A Holiday Full of Traditions
There is a limitation to writing for a magazine (as opposed to newspaper or social media, for example), it’s the lead time required. As I write this, it’s still mid-October. Halloween is a few days away and Thanksgiving soon to follow. But pulling this issue together with all the festivities scheduled, Christmas holiday cheer abounds. I feel like the retailer who has Christmas trees propped up next to the inflatable Halloween spider display. The upside is I no longer procrastinate in my Christmas gift shopping.
I can tell you on good authority there is no shortage of holiday fun and entertainment again this year. Holiday plays and concerts, Santa parade, light festivals, house decorating contest, winter solstice parties, hot chocolate, kettle corn and candy canes...Media has it all.
Inside this issue we celebrate a Philadelphia tradition 50 years in the making... the Ronald McDonald House. The first house was built right here in Philadelphia in 1974 and was the keystone for over 390 Ronald McDonald Houses in 64 countries. You would be hard pressed not to have volunteered, visited, or even known someone who benefitted from this charity.
Another long running tradition, the Media Santa Parade, is now celebrating its 10th year. The magic of a Christmas Parade can’t be beat. We dive into the story of how it all began and how it benefits local charities while putting the miles of smiles on the faces lining the parade route.
You can’t think about the holidays without the challenges of gift giving. To hopefully ease the stress, we’ve taken the liberty of shopping for you. Guys, Gals, and Kids...we rounded up 9 local retailers to fit the bill for great gifts available right here in Media.
Alison Jaeger, gardener extraordinaire, shares her love of design with a how-to in creating your own piece of holiday spirit through wreaths. She also designed and photographed our cover.
We also connected with Rabbi Tzvi Altein of DELCO's Chabad Center to learn more about another tradition, Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. A festival that carries a powerful and universal message for all.
In Fessiwig tradition we also included a cocktail feature from the newly opened Departure restaurant in Media, as well as showcase the Bûche de Noël holiday dessert from Pastry Pants Bakery in neighboring Swarthmore.
To all our loyal readers…The Warmest of Holidays Wishes!

50 Years of MIRACLES FOR FAMILIES
A DOCTOR, THE EAGLES GENERAL MANAGER, AND MCDONALD’S WORKED TOGETHER TO CREATE THE FIRST HOME FOR FAMILIES WHOSE CHILDREN NEED SURGERY

Jim Murray
Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House
In the fall of 2024, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia Region celebrated its 50th anniversary. As the very first Ronald McDonald House, founded in Philadelphia in 1974, it has become a symbol of hope for millions of families with children receiving critical medical care across the world. It’s story of compassion, community, and what Jim Murray – co-founder of the first Ronald McDonald House, our Main Line neighbor and former Philadelphia Eagles General Manager - fondly calls a “McMiracle.”
The Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia owes its inception to a compelling collaboration between Jim Murray, Dr. Audrey Evans, the Philadelphia Eagles, and McDonald’s.
Murray’s journey began when he became involved to support Kim Hill, the daughter of Eagles player Fred Hill. Kim had been diagnosed with leukemia. A fundraiser was held which became the precursor to the charity Eagles Fly for Leukemia.
Murray knew something more had to be done. A conversation with Dr. Audrey Evans set the wheels in motion.
Dr. Audrey Evans, a pioneering oncologist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia,
recognized a desperate need for families traveling to the hospital for their children’s cancer treatment to have a place to stay. At the time, families were often forced to sleep in waiting rooms, cars, or even hallways, unsure where they could find rest while their children received life-saving treatments.
“We were raising money to take care of people who had needs, and they had more than needs—they needed a place to stay,” Murray recalls. In the momentous conversation, he said to Dr. Evans, “Doc, you’re in Philly! We’re all about the neighborhood. What you need is a house!” and she replied, “Then get us a house!” The concept of the Ronald McDonald House was born. It was a simple idea, but it changed the world. “I didn’t start it; God did,” Murray reflected.
Murray was tasked with making the money happen. With the generosity of Leonard Tose, the then-owner of the Eagles, Murray was given great support and funding opportunities. Tose supported Murray’s unique idea of passing a football helmet around Veterans Stadium to collect donations. Jim laughs, “People said, ‘They’ll take the money out,’ but I told them, ‘You don’t know Philly.’ Nobody took a dime; they just kept putting money in.
The funding was designed for the Eagles Fly for Leukemia, which was crucial to the team developing the House. Much gratitude to Stan Lane, the co-founder of the Eagles Fly for Leukemia.
The next step was the partnership with McDonald’s through a connection with Don Tuckerman of the Elkman Advertising Group and the great relationship the Eagles had with McDonald’s. Murray had been involved with the fundraising initiative for the Eagles Fly for Leukemia through the sale of Shamrock Shakes. One of Don’s accounts was the McDonald’s Corporation.
Murray first pitched, “If I get quarterback Roman Gabriel to do a commercial for Shamrock Shakes, could you give me a quarter for each shake?” With the agreement of the local McDonald’s operators, the response was, “If you call the house the ‘Ronald McDonald House,’ you can have all the profits.” Murray said, “it all evolved into a McMiracle.” The impact was immediate and far-reaching.
The first House opened its doors in West Philadelphia and welcomed families from around the world. “The best part was we put them all together, not only in the House but gave them a chance to eat
Dr. Audrey Evans, Jim Murray
meals together, tell stories, and be a family,” Murray explained. It wasn’t just about providing shelter; it was about creating a community of hope.
Today, there are 390 Ronald McDonald Houses in more than 62 countries, each one offering a space for families to rest and recharge while their children undergo medical treatment. The House in Philadelphia, however, will always be special. As Jim Murray’s son, Jimmy Joe Murray, spoke at the 50th Anniversary Reception on September 25, 2024, “It’s a great Philadelphia story that started here and we’re the birthplace of a charity that now helps literally millions of people all over the world.”
The 50th anniversary of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Philadelphia is not simply a celebration of a building or even a charity—it’s a reflection of
the power of community, compassion, and a shared belief that when we come together, miracles happen.
Susan Campbell, CEO of RMHC Philadelphia, reflected on the organization, “Jimmy has a huge heart and always mentions the importance of neighbors helping neighbors. Every day, we are inspired by him, as we continue to build on his legacy... When I see a child smiling or playing at the Ronald McDonald House after a long day at the hospital, I am reminded that we are bringing a bit of normalcy to that child’s family. Every day, I am thankful and motivated to provide comfort to families during the most challenging times of their lives.”
Murray continues to be humbled by the impact of the House. “When somebody has a sick kid, they want to help,” he said. “And this was the perfect way.”
As we look back on 50 years of the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia, it’s clear that this charity was built on the foundation of generosity and love. What started as a simple idea has grown into a global network of hope, supporting millions of families when they need it most.
For Jim Murray, the real miracle is in the families who have found strength within the walls of the House. “I see miracles every day,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. And that’s what the Ronald McDonald House will continue to be for generations to come—a house of miracles.

Santa’s Parade, Fun Run & Block Party

“
Revel in the live music, hot chocolate and tasty treats, video games, crafts, face painting, balloon twisters, and more!
‘Twas a lovely night out in Everybody’s Hometown about a decade ago when Monika Rehoric, an esteemed business leader here in Media, came up with the idea to bring a new spectacular event to the Borough - the Media Santa Parade, Fun Run & Walk, and Costume Contest!
Monika recruited three of her friends and colleagues who she knew were deeply rooted in the Media community to make it a reality, including Dave Sibley, Megan Hill, and me, the author!
This small but mighty team, later coined “The Core Four,” began logistics planning, hiring the entertainment, securing local community groups, and recruiting volunteers. The committee of four worked diligently to bring in other individuals who could help make this inaugural event a phenomenal success. The main goal was to offer the community something fresh and festive to kick off the holiday season.
Delightfully so, the plan worked!
In 2014, more than 500 runners and walkers, sporting their finest holiday costumes, participated in the family-friendly scamper through town, and approximately 4,500 excited spectators lined the parade route. The lineup featured more than 30 entertaining music and variety acts, including five award winning string bands, sparkling floats decked out for the holidays, dancers, bagpipers, live reindeer, and of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus!
Naturally, the committee was blown away by the tremendous response from not just the neighbors in Media, but surrounding communities as well. The Facebook comments came flooding in, and potential acts started reaching out in hopes of joining the party. Round two was on!
From 2015 through 2018, the event became bigger and brighter as the years went on, incorporating more sparkle, more entertainment, and
more activities for everyone to enjoy, including the Block Party on Veterans Sq. and State St. Over the years, the kiddos, and kids at heart too, have been reveling in the live music, hot chocolate and tasty treats, video games, crafts, face painting, balloon twisters, and much more!
As with any large event comes unforeseen circumstances, but that ol’ Grinch could never rain on this parade! Facing pandemic restrictions and inclement weather, the small but mighty team quickly pivoted for a few years to continue providing the community with the holiday splendor they grew to love and anticipate. During COVID, the foursome organized drive-by events, as floats, bands, community groups, and of course, Santa on his sleigh, wove their way through the Borough bringing miles of smiles to Media. When wintry weather struck, the Block Party moved into the Community Center much to the delight of everyone who attended. The house was absolutely packed!
Another very important component is the group’s commitment to non-profit organizations, namely, the Media Food Bank, Toys for Tots, and CityTeam Chester. In lieu of an entry fee, Fun Run & Walk attendees are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items as well as holiday gifts for individuals and families facing challenging times. Through the committee’s continued efforts, healthy food and fantastic presents have been distributed to thousands of folks in need.
And now, as December 1st nears, Monika and her crew are crossing their fingers Mother Nature delivers a beautiful day so that once again, Media can experience all the razzle dazzle of the holiday season kickoff along State Street! All are welcome! (Rain date December 8th) santaparade.media

CELEBRATE THE SEASON WITH THIS EASY PROJECT THAT BRINGS BEAUTY AND JOY TO YOUR HOME
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISON JAEGER
Holiday Wreath How To
Wreaths are a simple and easy way to dress up your doorstep, Fresh Look Design’s owner and Media resident walks you through the steps of styling a wreath that is as unique as you!
Styling an evergreen wreath can be a fun and creative way to celebrate the seasons and your home. Here are some ideas to help you create a beautiful evergreen wreath:
Prep:
Gather all the below materials before beginning
• 1 wreath
• 9-15 dried orange slices 9 full sticks of cinnamon
• 5-9 pine cones of various sizes Optional: ribbon
• 1 glue gun
• 2-3 glue sticks
• 1 5” clear zip tie
Step One: Select A Wreath
Select a wreath (either artificial or fresh)
A wreath that's 24–30 inches in diameter is ideal for a standard 36-inch wide door.
Start with a rich and densely packed evergreen wreath as your foundation. When choosing fresh, make sure the needles are supple and bendable. A wreath that is already dried out won't last through the season.
Step Two: Decorate With Seasonal Accents
Carefully apply hot glue to the back of your chosen decorative elements and press them firmly onto the wreath, layering them in different heights and directions until you achieve your desired look. Some ideas:to consider:
• Natural theme: add pinecones, berries, or dried orange slices for a rustic touch.
• Holiday theme: Add small ornaments in complementary colors for a holiday feel or a large bow.
• Light it up: Weave in a string of battery- operated LED lights for a magical glow.
Step Three: Hang And Enjoy!
For a traditional look, hang the wreath in the center of the door, about 14 inches from the top. Use floral wire or clear zip ties to ensure they stay put.

Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights
Join us in Media on State Street on December 10th from 3-5pm
The menorah, a symbol of light and hope, is central to the Hannukah celebration. Rabbi Tzvi Altein of DELCO’s Chabad Center says, “You light the candle when it’s dark outside, symbolizing that each of us can illuminate the way for others, and serve as a moral guide.” The menorah’s increasing lighting over the eight days represents continuous growth and the idea that there is always more we can do to bring light into the world.
The eight-day festival originated because it took eight days to secure new oil for the Temple. When the Macabees could only find enough pure oil to last one day, the menorah miraculously stayed lit for eight days.

Dec 10th on State Street
The Jewish Festival of Lights carries a powerful and universal message for all. Rabbi says , “It’s a story of standing up against persecution and overwhelming odds, for what you believe is right, and finding success.” It is a lesson in courage and integrity.
The annual Hanukkah Village in Media brings excitement and unity. There’ll be cookie decorating, face art, Hanukkah story trail and more. “The Village makes Hanukkah something people look forward to,” Rabbi Altein says. “We welcome people of all faiths to celebrate together. We’ve been successful in creating a warm, inviting atmosphere, and we encourage all to join us,” he emphasizes. The Village embodies the universal message of Hanukkah—standing up for what’s right and sharing light and warmth with others.
GREAT GIFTS TO PERUSE WHILE SUPPORTING YOUR COMMUNITY WITH EVERY PURCHASE
Media is home to many wonderful locally owned shoppes. Shopping locally during the holiday season is not only convenient, but also a way to give back to the community. When you shop at small businesses, you’re supporting your neighbors and helping to keep our town vibrant and thriving.
Local shop owners are passionate about what they do and offer a level of care and expertise that you would not find at big-box retailers. Plus, by reducing the need for long-distance shipping, you are choosing an eco-friendly option this holiday season. So, as you search for the perfect gift, take a stroll down the familiar streets of Media, and enjoy discovering treasures while supporting local businesses. We visited some of those businesses and asked the owners to show us one item they would like to display in our holiday gift guide. We looked for a variety for men (in the top row,) for women (in the center row,) and children (in the bottom row.)
Whether you’re hunting for a perfect piece of jewelry, artisanal objects, or handmade toys, our local shops have it all. This year, give gifts that make a difference—both to your loved ones and to the heart of Media.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
From Pastry Pants, Voted Best Bakery in Delaware County in 2024

Photograpy: Robert Smythe
Robert Smythe, owner of Pastry Pants Bakery, has made the Bûche de Noël a holiday tradition both at his bakery and in his own home. The cake, often called a Yule Log, is a rolled sponge cake frosted to resemble tree bark. But for Smythe, it’s much more than just a dessert.
“My daughter was born on Christmas Eve, and ever since she was little, we’ve celebrated her birthday with a Bûche de Noël,” Smythe shares.
“We had a family rule not to put up Christmas decorations until after her birthday to keep the two celebrations separate. Now, she helps me make the cake every year, and it’s become a wonderful time in the kitchen together.”
At home, the Yule Log can be made using Genoise sponge, which is egg-based and folded with flour.
“I like chestnut flour for a unique twist,” Robert explains. Once the cake is baked, it’s filled with whipped cream, chocolate chips, and almonds, then rolled and frosted. Decorations can be as simple as powdered sugar for snow. Smythe adds meringue mushrooms and marzipan ivy leaves to evoke the magic of Christmastime.
At Pastry Pants, Smythe offers the Bûche de Noël by pre-order for Christmas. Smythe promises, “It’s meant to be enjoyed, and we make sure it’s as delicious as it looks.”
