Arts and Culture in Medina County I
SEPTEMBER 2016 publisher
Richard Mellert | Richard.Mellert@LifestylePubs.com
have always adored Medina County for its diverse community. Everywhere I turn, I encounter another person with a story to tell. This month was an amazing opportunity to delve into the core of our community's culture while shedding spotlight on some of our local artists.
From landscapers, to interior designers, to musicians, this issue is filled cover-to-cover with talent. I was particularly excited to learn about the wide variety of artwork displayed within our local libraries, and I think you will be, too. After putting together all of the stories for this month, I relaxed with a cup of coffee, a number of paints, and a blank canvas. I saw so much talent and beauty every day for weeks, and it awoke my creative flow. Whether or not you are an artist, I hope that these stories of Medina County culture and art will inspire and captivate you.

TIPS FOR TIP TOP TABLESCAPES KATIE HEINZ PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Medina County Lifestyle | September 2016
A
s an Interior Designer and creative mind, I'm sometimes presented with some unusual project requests. At a committee meeting to discuss fundraiser ideas, the topic of Tablescaping was presented. What in the world is that? Tablescape noun: An artistic arrangement of articles on a table. As it turned out we have since tablescaped multiple events in the area and had a lot of fun doing it. Here are my tips to help you create your own Tip Top Tablescape for whatever event you're hosting.
SELECT A THEME
Have an idea of what story your table is portraying. It could be as simple as a picnic in the park, a holiday like 4th of July, or perhaps just a color – everything in green.
Experience the Difference
WHERE DO I FIND ITEMS?
Our experienced sales staff will guide you step by step through your new flooring. cabinet. or granite countertop purchase. From the moment you walk through the door, our team will meet and exceed your expectations from inspiration to installtion. With so many options under one roof. it has never been easier to complete your project.
Go through your cabinets and closets to see how you can repurpose. Turning a stemware glass upside down and putting a votive on top makes a great candlestick. Ordinary Christmas lights in glass containers can bring a soft elegance and glow to a table. BUILD IT UP
Containers and boxes of different sizes should be used to fill out the space and create visual interest. Glass apothecary jars can be filled with theme-related items to help anchor everything else around it. Varying heights is key.
FULL SERVICE INSTALLATION KNOWLEDGEABLE + PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATES
LAYER IT UP
All tables should start with a base tablecloth in a neutral color. Find coordinate patterns to layer on in fabric toppers, runners and placemats. Fabric remnants can be cut into square placemats and colorful tulle can be a bountiful runner. Tablescaping is all about being creative. Repurpose things and push the envelope a bit. Happy Decorating!

hen Aurelia Ford-Martin and Steve Martin moved Sparrow Art Gallery into Medina Public Square just over a year ago, they were met with enthusiasm from day one. Since they opened in their original Lodi location three years ago, they have built up a unique collection of art from both local and international artists. “We are on a mission to promote fair trade art,” says Aurelia FordMartin. “We go on mission trips to Haiti each year, plus we've been to Costa Rica, Mexico, and the Navajo Reservation out West. We love to help and promote artisans in impoverished countries, and we love using art to bring people together.” When she graduated from Western New Mexico University, FordMartin knew that she wanted to

begin to raise awareness of Mata Ortiz pottery in her home state of Ohio. In the Southwestern United States, many people are aware of the unique pottery, but few people outside of that region are aware of the Mata Ortiz style. “About a hundred miles south of the New Mexico border is the small village of Mata Ortiz, where people settled around the turn of the century in the hopes that they would find work with the railroads. When the railroad did not take off, many people began farming. They found shards of pottery from the Paquimé people scattered about. They wanted to recreate the pottery, and over a course of decades they figured it out. The pottery is made of pigments that come directly from the ground, and they make a pinch coil pot with clay. It's all hand-built and fired in the ground. This pottery is so unique and beautiful, and the detail is amazing. They use fine brushes made of human hair.” For many years, Americans were able to travel to Mexico to purchase the beautiful Mata Ortiz pottery. However, many artisans began to lose business in the early 2000's when drug cartels made travel in Mexico particularly unsafe. “We promote art, and we love what we do,” says Steve Martin. “There is a lot packed into our little gallery. A lot of stories, a lot of creativity, and a lot of artwork that is tied to us in a very personal way, like the pottery that inspired Aurelia in her time in New Mexico. We have relationships with Haitian artists, and they look forward to us visiting every year.” While the gallery features a gorgeous array of Haitian jewelry, pictures, and metal decorations, it also features an impressive amount of local art. From chromatic photography by Bill Beuther, whose work is featured in Brunswick library, to Jane Effinger-Corbus' wind-powered whirligigs, the art represented
in Sparrow Art Gallery is truly unusual and captivating. Inspired by the passion for art that exists in Northeast Ohio, FordMartin now offers Painting Parties out of Sparrow Art Gallery. “I do Painting Parties and private painting lessons. For our parties, we try to make it a custom paint project. We start with a minimum of four people, but groups can grow in size from there. We have done everything from baby showers to retirement parties, and it is a personalized, private event with your friends. We also do Paint your Pet promotional events to benefit the SPCA, where I draw pictures of attendees' pets on canvases and help them as they paint. I love using art to help bring our community together.” Over the last three years, the Martins have learned that each artist has an individual style that makes their work unique and beautiful. They have also learned to expect a variety of mediums, as their studio is full of blown

hough Chris Peters went to college for finance and investments, he could not ignore his past growing up in the greenhouse and plant-nursing industry. When he founded Peters Professional Landscaping in 1992, Peters says it was easy to “go back to his roots.” “My job is all about using creativity and design to bring people's landscape dreams to life,” says Peters. “There is a lot of artistry in landscaping, and the best part is that each project has a unique story.” Peters Professional Landscaping is a full-service landscaping company that works year round to create their masterpieces. In the warmer months of the year, they do everything from landscape design to installation, hardscaping, water features, trimming, pruning, mulching, edging, and general maintenance. In the winter, they provide snow removal and salting services. With a staff of 20 landscaping experts and over a decade of experience, Chris Peters is Medina's go-to landscaping master. For people that are considering landscaping their home or business, he offered a list of tips to keep in mind. NOW IS THE BEST TIME TO REVAMP YOUR LANDSCAPE.
The fall season is really the ideal time to revamp your landscape and get it ready for the
winter months. Things root better, and we have warm days accompanied by cool nights. For first-time landscaping clients, landscaping now leads to less maintenance as far as watering. Summer tends to be too dry for plant installation, but the cool nights ensure that the ground stays moist so that plants can thrive. VISIT THE EXPERTS AND ASK QUESTIONS.
Local garden centers can be a wealth of knowledge to those that are looking to bring a vision to life. Find a good, reputable landscape company, and they'll help you out too. The goal is to play with the exterior design of the house to create an overall image that is pleasing. Whether your home is vinyl, natural wood, or rock, you want to incorporate plant material that goes well with the exterior of the building. A lot of intricate artistry can go into landscaping, and it is good to have a vision so that you can find the perfect group to help you carry it out. Do not be afraid to ask questions—in fact, you may learn of different styles and options that may appeal to you. GET CREATIVE, AND PERSONALIZE YOUR LANDSCAPE.
With landscaping, you can get creative with different kinds of bird habitats, different types of sculptures and garden decorations, and different kinds of bird feeders. CONTINUED >

AN INDUSTRY “ROOTED” IN ARTISTRY
(CON TI N U ED)
You have many options for water features. Your patios, as far as design, can take on a lot of intricacy. And of course, you have a large palette of colors to work with. It is important to keep in mind that you have many options to help personalize your space. Landscapers will take on projects of all sizes, and we love the design and build aspect of bringing your vision to life and making it perfect for you. YOUR DESIGN SHOULD COMPLEMENT YOUR PERSONALITY.
It is important to have a design that is complementary to you. Do you want your yard to be dramatic, or subtle? Do not be afraid to draw inspiration from the world around you. I travel around the country, and I draw inspiration from different areas and the many different types of architecture that I have seen. Compatibility is so important in landscaping—the design should work well with the exterior of your home, the shape of your yard, and your own personality. DO YOUR RESEARCH, AND HAVE FUN.
There are many possibilities for landscape design, depending on your particular vision. Some people may want storage structures in their yard—for that, we work with high-end Weaver Barns. They are an Ohio company that produces beautiful products. Others may want outdoor grilling stations or fire pits. Research the type of environment you wish to create and explore your options, and find a landscaper that also does their own research. We constantly reevaluate our services and ask homeowners questions to ensure that we provide a quality service that aligns with their wants and needs. Landscaping is all about making your dream a reality, so have fun with it. Know your options and dream big!

Wolff Bros. Supply Co. Pursues a Bright Future ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY NIKKI RHOADES
"
So," said the solar panel to the wind turbine. "What are your thoughts on renewable energy?" "Honestly," replied the wind turbine, "I'm a big fan." Like many people looking toward a future fueled by alternative energy sources, the Medina-based company Wolff Bros. Supply Co. is a "big fan" of cutting electrical costs and going green. In 2013, Wolff Bros. took the first step toward going green when they installed a roof-mounted 240 watt solar panel system. With 224 shiny SolarWorld panels, they were able to produce a total of 53,760 watts per year. After seeing the success of the roof-mounted panels, the Medina-based company expanded their solar panel collection this summer by adding a ground-mounted 250 watt system with 720 SolarWorld panels, which will produce an estimated total of 180,000 watts per year. The panels produce roughly 40 percent of the electricity usage at the company's Medina headquarters on Wolff Road. Which is impressive, considering that the large facility is also complete with a showroom filled floor-to-ceiling with a variety of decorative lamps, wall-mounted fixtures and chandeliers. Wolff Bros., which is a plumbing, electrical, and heating wholesale distributor, prides themselves on their go green initiatives. “We're very good with green energy,” says Electrical Division Coordinator Kevin Hickey. “All of our outdoor lighting is LED, which requires less electricity and is very energy efficient. We are looking at putting LED on the interior of all of our buildings as well.
22
Medina County Lifestyle | September 2016
And, of course, we have left room for expanding our ground-mounted solar panels down the line.” Hickey says that the company first began exploring solar power as an option in 2012. They were looking for a safe investment to help them “go green,” and solar panels appeared to be a perfect fit. “We see solar continuing to take off and become better and more efficient as technology is more refined,” says Hickey, who admits that he never imagined working with solar power when he started working with Wolff Bros. nine years ago. “Solar, as compared to other options, was best for us because it requires little maintenance. The system is kind of plug-and-play, so you can keep adding onto your system with little difficulty, as we did this summer. In the long run, it will pay itself off.” He explains that similar forms of alternative energy production, such
as wind turbines, required much more maintenance due to moving parts and would not come with warranties. Though wind energy can be a great opportunity for other companies to pursue, it was not the right fit for Wolff Bros. He also points out that solar panels can be installed anywhere—even on a home. He says that he has encountered some systems that produce as much as 80% of the energy that a typical household may consume. “It's been a great fit for us, and we would love to lend assistance to anyone looking to switch to a greener lifestyle. If you are interested in learning more about the pros and cons of solar power, give us a call and we will put you in contact with solar installation experts.” For more information on Wolff Bros. he Medina County District Library is composed of six libraries scattered throughout the county. Each library acts as a cultural hub to its hometown, but they also each honor a variety of unique artists. Throughout the year, Brunswick, Buckeye, Highland, Lodi, and Medina Library host art shows in their designated gallery spaces. Though they feature artists for short periods in their shows, many more artists have found ways to leave a more permanent impact on the libraries. “We believe that art and literature are both integral parts of culture,” says Senior Administrative Assistant Tammy Nabdrasy, who coordinates art shows at the Medina Library. “We strive to be a cultural center. We love to bring arts and people together.” The local libraries have solidified their belief that art and literature go hand-in-hand in many ways. Not only do they have partnerships with the Medina County Art League and Medina County Arts Council, who both provide displays and art classes throughout the year, but they have also made each building into a richly-decorated monument that celebrates a perfect union between literature and art. “The architecture of our buildings make for a lot of little surprises, as you cannot see everything at once,” says Theresa Laffey, Assistant Director of the Medina County District Library. “I think we reinforce that with the artwork we have chosen to display throughout them—there is so much detail and intricacy in everything.”
When the libraries took on an expansion project in 2008, the staff decided to begin seeking an abundance of artwork to decorate the updated libraries. “We were looking to have a variety of art forms represented throughout our buildings,” explains Laffey. “From metal sculptures to floor-to-ceiling paper cutout landscapes, we now have a little bit of everything in the district.” Each library features a healthy mix of local and out-of-state artists that use beautiful and mind-blowing mediums to create unique art. Each piece of art adds to the overall personality of the library and reinforces a sense of community pride. For example, the centerpiece of Medina Library is a breathtaking glass mosaic by Maryland-based artist Yulia Hanansen. The mosaic, named Chippewa Creek: Spring Continuum, is inspired by a picture depicting the familiar Chippewa Creek landscape. Husband Charles Basham and wife Julie Friedman, an artist duo based out of Medina, both have pieces in the library that immortalize local landscapes. Celebrated illustrator Dan Andreasen, also a Medina County native, has provided original illustrations to the libraries. Paintings by a local World War II-era artist, Franklin Bates, are also on display. “There is a lot of talent in our community,” notes Nabdrasy. “The variety of skills I have encountered here blows my mind. I especially love seeing the work by local artists that show with us. It is CONTINUED >

Brunswick, Highland, and Medina Library will each have art shows on display this month. On September 17 and 18, the Medina Needlework Guild will host their 34th Annual Needle Art Show. Financial Buzz
Pointers to Protect Your Money ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY NIKKI RHOADES
T
here has never been a point in time where the market has been this high and interest rates have been this low. Normally, there is not that big of a disparity between the two, so people are really unsure of where to make investments. If they invest in the stock market, they will be getting in at an all-time high. Bonds are usually regarded as a safe hiding place—but that only works well if interest rates are starting to rise. Fortunately, Dino LoPresti of LoPresti Financial Group has offered some advice regarding how to protect and wisely invest your money.
• What is unfortunate is that some places that are commission-based will describe themselves as a fiduciary with a Series 65 license, but they may also have a license to sell investments on a commission. That is pretty disingenuous, though not an uncommon practice. The only way to ensure that you are working with a true licensed fiduciary is to ask, “What kind of licenses do you have?” If they only have the Series 65, then they are a licensed fiduciary and will act in your best interest. If they have anything else, they may also work on commission and would not be your best option to pursue.
• It is important to understand that the vast majority of investments are sold on a commission basis. There is normally some kind of conflict of interest in this type of scenario. For example, let's say you come in with $100,000 to invest. If I am a commission advisor and I offer you an investment with a six percent commission, that would be $6,000. There might be an investment that is much better for you but only pays me one percent, or $1,000, but with major brokerage firms you will not hear those options because they are not as profitable. They essentially believe that if you have the money needed to make an investment, it is a suitable investment, even if it is more beneficial to them than to you.
• Also ask an advisor, “Are you paid more for recommending one investment over another?” If they say yes, then they are acting in their own interests and not in yours.
• The best option for investing is to work with a licensed fiduciary. Licensed fiduciaries by law act in a person's best interest. They cannot sell an investment that pays a commission out of a client's money. These places should have what is called a “Series 65” license. We are very upfront about being a licensed fiduciary, because very few advisors have a fiduciary license. But these are the types of advisors that are best to work with, as they get audited and are bound by law to do what is best for their clients. The first question to ask is always, “Are you a licensed fiduciary?”

Medina County Lifestyle | September 2016
• The final thing to ask a potential advisor is, “What is your commission?” Ask to see that in writing. With fiduciaries, before someone becomes a client, they will initial in three different places and sign a document that clearly states the fee so there are no surprises. It is very straightforward, whereas with brokerage firms you may encounter hidden fees. When it all boils down, investing is about making money. It is important to ensure that you work with an advisor that knows what is best for you and wants to help you succeed. The best thing to do is ask questions along the way, and to
make sure that you are completely comfortable with the financial group you choose to work with.

n 1859, a group of people in Medina made a decision that would preserve a beloved aspect of local culture for years to come. They decided to form a town band, and young men from every walk of life eagerly purchased instruments and began studying sheet music. The concerts put on by the “Medina Brass Band” or “Medina Cornet Band” were well-attended opportunities to enjoy socializing and entertainment in the heart of the City of Medina. Uptown Park, located at the center of Medina Public Square, was set aside for development in 1817 and was enclosed in a white picket fence at the time of the band's founding. The musicians would often perform in a corner of the square before the first bandstand was erected in 1867, though they traveled across the county, performing in Litchfield, Lafayette, and other townships and villages. The group performed for holidays, parades, and political rallies. Notably, they also performed at reunions of Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiments from the Civil War. Over the past 157 years, the band has gone through some remarkable changes. Now, they are known as the Medina Community Band, and both men and women of every background make up the 80-piece group. The band has been under the baton of 20 different directors, and it has entertained generations of musicians

and music-lovers alike. Despite the band's changes, at the core, it still serves as a celebration of small-town culture. The current conductor, Marcus Neiman, has served the band for 43 years. As the longest-serving conductor in the history of the band, he explains that a deeply-rooted appreciation for the arts exists in Medina County and has made it easy for the band to thrive. “Our fans are extremely loyal and many have attended concerts for generations, being brought to their first concert by their parents or grandparents and, in turn, bringing their children and grandchildren to concerts. Many fans attended concerts long before I became conductor and still come to the concerts now.” The ensemble meets weekly each September through July. Each summer, the band performs weekly in the Medina Square Gazebo at the center of Uptown Park, drawing crowds of 700 to 1500 people. Though their summer concert season has come to a close, the group is currently preparing for their upcoming Veterans Day Concert, Winter Concert, and Spring Concert. “Town bands are part of the social fabric of most American communities,” says Neiman. “The town band offers adult musicians the opportunity to perform for their community and to keep alive the music for the great American concert band.”
“The band is composed of members of the community who perform for the community,” says Neiman, who fondly explains that though the band has changed over the years, it remains a staple of Medina culture. For more information on upcoming concerts, visit MedinaCommunityBand.org. Musicians interested in joining the group should contact Marcus Neiman at marcusneiman@zoominternet.net.
