Lifestyle Letter All you need is love
W
eddings are a personal reflection of the couple who plan them. Whether it's an elegant affair at an exclusive country club or a rustic party in a country barn, you and your guests are there to celebrate your love. And although every bridal couple positively shines on their wedding day, there are hundreds of duties and details they've slogged through to get to those vows, details that can derail a loving couple's best intentions. The good news is you don't have to go it alone. In this issue, we've tapped local wedding experts for advice on how to find the right venue, the perfect dress, the most flattering hairstyle, the cake to die for and much more. Since this is the issue of wedding advice, I'd like to add just a few tidbits of my own: Hire the absolute best photographer and videographer you can afford and make sure they know exactly what you want. At my wedding, I opted for more than just family photos -- I arranged a group photo of all my friends, admittedly a unique and colorful bunch. Years later, it's become my very favorite photograph from that day long ago. Second, if you're the bride, be sure your walk-down-the-aisle shoes are about a half size larger than you would normally wear. Believe me, your feet will take a beating before you slip on those flip flops for dancing. And finally, although your wedding day will eventually become a sweet memory, your marriage will always be in the here and now. Love and support each other. Talk it out when necessary. Always kiss goodnight. Enjoy every moment. We love to hear from you. Send your news and views to me at Nancy.Johnson@LifestylePubs.com

Donna's Picks: Give Your Beat Feet A Treat
B
oot season is coming to an end and we're ushering in sandal season. Ladies, it's time to shave our legs again and give our tootsies (dew beaters, wheels) some well deserved attention. Men and women alike can experience the benefits of a professional salon pedicure. Spring is here, our May edition is about weddings and honeymoons. What perfect timing to be invited to VCS Salon and Spa to review their VCS Classic Pedicure. Pedicures are done for cosmetic, therapeutic and medical purposes to prevent nail diseases and disorders. A good pedicure can be very relaxing while relieving stress; who doesn’t need that? Perfect for Bridal parties, couples date, girls night out and more. When I arrived at VCS, I was greeted with smiles and hellos as I was quickly ushered to the pedicure room by Shannon Corbott. Shannon has been doing manicures and pedicures at VCS for 14 years! The treatment started with a nice relaxing massage chair, a cup of mocha and a warm water antibacterial foot soak. Next some much Win a Classic Pedicure for you and a friend from VCS Salon & Spa! needed attention to the cuticles, some nail shaping, a quick buff and a sugar scrub exfoliation for my feet and legs (tip: wear pants you can easily roll up to your knees.) If you have dead skin and calluses on your feet and heels you may need some extra attention with a pumice stone. All this encourages new cell growth to create smoother and more attractive feet (bringing sexy back!) The part I loved the most was the lotion massage, which promotes circulation to relieve tension in the calves and feet. The increase in circulation can help reduce pain. Finally, an application of my favorite OPI nail color and top coat for quicker drying time and I was on my way. A nice treat in the middle of the afternoon and a great way to welcome my toes back into the light of day! VCS Salon & Spa is at 410 South Court Street, Medina 330.723.3998 VcsSalon.com

And now it’s your turn, your once-in-a lifetime-moment. Are you looking for something different, unique, and memorable? How about if we add a beautiful white sandy beach, warm breeze and blue Caribbean waters? Now that would be a fairytale dream come true. But who can afford a destination wedding? Well you would be surprised to learn that a destination wedding can price out anywhere from 50% to 70% less than a traditional stateside wedding. Most brides who choose a destination wedding will tell you they were relaxed on their special day because the work was done for them. Although there are a few little details for the bridal couple to take care of, their destination wedding travel expert handles everything else.

your dreams. With a professional wedding team attending to every detail, Rustic Hills is both romantic and elegant. “We tell couples to let us worry about the details, so they don’t have to,” says banquet manager Ashley Korecky. Ashley puts the personal touch on each wedding by working directly with the bridal couple to turn their dreams into reality. “We offer various wedding packages, but we will also customize them to make sure every couple is getting exactly what they are looking for,” Ashley says. Some of the complimentary wedding services offered are cake cutting, a champagne toast for the bridal table, exclusive use of the grounds, lake, clubhouse and gazebo for photos and a one-year all-inclusive membership. The Rustic Hills Grand Ballroom with its oversized dance floor can accommodate up to 250 guests. The country club’s charming lakeside gazebo is a beautiful setting for an outdoor ceremony of up to 200. For more intimate gatherings, The Executive Club holds up to 125 guests.
A kiss under the stars.
“We also offer groom’s golf packages, all-inclusive menu packages and off-season pricing,” says Ashley,“We are a great venue for bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and brunches as well.” The Rustic Hills executive chef has created a wide variety of menu items to choose from. "Our chef has perfected his chicken Marsala," says Ashley. Other entrée items are grilled BBQ pork loin, baked tilapia with mango salsa, grilled salmon with a Dijonnaise sauce, beef filet with a Cabernet sauce, eggplant Parmesan, wild mushroom risotto, roasted strip loin with whole grain mustard sauce and much more. There are also dinner buffet options as well as hot and cold hors d'oeuvres. our wedding day is one of the most memorable days of your life. Williams on
the Lake co-owners Aly and Mark Williams are intent on making sure your special day is everything you dreamed it would be and more.
An outdoor ceremony at Williams on the Lake
“We do it all.” “We do it all,” says Aly, "We decorate, set up the room, make the cake. We take care of everything – including coordinating your event. We offer full service so your wedding is stress-free.” Williams on the Lake has two reception facilities with an outdoor ceremony site for each. Choose either Lakeside South with its pine-tree-lined courtyard and grapevine-covered walkway leading to the gazebo or Lakeside East with its picturesque moon gate and stone fireplace. Both facilities include decks overlooking an 11-acre private lake for you and your guests to enjoy. A ceremony package includes a suite for the bride and bridesmaids to get ready, extra hall time, and white padded folding chairs for guest seating. Reception packages include six hours of time at the hall of your choice, use of facility tables, chairs, linens, decorations, centerpieces, china, and stemware, your choice of menu, staff service and a personalized wedding cake. You also receive your very own wedding Tying the knot at the moon gate.

You can choose buffet, plate-style, or a unique grill package. “If plate-style is what you like best, you can’t go wrong with our white glove service and beautiful plate presentation,” says Aly. Looking for something a little different? Try the Sizzle Package. As your guests enjoy an al fresco style buffet, Williams on the Lake chefs will prepare your favorites, such as deliciously marinated strip steak and portobello mushroom caps. Standard wedding cakes come at no extra charge and include your choice of various flavors: yellow, chocolate, marble, cherry chip and spice. You can also select from the traditional buttercream frosting or bettercreme, which is similar to a whipped cream. Piece Of Cake No matter how you slice it, these bakeries are sweet ARTICLE NANCY JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED A CUPCAKE A DAY
Celebrating its fifth year in business in 2016, A Cupcake a Day has firmly established itself as one of the most popular – and delicious -- shops in Medina Square. Recently married to Eric Schultz, owner of Medina Square’s Antiquation, Shawna has had a passion for baking since she was a little girl. During her senior year of college, while majoring in Interior Design, she was given a project in which she had to design a restaurant. She decided to design a cupcake restaurant. That idea later became A Cupcake a Day. Shawna creates luscious cupcakes from scratch every day and flavors them with a rotating repertoire of 300 different flavors. Shawna also bakes beautiful wedding cakes – one of her cakes is on the cover of our magazine this month. “The latest trend is the naked cake,” says Shawna, “it’s unfrosted, so it’s less sweet, but it can be filled with frosting, berries or custard. Each tier can be a different flavor such as vanilla, chocolate and red velvet.” But Shawna’s wedding cake flavors don’t stop there. She creates memorable wedding cakes with any one of those 300 cupcake flavors. Try salted caramel, strawberry lemonade, sugar cookie, chocolate peanut butter, chubby hubby, Cleveland Whiskey, raspberry, blackberry or vanilla almond, just to name a few. Wedding cupcakes are also a trend, as well as having a 6-inch cake to stow away in the freezer for your first anniversary. “Book your cake with us about six to eight months before your wedding,” says Shawna, “you don’t have to choose the flavor – you can do that about two weeks prior to your wedding. But you need to book the date because as the sole baker, I need to block out that day for you. “At A Cupcake A Day, we believe in assisting clients to the fullest on their special day. We take into consideration colors and themes as well as seasons to create unique cupcakes and displays for celebrations of any kind. We work with each client to make their vision a reality." he Dress Bridal Boutique in Medina was founded by local bridal expert Sara Recker with one goal in mind: "I wanted to bring something to Northeast Ohio that the bridal scene had not yet experienced." The Dress opened on Medina Square in April 2010, bringing a fresh, vibrant, and contemporary shopping experience to the historic town of Medina, Ohio.

“We want you to walk in the door, feel welcome, and fall in love with your dress,” says Sara, “Our staff will provide you with the highest level of customer care and an extensive knowledge of the latest trends in the bridal industry. We welcome you to bring a few close friends, get ready to have a great time and shop for the perfect wedding gown.” The latest styles for 2016 include separates and sleek fabrics, such as crepe, satin and soft tulle. “With separates, you can put together the dress of your dreams,” says Sara. For instance, a beaded top encrusted with opals and rhinestones can be paired with a long sleek skirt. “You can match a simple lace crop top with a huge volume skirt with tiers of material or a fitted crepe mermaid skirt." Today’s brides aim for comfort. “Although we do have brides who will go all out and just get the gown that is perfect for them.” says Sara. Sara advises brides come into the boutique with an open mind, but with a firm budget in hand. “Know what you can spend and don’t try on anything above your budget. I never want a bride to fall in love with a gown that she cannot afford.” The average price for a wedding dress is between $1,500 to $2,000. “But we can accommodate a $1,200 to $3,600 budget bride,” says Sara. Be prepared to shop for your dress at least nine months in advance. Alterations will be necessary since dresses are designed for what Sara calls a “Coca-Cola” body – with curvy breasts and hips and a nipped-in waist. "Brides come in all shapes and sizes,” Sara says, “so build in enough time to have the dress altered.” Bridal bling is big right now. Many brides are choosing simple dresses and adding jewel-encrusted belts. Designers this year are still showing ivory and champagne dresses, but have also introduced styles in gold and blush tones. Cathedral veils at 108 inches long, worn at the crown of the head, are very popular. Sara recommends brides bring no more than five family members to their dress appointment. “It can be an overwhelming process, so bring just a few people who you feel most comfortable with.” Most of all, Sara and her staff want the bride to choose a dress that she absolutely loves. “That’s our goal and we work with each bride to make sure that happens.” The Dress Bridal Boutique offers dresses and accesso-
ries for the bride, bridal party, flower girl and mother of the bride. By appointment only. 330.952.0636 228 South Court Street, Medina TheDressBridalBoutique.com thedressmedina@gmail.com.

Parting Thoughts
Let's get this party started ARTICLE NANCY JOHNSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

edina resident Kevin Ward has been the deejay of choice for thousands of weddings since founding Midnight Music Entertainment right out of high school in 1992. Now with a staff of seven deejays, Midnight Music offers an exciting evening of reception music from the bridal entrance to the final dance. “We don’t steal the spotlight,” Kevin says, “We’re there to make the evening meaningful to the bridal couple and their guests.” According to Kevin, most wedding receptions require 75 songs, about 25 per hour. “You want to tighten your list and choose the best of the best,” says Kevin. “Pick music that you enjoy and that you think your guests will enjoy. If the bride and groom are having fun, it’s contagious. All the guests will be out on the dance floor, too.” Kevin’s list of top tunes for the reception changes with Billboard’s Hot 100, but these are the songs that are making most bridal couples’ playlists in 2016: Main introduction: Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars. “The first song sets the tone of the evening and gets the party started.” Cake Cutting: Sugar by Maroon 5. “You want something fun and current. Whether the cake cutting is going to be messy or nice, pick a song that reflects the mood.” Dinner: The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra. “Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra – you want smooth crooners and finger-snapping jazz for dinner. Kenny G is out. Michael Bublé is in."
First Dance: Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran. “The first dance is usually the most popular love song of the moment or something timeless like Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers or Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis.” Bridal Party: Wobble by V.I.C. “Couples recognize that the partners in their bridal party aren’t necessarily dating, so they try to have something upbeat and fun rather than romantic. It’s always good to have a song that gets the crowd involved.” Father and Daughter Dance: I Loved Her First by Heartland. “This is a touching moment. Sometimes a bride chooses The Temptations' My Girl or Stealing Cinderella by Chuck Wicks. In some cases, the father and daughter start with something slow and then suddenly the music changes and they do a whole dance routine together. The guests love it.” Mother and Son Dance: Song for Mama by Boys II Men. “It’s surprising how many grooms cry a little bit during this dance. It’s a special moment with their mom. Other songs that work are My Wish by Rascal Flatts and Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. Bouquet Toss: Single Ladies by Beyoncé. “A lot of people don’t think about music
for this part of the reception. But you don’t want dead silence, you want something fun. A lot of couples choose The Stripper by David Rose & Orchestra for the garter removal. Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On or Kenny Loggins’ Danger Zone are also favorites. You want your guests to be laughing and cracking up during this part of the ceremony.” Party Song: Cupid Shuffle by Cupid. “This is today’s version of the Electric Slide.” Last Dance: Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey. "Everybody knows this song by heart. It’s a great song for the end of the evening. It’s joyful, it’s hopeful, it’s about remembering the good time everyone had tonight.” Midnight Music Entertainment provides Disc Jockeys in tuxedos, professional sound systems with over 50,000 songs, photo booth and up-lighting for your wedding. 330.723.8002 kevin@weddingfun.com WeddingFun.com
