Editor’s Letter
Happy fall, all! I
t’s the MOST wonderful time of the year… in my humble opinion. I love it when I get to pull out the sweatshirts and sweaters that have been ignored during the months that are our humid summers. My perfect fall day is when the temperatures are crisp enough to allow me to wear my favorite jeans, but not so cool that I can’t let my toes enjoy the comfort of flip flops. At Lifestyle Publications, we strive to bring you the good news of our community. Our company motto is “Inspired by Community” and we take those words seriously. We are inspired by you, our neighbors. We live and work and dine in this community, too, and it’s a privilege and an honor to bring you this magazine each and every month. We’ve made some subtle but impressive improvements to our website and electronic distribution over the past few months. I know that when you receive a magazine in the mail, especially one that you don’t subscribe to, there may be little motivation to visit the company’s website. But if you know someone who would like to read this little gem each month, please tell them about the free email distribution of the magazine. We are growing our readership and distribution each week thanks to this new offering. And since we’ve been at this for several years now, we have some plans to shake things up a bit in the near future. We hope you’ll notice and enjoy the little changes we’re making to the magazine here and there. One of the new items on our company-wide to-do list is our first-ever Lifestyle Reader’s Choice awards. We plan to give our wonderful readers and advertisers a chance to nominate and vote for some of the best service providers in our community. Please take a moment to log on to LeesSummitLifestyle.com to nominate and then vote for a few of our neighbors. We plan to celebrate the winners in a couple of months. Voting will be open until the end of November and then we’ll tally the votes. Enjoy this perfect weather, neighbors. And I’ll see you around town! A note about the photo: Last fall my dear friend and photographer, Susan Motley, traveled to Grinter Farms at sunrise to snap some amazing photos of their sunflower fields. We waited

LOCAL LEGAL AID UNVEILS NEW VISUAL IDENTITY For the first time in more than 30 years, Legal Aid of Western Missouri has unveiled a new visual identity to increase understanding of the impact the organization makes in their service area. As the only organization in western Missouri that provides free, comprehensive civil legal services to low-income people, Legal Aid has the unique capacity to address many of the challenges facing individuals and families living in poverty today. The new visual identity is the result of more than a year of analysis and research and was developed by Design Ranch, a Kansas City design firm. The new logo's bold, familiar shape draws on the legacy of the old one and symbolizes Legal Aid's commitment to justice for all. Legal Aid of Western Missouri provides free civil legal assistance to people who need it most and can afford it least. With offices in downtown Kansas City, Joplin, St. Joseph, Warrensburg and a neighborhood office on Kansas City’s west side, the organization serves a 40-county area where 288,000 people live in poverty.

ACT SCORES EXCEED STATE AND NATIONAL AVERAGES Lee’s Summit students taking the ACT college-entrance test scored well above state and national averages, according to results recently released from the 2014-15 school year. R-7 students averaged a 23.3 on the composite score, compared to 21.7 for the Missouri average and 21 for the national average. "We were pleased with our students' scores which were well above the state average in all areas tested and at each of our three high schools,” says Dr. David McGehee, R-7 superintendent. “In addition, we had an excellent participation rate at each school with a high percentage of 2015 graduates taking the ACT test.” A total of 986 students took the ACT test during the previous school year. This is 76 percent of the 2015 graduating class of all three high schools combined. Lee's Summit School District students also scored above the state and national averages in all four specific subjects tested – English, mathematics, reading and science.
A HISTORY OF OUR TOWN Are you interested in the history of Lee’s Summit? Who were the early settlers and how did the city begin? Well, your questions can be answered! The Historical Society of Lee’s Summit formed a committee to research and write the History of Lee’s Summit 1865 to 2015. This commemorative book is being released in conjunction with the city’s Sesquicentennial celebration and contains more than 200 pages, over 300 photos, some of which have never been published, and a reference section with more than 300 notes. From a small agricultural community, Lee’s Summit has grown to an award-winning city of more than 94,000 people. This book chronicles the triumphs and difficulties of those who worked to make Lee’s Summit the vibrant, thriving community of today. For further information, contact Bob Boland, rlboland@kc.rr.com.

Vacations Are For Looking Back
ARTICLE JAMES MCKENNA
“W
e travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” ~ Anonymous A study was conducted among 1,500 individuals in order to determine the “happiness staying power” associated with two distinct types of vacations. One group’s vacation was defined as a Rest and Relaxation vacation, while the other group’s vacation was defined as a Discoverer, New Experience vacation. The study found that the sense of happiness associated with Rest and Relaxation vacations, including laying on the beach, reading, and doing little of anything, faded as quickly as their tans. Those individuals who took the Discover New Experience vacations such as; visiting offthe-beaten-path environments rooted in culture, history and heritage reported still being “happy” more than two months after returning home from their vacation. Today more than ever, vacation travelers are trying to maximize their precious leisure time by selecting destinations that provide visitors with a deeper sense of emotional experiences rather than simply providing them with some form of diversion. 20
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | October 2015
It just so happens that Lee’s Summits’ distinctive culture and richly textured traditions provide the ideal backdrop for visitors to glimpse back in time to truly appreciate the fact that their lives are headed in the right direction. As usual the baby boomer generation represents the largest percentage of leisure, as well as business travelers. In fact, fourout-of-five boomers have taken at least one vacation in the past year. They’re also the driving force for multi-generational vacation trips, seeing it as an opportunity to reconnect with their adult children and grandchildren. Rest assured that they’re not going along to baby-sit the grandkids. They’re active and healthy and because they are more financially secure, they wind up paying for the trips. The smart money is on how the boomers will continue to impact the travel industry. That’s right, the very same group who invented the defining generational question, “Are we there yet?” Back then they had little patience for what seemed like long, uninterrupted road trips (no iPhones, Kindles or iPods back in the day).
We measure life one memory at a time and happiness has to do with emotional experiences bringing meaning to life. These experiences are stored away as memories. These memories become our personal keepsakes that will live on within us forever. One invaluable side of all this is that we have instant access to these memories, when our cycle of life becomes too overwhelming and we need a time-out. Lee’s Summit is the kind of place where visitors immediately feel right at home. There is a whole different small town rhythm of life going on here that dramatically changes the way you see your life. When you visit Lee’s Summit, you get the distinct feeling that each and every moment is overflowing with possibilities. This makes it the ideal place for visitors to discover a new-found energy that will defy their traditional vacation expectations, bringing more meaning to their life while allowing them to hold onto the memories they hold dear. James E McKenna is the Community Marketing Director for the City of Lee’s Summit.

t’s Sunday afternoon and the kitchen of Lynn and Tony DiPlacito’s Lakewood home looks like the inside of a brewery. That’s because today it is. Tony is brewing his latest beer from an original recipe. “I’m using pale malt, wheat malt and rye malt to create what I call my lawnmower beer,” says Tony. On the stovetop is a seven-gallon stew pot, full of water. He heats it to 164 degrees, and then with the help of sonin-law Ryan Hamann, pours it into a 10-gallon beverage container. “This is my mash tun,” explains Tony. He made it himself by adding a screen bottom for filtering the wort from

the grain. Once the pot is full of hot water, the two men add the pre-measured grains and stir. “I’ve learned that adding a handful or so of rice hulls helps keep the wheat grains separated and make the process run smoother.” After mixing, they cover the container and let it set for 60 minutes, while nutrients are sucked out of the grains. After an hour, they siphon the liquid into the boil kettle and test for sugar content in the wort. “Lee’s Summit has excellent brewing water! The pH is a perfect,” says Tony. “All I have to do is add a tablet to remove chlorine.”
Tony has long enjoyed craft beer, especially Kansas City’s locals like Boulevard and Cinder Block. Then about five years ago, Lynn bought Tony a beer-making kit as a Christmas gift. “I thought it made terrible beer,” says Tony. Although friends and neighbors said they liked that first batch, the couple knew they needed to step it up. The following summer Lynn found some beer-making items at garage sales, including a pale ale. “I like gadgets!” says Tony, and those simple finds were all it took to get him to try again. With the new equipment and multigrains on hand, Tony made his first real batch. “It turned out incredible!” Soon after he joined a few beer clubs and began entering in competitions. He won third place in Best of Show with the ZZHops Club and earned 42 out of 50 points at a California show. He also began frequenting local brew supply stores such as Lee’s Summit’s Grains and Taps and Apex Brew Wares. Following a recent competition, Cinder Block Brewery in North Kansas City approached him even though his entry did not place. “They said they really enjoyed its drinkability. Cinder Block wanted to make my beer and serve it on tap.” Their recipe had to be scaled up from five gallons to 15 barrels to run on Cinder Block’s system. The beer was released at a party just prior to Labor Day. “This was quite an honor,” says Tony. Two weeks later, he was one of 40 brewers who participated in Brewtopia
Kansas City, a homebrew and craft beer festival. What’s next? The energetic couple is in the process of renovating their basement to include a bar, a walk-in wine cooler and a room for beer making. Already on hand is a customized refrigerator Tony found free on Craig’s List. It holds his kegs, where he runs CO2 into the living ale for carbonation. He removed some shelves from a discarded upright freezer, installed a temperature control device and now uses the unit to keep his beer at a constant 66 degrees during the fermentation process. He plans to install a 220 volt outlet which would allow him to move the cooking process downstairs. “Right now this is the big brew kitchen!” says Lynn, gesturing to the home’s kitchen. “I like a brew day because Tony has to sanitize everything!” On this particular Sunday, it appeared that his project may edge out any dinner plans. “Not a problem. He is smoking a pork shoulder on the back patio!”

W
hen Blake Burau returned to Lee’s Summit West (LSW) High School last year as a senior, it was only one short month after losing his mother, Rhonda Vansickle, to cancer. The youngest of Rhonda’s three boys, he was the last son remaining at home. As Rhonda’s fiancé, Roger Wendel, Jr., recalls, “I was an urban core fireman in KCMO for 26 years, and the hardest thing I ever had to do was not fighting the house fires, or cutting people out of cars on I-70, but walking down those seven steps to the basement (where the boys were playing video games) to tell these three amazing kids that their mother had Stage IV breast cancer and the outlook was grim, since she could not bring herself to do it. After that night, we lived every day to the max for the next three years, so we all have no regrets. Still, with the passing of his mom came moving, selling the house, visits to the Social Security Office, etc. All of this while Blake was trying to concentrate on school. It was extremely hard.” Blake was a stand-out football player but only a fair student, and given all the stress he’d been experiencing, his studies proved even more challenging. That’s where our neighbors at Club Z! In Home Tutoring stepped in—and made all the difference. Now celebrating its 10th year serving our community, Club Z! has a long history of giving back to the Lee’s Summit School District. The company has regularly given a five percent discount to

all Kids Country Families, been a District Business Partner, offered and taught Study Skills lessons in the elementary schools, and designed and implemented programs and services such as Study Skills, Math Prep, ACT Prep, and its “Connect” program. Through the Connect program, each semester, an elementary school is chosen to receive a 20-hour package of tutoring delivered in a student’s home. “To date, we’ve given 160 hours of tutoring to the elementary schools,” says Jayme Richardson, Club Z! owner and area director. “We have the Connect Program implemented in all three high schools, as well. We offer an ACT Prep Scholarship wherein one student from each high school is selected to receive our 16-hour ACT Prep program. The Lee’s Summit West Booster Club sponsors an additional ACT Scholarship to be awarded to a LSW student. To date, we’ve awarded seven ACT scholarships and empowered seven students to go to college and follow their dreams.” Blake, blessedly, received Club Z!’s ACT and Math Prep Scholarships. “Even though Blake was a senior, he’d not yet taken the ACT as it was not a top priority with his mother being so sick,” says Richardson. “Blake buckled down and completed our 16-hour ACT Prep. This coupled with one-on-one math support twice a week for the school year was a winning combination for Blake. He not only finished the year with a B in Algebra 2, but he’s now able to go to Missouri Western and play football with his brother.” “Everyone at Club Z! encouraged Blake to stay with the program, kept him positive and were extremely patient with him—especially the math tutor,” says Roger. “They were tremendous! Blake ended up passing the ACT by one question on his second try and is eligible by the NCAA to play football this year. We can’t thank the good folks at Club Z! enough. Today, Blake is practicing with the Missouri Western Griffon Football Team, has just started his college classes, and is on the same football team as his older brother, LSW’s All State Tight End Austin Burau. Thanks to Club Z!, the two brothers are together again—as it should be!” For more information on Club Z! In Home Tutoring, visit ClubZTutoring.com.

SUMMIT SPIRIT WEDDING’S NEAR-DISASTER GIVES RISE TO PROMINENT LEE’S SUMMIT CATERING FIRM ARTICLE CHRISTOPHER CLARK | PHOTOGRAPHY NICK ALLEN AND KENDRA MATHEWSON

ot many companies are born of crisis. But this was a clear emergency, and in a way, the fretting bride-to-be on the other end of the line could be credited with kick starting one of Lee’s Summit’s best-known catering brands. It was September 2008 when the woman found Jane Monroe answering the phone at the Gomer's liquor store on Missouri 291. She explained that during the wedding planning process, she booked a venue requiring a liquor-licensed caterer to handle alcohol. “That meant she could not buy her alcohol from Gomer's and hire a bartender,” recalls Monroe, who now runs the Lee’s Summit-based beverage catering business, Embrace the Grape. “She had to use a company with a by-the-drink license, not a retail license. She did some pricing of the options out there and was shocked at the cost. She called me at Gomer's nearly in tears and asked if there was anything we could do to help. “Her wedding was in May of 2009. I consulted with my business partner and we decided it was time to launch a beverage catering company which would be more budget-friendly than the options available, without sacrificing service. We catered the bar for her wedding eight months later and have been growing ever since.” When Monroe explains her business to others, she tells them to think of a food caterer. “Now apply the same concept but substitute liquid for food. We consult with the client, discuss budget and menu, do tastings if necessary, invent signature drinks specific to the couple, bring all beverages and supplies with us, set up, serve and clean up at the end. We cater the bar!” Embrace the Grape is licensed in both Kansas and Missouri, which allows Monroe to work anywhere in the metro, and beyond. This summer, she’s taken the business to Lawrence, Lone Jack, Platte City, past Concordia and many points in between. Much of the work comes from weddings, but the business also caters to fundraisers, corporate gatherings, festivals and other events. Gomer's and Embrace the Grape were once connected as businesses. Gomers opened in Lee's Summit in August 2005. The next year, Monroe became a partner in the company. Three years later, the company spun off Embrace the Grape. Then in 2011, Monroe split the company with her partner. He took over Gomer's, and Monroe took the beverage catering business. “Gomer's was my start in the liquor business and I learned most of what I know about the industry from the other Gomer's owners throughout the city,” Monroe says. “Those gentlemen were very good to me and without their mentorship, I wouldn't have succeeded. Even though there is no longer an affiliation with the Gomer's name, I still contact the owners outside Lee's Summit when I have an industry question.” Inside Lee’s Summit, Monroe has raised both a thriving business and family. Married to husband Russ for 24 years, the couple has four children and is involved in the community through the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Lakeland Community Church. “When I went away to college, I realized just how good our education is here,” says Monroe. “I was much better prepared than most of my college classmates. I knew by the end of my first semester of college that I'd raise my family in Lee's Summit. I can't imagine life any other way, living and working in a Lee's Summit lifestyle.”

Many people look forward to fall after a long summer and the idea of snuggling up in sweaters is welcoming. Faulkner's Ranch is a place that comes alive in the fall with beautiful rolling hills, yard games, a pumpkin patch, pony rides and more. Gooey s'mores made with chocolate chip cookies are a treat that always reminds me of fall campfires. This Missouri ranch hosted our fall festival photo shoot complete with amazing Missouri-based artisans who have taken the idea of handcrafted to a new level. Hand-poured candles from McCalls Candles scented the air, while Top Shelf Bartending served libations from Ozark Distillery and 360 Vodka. A hand-crafted fall wreath by Little Lady Crafts welcomed us and added the perfect touch of color and whimsy to the front door. Custom embroidered napkins from The Gartermaker by Monde Design added some stitched fall flare to our table setting. Breast cancer takes women on unique journeys. A few friends share insights from theirs. ARTICLE KENDRA MATHEWSON | PHOTOGRAPHY AMANDA JONES/FREELAND PHOTOGRAPHY

t is one of life’s mysteries we all grapple with at one time or another – why do bad things happen? Somehow in our human experiences, being able to draw meaning from the valleys in life help us cope. Being able to help others seems to impart purpose where there can seem none. And sharing the journey with others, either as we go through or reflect, or even hearing someone else’s story, can also inspire. The silver lining, finding the good in the bad, overcoming evil… these are all elements of an epic tale. A few of our beautiful neighbors who have experienced breast cancer share the light they’ve been able to find in their own dark times, and words that inspired them on their journeys.

LAURIE WILBURN DIAGNOSIS: Ductal Carcinoma
In Situ, 2012 WORK: Part time director of operations
for a small consulting firm and owner/ managing director of synaxisHR, a human resource consulting firm FAMILY: Husband Dan; Children Meah (14), Hudson (12) Many subtle things changed for me during my breast cancer journey, and one in particular resonates: feeling more connected with my body. I hesitated to share this one thing because it is deeply personal and could be misunderstood. There were two drivers for this change: (1) It took at least a year after radiation treatment for me to feel myself again physically so during that time I was more acutely aware of how my body felt. I found myself saying, “Why did I just eat that? I don’t feel good when I eat that.” (2) I was rather shocked at how emotionally jarring it was to have a piece of my body cut out, to have a significant scar. My experience with breast cancer helped me to acknowledge that my body is an integral part of my identity. How I feel about (and in) my body affects how I feel about me – just as my emotional, spiritual and mental health do. It’s a bit of an odd place to be in our world where eating disorders are common and fitness can be an obsession. I don’t want to obsess on body image, and I don’t believe my physical body is the most important among our mind, heart, soul and body. I’m a firm believer in “it’s what’s inside that counts,” but that doesn’t negate the fact that my physical body is part of who I am and because of this experience I have a new resolve to treat it as such. The word that inspired me is TRUST. I think what kept me going (in addition to the amazing family and friends who surrounded me and my family with love and support) was my belief that nothing is unredeemable. Whatever happened, God could work in and through it. I trusted (and still trust) in God’s ability CONTINUED > to work in that way. October 2015 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

LIFE LESSONS (CONTINUED) MICHELE HARMAN DIAGNOSIS: Invasive Ductal Carcinoma
In Situ, 2012 WORK: Mortgage Loan Originator FAMILY: Husband James Harman; Children-Tanner (16); Carter (14), Kaisee (7) I have been very blessed throughout my life and didn’t face adversity until cancer. Prior to cancer, I often thought, why has my life been so easy? What have I done to deserve such a good life with a loving family and healthy kids? When I found out I had cancer, it felt like my world fell apart. My lump was 1 cm, stage 1 with vascular and lymphatic invasion, which led to four rounds of chemo and 33 radiation treatments, and lots of follow up visits. My cancer was strongly ER/PR positive which means the estrogen and progesterone in my body fed the cancer and made it grow. I completed genetic testing and I was negative for both the BRACA and BART gene. There is really no answer as to why I developed cancer. I try to look at it as a special experience I was given and, believe it or not, it is one I am thankful for, as I have learned so much. The journey taught me about who I was, my faith, my inner strength, and the fight I had to make it. The amount of support I had is unbelievable. I received phone calls and letters from friends of friends that I had never met telling me they were survivors. Cancer is a terrible disease but it brings people who don’t even know each other together! Family and friends rallied around me and supported our family in amazing ways. I hope to be as good to others as they have been to me. I’m thankful everyday for my journey. It has enabled me to refocus on myself and all that life has to offer. I found strength that I never knew I had. I think my kids have been taught what it means to face adversity and come out stronger on the other side. I can honestly look back on the last few years of my life and be happy about where I am. While I dreaded the thought of losing my hair and cried enough to fill a swimming pool, I like my new fun sassy short hair! Going through breast cancer made me look at life and reevaluate what is important. The two words that inspired me are FAITH and COURAGE. 46

LINDA HIGHT DIAGNOSIS: Invasive Ductal
Carcinoma, 2002 WORK: Administrative Director for
Living Foundation Ministries FAMILY: Husband Jim; Adult Children-Jim (and wife, Stephanie) and Sarah (and husband Ryan Lefebvre); 6 grandkids I’ve learned to slow down, not take life so seriously. I was living in the fast lane and that lifestyle was not serving me well. I didn’t even realize how much stress it created. I now set healthy boundaries for myself. I’ve learned how to say “no” to things and people that are not life giving to me. I was a doer and a giver… always trying to please. My breast cancer experience taught me that allowing others to serve and help me brought joy to them. I was not accustomed to asking anyone for help and was uncomfortable when my friends and neighbors rallied around me. It was humbling and beautiful. I learned through them to become a gracious receiver. I learned that I cannot control everything in my world, although I tried to and was pretty good at it. I’ve come to realize that all I am responsible to control is my response to whatever happens to me. That realization has brought much joy and freedom in my relationships and daily life. Everything and everyone else is in the control of my Creator. Faith has played a significant role in my life. The big “WHY” question was my constant companion in the beginning of my cancer journey. Many days I felt like God was far away and didn’t care what I was going through. I knew that was not true, but the truth conflicted with my feelings. My faith was tested as I wrestled with what I really believed. I made a decision to live in and act on what I knew to be true instead of how I felt most days. Thirteen years later I still rely on that principle. My feelings betray me sometimes and my faith has been stretched to believe what I can’t always feel, what I can’t always see …that everything that happens to me will produce something good for me. I call that HOPE, the word that inspired me. CONTINUED >

JO NELSON DIAGNOSIS: Invasive Ductal
Carcinoma, 2014 WORK: Registered Nurse, Certified
School Nurse, Recently Retired FAMILY: Husband Darryl; Daughters Jenny (& husband Zach Johnson) and Emily. 1 grandson. My breast cancer journey has been happening over the past year. My tumor was about 7 mm when I found it and was estrogen positive. I had bilateral complete mastectomy with lymph node dissections, reconstruction, and a total hysterectomy. This past year I have learned to not take anything for granted. Cultivate deep relationships. Call, text, send a card, visit… friends, family. Hug a lot. Smile even more! Notice the beauty in everything around you: flowers, sunshine, rain drops, sunsets, faces, smiles, giggles. Live! Two words that inspired me are FAITH and FAMILY. I’m blessed with a wonderful, loving and supportive family that has been with me every step of the way. My friends have also been there to support and care for me. And my God was with me every day and he has been ahead of me through this journey. Without his love I would not be where I am today. In a way, this experience has been a blessing! To learn to slow down and appreciate what I have been given. To care more about others. To be more loving and kind. To cling to my creator for hope and peace. And to stay positive, even in a bleak situation. I do not know what the future holds so for me, but I do know that God my family and my friends will be there!

TRISH FREVERT DIAGNOSIS: Lobular Carcinoma, 2009 WORK: Minister to Preschoolers at First Baptist Church Lee’s Summit FAMILY: Husband Larry; Children-Wesley (& wife Ashley), Tommy (& wife Lindsey), Warren (23) and Lilly (16); 4 grandkids Something I learned from the experience of breast cancer was that I didn’t and I don’t have to go through challenging times alone. God was and is still here for me. He surrounded me with an awesome family and wonderful friends. I learned it is "ok" to accept help from others. I’ve always been one to help others; in fact, I love to help others but not so good at accepting or asking for help from others. One word that inspired me through my journey would be LOVE. I was surrounded by the love of God, my family and friends.
Our heartfelt thanks to the team at Freeland Photography for their dedication to this special project to honor National Breast Cancer Awareness month.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ANNE POTTER RUSS
Autumn is here, and we’re all gearing up for some comfort food, entertaining friends and family during the holidays, watching football, and complementing our meals with great wine and beer. Often confused by the plethora of choices when perusing the liquor aisles of the store? Tend to judge a bottle by its label when choosing something to drink? No more! We consulted our friends at Gomer’s, and we’ve got some great ideas for your dining and hospitality needs. CONTINUED >

The Bottom Line on Wine Wine aficionado Michael Querrey of Lenexa answered our queries regarding what’s great for fall recipes and curious palates. Each of these delicious choices weighs in under $20 per bottle, so dressing your table is affordable. Here are his picks in order of increasing body (whites to reds). • VIGNETI DEL VULTURE’S PIPOLI GRECO-FIANO BASILICATA. From the deep south of Italy, this is fruity, floral, and full-bodied. Great with chicken or pork. • NINE HATS’ COLUMBIA VALLEY RIESLING (2013). This Washington State wine is sweet, crisp, great with salmon, or for Thanksgiving. Open an hour ahead. • TABLAS CREEK VINEYARD’S PATELIN DE TABLAS BLANC (2013). Paso Robles in California has produced this full-bodied, honeydew tasting white. Great paired with flavorful food. • DOMAINE DE PALLUS CHINON MESSANGES’ ROSÉ CABERNET FRANC (2014). Hailing from the Loire Valley of France, this rosé will surprise you!
Not sweet, but full of flavor, pairs well with burgers or heavy vegetables (think Portabello). • LES LAUZERAIES’ TAVEL ROSÉ (2013). This is Michael’s top pick to please a crowd at Thanksgiving. Beautiful deep rosé color with flavors that are flinty, delicate and fruity, but not overly sweet. • COOPER MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS’ PINOT NOIR (2012). Produced near Portland, Oregon, this wine is certified organic. The tastes of Bing cherries and spice go well with pork. • STEFANO FARINA’S LE BRUME LANGHE ROSSO (2008). From northwest Italy, this blend is silky, deep, dark, and earthy. Good with red meats and pastas. • DOMAINE PIERRE-HENRI MOREL’S SIGNARGUES COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES (2012). Rhone, France brings us a Grenache that is inky, full of body
and great with a stew or heavy soup. • TIKAL’S PATRIOTA (2012). This Argentinian wine is 60 percent Malbec and great with, of course, Argentinian beef. It is full of taste and fairly tanic. • HEDGES FAMILY ESTATE’S C.M.S. COLUMBIA VALLEY (2012). This blend of (CMS) Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah from Washington State is lovely, deep, dark, full-bodied wine with cherry, chocolate and oak tastes. It is great served with a steak or lamb. 56

PICKS IN BEER MADE CRYSTAL CLEAR In the world of beer, ale and cider, Katt Beckwith is our expert at Gomer’s in Lenexa. Her top picks are definitely reminiscent of fall, Halloween, pumpkins and tailgating! • ACE PUMPKIN CIDER – from California and happens to also be gluten-free. • WOODCHUCK HARD CIDER – from Vermont has lots of flavor options, including Pear and Granny Smith. • PAULANER SALVATOR – this Bavarian brew is malty and traditional. • YETI IMPERIAL STOUT – by Great Divide Brewing in Denver, big malty roasted flavor. • BOULEVARD’S BOB’S 47 OKTOBERFEST – a local favorite, Boulevard brings out this seasonal treat in the fall – medium bodied dark amber lager. • LINDEMAN’S CASSIS LAMBIC AND FRAMBOISE LAMBIC – these Belgian beers have been flavored with fruit – a unique and historical approach to brewing. • AYINGER’S OKTOBER FEST-MARZEN – Bavarian, slightly sweet, malty, great with brats and pretzels. • O’FALLON’S PUMPKIN BEER AND SCHLAFLY’S PUMPKIN ALE – paying homage to our neighbors in St. Louis, both of these seasonals are refreshing and crisp. • MAGIC HAT’S PUMPKIN ALE – claims the tagline, “The Call For Fall.” From Vermont and looks very fun! • EVIL TWIN BREWING’S EVEN MORE JESUS AND DOUBLE BARREL JESUS – from Brooklyn, they had us at their names. These two imperi-
al stouts are only a fraction of the clever and tasteful offerings. We make no religious claims here, but Katt really likes these. Grab your friends, pick your favorite snacks, marinate the meats, fire up the barbecue, and enjoy these incredibly diverse beverage choices available right here in our city. Gomer’s experts are ready and willing to consult with you on your own tastes and entertaining needs. For more information, visit: GomersOfKansas.com or Gomers.com for those shopping in Missouri.

German Pot Roast with handmade rolls
hen it comes to German cuisine, I have to be honest that I’m not an expert. When I think German, I think sauerkraut, and that is something I try to avoid at all costs. My time at Dietrich’s Modern Cuisine and Biergarten just changed all that. Using a delightful combination of rather robust flavors, Dietrich’s has managed to create a unique ensemble of menu items unlike any in the Lee’s Summit dining experience. My most recent visit even involved a sauerkraut dish that made me rethink every pre-judgment I’ve ever made in life. Although I can’t judge its “authenticity,” I can say that Dietrich’s provides a unique dining experience that almost anyone can enjoy. CONTINUED >

Dietrich’s has been in Lee’s Summit for about one year. It is locally owned and operated by the Schulenberg family who’s son, Craig, serves as head chef. They have modernized old family recipes with an “international flair” to appeal to a variety of guests. In my opinion, it’s working. The environment is charming. An OldWorld style hearth rises from the center of the room decorated with bold colors and lovely stone work. There is a sort of elegance combined with a ruggedness that one might expect from an old European tavern. It provides a cultural experience without becoming a tacky caricature of itself. Since I was new to German cuisine, my wife and I decided to start with the appetizer sampler ($10) which included bacon wrapped brats, kraut balls, chicken lollies, and bier battered mushrooms. To my great surprise, the creamy kraut balls were my favorite followed closely by the bacon wrapped brats seared in a delightful brown sugar glaze. We enjoyed the first round of appetizers so much that we opted for a second round by ordering made from scratch pretzels ($5) in a wonderfully bold bier cheese dipping sauce.
Appetizer Sampler Plate
Spaetzle
For my main course I ordered the recommended German pot roast ($13) while my wife ordered the traditional schnitzel ($10). The pot roast was delicate and juicy with a surprisingly sweet flavor. The schnitzel came as a choice of veal or pork, pounded flat, and bier battered with a golden brown crust topped with mushroom “Jaeger” gravy. The German people are masters of bier batter! The schnitzel literally melted in my mouth. Yes, my wife ordered the schnitzel, but I couldn’t resist a little thievery. With every entrée, one has the option of ordering one or two side dishes ranging from sweet red cabbage to German mashed potatoes to traditional “must haves” like spaetzle. If you have never had spaetzle you are missing out on a unique dumpling made from scratch using dough that is seasoned and pressed through a colander before being gently sautéed in butter, herbs, and spices. Dietrich’s spaetzle had a welcomed zesty citrus bite that did not overpower the freshness of the dough. It was simply delightful. Of course no German restaurant would be complete without one of that nation’s most notable exports… beer. Dietrich’s did not disappoint with its respectable array of reasonably priced German imports crafted in some of Germany’s oldest breweries. With half priced bier and appetizers during happy hour, (Mon-Thurs 3-6 p.m.) Dietrich’s is a great location for classy after work get-togethers. They have a separate dining room located near the Biergarten perfect for gatherings of up to 50 people. Octoberfest is upon us and it is the perfect time to give Dietrich’s a try. Their robust flavors and skillfully crafted biers are sure to delight during this season so rich in tradition. With outstanding service and genuine care, Dietrich’s provides Lee’s Summit with a uniquely European experience that is sure to make you raise your glass and say, “Prost!” That’s German for “Cheers!”

Lee's Summit High Schools Announce 2015-16 Theatre Schedules
A
ll three Lee's Summit high schools are planning for an exciting theatre season with productions beginning this fall and running through next spring.
LEE'S SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL
LSHS will kick off its theatre season at sea with Boubill & Schonberg’s The Pirate Queen, running Nov. 13-14 and 20-22. From the collaborators that brought you Les Miserables, and Riverdance comes a tale based on the 16th century Irish chieftain and pirate Grainne O’Malley, one of the last Irish clan leaders to resist the English conquest of Gaelic Ireland. With battle at sea, beautiful music and a gripping story, you don’t want to miss this musical. LSHS will continue the season with a modern comedy to be announced this fall. Don’t miss what will be a funny show, scheduled for Feb. 19-20 and 26-28. Student-directed one-act plays will be presented April 8-9. These shows are selected by upperclass students who then direct the underclassmen in fun and exciting short shows. To close out the season from April 22-24, the Repertory Theatre production will be staging a play that they will be selecting in their class. Tickets for all LSHS shows are available at LSHSTheatre.com or 816.986.2059. LEE'S SUMMIT NORTH HIGH SCHOOL
LSNHS leads off with its children’s musical Aladdin Jr., including favorite characters from the hit Disney film. A musical adventure filled with magic, mayhem and flying carpet rides, this show is part romance, part action adventure and all fun for everyone. (Rated – G) Performances are at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Oct. 17 and 2 p.m. Oct. 18. North's season continues with another classic musical, Chicago. With music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, this song and dance spectacular is set in Prohibition-era Chicago. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice 62
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | October 2015
and the concept of the "celebrity criminal” and “all that jazz.” (Rated PG13). The show runs at 7 p.m. Nov 13, 14, 20 and 21 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 15. LSNHS will conclude its season with a dramatization based on George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, produced by the Repertory Theatre Group. (Rated – PG) This play will be offered at 7 p.m. April 8 and 9 and at 2 p.m. April 10. For tickets and information, visit LSNTheatre.net or call 816.986.3031. LEE'S SUMMIT WEST HIGH SCHOOL
LSWHS’s season includes the high-flying musical, Pippin, which tells the story of Prince Pippin who wants more than anything to find out who he truly is. Pippin runs at 7 p.m. Nov. 7, 12 and 14 at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 and 15. West's main-stage season will conclude with two plays in February. The first is the hilarious comedy, Noises Off. What happens when a group of actors decide they no longer care about the play and can’t stand each other? Take a true look of what happens on and off stage in this hilarious, madcap comedy that runs at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 and 6 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 7. The second production is the thought-provoking A Brave New World. This production, based on the novel, will be produced in conjunction with the Lee’s Summit West English Language Arts Department and runs at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 and 20 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 21. In addition, LSWHS will present a children’s show on Oct. 10 and 11, A Christmas Carol, Dec. 11 - 13, a Revue on Feb. 12 and 13, a series of student-directed one-act plays at 7 p.m. April 1 and 2 and a repertory theatre murder mystery dinner theatre on April 22 and 23. Information about all LSWHS productions is available at WestSideStage.com. Tickets for all plays are $6 in advance and $7 at the door. Musical tickets are $8 in advance and $9 at the door. All three high schools will also present yet-to-be-announced productions at the school district's One-Act Play Festival to be performed at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 and 5 at LSHS.

Smartphone Sommelier OVERWHELMING BEER AND WINE OPTIONS MEET THEIR MATCH IN SOPHISTICATED APPS ARTICLE CHRISTOPHER CLARK
C
hances are that no matter where you live in the city, you’re never too far from a cavernous liquor shop. You know these booze behemoths, where aisles of bottles extend like row crops stacked tall with microbrewed beers, endless wine varietals and all manner of spirits. Choice is a great thing, until a quick run for tonight’s party becomes a befuddling chore. But you have a smartphone. And you know what comes next: There’s an app for that. Both the iOS and Android app ecosystems are overflowing with ways to tame the tumult of tippling. Sophisticated databases, search algorithms and even your own photos catalog the latest beers and wines, and what your imbibing friends are saying about them. Many apps feature wonderful photo capabilities that allow you to snap a picture and instantly see user reviews that can remove the risk of buying that beer you’ve never heard of. Or that beguilingly-labeled wine that was all design and not worth your two bucks, Chuck. Because wine before beer, never fear, let’s first take a look at some apps to score that perfect vino. Drync is one of the wine app genre’s most elegant entries. Use your phone’s camera to scan a label to get information, community ratings or add the picture to your wine wish list. You can also buy wine directly through the app and have it shipped to your home. As you build out your collection, Drync handily catalogs your titles, tasting notes, cost, and any information you might need should you want to buy again. Vivino shares many of Drync’s capabilities but throws in a robust system for managing information about favorite wines. Think of it as a cloud-based cellar where the name, variety and tasting notes are waiting for you. It also has a recommendation feature that intuits your preferences and suggests wines to match. 66
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | October 2015
WineGlass doesn’t solve a party problem as much as it handles something many of us can relate to: a restaurant wine menu that might as well be in Greek. That red may have smoky notes, but will it pair with what you’re hungry for? WineGlass tries to cut the guesswork by allowing you to take a picture of the menu and turning that list into interactive information about the wines, what others think and how they pair. Now that you’re a smartphone sommelier, let’s turn you into a beer snob. Suds meet social in an app called Untappd. The app connects with your friends to find what’s good and new. Ratings, a wish-list function and the app’s gorgeous design score high with users. Picky Pint borrows a page from the wine apps by letting you take a photo of a beer menu, or labels at the store, to unleash a torrent of information about ratings, recommendations and tasting notes. Even the beer’s bitterness is scored so you know what you’re getting into. If you’re ready to overthink the way you buy beer, give Picky Pint a look. Another app that can tell you everything about that obscure microbrew you’re about to buy is Beer Buddy. It’s arguably the most information-packed app, with a deep beer catalog that hooks into the well-regarded review site RateBeer.com. Scan barcodes for more information, bookmark favorite brews and rate your buys. Now, here’s one more that’s neither wine nor beer. Highball (iOS only) is a brilliantly designed app that allows you to collect cocktail recipes and share them with friends. The app organizes recipes as cards, allowing you to collect others’ recipes and create your own. The app is delightfully designed and dead-simple to use. Some starter recipes offer a feel for how the cards are laid out, and it won’t be long before you’re creating personalized cards with your own twists on popular cocktails.

Audi Q5 Diesel has Fuel
Economy and Performance ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
C
lean diesel power appeals to drivers on two levels: performance and fuel economy. Audi’s midsize utility vehicle, the Q5, is available with five powertrains, ranging from a 2.0-liter turbo to the supercharged V-6 in the sporty SQ5, but the one that catches my eye is the 3.0-liter turbo diesel V-6. Sure, the 354 horsepower in the SQ5 has addictive acceleration, yet the TDI clean diesel engine delivers more torque than any engine in the lineup. Torque is the force that pushes you back when you mash the throttle, and the diesel steps away from a stop with a satisfying lunge. The TDI scoots to 60 miles per hour only 1.4 seconds slower than the hot SQ5, but its value is the fact that it has a highway mileage rating of 31 miles per gallon versus 24 for the SQ5. I submit that most of us would trade mileage for a fractionally slower acceleration. Diesels used to be loud and smelly, but the current crop of clean diesels is neither. In fact, if you didn’t know this was a diesel you couldn’t tell by listening. The Q5 TDI has a base price of $47,000. That’s at least $4,000 less than the SQ5. The Q5 is an ideal size if you don’t need three-row seating. It slips through urban
72
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | October 2015
traffic as easily as a midsize sedan, yet you sit higher and have a better view of the road. The diesel is backed by an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that can be shifted manually with steering-wheel paddles. A quick burst of power only takes a flip of the paddle shifter. After a few seconds, the transmission reverts to automatic mode. Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system divides power from side to side and front to back as conditions require. That means the wheels with the most grip get the most power. That’s handy on slippery surfaces, of course, but also on dry pavement when driving briskly. The test car’s 20-inch wheels and summer tires would not do well in ice and snow, so winter tires are probably in order. In spite of its taller ride height, the TDI handles more like a sedan than a utility vehicle. The ride is firm, and the brakes are strong and powerful. The blind-spot warning system has yellow lights in the side of the outside mirrors. The Q5’s interior is well designed and executed. The combination of brushed aluminum, soft-touch surfaces and optional piano black trim is inviting. The sculpted front sport seats were supportive and comfortable. Wind and road
noise was not intrusive at highway speeds, and the optional Bang & Olufsen audio system with 14 speakers has excellent sound. PRICE: The base price of the test car was $47,000. Options included the prestige package of blind-spot warning system, Bang & Olufsen sound system, navigation, rear view camera and Audi connect. The exclusive package includes Nappa leather and piano black inlays. Sport front seats, 20-inch wheels and summer tires round out the pricing. The sticker price was $62,025. WARRANTY: Four years or 50,000 miles. The first scheduled maintenance, at 5,000 miles or 12 months, is free. 2015 AUDI Q5 TDI

Parting Thoughts
When Fetching Beer
Gets Complicated WORDS DENISE SNODELL
I
have a beer problem. Wait. That doesn’t sound right. I don’t even drink this popular beverage—never acquired a taste—but I am indeed going through a beer-related crisis. It all started at a fundraising event, too many months ago. An item at the silent auction table caught my husband’s eye—a gift certificate for his favorite local brewery. It offered the ultimate temptation: “A Special Four-Case Selection of Fine Beers.” Faster than you can say “beer me,” he pulled out his mighty pen. A quiet sword fight with other auction attendees ensued. But this was the good stuff. My husband “won.” I would have been thrilled if he had bid on four cases of wine, but no, we were suddenly the proud owners of a lot of beer. Almost 99 bottles, like the song. There was a complication, though. It turned out we wouldn’t be hearing the clinking of way too many amber vessels when we hit potholes on the drive home. Once we were handed the victory certificate, we learned the beer had to be picked up at another time and place. Such sobering fine print.
82
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | October 2015
We were instructed to claim our prize at the brewery’s warehouse, which was an unfamiliar address somewhere around or past downtown. Not only that, we had to follow a strict beer-claiming procedure. So much effort. An email form had to be filled out. The certificate number was some kind of critical big deal. Once the paperwork was complete, the instructions informed us, we would have to wait until a company representative contacted us to set up a time to get the liquid loot. Can you imagine? Paperwork and appointments and wacky GPS coordinates for what…beer? The worst part—we’d have to choose from very limited windows of pickup times, all during inconvenient office hours. My schedule is more flexible than my husband’s, so I stupidly volunteered to chair the beer retrieval committee. What a mistake. I’ve had no incentive to drive an hour round trip to an industrial booze district. As of press time, I have not hopped to the task, so to speak. And it’s been getting weird around my household. The tension has escalated because my husband has stopped buying the occasional six-pack. It seems he
doesn’t want to have even a small supply at home when the motherlode is apparently coming. He’s been wrongly assuming I’d burst ahead through the flaming hoops and take the journey “any day now.” For months, the guy has been living beerless-ly. When things were normal, he would always enjoy holding a chilled brewski while grilling on the deck. He’d flip a burger, gaze out to the yard, and sip his beloved beverage. Yet now he can’t. Or rather, won’t. So lately, when my husband grills, he digs into the wine stash. Namely, my refreshing, crisp Riesling. He’s never been a Riesling drinker, ever, and I’m irritated. I tell myself he’s subconsciously seeking something fermented, chilled and Octoberfest-y. This is the best my guy can do to cope with our ironic beer void. But then again, hmm, he might have uncorked some kind of clever motivational trick: The Great Riesling Siphon. It’s working. I’m going to do everything it takes to claim his 96 bottles the moment I finish this column. What a crafty scheme.
