“We had our Sundance louvered pergola installed three years ago, and we LOVE IT! It is honestly the best improvement we’ve ever made to our home. Our house is cooler in the summer and helps us enjoy our backyard all during the spring, summer and fall. Sundance is the best!”

RAISING awareness

The Ben Morrison Memorial Fund Is a Lifeline for Teens in Crisis
ARTICLE

The ripple effect of a life well-lived, despite how brief, can be powerful. Such is the legacy of Ben Morrison, who passed away in 2021 at age 19, and the inspiration for the Ben Morrison Memorial Fund (BMMF).

The foundation’s mission is to provide support to kids, often high schoolers, who are experiencing adversity, especially those in the midst of a mental health crisis. To erase the stigma often associated with seeking help at such times. To get those in crisis talking. To prevent suicides. It’s also about encouraging and rewarding the kindness and compassion Ben exhibited to family, friends and strangers every day.

BMMF does this in a variety of ways since its founding in March 2021. To date, it has awarded 31 scholarships totaling $27,500 to senior athletes at Loveland High School. Throughout the year, BMMF sponsors mental health awareness activities and events in area schools throughout the community, and provides a resource list on its website of mental health agencies and organizations. And so much more.

But to really appreciate the impact the Ben Morrison Memorial Fund has had on the community, it’s necessary to know who Ben was and meet the Fund’s founder, Ben’s mom, Tori. For it was Tori, with the support of her family, who started the foundation within a month of Ben’s death. It wasn’t anything she ever could have imagined doing four years ago.

Ben, a varsity athlete who played football and lacrosse at Loveland High School, was the kind of friend everyone wants—kind, caring, always looking for ways to help. “He could tell when one of his friends was having a bad day and needed to talk,” Tori says.

Like everyone, Ben’s life was upended by COVID in March 2020, the spring of his senior year. There was no prom, no real graduation, and for Ben, no final lacrosse season. Thoughts of possibly heading to college in the fall to play lacrosse evaporated as weeks turned to months. Uncertain of what his future was, he got one of those jobs deemed necessary during the pandemic, loading UPS trucks. Eventually, he began to consider future options.

His mom and dad, Donnie, made it clear that whatever course Ben chose, they would wholeheartedly support him. And in time, Ben decided he would explore the idea of becoming a firefighter. There were two possible paths: enrolling in the Great Oaks program for firefighter/emergency medical service certification or going through the Cincinnati Fire Academy.

Ben Morrison

March 2, 2021, began much like any other day in the Morrison household. Ben was awake as Tori prepared to leave for work. He had stayed up past midnight to fill out the online application to take the Cincinnati Fire Academy’s civil service exam.

“I told him, ‘That’s awesome, but remember we still have another way if that doesn’t work out,’” Tori recalls.

Later that day, Tori realized she had forgotten something she needed and called Ben, who brought it to her. “When I saw him at about 1:30p, everything seemed fine,” she says. Three hours later, Ben was gone.

“So what changes in someone’s life in three hours … had he been suffering a long time or was it a rash, in-the-moment decision?” Tori asks. “I’ll never know. I’ve talked to his friends, former teachers and coaches … no one thought anything was wrong.” Nor did anyone in the family.

As the family began to process their grief, it quickly became clear they wanted to do something significant to honor Ben’s memory, and an athletic scholarship in his name seemed the obvious answer. Loveland High School reacted quickly to this idea and their offer—and a mere two months later, three of Ben’s former teammates were recipients.

Within a month, Tori established the nonprofit Ben Morrison Memorial Fund as a means of fundraising to support future scholarships. A golf tournament on Father’s Day that year brought out 52 players. “Things just developed organically from there,” Tori explains. Several local organizations and businesses came forward to sponsor fundraisings events and make donations. Since then, community support has continued to grow.

BEN’S WAY

Last year, Ben’s Way was created to honor the qualities Ben exhibited every day. Kids are rewarded for spontaneous acts of compassion, kindness and leadership that are witnessed by school employees. Winners receive a certificate recognizing their act and an Amazon gift card. And the idea has caught on—Ben’s Way is now in nine area schools, with a number of local companies taking part as well. To become a Ben’s Way sponsor or start the program in your school or organization, email BensWayInitiative@gmail.com.

“Loveland is a tremendous community. I can’t say enough about the support we’ve received . People turn out for our events and always donate generously.” - Tori

Some of the most popular events have become annual fundraisers, like the outing at Fowling Warehouse to celebrate Ben’s birthday. “It’s throwing footballs at bowling pins,” Tori says, smiling, explaining the cornhole-meetsbowling-with-footballs game. “Ben loved it. His birthday was February 11, but we always hold it the first Sunday after the ‘Big Game.’” This year it’ll be on February 16. Cappy’s also sponsors an annual BMMF fundraiser in May to mark Mental Awareness Month.

A critical part of the foundation’s efforts still centers around the work that Tori does in schools to raise awareness and to encourage kids to seek help if they are in a dark place. The ultimate goal, of course, is to keep them moving forward toward the life and possibilities that lie ahead.

running START

Don’t tell Frank DeJulius that running is a solitary sport. As the owner of the Fleet Feet store in historic Loveland, he sees running as a source of community.

“I love this store,” he smiles, sitting in the store’s back office and storeroom. “Every time I pull in, it’s like the epicenter of downtown Loveland.”

Weekends (summer or winter) bring hundreds of runners to Nisbet Park, which is right next to the Little Miami Scenic Trail—and within walking (ahem, running) distance from Fleet Feet.

“We feel like we’re the clubhouse,” explains Frank. “Where—whether to use the restroom, get a sip of water, find a new pair of shoes—runners come to congregate.”

THINKING OUTSIDE THE SHOEBOX

For Frank, community is why he got into the running shoe biz in the first place. During college and after majoring in entrepreneurship, he worked at a Fleet Feet in another city. And liked what he saw … it was a gathering spot, where runners would meet up to go on runs together, then get food or coffee or a beer afterward. He wanted that sense of community for his own business. So, Frank stayed in touch with Fleet Feet corporate over the years. Then in 2012, he and his wife, Stacey, had the opportunity to move to Cincinnati and take over the Fleet Feet store in Blue Ash.

TODAY, FLEET FEET IS A MEMBER OF THE LMRCA, AND HELPS SUPPORT SEVERAL local EVENTS, INCLUDING THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING ... free 5K

WEDNESDAYS ... AND PROVIDING

In time, Frank and Stacey were able to expand their footprint to three other Cincinnati locations, including one in Oakley, not too far from Bob Roncker’s Running Spot in O’Bryonville.

“He’s sort of the godfather of Cincinnati running—and really a national legend in the running community,” explains Frank.

As friendly competitors, Frank’s three Fleet Feet stores and Bob’s four Running Spot locations each continued on their own separate ways. Then in 2022, their paths crossed again, when Frank and his wife had the opportunity to purchase all four former Running Spot locations, which had since been sold to another corporation and renamed JackRabbit.

BRINGING BACK HEART AND SOLE

Frank wanted to bring back the spirit and energy that had been a hallmark of the Loveland store when it had been the Running Spot. So, he focused on providing a high level of service and reconnecting with the Loveland community.

Today, Fleet Feet is a member of the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance, and helps support several local events, including the annual Christmas Tree Lighting and community scavenger hunts. The couple also brought back the Running Spot’s free 5Ks on Wednesday nights—which run (pun intended) from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and attract more than 100 runners almost every week. Fleet Feet also hosts runs to raise money for local charities, including the DoitforJack/Jack Quehl Foundation, which educates students, parents and professionals about the dangers of fentanyl.

Within the Greater Cincinnati running community, Fleet Feet is probably best known for providing the Official Training Program of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, which in 2024 was rated the No. 1 marathon in the United States by USA Today’s 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards. Fleet Feet also offers a “No Boundaries” training program for those who are just starting to run or who want to lead a more active life. “No Boundaries is the most magical program we offer,” Frank says, smiling.

However, it’s not just runners who flock to Fleet Feet. The Loveland store also draws soccer moms and dads, athletes from school and club sports, as well as many who make a living standing on their feet all day.

“The world sees this as a running store, but really, we’re just a place for people who want comfortable shoes,” Frank offers. The shop is also a hub for popular workout apparel and athletic gear from brands like Vuori, lululemon and Brooks.

THE WORLD SEES THIS AS A running STORE, BUT REALLY, WE’RE JUST A PLACE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT comfortable SHOES.

“PAIRING UP” WITH THE RIGHT SHOE

Fleet Feet takes a highly personalized approach to helping customers find the right shoe. It’s called “fit id®”—a free service where the entire foot is scanned and turned into a 3D image. From there, the scan is compared against Fleet Feet’s database to determine a customer’s best fit profile.

“When the foot is properly supported and cushioned, you’re going to have less fatigue going all the way up your body,” explains Frank.

So whether you’re a serious runner, just getting started, or need a comfortable shoe for a long shift at the hospital, the staff at Fleet Feet will take as much time with you as you need—with prices ranging from $120 to $300, with most pairs averaging about $150.

PUTTING THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY IN MOTION

Since 2008, Loveland’s historic Train Depot has been home to a running shop. Today, Frank wants to make sure everyone feels at home inside his Fleet Feet store, and that the spirit of community that Bob Roncker started way back in 1981 carries on. All while Fleet Feet helps to put a new generation—from runners to athletes to everyday people on their feet—in motion.

BRINGING BETTER EYE CARE INTO FOCUS

Dedicated Vision

In just four short years, 2020 Eyecare Ohio has grown from eye-catching startup to regional eyecare leader. And now, an expansion to its facility allows the practice to “double down” on a commitment to serving neighbors with state-of-the-art technology and customer-first services.

What’s the secret to its success? Drs. David Williams and Alex Gibberman chalk it up to taking what they say is a “different approach” to eye care.

“First, we own our practice,” Alex says. “And we plan on owning it for the duration of our careers— so we’re committed to a long-term strategy.”

“We also place a strong emphasis on creating a positive office culture and prioritizing employee retention,” he adds. “We want to ensure our patients are greeted by familiar faces every time they visit.”

When David and Alex first opened their doors in 2020, there were some concerning trends taking place within the industry.

“We noticed a growing shift toward a private equity-owned, multilocation corporate model,” David explains, adding that the trend seemed to begin when private optometry practices began selling to private equity firms. “As private equity took control, practices became increasingly focused on short-term gains—prioritizing immediate revenue over long-term patient care” Which led to practices overloading their schedules to maximize patient volume. The result, he continues, was “high staff turnover, poorly maintained facilities, subpar customer service, and long wait times to see a doctor.”

David and Alex’s business model for 2020 Eyecare was created as a direct response to that trend. Today, their dedicated customer base is proof-positive that their strategy was a sound one.

Also key to 2020 Eyecare’s success has been providing a comprehensive suite of services—including dry eye treatment, myopia control, and management of eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes-related eye conditions, and macular degeneration.

One treatment in particular, however, has made a big impression on both of the docs.

“Our most fulfilling offering is specialty contact lens services—often referred to as scleral contact lenses,” Alex says. “It’s amazing what these lenses can accomplish, and we’re amazed every day by the results they achieve. These lenses help treat a variety of conditions, from irregularly shaped eyes to severe dry eye disease.”

David also notes the benefits of specialty contact lenses. “When we opened our office, we recognized the potential of these lenses to benefit our patients, but we couldn’t have anticipated just how many people would need this specialized care. We’re so happy to provide it.”

Regardless of the treatment or care any one patient might receive, 2020 Eyecare stands by its commitment to customer satisfaction, and both doctors express pride in receiving consistent positive feedback in regard to their staff, care and overall customer experience. “That, more than anything, has led to our growth,” Alex smiles. “Our goal has always been to combine modern practices with the kind of personal, old-school customer service that builds lasting relationships.”

David and Alex are quick to point out that they both also live in Loveland, which further cements their commitment to being involved in the community and investing in its success.

Their practice, they say, isn’t going anywhere— which is a very good thing for those in Loveland and the surrounding area. Especially now that their office footprint has doubled in size.

“We’re here to stay,” David confidently shares, “and excited to continue providing exceptional care for many years to come.”

Sustainability, Better Ingredients and Healthy Goods at the Next Level

Felous

What’s one thing Rachel wants you to know about what they’re doing at Simply Zero? “We call ourselves a ‘sustainable lifestyle shop, refillery and community,’ and I think the community piece is a really big part of it. Such a big part of making a lifestyle change like going ‘zero waste’ is having a community to support you.”

Looking for options that are healthier for both you and the planet, but don’t know where to start? Simply Zero has you covered. With everything from cleaning supplies to kids’ toys, there’s something new and exciting on every shelf—waiting for you to discover a new option that’s better for the environment and your home.

Simply Zero owner and founder, Rachel Felous, grew up in Maineville— with Loveland’s nature and activities at her doorstep. When the time came to expand her business outside of OTR, it made sense to bring her community to a place that always felt like home.

“I just thought, the suburbs need a place like this, too.” The new location on West Loveland Avenue is a gorgeous space with large windows that look into a store full of pristine white shelves stocked with all kinds of goodies. There’s plenty to choose from—some things prepackaged and ready for immediate purchase, in addition to a refillery. What’s a refillery, you ask? A complete wall full of jars of soaps, detergents and more, where you can refill reusable containers, then purchase based on weight. Bring your own containers or buy in-store vessels, and simply return every time you need a refill.

But what makes Simply Zero so great for you? “One of our core values as a company is to provide products that have been curated and vetted for their ingredients,” Rachel explains. Every product that sees the shelves of Simply Zero has been researched in-depth by Rachel herself to ensure the product has nothing but natural, toxin-free ingredients. “Every ingredient is passed through databases to track the environmental toxicity.” This ensures that only the best of the best is being offered to you (and the environment).

At the end of the day, Rachel and Simply Zero are going the extra mile to bring you products that are amazing for you and our planet—putting in the hard work to make a healthy, happy lifestyle easy for you.

touchdown for HOPE

Watch the Big Game, Support Mental Health and Addiction Services

American author H. Jackson Brown Jr. once said, “Never deprive someone of hope … it may be all they have.” Those powerful words are a testament to finding a path beyond despair.

The Lindner Center of HOPE is a nationally known nonprofit that has built its foundation around the premise of “healthy communities start with hope,” providing mental health and addiction services to more than 50,000 patients and families since 2008.

Mary Alexander, Senior Director of Development, has been with the center for 13 years. “I was drawn to the Lindner Center of HOPE because of its commitment to providing the highest-quality mental health care in the region,” she explains. “And its comprehensive approach to healing.”

In an effort to offer mental health services and improve the health of the community, the Center has become a “safe landing” for patients.

“Families have expressed how their loved ones are ‘not just living but thriving ’ … a true testament to the life-changing care provided here,” Mary shares.

Among the Center’s most popular annual fundraisers is Touchdown for HOPE—this year held on “Big Game” Sunday (Feb. 9) at Great American Ballpark from 5:30-10:30 p.m.

“It’s a classy and fun football party with big-screen TVs, plush seating, signature Cincinnati food favorites and upscale tailgate-style treats,” explains Mary.

Touchdown for HOPE was started by a member of the board with the help of a few others. “We wanted to offer a communal event to support mental health in a fun and relaxed manner—to counter the stigma and raise awareness that mental health is a part of health care,” emphasizes Dr. Michael Groat, interim CEO and chief clinical officer.

“This is a family and community event that reflects the commitment of Cincinnati to be at the forefront of health care,” Dr. Groat continues. “It signifies that we’re making a statement on behalf of people who have been impacted by mental health issues.”

The event will raise money for the Transforming HOPE Capital Campaign, a $30 million fundraising effort focused on treatment facility upgrades, wellness facility enhancements, and clinician recruitment and retention.

The goal of focusing on these three elements includes increasing the number of patients served, enhancing treatment quality, upgrading existing treatment programs and introducing new wellness services—$27 million of which has already been raised by the Center.

“We’ve been incredibly blessed with generous support from the board of directors and friends of the Center,” Dr. Groat smiles. “In so many ways, their lives have intersected with people who have struggled with some form of mental illness. They see the power of this type of treatment. And they want to support it. They recognize that the need for quality mental health care will only continue to grow.”

“We’re dedicated to supporting families by addressing the unique needs of both patients and their loved ones,” adds Mary. “Fostering a compassionate foundation that strengthens connections and promotes healing.”

The commitment of the staff, along with their kindness and welcoming spirit, is part of what drew Dr. Groat to work at the Center and support its efforts. He sees it as an opportunity to serve as a beacon of hope, and is proud to have the Center be part of our local community.

“We warmly welcome everyone to join us at Touchdown for HOPE,” he offers. It’s set to be the best watch party in town—and all for an amazing community cause.

There’s probably no more quintessential symbol of winter than a snowman. We’ve all seen Frosty and are probably pretty familiar with Olaf. But if you want to install one into your own yard, you’ll have to put a little elbow grease into creating one without the help of world-class animators.

Here are some tips to help give your yard a well-dressed frozen sentry sure to turn your neighbors’ heads.

Tip 1:

NOT ALL SNOW IS SNOWMAN SNOW.

It takes more than a flurry to build a snowman. Heavy, slushy snow won’t work, and if it’s too powdery dry it won’t pack together. If you can pack a good snowball, you can build a snowman.

Bonus tip: Dry snow can be modified to workable snowman snow with a quick spritz of water from a spray bottle, or a light mist from that garden hose you really should have already put away for the winter.

Tip 2:

ROLL TOWARDS YOUR GOAL

— THE LONG WAY.

Decide where to position your snowman and make that your finish line. Start with a

well-packed snowball and get rolling, but don’t just go in one direction. Roll the ball to start accumulating snow, then roll back, then roll in a different direction. Pack and begin to shape your snowball as you go. Reinforce as necessary. Look to use a 3-2-1 ratio for the sections.

Tip 3:

EVEN SNOWMEN CRAVE STABILITY.

Once you get your base section in place, shore up the bottom with snow. Then at the top, create a bowl-shaped indentation to allow the next section to sit securely. Ensure each section is well-packed with added snow around the “joint” between the sections.

Tip 4:

SNOW IS HEAVY. ENLIST A BUDDY.

A willing helper can help lift that heavy next stage into place. You can even roll it onto a tarp and lift from either side to get it up there. A third set of hands can help move it into place. Otherwise, use plywood as a ramp to roll it up yourself (braced well against the bottom with plenty of support underneath, so as to not damage the base). You might need an extra bowl of Wheaties to roll it up there alone.

Tip 5:

PILOT HOLES ARE YOUR FRIEND.

Simply jamming details into your snowman can mess with its integrity. Use a sharp stick to gently create some pilot holes for your features before you set them into place.

Tip

6:

GIVE HIM SOME PERSONALITY.

There’s always that classic snowman uniform of a scarf, hat, a carrot nose and coal (sure, we all have that lying around these days — river rocks might be easier to get your hands on). Or you could be a bit more creative, maybe with an old oversized Hawaiian shirt, a jazzy vest, or go all-out and channel your inner Martha Stewart, breaking out your Dremel to make something custom for your wintery lawn guest. You might need to use your imagination — not many of us have corncob pipes or top hats anymore, either.

Pro tip: if you’re dressing your snowman, put any body clothing you might use on before adding the arms.

Just remember. If you mess it up, it’s ok because he’ll be back again some day.
