Right Now, A Real Hot Mess I WAITED TO WRITE MY LETTER FOR NOVEMBER AFTER I FINISHED WATCHING THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE. This month’s issue will hit your mailbox and our websites several days before election day. Since California is voting entirely by mail-in ballot, many of us, me included, will be casting a ballot as soon as we receive it in the mail. I have been voting by mail since I was in the Air Force many years ago and I have never stopped. It works for me! I look forward to driving to the Civic Center in Thousand Oaks and placing my completed ballot in the ballot mail drop. Robin’s ballot

Our magazines, Conejo Valley Lifestyle and Malibu Coast Lifestyle, serve all of you, and we focus on family, community, the arts, health and wellness, education, travel, giving back… you know, all those everyday things that make our lives better. Politics is for TV and the newspapers. However, since as I mentioned earlier, Robin and I have just finished watching the first 2020 Presidential Debate, I do have to say that it is time that we—by that I mean you and I, everyday citizens—took our society and our country back. three-store operation, which includes Encino Fireplace Shop and Floyd S. Lee Fireplace in Pasadena. Malinowski notes that their premium hearth product lines include Heat n Glo fireplaces, Heatilator fireplaces, Flare fireplaces, Montigo fireplaces, Modern Flame and Dimplex electric fireplaces, and Rasmussen gas logs and accessories. “We also carry Prism Hardscape, Pyromania and The Outdoor Plus outdoor gas fire pits.” In addition to the traditional wood-burning and new and efficient direct-vent gas fireplaces, electric fireplaces are becoming increasingly popular due to the environment and ease of installation. “These fireplaces are getting more realistic each time a new model comes out,” says Malinowski, noting that they are available as traditional or linear modern models. “They are a far cry from the old orange lightbulb and rotating foil drum that used to be on the market. Some communities are being built as all electric communities, so it is nice to have an electric fireplace line to offer these customers.” When it comes to the “outdoor room,” this is a concept that has been thriving for quite some time. “The idea of converting extra square footage outdoors as livable space is very popular and dramatically increases a home’s value,” explains Malinowski, whose business also specializes in designing and building outdoor kitchens. Their barbecue product lines include Twin Eagles grills, Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, Luxor grills, Delta Heat grills, Kamado Joe ceramic cookers, Alfa pizza ovens, and Mr. BBQ accessories. “Some are as simple as a small island with a grill and access doors, and some rival any chef’s professional cooking space,” Malinowski says. “We sell high-quality lines that

ORBIT HOMES: AC C O M M O DAT I N G CHANGING TIMES

THIS YEAR HAS BEEN DISRUPTIVE, TO SAY THE LEAST, WITH CRISES OF HEALTH AND ECONOMY AND A FEROCIOUS START TO FIRE SEASON. Many are wondering how this year’s events will change our lives in the long term and what businesses are emerging to address today’s challenges. One of the industries experiencing growth and change this year is the housing industry. Orbit Homes, a prefabricated housing company, began selling to residents who lost their homes in the Woolsey Fire and has seen an increased demand for “family compounds” and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) since March. Orbit Homes is a family business with more than a decade of experience in traditional construction and building in remote islands and rural areas. After the Woolsey Fire, the team redirected their efforts to designing and selling prefabricated homes that help homeowners rebuild faster and more affordably. Their Malibu showroom showcases a 900-square-foot unit, and homes range in size from 450 to 3,000 square feet. When quarantining began, changing many people’s routines, Orbit Homes started receiving different inquiries. Clients began

BUILDING DREAMS YEARS OF EXPERIENCE & QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP GO INTO EVERY HOME

DONNELLY INNOVATIONS, A GENERAL CONTRACTING FIRM FOCUSED ON HIGH-END REMODELING AND NEW CONSTRUCTION IN VENTURA, LOS ANGELES AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES, IS IN HIGH DEMAND. Its owner, Michael Donnelly, began by remodeling homes back in 1974, and then set out to master every trade involved in the construction industry. “I’ve been doing high-end remodeling for the last 45 years,” says Michael. What makes Donnelly Innovations stand out from other general contractors, he says, is a wealth of knowledge and a great understanding of structural design concepts backed by engineering. Master craftsmanship is maintained in all phases of construction; many of his employees have been with him for over 25 years. “Each employee is tooled up and proficient in many areas of the remodeling process,” he says. “Every tradesman is aware of all the procedures involved and has a keen eye on the overall project along with full-time supervisors.” “The key to the highest level of work being performed is understanding it as a finished project before even starting it,” he says. “This makes it easy to catch any errors and make any corrections as the job is proceeding. That’s why you have to be there every day.” When hiring a contractor, says Michael, do your research. “Look for someone with experience and accountability, make sure they are licensed and insured, and contact past clients,” he says. Michael is also well-versed in the latest trends and what appeals to his clients. Telescoping doors are often requested. With these, the walls can be completely opened up, so you’re not closed off behind a door or windows. They basically bring the outdoors in. Also, the electronics that go into these houses are very complex, explains Michael. Most things, such as light and sound controls, shades, alarms, televisions and air conditioning, can be controlled through your phone or tablet. “The most important thing we do is build relationships,” says Michael. “We create a partnership with each client by listening carefully to their needs and responding efficiently. This approach truly sets us apart and enables us to deliver superior results.” To learn more, visit DonnellyInnovations.com or call 805.377.0852.

Malibu Opts for 100% Renewable Energy LAST MONTH MARKED THE SHIFT TO 100% RENEWABLE POWER GENERATED BY SOLAR, WIND AND OTHER RENEWABLE AND CARBON-FREE RESOURCES IN CALIFORNIA AND THE SURROUNDING REGION FOR MALIBU’S CLEAN POWER ALLIANCE CUSTOMERS. The Malibu City Council approved the selection of 100% Green Power as the default electricity choice for Clean Power Alliance customers on Oct. 28, 2019, allowing residents to receive clean, renewable power at competitive rates and joining more than a third of CPA’s member cities and counties, including Culver City, Manhattan Beach, Ojai, Oxnard, Rolling Hills Estates, Santa Monica, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena, Thousand Oaks, Ventura, Ventura County and West Hollywood. “All communities should take action to be part of the global effort to combat climate change, and going to 100% clean, renewable energy is a step forward,” says Mayor Mikke Pierson. “Fighting climate change is especially important for Malibu, where nearly the entire City is right on the coast and highly vulnerable to sea level change, and is among the Santa Monica Mountains, where climate can make fire conditions like wind, heat, humidity and drought much more dangerous.” In December 2018, the City joined Clean Power Alliance, a public agency made up of 32 local governments across Los Angeles and Ventura counties working together to bring clean,
