THE LIFECYCLE OF HEALTH WELLNESS CONSIDERATION BEFORE MEDICATION TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT

HOME + DESIGN

ORGANIZATION FEELS BETTER JANUARY 2025

Discover true wellness.

We Can Do It

Whatever "it" is. There are so many choices to keep healthy in this, our Health and Wellness issue. We want you to know that health does not have to be difficult but it does need attention. The focus should be eating right and involving SOME kind of movement (and there are so many choices here in our neighborhood).

I'm 65 and I still dance, lift heavy things (with care) and walk. I also do HOTWORX, next door to ACME. The infrared heat makes my bones feel better. But just walking a little more helps - like parking farther away from the front door of ACME or take a stroll around Media. And I've found the gyms around here are actually fun.

If you haven't stopped at Gfit, do so - supportive and fun. Lots of choices in Media - even our Borough has classes. And hidden away are gyms on the lower level in Springfield Square. All great folks.

I am surprised to see how many nutritionists and one-on-one helpful fitness experts are right here in our town. We zoom in on one who is particularly attuned to what YOU would like and need that can actually prevent the need for medication, a great group offering physical therapy and 2 pages of gym choices I've found. (I need a bigger magazine - LOL.)

It sometimes feels difficult to put your own needs first but you are important and just spend some time, please, on how you can improve your health even if it's a little bit every week.

Much Support,

January 2025

The world has changed tremendously since Joseph Pratt farmed his land in Gradyville in the 1700s. Yet centuries later, his farm still thrives, having evolved from a working family farm to a living history museum and an educational resource for Pennsylvania’s students and teachers.

THE LIFECYCLE of Health

Creating Healthy Communities by Enhancing Physical Health

ARTICLE BY KRISTEN WILSON, PT, DPT AND KATHERINE DIXON, PT, DPT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ED RYDER
The Staff at Action Potential

With the turn of the New Year, we begin the year-long focus on “being healthy.” A renewed commitment to exercising, eating right, and practicing self-care boosts gym memberships, enhances cookbook sales, and increases downloads of meditation apps. But wouldn’t it be refreshing if this year’s resurgence of health wasn’t so inward-facing, and instead fostered a cycle of health that extended beyond one person and into surrounding neighborhoods?

Action Potential’s mission is creating healthy communities. As a one-on-one physical therapy practice, they believe health transcends beyond the individual. Not only do they enhance the physical health of clients by alleviating pain, relieving chronic conditions, and increasing balance and safety, but the therapists give back to the community to ensure that those in their surrounding neighborhoods have access to the information they need for a healthy lifestyle. The result? Healthier people contributing to stronger communities, thus creating the lifecycle of health.

THE FUTURE OF TOMORROW

Mothers put everyone’s needs above their own, oftentimes sidelining their health due to lack of time, cost, or fatigue. But how can our communities thrive when those ushering in the next generation are left without the support they need?

It is important that specific programs are designed to help those transitioning through this period of life. Pelvic health therapists assist with prenatal planning through Birth Prep sessions which prepare the expectant mother for labor and delivery. Once post-partum, mothers receive care to ease recovery from childbirth when pelvic pain, incontinence, and back pain are common.

To reach a broader audience, the therapists of Action Potential created lighthearted gatherings called “Vagina Parties” for women to assemble and discuss the taboo topic of pelvic health. Partnering with community groups like Media Moms allows the message to reach more women. “Our Vagina Parties have been instrumental in normalizing the changes women experience with childbirth,” shares Dana van der Kieft, clinic manager of the Media location.

CARING FOR THE PAST

While protecting the future is critical, preserving the safety of those of the past is equally important. Today’s seniors are more independent and active than years prior and have varied needs.

It’s important to create a dynamic treatment approach that addresses the physical challenges of the older adult. Whether recovering from a pickleball injury, rehabbing a joint replacement, or looking to build strength for an upcoming trip, fitness and health goals enhance the total quality of life when provided by a skilled therapist.

To help educate on arthritis, balance problems, and osteoporosis, Action Potential presents regularly to community groups of seniors, most recently at Haverford Township Community Recreation and Environmental Center (CREC). “Supporting our community of seniors has been important to us since our first year in 2011,” shares co-owner and geriatric certified specialist Kristen Wilson.

THE CYCLE CONTINUES

Giving back to the community is paramount, but the real magic happens in the results. Action Potential co-owner Kathy Dixon has seen this firsthand, “Our clients make a difference in the world. They have gathered hundreds of coats for those in need, provided school supplies for shelters, and donated hundreds of dollars to local charities. We help them, and they help others!”

This year, consider how enhancing your health can contribute to the greater good of your community.

Whether Glen Mills, Kennett Square or Media is most convenient, if you or someone you love needs help with a physical condition, we’re here for you.

All Action Potentials sessions are one-on-one. Their therapists treat a variety of ages and conditions, including injury and surgery rehabilitation, neck and back pain, prenatal/postpartum care, concussion and vertigo, other neurological conditions, and more. As leading experts in musculoskeletal conditions, their therapists have the skill and time to help you reach your optimal potential.

A Solution Before Medication: Prevention Wellness

A Proven Program Which Can Prevent AND Lower the Need for Medication

Dr. Kathryn Hall, a Lifestyle Medicine physician and the owner of FellFoot Lifestyle Medicine, has patients, friends, and family with health concerns such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. They ask, “So there’s really nothing I can do?”

Dr. Hall responds, “You may have the genetic predisposition for some of these conditions, but there’s a tremendous amount that you can do. Eighty percent of chronic diseases are preventable with lifestyle modification.”

Currently, Dr. Hall has a 90-year-old patient with type 2 diabetes who has improved her condition to the point that she could stop taking insulin. After 10 years of insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes, this patient’s hemoglobin A1C is now on target.

Dr. Hall supports doctors in helping patients reach their goals, “Primary care physicians only have a few minutes to spend with each patient. No time to dive into every aspect of a patient’s health.”

Dr. Hall considers herself an accountability partner for her patients. “If someone says, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go start a yoga program’, I want to hear about it. I want you on Friday to text me that you went,” says Dr. Hall.

The goal is to help patients get their health back on track before medication is needed. “In Lifestyle Medicine, we believe that there is a lot more that you can do before you need to start taking medication,” explains Dr Hall.

“It seems more often than not, I am facilitating de-prescribing…I’ve had people come off blood pressure medication, off CPAP, and more,” says Dr. Hall.

“With a few small changes, you can improve your health. But with an intensive lifestyle intervention and an overhaul of your habits, you can sometimes reverse chronic disease,” explains Dr. Hall.

A mother with two young children may find it difficult to transform her health habits overnight. However, someone who has more time in their schedule or had a recent health scare, such as a heart attack, might be ready to make big changes to their lifestyle.

“Some people need small steps over months. Some people need a life overhaul,” says Dr. Hall. “Together, we sort out what intervention

Dr. Hall suggest an oatmeal breakfast with fresh ingredients

is needed that fits into your life at the time of your life.”

In helping people to maximize their healthspan, Dr. Hall prefers very specific goals around nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management with her patients. Other expertise includes the menopause transition and pre-surgery health optimization. These factors are tracked and recorded over a period of time. Dr. Hall does this in both one-on-one and group coaching settings.

With regard to losing weight, patients’ resolve wither away as the months go by without seeing visible change. It’s important to remember that there is much more to losing weight than exercise and nutrition. According to Dr. Hall, “Stress management and a consistent sleep schedule also play a key role in weight loss and overall health.”

Dr. Hall appreciates the community that surrounds her, “Media is the right place and it is, in my mind, a future blue zone. I think that this community, which is so interconnected, has a focus on sidewalks, bikes, sustainability, healthy food, the farmers market - everything is so interconnected that this is the right place to do this work. I think people will believe in this approach. The future of medicine is prevention.”

Dr. Kathryn Hall’s goal is to get people healthy to increase their healthspan so that it matches their lifespan. She focuses on the Six Pillars of Health: Nutrition, Movement, Sleep, Avoidance of Substances, Social Connection, and Stress Management. She’s offering “2025 New Year. New You. Kickstart Program!” A six-week all-virtual group coaching program beginning 12/30/2024.

RECOGNIZING THE BENEFITS OF COMBINING CONVENTIONAL AND COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES

Integrative, Complementary and Alternative Medicine are all methods that supplement traditional medicine. They are not considered a replacement - they work alongside traditional treatments.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years - balancing the body and helping it heal. From a scientific perspective, acupuncture is believed to work by stimulating the nervous system, improving blood flow and triggering the release of certain chemicals like serotonin and endorphins, which can help reduce pain and stress while promoting healing.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting very thin needles into specific points on the body (the needle points do not cause pain). It balances the body’s energy (qi) which promotes the body’s ability to heal itself and maintain overall health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as a suitable treatment for many disorders including musculoskeletal pain, arthritis, headaches, migraines, nausea, anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, hormone imbalances, fertility, as well as skin issues.

Organization Reduces Anxiety, Increases Productivity, Helps Save Time, Promotes Wellbeing, and Boosts Emotional Health

ARTICLE BY DARLA DEMORROW PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOTTIE FOLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

Getting and staying organized can give you some control in a cluttered, overbooked world. Creating pockets of visual calm in your home and office can help minimize stress in a busy day.

According to HeartWork Organizing’s owner, Darla DeMorrow, there are only three problems with getting organized. The first problem is getting started. The second is making progress. The third problem is feeling finished. Having a simplified approach to every organizing project can lead to getting organized faster and staying organized longer.

S.O.R.T. and Succeed is DeMorrow’s five-step process to make organizing fun and automatic. Unlike other approaches, it helps even reluctant declutterers get started with a very clear first and last step.

FIVE EASY STEPS TO S.O.R.T. AND SUCCEED

S - Start with a written plan of 5 words or less.

O - Organize into groups of similar items.

R - Reduce, release, and reset your things.

T - Tweak your space to make it even more attractive and functional.

Succeed and celebrate every time. Reward yourself for even a few minutes of putting things in place. Even a little bit of progress is still progress. Reward a small task with small perks like a second cup of coffee after clearing the desktop. For bigger organizing projects, choose bigger benefits, like a weekend getaway after organizing the basement. Rewards reinforce good organizing habits.

Creating an organized home doesn’t come naturally for everyone. For people with ADHD or with very little time at home, carving out a few hours for organizing feels impossible. Hiring a professional organizer can shorten the road between chaos and calm.

HeartWork Organizing professional organizers joyfully organize homes, digital lives, and family photos. The S.O.R.T. and Succeed book is online and at area libraries.

Feed Your Health

2 Servings

Ingredients:

• 2 cups water or unflavored coconut water

• 1 cup packed spinach leaves (or half cup each spinach and baby kale leaves)

• 1 small (or half) cucumber peeled and seeded

• 1 half garlic clove smashed

• 1/2 green apple, cored

• 1 small ripe avocado, without pit or skin

• 1/2 or 1 lemon peeled and chopped

• Optional: handful of mint leaves (highly suggested)

• Optional: 1 small fresh or frozen banana (Editor’s suggestion)

• Note: You can use 1 cup ice and 1 cup water instead to make it colder. The frozen banana works, too.

Directions: Blend spinach, cucumber, lemon, ginger, apple, water, mint, and banana in a blender. Add avocado at the end.

This is so good for your whole body, organs, blood, and over all health. If you really want to go up another notch, add 1 tbsp MCT oil after blending and stir it in. “MCT oil is popular for potential benefits such as aiding in fat absorption issues, weight management, boosting energy for exercise, and easing inflammation.” – webmd.com

If possible, use organic. MOM’s Organic Market in Rosemont/Bryn Mawr, Media Farmers’ Market Organic, and Whole Foods in Newtown Square.

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue

smart SWEETS

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.

Combine:

• 1 cup wheat flour

• 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled

• 2 cups oats

• 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 tablespoons chia seeds

• 2/3 cup raisins

• Optional: chocolate chips as desired

• Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa.

Add this mixture slowly to combine:

• 2 eggs

• 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter

• 1/2 cup honey

• 1 banana

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.
