Be Adventuresome! F

riends often comment on how adventuresome they think I am. This sort of assessment baffles me a bit because I really do think of myself as a practical, play-itsafe, stay-in-my-comfort-zone kind of gal.

But then I think back to that first summer as a junior counselor at a camp in the beautiful North Woods of Minnesota. Several weeks into the summer I was asked if I’d like to co-lead a five-day canoe trip to the Boundary Waters with a veteran counselor. Sure, why not? And can someone give me a quick lesson in advanced paddling before we go? And am I correct when you say ‘portaging’ means we have to carry the canoes on our shoulders?!

Looking back, I think that trip was a turning point. Once you’ve succeeded at something so far outside of your normal world, outside of your comfort zone, a tiny little part of you realizes “If I did THAT, surely I can do this OTHER THING…”

Six years later I found myself looking at a brochure for the Avon Breast Cancer 3 Day. A 60 mile walk over three days with two nights spent in tent cities, and a fundraising effort for the disease that was now near and dear to my heart. I called a college friend and asked if she was up for a summer adventure. After a few months of training and a new pair of running shoes, we were off. We loved every minute of our three days of non-stop chatter and memory making.

chief executive officer | Steven Schowengerdt

Years later, I started jogging 5Ks, which eventually prompted my running partner to suggest a half marathon. This led to a dozen more half marathons, which meant I just HAD to try one full marathon, simply so I could put a check mark in THAT box. And suddenly people looked at me like I was a ‘real runner’ even though I insist that I simply jog long distances. And now, I suppose there is a part of me that thinks, yeah, I’ve done some pretty cool stuff. And I wouldn’t change a thing. And because of my experiences, I’ve made sure my boys tried some adventuresome new things like paddling those same Boundary Waters for five days. “Because if your Mom can do it with a group of 12-year-old girls, surely you can do it with the Boy Scouts…”

Around Town LSHS STUDENT EARNS HONOR Ian Nickens, a senior at Lee’s Summit High School, is among 3,100 students recently named “Outstanding Participants” in the annual Achievement Scholarship competition, according to officials at the National Achievement Scholarship Program. Students recognized with this honor are among the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 black Americans who requested consideration in the 2015 National Achievement Program when they took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. In late September, a roster of these students’ names, high schools and tentative college majors is sent to higher education admission officials. At the same time, principals are notified of their students who are being referred to colleges and receive a certificate for presentation to each student in recognition of his or her standing in the program. The National Achievement Program, conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding program participants.

The City of Lee’s Summit is the proud recipient of the “Outstanding Collection Program” award for RecycleFEST from the Missouri Recycling Association (MORA). Lee’s Summit’s Environmental Programs Manager Kara Taylor recently accepted the award at the MORA annual conference in Springfield. “Lee’s Summit was recognized for being a leader in waste diversion in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The City’s “RecycleFEST,” which debuted in 2014, allows citizens to drop off unusual items for recycling, including bicycles, athletic shoes, wine corks, hearing aids, license plates, pill bottles, keys and cell phones, among numerous other items,” says MORA President Dan Imig.

Around Town In addition to RecycleFest, Lee’s Summit also operates a Resource Recovery Park, a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility, two drop-off recycling centers, an Outdoor EcoClassroom and several waste diversion and environmental outreach programs.

DISTRICT’S ACT SCORES ARE WELL ABOVE NATIONAL AVERAGES Lee’s Summit R-7 School District students taking the ACT college-entrance test scored well above state and national averages, according to results recently released from the 2013-14 school year. R-7 students averaged a 23.5 on the composite score, compared to 21.8 for the Missouri average and 21 for the national average. A total of 993 Lee’s Summit R-7 students took the ACT test during the previous school year. This is 77.8 percent of the 2014 graduating class of all three high schools combined, and is a noteworthy increase over the percentages of test takers in past school years. Lee’s Summit High School, Lee’s Summit North High School and Lee’s Summit West High School graduated a total of 1,277 students in May 2014. R-7 students also scored above the state and national averages in all four specific subjects tested – English, mathematics, reading and science.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL RECEIVES NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON NOMINATION Our Lady of the Presentation (OLP) Catholic School is one of 337 schools in the nation recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2014. OLP was among the 50 private schools honored this year as a National Blue Ribbon School and was recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School. Formal recognition will be made at a ceremony on November 10 in Washington, D.C. The Department invites National Blue Ribbon School nominations from the top education official in every state. The Council for American Private Education (CAPE) nominates private schools that meet the criteria for recognition, and nominated OLP. All schools recognized in a performance category are based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates. Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

isa Stockam loved dragonflies. There was something about their ballet-like movement and almost effortless power as they soared through the air and scurried across the water that she envied. When she and her sister, Inger Brane, vacationed together in California a few years ago, Stockam decided, on a whim, to get a tattoo of a dragonfly. Brane, surprised at first, expected to see a tiny rendering of the colorful insect. However, that wasn’t her sister’s way. “The dragonfly tattoo that Lisa got was bigger than a bird,” Brane recalls with a smile. “But that was Lisa. If there was anything she wanted, she went after it 100 percent!” The dragonfly has been a symbolic creature in countless civilizations throughout time. Its vibrant, yet delicate flight across water represents an act of going beyond what is on the surface to truly understand the deeper aspect of existence. It symbolizes an emotional connection to the true meaning of life. It was the perfect mascot for Stockam, who embodied those same qualities during her fight for her life. 22

Stockam was only 37, and the mother to two young daughters, when she went to her doctor to explore why she wasn’t feeling well. Suffering from vague, yet persistent, symptoms – exhaustion, lack of appetite –she was eventually diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic with stage IV metastasized pancreatic cancer. “My family and I knew nothing about this disease when Lisa was diagnosed,” says Brane. “We threw ourselves into researching it, and nothing we saw on the internet was good news.” Pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the United States. It has a five-year survival rate of only 6 percent. Doctors told Stockam she had between three and six months to live. Stockam was determined to do everything she could to beat her odds. She began her clinical chemotherapy regimen immediately, and was able to receive treatments in her hometown of Joplin. During that time, Brane made countless trips to Joplin from her home in Lee’s

Summit to help Stockam and her daughters in any way she could. Although Stockam was in a fight for her life, she never stopped fighting for others as well. When the catastrophic tornado hit Joplin in 2011, she was out the next day helping families that were impacted by that disaster. Weakened by chemo, and her immune system so fragile that she had to wear a mask, she was determined to do all she could to help. Stockam died in January, 2013, after a two and half year battle with the disease. She was 40 years old. Reeling from grief, Brane reached out to an organization that she had read about online when she was researching her sister’s diagnosis. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN) had an affiliate in the Kansas City area, and a week after Stockam’s death, Brane sat in her car in the parking of the organization, trying to summon the energy to go inside. She was heartbroken and emotionally exhausted from her sister’s fight, and she didn’t know if she was ready to fight for others.

“I couldn’t stop crying, and I remember calling my husband for support,” says Brane. “But walking through that door was the best decision for me. Now I want to do everything I possibly can to help others who are on this journey. We are working to create hope for people suffering from this horrible disease.” PANCAN is a national organization that works to create hope for pancreatic cancer patients in a comprehensive way, through support, research, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. The organization raises money for direct research funding, as well as advocating for increased federal research funding for medical breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The organization’s motto is ‘Know it, fight it, end it!” There are several PANCAN events in the Kansas City area. Purple Light, which is held every October, is an emotional rally at Barney Allis Plaza, in which purple glow sticks are lit for every patient’s name, resulting in the entire park luminating in a purple glow. Purple Stride, which is held in May, is a 5K walk through Theis Park. Volunteering for these events, as well as doing everything she can to raise awareness and funding for pancreatic cancer research, Brane is enthusiastic about the progress PANCAN is making. She tries to wear something purple every day, as a tribute to her sister’s brave journey. A month after Stockam died, Brane and her husband traveled to Aruba for a healing vacation. As they walked along the beach, they realized a dragonfly was following them. Brane still gets chills when she recalls how long that dragonfly flew directly behind them. She was already planning to start a walk team in Stockam’s honor for Purple Stride, and she knew then that she would name the team Lisa’s Dragonflies. facebook.com/ABFamilyTalk © 2012 Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, MO

ucked away in the Douglas Station shopping center is Thai Spice, one of the top rated Thai restaurants in Kansas City. The space inside is decorated with Asian-inspired dĂŠcor with blue neon lighting. The seating area is long and narrow with a row of booths along one wall and table and chairs on the other. We arrived around 4:30 p.m. on a Saturday to beat the rush and Thai Spice was more than accommodating for our group of ten, putting together a long table for us. The aroma of all the fresh ingredients and spices ignited my taste buds. I love the Asian flavors of the soy, garlic and sesame but often avoid Asian restaurants because of MSG. I inquired and learned that since 2007, Thai Spice has been serving their authentic Thai food without MSG. Thai cuisine is internationally famous

for its flavors and Thai cooking uses a mixture of salt, pepper, garlic, curries and coriander along with a wide variety of herbs, leaves, roots and even flowers. I am so glad Thai Spice uses fresh ingredients to capture the flavors and can honestly say you can taste the difference. Thai Spice serves lunch and dinner, and both menus offer a variety of appetizers, soups and salads. The entrees are quite diverse and include vegetarian, meat and seafood options as well as a choice of rice or noodles, allowing you to create your perfect meal. When the appetizers came, my husband was very excited about the crab rangoon ($5.95) while I preferred the fresh spring rolls. ($5.95) The spring rolls are healthy and light with a delightful mixture of bean sprouts, fresh lettuce and tofu wrapped in rice paper. With so many of us, we decided to order a variety of dishes and share them family-style. Even my sister-in-law, who has serious diet restrictions,

was able to find some dishes that she could eat with just a couple of substitutions, which they graciously accommodated. I especially enjoyed the chicken Pad Thai. ($10.95) The crisp tender bean sprouts, cabbage and scallions along with perfectly cooked chicken and Pad Thai noodles with homemade sauce and crushed peanuts were delicious and perfectly spiced. As with most Thai restaurants you can choose the heat level, Thai Spice offers four levels of heat: mild, medium, hot and Thai hot. I prefer spicy food and ordered medium, which was quite spicy. Overall, it was quite tasty and I can now see why it receives such good ratings online. We had a delightful afternoon with good company, excellent service and great food. If you have not been to Thai Spice, it is worth going and if you do not have time for a sit down meal, you can always order take out. Thai Spice 1192 NE Douglas Rd. 816.347.9859 ThaiSpiceMK.com

A Test of Body and Mind LOCAL CLIMBING GYM BRINGS EXCITING VERTICAL SPORT TO THE PLAINS ARTICLE CHRISTOPHER CLARK | PHOTOGRAPHY MCKENNA MATHEWSON

R

oughly 650 miles separate Kansas Citians from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, where jagged peaks beckon climbers to test their physical and mental skills on some of the toughest terrain in the country. But if you’ve ever thought that climbing is more than a dangerous hobby for buffed-out, extreme-sports enthusiasts in the high country, the Ibex Climbing Gym in Blue Springs would like to change your mind. The gym bills itself as Kansas City’s premier indoor climbing facility, with more than 8,000 square feet of overhanging, vertical and slab terrain that everyone from beginners to seasoned climbers can scale to get a great and safe workout that will test both body and mind. “What we have is a facility dedicated to people encouraging one another to push ourselves to overcome our imaginary limits,” says Myles McCormick, Ibex gym’s general manager. “When we add that to the consistently new climbs that are being added, there is always something new to learn.” McCormick was working in the non-profit sector as a volunteer coordinator with the World Service Corps while holding down a part-time job at Ibex. In 2012, he was promoted to general manager. 26

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2014

“The first few weeks were difficult as I entered into an existing community that had been in place for 18 years at the time. The very people I was supposed to be protecting and watching over all knew one another – in some cases for 10-plus years. I definitely felt like quite the outsider. “I made a pledge to learn all of our regular members’ and climbers’ first and last names by the end of my first month. Talking to our customers and calling them by name really helped include me into the well-established groups that climbed on a recurring basis.” Unlike other workout routines, sport climbing requires two people – a climber and a partner who literally holds their climber’s lifeline, McCormick says. Larger groups can be seen working together to find different techniques to conquer specific climbs. The sport also combines physical obstacles with problem-solving, as climbers must constantly assess their spot on the climb and calculate their moves to make sure they can reach the next “hold” – the shaped grip that climbers grab or step on as they make their way up. “Climbing is not a mindless zombie activity, it requires your brain,” says McCormick. “I believe that people love to

in intense climbs. Ibex’ varied slabs can create all kinds of climbing scenarios, which means you’ll rarely, if ever, have the same workout twice. So, you’ll need lots of specialized equipment, like technical climbing shoes, ropes and carabiners, right? Nope, says McCormick. Just bring yourself and a sense of adventure. The gym’s introductory class, called “Ropes and What-Knot,” is aimed at getting participants scaling the gym’s 33-foot Big Wall that day. The course includes a two-week membership and all the necessary rental gear you’d need during that time. Once you’re hooked, the gym offers several membership options, or even day rates for one-off climbs. “At its core, climbing is a sport or a workout, though some profess it’s actually a way of life,” says McCormick. “Climbing is just like any other physical activity: the more you climb, the better you’ll climb. It’s that simple.”

learn and try new experiences, especially with people whose company they enjoy. What a perfect opportunity!” Make no mistake, climbing can be every bit as challenging a workout as weightlifting, running or other high-intensity exercise. In most situations, climbers use quick, explosive bursts to move from hold to hold – moves that can call on every major muscle group to get the job done. Arms, legs, back and the core all get a workout. And calories will be burned – up to 400 an hour

Kansas City’s Medicine Cabinet Helps Our Neighbors LOCAL ORGANIZATION FILLS EMERGENCY MEDICAL NEEDS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

E

ven under the Affordable Care Act, people all over Kansas City – even in areas you wouldn’t expect – still have to choose between buying food or buying necessary medications, or between paying the rent or purchasing a much-needed pair of eyeglasses. Shirley Johnson, for example, came to a local social service agency for utility assistance and, when it was time to sign the paperwork, she said, “Oh, let me get out my magnifying glass.” The case worker thought the reference was to a strong pair of glasses – until Johnson pulled a large magnifying glass from her purse. The glass had broken out of Johnson’s old bifocals, but she couldn’t afford to replace them. Fortunately, her case worker knew about Kansas City’s Medicine Cabinet, the metro area’s emergency medical assistance program. “When we step in, we’re helping someone in a crisis. They are often in pain and worried,” says Becky Schaid, executive director of the Baptist-Trinity Lutheran Legacy Foundation, which established the Medicine Cabinet in 2005. “The impact on individual lives is huge.” 28

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2014

The Medicine Cabinet provides short-term help for uninsured and underinsured Kansas Citians throughout the six-county metro for dental emergencies, diabetic supplies, durable medical equipment, prescription medication and vision care. Johnson qualified for assistance and left the social service agency with a voucher for an eye exam and new glasses. “I am so grateful to the Kansas City Medicine Cabinet for my new glasses,” says Johnson. “Now I can see clearly, drive safely and I no longer have to carry around a big magnifying glass!” Another Medicine Cabinet client, Otis Hampton, had to spend long hours on his feet in his job as a cook at an area hospital. That requirement had become very painful because Hampton had developed plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. Yet, when he sought a physician’s help, he learned that the cost for the special shoes and other equipment needed to help him stand for long hours was beyond his financial capacity. Directed to one of the 13 social service agencies with which the Medicine Cabinet works, Hampton qualified for assistance.

He received a voucher for special shoes and a brace for his right leg. “It made me so happy that (the Medicine Cabinet was) able to help me,” Hampton said. “How wonderful they are to do this for me!” In its first six months of operation, the Medicine Cabinet worked with one social service agency with three intake sites, and provided 266 services totaling $38,000. Since then, the program has grown year by year. “The short-term assistance the Medicine Cabinet provides helps until people get back on their feet,” says Schaid. “About 80 percent of them receive services only once.” Today, nearly 10 years later, the Medicine Cabinet has provided in excess of $3.8 million dollars for more than 21,000 services – and the need is increasing. The Medicine Cabinet so far this year has spent more than half a million dollars to aid nearly 2,500 clients. “The Medicine Cabinet fills a gap for

Kansas Citians who are uninsured or underinsured,” says Frank White, Kansas City Royals Hall of Famer. He and his wife Teresa have served as spokespersons for the Medicine Cabinet for the past three years. “More people need to know about this important program, which provides much-needed care for our Kansas City neighbors.” To help pay for those services, the Medicine Cabinet relies on support from caring members of the community. In its annual Coins for the Cabinet fundraiser, held each November, the Medicine Cabinet works with local schools and businesses to collect nickels, dimes and quarters. This small change can add up to big help for those in need. The Medicine Cabinet also holds an annual Tip-Off concert, which last year featured country duo Thompson Square at the Uptown Theater. The 2015 concert is planned for February, and the musical group will be announced soon. To learn more about the Medicine Cab-

inet, the Tip-Off Concert and Coins for the Cabinet, visit the Medicine Cabinet website at KCMedicineCabinet.org. “We are so fortunate to be able to offer the Medicine Cabinet program for the people of Kansas City,” says Schaid. “It’s an example of the community coming together to help each other.”

Terrific Teacher

Teacher Donates Time to Help Guide Children Through Grief Journey ARTICLE JANICE PHALEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Lukowski, Summit Lakes Middle School art teacher, Jewelee shares her artistic talents and her compassion for others to help children cope with loss as a volunteer for Solace House. For the past seven years, Lukowski has facilitated a support group for 10- to 12-year-old boys at Solace House, a grieving center for children, individuals and families who have experienced the death of a loved one. “The program is designed to guide the kids through the grief journey and provide coping skills,” says Lukowski. “The kids share, listen, learn and heal.” The Lee’s Summit teacher uses a curriculum that incorporates art therapy to help children honor their loved ones and manage their emotional issues while creating a work of art. Lukowski first became involved in Solace House following a difficult year at her school when both a staff member and a student passed away. At the same time, she was serving as School Assistance Program (SAP) chairperson for SLMS. At a meeting for SAP representatives, she heard a presentation from Solace House officials about how the organization could serve as a resource for students. “After hearing about Solace House, I knew that it was a place I wanted to be a part of,” says Lukowski. 30

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2014

At Solace House, she said she is grateful to be able to help the children get a little bit closer to finding happiness during the weekly sessions. “You cannot imagine the variety of experiences these children bring to the group,” she says. “Some are so horrific that I go home and cry. The amazing part is these young boys help each other because they have something so difficult in common.” Children involved in the program do not typically have friends to talk to about their loss, says Lukowski. “It is awesome the relationships that are built and the things that these kids share with each other. Usually, the entire family is involved in groups on the same evening so they can be healing together.” Lukowski added that Solace House is the only organization of its kind in the Midwest. Owned by KC Hospice, Solace House provides its services at no cost. “We are so lucky to have this non-profit organization in our community,” she says. “It is located in Kansas City, but I have had numerous children from Lee’s Summit and even several who attend my school in my group.” For more information about Solace House, visit KansasCityHospice.org/ GriefSupport-SolaceHouse/Index.htm.

Vision Correction Without Surgery W

hen I was in third grade, my mother took me to an optometrist who diagnosed me as having myopia or near-sightedness. My options were to wear glasses or rigid contacts. I started wearing glasses and when I became a teenager I was fit with rigid contacts and eventually with soft lenses. As I grew my near-sightedness got progressively worse. This myopia was so extreme I couldn’t see my alarm clock when I took off my contacts and I needed a night light so I could find my way during the night. Eventually I had LASIK (refractive surgery) on both eyes and could see my alarm clock again. This treatment was done in my thirties and now that I’m in my forties I have developed some near-sightedness again. This isn’t a bad thing because I can read without glasses now, while many friends are searching for their reading glasses. Our son began developing myopia in fourth grade. Since I am an optometrist, I began exploring options to slow the progression of his myopia. There has been some success with children wearing rigid oxygen permeable contacts during the day to correct their vision which often slowed the progression. My myopia had slowed down during the years I wore rigid lenses, but increased more rapidly when I switched to soft contacts. Some studies show rigid contacts slow down myopia progression while others show no solid proof. My wife, who is also an optometrist, and I decided to look into Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) for our son. We heard this treatment had varying results and weren’t sure if it was something we wanted to invest our time in, but it was more than worth it. We learned this treatment corrects myopia in certain amounts of prescription and also holds the prescription to where it was pre-treatment, as long as the patient continues wearing the lenses at night. This meant a child’s myopia could be corrected during the day, and hold to their present prescription without developing that extreme near-sightedness. People who become extremely near-sighted have significantly higher risk of developing other eye diseases. We knew there were optometrists on the west coast who had been prescribing these lenses, so we met with these practitioners, researched the procedure and became certified. 32

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2014

CRT results in corrected vision without daily glasses, contacts or surgery. It involves a specially designed, therapeutic contact lens. This lens is worn while sleeping and reshapes the cornea without permanently altering the corneal physiology. This treatment is comparable to the permanent reshaping that is done to adult eyes with LASIK or PRK surgery. Surgical procedures generally cannot be done on the eyes of children and teens because they are still maturing. CRT uses night-time only rigid oxygen permeable contacts worn during sleep. The lenses are computer generated and slightly more flexible than some rigid contacts, and they gently change the shape of the front of the eye. Not all types of prescriptions can be treated successfully with CRT. The best candidates are individuals with mild to moderate near-sightedness and minimal astigmatism. People under age 40 have good results; however children and young adults between the ages of 7 and 25 are the best candidates. During an examination by a certified optometrist each patient is evaluated to determine if he or she is a good candidate for CRT. Care of the lenses as well and insertion and removal techniques are discussed. Several visits may be required over the first six months to obtain and maintain acceptable vision. Acceptable vision is usually 20/25 to 20/20 vision. After the first six months patients are monitored every six months to every year, replacing their lenses every year. Many studies have shown that CRT is a viable option to control or slow the progression of myopia. Near sighted children with two near-sighted parents are good candidates if the child is fit when the myopia is mild to moderate. All contacts have an increased risk of eye infection or inflammation. CRT has the same risk, therefore should be worn with the same caution afforded to any contact lens. Our son was successfully fit with CRT lenses and his prescription has remained stable the last four years. This healthful information provided by Dr. Scott Drake, optometrist at Custom Eyes. HELP - My Child Turned 18 and the Law Has Stripped Me of My Parenting Rights! A

fter spending a lifetime making parenting decisions regarding your child, the law enforces some harsh realities when it comes to influencing your teenager’s medical, financial, and educational decisions at the magic age of 18. Accepting that the law will not allow for exceptions just because you are a well meaning parent with your child’s best interest at heart is the first step to researching the viable alternatives to help you represent your young adult child when they might not understand how to navigate their newly acquired responsibilities. What? You can’t keep medical information from me regarding my child because I’m paying the bills and they are a dependent on my medical insurance! Not only will your child’s doctor withhold medical diagnoses, test results and treatment plans from you regarding your 18 year old, you won’t be getting information from the business office to manage insurance claims and pay your child’s bills. Under HIPPA, your child’s privacy rights supersede your entitlements as a parent. Having spoken 34

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2014

for your child since birth, parents are often caught off guard regarding their rights when students cross into legal adulthood. In the academic arena, FERPA laws protect the privacy rights of young adults. Although parents may be picking up the tab for costly college tuition, your student will receive the bill and you will not have access to their transcript. Case law made this clear when a college student dropped his dad off at work on the way to a local community college. The dad became ill and called the school requesting his student be contacted and sent back to the office to take him home. When the security guard shared with the parent that his son had dropped out of school two months earlier, the student won a hefty lawsuit. The law will protect the privacy of the student regardless of who is covering the tuition. Our children should understand what happens legally when they age into adulthood. Although this provides liberating privileges, it also exacerbates the consequences levied when held to adult stan-

dards. Clearly communicate your expectations within your family. What medical information do you expect to know and where will you respect your student’s privacy? What conditions should be present for insurance premiums and medical costs to be paid? Will your student feel comfortable signing so that you can have access to their records or will they want to be coached on how to advocate for themselves? Have frank discussions about how emergencies should be handled on their behalf. Academics provide another area for conversation. At this maturational level, students at the college level should be ready to navigate his or her day-to-day educational experience. When parents contact the school officials it can create the impression that the student isn’t ready for a post secondary academic experience. Let your student know under what conditions you are willing to pay for their college education. To protect your financial investment, you can validate their privacy and still require they provide a planned course of study, verification of enrollment choices, and end of semester transcript grades before you will pay the next semester’s bills. There are three documents every family should consider for legal protection as children transition into adulthood. The first is a HIPPA release that provides designation of named persons to have access to medical records. The second is a Medical Power of Attorney that doesn’t allow for the overriding of personal care decisions but allows decisions to be made if the young adult is incapacitated. The Durable Power of Attorney allows parents to make financial decisions on behalf of their student. This can be particularly necessary if you have invested college funds in their name and social security number. Consult your attorney for comprehensive legal advice but an online search will access these forms. Don’t wait to have these important conversations with your emerging adult and make sure you consider these critical legal protections. Rebecca Murphy taught in the Shawnee Mission School District for 32 years and is now CEO of Maximize Your Parenting Potential.

A True MAGGIE EVERSON, MISS RODEO MISSOURI

ARTICLE HEATHER TRENT BEERS PHOTOGRAPHY ANDREA GRIST & PROVIDED

S

unset Trails Stables is a 38-acre gem set in the city limits of Lee’s Summit. Riding lessons are the main attraction here, but in addition to the nearly 90 horses, you’ll also find a mule, a donkey, sheep, goats, chickens, ten barn cats, and four potbellied pigs. Come spring, you might even get to see some bottle-fed calf action. And running the whole menagerie is 23-year-old Maggie Everson, a true cowgirl and this year’s Miss Rodeo Missouri to boot. Everson comes by her western way of life honestly. Her dad’s family owned a dude ranch in Montana, and her mom hails from a farm in western Kansas. With western life coursing through her DNA, Everson worked hard in 4-H, where she learned leadership and public speaking. She also uncovered her passion for horse showing and barrel racing. Before long, she was competing in the Missouri-Kansas Youth Rodeo Association (MKYRA) and the Missouri High School Rodeo Association. She improved her skills in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping and queen competition. Numerous championship titles followed, one of which was the 2008 MKYRA all-around champion cowgirl. HORSE SENSE AT COLLEGE

College followed naturally for Everson. As a 2013 graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Marketing, with a Certificate in Sales and Customer Development. Although college life took her far from the stables, Everson’s love of animals followed her to school, which was against the rules of her apartment building: No cats or dogs allowed. Like any law-abiding cowgirl, Everson dutifully left her cats and dog at home. Instead, along came Miss Piggy and Kermit, her potbellied pigs. Everyone fared well, and those pigs added twin boys to their family this spring: Fat Boy and Chunky.

BACK AT THE RANCH

The stables at Sunset Trails bustle with activity, especially in summer and during after-school hours. Various families board 32 horses in the pastures there, and kids and adults alike swarm the stables for riding lessons. The stalls board 55 horses, 15 of which are Sunset Trails lesson horses. Old horses—which are treated like family—are put to pasture in back of the family’s house next door in what Everson affectionately refers to as the “geriatric ward.” An 80-year-old historic “upper barn” sits near the road and houses 20 horses downstairs and one full-time ranch hand in an upstairs apartment. Two outdoor arenas are available for lessons, and an indoor arena is handy when it’s wet or cold outside. GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS

rades and professional rodeos to represent Missouri, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), and the western way of life. She visits hospitals and schools, signs autographs, and serves at professional rodeos by readying the cows, bulls and horses for their events. As an active member of Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church, she also enjoys traveling as Miss Rodeo Missouri to “cowboy churches” around the country. This December, Everson will compete in Las Vegas for the title of Miss Rodeo America. She will be judged in speech, modeling, interviewing and horsemanship. Even though she’ll ride western at the nationals, Everson practices all of the disciplines every day—western, English, saddle seat, dressage—to fine tune her skills. And after that? Everson insists she wants to continue her work at Sunset Trails. “I love working with the kids, and I’d love to grow our community involvement,” she says. “It’s not about money. It’s about providing families with good experiences. And Sunset Trails is a piece of heaven on earth.”

Everson comes by her western way of life honestly. Her dad’s family owned a dude ranch in Montana, and her mom hails from a farm in western Kansas.

Everson’s dad owns Target Directional Drilling, and her mom works for HCA Midwest. Brother Ethan is a junior at Lee’s Summit High School and sister Anna is a sophomore at the University of Kansas. To keep the family business running smoothly, Everson returned home after graduation and assumed daily operations of their business. Everson is talented, but she can’t do it all alone. She relies on the help of 15 part-time instructors to teach lessons and two fulltime work hands to maintain the stalls, feed all the horses twice a day, and turn the horses out for “horse recess.” Everson’s least favorite part of the job is staying inside to tend the books. She’d much rather hang out with the kids. In addition to leading one of the largest 4-H clubs in the state, she also teaches horseback riding and has developed one of the busiest and most-successful youth equine programs in the Kansas City area. QUEEN FOR A YEAR

In September 2013, Everson was crowned Miss Rodeo Missouri. In this role, she appears around the country in pa-

“The horsemanship event at nationals is tricky,” says Everson, “because you have to ride a horse you’ve never met before. And you have to perform two rounds of patterns, one chosen by the judges, and one 2-minute freestyle pattern of your choosing.” Everson misses the camaraderie she experienced at college. “So my favorite thing about being Miss Rodeo Missouri is the people I meet,” she says. “Especially the awesome friendships I’m developing with other state queens.”

MOSEY BY

Drop by and say howdy to Everson and her staff. Not much for riding? That’s okay. You can bring treats for the horses (peppermints, apples and carrots). Just be sure to check in at the office first. Once you’re there, don’t be surprised if you have an urge to take a lesson or ride. As our own Miss Rodeo Missouri says, “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a family!”

TO THE FUTURE AND BEYOND

When her Miss Rodeo reign is complete, Everson will use her Miss Rodeo Missouri scholarship to work on her master’s in business administration at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. “I believe in giving things my full focus and doing them right,” she says, “so I’ll start my master’s when I feel I can do both of those things well.”

Wetlands A Wild Experience Awaits in the

SQUAW CREEK PROVIDES REFUGE FOR OUR NATIONAL BIRD ARTICLE ELIZABETH ROSENBERGER | PHOTOGRAPHY JIM MCCONNELL

C

alling all wildlife watchers, shutterbugs and anyone else who wants a ‘wild’ experience in the wetlands. Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge is hosting its 34th annual Eagle Days event November 30 through December 2. Located in northern Missouri, the refuge sprawls across the lowlands offering 7,415 acres of wetlands, grasslands and forests along the eastern edge of the Missouri River flood plain – the perfect winter retreat for eagles, snow geese and other wildlife. More than 400 bald eagles will end up migrating to the refuge by late fall and early winter and on occasion, a golden eagle may be seen during the migration peak; usually by the first of December. Bald eagles migrate to Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge to seek out open water and wetlands. Both of which also attract snow geese and waterfowl that are hunted by the bald eagle. Corey Kudrna, wildlife refuge specialist at Squaw Creek says snow geese and other waterfowl continue to take refuge in the wetlands. 42

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2014

“If we’re lucky, snow provides a beautiful backdrop to all the wildlife at Squaw Creek,” says Kudrna. “Visitors can take a tour of the refuge by bus which will stop at specific sites for viewing or in hopes of spotting the eagles.” Missouri Master Naturalists and students from area universities volunteer at the specific interpretive sites that also provide spotting scopes for a better view of the various water fowl and wildlife. “We have an average of 5,000 visitors each year,” says Kudrna. “There is a 10-mile loop around the wetlands where visitors can drive by car and enjoy the surroundings.” The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is a partner in presenting this free event along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Friday’s events are reserved for school groups that have made arrangements to participate in advance. On Saturday and Sunday, Eagle Days activities will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., including a driving tour of the refuge wetlands.

Programs with live, captive eagles will be presented on Saturday each hour on the hour from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m on Saturday and from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m on Sunday. “Staff from Dickerson Park Zoo hosts the captive eagle exhibitions which provide our visitors to learn more about our national bird and emblem, its habitats and life cycle,” says Kudrna. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt by Executive Order established the refuge as a feeding and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. Almost 80 years later, Squaw Creek Wildlife Refuge remains true to its roots. The refuge was officially named one of America’s top 500 Globally Important Bird Areas by the American Bird Conservancy in 2001. The Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network designated Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge a “Site of Regional Importance” in 2007. In the late ‘70’s, when the eagle population was low, the refuge started a Hacking Program (process where they bred and raised captive eagles) to increase the population and create a refuge for them during the winter months. “Squaw Creek lies between the Mississippi and Central Flyways of the U.S. which brings birds from all over the North – Canada, South Dakota and Minnesota,” explains Kudrna. “Eagles switch over to eating waterfowl during this season and that is what attracts them to come back to the refuge every year.” Cassie Treymar from Lee’s Summit has attended the event for the past three years and says it’s an adventure for her three boys ranging from ages 13 to seven. Every year, they load up the minivan with packed lunches, cameras, sketch books and binoculars to head north for the day at Squaw Creek. For the Treymar family,

it’s more than a huge learning experience, but a way to capture the wonder of nature around them with a fun, family event. “We are truly ‘city people,’” says Cassie. “But this gives our family an opportunity to glimpse nature at its best. The boys love it and enjoy snapping photos and drawing pictures of the wildlife they see firsthand other than what they’ve seen on a CONTINUED > cable documentary.”

Treymar says the programs the refuge offers are topnotch. Last year they attended one of the programs that exhibit live captive eagles – an up close and personal experience that any wildlife lover must see – and the boys talked about it for months. Visitors can reach the refuge headquarters easily. It is located on U.S. highway 159 South. The refuge headquarters and visitor contact station is open on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. The station is also open weekends during the migration in the fall from mid-October thru early December and the spring from mid-March thru early May except on federal holidays. Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge provides excellent wildlife viewing along the 12.5-mile auto tour road and nature trails. Viewing platforms and wayside exhibits give visitors vantage points for wildlife observation. From a high point on the Loess Bluff Trail, hikers can view the Missouri River floodplain. Know Before You Go The refuge is open from sunrise to sunset daily. Closing hours are posted at refuge entrances. Restrooms are available at the headquarters and comfort station in the headquarters parking lot. The MDC website recommends comfortable walking shoes and warm heavy clothing in winter. There will be one food booth set up during Eagle Days that will be selling snacks, hot dogs, hot choco44

ropped against the Ozark Mountains’ lush foothills and situated on the Arkansas River is Tulsa—a congenial sprawl of a city that pulses with art, architecture, food, recreation, music and shopping. Tulsa is a city of surprises and a heady trifecta of old, modern and natural: Stunning art deco buildings (remember to look up for the captivating details) and elegant turn-of-the-century mansions mingle with glass-and-steel high rises in a landscape abundant with woodsy parks, biking and walking trails and water features. A cool city that takes pride in its rich oil heritage and historic claim as the “Birthplace of Route 66,” Tulsa embraces its strengths and flaunts the crop of 21st century creative entrepreneurs who are opening everything from hip bars and farm-to-table restaurants to world-class museums and boutiques. Close enough to Kansas City for a long weekend—door-to-door in about four hours—Tulsa has more than enough to see and do for a 36-hour weekend or a seven-day vacation. Tulsa’s vibe is organic and welcoming, with options tailor-made for family adventures, girls’ weekends, couples’ getaways, single travelers, foodies, art aficionados and music fans. Here are some highlights to start planning your own nonstop, fun-filled Tulsa weekend. And once you’ve dipped your toes in what T-Town has to offer, you’ll want to come back and discover everything you missed the first time around.

For Kansas Citians, searching out good barbecue in other cities is almost like a sport—we like to stack our familiar ribs and brisket and beans and slaw against out-of-towners’ versions. Oklahoma has a style all its own, whether you have lunch at Albert G’s original location, a refurbished gas station at 2748 S. Harvard, and order perfectly-charred ribs, cinnamon-laced beans or a surprising side of Mediterranean-style tabouli or go to Burn Co. at 1738 Boston Ave., a newcomer to Tulsa’s barbecue scene for The Fatty sandwich (bacon wrapped around ground sausage and hot links), smoked bologna or barbecue chicken drumsticks. The real reason anyone visits a barbecue joint is just as evident in Tulsa as it in Kansas City: ribs, pulled pork chicken, turkey, brisket, the United Nations of meats slapped between buns. Pump bottles with hot, mild and sweet sauces. Drips of juice wiped from chins with thin paper napkins. Savoring of a tradition, a city’s ode to barbecue, a chance to be one with the ‘cue. Amen. Justin Thompson, chef owner and founder of a quartet of Tulsa’s hottest restaurants—Juniper, Prhyme, Tavalo and 624 Kitchen and Catering—loves his native city. So much that when Thompson was pondering where he wanted to establish his career, the choice was natural. “It was important to stay in my hometown and help make it a better place,” says Thompson, known as one of Tulsa’s best and top philanthropic chefs. In addition to running his acclaimed restaurants, Thompson thrives on building relationships within the community and mentoring his staff of nearly 100 employees. Giving back to Tulsa is a staple on Thompson’s menu and part of his business plan—on any given weekend, in addition to regular business and catering events, he is attending a charity function, giving away creative packages for nonprofit auctions or hosting a party. No trip to Tulsa would be complete without a meal (or two) at one of Thompson’s eateries: Juniper, a seasonal, farm-totable concept; Tavalo, an Italian bistro; Phryme, a downtown steakhouse; and 624 Kitchen and Catering that serves a sumptuous Sunday brunch in a spectacular Art Deco setting.

Kneaded Specialties HOMEGROWN, GLUTEN-FREE BAKERY BRINGS THE JOY BACK TO FOOD FOR THOSE SUFFERING FROM DISEASES OR ALLERGIES ARTICLE ANN E. BUTENAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

hen you suffer from dietary restrictions due to diseases or allergies, it can often feel as if food, typically the center of our lives, is no longer an enjoyable aspect. Fortunately, there is a gluten-free bakery in town that understands this. “I wanted to start a bakery that would give people their lives back. Food is such an important part of life, and an autoimmune disease or food allergy shouldn’t take the joy of food from you. And it doesn’t have to. Our promise is to fully satisfy taste buds without compromising health,” says Kneaded Specialties proprietor Sherry McGarrah. Often, necessity is the mother of invention, and McGarrah is no exception to that philosophy. As a child, she broke

out in hives constantly and endured a regimen of daily allergy shots. Throughout her formative years, she struggled with anemia and vomiting for no apparent reason. By the time she reached adulthood, she also struggled with infertility. After visiting numerous doctors and underdoing countless tests and physical exams, she was inaccurately informed over the course of a decade that she had Irritable Bowel Syndrome, depression, anorexia, and the most injurious diagnosis of all: “It’s in your head.” After plummeting to just 80 pounds, her doctor tested her for Celiac disease, and once diagnosed, a dark cloud finally gave way to understanding how she could embrace her life again. The solution rested in changing her diet. As she learned all she could about the disease, she adopted a gluten-free diet. “Within the first few months, one by one, several of my family members were diagnosed with the disease,” recalls McGarrah. “We thought the enjoyment of food was over.” (Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune disease that does not allow for the

absorption of nutrients. Statistics have shown that one out of 130 people will test positively for this disease.) Resigned to the possibility of a life without the mouth-water i ng pleasures of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving or fresh bread at dinner seemed like a prison sentence for her taste buds. Additionally, her love of baking and cooking were pushed to the wayside. “Two of my favorite pastimes were something I wanted to avoid,” she notes. Determined to find the light through all of this, she soon reawakened her culinary prowess and through much trial and error, began to make desserts that were so tasty that family members had to look twice at the ingredients, causing them to question if the treats were truly gluten-free. The Incredible River Journey of Two Sisters ARTICLE BRIAN ROSE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S

ummer is often a time of year where most people look forward to finding things to do that allow them to take it easy for a change. They may go to the pool, take longer walks in the park or sit by a lake and soak in the sun. That wasn’t the case for Jane Monroe and Jody Carroll, two power-house sisters who set out to accomplish one of the hardest kayak races in the state of Missouri this past summer. The Missouri 340 race is an endurance race that tests you physically and mentally as you paddle from Kansas City to St. Charles. Each contestant brave enough to accept the challenge is given 88 hours to complete the race and if you miss certain checkpoints throughout the course you are disqualified. This year there were 230 contestants, of whom 189 finished. Included in these 189 were two Lees Summit sisters who never dreamed of competing in such an event. Jane, the owner of Embrace the Grape beverage catering, laughed as she said, “I told Jody, when she first asked me if I would do this with her that she must be out of her mind because there’s no way in the world I’d be able to do something that intense.” Jody insisted this would be a memory they would never forget. With much hesitation, Jane agreed and the sisters began training for the race. They’ve always been impressed by the Missouri River. Aside from the gorgeous scenery and family-friendly venues along its shores, the RiverRelief.org team has spent a lot of time and money cleaning up the river and getting the public engaged in events on the river. When Jane and Jody decided to commit to the race, they quickly began training for it. 56

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2014

“We wanted to go into it with a great strategy so we began training in early February at Lee’s Summit Legacy Park in their RevUp program. It was great to have a professional trainer who could help us focus on our goal. We also swam and worked out together to keep one another motivated,” says Jody. The two didn’t want to leave anything to chance so they decided to go the extra mile and train on the river using shorter organized races like the Epic Shootout and Freedom Race along with independent 70-mile training paddles. This helped them to learn each other’s paddle rhythms, get use to the currents and how to most effectively read their GPS navigator on the river. “I remembered thinking the night before the race that all I wanted us to do was complete the race. That was my goal,” says Jane. The sisters intentionally laid out a schedule for food and water breaks so they would keep a steady pace on the river. As you would expect of something of this magnitude, this race didn’t come without its challenges. “We would paddle for 110 miles and then pull off to sleep for 2 hours, paddle another 105 miles and sleep for a few more hours just to regain some energy,” says Jane. At times, the bugs, blistering sun and hours of paddling made them want to give up. When that happened they would play a racing playlist on their iPod, motivate one another through laughter and keep on paddling. “There’s no one in the world I would have rather been out there with than my sister,” they both agreed. Early on the third day, they came to a crossroad point in the CONTINUED >

race where a thick fog had covered the river and they were paddling blind, all alone, at 6 a.m. There wasn’t one voice to be heard for miles. The only sounds were the wildlife around them as they held tightly onto their flashlights knowing fog and fatigue could cause them to loose focus and make a mistake. In these instances paddlers have found themselves actually paddling against the current because they can’t see the river’s edge to keep them grounded. However, because they trained together and properly prepared themselves, they were able to navigate their way through the fog and find their checkpoint. They give a lot of the credit for how they were able to keep such a great pace to their incredible ground crew. Their entire family pulled together to ensure that Jane and Jody had everything they needed to succeed. “Everyone would drive ahead of us and meet us at certain checkpoints and have food and water ready for us. They kept us motivated,” says Jane. Their other sister, Nancy, was watching the race unfold online from her home in Germany. Jody laughed as she went on to say, “It would be criminal if we

didn’t mention our mother who we call ‘the saint.’ She paid for a hotel room so we could get showered and a few more hours of sleep before the last stretch of the race. It was just what we needed.” During the paddle there were hours that would go by without either one of them saying a word. They were able to witness the majestic view of two bald eagles soaring through the air along the banks of the river. “Yes our bodies hurt, we were exhausted beyond belief and there were moments where we would ask ourselves what in the world were we thinking doing something like this. But then again, we felt so alive out there on that water that it was all worth it,” says Jody. They finished the race in 64 hours and 29 minutes, winning the tandem women division. “It’s these types of events in life that remind us what living is all about,” says Jane. “To cross the finish line and share that moment with my husband, four kids, sister and mother is something I’ll never forget.”

Our Town Lake Lotawana resident, Roger Dutton, designed and hand carved a 9 ½ foot totem pole and donated it to the Lake Lotawana Children’s Park this September. After retiring in 1999, the Duttons built a second home in Colorado. It was a log home fabricated in British Columbia. The totem pole was carved from a log leftover from the home construction. He had no experience in carving but decided to attempt it as a hobby. On a trip to Alaska he photographed all the totems he saw between Vancouver and Alaska and acquired all the literature he could find. He designed this totem from photographs and illustrations in the literature. Dutton started carving the totem during his summer in Colorado and brought the uncompleted totem home to KC. He was approached by David Walsh, mayor of Lake Lotawana, and asked if he would be willing to donate the totem to the Children’s’ Park at the lake. He told Dave he would gladly donate the totem as it “needed a good home.”

Parting Thoughts

The Family Travel Agent has Heavy Baggage WORDS DENISE SNODELL

T

he saying goes, “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.” But this philosophical gem needs a prequel: “It’s also about planning the journey.” I know from experience that being the person who puts the trip together is a wild adventure in itself. There’s research turbulence. Off-the-rail surprises. Emotional road-burn. It’s a role in life where I sputter, because somehow, I wound up being the sole household travel agent. I don’t like it. It seems every family has one designated vacation planner— the sucker who has to deal with calendars, airline websites, endless travel reviews, and most of all, a generalized sense of throwing darts into a void. There was a time in history when humans who wanted to travel visited other humans who sat in offices with Neolithic computers—the kind with cathode ray tube monitors that had magical connections to airlines and tour guides and hotels. I loved that era. Travel agents were like Starbucks baristas. People needing a vacation fix could walk through glassy agency doors on almost any block. They’d see posters of palm trees, the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa soaking up the fluorescent lights. This was all so comforting—a 3-dimensional expert with a nice hair-do was going get you to faraway places. You’d just sit in a cushy chair, name a time, place and budget and say yes or no. I miss the living, breathing travel agents who knew what they were doing. I’m not sure where they took off to, but they’re gone. They have been replaced by the likes of…me. Stupid internet. Stupid progress. Every time I turn around, it seems I’m awkwardly dot-coming my way around time zones. And no matter how often I hit the “purchase” icon, when I’m on the

actual trip, something goes wrong, ranging from renting a clunker car to sleeping overnight on airport terminal carpeting. I blame most of this on Bill Gates, and some of it on “Priceline Negotiator” William Shatner. Both of whom I’m sure have private jets and personal assistants who handle their journeys. To make things worse, the past several years my family has had constant travel needs. Two sons, a year apart, went on countless college tours, scholarship interviews and second looks near and far. That overlapped with visiting my parents who live 1,000 miles away. A few actual vacations to new places were thrown in the mix, along with the boys moving to two different universities. One kid wound up kinda far, which means my fingers now reflexively type “Travelocity” while I sleep. So what have I learned as the family travel agent? Here’s the short list. 1. Aforementioned William Shatner is not really negotiating for you. 2. Hotels in college towns during football/family weekends have been fully booked since 1972. 3. Same goes for every hotel in the world during spring break week. 4. Fantastic round-trip flight deals are only to Akron. 5. You will one day find yourself sitting on a bench in Central Park, staring at your cell phone to nab an A-group boarding pass. 6. You will get a C-group boarding pass. 7. Four-star hotels are really 1 ½ star hotels. 8. After renting a “non-smoking” car, you’ll need a prescription for a nicotine patch. 9. You will read horrifying Trip Advisor reviews AFTER you book a nonrefundable vacation. 10. Wherever you go, pack aspirin. Scratch that. Pack a large flask.
