biggest reason was that it is my birthday month. Who wouldn’t be excited when your birthdays included backyard relay races and building ice cream sundaes by dropping the ingredients from the kitchen window, one story above grinning kids filled with joy and laughter? May is also the month we celebrate some of the most important women in our lives, our mothers. My mom was the mastermind behind those memorable childhood birthdays. Our mothers sacrifice so much and rarely receive the gratitude they deserve. So, I would like to thank you, Mom, for always being my rock and a constant source of support and love. With this issue, we shine a light on some truly amazing women who are making an impact in sports, classrooms and businesses, and inspiring lives throughout our community. GIVING BACK ARTICLE LAURA LEAVITT PHOTOGRAPHY REMEMBER WHEN PORTRAITS
Learning from Charitable Actions THE MISSION “TO SPREAD KINDNESS, SERVE THE COMMUNITY AND INSPIRE GIVING” FOR LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION GIVING GIRLS BEGAN WITH PRETTY NORMAL PRE-TEEN ACTIVITIES. Elise Tong, 11, and Maddie Evers, 10, were just neighbors and friends, hanging out together, watching videos. “We were at our house, watching videos of people who have done cool things; this evolved into finding fun things we can do to be kind, and then it became Giving Girls,” Elise says. “One Friday night, we sat in our front room until midnight, planning this idea, coming up with the name and picking out toys we could give away," Maddie says. "We then col-

lected money and went to the store to buy toys to donate to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.” A variety of opportunities to give back to their community over the past year and a half have allowed the girls, who are fifth-graders at Mason Intermediate, to constantly add new ideas. They think carefully about each organization they support. “We donated tied blankets that we made to Warm Welcomes, an organization that helps foster kids feel comfortable in their new homes,” Maddie says. The girls have done a diverse array of activities, including volunteering at Matthew 25: Ministries, taking meals to firefighters and collecting pet food for the SPCA. However, their

cornerstone project has become raising money and collecting donations for a toy drive each holiday season. They’ve added new methods to receive donations, which require them to practice some bravery in speaking to strangers. “This year, we set up a table where we could hand out information to people coming into Kroger,” Elise says. “Then the people could buy toys at Kroger and drop them off on the way out.” Their mothers, Courtney Tong and Melanie Evers, have encouraged their commitment to kindness and giving back. “I was inspired that they wanted to take their time to impact others and do something kind,” Courtney says. “I love how big their hearts are to help other people. They recognize that there are others who aren’t as blessed as they are,” Melanie adds. The girls have plans to continue their past programs, including the toy drive, as well as adding new projects over time, like filling backpacks with school supplies to donate to community members. Both the girls and their mothers emphasize that while it does take organization skills and learning to create a nonprofit business,

everyone has something to give, no matter what their age is. “We try to show people that they can make a difference by participating in a small way. They don’t have to do something huge; they can just help us out,” Elise says.

ARTICLE KATIE BRAY | PHOTOGRAPHY JANEL LEE PHOTOGRAPHY
Sonia Jackson Myles TITLE: Founder and CEO ORGANIZATION: The Sister Accord LLC, dba The Accord Group LLC
HOW DID THE SISTER ACCORD COME ABOUT? I was in corporate America for more than 20 years with amazing companies, but I noticed a pattern of men and women having different experiences in the workplace. My women mentees were coming to me and highlighting issues they were having with other women, and it gave me pause. So, I began looking for solutions, and that led me to start my Sister Accord business in 2013. WHAT DOES THE SISTER ACCORD DO? The foundation has three focus areas: educating girls and women, enlightening girls and women on the power of sisterhood, and eradicating bullying and violence against girls and women. My business focuses on getting the Sister Accord leadership development curriculum in school systems so we can address the issues that girls face. I’m also working with organizations regarding sisterhood and brotherhood in the workplace. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR CAREER? When I get a phone call or an email from a young lady that says, “Your program has transformed my life,” or “Your program has helped me overcome an anxiety disorder.” That’s the return on investment, to have people’s lives change in a sustainable way—that’s been the greatest gift for me. WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS? One of the biggest life lessons is understanding what your superpower is. Our superpowers are our gifts and our strengths—they were planted in us as we formed in our mother’s womb. So, once I help women understand and tap into those superpowers, they are on fire, and it’s difficult to extinguish! 16

“It’s important to show up in your own life. I live by the motto: small things done with great love.”
Lyn Hogrefe TITLE: Founder and Executive Director ORGANIZATIONS: Happy Hormone Cottage, Women’s Health Initiatives Foundation
WHAT KIND OF WORK DO YOU DO? I work with women to educate them about their options for natural hormone balance. I began the Cottage 10 years ago because there is a huge void between what our doctors know about hormone balance and the truth. We do hormone testing and can actually create plant-based powders and natural hormone therapy for each woman. WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS OR DEFINING MOMENTS OF YOUR CAREER? I was Teacher of the Year from 2004 to 2005 at Mt. Healthy City Schools where I taught sixth grade. In 2013, I was named a CincyChic Woman of the Year. I was chosen as a Woman of Excellence by the West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance and wrote a book called Own Your Journey about natural hormone balance in 2015. I co-wrote a book called Success Powered by Relationships in 2016. Then, in 2017, I was chosen as one of the 100 Top Trailblazers by Lean In Ohio. WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED IN YOUR CAREER? I’ve found it challenging to have my voice heard and validated. When I first began, I would educate women and get them feeling empowered and then they would go to their doctor for a prescription and [the doctor] would say “You can’t do bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. That’s witchcraft,” because they’d never heard of it. Over the last 10 years, women have come to us and have gotten better, so now these doctors are sending women to me for help. Also, women now feel more empowered in owning their own health options.

LOCAL WOMEN
(CON TI N U ED)
Sammie Puisis TITLE: Mason High School Student, Mason Comets Girls Basketball Forward RECOGNITIONS: McDonald’s All-American Basketball Player, Mason High School Senior Star Forward, Two-Time Greater Miami Conference Player of the Year
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO BE NAMED A MCDONALD’S ALL-AMERICAN? It was kind of a surprise at first because there’s so much talent out there. That doesn’t come easy, that accomplishment. To be chosen as one out of 24 basketball players in the nation was just an amazing feeling. I started tearing up when I saw the news and how proud all of my family and coaches were. WHAT HAS MADE YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SPORT? I’m passionate about it because I love it. I’m competitive. There’s just something about playing as a team and getting after it, winning and making your family proud. I drive off of that. That’s why I play basketball. HOW HAVE OTHERS SUPPORTED YOU IN YOUR JOURNEY THUS FAR? My parents sacrifice a lot: their time and their energy. They drive me places and take me to all my games. And my peers come and support me. Coaches have taught me a lot. My teammates have made me better. They’re always pushing me, and without everyone around me, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today. HOW HAS BASKETBALL SHAPED YOU? I think it has shaped who I am as a person, but it’s definitely not the most important thing in my life, and it doesn’t define who I am. I believe that I’m so much more than just a basketball player.

“To be chosen as one out of 24 basketball players in the nation was just an amazing feeling. I started tearing up when I saw the news and how proud all of my family and coaches were.”
Lina Patel TITLE: Senior Program Manager ORGANIZATIONS: Accenture, Mason City Schools, Mason Schools Foundation, Junior Achievement
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON? I am a senior manager at Accenture and have been with them for 20 years. This school year, they allowed me to take a leave to give back to the community. I’m honored to be part of the journey with Jonathan Cooper's Mason City Schools team driving the district's Three Big Rock agendas: inclusive excellence, culture changes and personalized learning. WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF BEING A WORKING MOM? In our society women get judged for not being home with the kids and for leaving work early to be with the kids. I’m a second-generation immigrant from India and the first person in my family to graduate from college. There’s pressure to not only be the mom that society expects but also to have a business or career. I have to consciously take a pause to overcome judgment from friends, family, co-workers and social media.
Michele Abrams TITLES: Chairperson, Leadership Consultant, Talk Show Host ORGANIZATIONS: Southwest Ohio Leadership Think Regional!, MBAbrams, Feelin’ Good! Warren County Community Services TV Program
WHAT IS YOUR CAREER FOCUS? I work with Think Regional which includes 15 counties collaborating and creating relationships with leaders throughout Southwest Ohio to drive economic growth and community development. In my past career life, I was a community director for local leadership programs. I helped get the West Chester Leadership 21 and Leadership Hamilton programs started from the ground up. I was also the director of the Leadership Middletown program for 10 years. WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST ROLE MODEL? My mother was a very important role model for me because she went to college and worked in a big city at a time when many women did not go to college. I admire everything that she achieved when it was even more challenging to be a woman. May 2019 | Mason & Deerfield Lifestyle

In a four-month, million-dollar renovation, Basil’s On Market has transformed the grand 15,000-square-foot space on the busy corner of Tylersville and Reading roads in Mason. With its fresh vibe and from-scratch kitchen, it brings fare fit for foodies to the suburbs— all at affordable prices. "On this corner, at the entry point to downtown Mason, we are a landmark. We want this to be the neighborhood hangout," says Jeff Finkelstein, restaurateur at Basil’s On Market. Stop in to see the slick and modern design, but stay for the food. From bistro sandwiches to first-class entrees, the ever-adapting menu makes it tough to choose. And the extensive wine list wows. Open seven days a week, Basil’s On Market serves sustainable and local foods, including vegetarian and gluten-free options—perfect for a weekday lunch, date night or dinner with the whole family. “We are casual dining that gives you great food and drinks at a great value,” Jeff says. “We are a come-as-you-are, eat-what-you-want type of setting, and we want to see you here with your family and friends.”

My wife and I are in the process of selecting a new front door for our home. The house faces the west and our front door takes a beating from the myriad of weather challenges that come our way each year. The door company has a website where you can load a photo of the front of your own house. You can plug all sorts of options into that photo and get some idea as to exactly what door, what color, and what window design looks just right for your home. This will be the third front door we’ve had in the 27 years we’ve lived at this house. But a front door is important. Your front door is what sets the tone for how you welcome guests and address your neighbors. As individuals a smile is our front door to the world. Here at the dental office we encounter people on a regular basis who are no longer able to smile freely or laugh loudly without a subtle but genuine inner haunt. Both physical and emotional pain is often rooted in some facet of dental disease or disrepair. People think twice about attending a class reunion because of their teeth. They shy away from job interviews because of their teeth. People give up on sharing themselves with intimate friends and family because of their

teeth. Life is too short to put up with weathered doors and hidden smiles. There are followable paths for you to address both of these issues. Why not make it a priority today?

THE NEWEST ELEMENTAL OM YOGA STUDIO ON CHURCH STREET NEAR DOWNTOWN MASON IS FILLED WITH LIGHT AND COLOR. From the local art on the walls to tinted glass letting sunlight stream into the oldest church in Warren County, it’s the type of space that feels like the perfect place to find some peace. In simple terms, yoga is an ancient discipline from India that uses breathing, exercise and meditation to improve overall health. At Elemental Om, they are seeing a lot of men and women over the age of 55 coming to yoga for the first time, and 1 in 3 new students is sent by a doctor. For some, it’s a physical form of therapy, but it can also have a big impact on mental health. “A workout is separate,” says Elemental Om founder Pamela Quinn. “Yoga can heal the body and help you learn how to relax and de-stress.” If you’re unsure about your ability to do yoga for any reason, whether it be health or injury, Pamela encourages everyone to just try it. “If we can get you in and using props appropriately, you can do yoga,” she says. Pamela and Elemental Om instructor Annie Eschmeyer shared a few of their favorite poses that anyone can do, including how to use props like blankets and blocks to help lessen the strain on problem areas of the body.

Supported Low Lunge opens the hips and can alleviate lower back pain. Start by placing the right foot between your hands (on blocks) with your knee directly above your ankle. Drop your left knee to a blanket and flatten your left foot. Practice your balance by placing your hands at heart center, then repeat on the other side. Using a blanket relieves pressure on the knee, and the blocks help you comfortably stay in alignment.
1
Easy Pose is the ultimate pose for meditation. “All postures lead to this,” Pamela says. “It’s where you get to close your eyes and relax.” Start by sitting on the edge of a firm bolster or blanket with your legs extended. Sit up straight and cross your legs in front of you, letting your hands rest on your knees, or rest your wrists on your knees and bring your index finger and thumb together. Using a blanket or bolster allows you to get into position without pinching the lower back.
3
Modified Tree Pose offers a supported balance, so you can build on it once you’re more comfortable. With your hands at heart center, ground down through your left leg and foot to stabilize. Externally rotate your right leg, bend the knee and rest the ball of your foot on the floor and the heel on your inner shin. Challenge your balance by raising your arms overhead. Repeat on the other side. May 2019 | Mason & Deerfield Lifestyle
