Happy Birthday, Lee’s Summit!
W
hat an amazing town this is. We have an impressive group of involved and passionate citizens who have been working together for more than a year to make sure the 150th birthday of our town is celebrated with style and vision. They’ve planned 12 months of greatness. They’ve planned special events that will happen in local theaters, parks and the Downtown area. We’ve teamed up with the Truly 150 Marketing Committee and plan to bring a number of stories to you this year that focus on the history of our town as well as the plans for special celebrations and events. You’re probably wondering…”What kind of gift do I get for a city that’s turning 150?” I know I was. And I’ve got the perfect answer. You give your thanks and appreciation by attending as many of the special events that have been planned for your enjoyment as you can fit into your calendar. And if you have friends and family who used to live in Lee’s Summit but have moved to neighboring communities, you could go above and beyond the call of duty and invite them to come back to Lee’s Summit to enjoy some of these great events as your guests. None of this year of spectacular wonderfulness would be happening without the volunteers who signed up to be in charge. These include the honorary Chairs of the Truly 150 Steering Committee, Mayor Randy Rhoads and Dr. Robert E. “Bud” Hertzog. The Chair of the Steering Committee is Art Davis. Mr. Davis had the support of more businesses, organizations, neighborhoods and people than we can mention here, many of whom have purchased sponsorships, volunteered on the committees and are working hard to plan these amazing events. Read more about their efforts on page 24 and put those dates on your calendars.

Around Town SUMMIT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY NAMED TO TOP FIVE PRIVATE SCHOOLS LIST Summit Christian Academy (SCA) is pleased to announce that they have been ranked as the number five spot for the Kansas City-Metro area private schools by the Kansas City Business Journal. This is the first time in SCA history that they have been ranked in the top five. Last year SCA was ranked number nine. The Kansas City Business Journal’s annual compilation of private schools, The List, determines school rankings based on fall enrollment figures submitted from each institution. Various other characteristics are also noted, including student to teacher ratio, tuition, and academic curriculum. “We are so grateful that God has provided our school the opportunity to be recognized as one of the top five schools in the Kansas City area,” says SCA Head of School Linda Harrelson. “Our mission is to inspire students to achieve their God-given potential through excellent academics in a Christian environment, and we are privileged to have impacted the lives of so many students and graduates. This year, we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary and we have much to be thankful for!”

Students at Hazel Grove Elementary School recently created a 4-foot-by-8-foot mural for their school using plastic bottle caps. The project was organized by the school’s art teacher, Rise Stephenson, with students collecting the multi-colored caps for almost a full year. Students submitted mural ideas to Stephenson, who combined several sketches into one design and painted the basic outline on a large piece of wood. During art classes, children glued the caps to the board, creating a work of art currently hanging outside the art and music room. In all, it is estimated that the piece includes approximately 2,900 bottle caps.

visiting diners to experience new restaurants and revisit old favorites. Participants in 2015 Kansas City Restaurant Week offer multi-course meals for lunch and dinner from pre-determined, fixed menus for $15 at lunch and $33 at dinner. Participating restaurants create custom menus from existing, new and “limited time only” dishes. Reaffirming their commitment to social and civic responsibility, the event’s co-founders, the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association and Visit KC, selected three local organizations as beneficiaries of 2015 Kansas City Restaurant Week. Ten percent of all proceeds from Restaurant Week meals sold during the ten days benefits BoysGrow, Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired and Cultivate Kansas City. Tremendous support by local and visiting diners helped Kansas City Restaurant Week raise more than $750,000 that benefited local charities during the first five years of the dining event.

“Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.” -- Michael J. Fox
K
erri Gray and her family have been rooted in Lee’s Summit for 18 years, but her influence reaches families all over Lee’s Summit and beyond. LEARN, THEN DO
Born and raised in Chicago, Gray studied marriage and family therapy in graduate school at Northern Illinois University. There, she met and married fellow student Phil. Between 1994 and 1997, the couple did it all, it seemed: They moved from Chicago to Grand Rapids, Michigan to open and direct a satellite office of the Minirth-Meier New Life Clinic; first daughter Alison was born; and they moved from Michigan to Lee’s Summit, where second daughter Jennifer made her appearance. “It was so stressful,” Gray says, “but it was crazy and wonderful as well.” BACK TO WORK
Motivated to stay home more with her children, Gray worked part time at what is now Lee’s Summit CARES. “Then,” Gray says, “it was known as Drug Awareness Referral Exchange, or DARE.” She helped them develop a mission, vision and strategic plan. Part of the process included changing the name to Lee’s Summit CARES to avoid confusion with the police’s D.A.R.E. program in schools. About the time their third daughter, Katie, was born, Gray’s work responsibilities changed. “The board saw the need for parenting classes in the community,” Gray says. “My passion is people, not administration, so I jumped at the chance.” “The Love and Logic (L&L) method 18
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2015
provides a great foundation for parenting,” Gray says. “We teach moms and dads to parent with empathy while providing logical consequences.” Lee’s Summit CARES registers 260 people a year in these classes (LSCARES.org), and they boast a 90 percent completion rate. “At the first class,” Gray says, “I say, ‘Everyone is welcome. Come once. If you hate it, you don’t have to come back.’ Everyone always comes back.” Gray urges parents not to let cost hold them back. “We will work with you regarding fees. And in Lee’s Summit, once you take an L&L class, you’re a lifetime member and can take free refresher courses geared toward the ages of your growing children.” In addition to L&L, which she’s been teaching for 14 years, Gray also teaches anti-bullying workshops in Lee’s Summit’s elementary schools. All of the programs for kindergarteners and fifth and sixth graders emphasize compassion and teach age-appropriate ways to stand up against bullying of any kind. The program is available to the pre-k and high schools, too. In September 2014, approximately 500 Lee’s Summit kids completed the program. WINDING DOWN
Youngest daughter Samantha joined her three older sisters in 2005, so Gray and her husband have had plenty of opportunities to practice what she preaches. Four daughters bring lots of braces, homecomings dresses, and planning for college. But Gray is quick to point out: They also bring lots of fun. Still, Gray cherishes alone time. “I garden and read a lot, but running is
my thinking time,” she says. “I just strap on my shoes and go.” In 2012, she ran her first half marathon, the KC half marathon. “It was amazing and awful all at once. The mental challenge really hit me the last three miles.” Since then, she’s completed Rock the Parkway half marathon and the Go Girl Run. When she’s not running or teaching, she’s a swim coach for the Suburban Swim League’s Windsboro Waves and for the Kansas City Blazers swim club. LOVING LEE’S SUMMIT
What’s so special about Lee’s Summit to this Chicago native? “I love the parks and trails,” she says. “We live next to Legacy Park, and I run there several times a week.” She also loves the schools. “Alison is in college now, and she felt well prepared when she left home,” Gray says. “And our third grader is learning leadership in a program based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits Of Highly Successful People.” Add the small-town feel and great shops downtown, and what’s not to love about Lee’s Summit? “Overall,” Gray says, “It’s just a great place for families.”

Local Student Chosen for Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, DC ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
K
agan Davis, a junior at Lee’s Summit West High School, was nominated for and recently attended the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, DC. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of the event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Kagan was nominated by Dr. Connie Mariano, the medical director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists (NAFPMS) to represent Lee’s Summit West High School based on his academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine. During the three-day Congress, Kagan joined students from across the country and heard Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading medical research; was given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; witnessed stories told by patients who are living medical miracles; were inspired by fellow teen medical science prodigies; and learned 20

about cutting-edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology. “This is a crucial time in America when we need more doctors and medical scientists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, executive director, NAFPMS. “Focused, bright and determined students like Kagan are our future and he deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give him.” The Academy offers free services and programs to students who want to be physicians or go into medical science. Some of the services and programs the Academy plans to launch in 2015 are online social networks through which future doctors and medical scientists can communicate; opportunities for students to be guided and mentored by physicians and medical students; and communications for parents and students on college acceptance and finances, skills acquisition, internships, career guidance and much more. The NAFPMS was founded on the belief that we must identify prospective medical talent at the earliest possible age and help these students acquire the necessary experience and skills to take them to the doorstep of this vital career. Midwest Gastroenterology AT THE HEART OF TECHNOLOGY AND COMPASSION ARTICLE ELIZABETH ROSENBERGER PHOTOGRAPHY MCKENNA MATHEWSON
B
efore Lees Summit became the booming metropolis that it is today, Dr. Marc Taormina was making house calls as a medical student with Dr. Herb Dempsey Sr. on a motorcycle. That experience drew Taormina back to the community in 1985 to start his gastroenterology practice after serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. Midwest Gastroenterology, located at 3601 NE Ralph Powell Road, or “Where the 10th hole of the former Woods Chapel Golf course once was,” Taormina says with a contagious sense of humor, is a state-of-theart medical practice and is adjacent to the Midwest Physicians Surgery Center – a nationally certified and accredited outpatient surgery center dedicated solely to gastrointestinal procedures. Taormina is proud that the surgery center is the only American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy certified endoscopy center in western Missouri, reflecting the center’s emphasis on quality and safety measures that benchmark with other national facilities. Midwest Gastroenterology Physicians are on staff at Centerpoint Medical Center, Centerpoint Ambulatory Surgical Center, North Kansas City Hospital and St. Luke’s Northland, providing both inpatient and outpatient treatment options. Taormina feels being a physician is a privilege. He listens to each patient and recommends aggressive, proactive diagnostic treatment plans designed to save lives and provide 22

ultimate comfort. Areas of particular interest and expertise include colon cancer screening with colonoscopy examinations, outpatient hemorrhoid treatments, acid reflux and swallowing disorders and treatment of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The patient care team is comprised of Wade McCullough, DO; Ervin Eaker, MD and Phylis Ling, DO (all board certified physicians); and three board certified nurse practitioners: Chris Martinez, ARNP; Stephanie Justin, ARNP; and Kate Steensma, FNP. Same-day office appointments and Saturday appointments for office visits and endoscopic procedures have recently been added to accommodate patients and referring physician requests, and for added patient convenience. Taormina has been named by his peers to the 2015 Super Doctors® list and has received the 2014 Patients Choice Award from the American registry based on patient ratings of various aspects of care including bedside manner, time spent and follow up care. The American Board of Internal Medicine currently certifies him in three specialties: internal medicine, gastroenterology, and geriatric medicine. A new and novel outpatient hemorrhoid technology that has changed the way patients are being treated is the HET™ System. This procedure utilizes bipolar energy (non-surgical) to effectively treat all as well as the most advanced hemorrhoids in one outpatient session. It is usually performed
under light sedation and results in their shrinkage and subsequent resolution of the disturbing symptoms. The HET™ System was designed to help improve patient outcomes and simplify the technique, while achieving maximum patient comfort and cost-effectiveness. Patients can resume normal activities either the same or next day and it’s covered by most insurances. With March officially designated as Colon Cancer Awareness month, emphasis on making the community aware of the importance of colon cancer screening is something that Midwest Gastroenterology views as vitally important on a daily basis. Starting screening at age 50 (or at age 40 if a family member has colon polyps/cancer) is being proactive to ensure that colon cancer is prevented by removing precancerous polyps. Newer colon preparations are easily tolerated and newer drugs allow exams to be done while completely asleep. Although the landscape of technology continually changes to provide better tools for treatment and detection, Midwest Gastroenterology will always be found at the heart of gastroenterology advances to create a healthier you. For more information on Midwest Gastroenterology, visit MidwestGastro.com or call 816.836.2200.

just the ticket for any traveler in search of the perfect winter getaway or a spring break. Family in tow? Activities abound for every interest. Couple’s escape? Find romance on the pristine beaches and in Magnolia Springs, a quaint village off the beaten path. Girlfriends’ retreat? Besties can pamper themselves with plenty of retail therapy and sunset happy hours fueled by refreshing cocktails. The region’s leisurely pace from sunrise to sundown combined with old-fashioned Southern hospitality are sure to charm and captivate travelers young and young-at-heart. After all, it’s an endless summer in this sun-drenched, come-as-youplease neck of the woods.
FAMILY FUN
Once you’ve logged in beach time, head out to explore the other side of the Gulf Shores region. The 180-year-old Fort Morgan at the mouth of Mobile Bay gives history buffs a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of American coast defense fortifications from 1834 to World War II. After spending time touring the Civil Warera star-shaped fort, venture out to the western end of the Fort Morgan Peninsula, named by the American Bird Conservancy as a “One Hundred Globally Important Bird Area,” to spot birds and butterflies. Spend a delightful afternoon on a dolphin and nature watch cruise with a CetaceanCruises.com in the Gulf Coast’s Wolf Bay—the expert guides will reveal the flora and fauna of the area and even introduce you to the bottlenose dolphins that reside in the area. Hop on a rental bike from Beach Bike Rentals and discover the beautiful Gulf State Park’s Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail; soak in the great outdoors while spying indigenous wildlife, native plants and maybe even an alligator or two. COUPLE’S ESCAPE
If unplugging from the world is on your vacation itinerary, check out Perdido Beach Resort located in Orange Beach near Alabama Point where the Intracoastal Waterway meets the Gulf’s deep blue waters. With prime waterfront and multiple restaurants, your retreat to bliss is complete at this island oasis. Or choose a long weekend at the award-winning Magnolia Springs Bed and Breakfast, a historic landmark in Magnolia Springs, a short 30-minute jaunt from the Gulf Shores area. Swing your club at the nine-hole par 3 course right down the road at Magnolia Springs Golf or play two Arnold Palmer signature courses at Craft Farms in Gulf Shores. Enjoy a cozy lunch at Jesse’s Restaurant at the Moore Brothers Village Market where you can order oysters, Angus beef or seafood entrees in history-rich surroundings. GIRLFRIENDS’ RETREAT
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is a tailor-made destination for when the girls need to get out of town. Stay at Caribe Resort, located on more than 30 acres of a picturesque peninsula overlooking Perdido Pass, known for its luxury accommodations, tennis courts, five-star restaurant, over 40,000-square-feet of pools, vistas to watch stunning sunsets and more. No girls’ trip is complete without marathon shopping—begin your day at Coastal Arts Center and The Hot Shop located on shores of lovely Wolf Bay in Orange Beach for unique treasures, including watercolors and handblown glass, crafted by local and regional artists. Grab a latte from The Southern Grind Coffee House and stroll The Wharf in Orange Beach, an upscale entertainment district filled with boutique shops selling home décor, luxury bath accessories and the latest in beachwear. Book a hot stone massage or a mani-pedi at Fusion Spa Salon Aveda and then take a spin on the Southeast’s tallest Ferris wheel for a birds-eye view of the Gulf. Enjoy Italian-inspired dining at Villaggio Grille and catch live music and a
nightcap at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill. For an amazing view and terrific burgers and seafood sandwiches, try out The Gulf in Orange Beach. Constructed from repurposed shipping containers and chock-full of comfy seating and picnic tables, this welcoming little beach bar is a hot spot for locals and visitors.
Lucy’s Local Flavors For those familiar with the gospel according to singer Jimmy Buffet—warm days, cool nights in a tropical paradise, enjoying a margarita or cold beer—scenes from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach might seem like lyrics from one of his familiar kick-back-and-relax anthems. And it’s not too far from the truth because Buffet spent most of his growing-up years in Mobile, Alabama, about an hour north from Gulf Shores. Buffet’s sister, Lucy, has two popular restaurants in Gulf Shores that feature the area’s signature seafood and then some. LuLu’s is a sprawling family-friendly restaurant with an extensive menu. Conveniently located off Alabama Highway 59 at the Intercoastal Waterway and Homewood Marina, LuLu’s is a rollicking good time for all ages and appetites. Before dinner, peruse the well-stocked shop for colorful souvenir t-shirts, mugs, jewelry and décor, along with LuLu’s own line of Caribbean-inspired hot sauces and seasonings. Settle in with an irresistible Island Mango Colada and a Cheeseburger in Paradise, tap your toes to live music and finish off the meal with a slice of sublime Key lime pie. The kids are comfortable at LuLu’s too –the bright décor, lively atmosphere and friendly staff ensure an unforgettable experience for the whole gang. A hop, skip and jump from LuLu’s front door is Lucy B. Goode, Lucy’s homage to Deep South fare reimagined with a fresh, creative twist. Closed during the winter months, the upscale—but “not too fancy,” according to Lucy—restaurant effortlessly combines a contemporary beachy café vibe with classic southern flavors. LuLu’s famous gumbo is served here, along with small plates highlighting the Gulf’s delicious seafood. And what’s not to like about a restaurant that tempts you with house-made desserts, including the “Today’s Something Chocolate” selection. Lucy Buffet is a total pro at dishing up the sweet life in Gulf Shores. Where To Stay Accommodations in the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area are as diverse as the recreation and leisure opportunities. Choose from beach houses for family or generational reunions and resorts, condos, hotels and bed-and-breakfasts. If you’re bringing Fido along, there are plenty of pet-friendly options, too. EATINGS Eating healthy and local for winter. ARTICLE PETE DULIN | PHOTOGRAPHY FAIR SHARE FARM, REBECCA GRAFF & THOMAS RUGGIERI
E
ating healthy food that is locally grown and produced doesn’t have to be daunting during winter. Winter is a time to eat a wide variety of foods dense in nutrients and full of flavor. Substituting healthy foods for salty, sweet and fattening snacks involves knowing what to avoid and trying tasty, nutritious options. “Focus on snacks free of white flour, white sugar and other highly-processed ingredients like artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners and preservatives,” says Lisa Markley, MS, RDN, and registered dietitian and healthy eating specialist at Whole Foods Market. “Opting for real food options will help bridge the gap between meals with more nourishing choices.” Markley suggests snacks such as popcorn sprinkled with seaweed gomasio (a Japanese condiment made of sesame seeds, sea salt and a blend of sea vegetables) or avocado toast on sprouted whole grain bread. Other ideas include roasted pistachios mixed with apple-juice sweetened dried cranberries, medjool dates with a dollop of local goat cheese; or simply sliced apples, pears or dark chocolate dipped in natural peanut butter or almond butter. When shopping, gather seasonal fruit 32

such as apples, pears, persimmon, pomegranate, citrus, cranberries and dried fruits. “Winter is a great time of year to enjoy cooked fruit, which makes a perfectly sweet, yet healthy dessert,” Markley says. “I love making fruit compote, baked apples and poached pears.” Autumn and winter vegetables include winter squashes (butternut, acorn, Delicata, spaghetti), sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts and beets that can be easily roasted. Markley also advises people to “eat the rainbow.” “We eat with our eyes first, so finding consistent ways to add colorful fruits and vegetables to each meal or snack is a great way to not only amp up your antioxidant intake, but it also makes your food more visually appealing,” Markley says. “Once you get in the habit, you will notice meals lacking in color are bland and boring.” Beans are ideal food in soups for colder weather. Markley also suggests eating whole grains such as oats, brown rice, quinoa, millet, wild rice and buckwheat. These grains can be prepared as a savory pilaf, in a stir-fry or stuffed into roasted winter squash. Spices
like cinnamon, ginger, and pepper are great ways to amplify the flavor of foods while promoting internal warmth. When possible, try obtaining locally-grown foods. “Local farmers grow crops for their flavor, not their ability to be shipped long distances and stored indefinitely,” Markley says. “Eating local also challenges you to try new foods as they come into season, encouraging you to eat outside your comfort zone.”
Anyone can become a locavore without investing much time in the practice. “Locavore” refers to a person interested in eating food that is locally produced, when available, and is not moved long distances to market. Greater Kansas City is home to many area farmers eager to sell their bounty year-round. Kansas City Food Circle maintains an online resource directory of member farms and farmers that run organic and sustainable operations (KCFoodCircle.org). This resource is a good place to connect directly with local growers and producers. “There are many places and much food to find in the winter,” says Alicia Ellingsworth, Cultivate Kansas City Program Manager at the Juniper Gardens Training Farm. “Several farms run a fall/winter community-supported agriculture program (CSA) including our Gibbs Road Farm.” Seasonal foods could be a shopping list by itself. Ellingsworth cites spinach, carrots, turnips, beets, radishes, sunchokes, arugula, salad mix, microgreens of many varieties, kale, Swiss chard, bok choi, Asian greens, garlic, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes and winter squash. “Other items available are cheese, milk, meat, eggs, bread, honey, nuts and soaps,” adds Ellingsworth. If joining a CSA program – where participants essentially buy and receive delivery of a periodic allotment of a farmer’s produce and goods – isn’t practical, then start with the local grocery store. The Good Natured Family Farms (GNFF) brand represents more than 150 family farms and small businesses. These farms sell foods through Kansas City’s Hen House Markets, Ball’s Price Chopper Supermarkets and select retail locations. Buying GNFF produce, meat, dairy, eggs and honey means not only eating high-quality, locally grown and produced food, but also supporting sustainable farms. Honey is abundant and available direct from local sources. Shauna and Dave Eastwood of Eastwood Farms in Paola, Kans., sell pure, raw honey direct from their single-source apiary and deliver to most locations in metro KC. Cooper’s Honey (based in Peculiar, Mo.) sources honey from local
beekeeping partners in Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska, and is available in many local supermarkets. Tom Ruggieri and Rebecca Graff of Fair Share Farm in Kearney offer a CSA program, but also sell direct
through Badseed Farm and Market’s (1909 McGee) monthly Friday night market from 4-8 p.m. “Things grow slow this time of year, so supplies of fresh produce vary with the harvest,” Ruggieri says. While supplies last, items they offer include eggs, sauerkraut, kimchi, garlic, lettuce, red cabbage, yellow onions, arugula, spinach, chard and kale. “We recently sold kraut to The Sundry Market and Kitchen for sale on their shelves.” Badseed sells its own produce and goods, plus certified organic grass-fed beef from Wells Family Farms, Bread of Life Bakery, and produce, baked goods, jams, jellies, pickles and relishes from Western Produce. Howard’s Organic Fare and Vegetable Patch, operated by founder Craig Howard, is a membership grocery focused on local produce. “Stony Crest, Badseed, Thane Palmberg, Goode Acres and City Bitty are the main farmers that I work with during winter,” Howard says. Although Howard closed his storefront in late fall 2014, he temporarily sells produce at Badseed. In November, he raised funds to build a new space (1708 Oak) in 2015 that will include a commercial kitchen, cafe and rooftop garden in addition to the grocery store.
Howard anticipates re-opening in February. Weston-based Green Dirt Farms’ sheep’s milk cheeses and yogurts are available via GreenDirtFarm.com and in retail shops and grocery stores in Kansas and Missouri. Family-owned Shatto Milk’s ice cream, milk, cheese curds, and butter is available in many grocery stores throughout greater Kansas City, rural Missouri and eastern Kansas. Don’t feel like cooking? Consider local restaurants and retailers supplied by area farmers. “We sell to The Webster House, The Farmhouse, Story and Harvest,” Ellingsworth says. “Many other restaurants source from other growers.” Be Love Too Farm, a sustainable farm in Edgerton, Kans., produces non-certified organic vegetables, herbs, wheatgrass and sprouts for Cafe Gratitude KC. The Farmhouse near the City Market, Renee Kelly’s Harvest in Shawnee, Novel in KC’s West Side, and Justus Drugstore in Smithville are some of many area restaurants that use local meat, produce and ingredients when available and practical. Eating local and healthy is easier than ever for all seasons, no matter your lifestyle. January 2015 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

Tracy Sample Named One of 12 Distinguished Principals in Missouri ARTICLE JANICE PHELAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
racy Sample, Lee’s Summit Elementary School principal, has been named Distinguished Principal by the Kansas City Suburban Elementary Principals Association (KCSEPA). Sample was one of several administrators nominated by fellow elementary and middle school principals from Kansas City area districts. She was selected by the organization based on meeting rigorous national criteria for this award and her distinguished performance as a principal at her school, in her district, within her community and beyond, said KCSEPA officials. In the words of her colleagues: “Tracy works tirelessly to meet the diverse needs of her special learning community.” “She has worked to provide one-to-one devices for students in her building in order to help differentiate instruction as well as to provide them with access to technology that they may not have in their homes. She is a strong advocate for seeing that students’ needs are met and works closely with school staff and district personnel to see that there is adequate staffing and programming for students.” “Tracy is such a humble person, and she would never expect this kind of honor. I don’t think she has any idea how much those around her think of her as an exceptional leader because of the difference she makes with her students, staff, and families as well as those of us who know her.” Lee’s Summit Elementary serves approximately 300 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Sample has partnered with

community organizations to support the needs of her students and families in innovative, effective ways. In addition, she has demonstrated an inspiring commitment to supporting her staff in the work they do for their students. “Lee’s Summit Elementary focuses on building strong relationships with each student, parent and staff member,” Sample says. “This has been crucial, and is the catalyst for success for all of our students.” Sample has served as principal at Lee’s Summit Elementary since 2011. She has earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech pathology, both from the University of Central Missouri, and a master’s degree and specialist degree, both in elementary administration from William Woods University. The Missouri Distinguished Principals program honors outstanding elementary and middle-level administrators who ensure that Missouri’s children acquire a sound foundation for lifelong learning and achievement. By promoting excellent leadership, quality education and professional growth, this award celebrates principals and exemplifies their outstanding achievements. Each year, the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals honors 12 Distinguished Principals from around the state. Sample and the other 11 finalists will attend the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals Spring Leadership Conference in March in Osage Beach. At the culmination of the conference, one of the principals will be selected to represent Missouri at the national level.

Worship Time
Gathering to Worship at Eagle Creek Church Tell us a bit about your church. We are one church in three different locations. We are a “come-as-you-are” church where people from all walks of life feel welcome. We want our worship environment to be relevant to what people experience in other venues so the music is a bit louder, we have a concert style worship experience and we preach practical Biblical messages that everyone can apply in their everyday lives. Our mission is to empower people to become all that God has created them to be. What are some of the missions you are involved with? We serve our city all year in many different ways through what we call Servolution, we financially support various missionaries around the world and all of our locations partner with a team in Guatemala every other year. Tell us about some of your programs. We have a high-energy and exciting Awana program every Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. for kids ages 4-6th grade, a great Elevate ministry for teens in 7th -12th grade on Wednesday’s at 7 p.m. and offer all different kinds of community groups throughout the week such as RE-
The dog house never felt so good.
FIT classes, Bible study groups, Divorce Care, homeschool groups and more. What can people expect when visiting your church? We pride ourselves on being one of the friendliest churches that make people feel welcome right when they drive onto our parking lot. We have a casual dress environment and want to create a concert-type music environment where people get to have a full experience. Our services last just 65 minutes. Our music style is relevant to what you would hear on the radio and we push ourselves in being creative with our worship services so people leave feeling excited about being a part of something that is bigger than themselves. Wherever you are in your faith journey, we want our local community to be a safe place where you and your family can grow closer to God. We have an amazing kids ministry for our families that we call KidVenture that kids leave wanting to bring their friends back. They don’t just sit and listen. We allow the kids to participate and get excited about Jesus. We are also excited that we just purchased our first piece of property right
on 291 highway where we will be building a new facility in the future. It’s just over 17 acres and will allow us to do so much more for our families here in Lee’s Summit. Do you know a local community of faith we should consider for a spotlight? Email KMathewson@ LifestylePubs.com for details. There is no charge for this service.

Tales From Suburbia WRITTEN BY BRANDI HAAS 235 PAGES CUP OF TEA BOOKS
B
randi Haas of Lee’s Summit is no domestic goddess. She’ll tell you that motherhood is probably the hardest gig in the universe. “The pay is horrible, the wardrobe is pathetic, and your boss (although utterly adorable) is usually a tyrant.” This quote illustrates the witty humor of the debut book by Haas, entitled Tales From Suburbia: You Don’t Have To Be Crazy To Live Here, But It Helps. The book debuted last month by Cup of Tea Books, an imprint of PageSpring Pub-

lishing. It contains original material based upon the popular blog by Haas, TalesFromSuburbia.com, which quickly gained more than 10,000 Facebook fans in 2014 after its initial launch in late 2013. The blog is estimated to have 25,000 readers. Haas’ writing centers around her life as a stay-at-home mother, wife and bit of a troublemaker with the PTA. A former English teacher and native of California, she has made her home in Lee’s Summit for the past six years. Many of the short stories in the book
focus on Haas’ experiences as the wife of a doctor and mother of a seven-year-old daughter, who like Haas, likes to speak her mind and creates many humorous moments that most parents can relate to in their own lives. Tales From Suburbia is available online as an ebook via Amazon.com or as a printed soft copy. It contains more than 80 stories. The ebook is also online with B&N.com and KoboBooks.com.

Finding Her Heart’s Desire LOCAL WOMAN’S LOVE OF THE WIZARD OF OZ LEADS TO A LIFETIME OF COLLECTING JOYFUL TREASURES ARTICLE KENDRA MATHEWSON | PHOTOGRAPHY MCKENNA MATHEWSON
“I’ve learned … that if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I shouldn’t look any farther than my own back yard.” –Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz
B
ack in the “olden days” when movies only played on television once a year, and you couldn’t even record them, the wonderful Wizard of Oz film captivated the 9-year-old Colette Page. After nearly a lifetime building a compilation of movie collectibles, she really doesn’t have to look further than her own backyard to find her heart’s desire. Actually, she keeps her heart’s desire (a collection of more than 300 Wizard of Oz items, not to mention 200 Christmas ornaments) in a dedicated room upstairs in her home (not in the backyard). Painted a delightful emerald green with rainbow-colored curtains, the Ozfilled room brings her delight. That delight began in childhood after seeing the movie. “I remember watching the movie once a year and trying to remember everything so we could play act it in the backyard with neighbors and cousins,” Page recalls. “I was always Dorothy.” She’s seen the movie about 30 times, and seen versions of the story in the theatre, ballet and on ice with skaters. Page loves the simple message of the movie. 44
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2015
“I think the midwestern concept was so special because it was about where we lived,” she explains. “Dorothy was a plain farm girl, she just made all those really cool friends and found her heart’s desire, which was her family. I was always about family.” Her favorite line from the movie is also found on the entry wall of her home: “A heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others.” –The Wizard of Oz As a collector she enjoys the pursuit. “I’m always anxious to find that something that I might not have, it’s a challenge to find something. I like thrift and antique stores, and it’s also fun to see what’s coming out new.” She is a member of a Wizard of Oz collectors Facebook group, where a post about her rotating themed Christmas tree got 500 likes. Her prized possession is her collection of 3’-tall, hand-made dolls crafted by Virginia Turner. The first purchase she made was a collection of plates from Hallmark. Her husband, Stuart, fully supports her and
enjoys buying things for her collection because he knows she’ll always appreciate them. Page’s collection includes a Helzberg charm bracelet, a poster with the entire book printed on it, several doll collections including Marie Osmond and Adora baby dolls, mohair teddy bears, cookie jars, multiple beanie-type collections, games, figurines including Jim Shore pieces, the entire book collection, purses, Jack in the boxes, nutrackers, and more. Of course Page has her own Dorothy costume and sometimes
wears it for Halloween. The Kansas City Star printed a picture of her in it from a Guinness Book of World records event. “I get a lot of pleasure out of people who are interested in seeing my collection, and a lot of enjoyment having it around me,” she says. “I live in a little dream world sometimes. I enjoy having it in a dedicated room where I can see it all displayed. It’s just something that never has an end.” Clearly there is no place like home for Colette Page.

Business Licenses in Lee’s Summit O
ne simple piece of paper opens the door to a variety of business opportunities in Lee’s Summit – and that’s a business license. More than 4,000 companies are licensed to do business in Lee’s Summit and each of them has walked through the process of applying for a business license inside City Hall. But what may not be known is the “why” factor. Why must a business obtain and pay for a license? In short, the process provides a level of public protection to consumers by ensuring that the business complies with all requirements of the City – whether it is a food service establishment with health related regulations or a contractor ensuring competency and insurance requirements are met. It is always a good practice to check to ensure that prior to engaging in a business related transaction, that the business is properly licensed to conduct business within the City. Business licensing also provides valuable economic development information about the numbers and types of businesses around town. The City requires a business license of anyone that conducts business in Lee’s Summit or has a business location with the City. In the past, the business license fee varied based on the type of business and number of employees within the business. Under the new system (adopted in April 2014) the business license fee is $50 regardless of the type of business or number of employees. For contractors who construct or renovate buildings or install or service mechanical, electrical or plumbing systems - obtaining a business license is a little more complex. For these contractors to be issued a business license, they must first obtain a “contractor license” at a cost of an additional $25 per contractor specialty. The requirement for these types of contractors to obtain a “contractor license” was put in place as a mechanism to help the City and the public verify that they are competent in their field of work and are properly insured. The fees for business and contractor licenses are not meant to be a revenue generator for the City. They simply cover the costs of administration and support as well as the systems and technology needed to maintain all the licensing information. This is the first year of the fee restructuring, which was done to simplify the process and provide a flat rate to all industries, regardless of size and number of employees. The trouble-free, one-sheet business license application collects basic information and also asks which category your business would fall under. The categories include: animal services, auto body/repair/car wash, auto sales, bail bonds, banks/credit unions/ financial companies, contractors (Class A, B, C, D and other), day

care providers, drinking establishments, funeral homes, gas station/convenience, grocers, hospitals/nursing homes/retirement homes, insurance, IT, landscaping/mowing, liquor store, manufacturing, massage therapy, hotel/motel, nursery/greenhouse, pay day loans, precious metal dealer/pawn, real estate rental/leasing, recreation, rental/leasing, restaurant/food service, retail, school (for profit), service/service with retail sales, special events, telephone call center, tow service, transportation, vending, waste management/recycling and wholesale sales. Additional licensing provisions exist for certain contractors, massage therapy and retail sales. City Hall routinely receives requests for business information in Lee’s Summit and the Development Center is in the process of converting business licensing software to a new system to better serve the public. Once the new system is in place, the City is hoping to make business license searches available to the public through its website and be better equipped to report on information related to economic development missions and those wishing to find information out about doing business in Lee’s Summit. Business licenses are required to be renewed on an annual basis. For more information on business licenses, call 816.969.1220 or visit CityOfLS.net. John Beaudoin is the Economic Development Communication Director for the City of Lee’s Summit. To reach him, e-mail john.beaudoin@cityofls.net or call 816.969.1028.

Driver's Notebook
The Honda Fit Shines in Urban Settings ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
H
onda’s tiny Fit is an urban outfitter because it is so at home in the confines of the city. It slides easily into parking spaces, returns better than 30 miles per gallon in the city and it can carry four people or a decent amount of cargo. Key to the petite people mover is the tall roof that enables an upright seating position and a split-folding back seat that drops flat in one move to create a generous cargo space with an almost flat floor. The front seats were excellent. They hit me in all the right places, had firm support and are heated on the top EX-L. With the back seat down and the front passenger seat folded, there is room for an item up to seven feet long. The high roof also makes it easy to get in and out but that’s something that older folks will appreciate more than young buyers. The 2015’s 99.6-inch wheelbase is a little over 1 inch longer than the previous model. Rear seat legroom is improved by 4.8 inches and overall passenger volume is up by 4.9 cubic feet. That’s pretty remarkable considering the car is 1.6 inches shorter overall. Prices range from $15,525 for an LX to $20,800 for the EX-L with Navigation. The Fit is more than just a practical box. The 1.5-liter engine has
48
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2015
been tweaked to develop 130 horsepower and it is mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT (continuously variable) automatic transmission. The manual is available only on the LX and EX. The CVT is the transmission most buyers will choose, and it is the one that gets the best fuel economy. An LX with the CVT has a highway mileage rating of 41 miles per gallon. I drove an EX-L with Navigation and it was rated at 32 mpg in town and 38 mpg on the highway. I averaged 36.8 mpg with quite a bit of freeway driving. The CVT is finding its way into most Honda products because of its efficiency but the one in the Fit was less enjoyable than other Hondas I have tried. Step hard into the throttle from a stop, such as pulling out into a busy street, and the Fit leaps forward, almost too quickly, and the lunge is accompanied by a lot of engine noise. The lack of shifting means it takes a while for the engine to calm down. I would prefer the manual transmission but it is not available on the upper models. The Fit has a fair amount of wind and road noise on the freeway and the ride is pretty firm. I don’t mind a firm ride but I can understand why someone would prefer a bit more suppleness.
My real unease comes from the new entertainment system. Everything is controlled with a 7-inch touchscreen or with controls on the steering wheel. Radio presets are not visible, for example, and tuning in a new station is not as simple as twisting a knob. Bluetooth connection to your smartphone is standard, and if you have an iPhone you can ask Siri questions through the built-in microphone. Honda’s Lane Watch is a small camera under the right outside mirror. When you put on the turn signal it shows a side view on the center LCD screen. Very handy for changing lanes or seeing if a bicycle has pulled alongside before you make a right turn. I would love to have one on the left side, too. Price: The base price of the test car was $20,800. Destination charges brought the sticker price to $21,590. Warranty: Three years or 36,000 miles with a five-year, 60,000mile powertrain warranty. Point: The redesigned Fit offers a slightly bigger interior without growing larger overall. The engine now has 130 horsepower and a CVT is the standard automatic. Front seats are excellent as is fuel economy. Counterpoint: It takes time to get used to the CVT. Wind, road and engine noise are notable. The interior has quite a few hard plastic surfaces. The ride is firm and I don’t like the lack of knobs on the entertainment system. You can reach Tom Strongman at TStrongman@gmail.com.

10 Things You Always Wondered About Those Little BlueTaxis Y
ou can’t miss them when you are driving around town. The spunky royal blue cars stand out and seem to be out and about at all hours of the day. We wondered, and so we asked. 1. What prompted you to start the 10/10 service? The “Devil” made us do it – The “Devil” is a well-known customer of many Jackson County establishments. There was always a concern that he be driven home safely. Since there weren’t any cabs available in the market, a designated driver always took the responsibility, whether they wanted to or not. The idea for 10/10 Taxi™ started from that simple, but serious need. 2. What does 10/10 stand for? Whenever we asked local customers if they would use a taxicab service, we were always asked the same two questions; How much will it cost? How long will I have to wait? The answer to those questions formed our name. $10 for up to 5 miles. Service within 10 minutes. 3. When did the first blue taxi hit the streets of Kansas City? Service was launched with five taxicabs
50
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2015
in September 2010. The initial service area was a circle with a two-mile radius centered at the intersection of I-435 & Metcalf. 4. How do I get a ride? Customers can order a 10/10 Taxi™ three ways: • To speak to a dispatcher, call 913.647.0010. • Thru our app zTrip - download in the App Store or Google Play. Ztrip.com. • To text for a pick-up, text 913.534.TAXI. Simply text your pick-up street address; i.e., 1234 Main St. Using a sophisticated GPS computerized dispatching system, the order is transferred to the nearest 10/10 Taxi™. Fares are $10 for up to 5 miles, plus $2 for each mile in excess of 5 miles. 5. What areas does 10/10 Taxi™ serve? Our taxicabs are available in all parts of Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. We recently added service to Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs. 6. Are the taxis available 24 hours a day? We are available 24/7/365. There is never an extra charge for late night or weekend service.
7. It seems like we see these little blue cars all over town. How many taxis are in your fleet? From our initial fleet of 5 taxicabs, we now offer more than 135 vehicles. 8. We’ve seen a pink 10/10 taxi as well. What’s the story behind that colorful car? Our company has a long history of community involvement. One of our most visible commitments is our partnership with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Each time a passenger takes a trip in one of our three pink cabs, we donate $1 of the fare to BCRF. 9. Is 10/10 a franchise or something unique to our town? We are a division of Kansas City Transportation Group, the Midwest’s largest ground transportation provider. KCTG operates Yellow Cab, SuperShuttle, Carey Limousine, The KC Strip Trolley and many other transportation services in the metropolitan area. In 2013 we initiated 10/10 service in suburban Minneapolis and the suburbs of Austin, Texas. In March 2014 we launched in Orlando. 10. Can people buy 10/10 gift certificates for their family members who no longer drive? Yes

Parting Thoughts
Out with the Old, In with the Fun WORDS HEATHER TRENT BEERS
W
hen the old year flips the page and turns the reigns over to the New Year, I always feel like I’m perched in a Ferris wheel, high atop the city landscape. Behind me are the joys and struggles of the previous year. Before me stretches the unsullied landscape of the coming 365 days. Some things will darken or brighten the landscape because of others’ choices, but many things will come from what I choose. So why is it that every year I choose to beat myself into submission with horrible goals like Eat Only Tasteless Things So I Lose Interest In Eating (a.k.a., lose weight) or Spend Incredible Amounts of Money Letting Other People Hurt Me So I Don’t Feel Guilty (a.k.a., join a gym and exercise)? How come my first inclination at the sight of this unblemished landscape is not to celebrate and rejoice but to bark rules at myself? Rules I will inevitably break within 32 hours because they are so unpalatable. Over coffee one morning, I asked my husband Dennis what he thought about resolutions. “To tell you the truth,” he said. “I think we should have more fun.” I gasped. “But what about my weight-loss goal?” “Was it on your list last year?” he asked. “Of course.” It’s been on my list every year since fourth grade. “And did you lose weight?” I answered with my very best Evil Eye Stare. “I’ll take that as a No,” he said. “So let’s try something different.” “But I hate to give up my goal,” I whined. “You wouldn’t be giving up your goal. You’ll just make having fun more of a priority.”
I finally agreed. After some discussion, we decided that our New Year’s resolution would be to eat at one new restaurant every month. The results? I didn’t lose a single pound. But I did have tons of fun, got to know my city better, tried lots of great food and got to know my husband better as well. Maybe our idea of fun is too tame for you. Or maybe you don’t want to spend any money. Fine. Dust off your imagination and custom-fit fun to fit your parameters. Just do SOMETHING. Most people choose one of two things with resolutions: They either choose the lazy way out by planning to do nothing (I mean, it’s just another string of 365 days, right?), or they look at last year’s resolutions and determine, “OK, this year I really WILL do all the stuff on my list!” (You know the list I mean. It’s the one that says Lose Weight, Exercise More, Be Nicer, Quit Smoking, yada yada yada.) I’m not saying those things are bad. I’m just proposing that this year you trade in your resolutions for a REVOLUTION. Because what if doing more of what you love energizes you to happily do the things you need to? It could happen. This year, we already have three trips planned. And I want to spot more wildlife. In real life. Not on TV. I even bought binoculars. What will YOU do? Will you be lazy with your goals and just copy and paste from last year? Come on. Join the revolution. I dare you to be brave: Have more fun.
