Wedding memories.
A
s I sit around living rooms and kitchen tables with friends who have children of marrying age, I’m learning that there are two kinds of weddings. There are the ones that meet the wants and desires of the parents who are footing the bill and then there are the kinds of weddings where the bride and groom make all of the decisions. It’s an interesting conversation, and I’ve observed that opinions are strong. I suppose I had the former kind of wedding. My parents graciously offered to pay for a lovely, somewhat formal occasion with a sit-down dinner in a country club atmosphere. There were no Pinterest-inspired bedazzled sneakers to wear under the wedding dress for comfortable dancing and there was no denim or DIY in sight. And it all worked perfectly for me because it was important to me that my parents loved everything about that special day. They were throwing a celebration in our honor and we were oh-so-grateful. And 24 years later, as I look at the photo album from that day, I love everything about the venue, the meal, the flowers and the formal-ness of it all. Well, I do have some regrets about the bridesmaid dresses, but who doesn’t? What I remember most is the gathering of the people who made it a priority to be there. In the summer of 1991 when we gathered in my hometown for the ceremony, my parents had lived in that same suburb where I was raised for 20 years. Two decades worth of friends, neighbors and co-workers were there to congratulate the boy from Kansas who had won the heart of this girl they all seemed to know. (A note to brides and grooms everywhere—if the groom is from out of state, it will feel like HER party from start to finish. There’s no avoiding it when you only know 27 people at the reception.) People joke about saving ‘all of that money’ and eloping in Las Vegas, or planning a destination wedding for a group of only a dozen on a beach. But I wouldn’t change a thing about that (very hot) July day. Planning that day was something my parents loved being able to do for my groom and me. And these were the same friends and neighbors who gathered in that same church sanctuary years later at the memorial services of my mom and then later my brother. These special friends and neighbors are the memory makers of our lives, so for me, at least, no amount of whimsy in Las Vegas or on a Hawaiian beach could replace the memories of that day. Enjoy this season of weddings and I’ll see you around town!

Giving Back Book Club Feature It took some time for me to claim Olathe as home. I’m a western Kansas native, moved to Chicago after high school graduation, and earned an undergraduate degree from Loyola University. I loved my big city life, but can’t imagine a better place to raise kids. I am a proud mom of three and thankful for the opportunity to work from home as a freelance writer, marketing strategist and ghost author. In my spare time I blog about being a single mom at BacktoAllen.com, sweat out stress at hot yoga and prefer red over white. CHARLES REDFIELD
Star Student I grew up on Long Island, but attended the University of Kansas, earning a Bachelor of Science in education. This is my 50th year involved in high school sports in the Kansas City area. I started at Wyandotte High School as a teacher and an assistant coach in cross country, swimming and track. I cover high school sports for a number of area newspapers and magazines. I was the associate sports editor and sports editor for Sun Publications for 27 years. During my career, I have won several awards from the Suburban Newspapers of America and the Kansas Press Association. In 2007, I was the recipient of the Gordon Docking Media Award and in 2014 I was the sportswriters of the year for the KIAAA. KENDRA MATHEWSON

to describe a glimpse of a piece of that world. To me, numbers are a foreign country but words are home. I enjoy the journey of finding the right words amidst the chaos of being a mom of two kids, attempting to run a household and enjoying a ski on Lake Lotawana when I can. KIMBERLY WINTER STERN
Boundary Waters Feature My career as a freelance food, travel and lifestyle writer and radio show co-host on LIVE! From Jasper’s Kitchen is fueled by an innate curiosity about the human spirit and world around me. And lucky me, I live in a dynamic area with many stories waiting to be told. As a 25-year resident of Johnson County, I’m continually amazed at the fascinating people, creative entrepreneurs and proactive organizations doing wonderful things. Travel is an integral part of my life, too — discovering the adventures waiting just down the road. My motto: In life, always lick the bowl clean. TOM STRONGMAN
Driver’s Notebook Almost every morning, as I walk my neighborhood with our dog Pete, I see my daughter driving her kids to school or my son or daughter-in-law hauling their children. We are blessed beyond words to have our family so close. I work from home as a freelance writer and photographer, and I have everything that I love within a 1.5mile circle. I snap iPhone photos of beautiful ponds or autumn leaves. Our neighbors are friends and our friends are neighbors whose warmth and welcome provide an anchor for everyday living. Our town may be large, but its feeling is intimate.

left the port of St. Louis in February, sailed down the Mississippi river and by March had made it down the river system to Mobile Bay where they entered open ocean and are now making their way to the Panama Canal. Their plan is to continue on to the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean, Madagascar, South Africa, the Atlantic, South America, the Caribbean and home in three years. They want to spend half their time in ports, backpacking and exploring, and the other half at sea. The instigator of the trip is Kyle Hahn, a graduate of Lee's Summit North High School, who spent a lifetime sailing at Lotawana, and has long dreamed of sailing around the world. Trained as a pharmacist, Kyle is an intelligent, energetic free spirit who has always been able to manifest the ideas he has. He bought his first live-aboard sailboat off eBay six years ago and taught himself to sail it while
living aboard the boat on a small lake nearby. Kyle spent the past three years educating himself about everything he needed to know, saving and preparing for the trip. Also a LSNHS grad, Dylan Dwyer is an experienced sailor and accomplished outdoorsman, and Lotawana "lake rat." Dylan caught wind of Kyle's plans and after spending a summer working aboard a 125-foot wooden schooner in Maine, he didn't want to stay landlocked so he helped finish the boat and joined the crew. They determined their route based on trade winds, hurricane seasons, pirate waters, and places that they all want to explore, but as all sailors do, they will adjust their course as conditions and experiences change. They've worked hard to create a home on their sailboat, the "Winnie," a 1963 Alberg 35 built as a full-keel, 35’ offshore-capable boat. They'll be able to live a self-sufficient life, making their own electricity via solar panels and a homemade bicycle generator. The adventurers are documenting their journey when they are able, via satellite. You can follow them on Facebook, or read more delightful details at WinnieSails.com. obyne, the ‘California Girl’ was visiting friends in Texas. One evening a group met up at a dance club where Robyne was introduced to a fellow named Bill. Robyne quickly knew Bill was special. A week after their first meeting he sent flowers with a note attached which read "Care to dance?" She was smitten. After a long distance courtship, the two were married and Robyne moved to Texas. Over the years their family grew to include four children: Krista, Sean, Megan and Zach. They also have a miniature dachshund named Shelby who is like a 5th child. When they are not cheering Zach on at sporting events, Bill and Robyne enjoy Downton Abbey, gardening and bed-andbreakfast getaways. They have lived in The Meadows of Winterset for eight years.

The Single Mom KC OFFERING STRENGTH THROUGH HOSPITALITY AND FAITH ARTICLE LISA ALLEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
W
arm. Welcoming. Safe. Misty Honnold uses those words repeatedly when she talks about The Single Mom KC, a hospitality-based group focused on helping single mothers overcome obstacles and find the support and resources necessary to thrive, not just survive. The Single Mom KC operates from three guiding principles: first, to bring hope to single mothers by removing shame and reproach; second, to transform the negative statistics that often surround fatherless children; third, to educate others to know how to effectively strengthen and support single mother families. Honnold, founder and director, knows of what she speaks. As a single mother with four children and a veteran in the church ministry field, Honnold understands that being a single mother is about more than simply being single. “So often a woman’s identity is stripped after divorce or a breakup,” she says. “People often don’t understand what a single mom’s life is like from day to day. They might wonder why stepping forward to ask for help is such a difficult thing to do, or why single moms sometimes don’t flock to church and other social gatherings. They don’t, or can’t, because they are exhausted!” “We partner with businesses, organizations and churches to teach them how to walk alongside a single mother in a way that encourages and uplifts her and her family.” There is no shortage of statistics that every conversation about single parenting seems to circle back to. In Kansas City, one of every two children live in a single parent home. Approximately 70 percent of single mothers live in poverty. Eighty percent of single moms leave the church after divorce and only 1 percent of evangelical churches offer support for single mothers. “It’s common to mow over the emotional and spiritual needs of single mothers. There are issues of poverty and oppression. It’s our goal to help others effectively lift up single moms, and to instill the understanding that single parent families are not broken. 24
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | May 2015
There is no shame in who we are or in how we live our lives. The paradigm of how we frame single parenting needs to change,” she says. Honnold’s ministry utilizes small groups, regional events, discipleship, and inter-ministry networking to offer support for single mothers. Childcare is offered for each event. “In helping women find their identity, we help them find their own strength,” says Honnold. “Some women don’t know the Lord when they first come to us. Some do. We encourage women to find the Lord in every situation, to listen to what His heart says, and to understand that there is a safe place for them.” The Single Mom KC offers seminars that focus on parenting and physical, emotional, spiritual and financial well-being. Mentoring is offered for both mothers and children. Monthly workshops happen
in homes and a new focus—Clothing with Dignity—has grown from a need for well-made, current, business casual and professional attire. Once a month The Single Mom KC offers 10 single moms the chance to visit its boutique and choose two outfits, complete with accessories and a one-hour workshop focused on building business skills, speaking with confidence, and discovering individual strengths. Honnold’s team strives to continually increase The Single Mom KC’s reach. Laurie Morris, a spiritual life coach, serves as pastoral director and Jessica Palsgrove is the director of the clothing boutique. A board of directors helps steer the course and a new branch, The
Single Mom Dominican Republic, has started to spread The Single Mom KC’s mission of hospitality and connection outside of Kansas City. “I wish there wasn’t a need for us,” says Honnold, “but there is, and it’s tremendous.” Visit TheSingleMomKC.org to learn more.

City of Lee’s Summit Selects Rick Poeschl as Fire Chief ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A
fter a national search and extensive interviews with staff and community-wide stakeholders, the City of Lee’s Summit recently announces the selection of Rick Poeschl as the new fire chief. There will be a swearing-in ceremony held in the coming weeks. Poeschl has been serving as the City’s acting fire chief of the department of 144 employees since the retirement of Keith Martin in September 2014. “I am honored to be chosen as the chief of the Lee’s Summit Fire Department and am excited about our future," says Poeschl. "The department is made up of a great group of dedicated personnel committed to providing service excellence. Our department continues to strive to achieve accreditation through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) by measuring our work against industry standards of excellence – basically holding up a mirror and asking 'How are we doing?' We are looking for continual improvement in our service delivery, and have made strides in those areas.” Among his goals are to build upon those departmental successes by improving and enhancing internal and external communication promoting community involvement. In regard to selecting Chief Poeschl to the top ranking position with the department, City Manager Stephen Arbo says, “It was clear Rick possesses the leadership skills and vision to serve as our next fire chief. My decision was based upon a combination of his 26 years of experience as a firefighter, engineer, fire specialist, captain, battalion chief and assistant chief of support services and his performance during the last six months as the acting fire chief.”
26
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | May 2015
Poeschl has an impressive fire safety background - all with the Lee’s Summit Fire Department. He began his career with the department in 1988 and quickly moved up the ranks serving in several positions before eventually being named as assistant chief of support services in January 2004. For the last six months, he has served in this prominent role as well as acting fire chief. He has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a minor in fire protection technology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, as well as attended the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Poeschl is a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the Missouri Fire Chiefs Association, Heart of America Association of Fire Chiefs, and Western Missouri Fire Chiefs Association. He has been married to Jackie for 25 years and they are the proud parents of 24-year-old Kelcie, 21-year-old Benjamin and 18-year-old Danny.

Star Student
Area Student Overcomes Frightening Diagnosis ARTICLE CHARLES REDFIELD | PHOTOGRAPHY MCKENNA MATHEWSON
S
am Smith has learned the value of living life one day at a time despite the fact that he is just a junior at Lee’s Summit West High School. It all started in the fall of his eighth grade year during a football game for Summit Lakes Middle School. The running back suffered an injury that didn’t appear to be serious at the time. “I broke my leg during a game,” he says. “I had it casted and when the cast came off there was extra growth.” The growth was biopsied. “The doctor determined it was osteosarcoma,” he says. That was in the spring of 2012. And after the determination of what was causing the growth, there was the treatment for the cancer. “I had four rounds of chemotherapy, then surgery to replace my tibia with a medal rod,” says Smith. But that wasn’t the end of the treatment. “After all that, I had eight rounds of chemo and all looked good,” he says. “I was told there was no evidence of the disease.” In spite of the great news, this took the talented running back out of football and all contact sports for his freshman year at Lee’s Summit West. This is not easy for a freshman in high school to deal with, but several months later, things got worse for the Titan freshman. Doctors found out that his cancer had spread to another part of the body. “Nine months later, doctors discovered that the cancer had returned in my lungs,” he says. “I went through 12 more rounds of chemo and a wedge resection surgery on my right lung.” In November of 2014 he and his parents got the news they’d been hoping would come at the end of the journey. “I was told I had a clean bill of health,” he says. He still has to see the doctors every three months just to be sure. And, the Titan junior has been able to return to the world of sports. He can’t be involved in contact sports because of his leg surgery, but he can participate in non-contact sports. So, Smith took up swimming with the Titans swimming team. He is a sprint freestyler; his main events are the 50-and 100-yard freestyles. His best times are 25.3 in the 50 free and 58.4 in the 100 free. He has not qualified for the state meet, but that could be coming in his senior year in the fall of 2015.

Not bad for someone just taking up the sport. All of his medical problems have impacted this young man's outlook on life. “It has definitely changed my life,” he says. “I take my life one day at a time and try to enjoy it all.” Smith has impressed many people at the school. “Sam is a young man with so much love for life that no matter what comes his way he is ready to tackle it,” says Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Debbie Katzfey. “He has that never-evergive-up attitude. He is an inspiration to all of us to live life each day and never take one day for granted.”

Local Developer spearheads Homebuilding. It’s a family affair.
You might say home building and development are in Jim Riffe’s blood. After all, his father, Hank Riffe, and grandfather, Winston Thompson, were both builders and developers. In fact, the family tradition of quality design and workmanship in the Kansas City area goes back more than 60 years. “I was out on the job sites stacking bricks, mowing lawns and building things by age 11,” Jim explained. “After earning my engineering degree, an MBA in finance, and working as an engineer, I gravitated back to what I love best… building homes for families.” Today, this Master Builder’s homes grace the landscape of more than 80 communities in Johnson, Jackson and Cass counties, including Loch Lloyd, Deer Creek, Longview Farms, White Horse, Falcon Ridge and Woodland Shores.
What he learned from Johnson County. “I can remember when Roe & College was the end of the earth,” he quipped. “Now development extends to 199th Street and beyond.” Jim witnessed that growth firsthand, building and developing upper-bracket custom homes in Overland Park for more than 15 years – and watching the shopping centers, schools, churches and businesses follow. Now, his instincts and experience tell him that kind of growth is imminent along Highway 150. Situated just minutes south of Lee’s Summit – and within its award-winning school district,
housing boom south of Lee’s Summit the area integrates rolling hills, streams and wooded areas with a laid-back, small-town atmosphere. And, given Lee’s Summit’s population boom (an increase of more than 30 percent since 2000), expansion is a foregone conclusion. So, when 500 wooded acres became available on Highway 150, across from the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area, Jim seized the opportunity. He’s already begun building homes in a community designed around the existing ponds, woods and trails. “We like to stay ahead of the growth curve,” he said. “That way everyone’s investment is protected.”
How his vision – and tenacity – add value. Buying into a growth area is a smart move, to be sure. But, for Jim, it’s just the first step. To achieve the artistic vision he creates for each of his communities, he knows he must oversee each step in its evolution. And, that he does, relentlessly. He hires the best architects and land planners to help him perfect his vision. This ensures that home designs, colors and proportions are aesthetically pleasing – and in harmony with each other and the natural setting. What’s more, he gets to know each builder, searching for those who excel in professionalism, craftsmanship, teamwork and customer satisfaction. He looks for builders whose plans reflect outstanding floor plans, flow and
finishing touches. And at every step along the way, he strives to insure that aesthetic and quality standards are maintained. Jim says, the extra effort “translates into a community that will retain its character and value, over time.”
Come home to the great outdoors.
When you arrive at Woodland Trails, the impressive timber entryway is reminiscent of one you might find in the mountains of Colorado. The beautiful, custom-built homes are nestled among woods and rolling hills, connected by miles of walking trails, serene ponds and abundant green space. After a walk on the trail, residents will soon be able to enjoy a resort-style pool with its pavilion, hot tub and water slide. Or they can organize a game of softball at the nearby athletic field. And, kids will love the upscale, interactive playground, designed to encourage movement, social development and just plain fun. It’s the kind of community that matches Jim’s vision perfectly. “A home is so much more than just four walls. It’s where families are raised, memories are made and life is celebrated. And, community is a huge part of that. At Woodland Trails, the beautiful space and amenities encourage people to get outside and interact.”

age or gender, are anxious to dip their toes, fishing rods and paddles in the waters where motors aren’t allowed, the gentle wind is a welcome friend and unparalleled beauty is around every bend. Ely, Minnesota, the departure point to the great 1,090,000-acre strand of wilderness and resorts, bustles with warm-weather activity and mini traffic jams as cars and trucks loaded with Kevlar canoes and oodles of camping gear inch along Sheridan Street. Shoppers stocking up on maps, food, drinking water, and other backwoods’ necessities congregate in the outfitters that line the street. People decked out in thick socks and hiking boots, anxious for one last homecooked meal and a slice of state fair-worthy pie before setting off for a rendezvous with nature, jockey for tables at the Chocolate Moose and quaff pints of craft beer at the Rockwood Restaurant and Lounge. Ely is about a 10-hour drive from Kansas City—a chance to stop off in the Twin Cities for an overnight to break up the long car ride. If you’re traveling with the kids, book a stay at the Radisson Hotel Bloomington by Mall of America, conveniently located in the same building as Water Park of America. There’s plenty to do besides splashing in exhilarating water rides or playing arcade games—mom can choose from a myriad of treatments at the on-site Trillium Spa or opt for a shopping excursion at the world-famous Mall of America, just a short trip from the hotel. The dining options are diverse to suit every taste, ranging from the Sleepy Eye Café for a hearty breakfast or the Split Rock Grille for a casual dinner. CONTINUED >

ioned resorts or cabins that are throwbacks to a different era. Fenske Lake Cabins is a picturesque, quiet collection of private cabins nestled among towering pines at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on the 105acre spring-fed Fenske Lake. Family-owned and operated, the boutique resort boasts nine one- to three-bedroom cabins are perched along one-half mile of the beautiful Fenske Lake shoreline. Enjoy modern kitchens, a private dock and charcoal grill; a communal authentic Northwoods sauna; and a canoe that comes along with the rental. The grounds also have a fish cleaning house (fish for smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye and perch on
the lake) and a modern shower house (cabins have cold running water only).

Outfitting companies and guide services, where you can rent superlight canoes, sleeping bags, fishing rods and reels, private guides and much more, abound in the Ely area. Ely Outfitting Company, operated by owner and guide Jason Zabokrtsky and located on Sheridan St., is a gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area’s splendors. Offering everything from complete and partial outfitting packages to shuttles and transportation and canoe and gear rentals to specially designed menus, the business is also a fly-in trip expert. Zabokrtsky’s company is dedicated to no-trace ethics, wilderness stewardship and protection of the wild. When in Ely, a meal at The Chocolate Moose is a must. The Northwoods décor and ambience enhance the food, which is served seasonally. Don’t miss a slice of the homemade pie a la mode. Down the street is the Rockwood Restaurant and Lounge, known for cold beer and plates of freshly prepared walleye, juicy burgers, and stuffed meatloaf. If it’s purely imbibing and chatting with local residents you want, pull up a stool to the bar at the Kwazy Wabbit. VISIT
After a full day of fishing, canoeing and kayaking, mountain biking, hiking or snapping wildlife pictures, take in Ely’s fascinating museums and sites. The Dorothy Molter Museum recounts the life and legacy of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area’s last non-indigenous resident. Exhibits and
tours preserve and interpret the region’s heritage as inspired by Molter, alternately nicknamed the Root Beer Lady or Nightingale of the Wilderness, who lived for 56 years on Knife Lake and made homemade root beer to sell to thousands of canoeists passing through the are. The 20,000-square-foot International Wolf Center provides a captivating glimpse into the survival of wolf populations through exhibits and education and maintains a live wolf population. Immerse yourself in the bear’s world at the North American Bear Center whose mission is to champion the long-term survival of bears through educational myth busting. Bears live in 2.5 acres of national forest that include manmade dens and a pond. For more information on planning your Boundary Waters Canoe Area vacation, visit Ely.org.

Lake Lotawana sailing group celebrates 50 years. ARTICLE KENDRA MATHEWSON | PHOTOGRAPHY CHUCK COMSTOCK
E
very Wednesday morning for the past five decades the beautiful blue waters of Lake Lotawana have been painted with the colorful sails of the women’s Social Butterflies sailing fleet. This summer the marks the 50th anniversary since the founding of the organization, a testament to the group’s enduring legacy and multigenerational dynamic. Those colorful sails are a distinguishing feature of the butterfly class of sailboats, a not-so-common vessel manufactured by Barnett Boats since 1961. The boat itself was new on the scene when the original women founded Lotawana’s fleet in 1965. The butterfly was created to be a small, fun boat for lakes, a mini version of a larger 20-foot scow-hulled boat with a single sail, called a C-Scow. The builder shrank the hull dimensions to 12 feet overall, and simplified the boat with a single centerboard and rudder. It is sailed by one or two people. Sailors had brought the butterfly to Lotawana back then as a junior sailing boat, and some moms of those young sailors liked it so much they decided to form their own fleet. Betty Clagett, Midge Robison and Babe Atha were three of those women; many of their progeny have participated in (and carried on) the program. Today, there’s a lot about this group that makes them unusual, not the least of which is that they are the oldest and only women’s butterfly sailing fleet in the U.S., according to the research they’ve done to prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary this year. SOCIAL BUTTERFLIES (CONTINUED)
The large size of their fleet also sets them apart. They have 23 sailors, and 50 members, many of whom are retired sailors. Social Butterflies has also cultivated generations of excellent sailors. “Because our fleet doesn’t compete much off Lake Lotawana, it’s sort of a secret from the rest of the world,” explains Lisa Lala, fleet captain. “So many of the women who have sailed in this fleet throughout the years have gone on to compete in other classes. A lot of children of these women have also gone on to do impressive things in sailing beyond the lake shores of Lotawana.” Amy Chinnery Valmassei is an example. She grew up sailing at Lotawana and had a sailing scholarship at Rollins College in Florida. She is now one of the fleet’s top sailors and helps teach new ones. “It’s one of those timeless things. I remember my mom doing it, women old enough to be my grandmother sailing, it is part of the whole Lotawana family experience,” she recalls. “Paulla Martin ran the junior butterflies program when I was a kid, now I’m her peer sailing with her. That’s the beauty of the whole sailing program at Lotawana,” Amy explains. The experienced, competitive sailors (some of whom have 20, 30, and even 60 years experience) are on the course with people who have never sailed before
Sailing is a gentlemen’s sport; for women it’s definitely for the gracious and generous of spirit. and because of the spirit of the group, it works. “We all cheer and celebrate together. When the top sailors cross the finish line, they go back to help coach along the sailors at the back. We try and take care of each other, coaching people along even though we’re competing against them.” Sailing may be what brings them together, but it is the social element that has created such a vital, enduring program. The club’s format has remained the same since the beginning: Sailing first, socializing after at rotating luncheons hosted by members at their lake homes. The friendly camaraderie permeates the racecourse as well as the luncheons, which has become an integral part of building community for Lake Lotawana as women share life together. “Because this group is so multigenerational, it offers something we need today – the voice of women from other generations,” Lisa says. Preparing and sharing lunch together—strictly women only—sitting at tables throughout someone’s home all provide the opportunity to talk about parenting, marriage and life. It is such a special and important experience that both working women and moms make arrangements for that time off in the summers. Lisa’s words summarize this special group. “This is a truly good-natured organization that does not take itself too seriously, except maybe those moments on the racecourse, but even then care and generosity almost always prevail. Sailing is a gentlemen’s sport; for women it’s definitely for the gracious and generous of spirit. “The Social Butterflies is such an incredibly vital program that it has become a treasured tradition and institution that is incredibly rare and so special.” 46

From WeddingDress Memories to Baby Bedding HOW I GAVE MY BABY GIRL’S ROOM AN HEIRLOOM DÉCOR
ARTICLE MORIAH SCHOWENGERDT PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTINA SANDBERG & PROVIDED
T
here has never been a time in my life where I felt more beautiful than on my wedding day. Wearing that gorgeous, white gown made me feel like a real princess. The only sad thing about wearing that beautiful dress w as knowing that I would wear it for just one day. Like most brides after their wedding, I considered preserving my gown. But the thought of it sitting in a box at the back of a closet seemed not only pointless, but like a big waste of money. That’s when my mom and I had a great idea. The idea came just months before I conceived my first child. My mom was looking at the train of my dress and said, “Wouldn’t this make a beautiful baby blanket?” It hit us both at the same time: My wedding dress would make the most beautiful baby bedding. And so we were off to find someone with the talent to make that very thing happen. And then we met Marilyn Arnold. Arnold has been sewing since she was a teen-ager. When we met her at a networking event, she told us how she turned wedding dresses into beautiful heirloom pillows that become a special keepsake for women. “I see women cry when they first look at the pillows I made from their wedding dresses. It’s very moving,” says Arnold. We asked her how she felt about turning my dress into a baby bedding set. She was excited about the project from the start. Since it was her first time with this kind of a effort, she took extra special care and paid

very close attention to how I wanted it to look. Some people might think it took some nerve for me to trust someone with my wedding gown and a pair of scissors. I’ll admit I was more than a little bit nervous, but I am so glad I did it. After completing the set, Marilyn shared her own excitement. “Creating the baby bedding was so exciting for me. This bedding is a combination of two of the most amazing days of a couple’s life, their wedding and the birth of their first child,” says Arnold. In our opinion, she absolutely knocked it out of the park. When I first laid my eyes on the finished project I was astounded. It was perfect for our baby girl’s room. She would be arriving in just a month and the bedding was just what we needed to put the final touch to her room. With just a few “mommy adjustments” to the bumper, her nursery looked complete. It was just as I had imagined: soft, elegant and dreamy. Today our little princess is seven months old and loves to snuggle up to that cozy bumper. We have received so many compliments about how beautiful her nursery is and mostly how elegant and stunning the baby bedding is. It brings me great joy to see that my wedding dress is being used on a daily basis in our home. Not only is it getting used by me, but with care through time, I hope to pass it on to my daughter to use with her own babies. Visit MarilynArnoldDesigns.com for more information on Arnold’s company.

Biking, Walking and Blooming: It’s May! ARTICLE ED KRAEMER, M.D

ho doesn’t love the month of May? These warm sunny days are great for our lawns and flower gardens. And if you are still “holed up” from the winter, May is the perfect time to pump up the tires, dust off the bike helmet and hit the streets or trails again. Think about upgrading those old walking or running shoes as well. It will do your body (and your mind and spirit) a world of good to get outside and enjoy our beautiful community on foot! Of course, many of you are already doing just that. A little spring chill hasn’t kept you inside…and that’s great. It’s wonderful to see so many people enjoying our award-winning parks and trails, walking through our neighborhoods, or strolling around Lee’s Summit’s charming and pedestrian-friendly downtown. Lee’s Summit has really become a healthier and more active place to live and raise a family. Our parks and trails system is nationally recognized. Our “Livable Streets Policy, ” passed by the City Council in 2010, is producing safer and more inviting streets, sidewalks and multi-use paths all over town. Mayor Randy Rhoads has issued a proclamation that, May is Bike and Walk Month in Lee’s Summit. He cites many reasons for this, including, “Creating bicycle-friendly and walk-friendly communities
has been shown to improve citizens’ health, well-being, and quality of life, to boost community spirit, to improve traffic safety, and to reduce pollution and congestion.” There are many “Bike and Walk Month” related events in Lee’s Summit and the KC Metro to help get you out and about. Here are just a few examples: • Historic Bike Ride, May 16. Downtown family fun CityOfLS.net • Tour of Kansas City, in Lee’s Summit May 25 TourOfKC.com • KC Triathlon, Longview Beach May 17 KansasCityTriathlon.com As you and your family walk and ride bikes around town, the number one priority is: Be Safe! • Use proper equipment, including bike helmets. • Be VISIBLE. Bright colors are best. • Be AWARE of traffic and others around you. • Obey traffic laws. City Council recently updated bicycle-related ordinances. • When driving, slow down & use caution around people walking & biking. CONTINUED >

Remembering the Fair CELEBRATING LEE’S SUMMIT’S 150TH ANNIVERSARY ARTICLE ARTICLE SARAH SHORE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

id you know Lee’s Summit, Missouri, hosted the Jackson County Fair for more than 40 years? The Fair was held in Harris Park, located at U.S. 50 and M-291 south highways, and people from all over Jackson County and beyond traveled to Lee’s Summit to exhibit prize-winning livestock, enter home-made items and goods for judging and to celebrate their agricultural roots. The event always kicked off with a parade, which came through downtown Lee’s Summit. The fair had famous visitors as well. In letters to wife Bess, President Harry S. Truman once wrote he was taking a Hereford cow to show in Lee’s Summit. After his presidency, the Fair held a “Harry S. Truman Appreciation Night” in 1956 to honor the former president and native of Jackson County. In 1976, our country’s bicentennial, Lee’s Summit was named an official National Bicentennial Community designated by the American Revolution Bicentennial Adminis-

tration. There were special celebrations during the Jackson County Fair, including a Native American pow wow. By 1980, the Jackson County Fair was no longer held, but a great history remained. In celebration of Lee’s Summit’s Sesquicentennial in 2015, an oldtime county fair has been planned for Memorial Day weekend, May 22-23. The event, called A Fair to Remember, runs from 5-11 p.m. on Friday, May 22, and 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, at Paradise Park, 1021 NE Colbern Rd., with many of the events and fun activities that were featured all those years ago when the Jackson County Fair took place in Lee’s Summit. From agricultural activities to musicians, pageants and some popular fair fare, the weekend event is part of the Truly 150 campaign – a year-long celebration of Lee’s Summit’s 150th anniversary. The event will include a 4-H clubs, Missouri Town display, Civil War encamp-
ments, a Battle of Lone Jack display, and antique tractors, all in honor of the past Jackson County Fair events. The event also will feature “Toby Shows,” which were traveling rural American theatre shows popular in the early twentieth century and featured vaudeville-type melodramas. Admission is free; tickets for rides and other activities will be available for purchase. All proceeds will be donated to the Lee’s Summit Historical Society and the History Museum. Lotawana Garden Tour EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF THE LAKESIDE GARDENS ARTICLE KENDRA MATHEWSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
he Lake Lotawana Garden Tour offers a day to enjoy the natural and man-made beauty to be found along the shores of this local gem. Lake residents invite you to come and experience the joy of the gardens selected for their annual garden tour on June 13, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Though you can take the tour by car, the most fun and adventurous way to do it is to ride one of the many volunteer-driven pontoon boats from the docks of the Marina Grog and Galley inside Gate 1 off Colbern Road. From the boat you can take in the beauty of the whole lake, including its unique combination of original cabins and luxurious and eclectic homes, from a lakeside view, which offers an entirely different perspective than from the street. Eight gardens are available to stroll through, and range from formal grandeur to a relaxing woodland setting. One of the featured gardens is at a newer home located in S block inside Gate 5 off of Highway 7. The young yard is only in its third spring. The owners worked with Vivian Pine and Flora Culture to design their yard and pick their plants. Their first priority was to have a maintenance-free yard with no grass to mow or weeds to pull. They also desired an unobstructed view of the lake (you’ll see their view is absolutely spectacular), year-long color and to attract butterflies. Throughout the property, plentiful plantings of milkweed, lantana, buddleia, echinacea, dianthus and delosperma have thus far brought butteflies in five varieties. Last year they enjoyed observing monarchs in all stages, which they learned to identify at the annual Powell Gardens’ Butterfly Exhibit.
From the patio they enjoy a small waterfall feature and firepit which are part of an inventive planting barrier created in lieu of a railing to accomplish the unobstructed lake view. Two clever metal sculptures by Fred Conlon reflect a bit of the personality of the owners who enjoy a sense of humor. One is a giant fish eating a pesky garden gnome, set in a patch of reeds growing under the metal artwork, giving the illusion the fish is jumping out of the water. Brilliant. A sweeping stone stairway gently curves around the lot, integrated with the natural rock and defining the garden as it leads down to the water (or up to the house). Off the stairs, a stone walking path leads to a darling little foot bridge through the middle of the garden. CONTINUED >
The homeowners love butterflies and designed the gardens around their lakefront home to attract butterflies.

Lotawana Garden Tour features the gorgeous grounds of this home in S block.
Throughout the property are planted a variety of fruit trees (apple and peach), dogwoods, magnolias and crepe myrtle. When the owners created the new garden, they were able to save all the beautiful plants and trees from the previous home, transplanting them to their son’s first home. Lilacs and lavender waft wonderful smells across the garden, patio and deck. Sitting in an upper screened-in porch, the owners enjoy beautiful blooms from a purple robe tree. You’ll also find hydrangeas growing on both sides of the house. With water pumped up from the lake run through trickling hoses, the garden offers colorful pops of oranges and pinks, and provide beautiful cut flower arrangements all summer long. Whether from the water or the street, the walk through this garden will be guided by volunteers who will direct tour guests along the path around the property. Such is the case for the other seven gardens on this year’s tour.

Paranoia Does Not Go With Your Outfit ARTICLE BECKY BLADES
W
hen my independent younger daughter left our cozy neighborhood this fall to go to college on a big city campus, I wanted her to take self-defense classes and to agree to a list of promises about keeping herself safe. The more I heard myself talk, the more I realized I was becoming that crazy paranoid mom. It was not a good look on me. As I talked to wise mom friends who seem to wear this problem better than me, I realized the advice my daughter needs on campus is no different than what I gave her when she started dating and driving in high school. And it’s no different than what I wanted to tell my 75-year-old mother last month when she headed off across four states for a solo road trip in her Prius. Staying safe is timeless, ageless, and goes with everything. 1. Honor your fear; it may be trying to tell you something. Call it what you will, intuition or gut feeling is actually your brain reading a million tiny signals. Fear can be a gift, protecting us from people who mean us harm or situations that don’t add up. Trust your instincts. 2. Carry protection, or at least a security blanket. Whether it’s an alarm gizmo or a can of mace, having something to hold onto when you are out alone is always good idea. Just be sure you know how to use it. This almost guarantees you will never have to. 3. Don’t promise a kidney to someone you met in a bar after 2 a.m. Our mothers said “Nothing good happens after midnight.” Well…that may be pushing it. But incredibly stupid stuff happens when people are tired, intoxicated and have forgotten the value of their body parts. 64
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | May 2015
That fear gift we are learning to trust can go off-duty when we are under the spell of dazzling new acquaintances. Don’t sign contracts, make promises or give up your car keys to people you don’t know, especially at a time when you are…shall we say…not at your best. 4. Have an escape and rescue plan. Even smart, strong women get victimized. Have a plan. If you’re on a date or out on the town and things get scary, use an escape strategy you have worked through in advance with a friend. The fake phone call or coded text SOS is actually pretty effective. But crawling out the bathroom window of the restaurant only works in the movies. 5. No matter how much you love and trust a partner, stay in charge of your money, your body, and your state of mind. The biggest risks most women face are to our personal control and strength of spirit. This never changes, no matter how old we get. 6. Don’t be paranoid. If you are lucky enough to live in America, and smart enough to happen onto this article, your list of things to fear is as long as you want it to be. Living scared and acting afraid of your shadow is unnecessary, and it’s unattractive. You’re fine. Just don’t be stupid.

LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER WHAT SHE SAID THEN, WHAT WE’RE SAYING NOW EDITED BY ANN IMIG
I
n 2010, Ann Imig organized a live-staged reading event in Madison, WI, to bring together her community—mothers and non-mothers alike—and provide a forum for a diversity of voices to share their personal stories. These readers spoke honestly and openly about motherhood, family, childhood, and parenting. And so, the Listen to Your Mother movement was born. This one event quickly grew into an annual national performance sensation, with nearly 40 nationwide events scheduled for May 2015. Now, in Listen To Your Mother: What She Said Then, What We’re Saying Now Imig brings to the page what she helped bring to the stage five years ago with this collection of 56 candid, funny, poignant, unexpected and soul-bearing essays. The contributors to this powerful anthology bravely share their stories, ranging from hilarious to heartbreaking, showcasing the experiences of ordinary people from a broad spectrum of racial, gender, and age backgrounds. With a roster of writers that includes first time essayists and New York Times-bestselling authors, Listen To Your Mother reflects our diverse contemporary lifestyles and rapidly changing definitions of motherhood. While some are paeans to the mother we might not have appreciated as children, unaware then of how hard a task motherhood can be, others fully embrace the power of their family matriarchs. A woman faces the painful truth that there is nothing she can do to save her mentally ill, homeless mother from the streets. A military mom raises her baby alone when her husband is deployed to the Middle East. A mom tries to hold it together while battling cancer. One mother recounts the elation and ultimate heartbreak of an unplanned pregnancy in middle age, while another shares the years of sadness that accompanied her decision to give her baby up for adoption.
Listen To Your Mother delivers the collective voice of mothers among us and celebrates less conventional arrangements. Mothers write of their personal struggles in the day-to-day job of mothering, of trying to raise a child who is not spoiled, of navigating single motherhood after divorce or death, and of dreading the body image issues that will one day inevitably undermine a young daughter’s confidence. “Listen to Your Mother. It’s a cliché, it’s the sixth commandment, and it’s an imperative for curbing children young and old from poor life choices like jaywalking and sixty-four ounce sodas,” Imig writes.

Mid-Year Changes Enhance Volvo’s S60 ARTICLE & PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
A
fter last year’s styling tweaks to the S60, Volvo has given the car a midyear update that includes more technology and in-car connectivity. One example is Volvo On Call, a smartphone app that lets you lock and unlock the car, read the fuel level, odometer, average speed and average fuel consumption remotely. It was most handy on a recent cold morning because I could start the car in my driveway so it could warm up but still keep the doors locked. Volvo calls their system Sensus Connect, and it is a subscription service that comes with six months free. The driver can create a WiFi hotspot inside the car for passengers to connect smartphones, tablets or laptops. The 7-inch color monitor in the center of the dash can display navigation information as well as on-screen owner’s manual. Several cloud-based apps such as Pandora, Stitcher and Yelp are also available. S60 prices begin at $33,750 for the T-5 and top out at $46,950 for the T6 all-wheel-drive R-Design Platinum. I drove a T6 Platinum from Volvo’s press fleet and its sticker price was $46,525. The S60 is available with one of four engines. The front-wheeldrive T5 Drive-E has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 240 horsepower; the all-wheel-drive T5 has a turbocharged, 2.5-liter five-cylinder with 250 horsepower; the T6 Drive-E has a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder with 302 horsepower; and the all-wheel-drive R-Design has a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 325 horsepower. 66
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | May 2015
The transmission is an eight-speed automatic that can be shifted manually with paddles on the steering wheel. I drove the T6 that manages to pump 302 horsepower from just 2.0-liters, a number that would have been an impressive number for a racing engine not many years ago. Volvo is able to achieve this level of performance by utilizing both a supercharger and a turbocharger. The supercharger provides extra power at very low speeds while the turbo kicks in extra zip at high speeds. The result is an engine that feels twice its size. It delivers excellent power from idle to top end and is rated at 24 miles per gallon in the city and 35 on the highway. Fuel economy is aided by a start/stop function that shuts off the engine when the car stops. The driver can select the Eco + mode that activates coasting when the throttle is released and disconnects the air conditioning compressor from time to time. I don’t like the jerkiness of the start/stop feature and I always turned it off. The S60 can be equipped with a suite of safety technology features, several of which take control if the driver is not paying attention. A pedestrian/cyclist detection system alerts the driver to a person or cyclist in the road and, below 22 miles per hour, will automatically apply the brakes. City Safety will automatically brake the car to a stop below 31 miles per hour to avoid a collision. Lane keeping will tug the car back into the lane if it wanders. Other features such as blind-spot detection system, cross-traffic alert for the rearview camera, stability control, anti-lock brakes and corner tracCONTINUED > tion control are useful driver aids.

The suspension is tight but not harsh and the handling is responsive and athletic. I was impressed with the lack of noise on the highway. The S60’s cabin is spare but elegant in a Scandinavian style. Organizing Your Digital Cabinet INNOVATIVE NOTE AND TO-DO APPS BRIDGE DESKTOP, TABLETS, SMARTPHONES ARTICLE CHRISTOPHER CLARK
Y
ou're several months into your New Year's resolution (ahem, "goal") of organizing your digital life. The first month of 2015 saw you blazing through task lists, organizing projects and consolidating those important meeting notes into one tidy place, right? Me neither. Fear not. There's enough time and plenty of tools to turn this around. The productivity space is bulging with powerful apps that put your digital scraps and sticky notes wherever you are: smartphone, tablet or laptop/desktop. Three apps in particular --Evernote, Wunderlist and Workflowy -- are winning raves because they're easy to use and work across multiple computing platforms. Regardless of whether you rock an iPhone or Android smartphone, Mac or PC, these apps and your notes are ready when you are.
list before heading to the store. You can add time-based reminders and notes to items for setting deadlines or extra reference, both of which can turn Wunderlist into a powerful personal project management system. COST: Like Evernote, Wunderlist starts free with features that will
EVERNOTE: As a digital filing cabinet, Evernote (Evernote.com) has huge name recognition because of its ubiquity and intuitive interface. With apps on nearly every conceivable platform, notes can be created and stored in subject-specific notebooks. Notebooks created around the same topic can be put in a "stack" for even more topical hierarchy. But Evernote's real power may lie with tagging. Rather than organizing notes in a notebook metaphor, you can add label-like "tags" that act as searchable keywords. Once you've created and regularly use tags (tip: start with a handful of tags and add more once you're comfortable with searching for them) you may find it quicker to tag notes versus filing them in a proper notebook. The Web is full of Evernote tagging strategies, so a little searching will reveal a system you can customize. Whatever system you use, its success depends on actually using it. What are you waiting for?
satisfy most users. A $4.99/month premium tier adds things like unlimited subtasks and collaboration features for sharing lists with friends or co-workers.
COST: Evernote has a $5/month premium that adds a lot of power-user functionality, but the free tier has more than enough features for most users.
WORKFLOWY: This web-based app is brilliant because it's so simple. Workflowy (Workflowy.com) looks like an outlining service that does nothing but make lists. When you open the website you're confronted with a canvas of white space. No notebooks, extra windows or superfluous options to distract you. Simply type a task and hit "return." You've just created a list that's ready for your next item. All lists can have sub-lists, and each of those can have their own sub-lists. It's a dead-simple and highly navigable hierarchical approach to managing almost anything containing multiple steps or items. Clicking on the "+" or "-" symbol to expand or collapse a list is Workflowy's lone graphical flourish, a simplicity that has earned it cult status. A Google search for "Workflowy" reveals countless ways people are using it to fit their, uh, workflows.
WUNDERLIST: As a straightforward list-maker, Wunderlist (Wunderlist.com) has earned a huge user base with an intuitive and gorgeous interface, along with speedy syncing across devices. Grocery lists made using Wunderlist's desktop application sync in near-real time with your smartphone app, handy when you're banging out a
COST: Workflowy has a free tier that allows for 250 items per month. That may be enough for some, though the app's get-inand-get-out functionality makes the $4.99 monthly charge for unlimited lists and items, Dropbox support and formatting options more than worth it.

Our high-schoolers have a lot of milestones ahead of them: prom, graduation and college. At times, it may be tempting to relax the rules and let them celebrate with alcohol. But according to experts, that’s a big mistake. We’ve spent a lot of time teaching them to respect the rules, and if we start to make exceptions, we may send the signal that underage drinking is a “grey area.” More than ever, this is the time to maintain consistency; special events don’t call for special rules. Parting Thoughts
Of Monkeys & Marriage ARTICLE MOLLY WILLIAMS
T
hey say in space no one can hear you scream. I hope the same is true for 300 feet up in a Mexican jungle, flying between the mountain tops, tethered by a seat harness and hanging on for dear life. If not, I left some terrified monkeys in my wake. After 20 years of Mexican beach trips, I thought I knew what to expect: beachy days with my family under the palapa, foo-foo drinks in carved-out fruit topped with umbrellas, haggling in the flea market if we really wanted to step out. But last year a friend with whom we frequently travel, an otherwise very predictable and fairly proper woman, suggested we go zip-lining. After more than a bit of persuading, my husband and I, our 14-year-old daughter, and my friend and her husband booked a day trip for the mysterious sounding “canopy tour.” Although the tour company guaranteed our safety, it was considerably out of our comfort zone. The canopy in question is that of the jungle rooftop. We climbed straight up the sides of trees, on skinny slat steps, rounding through the jungle on stepping stones that took us ever higher. We were helmeted, harnessed and wrapped in safety gear, with heavy duty leather gloves for gripping the hooks, cables and pulleys that were the only things between us and the river winding through the rocks nearly 100 meters below. The activity leaders were expert, patient and took every precaution. When I was finally pushed out from the safety of my tree perch, the jungle fell away behind me, the lush valley opened out before me, and my heart leapt into my throat.

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | May 2015
It was gorgeous, wild, insanely exhilarating, and at least for me, very loud, as I didn’t even try to keep the shrieks in. Fourteen incredible swings from station to station later, we finally descended near the ground, and the adrenaline hadn’t even started to cool. My husband, behind me, was equally pumped by our adventure. He described it well, though. He said that if he had known what it entailed, he probably wouldn’t have gone, but he was thrilled that he had. That, to me, sums up so much. I realized that afternoon that the wildest adventure of all isn’t the excursion we sought out for vacation diversion, but the one he and I embarked upon more than 20 years ago, having no idea what it would entail. When we set out on our future together, we looked forward to champagne and tuxedos, followed by setting up a merry home filled with family and friends. If someone had told us then that we would occasionally have to hold on for dear life, cursing our impetuousness and screaming into a jungle that couldn’t answer, we probably would’ve stopped in our tracks down the aisle. But we would have missed the excitement and fulfillment of saying yes to things unpredictable and out of our comfort zone. Life together often feels like swinging free-style through the canopy. Sometimes the monkeys get terrified. But I wouldn’t have missed this adventure for the world. And even now knowing what it would entail, I would have gone.
