For those who don't know me (yet), my name is Atira Rodriguez and I'm originally from New Jersey. Eight years ago, I unexpectedly fell in love with Long Beach – so much so that I moved across the country a year later to make it my permanent home! Some of my most important life events took place here, including saying "I do" to my husband Rene in Naples in 2020 and welcoming our beautiful son Elijah into the world at Long Beach Memorial the following year.
Working in local media for the past seven years, I have become smitten with the LBC over and over again through the lenses of some of our city's most talented storytellers. As the publisher of this magazine, I now have the honor of introducing a fresh perspective to our community through thoughtfully curated content that shines a spotlight on the very best Long Beach has to offer.
Many of my local favorites are sprinkled throughout this issue, including my top picks for ways to celebrate love this Valentine's Day. The iconic Fairmont Breakers Long Beach has emerged from an extensive multimillion-dollar renovation, standing proudly as the city's only five-star hotel. Juan Huizar shares how childhood lessons in work ethic shaped his journey from humble beginnings to financial independence.
Juan Huizar has risen each morning before the sun for as long as he can remember.
At 9 years old, he worked predawn hours alongside his mother and siblings in the garlic fields of Lemoore, California, where they earned money based on the number of five-gallon buckets of garlic they picked.
“The harder you work, the greater the reward,” he said. At the same age, Huizar took on a newspaper route, where he was paid in pizza for expanding deliveries — reaping the rewards of sales years before his career would truly begin.

Huizar’s drive stems from his immigrant roots. His parents uprooted the family of 10 from La Victorina, Zacatecas, Mexico to give Huizar and his siblings a better future in the U.S.
“They sacrificed everything to give us a chance at a better life,” he said. Huizar worked to honor their sacrifices. “I wanted to work hard to show them that I wasn’t taking that opportunity for granted.”
After earning a degree in accounting from Cal State Long Beach, Huizar decided to make the city his lifelong home and pivot into real estate. He left behind a corporate job offer and quickly became financially independent by age 27 under the mentorship of a local investor. Six years ago, he founded Sage Real Estate Group, which has flourished ever since.
For Huizar, success is about more than financial gain.
“Providing good housing is a huge part of what we do,” he said. Now, he empowers others to build wealth through real estate.
“I wanted to work hard to show them that I wasn’t taking that opportunity for granted.”
After finding success with Sage, Huizar decided to launch a YouTube channel to educate others about real estate and wealth-building. What started as a small project has grown into a platform with thousands of subscribers, reaching viewers not just in Long Beach but across the country and even globally. Through his new found platform, he shares his personal journey, offering valuable insights into the world of apartment ownership, real estate investment, and financial independence.
Huizar’s hope is to empower others to take control of their financial futures — regardless of race, gender or socioeconomic background.
“If I can do it, you can do it,” he says. “It’s about taking that first step and being willing to learn.”

‘A LABOR OF LOVE’: BREAKERS
THE FAIRMONT BREAKERS HAS BEEN RESTORED TO ITS 1920S GRANDEUR WITH A FOCUS ON JAZZ, FINE DINING AND COMMUNITY.
The Breakers Hotel opened in 1926 but has long towered over Ocean Boulevard as a shadow of its former glory. It was the city’s first luxury hotel and later became the first Hilton hotel on the West Coast. By the 1950s, however, its glittering legacy was all but forgotten.
“Maybe another Hilton will come along to rescue the behemoth on the beach from its present and sad condition,” a Press-Telegram columnist wrote in 1963.
Its savior wouldn’t come for many years, and it wouldn’t be another hotel czar. Instead, it was the Long Beach-based investment group

Pacific6. After years of painstaking renovations, the 15-story beacon has reopened as the Fairmont Breakers Hotel. Restored to its original Spanish Renaissance Revival grandeur, the hotel now boasts six bars, two restaurants and a vibrant jazz club.
The revival of the Breakers was a labor of love for Pacific6, says Todd Lemmis, one of the group’s founding partners. He sat down with Long Beach City Lifestyle to share the journey of restoring the city’s beloved landmark.
“It was magical,” Lemmis recalled. “We felt like the fanciest people in the world.”
The Breakers has endured a checkered history. After Conrad Hilton bought the hotel in 1938, it attracted stars like Cary Grant, Rita Hayworth and Errol Flynn. But World War II chased out its Hollywood glamour, with the Sky Room repurposed for Navy officers. By 1990, it had become an assisted living facility before being abandoned in the mid-2010s.
For Lemmis, the Breakers was not only his first foray into the hotel world, but also a place where he made memories himself. It was here, in the building’s iconic Sky Room, that he once took his then-girlfriend — now wife — on a date 25 years ago.
“WE FELT A RESPONSIBILITY TO SAVE THIS BUILDING. IT WAS THE LAST CHANCE IT HAD.”
When Pacific6 acquired the property in 2017, they knew it would be a massive undertaking.
“We felt a responsibility to save this building. It was the last chance it had,” Lemmis said. “We see ourselves as custodians of this landmark, restoring it for future generations.”
The restoration was monumental. Much of the interior was gutted to meet modern safety standards while preserving historic elements. Workers uncovered treasures like hidden nautical patterns in the area now home to the Italian restaurant Nettuno.
“We discovered these beautiful, rectangular, cast-concrete patterns with nautical themes behind drywall,” Lemmis said.
In the Sky Room, Polynesian-style wallpaper was found wrapped around columns, revealing that it had been a Trader Vic’s during Hilton’s tenure. A basement pool once used for saltwater baths was also unearthed. These elements were reintegrated into the design, offering guests a glimpse into the hotel's storied past.
Reviving a century-old building came with challenges, including delays during the COVID-19 pandemic when lenders pulled out. Pacific6 also navigated federal guidelines to qualify for historic preservation tax credits.
“The Department of the Interior initially denied our application because they thought the lobby contained a historic ballroom, which it never did,” Lemmis explained. “We appealed with evidence from Conrad Hilton’s memoir and successfully overturned the decision.”
While the Fairmont Breakers’ reputation as a luxury hotel precedes it, Lemmis stresses that its success hinges on community patronage. Half of its revenue model relies on food and beverage sales.
The hotel offers amenities appealing to locals and visitors alike. The rooftop bar, Halo, provides sweeping views, while Alter Ego is set to become a music venue. The Sky Room, restored to its original design, offers upscale dining and live jazz.
“Long Beach has a rich musical history, especially in jazz,” Lemmis said. “We’re working with KJazz and local talent to make the Breakers a hub for live music.”
The Breakers has long defined the Long Beach skyline but now stands as a symbol of the city’s revitalization. As it approaches its centennial in 2026, plans are already underway for a grand celebration. Until then, locals and visitors are encouraged to enjoy its vibrant offerings.
“Every detail has been carefully considered,” Lemmis said. “This isn’t just a hotel — it’s a love letter to Long Beach.”

Hearty food nourishes the body during cold winter months
What if we chose connection — cooking seasonal meals and allowing ourselves to pause to truly enjoy our food? Maybe cheesy bread could be served without the side of guilt.
As we continue to embrace the cold weather, we may find ourselves craving heavier and grounding foods as we retreat into hibernation. This change in appetite reflects our body’s desire to align with the cycles of nature. Moving into the New Year, it can be common to place more discipline or restrictions on our eating habits. But what if instead of dieting, we nourished ourselves by choosing to support the ebb and flow of our body’s seasons? What if we chose connection — cooking seasonal meals and allowing ourselves to pause to truly enjoy our food? Maybe cheesy bread could be served without the side of guilt. This Italian wedding soup recipe is simple in its approach, but the result is a hearty and brothy dish. Chunky meats and vegetables add texture to the rich, savory broth making it the ideal meal to help you retreat from the cold temperatures. The Hasselback bread loaf is a straightforward, melty wonder and the perfect vessel for sopping up any leftover broth and goodies in your soup bowl. Together, the soup and cheesy bread make for a well-rounded meal to ground you this season, with a little indulgence.

• 1 Italian bread loaf
• 1 cup butter
• 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 tsp kosher salt
• 2 tsp dried oregano
• 8 oz. bag of shredded mozzarella cheese
1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
2. Cut foil that is 3 times the length of the bread loaf and lay flat on countertop.
3. Place bread loaf parallel to the length of the foil.
4. With a serrated knife, cut bread in ¾ in. slices, making sure not to cut all the way through.
5. Melt butter in a bowl. Add garlic and seasonings. Stir to incorporate.
6. With a pastry brush, coat the slices of bread with butter mixture. Be generous with your butter! If you have leftover butter, pour the rest over the entire loaf.
7. Grab handfuls of mozzarella cheese and stuff in between each slice.
8. Cover the bread loaf with foil and place in oven. Bake for 20 minutes, uncovering the foil for the last 5 minutes until the top of the bread is golden brown.
4 Servings
• 1 lb. fresh or frozen pre-made meatballs
• ½ cup carrots, diced small
• ½ cup celery, diced small
• 1 cup onions, diced small
• 3 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 bay leaf
• 2 tbsp butter
• 2 tbsp cooking oil
• 48 oz low sodium chicken broth
• ½ cup orzo pasta (or any small, short noodle)
• 1 tbsp kosher salt
• 1 tsp fresh ground black pepper
• 1 tbsp fresh oregano, chopped roughly
• 1 tbsp fresh flat-leaf parsley
1. Whether freshly baked or cooked from frozen, prepare your meatballs and set aside. Meatballs can be prepared ahead of time and kept in the fridge.
2. Bring a medium-sized pot to medium heat. Add oil and butter.
3. Add vegetables to the pot and sweat until onions are translucent (about 5 minutes). Stir occasionally.
4. Add the bay leaf, chicken broth, salt, and pepper to vegetables. Turn heat to medium-high.
5. Bring broth mixture to a rolling boil for five minutes. With tongs, add meatballs to the boiling broth.
6. Add orzo to the broth, stirring continuously to make sure the pasta doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
7. Continue to cook the pasta for 6-7 minutes. Taste test to make sure pasta is al dente.
8. Throw the fresh herbs into the soup and add salt and pepper to taste.
9. Serve immediately.
The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.
Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.
Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale—also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.
Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.
For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.
Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.
A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.
The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.
However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!
There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.
On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.
While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.
