It takes guts to be screened for colorectal cancer, the No. 2 cause of cancer death in the United States. Often associated with people over age 50, colorectal cancer affects the young as well.
Trust your gut. If you experience a change in bowel habits, talk with your doctor. Early detection saves lives by identifying changes in the colon and rectum before they become cancerous, when they are easily treatable. If you’re 50 or over, get screened for colorectal cancer regularly and learn your risk factors. If you need treatment, NCI-designated Cancer Centers like The University of Kansas Cancer Center provide better outcomes than other centers. Don’t rely on hindsight. Reduce your risk factors with: • Physical activity • Weight control • Reduced alcohol consumption • No smoking Learn more at kucancercenter.org/gutcheck or 913-588-1227.

Lucky for Us, the Arts Surround Us Aren’t we fortunate to live in a community that values the arts? If one were to consult a metro-wide arts calendar, there’s no doubt in my mind that nearly every day of the year would offer multiple options. From high school productions that are so impressive they bear little resemblance to the high school productions of my youth, to community theaters, local symphonies, dance groups, community bands and choirs, art gallery events. Add this to the public art popping up around us and it is clear that our town has a flourishing art scene. And this doesn’t even begin to include the professional, downtown Kansas City art and festival opportunities less than a 30-minute drive away. I started this job nearly six years ago and at that time had no idea how many local art groups were in our community. And until we started spotlighting local artists in our publication, I was oblivious as to how many talented artists call our suburbs home. And is it just me, or has the arrival of the Kauffman Center reignited our passion for great performances and attracted some really big names to KC? I doubt I’m alone when I say that if busy schedules weren’t an obstacle, I think I could find something to attract me to the Kauffman Center every month. Just the other night, a friend and I went to see The Women Of Lockerbie at one of our local high schools. We called it dinner and a show on a dime and it was a great night. If you aren’t aware of what’s being produced on the stages of our local high schools, community colleges and community theaters, I encourage you to start surfing the web and take a look. And if you are out of ideas for gifts for those out-of-town family members who visit Kansas City regularly, might I suggest tickets to something at that amazing shellshaped performing arts center downtown. While that dinner and a show were more than a few dimes, the dinner and show we enjoyed with our visiting Chicago relatives, their Christmas gift from us, made for a most memorable night for all.

Around Town LOCAL TEAMS ARE FINALISTS IN CYBERPATRIOT COMPETITION Students from two Lee’s Summit schools recently advanced to the finalist level in the CyberPatriot National Finals Competition. Two teams are from Lee’s Summit North, CyberBroncos and CyberWarriors. One team, Team Sudo, is from Summit Technology Academy. The LSNHS teams are coached by Lt. Col. John Deese of the LSNHS Air Force Junior ROTC program. The Summit Tech team is coached by Lisa Oyler, STA teacher. The three local teams are among just 28 teams from throughout the nation qualifying for the national finals. Students qualifying for the finals will travel all-expenses-paid to Washington, D.C., in March to compete for the title of national champion, scholarships and other recognition. CyberPatriot, an education initiative established by the Air Force Association and presented by the Northrop Grumman Foundation, is a one-of-a-kind cyber defense competition designed to inspire students toward futures in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
LEE’S SUMMIT’S MAGIC TREE This year’s Lee’s Summit Magic Tree was a glowing success. The beauty of a tree in the middle of a field with thousands of Christmas lights is one thing, but the joy and generosity was fantastic to be a part of. First-time visitors are amazed at how awesome the tree looks from the highway
when they drive past it each evening. Inevitably, that statement is followed by commentary on how much cooler it is to experience up close as they inspect the intricately woven strands of more than 12,000 Christmas lights. Their partnership with Lee’s Summit Social Services proved to be a fantastic opportunity to support the neighbors that Lee’s Summit Magic Tree visitors really got behind. They collected enough food and monetary donations to feed more than 200 families for an entire week, each. The Magic Tree website and social media channels continue to be flooded by notes of thanks, pictures of smiling families, testimonials and suggestions to make the Lee’s Summit Magic Tree even better next year.
A group of Lee’s Summit R-7 School District registered nurses recently donated their time to help families of children at Children’s Mercy Hospital. The school nurses provided, prepared and served dinner for more than 60 family members in the hospital’s Ronald McDonald Room. Several of the families have been at the Kansas City hospital for weeks or even months while their children receive treatment. Some of the participating nurses included Rebecca Litton, Christy Weber, Cheryl Orr, Kari Frayling, Helen Enright and Amy Wald. For information about volunteering at the Ronald McDonald Room, visit VolunteerMark.com.

While both Tilghman and Zonno are employed at Rockhill Orthopedic Specialists, they will carry out their most complex surgeries at Saint Luke’s Surgicenter in Lee’s Summit. Both doctors bring extensive experience in their fields and will be a vital asset within the community. He also has an affinity for helping those in the performing arts field and hopes to focus on actors, dancers, singers and instrumentalists. Zonno brings a wealth of knowledge and experience about orthopedic foot and ankle surgery, sports medicine and general orthopedic surgery. With his extensive training, Dr. Zonno accepts patients suffering from all severities of foot and ankle problems, including fractures, sports-related injuries, diabetic complications and post-traumatic reconstruction.
The Lee’s Summit Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5789 recently honored Lee’s Summit R-7 teachers for their efforts in the area of citizenship education. Terri Sheets, a teacher at Meadow Lane Elementary, and Lawrence Whittlesey, a teacher at Lee’s Summit West High School, received the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. Cheryl McLaughlin, a teacher at Lee’s Summit Elementary, was also honored for her contributions to citizenship. Whittlesey is in the industrial technology department and teaches computer-assisted drafting, engineering design, civil engineering and architecture. A former Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer, the LSWHS teacher was praised for fostering a human connection with each student and seeking to have a positive influence in their lives while also helping the community, his fellow teachers and his students. Sheets was recognized for her dedication to men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Services. Each year, she helps the school organize an assembly recognizing service men and woman on
Veterans Day. The assembly includes current service men and women as well as veterans and is a significant event in the Lee’s Summit community. McLaughlin was recognized for helping students in the elementary gifted program plan and implement a re-dedication of a memorial recognizing soldiers from Lee’s Summit High School who died during World War I. Mrs. McLaughlin and the students worked to involve members of the community in restoration of the memorial as well as a re-dedication ceremony held on Veterans Day 2014.

Around Town OFF CENTER THEATRE TO BECOME MUSICAL THEATER HERITAGE Musical Theater Heritage (MTH), the Kansas City professional theater company specializing in Musical Theater productions, has signed an exclusive lease to occupy the 243-seat Off Center Theatre on Level 3 of the Crown Center Shops. MTH, with its large casts and live music has become a local theater favorite for its intimate and engaging concert-style productions of book musicals, and cabaret shows. “We’ve enjoyed a tremendous relationship with MTH for many years,” says Zahid Nana, Crown Center’s vice president of marketing and hospitality. “It’s been exciting to watch them grow, and we’re looking forward to the wonderful entertainment they’ll continue to bring to Crown Center.” MTH is quite ready for this giant step. Last year they provided employment for 289 actors, singers and theater technicians, bringing 11,500 theatergoers to Crown Center. Having a permanent home will certainly be a way for them to continue their phenomenal growth.
SAVE THE BARNS AT NEW LONGVIEW Longview Farms holds a treasured place in Lee’s Summit’s history, and the investments made to develop the New Longview community have helped preserve pieces of that important and beautiful past. Not all of the buildings of the farm have been restored, and though plans were made for that to happen, the economy and other factors have put those barns at risk of being demolished. A group of concerned citizens has formed to try to find a way to conserve the barns and other buildings in that area. “Longview Farm and its historic structures are clearly the most historically and architecturally significant properties in our community,” says Fred Grogan. “We must do everything possible as a community to insure that they are preserved in a setting that enhances their unique charm and continues the unique legacy of Longview.” To learn more about preserving the barns and other remaining historic structures of Longview Farm, email info@savethebarns. org or visit SaveTheBarns.org. 16

Get Stuffed at Bleu Burger ARTICLE SHARMIN MEADOWS | PHOTOGRAPHY MCKENNA MATHEWSON
B
urger joints come and go but Bleu Burger is here to stay as it is on the cutting edge of the next big thing featuring a menu of stuffed burgers. Located at 320 Southwest Blue Parkway, the for-mer home of Bullfrogs Bars and Grill has been transformed into a family-friendly venue where thick and juicy burgers are stuffed with a variety ingredients that will get your taste buds buz-zing. Whether you opt for the Mediterranean burger filled with green olives, red onion, artichokes, pepperoni and feta cheese, the Cali burger, filled with avocado, red onion, poblano chilies, bacon and cheddar cheese, or the Black and Bleu burger stuffed with bleu cheese and blackened in a spicy Cajun rub, your burger will be cooked medium well to seal in all the ingredients. Each burger is also paired with a complimenting bun that might include mulit-grain, salted pretzel, ciabatta, egg, jalapeno and more. The slogan on the server’s t-shirts reads “Get stuffed” and that is exactly what happened when I had lunch there with a friend. I chose the Figgy Burger ($11) stuffed with dried dates, figs and goat cheese. The saltiness of the goat cheese paired with the sweetness of the figs and dates was a perfect combination. This burger is topped with fried onion straws and mixed greens which added even more flavor. My friend had the Buffalo burger ($10.50), which was an amazing combination of bacon, bleu cheese and buffalo sauce in the middle. The Buffalo Burger is truly a piece of work and is even topped with a stalk of celery on skewer to complete the “buffalo” ex-perience. All burgers come with your choice of skinny fries or sweet potato tots, so we ordered one of each. I love sweet potatoes but in this case the crispy skinny fries won over the tots for the best sidekick to my burger. Other stuffed burgers include a Baja Burger (cheddar cheese, onions and cilantro) and the All American stuffed with what else but American cheese. The next one on my list to try is the Caprese Burger which is stuffed with fresh mozzarella and sun-dried tomatoes. There are also stuffed turkey burgers and a featured burger of the week. Meatless options include a build-your-own mac and cheese that is a combination of six cheeses with a variety of vegetable and protein options. There is also hummus, a variety of baked flat-breads and several salads. For those not wanting a stuffed burger, regular burgers are available as well as a kid-friendly menu. The decor is fun with bright blue walls and variety of different colored doors placed randomly around the space. The patio has a built in fireplace, which is the perfect place to enjoy one of the many happy hour specials that Bleu Burger offers. Live music, food and drink specials and in-formation about the burger of the week can be found on their Facebook page. Our service was friendly, the concept is fun and the food was very good. I will definitely go back to get “stuffed” again soon.
Hot Spot reviews are based on an unannounced visit and the meal is paid for by Lifestyle Publications. 20

What Does 2015 Hold in Store for Investors? IF YOU’RE AN INVESTOR, YOU PROBABLY HAD A PRETTY GOOD YEAR IN 2014. BUT WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2015?
I
t’s essentially impossible to make precise predictions about the performance of the financial markets — but it is possible to identify those economic conditions and market forces that may help shape the outcomes in the investment world for 2015. And by paying close attention to these conditions and forces, you can gain some valuable insights as to what investment moves might make sense for you. HERE ARE A FEW OF THESE MOVES TO CONSIDER: • CONSIDER ADDING STOCKS.
With stock prices having climbed higher and higher for more than five years, you might be wondering if it’s time to scale back on your ownership of equities. After all, no “bull” market lasts forever. Still, some factors point to continued strength for stocks over the long term. First, we are seeing signs of improving economic growth; employment gains and low oil prices are giving consumers more confidence, leading to a boost in spending. Second, corporate earnings —a key driver of stock prices — were quite strong in the second half of 2014, and companies appear poised to show more good results in 2015. And third, stocks — at least, large-company stocks — are still reasonably valued, as measured by their price-to-earnings ratios (P/E). Given these factors, you might want to think about adding quality stocks to your holdings — assuming, of course, that these stocks can help meet your needs for a balanced portfolio. And be aware that even the most favorable conditions can’t assure a continued run-up in stock prices. • PREPARE FOR RISING INTEREST RATES.
For several years, interest rates have been at, or near, historical lows. Given the strengthening economy, and the decreased need for stimulus, the Federal Reserve may well raise short-term interest rates in 2015, perhaps as early as this summer. But long-term rates may start rising even before then, so you may want to take a close look at your bonds and other fixed-rate investments. As you probably know, when interest rates rise, the value of existing bonds typically falls, because investors won’t pay full price for your bonds when they can get newly issued ones that pay higher rates. One way to combat the effects of rising rates is to build a “ladder” consisting of short-, intermediate- and long-term bonds. 22

• LOOK FOR INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES ABROAD.
Although economic growth has been slow in parts of the world, especially China, many countries have now initiated policies to spur economic growth. These actions can create opportunities for international equity investments. The world of global investing can be complex, though, so before taking action, you may want to consult with a financial professional. There are no guarantees, but by following the above suggestions, you may be able to take advantage of what looks to be a fairly favorable investment environment for 2015. While you should make most of your investment decisions based on long-term considerations, it’s always a good idea to be attuned to what’s happening in the world around you — and to respond appropriately. Investing in stocks involves risks. The value of your shares will fluctuate and you may lose money. Special risks are inherent to international investing, including those related to currency fluctuations and foreign political and economic events.

Camp Encourage WHERE KIDS ARE INSPIRED TOWARD COURAGE, SPIRIT AND CONFIDENCE ARTICLE SHERI WILLS THOMPSON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
he name is perfect. Camp Encourage—a special place where children ages 8-18 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) grow in courage, experience activities with spirit, and exhibit confidence they never knew they had. Each summer for two weeks, Tall Oaks Camp and Conference Center in Linwood, Kan., welcomes these campers, many of whom have never been away from home, or even away from a parent for any length of time. Upon arrival, first-time campers are nervous, but they are greeted by enthusiastic and caring volunteers whose goal is to make them feel safe, loved, accepted and affirmed. Parents, too, feel some apprehension about leaving their child, but along with the nervousness is the deep hope that this will be an amazing experience for them. When the kids return at the end of the week, parents see that it was not only a wonderful experience, but for many campers, it was life-changing. Children with ASD are averse to change. Camp is full of new activities, new people and new surroundings. It takes very special people to ensure that campers have a safe but adventurous time. Close to 200 volunteers are needed for the two four-day sessions. Counselors work directly with campers and stay with them in the cabins overnight. Activity facilitators plan and lead activities such as art, music, exercise classes and campfires. The medical staff assists with medical needs and distribute medications. Volunteer staff includes roles such as photographer and carnival helpers. Peer models are a unique feature of Camp Encourage. Students ages 8-18 who are not on the autism spectrum attend as campers. After training, peer models experience all of the camp activities while also being role models. More importantly, they learn to accept and appreciate kids their own age who are different from themselves. Often, these relationships turn into friendships that continue long after camp concludes. One peer model drove from Warrensburg to Springfield, Mo., to be a camper’s prom date. Along with having fun, campers gain skills that change their lives. Being away from home, showering alone, and simply trying new things give a child more confidence. This affects the way they perform in school, interact with family, and socialize with their peers. Parents watching the slide show at the end of the week are struck by the pictures of their kid doing “normal” kid things. Parents see their child smiling, happy, and already talking about going back to camp next year. “Every year, he will apply. This is the first camp that he just loves. All of the others, there was something he did not like. Thanks for having a great place for my son!”—Parent Camp Encourage is a not-for-profit organization with a board of directors made up of business men and woman and parents. Its CONTINUED >

co-founders, Kaye Otten, Ph. D., and Kelly Tebbenkamp Lee, M.S.Ed., both have the educational background, camp leadership experience, and heart for children with ASD. Their passion to provide a truly wonderful experience for these kids is evident. They, along with board members and volunteers, spend 15,000 hours a year to plan and execute two sessions of camp each summer. They also work on fundraising—their signature event each fall spotlights a documentary based on a camp story and includes a silent and/or live auction. Fundraising events are important since 90 percent of campers need partial or full scholarships. Peer models may also receive scholarships. Camp Encourage is growing. Each year, applications are received in January and campers are chosen by lottery; 45 campers and 18 peer models attend each session. Those numbers mean that many applicants do not get to attend, so it is a dream of Camp Encourage staff to open a third session by 2017. People wishing to learn more, volunteer or donate to Camp Encourage can do so at CampEncourage.org.

A Region of Riches HOW KANSAS CITY’S ARTS SCENE CAN ADD WEALTH TO YOUR COMMUNITY AND YOUR WEEKENDS
Keep adding up the artsy treasures Kansas City has to offer and you ARTICLE BECKY BLADES get a combination of diverse PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED cow town, one weekend at a time riches unmatched by hat are we doing tothe word is getting out about Kan“W night?” asked my out-ofsas City. It’s making news and making any city under town guests. some great lists: The Coolest Cities in The Phoenix couple had made their first America, 20 Cities You Must Visit in Your four million trip to Kansas City to see the internationally 20s, and America’s Most Underrated Cities for people. Millennials, to name a few. But to get the true piccelebrated Plains Indian exhibition at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. I could tell they thought they had seen the best Kansas City had to offer. “What kind of a mood are you in?” I asked. We had already walked for hours around the museum, through its sculpture gardens and on to the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. They were in the mood for sitting. “Choose a seat,” I said. “Will it be the Kauffman Performing Arts Center with our world-class symphony or the corner table in the Blue Room jazz club in the 18th & Vine historic district? Or we could settle into an old sofa and watch an edgy new play at the Living Room Theater.” My husband piped in, “How about watching Hands On A Hardbody?” at the Unicorn Theater?” The fun musical won out over Tchaikovsky and jazz, and we ended a dazzling day with smiles on our faces. Driving our friends to the airport on Sunday, they gushed about our weekend and debated their favorite parts. Our favorite part was easy: the surprise of our guests as they discovered our city’s cultural riches – and their promise to never again call Kansas City a “flyover town.” While some still come here expecting a sleepy, backwards 28

ture of this arty, five-county metro, look at some other less-hyped lists. For example, did you know Kansas City shows up on the SOB list? It’s not what you think: SOB stands for Symphony, Opera and Ballet. Sustaining resident companies of just one or two of these classic arts institutions requires serious cultural muscle. While other cities struggle to keep their SOB institutions alive, ours are financially stable, collaborative and at the top of their games. Cities that have all three, as Kansas City does, are on a very short list of only about 15 cities. Big-league arts assets are uncommon for a city our size. Consider this: The five-county area that makes up the Kansas City metropolitan market has a population of nearly two million people, making our metro the 30th size market. So to be one of 15 SOB cities means we support arts with smaller audiences and fewer financial resources than others on the list. But these highbrow riches are only part of what thrives here. Look at the opposite end of the spectrum, the edgy, innovative side of performance art, and you’ll again see our metro playing at the top. For example, Kansas City is on a growing list of U.S. cities with Fringe Festivals. In the KC Fringe, hundreds of independent,
unjuried performances over 10 days in July range from Shakespeare, to comedy, to campy burlesque. Kansas City was one of the first and smallest cities to launch a Fringe Festival, and today it’s a leader, growing at more than15 percent a year. If you overlay SOB cities with Fringe Festival cities, you’ll get a list of only nine or ten. But don’t stop there. Overlay that list with Shakespeare festivals, jazz and blues festivals, folk and contemporary music festivals. Did you know K.C.’s exploding Middle of the Map Fest is being compared to the early days of Austin’s South by Southwest? And that we are home to the International Folk Alliance? Keep going. Overlay our world-class visual arts venues, arts education institutions, and professional theater companies. Overlay thousands of individual artists, galleries, and the ecosystem they create in dozens of cities within our city. Keep adding up the artsy treasures and you get a combination of diverse riches unmatched by any city under four million peo-
ple. If only there were a balance sheet to tally and value such things, many believe Kansas City would best even the largest cities in America. This is why we can dare to call the Kansas City region ‘America’s Creative Crossroads.’ It’s why civic leaders are working together to make sure our arts riches benefit the entire five-county region. It’s why ArtsKC, the regional arts council, is leading the creation of the Regional Cultural Plan, OneArtsKC, to map an even more arts-rich future. We all know that assets are no fun sitting on a list or a balance sheet. Engaging in the arts is fun, but it also impacts other assets like education, cross-community collaboration and business innovation. As the world is starting to get the word about Kansas City, let’s make sure we enjoy the treasures in our own back yard. Take your guests, take your kids, and take yourself out for the weekend. The arts are among those powerful assets that grow by using them.

World-Class Fishing: Lake Ouachita
The Ouachita River is a tributary of the great Arkansas River; dam projects over the decades on the river and some of its tributaries have created lakes for boating and fishing. Deep, clear Lake Ouachita is Arkansas’s largest lake, with more than 40,000 acres of water and nearly 700 miles of pristine shoreline, completely surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest. Anglers come from all corners of the country for world-class fishing on this mighty lake, where largemouth bass, walleye, crappie and stripers abound. Named by Bassmaster Magazine as a Top 100 Bass Lake, Lake Ouachita challenges experienced fishermen and gives newcomers a fine taste of the popular sport. Hire a guide or go it alone. Canoeing: Caddo River
Novice and experienced kayakers, canoeists and tube floaters are attracted to the scenic upper section of the Caddo River, a tributary of the Ouachita River, near Lake DeGray. Family-friendly, the
82-mile-long river is ideal for day trips along its sloping banks; gentle enough for beginners, the Caddo River is also dotted with Class I and Class II rapids along the way. The hot springs feeding the river between Caddo Gap and Glenwood are a rare sight on rivers. Rent equipment and hire an expert guide in Glenwood at Caddo River Camping and Canoe Rental—a convenient location for check-in, parking and access to river drop in. Oil Boom: Smackover and El Dorado
It’s a made-for-Hollywood story: In 1921, the tiny towns of Smackover, population 93, and neighboring El Dorado, population 4,000, were minding their own business when wildcat oil wells were discovered. By 1925 both towns swelled to more than 25,000 residents each, most vying for a piece of the lucrative oil industry. The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources in Smackover gives a well-curated glimpse into Arkansas’s fascinating role in America’s oil boom. Tour exhibits

Down the road from the museum is El Dorado, originally a farming community in the midst of cotton plantations that was transformed when oil was struck. Take a walking tour of the quaint town and see its brick-and-mortar history. Living History: Historic Washington State Park
Step back in time to the 19th century at Historic Washington on the Old Southwest Trail, where well-known historical figures such as Sam Houston and Davy Crockett stopped for a respite in this small town established on George Washington’s birthday in 1824. Savor a meal in the Williams Tavern Restaurant, originally located 10 miles from Washington and moved to the village in the 1980s. Built in 1832, it was owned by John Williams and served as a local tavern for hungry and weary 19th century travelers. History and Art: Fort Smith
Historic Fort Smith was instrumental in the relocation of Indian tribes from the Eastern United States to Oklahoma Indian Territory. The infamous Trail of Tears, where thousands of Native Americans were marched at gunpoint, ran by the Fort. Part of the Fort Smith National Historic Site, the Fort today is interpreted by the National Park Service. Another must-see historical attraction is the recreation of “Hanging Judge” Isaac Parker’s courtroom and a walking trail along the

Hop on Fort Smith’s 1926 restored electric trolley that once served as the city’s principal means of public transportation, and get a front-row seat to historic buildings and a guide’s remarks. Juxtaposed against the Fort Smith Trolley Museum is the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum, which opened in an acclaimed expansion in 2013, offering robust programming and exhibitions. Outdoor Paradise: Mount Magazine State Park
This area, which embodies 14.2 miles of trails, dramatically emulates Arkansas’s official tagline of “The Natural State.” Hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, rock-climbing and rappelling, ATV tours, hang gliding, and more are popular activities in Arkansas’s designated highest point. Hikes along Signal Hill Trail, or the Greenfield, Benefield, Mossback Ridge, or Will Apple’s Road Trails afford striking views of Bear Hollow, the Arkansas River Valley, and Blue Mountain Lake. The 34-mile-long Huckleberry Mountain Horse Trail is Mount Magazine’s only multi-use trail that extends into the adjacent Ozark National Forest and considered the best for horseback riding in the state. Choose strenuous, multi-day hikes or day hikes along the rugged terrain to enjoy the area’s serenity and solitude.

onald Ross, also known as Scribe, and wife Alisa are very unique artists. Their work is literally changing the visual landscape of many Midtown neighborhoods and metro hospitals.

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | March 2015
Scribe’s murals cover entire sides of buildings bringing color, fun and imagination to unexpected places. One features a large rabbit with purple ears and a green hat, another a slithering blue snake. As the resident artist for Children’s Mercy Hospital, Scribe’s work is making a difference. Typically, hospitals are sterile and colorless, contributing to a child’s fear when ill or injured, but add bright colored animal murals, and immediately children know they are in a place made just for kids. Instead of stark white walls they see a life-size turtle with tools on his back, fishes swimming, and floors tiled in colorful animals and fun shapes. Scribe’s work makes the environment friendly, inviting, and even happy, impacting the heart of children and their families. Scribe’s characters are both fantasy and his rendition of real animals. Rumpus the rhino appears in much of his work and represents the artist himself. As a child, Scribe lived for a time in Israel and enjoyed zoos and snorkeling in the Mediterranean. Later, during a turning point in his life, Scribe recalled his childhood passion and began drawing pictures of animals. Rhinos are large, solitary animals, that can’t see very well. Scribe, too, was alone and life was unclear. Drawing Rumpus was a way of drawing himself. Scribe continues to paint Rumpus into many of his murals. Scribe’s faith is a constant undercurrent in his work. A whale appears in one mural. To Scribe, it’s an allusion to the biblical story of Jonah, but it is art so, “It has one meaning to me but is different to someone else,” says Scribe. He wants his art to create wonder, offer escape, make people CONTINUED >

laugh, inspire imagination, and ignite inquiry, “Where is that guy going? What is he doing?” As a dad Scribe feels accountable for the art he creates. “I feel a personal responsibility to offer something clean, to not rob children of their youth. Rumpus carries a plunger sometimes, but I don’t put a gun into his hands. Murals are important to me because kids are looking at them and I don’t want to even accidentally influence them in a negative way, but also being edgy has helped me reach multiple generations.” Alisa’s art focuses on the creation of soft sculpture. Her pieces are both visual and tactile. Using a variety of colors and fabrics, some works are inspired by wildlife; others are birthed in her imagination. She takes common aspects of nature--trees, flowers, animals--and makes them come alive, complete with faces, smiles and rosy cheeks. Her Plushies, soft sculptures made to be held, are original characters, some resembling real life objects such as a tape deck. Others are straight from her imagination. Scribe and Alisa’s work can be seen all around the KC area. At the new Prairiefire shopping development in southern Overland Park, Scribe painted murals with a Kansas prairie theme for CocoBolos restaurant. Alisa’a soft sculptures can be seen at Threshing Bee. Working together, they have created a wonderful tactile mural for the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired. Using a variety of textures including vinyl, burlap, wood and plastic, their work invites hands to touch, feel and fully experience the mural whose main character is an owl Dojo Wall Fin

(because owls live mostly in darkness). Alisa also created a life-size owl costume for CCVI’s mascot whose bright green glasses and friendly smile bring smiles and giggles to children and parents alike. Recently, the pair decorated the reception area for the downtown Ronald McDonald House. Its welcoming, happy space is so important for families in crisis. Alisa’s soft sculpture creations are fun and comforting. A garden with smiling, winking flowers covers a fabric tree, while bees, leaves and pillows make the room a peaceful place. They hope when families arrive, they will feel some happiness in the midst of their difficult circumstance. Scribe loves to draw large, but he has also taken his art to a much smaller canvas. Author and illustrator of a children’s book, There’s An Octopus Under My Bed, he is currently working on another book due out in 2016, which will feature his favorite character, Rumpus. Their art has been shown across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Life is busy as they manage their public life as artists and their private life as a couple and as parents to two boys, Jonah and Elijah, who are already showing some artistic talent. “They just watch what we do,” says Alisa. How fortunate for them!” Alisa enjoys working with her husband. “He has the ability to understand how people take in art,” she says. Perhaps that is what makes their work so special: those who see it actually “take it in” and experience it. Perhaps it is also because their work makes people smile, laugh and even grow a few years younger. Whatever the reason, they will keep creating and we will keep reaping the benefits of these gifted and inspiring artists.

The Art of Serving Clients in 3D LEE’S SUMMIT VIDEO EFFECTS BUSINESS BRINGS HOLLYWOOD, AND A WHOLE LOT MORE, A LITTLE CLOSER TO HOME ARTICLE CHRISTOPHER CLARK PHOTOGRAPHY PARKER HARRISON
T
o know a little bit about Lee’s Summit businessman and 3D visual effects wiz Jim Lammers, you might first consider Archer. Sterling Archer. Archer is the James Bond-like centerpiece character of FX network’s animated yet adult-themed take on the spy genre, and he comes to life with help from an unlikely place: Lammers’ Trinity Animation 3D rendering and visual effects shop in Lee’s Summit. From offices just off Missouri 291, Lammers’ crew has created the background art on the hit series since 2009. To accommodate the far-flung locales and storylines that Archer fans know and love, Trinity Animation has conjured space stations, submarines, large portions of the cities of Monaco and Paris, World War I airfields and so much more over the show’s six seasons. Trinity is also responsible for creating a handful of the visual effects shots on the 1997 science fiction hit Starship Troopers. “But, our stock in trade is visualizing new things,” says Lammers. “Our primary work is in products and architecture clients who need a movie or some large pictures of a proposed product, or interior, or building or anything else. We can tour it, open it up, explain the features and benefits, view it from a variety of angles, watch it assemble, compare it to similar products and just about anything else that the client wants to show.” A stroll through some of Trinity’s work online (Vimeo.com/ TrinityAnimation/videos) showcases an impressive and varied array of work. From a detailed rendering of Mizzou’s Faurot Field to a realistic simulation of a proposed airport runway project, Trinity’s team uses banks of ultrafast computers and advanced software to sweat the details and bring them gloriously to life. “Our latest efforts are in the medical field, producing many animations of healthy and unhealthy body parts, and illustrating medical procedures,” says Lammers. “This type of work is much more visceral and organic than the straight lines of architecture. Our staff has really raised their skills to produce some beautiful medical visualization that is wet and alive and realistic.” Lammers grew up in south Kansas City and graduated from Center High School. After getting a degree in electrical engineering at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, he moved to Los Angeles. That area’s expensive cost of living eventually pushed him back to the Kansas City area and Lee’s Summit, where he now CONTINUED >

lives with his wife Gail, an attorney who acts as the company’s general counsel and runs Trinity’s software sales. While he enjoyed art in his younger days, Lammers started his adult life in engineering, figuring even commercial art couldn’t produce the lifestyle he wanted. But that was before he found the 3D rendering tool called Vivid. The software, he says, was “a revelation.” After he and Gail married in 1994, her career in law supported the household while he leapt into the visual effects business. Today, she runs a division of Trinity that focuses on mechanical engineering software and training. As the business grew, Lammers resisted the allure of downtown Kansas City, which has come alive in recent years largely because of the creative advertising and marketing community that’s set up shop there “For me it was more important to have the business somewhere close to my home since I would be there often, and at odd hours,” says Lammers. “Several of our employees are graduates of Lee’s Summit schools. We’ve been blessed to have such a great array of local talent when we are seeking to add artists or other employees.” The market for Trinity’s expertise is immense when you consider all the possible applications for 3D rendering and visual effects, Lammers says. Need a visual of something that’s difficult to film? Consider 3D, he says. “It may be something far away or very tiny, or it may not exist

yet. Also in some cases it is just hard to film there. For example, we have helped companies with medical and airport furniture marketing imagery because hospitals and airports are nearly impossible to gain access to for photo shoots.” Trinity Animation’s clients are local, regional and even international. Their range of work - from animated series to industrial design - underscores the firm’s broad talents. “It’s something our artists appreciate and enjoy,” says Lammers says. “They have new challenges and new styles to master all the time.”

Small Stage, Big Talent PLEASANT HILL’S BIG CREEK COUNTRY SHOW OFFERS HIGH-QUALITY, FAMILY-FRIENDLY ENTERTAINMENT AND GOOD, OLD-FASHIONED FUN ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KENDRA MATHEWSON
T
here’s a too-well-kept secret down in little ole Pleasant Hill, and it’s worth blabbing about. When the big red curtains slide open across the small stage of the historic People’s Theater downtown, they reveal some gigantic local talent. Why drive to Branson when you can find an evening of quality variety show entertainment right here in our own back yard? Honestly, I’m not really a country music fan, so when a reader raved about this place I was, shall I say, less than enthusiastic. We greatly value and trust our reader’s input, so I made a reservation and went to see for myself. And am I ever glad I did. The whole experience is like someone put my childhood in a time capsule and opens it every Saturday night. Not exactly, but the feel of the place is as close as it comes to growing up in a more innocent, simple time. The show itself is reminiscent of Lawrence Welk meets Hee Haw meets Sonny and Cher meets Ed Sullivan. Just like those old shows, Big Creek’s warm, welcoming host is Dennis Dittemore, and his wife Cindy. Both are loaded with talent themselves—vocalists, instrumentalists and overall entertainers—and they continually invite a wide range of guests to share the stage in a 2 ½ hour live production that is “country flavored” but more variety show than country music concert. “Even if you don’t like country, you can come and be entertained,”
says keyboardist Phil Hilton, whose phenomenal show tune renditions have been a highlight for 33 years. Since opening Halloween night in 1982, Big Creek Country has entertained thousands of folks with some of the finest musicians and comedians in the business. They’ve intentionally remained committed to using more local talent than big names, and have been a springboard for local talent, including X-Factor winner Tate Stevens, Nashville upand-comer Teea Goans, #1 hit songwriter Tyler Farr, Branson’s Sons of the Pioneers’ lead singer Randy Rudd and most recently KC Royals’ darling, 17-year-old Maggie Marx, who sang the national anthem during their World Series run. Fox 4 News’ Mark Alford evens joins the crew on stage to sing or emcee. “We never dreamed there’d be this kind of talent, such a top notch group of people,” Hilton marvels. Dennis graduated from the University of Kansas as a music major, and he and Debbie started performing at Union Mill Opry and the KC Opry. They met Debbie Martin when she was just 16 in 1977. Together they decided to open the show and partnered with Cindy’s parents who have been a great support ever since. The venue is part of the experience, too, and transports you back in time. Opened in 1909 and reconstructed in 1948 Art Deco style (the neon lights are 1940s and 50s original), the Peoples Theatre closed as a CONTINUED >

movie theater in 1972. The 400-chair hall feels intimate, almost like a living room, though the old velvet theater seats remind you you’re not. But, it is truly the audience I credit most for contributing that extra-special atmosphere. About 130 regulars call Big Creek Country home on Saturday nights, many for nearly all of the 30 years it’s been open. Instead of feeling like I was treading on their turf, I felt embraced and welcome. Every person sitting around me or walking by looked at me directly, smiled and said hello or shared a story. Joy and laughter abound in that room. And politeness, too. Admittedly, there was a lot of gray hair, but if you want your kids to experience a taste of a bygone era, it’s definitely worth a trip. There’s nothing cheesy about Big Creek Country Showcase. It’s a feel-good show, a nice place to come with top-notch, professional talent, a slice of history and small-town vibe. And the friendly folks who make it happen would love to have you join them. “We do this because we love it, we love our audience, and we love each other,” says Martin. “That’s what’s kept us going after all this time.”
PLAN YOUR SATURDAY AT BIG CREEK COUNTRY SHOWPLACE
They like to know folks are coming, so check out their website for what they have planned, pick your date, and then give’em a call. They’ll put you on the list for the night you want to come, and make sure you’ve got a good seat in the house. You’ll need to bring cash to pay when you get there, but tickets are only $12 each so it won’t set ya back much. Enjoy a soda, candy bar and popcorn at some very old-time prices, too. “We’ve tried to be frugal, good stewards so people can afford to come,” says long-time performer Debbie Martin. HOW OFTEN DO YOU BLOG?
I love classical music. My father opened this door to me when I was a child and it’s been my passion ever since. I am a violinist foremost, but I also play bass and guitar. I love all kinds of music, but classical music is the most rich and diverse of all forms, yet it reaches the fewest people in our culture. I started blogging to help others begin their classical journey.

his year, the whole community is invited to join in Metropolitan Community College – Longview’s Common Read and attend a Convocation discussion of author Rebecca Skloot’s book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” The writer tells the true story of a poor tobacco farmer, Lacks, whose cancer cells led to the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping and other medical breakthroughs - all without Lacks’ knowledge or compensation. The Common Read, a co-curricular event where faculty identify a book and encourage all faculty, staff and students to read the book and incorporate it into their curricula, is in its fifth year at MCC-Longview. This year, as part of the 100th anniversary recognition of Metropolitan Community College and the 150th anniversary year-long recognition of the City of Lee’s Summit, the Common Read invites the community to read along and continue the discussion. The public is invited to hear Lacks’ descendants speak at a free convocation on April 16 at 6 p.m. at John Knox Village Pavilion. There is a free public reception at the Pavilion at 5 p.m. that day. Anyone may RSVP at MCCKC.edu/lvhomecoming. “I’m excited to use this book in a Common Read, says Anne Nienhueser, Longview Common Read chair and physics instructor. “A book that is good for a Common Read is one that creates

interest, speaks to many disciplines, and has an underlying controversy to enable lively discussions. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks fits those categories well.” On campus there will be monthly book discussions leading up to April 16; a display on the author’s research and writing process; a presentation about cell culture by the biology department; a psychology panel discussing mind/body connection, psychology of cultural mistrust, health costs of racism; a series of math questions related to the book; and an historian discussing the African-American experience. The Mid-Continent Public Library Lee’s Summit Branch has ordered extra copies of the book available March 15. The public is invited to a book discussion the branch is hosting at 1 p.m., Friday, April 10. Oprah Winfrey has promoted the book and is making a movie that will tell the story of how these cells made medical innovations possible while the Lacks family couldn’t afford to go to the doctor.

Chrysler’s 200S is a Big Step Forward ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
M
idsize sedans may not be the sexiest cars on the road but they’re getting sleeker and more stylish as car companies look to put some zing into everyday cars. Family four-doors are important because manufacturers sell them by the hundreds of thousands and competition between brands is keen. Until recently, Chrysler’s 200 sedan was not quite up to challenging the mainstay cars from Chevy, Ford, Mazda, Nissan, Honda and Toyota. Now it is. The 200 has been redesigned from the ground up. It rides on underpinnings whose roots trace from the Italian AlfaRomeo to the Dodge Dart and Jeep Cherokee. Compared to the Dart, the 200’s wheelbase is 2 inches longer and it is 8 inches longer overall. The 200’s handsome fastback styling gives it street cred when compared to the others in the segment, many of which also have similar profiles. The Chrysler pulls off the look more successfully than most. The only negative is that the sloping roofline makes it harder to get into the back seat. Styling is only one part of the equation, although it is an important one. Drivability reigns supreme. The allure of a pretty face may wane over the years, but the joy that comes every time you twist the key will last the life of the car. To that end, the 200 is on solid ground. It is available in frontwheel or all-wheel drive, with a 2.4-liter, 184-horsepower four-cylinder for the thrifty or a 3.6-liter, 295-horsepower V-6 for the en-
thusiast. Base prices start at $21,700. I drove an all-wheel-drive 200S with the V-6, and its base price was $28,695. Make no doubt about it, the V-6 is the sweeter choice. The engine is not only robust, with nearly 300 horsepower, but it delivers its goods with the subtlety of a silent butler. You needn’t mash the throttle to move briskly away from a stop, and the slight rumble of the exhaust is pleasant. The nine-speed automatic transmission is a first for a car in this segment. It offers a gear for every occasion, and helps fuel economy. Slip behind the wheel and you’re greeted with supportive seats and a sloping center console that houses a round gear selector knob as well as round knobs for radio and climate fan. The round gear selector knob is similar to that used in Jaguars, and it’s easier than moving a shift lever. The seating position seemed to be more sports car and less upright than some other sedans and that made it hard for me to find a comfortable driving position. The choice of interior materials and design is much better than Chryslers of old. The instrument panel is dominated by blue gauges surrounded by a blue glow. A small LCD screen between the gauges displays various information that the driver selects. The optional 8.4-inch navigation screen also has touch controls for audio and climate control. The interface is simple and easy to use.
Family four-doors are important because manufacturers sell them by the hundreds of thousands and competition between brands is keen.

The Uconnect Bluetooth system is operated by voice or the indash touch screen. A USB port is available, as is iPod control. The backup camera delivers an excellent view. Getting into the back seat required care so as not to bump heads, and the space between the seat and door opening often snagged an adult’s shoe when getting out. The 200S rides reasonably well but it seems the rear suspension could be a bit firmer because it felt too bouncy over freeway humps. Price: The base price of the test car was $28,695. Options included dual-zone climate control, rear air conditioning ducts, backup camera, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, remote start, navigation system, Alpine audio system, Sirius satellite radio and high-intensity headlights. The sticker price was $32,775. Warranty: Three years or 36,000 miles with a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Point: The 200S is a vast improvement over the previous 200. It
has sharp styling, the option of all-wheel drive and a choice of two engines: one for economy and one for performance. The interior is comfortably equipped. Counterpoint: A low seating position made it harder for me to find a comfortable driving position, and I would prefer a firmer rear suspension. LOR

Parting Thoughts
Working Through A Painting Hang-Up WORDS DENISE SNODELL
I
t was a line from an old Woody Allen movie that caused my drawn-out art dilemma. I had a blank wall in my house for ages, thanks to a few characters in Hannah And Her Sisters. In the movie, rising rock star Dusty Frye wanted art for his sprawling place in the Hamptons. He preferred something “big” because he had “a lotta wall space.” When artist Frederick overheard Dusty’s requirement, he shot back in disgust, “I don’t sell my work by the yard.” I remember snickering at that line so many years ago, but it also gave me pause. I decided I’d never default to buying art just because it fit my décor. My policy would be to embrace only the pieces that spoke to me. This is why I agonized over a blank wall in my home office for too many years. I never found anything worthy of that one expansive sea of drywall. The rest of the vertical space in my house had never been a problem. Most walls are disrupted by windows or stairs or bookshelves, leaving just cozy areas to frame normal-sized paintings. The original pieces I’ve displayed through the years came to me as gifts from painterly relatives. The rest I acquired by dumb luck—at estate sales, art fairs and even a few poorly attended silent auctions. Though nothing I have is worthy of an Antiques Roadshow appraisal bonanza, my art has always been special to me. Still. After a while, the home office seemed destined to have floor-to-ceiling-nothingness. Frederick’s comment continued to haunt. I felt the wall of blankness was begging for a “by the yard” piece of canvas, but I noticed larger paintings tended to have “by the yard” price tags as well. And breaking news—I never man-

aged to become a money-burning rock star like the character Dusty. I was stuck. So like a weird art installation, the emptiness I stared at every day turned out to be a statement in itself. Several statements, really: “You have kids. Cha-ching.” “A leak! Call the roofer$!” “Forget the wall. Check what’s streaming on Netflix.” But one day I got tired of the void. I did the unthinkable, at least through Frederick’s eyes: I went to a home furnishings chain store and purchased one of those oversized, mass-produced canvases. It was the kind with the textured paint strokes and paint drips that give the piece an original, fresh-from-the-artist’s-studio look. Not only was the same exact image with the same exact globs of paint selling coast to coast, but this large impressionist-y portrait of an owl was also on clearance. Yep. I bought a “fake” original. From the clearance bin. But honestly, some of these trendy, faux ‘one-of-a-kinds” are not that bad. Quite a few are gorgeous. The one I found even coordinated with the colors in the room. And this, according to fictional Frederick, is another no-no, because in the movie he also informed Dusty, “You don’t buy paintings to blend in with the sofa.” Sure, for the purists out there, what I did might be compared to hanging Spark Notes on the wall. Then I remind myself that only the Louvre has a Louvre staff and a Louvre budget. My blank wall was turning into negative space. Something had to be done. Big picture: I’m happy with the art in my house, especially the paintings from Aunt Rita and Cousin Mildred. For now, the mass-produced owl is okay. Well, maybe okay-ish, thanks to Frederick.
