Support local businesses, grow the community

I

love Medina County. It's such a lively place, with so many activities, I can never get to them all. Our county library, recreation centers and beautiful parks offer exciting programs daily. There are charity balls, progressive dinners, fundraisers and volunteerism happening throughout the county. Artists perform on Medina's gazebo, at the restaurant down the street, and on a neighbor's front porch. Theater players mount Broadway-worthy productions on stages throughout the county. Hamburgers are made with locally-bred grass-fed beef and smothered with locally-grown mushrooms and Medina County artisan blue cheese, craft beer is brewed right in our neighborhood, and martinis are mixed by hometown mixologists at happy hours all over the county. There are farmers markets, flea markets, summer concerts, Fourth of July festivities and summer festivals everywhere including Medina's International Fest, Wadsworth's Blue Tip Festival, Valley City's Frog Jump, Brunswick's Summer Celebration, Art in the Park, Medina County Fair and so much more. Local businesses drive the economy, bringing visitors and commerce to our county. From the smallest boutique to the largest manufacturing plant, the entrepeneurs who have settled in our county deserve our support. They make our downtowns bustle, which builds our community. They create jobs and contribute to our causes and events. Most owners live in the county and have a vested interest in seeing it thrive and grow. With this, the Locally Owned issue, we really wish we could have featured every Medina County business in our magazine. But, alas, space doesn't permit. However, if there's a particular business you would like to see in an upcoming issue, send a note to our new Editor, Nikki Rhoades at NikkiRhoades@LifestylePubs.com. Nikki is excited to be joining the Medina County Lifestyle team and will give you a full introduction next month. As always, we are inspired by you. Keep in touch.

ike many busy working mothers, Brynne Watkins had every intention to update and add to her children’s baby books as they grew up. “For Luca, my first child, I half-filled his baby book and kept a scrapbook for him until he was two. Then Blake came along. Blake got his name on the first page of his baby book,” says the Valley City mother of two. Brynne, who works in health care sales, knew there was a better way to leave something in writing for her children, something she could give them when they went away to college or got married. “That’s when I came up with the idea of writing each of them a letter once a year on their birthdays,” she says, “and I created a keepsake scrapbook for the letters.” The idea was so popular with her friends that they began to write yearly letters to their children. And Brynne’s scrapbook was so beautiful, her friends begged her to make scrapbooks for them. That’s when Brynne created Your Life in Letters, a child keepsake book now available at Medina’s Root Candles and JK Gift 14

Medina County Lifestyle | July 2016

Brynne on New Day Cleveland Fox 8 in December

Shop, Lovely Paperie in Rocky River, every Nordstrom store across America, target.com and buybuybaby.com. “There’s a girl version and a boy version, each with its own age appropriate designs on the pages,” says Brynne, “There’s a place for a photo and an envelope for the letter. The book retails for $29.99.” But what to write in that letter? Brynne suggests since the letter is penned only once each year, it’s a good time to reflect on what your child did that year. “Mention school and vacations, accomplishments and mishaps, funny things they said or did, your hopes and dreams for them, what you think they might be when they grow up. The keepsake book can be passed from generation to generation. It’s a great way for your grandkids to see what their dad or mom was like when they were young.” Getting the book from concept to retail was a process that Brynne admits wasn’t always easy. “I knew nothing about printing when I got started. A local printer gave me an education on the printing process. I hired a graphic designer, found a printer and searched for a publisher. The first printing wasn’t high enough quality. It was so disappointing. I had to start over with another printer. I also had to find Brynne a manufacturer.” with her Brynne’s background in retail gave children Luca and Blake her an advantage in getting the book into stores. “I’m in health care sales now,” she says “but my first job out of college was helping retail store buyers purchase for their category. I know the buying and selling process. I knew I had to get the book into the right person’s hands. Once I knew who that was, I sent samples to them. It’s a very long process. If a big retail chain decides to carry your product, you have to meet all the specs of that chain.” Brynne had to find and learn how to use an electronic data interface system which is required by big chains. “There’s lots of documentation to sign to meet the big retailers’ requirements. I also had to set up shipping and inventory. My advice to anyone who has an idea is that you have to start somewhere. Even if you don’t know anything about the process, do one thing to get the ball rolling. The entire process is a learning experience.” Brynne hopes busy parents will find the keepsake book a timesaver. “It will relieve you from that baby-book-guilt. It’s easy to keep up with, you simply write one letter every year until your child is an adult. Once you hand it to your grown children, they will treasure the book forever.” Find more information at YourLifeInLetters.com.

M

ike and Patti Boyert have a passion for family, farming and growing in Medina County. Carrying on their family legacies in the garden business, they built their first greenhouse in 1985 at their Farm on Paradise Rd. As their family grew with the addition of 6 children, their business grew with the addition of the Garden Center located at the corner of Wooster Pike and Paradise Rd., and the expansion of 150 acres for their registered beef farm. Stop in any day, and you’ll likely hear Mike’s enthusiasm broadcast on the employee radios “Let’s Rock it Out!” 16

Medina County Lifestyle | July 2016

GARDENING TIPS: “LET’S ROCK IT OUT”

If you’ve met Mike or Patti personally, you know they have a passion for gardening. Whether you are a novice or tenured gardener, they are happy to help you select plants and troubleshoot problems. They advise starting with quality soil, selecting strong plants and being mindful to care for them throughout the season. • Before planting, break up the soil and amend with a compost or peat to give the roots a good start to establish. For pots, Happy Frog is a premium potting mix. • Scout for insects and keep weeds away, protecting plants early from insect or disease is much easier than treating your problems later. Bayer Advanced products are very effective solutions for trees, shrubs and roses. • Watch soil moisture, especially in pots, to keep your plants heathy and fertilize for robust flower and harvest yield. Osmocote and Espoma organic plant foods provide slow-release nutrition for up to 60-90 days; combine with a weekly shot of Miracle-Gro to keep flowers blooming until the first frost. • Don’t be afraid to give your plants a little haircut to trim the spent blooms and invigorate new growth. For shrubs, timing when to trim can make a big difference in blooming and growth results. BOYERT ’S FARM, 4557 PARADISE RD, SEVILLE OH ~ EST 1985 The Boyerts raise cattle, chickens, turkeys and hogs. Crops include corn, soybeans, hay and of course pumpkins for the hayride season. May through September, their barns and lawn are available for weddings and events. Mike and Patti are deeply committed to agriculture and supporting local community. They host educational tours at the farm, support the Ohio Farm Bureau and helped launch the first annual “Square to Square, Route 3 Day” which included over 40 locally-owned shops between Medina and Seville along the Rte 3 corridor. This year the community event will run all weekend, Aug 13-14th, with more raffle prizes and specials planned. BOYERT ’S GREENHOUSE & FARM, 7171 WOOSTER PIKE, MEDINA OH ~ EST 1987 At the Garden Center, the Boyerts maintain approximately one acre of heated greenhouses & cold frames, where they grow 10,000 flats & 50,000 4”-pots of annuals & vegetables, and plant 7,500 hanging baskets & planters each year. They offer an impressive selection of more than 100 tomato varieties and more than 85 pepper varieties. The garden center is open year round, where they host free planting workshops and topical seminars on subjects ranging from container gardening to birding. Open year-round. ROOT CANDELS

(CON TI N U ED)

A well-known sight in M edina

A. I. Root wings it. BUT WE BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW THIS ABOUT ROOT CANDLES

• Behind the Corporate Headquarters on West Liberty Street we have several pollinator gardens sponsored by Pollinator Partnership, Medina Master Gardeners, Ohio State Beekeepers, several seed companies and the Root Company, showing various seed mixtures that corporations, the typical homeowner, the Ohio Department of Transportation and others can use to fill their empty spaces with good food for honey bees and other pollinators. The public is welcome to stroll through the gardens during business hours. • Root Candles uses approximately 5% of all the beeswax produced in the United States each year. • To celebrate the company’s 101st anniversary, they produced a candle that was 110 feet long and weighed 350 lbs. After a photo of the candle was taken, it was carried back to the production facility where it was melted and made into smaller candles that same day. • A.I. Root wrote the first ever published article about successful airplane flights made by the Wright Brothers in his magazine Gleanings in Bee Culture. An archival copy of this magazine is currently on display in the Smithsonian. • After learning about the advances in educating blind and deaf children and contributing to help that effort, A.I. Root received a four-page 24

Medina County Lifestyle | July 2016

.

Amos Ives Ro ot letter from Helen Keller thanking him for his kindness and support. For the rest of their lives, they remained close, personal friends. • In 1928 the company began a transition into candle-making when a local priest made a request for high quality liturgical candles made from beeswax. Today, Root is the leading supplier of liturgical candles to churches all over the world. • The famed Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes at the University of Notre Dame is lit entirely with Root Candles. To Notre Dame students and alumni, the Grotto is a special place to spend a few quiet moments, and especially during football weekends and finals, you might have difficulty finding a candle to light! • Today, the company is led by the fifth generation of the Root family, Brad Root. Six other members of the Root family currently work here. • Medina was once known as “The Sweetest Town on Earth” because of all of the honey that was produced by the A.I. Root Company. • At its peak, the Root Company had almost three acres of apiaries that housed 228 hives dedicated to rearing queen honey bees.

Renovate & Refine

Tips for Tip Top Tablescapes ARTICLE KATIE HEINZ | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

A

s an Interior Designer and creative mind, I'm sometimes presented with some unusual project requests. At a committee meeting to discuss fundraiser ideas, the topic of Tablescaping was presented. What in the world is that? Tablescape noun: An artistic arrangement of articles on a table. As it turned out we have since tablescaped multiple events in the area and had a lot of fun doing it. Here are my tips to help you create your own Tip Top Tablescape for whatever event you're hosting. SELECT A THEME

Have an idea of what story your table is portraying. It could be as simple as a picnic

in the park, a holiday like 4th of July, or perhaps just a color – everything in green. WHERE DO I FIND ITEMS?

Go through your cabinets and closets to see how you can repurpose. Turning a stemware glass upside down and putting a votive on top makes a great candlestick. Ordinary Christmas lights in glass containers can bring a soft elegance and glow to a table. BUILD IT UP

Containers and boxes of different sizes should be used to fill out the space and create visual interest. Glass apothecary jars can be filled with theme-related items to help anchor everything else around it. Varying heights is key.

Gifts you want to give

& Gifts you’d LOVE to get!

LAYER IT UP

All tables should start with a base tablecloth in a neutral color. Find coordinate patterns to layer on in fabric toppers, runners and placemats. Fabric remnants can be cut into square placemats and colorful tulle can be a bountiful runner. Tablescaping is all about being creative. Repurpose things and push the envelope a bit. Parting Thoughts

Strengthen Medina County, Buy Local

Mike Kovack, Medina County Auditor

W

hat can YOU do to strengthen Medina County? As a lifelong Medina County resident I am always tremendously impressed by the people and institutions that make this a great place to live. We have outstanding schools, outstanding non-profit organizations and most importantly – people who are willing to step in and help when needed. A question I often hear from people when I’m out and about in the community is this – “How can I help?” The answer is really very simple – one of the most significant things you can do to strengthen Medina County and help everyone in our community - is to simply buy local. How does this help? Studies have shown that a dollar spent at a local independent merchant returns 3 times more money to our local economy than one spent at a chain (almost 50 times more than buying from a large online

WORDS MIKE KOVACK | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

store). If every person in the county shifted just $100 a year in purchases to locally owned businesses, that would create an impact of over $52,000,000 in our community! Why does that matter? These expenditures not only increase the prosperity of local organizations and residents, they create jobs and increase salaries at existing jobs. Better yet, local businesses make more efficient use of our roads, sewers & safety services and generate more tax revenue per sales dollar. Translated – more and healthier local businesses help keep your taxes lower. In addition to creating a healthier local economy, shopping local also makes for a healthier community. Local independent businesses normally use less land, carry more locally made products, are located closer to residents and create less traffic and air pollution – meaning we all win in the end.

So next time you buy that cup of coffee, next time you buy that pair of tennis shoes, next time you eat out for lunch or dinner – frequent your locally owned stores run by your neighbors and friends. It’s what YOU can do to keep Medina County strong and vibrant! Mike Kovack, Medina County Auditor, is a graduate of Wadsworth High School and has served as Medina County Auditor since 1993. He is a former small business owner himself and holds a business administration degree from Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree in public finance from the University of Akron. He publishes a “Weekend Update” of activities and news in Medina County each Thursday. To receive Auditor Kovack’s Weekend Update, send an email tomkovack@medinaco.org with “Weekend Update” in the subject line.
