Home + Design

Home. It’s such a small word, but one that carries such a profound meaning. It’s a word that grounds us, anchors us, and propels us forward. It’s where each day begins and ends; it’s our foundation and refuge. Its essence is universal, offering comfort, stability, and a true sense of belonging.
Home in the Little Apple is the golden glow of Flint Hills sunsets, the hum of Aggieville at night, and the warmth of a tight-knit community. It’s the roar of a Wildcat crowd, the charm of a small college town, and the heartbeat of big-hearted people. It’s where tradition meets adventure, and where every street just feels like home.
Home isn’t just a place — it’s also very much a feeling; a warmth found in the presence of the right person. It’s where you’re safe, understood, and loved. Being in someone’s arms is a home where your soul rests, where you truly belong, and where your heart feels at peace.
Home isn’t just a place or another person—it’s something you carry within yourself. It’s the peace you cultivate, the love you show yourself, and the acceptance of who you are. When you embrace your own strength and solitude, you realize that home has been within you all along.
We feel like the lucky ones as we get to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city, and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together.
As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you — in your city, neighborhood and most all of — your home.
Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.
Eckhart Tolle, one of my favorite authors, says: “Peace comes from being aligned with the present moment. Wherever you are, you feel that you are home—because you are home.”
Happy St. Paddy’s! Stay safe!

For years, we’ve searched for a line of fiberglass pools that would meet our high expectations for longevity and quality. Now, we’ve found that fiberglass pool partner in Aviva Pools, an industry leader known for innovation. They construct every layer of their pool shells with vinyl ester resin to resist micro-fracturing and shrinkage — compared to other manufacturers who only do one layer. And Aviva’s gelcoat sets the standard for UV blister and chemical resistance performance.

STORM SHELTERS FROM CAT CANS KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE, PROVIDING PROTECTION AND PEACE OF MIND WHEN SEVERE WEATHER STRIKES
The sky darken and sirens wail— another tornado warning in Kansas. With winds howling and debris flying, you rush your family to the tornado shelter outside your home, expertly
Made of fiberglass for enhanced safety, affordability, and longevity, The Refuge storm shelters can comfortably fit up to a dozen people during one of life’s scariest moments.
“BE PROACTIVE. DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE
IT!”
installed by Cat Cans Portable Services of Manhattan. The three point locking door shuts behind you, and inside, the shelter stands strong against the raging storm. Designed for maximum safety and security, it provides peace of mind as the tornado roars overhead. Your family huddles together, grateful for the investment in protection. When the storm passes, you emerge unscathed with your family safe. In tornado country, a high-quality shelter isn’t an option—it’s a necessity.
Crafted in Wedowee, Alabama by Fiberglass Creations, The Refuge storm shelters offer life-saving protection against powerful storms. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), underground storm shelters are the safest option during a tornado, providing superior protection from deadly winds, flying debris, and structural collapse in severe storms.
Meticulously designed to endure storms rated EF5, the shelters include secure locking mechanisms, ventilation for safety, and ergonomic interiors for comfort. They are compact yet spacious enough to accommodate families and emergency storm kits.
At Cat Cans, Kansas’ authorized dealer, offers three different sizes of The Refuge storm shelters. The largest model, Refuge 1, accommodates 10-12 people with an interior height of nearly seven feet. The Refuge 2, a mid-sized option, fits up to eight people with a slightly lower ceiling. For smaller groups, the Mini Refuge provides space for six people with an interior height just over six feet. All models come with a 10-year limited warranty for peace of mind.
The installation process begins with a thorough site assessment to determine the best location for the shelter, ensuring it’s easily accessible and provides maximum safety. Once
the site is chosen, the team excavates the area, digging a hole to accommodate the shelter’s specific dimensions.
After excavation, the shelter is carefully lowered into the hole using specialized equipment to make sure it remains level and securely positioned. Once in place, the shelter is anchored to the surrounding ground with a robust anchoring system to keep it firmly grounded. The first part of this system consists of two steel bars running beneath the shelter. Next, a one-ton cinder block is added to each side for added anchoring and stability. Then, to further enhance safety, two steel straps are placed across the top of the shelter, securing each cinder block in place.
The team ensures that the door seals tightly, protecting against debris and water infiltration. Additionally, ventilation systems are installed to maintain airflow and ensure safety during prolonged periods inside.
The final steps include backfilling the area around the shelter, restoring the landscape, and conducting a safety inspection. Cat Cans’ experts confirm that the storm shelter is fully operational, providing families with peace of mind during tornado season.
With a commitment to quality and community, Cat Cans provides a trusted line of defense against nature’s fiercest forces. Secure your home, protect your loved ones, and weather any storm with confidence.

Founded in 2004 by Marty Osborn, O&S Cleaning Solutions is a Manhattanbased company. While the company offers power washing, its primary focus is soft-washing, which is a specialized deep-cleaning technique for driveways, roofs, gutters, windows, and siding. Unlike traditional pressure washing, soft-washing utilizes a carefully formulated blend of eco-friendly cleaning solutions that effectively washes away bacteria at the source.
O&S also specializes in cleaning limestone buildings, like the Riley County Court House, with a powerful solution designed to remove mold and mildew while preserving the integrity of the stone. This process returns the stone to a pristine, bacteria-free state!
“O&S CLEANING SOLUTIONS IS COMMITTED TO QUALITY CARE, ENSURING SPOTLESS SPACES, RELIABILITY, AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION”
WHAT LED YOU TO START O&S CLEANING SOLUTIONS?
I want to say I started in 2003 or 2004 honestly. I was a musician and I wanted to do just window cleaning, thinking that would kind of support me in playing in bands. But when my daughter was born in 2011, that kind of changed everything. Then I’m like, this is not a little business I could just do by myself. It was something I needed to turn into an actual established business and make a career out of it.
SO WHAT DO YOU OFFER?
I like to say we offer roof to curb cleaning. We can come out if it’s a commercial property or residential property. We can wash the roof safely and effectively get the bacteria gone and extend the life of your roof and then your siding—everything.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SOFT WASH AND A POWER WASH?
Pressure washing bacteria doesn’t actually get rid of the bacteria; it just mows debris off the surface. Whereas soft washing, you’re coming in, you’re actually treating the area. You’re not going to damage the area and you’re killing the bacteria, so it’s not gonna come back.
WHY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SOFT WASHING AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
You know, a lot of times a homeowner will deal with a driveway that’s dirty and older. There are already chips and dings in that driveway. So, if you run a pressure washer over that, or even a surface cleaner, you run the risk of damaging that concrete more. Whereas soft washing has basically garden hose pressure. We apply our chemical and we let maybe two or three coats of the chemical dwell while we’re there, and it’s gonna kill or treat whatever is the issue. Not to mention it lasts four to six times longer than traditional pressure washing.
Marty Osborn is a proud native of the Little Apple and a graduate of Kansas State University. While he started off window cleaning as a side gig while playing in his band, the business eventually became his career. In 2020 O&S became the first and only Softwash Systems Authorized company in the state of Kansas. This focus aims at not only cleaning areas, but ensuring problems don’t return. Marty focuses on building strong client relationships and providing exceptional work. What matters most to Marty are his two daughters, Zorreya and Zephaniah. He involves them with his business as much as possible to teach them hard work and outstanding customer service. With a vision and a plan in place, he hopes that they will continue to carry on and build his legacy. From homes to businesses, O&S Cleaning Solutions is committed to quality care, ensuring spotless spaces, reliability, and customer satisfaction every time.
Yes. That bacteria is called Gloeocapsa magma, and that’s actually eating and eroding the limestone. It is the same bacteria that is found on asphalt aggregate and shingles, and it’s eating away at the limestone and shingle as well. We apply our treatment several coats on limestone and it kills off that bacteria and it’s not going to damage the stone, whereas if you go in with a pressure washer, you’re just attacking the stone. Given the limestone in Kansas is going to stay cleaner longer than the limestone in Florida with the humidity and all that, soft washing lasts four to six times longer than pressure washing with one-third of the water. I cleaned the limestone statue at the Sunset Zoo a long time ago, but it still looks brand new.
SoftWash Systems came from AC Lockyer in 2010 and it grew to a little over 220 companies using this business to help clean. He helps train us and makes it super easy to use. We use a proprietary blend of chemicals called Blend 6x. All of our chemicals are color-coded on the trucks so everyone, even people who can’t read English very well, knows what chemical they are using. If anyone ever has any questions on how much of a certain chemical to apply, they can look it up on the SoftWash Systems guide they give us so that there is no guesswork in what we do.
I’d like to add a branch in Lawrence. So that’s the next big move. But, if I add any other features, it would be adding the ability to start using drones in our cleaning. We actually have a soft wash system on their skid and they added this feature that they can use to help clean.

REFRESH AND ORGANIZE YOUR SPACE
ARTICLE BY HEATHER HOFFMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
It’s spring cleaning season! Whether the idea sparks joy or dread, most of us could clear out some clutter and refresh our space. After months of chilly weather and gray skies, spring can provide inspiration to breathe new life into your house.
As you begin organizing, start small with a drawer or cabinet. Sort items into keep, donate, and trash piles, and be realistic about what’s worth donating. Give yourself permission to get rid of mystery wires, clothes that haven’t fit since the first Trump administration, and anything expired or broken.
Once you’ve reduced unwanted items, use drawer organizers, baskets, and clear bins to keep similar items together. Store coats, winter accessories, and heavy blankets to make room for items you’ll use more frequently in warmer weather.
Next, move on to deep cleaning. Wash windows, scrub baseboards, and give your appliances—including your oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, and even your washer and dryer—a thorough cleaning.
Spring cleaning may require some elbow grease, but its reward—a tidy, refreshed space—will bring you a sense of ease every time you walk through the door.
In 2021, Amanda Purdom opened Furnish, a home décor boutique on Poyntz, a decade after co-founding her design firm AsterHouse Design. The store, anchored by a neutral color palette, exudes warmth and elegance with a touch of playfulness. Carrying a curated selection of furniture, lighting, rugs, home accents, and more, Furnish features designer, vintage, and custom items that cannot be found anywhere else.
After ten years of leading AsterHouse Design, Amanda realized that the company was only reaching a small percentage of the Manhattan community. She believed that there was a larger audience eager for well-curated home décor in Manhattan. “Not everybody wants to hire a designer, but people still want beautiful things in their homes,” she shares. Her goal was to create an inviting space where the community could shop for high-quality home décor. Whether they prefer traditional, modern, farmhouse, glam, or a medley of styles, each customer can find beautiful items that will transform their house into a home.
Though Furnish has only been open since 2019, its impact on Manhattan has been significant. In 2020, Amanda was able to purchase her current downtown location, which gave the store a permanent home. However, the timing coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, an unexpected challenge for the nascent business. Despite this, Furnish has continued to thrive, and Amanda wants the community to know what the store has to offer. “People often think they have to go to Kansas City or big furniture chains for quality, but we carry the same, if not better, lines, right here in town.” She also highlights that Furnish provides access to designer brands and vintage imports, items that can’t be found at big-box retailers like Nebraska Furniture Mart or Ashley HomeStore.
Amanda’s vision is to make shopping for home décor feel personal. Every piece is carefully curated, with Amanda often finding new items on her travels. The store

also specializes in one-of-a-kind items. She shares, “I don’t want my store to feel like something mass-produced. I want it to feel authentic and curated,” she says.
For those who fall in love with Furnish’s aesthetic and want personalized guidance, the store provides direct access to AsterHouse Design’s services. With in-home styling, clients can hire a stylist to visit their home to arrange accessories and complete their desired vision for a space. The in-store styling consultation enables clients to receive help in selecting furniture and décor items that fit their space and lifestyle. The process involves reviewing photographs and measurements of the space to make tailored recommendations. For more comprehensive design needs, AsterHouse Design provides full-service interior design, from the initial planning stages to the selection of furnishing and home accents. This includes reviewing blueprints or existing spaces, and offering detailed design plans. Their designers also coordinate with architects and contractors to make sure the design is implemented correctly.
Amanda recognizes that many people might find the idea of hiring a designer intimidating, and Furnish seeks to break down that barrier. “I wanted to remove that pretentious feeling that can come with design,” she says. “Design should be inspiring and approachable. Furnish is a space where people can see what they love, ask questions, and feel confident in creating a home that reflects their personality.”
When asked about her design approach, Amanda prioritizes timelessness over trends. While she acknowledges the appeal of fast-moving fads, she encourages customers to invest in classic pieces and use home accessories to incorporate trends. “For big purchases, like sofas, go for something neutral and high-quality. Then, have fun with things like artwork and textiles,” she advises. “That way, when trends shift, you don’t have to replace expensive pieces—you just refresh smaller elements.” She emphasizes that, with proper care, sofas typically last seven to ten years, while the lifespan of a rug is highly variable, depending on its material and a household’s lifestyle. For homeowners making major design

decisions during renovations, she suggests balancing timeless elements with trendy accents. “If you want to experiment with bold styles, do it with backsplashes, lighting, and décor—things that are easier to swap out over time.”
While Amanda is not one to follow trends, she is particularly excited about the return of vintage décor and “Grandma Chic.” This style blends chintz and floral patterns, layered textures, and antique elements. She also notes a growing interest in dark, moody color palettes, which is a shift away from the all-white minimalism that has dominated design for years.
Most importantly, for those unsure about their personal design style, Amanda offers simple advice: fill your home with things that you love. “So many people feel pressured to follow magazine trends, but a home should be a reflection of you, not a catalog page,” she says. “If a piece makes you happy, it belongs in your home. My biggest job as a designer is to give people permission to fill their home with things they love.”

Kitchen design has entered a transformative era, where innovation meets artistry to create spaces that are not only functional but also personal and sustainable. With advancements in technology, materials and craftsmanship, today’s kitchens are tailored to meet the evolving needs and tastes of homeowners.
According to interior designer Laura McCroskey, kitchens today are about more than just cooking—they’re an expression of personal lifestyle.
“Kitchen design has entered an exciting time where the possibilities feel limitless,” says McCroskey. “For me, the design process starts before lines are ever drawn on a construction document. I believe in creating spaces that enhance life, both functionally and aesthetically. The design process begins with a discussion about what a space needs to do, and what aesthetic will bring a spark to the homeowner.
design. Advanced appliances are at the forefront, enhancing convenience while aligning with a growing emphasis on eco-friendliness.
“From vacuum-sealing drawers that preserve food and reduce waste to smart appliances controlled by your phone, the emphasis is on efficiency and sustainability. Functional storage built seamlessly into marble countertops and oversized workstation sinks are making daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. Thoughtful features like composting compartments and advanced food preservation methods reflect a broader effort to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.”
Custom cabinetry that maximizes every inch of space minimizes waste while optimizing functionality.
“Forget the limits of traditional cabinetry. Blind corners, tiny nooks and hidden areas are now designed to maximize storage.

I also firmly believe that when designing a kitchen, one should walk out a recipe to make sure everything is in the right place to suit one’s lifestyle. Cooking zones are imperative to a well-designed kitchen.”
Modern kitchens emphasize zoning, or the creation of dedicated areas for preparation, cooking and storage, to enhance workflow and functionality. These zones not only improve efficiency but also contribute to a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic.
Cutting-edge rendering software, utilizing technology similar to that used in gaming, allows homeowners to visualize their dream kitchens in hyper-realistic detail. While these tools inspire creativity, McCroskey advises balancing ambitious ideas with practical implementation to achieve the best results.
Technology, sustainability and customization are driving the revolution in kitchen
Automated drawers and pop-up outlets are becoming increasingly common, marrying convenience with sleek aesthetics.”
Design trends have also evolved, becoming more flexible to reflect individual tastes.
“While white kitchens remain timeless and black adds drama, bleached woods continue to be popular. Style trends are no longer as rigid—whether you prefer modern, transitional, or traditional designs, you can create a kitchen tailored to your unique vision. There’s no limit to what you can achieve with today’s tools and technologies. The goal is to create spaces that resonate deeply with the people who live in them.”
The kitchen is the heart of every home and represents a space of endless possibility. Whether your aesthetic leans modern, farmhouse or somewhere in between, the tools and technologies available today make it easier than ever to bring your vision to life.
The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home!
By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room.
Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the home, house
plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus.
Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends. Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants.
ARTICLE BY SEAN O’KEEFE
Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot.
Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls. No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace.
Happy gardening!
