Pets in the Community

W

orking on this month's magazine was an amazing experience for me as the newbie on the Medina County Lifestyle team. When I formerly worked as a reporter, one of my favorite things to do was to provide a voice for those in our county who could not speak, and it was a lot of fun to continue spending my time with animals all over Medina County. I am always inspired and in awe of the great people and organizations in the Medina County community. It was wonderful to begin my career as an editor working with animal people—in my opinion, they are the best kind of people. I grew up surrounded by pets, and I cannot remember a point in my life when I was ever without the company of my furry friends. In this issue, you will meet a lot of people whose lives also revolve around animals. The animal experts in this issue offer their knowledge talk about everything from equine expertise to behavior advice. They remind us that our pets and wild neighbors are an integral part of our community.

Wings and Wisdom LAURA JORDAN OFFERS ADVICE TO KEEP BIRDS SAFE

ARTICLE NIKKI RHOADES PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY MEDINA RAPTOR CENTER

T

hroughout the summer, Medina Raptor Center Executive Director Laura Jordan works from sun

up to sun down. She has worked tirelessly since she founded the nonprofit bird rehabilitation center in 1991 to educate the community about birds as well as to provide the appropriate general and medical care to birds in need. Although most birds are currently reaching the end of their nesting season, Medina County residents may still encounter young or injured birds in need of help. To keep you informed and to keep our wild feathered friends safe, Jordan offers some pointers to keep in mind.

“IT IS NORMAL TO SEE FLEDGLING BIRDS ON THE GROUND.”

When baby birds “fledge,” they reach the point in their life where they have developed the feathers necessary for flight. When these birds are ready to leave their nests, it is normal for them to spend around four days on the ground as they learn to fly. These birds are being taken care of by their parents, who will continue to feed and watch them. Grounded birds should be observed for sign of injury or abandonment. 14

ooking to have some fun in the sun with your four legged friends? Fortunately, Medina County has a number of dog parks with a variety of features for your pet to enjoy off-leash. Dog parks typically have a number of rules to keep the area safe for both dogs and people. They may prohibit aggressive dogs, sick dogs, dogs in heat, and occasionally young puppies. Dog owners will be responsible for supervising and cleaning up after their pet. Before entering a dog park, make sure that you have read the rules posted at the entrance. We highlighted a few dog parks within Medina County that are worth visiting.

“It is not hard to make a difference in your community. I’m not anybody special. I do not have a college education. I just do what I love, and I love what I do.” DOGGIE DAY CARE

Pam Voss had worked in a kennel in Sharon Center for 11 years when she saw the Medina Creative Pet Play building being constructed. When she learned that the building would soon be home to a Medina Creative Housing vocational program for individuals with special needs, she was hooked. Due to her expertise, Voss joined the Medina Creative Pet Play team as manager. When the organization opened its doors in March of 2013, the workers, vocational students, and volunteers had no idea that they would outgrow the building. “We started out serving only a few dogs at a given time,” says Voss. “But it just kept growing.” In July, they moved into a new 5,000 square foot building, located just behind their former building off of Grande Blvd. in Medina. With nearly twice as much space, their services are better than ever. From doggie day care and boarding to grooming, the staff works hard to keep their two-legged and four-legged customers happy. Voss describes Medina Creative Pet Play as a win-win for both the workers and the pets. “I just love watching our workers accomplish things. It is amazing to equip people with the skills needed to go out and find future employment, and along the way I get to see their pride as their accomplishments increase in number and frequency. And the dogs? They just love the endless attention.” Although it is not always an easy job, Voss loves spending her days at Medina Creative Pet Play. “The best part is knowing that we provide a service to the community as well as to physically and mentally handicapped individuals that are looking for employment opportunities. And the staff is here for a reason—they really love animals. People want to know that their special pet is taken care of, and our passionate, caring staff is equipped with all the skills to go above and beyond in their caregiving.” August 2016 | Medina County Lifestyle

Three QuickTraining Tips ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY NIKKI RHOADES

20

Medina County Lifestyle | August 2016

D

r. Linda Randall, the owner and veterinarian at Cloverleaf Animal Hospital, has acquired years of experience and knowledge working with animals. She has overwhelmingly observed that, for every pet owner, one thing remains true: either you are training your pet, or your pet is training you. “Behavior is statistically the number one reason why people give up an otherwise healthy animal,” she says. Randall and Jessica Taylor, a veterinary technician at Cloverleaf Animal Hospital, work with people and their animal companions through various types of training, covering everything from party tricks to agility course training. “For people and pets alike, behavior is explained through economics,” says Taylor. The economics of behavior are very simple. If a behavior results in a rewarding outcome, you are going to do it. If it results in a negative outcome, over time you will stop doing it. The challenge of training involves identifying what is valuable to your pet, and sticking to a routine of positivity and reinforcement. This dynamic duo of behavioral experts offered three quick tips to make training a pleasant experience for you and your pet.

1. SET THEM UP FOR SUCCESS.

Randall: The more they are right, the better they are going to learn. If they think they are always going to be wrong, why should they even try? That's called “learned helplessness,” and it afflicts people and animals. If you were to go into a math class and get every question wrong, you'd suddenly think you are bad at math. But if the teacher sets you up with something you can do and slowly moves forward once they are certain you are

ready—and, of course, reinforces you along the way—then you are open to learning even when the going gets tough. 2. REINFORCE WHAT YOU WANT, IGNORE WHAT YOU DON'T WANT.

Taylor: Reinforce good behavior. If your pet does what you want, give them something they want. If they do something that you do not like, do not give them any attention or reinforcement. For example, let's say that your dog is jumping on you when you first get home. You should ignore them or turn and walk away. If they come up to you and sit down, you should respond with positive reinforcement. Your pet may not always be looking for a treat—they may just be looking for attention from you. Or, for an example with people, let's consider the class clown. He likes to be goofy in exchange for attention. It does not matter to him if it is negative attention, so long as he is noticed. If you were to ignore the class clown when he's being goofy and give him attention when he's sitting quietly and doing his work, all of a sudden there will be a shift in behavior. Find what is valuable to your pet, and offer that in exchange for good behavior. 3. MANAGE, MANAGE, MANAGE!

Randall: Rather than get frustrated and yell at your pet, think to yourself, “I can't train my dog in the next five minutes to not jump on the counter top to steal food. Instead, what can I do to solve this problem?” The answer is find a way to manage it. In this case, you will instruct your family to not leave food on the counter. Then, consider what you want to do in the future to address this issue. Do you want to just keep managing it? That's fine, if it is doable and you are okay with managing the situation. If you want to teach your dog, you might need some assistance and advice, but that's another option. CONTINUED >

Lessons From The Horse’s

Mouth

Commitment, Coordination, Communication, and Confidence ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY NIKKI RHOADES

M

ary Waickman has been around horses her whole life, which makes her a perfect teacher for aspiring riders. She offers lessons at Destiny Farm in Medina, where she passes on her knowledge and expertise to a wide variety of students. Though riders are gaining a plethora of skills from working with Waickman, they may not realize that many of the skills they have acquired translate into their daily lives. “Horses teach a lot beside just how to ride,” she says.

COMMITMENT

Unlike many sports, working with horses requires an individual to devote a great deal of time to caring for an animal. 24

Medina County Lifestyle | August 2016

“This is not like some sports where you can put your equipment away and come back to it whenever you want,” says Waickman. “The fun comes with work and responsibility, too.” While a rider needs instruction on a regular basis to gain a set of skills, a horse requires daily care. As riders progress beyond learning basic riding skills and begin to transition into competitions, their responsibilities will grow. “You have to be all in on this, and you have to be focused. You cannot be distracted, as it is important to operate in the here and now. Your horse will not know that your friend dissed you, or that your girlfriend went out with your best friend. They don't know that, and they don't care. That is not something that is in their world. You have to put everything aside and focus on the task at hand.” This is very similar to the way in which the working world operates, she points out. When an individual commits to a job, they must leave their distracting thoughts and problems at home if they wish for their career to grow. As a career grows, so do responsibilities. “It is a long-term commitment as well as daily,” she says. COORDINATION

There is much more to horse riding than casual rides through a forest trail. For many, horse riding is an athletic endeavor. Riders must be fit and coordinated to be successful in a competitive world. “We train riders for everything from intramural to national level conpetitions, and there is much that they must accomplish before they can get to that point. And believe me, riders feel a push to succeed.” When competing, riders and horses work in a partnership. Both must work in unison to produce a smooth transition from movement to movement. “It should look flawless, as if the horse is reading the rider's mind.” When it comes to competitions, practice makes perfect. A great deal of physical work and training goes into preparing both a rider and a horse for a competition. COMMUNICATION

One of the benefits of horse riding is that self-driven individuals can still participate

in a sport without working on a big team. However, they do form a partnership and bond with their horse, and that requires them to create a line of communication between horse and rider. Before communication can be established, a rider must create a mutual understanding with their horse. “You must feel empathy and understand something that is not going to speak your language or assess your skills,” explains Waickman. “You need to communicate ideas with them, and that communication has to be something that the horse understands. You must learn to communicate on their level.” CONFIDENCE

Waickman has worked with students of all ages and has observed an immeasurable change in many of them. “Throughout it all, you build faith in yourself with the help of a horse,” she says. In competitions, riders must go in front of strangers in a new place and effectively ride their horse. A great deal of preparation goes into each competition, but the outcome is heavily reliant on the rider's confidence. “It's the same thing as making a presentation in the corporate world. You have to prepare, rehearse, and repeat until you feel confident with your work. I have observed personalities blossom as people find themselves through working with horses.” Horses can also be a very calming presence to many people. In the past, Waickman has had groups come to Destiny Farm through the Medina County Juvenile Drug Court for therapy sessions at her stables. “Watching them interact with horses helps a counselor observe how these troubled teens go about problem solving, communication, and working with a team. It can be a very therapeutic experience. I have seen people undergo remarkable changes here at Destiny Farm. “I love watching somebody transition from an awkward kid to a young, confident rider. Sure, my instruction is important, but it is up to them to build confidence in themselves and to form a bond with their horse. I've been offering lessons since 2002. If it was not incredibly rewarding, I would not be doing it. Luckily, horses are great teachers of both skills and life lessons.” August 2016 | Medina County Lifestyle

ntroduced in 2009, RED Day, which stands for Renew, Energize and Donate, is Keller Williams Realty's annual day of service. Each year on the second Thursday of May, Keller Williams associates celebrate Keller Williams Vice Chairman Mo Anderson's birthday by spending the day away from their businesses to serve worthy organizations and causes in their communities.

This year's project was to paint a barn for Cal, 84 and Mary Ann Bias, 82. Built 40 years ago, the barn hadn’t been painted in about 15 years. Cal is a Korean War veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart. The couple have been married 62 years and have four children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Cal and Mary Ann loved having everyone at their home. Tompot Turf Care donated mulch to freshen up the yard. CHM Lending and Title Alliance of Northeast Ohio provided lunch for the volunteers. RED Day is just another example of the commitment to each other and to the cities and towns where the Keller Williams team members live and work. In addition to Red Day, Keller Williams Tri-County Properties hosts one charity event a year that also raises funds to support local charities. Past recipients of proceeds raised at the Annual Charity Fundraiser include Medina Creative Housing, Shop-With-A-Cop, Hospice of Medina County, Cups Café, and The Children’s Center of Medina County. Known at times as the "Velvet Hammer" for her uncompromising approach, Mo Anderson's business skills and leadership are uniquely matched by her faith and compassion. She is the heart of Keller Williams Realty, and her personal integrity and unending drive are touchstones that have made Keller Williams one of the most successful franchises in real estate history.
