for a CPAP, or another device to help you sleep and fight sleep apnea. A much better approach to treating apnea is the Panthera device. It is made by a dentist and brings your chin forward (just like in doing CPR) to open the airway. It is very effective and easy to wear. For most people it does the job as well as a CPAP and in some cases even better. There are many other ways to deal with apnea- most of these are surgical-but the above ideas are simple and generally quite easy to implement for most people.

His knowledge in the combined fields of TMJ, sleep and orthodontics has given him a perspective unlike most other practitioners who perform basic dentistry. In addition, he has also learned the advanced techniques involved in expanding an airway so that both children and adults can breathe better.

Take time to understand what investments you have and their risk level.
Dramatic headlines shouldn’t pull investment strategy off track, say Steigerwald, Gordon & Koch Wealth Advisors.
ARTICLE BY GLENYE OAKFORD
The financial markets’ winds are always shifting. That can make investing feel more like a roller coaster than a reliable path to building wealth. So how should everyday investors navigate uncertain times? We asked Chartered Financial Analyst Jeff Gordon and Certified Financial Planner Darren
“Instead of reacting to every market-moving headline, focus on the economy’s fundamentals and your long-term plan.”
Koch at Steigerwald, Gordon & Koch Wealth Advisors in Leesburg.
Smart investing isn’t about reacting—it’s about planning. An emotional reaction in the heat of the moment can do more harm than good.
“One helpful way to look at it, and one thing that we do internally here, is to look at headwinds and tailwinds,” Gordon said. “We understand that there are things like tariffs, geopolitical events, and inflationary trends, but we balance that with potential tax cuts, Federal Reserve policies, and industry growth.
“Election cycles or six sigma events, as we call them—whether they be a pandemic or a global financial crisis—they’re going to happen. But sometimes the biggest volatility moments create the best opportunities.”
Even when one market sector is down, others might be performing well.
“Since around the midpoint of last year, we’re seeing a lot more inclusion, in terms of different sectors that are doing well,” Gordon noted. “There are healthcare names, there are financial names, there are industrial names which are reporting better earnings than they were a year ago.”
Instead of reacting to every market-moving headline, focus on the economy’s fundamentals and your long-term plan.
If you invest in a stock, take time to understand what that company does and how it makes money. If you prefer funds, learn about asset allocation and risk level.
For those new to investing or looking for a simple way to diversify, index funds, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) can be great options. “These allow investors to make small contributions

over time into a diversified basket of stocks without having to research 40 or 50 companies on their own,” Koch explained. “As you accumulate assets, you can create your own specific, diversified portfolio that’s based on your own risk tolerance and personal situation. But starting with index funds or ETFs can be a great way to begin.”
A properly diversified portfolio can help you weather market storms by ensuring that all your assets are not concentrated in a single stock, industry, or asset class.
One of the easiest ways to build wealth over time is to invest consistently, even if you’re only making small contributions.
“Automatic investing plans and the push to have people automatically enrolled in 401(k) plans at work are all positives,” Gordon said. “Making it automatic where you almost don’t even think about it is very important.”
“Everything that’s on your balance sheet and your cash flow statement ultimately feeds into your overall financial picture,” Koch said. “Investing is one piece of the overall pie.” Tracking your income, expenditures, and debt can reveal opportunities to economize. Then set a date each year to take a deeper dive on your overall financial picture and tweak as needed. And get a handle on high-interest debt, like credit cards, which can quickly erode your wealth.
What should you be asking your financial advisor right now? Koch suggests asking “Based on my needs, how are we managing through this current market environment?” to assess whether your
“You want to feel that you can ask questions without hesitation and your advisor truly listens and understands your goals.”
investment strategy aligns with your personal goals and risk tolerance.
Koch and Gordon also stress the importance of understanding how your advisor gets paid. Some receive commissions from selling annuities or insurance, so ask about that. Fee-only advisors, like those at Steigerwald, Gordon & Koch Wealth Advisors, might charge a fee based on your total assets, by the hour or plan, or through a retainer. Their advice won’t be influenced by potential commissions from insurance or annuity sales. Check napfa.org to find fee-only, fiduciary financial planners.
Steigerwald, Gordon & Koch Wealth Advisors also are fiduciaries, meaning they have a duty to act in their client’s best interest—a critical factor when choosing an investment professional. Build a financial team—CFP, CFA, CPA, and
estate-planning attorney—who can provide a comprehensive view of your financial roadmap.
Regular check-ins, at least once or twice a year, can help your financial plan stay on track.
“One thing we do as a firm is send out a weekly communication to clients, which basically talks about economic events that happened and how it’s going to affect their portfolio,” said Gordon.
“And at the end of each meeting, we ask clients, ‘If we don’t hear from you, when would you like us to reach out to you?’ That way, they dictate the frequency of communication,” Koch said. “You want to feel that you can ask questions without hesitation and your advisor truly listens and understands your goals. A good advisor should make you feel welcome, not like you’re bothering them.”

Your property is more than just land—it’s an investment. Whether you want to boost value, increase functionality, or prepare for future projects, land grooming is a strategic way to maximize your return. Veterans Land Rescue coined the term “land grooming” to set a higher standard in property enhancement. As an upper-echelon choice, Veterans Land Rescue transforms neglected spaces into valuable assets. Here’s why investing in land grooming is one of the smartest moves you can make.
Veterans Land Rescue doesn’t just clear land—they groom it to a park-like appearance, helping you build a stronger investment. To start elevating your property’s potential and put your land to work, visit veteransllc.us .
1. Unlock Hidden Potential
Overgrown brush and unwanted trees limit your land’s usability. Clearing the excess opens up opportunities for new construction, agriculture, or recreational space—turning underutilized land into a productive, income-generating asset.
2. Increase Property Value and Appeal
A well-groomed property commands higher market value and attracts more buyers. Professional land grooming enhances curb appeal, improves safety, and ensures your land looks its best—whether you plan to sell or develop in the future.
3. Protect and Improve Land Health
Investing in land grooming isn’t just about aesthetics. It also prevents erosion, improves drainage, and promotes healthier soil. By managing overgrowth and maintaining the land, you’re preserving its long-term value and sustainability.

Beth Gibney from An Anchored Life shares how to practice mindfulness, meditation, and yoga for overall wellbeing.
Beth Gibney first turned to yoga and meditation to help her slow down the pace of her life.
“The practices helped me to shift my attention inward, away from the busy distractions of life,” she said. “Gaining this skill of turning inward has helped me navigate all the challenges of my adult life.”
Some of those challenges have included chronic pain, chronic illness, cancer treatment, and big milestones like childbearing challenges and multiple outof-state moves.
“Mindfulness doesn’t stop hardships from happening,” said Gibney, who started her practice in 1996. “It gives us the awareness to choose how we want to respond to them. Yoga has given me the ability to be with emotions and sensations without judgment, while meditation has given me strong muscles of hope.”
Investing in mental and physical health with mindfulness practices, like meditation and yoga, pay off immediately and create lasting, positive change.
“I watch clients transform their tension to relaxation and hear stories about their increased clarity and sense of peace after just one $15 session,” Gibney said. “Mindfulness is an investment in wellness that affects us personally and improves how we connect in relationships at home and work.”
So what exactly are mindfulness, meditation, and yoga?
“I describe mindfulness as an umbrella term for any activity in which we are choosing to be present, on purpose, without judgment,” Gibney said. “We are naturally mindful when we listen to the sound of a baby laughing, play with a pet, or admire a beautiful sunset.
“In Hatha Yoga, postures and breathwork draw attention inward and prepare us for sustained concentration in meditation,” she added.
“While we can move mindfully or meditate for just one minute and feel better, we feel best with consistent practice.”
Research on yoga and meditation shows clear benefits to well-being and longevity. “I see my yoga clients gain strength, balance and flexibility, and an even more important ability to respect the needs of their body,” Gibney said. “I witness my meditation clients develop focus, an ability to ride the waves of life, and a deeper trust in their intuition. My group class clients laugh with each other and appreciate connecting with people who want to enhance their life. Mindfulness, yoga, and meditation all build stronger muscles of awareness and connection to ourselves and others.”
“MINDFULNESS DOESN’T STOP HARDSHIPS FROM HAPPENING. IT GIVES US THE AWARENESS TO CHOOSE HOW WE WANT TO RESPOND TO THEM. YOGA HAS GIVEN ME THE ABILITY TO BE WITH EMOTIONS AND SENSATIONS WITHOUT JUDGMENT, WHILE MEDITATION HAS GIVEN ME STRONG MUSCLES OF HOPE.”
Gibney suggests weaving a mindfulness practice into each day, starting in the morning.
“Pausing for five minutes in the morning shifts my attention from the to-do list over to a long list of what’s already going well in my life,” she said. “I pause to give thanks before eating and notice that I can relax my tense shoulders and slow my fast pace. Sitting in meditation in the evening helps me let go of the day and sleep well. I can tell if I haven’t meditated enough when I have bad dreams. My mind is used to the unwinding that happens in meditation!”
Start by noticing your intention for your practice. Gibney asks every client, “If you could receive something from this practice, even if it feels like a miracle, what would you like to feel or heal?”
Desire for growth, she said, is the foundation of your practice. “Look around at the space where you are reading this sentence to notice the colors and sounds around you,” she said. “Notice the movement and the stillness. Observe your breath flowing in and out, and decide if you want to soften any muscle tension. You’re being mindful! Mindfulness is simply making the choice to be present without judgment. I teach mindfulness techniques to help people feel comfortable with pausing to be present. If it doesn’t feel comfortable to be still, that’s OK. Take a walk and notice what you see in the space.”
Gibney frequently hears people say their minds are too busy to sit still in meditation. “In that case we create a practice that links steady body movement with the mind in the present moment,” she said. “I also hear people say, ‘I’m not flexible enough for yoga,’ so we want to find a yoga class where they will see they’re not alone in feeling stiff and achy! Mindfulness classes are a nice way to use active
techniques to stay present and don’t require postures or sitting completely still.”
Many free resources are available online, although Gibney encourages people to choose reputable teachers. “I notice that apps are used more consistently by people who have practiced in a class with a teacher,” she said.
Most yoga and meditation centers, including An Anchored Life, offer new student discounts, special offers, and coupons to make the practice even more accessible. “I offer birthday coupons to encourage clients ‘to come back to themselves’ if they slip out of practice!” Gibney said.
Today, the research on meditation is irrefutable. Invest the time, and you’re sure to reap the rewards. “We know these practices enhance health and well-being,” Gibney said.

CHRIS AND LAUREN RICCI OF NVA CAREER COACHING OFFER ADVICE FOR ALL STAGES OF THE CAREER JOURNEY.
“We win when our clients win,” Chris Ricci said, “and they win when they reach their objective.”
When investing money, most people have clear goals and strategies. But what about the career that generates those investment funds?
Northern Virginia’s father-daughter career coaches, Chris Ricci and Lauren Ricci, emphasize the importance of investing in your “body of work,” a portfolio of skills and experiences that enhance your professional opportunities.
“In terms of investing and building that body of work, it’s a lot like financial investing,” Chris said. “It involves risk and learning new skills and keeping up with trends and which courses to take.”
You can invest in your professional career at any (and all) stages and in any (and all) industries. About 10 percent of the clients the Riccis assist at their NVA Career Coaching business are recent college graduates or early in their careers, while 70 percent are making a career transition. About 20 percent are late in their careers or looking to work at least part-time through retirement. The Riccis estimate that they’ve worked with people in nearly all industries.
“Well, we’ve never had a client who’s a logger,” Chris admitted with a smile.
The Riccis recommend the following five elements of a successful career investment:
1. Career Assessments: Deep evaluations guide clients in identifying strengths, areas for growth, and suitable career paths. Discover which roles best suit you by assessing your skills, personal style, and motivational style. At NVA Career Coaching, the Riccis help you uncover
and then use this information to identify three career roles, then they assist you in branding yourself for those roles.
“The more focused you are, the better,” said Chris, who often sees people sending out countless resumes, to no avail. “You need to know who you are, the value you bring, how you bring that value, and the role you’re looking for.”
Following the assessment, his clients receive comprehensive resources, including an e-book with the assessment results (typically 60-70 slides) and a personal career summary document, which also helps clients prepare for job interviews.
“We work with many clients who are employed but want a change and are not sure where to go or how to do it,” Chris said. “When you have the assessment phase document, it’s a guide for them—they can act on it right away or not. It’s worth it to take a deep dive and look at yourself and make that investment—it’s direction for the future.”
2. Networking & Mentorship: Career advancement depends on cultivating meaningful connections and leveraging personal networks.
Chris calls networking the most underrated form of career investment. “If you’re not going to do anything else, you have to let people know your story,” he said. “It’s just communicating; you’re not asking for a job. I could tell you stories of unbelievable networking and quirky connections that paid off for clients. We help them develop their story, and then they get in the networking pool.”
“In terms of investing and building that body of work, it’s a lot like financial investing. It involves risk and learning new skills and keeping up with trends and which courses to take.” —Chris Ricci
“The more focused you are, the better. You need to know who you are, the value you bring, how you bring that value, and the role you’re looking for.” —Chris Ricci
He described four types of people who should be in your network: a driver, a teacher, a maintenance crew, and a motivator. “We coach people to look for those people in their network and use those people to help you,” Chris said.
“Networking doesn’t have to be people in your field,” Lauren added. “It could be a neighbor you’re talking to who has a connection who can help you.”
Don’t overlook volunteering as a way to both build skills and network, Chris said. “It gives you a chance to practice networking,” he said. “You run across so many people, and you can hone your skills and abilities and get leads on new trends.”
3. Mock Interviews & Coaching: Work with a coach or friend to practice in-depth, role-specific mock interviews to prepare yourself for this essential part of the process. The Riccis work with communication coaches, offering practices and evaluations to perfect client performance.
4. Certifications & Education: Targeted certifications and courses can enhance career prospects and differentiate professionals in the job market.
Continuing education helps to “future proof” your career, Chris said. “No one can predict what’s coming, but future proofing and using certifications can differentiate you from other candidates.”
5. Career Investment Strategies: Budget the time and financial resources you devote to your career search wisely, for the long term.
Chris said it’s essential throughout your career to find time daily to keep your network alive. “You have to find ways to harvest time from your day,” he said. “Just a few messages on LinkedIn or emails or calls. There are ways to harvest time, and it compounds.”
Another investment Chris recommends: LinkedIn. “Get LinkedIn Premium,” he said. “They give you a free month, then it’s $39, and you can see who’s looked at your profile and send them an InMail. When you look at the doors that is going to open, it’s worth it. I see people wring their hands over a small investment, and they ignore the long-term payoff.”
So how long does it take to see a return on your investment if you work with a career coach?
That, Chris said, is everyone’s big question.
“It really depends on the client, how engaged they are,” he said. “There’s no easy answer. Our initial term is 120 days, but we can extend if it takes longer. You typically start seeing some response, whether it’s knowing more about yourself, having a solid resume and LinkedIn profile, or a call for an interview within 30 to 60 days.”
If you’re trying to combine your passion with your career, however, Chris recommends caution. “We don’t believe that if you find something you love you’ll never work a day in your life,” he said. “Save that passion for hobbies. Save it as an energy provider, and focus on another full-time role.”
Another piece of advice: Don’t try to turn your weaknesses into strengths. “You will spend so much time trying to improve small weaknesses, and you will ignore the strengths you have,” he said. “There’s a sledgehammer of pragmatism that we bring and a level set. We want to keep your spirit up, but also, let’s look pragmatically.”
For Chris and Lauren, hearing that they’ve helped a client is their greatest reward. “We win when our clients win,” Chris said, “and they win when they reach their objective.”
If you’re interested in a free, one-hour consultation, Chris and Lauren will share their program, send you a guide, and help you focus your thinking about your career. “Take a risk, which might be just reaching out,” he said.
