ChòpnBlòk’s, the West African culinary concept by James Beard Nominee and Houston restaurateur Ope Amosu, continues its mission to make the region's cuisine an essential part of everyday dining while celebrating African culture.
ChòpnBlòk Montrose integrates elements that balance everyday African experiences with those of the African American and broader communities. In the restaurant, every detail draws from this inspiration, including the art, textiles, and architecture, creating an environment that highlights artistic expression.
Similar to the interior design elements, the Montrose location introduces Amosu's broader culinary vision through exclusive new dishes alongside ChòpnBlòk's fan favorites like the Motherland and TradBlòk Pairings. The food expands to include Nigerian culinary staples and wider West African influences.

mud-finished wall, referencing traditional African mud walls. The bar and community tables feature a pattern inspired by Aso Oke, a traditional West African woven fabric. Designed by Nigerian American textile artist Shade Akanbi for Clay Imports, these elements highlight the significance of African craftsmanship, with custom tables by Objecktfab.
"Chòpnblòck is more than a restaurant; it is a community hub, a place of education, enlightenment, and camaraderie with food at the forefront," said Gin Braverman of Gin Design Group. "My team and I dove into West African culture with the guidance of Ope and his creative director, Zainob of AMAO Creative. We connected them with design sources from our network, and they shared cultural elements
that we manifested in the interior design components. This back and forth was integral in creating and curating the final product."
Custom wallpaper by Nigerian artist Uzo Njoku is placed throughout the space, including the bookshelf wall and restroom vestibule, bringing modern African art to the forefront. Shelving behind the bar showcases ethically sourced handmade African products, curated by Houston-based shop Root To Home, while a collection of cookbooks and coffee table books by notable Black authors supplied by Kindred Stories are available for purchase.

Better Health & Great Design
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHAIRMA DESIGN GROUP
Huge windows fill this large living room with light. Chairma Design Group brought in cushy sofas and chairs and a beautiful chandelier.
Well-appointed bars, charming pantries, beautiful kitchens and luxurious bathrooms are the stock in trade of Cindy and her team at Chairma Design Group. In recent years, her life and her work have turned toward better health.
Cindy’s work has been honored by Houston’s Best, Prism and ASID. This month, she is being honored as the Houston Design District’s newest Leader In Design.
A West Texas native, Cindy moved to Houston more than 30 years ago. She was busy raising children when she found herself in her 40s and in need of a job. She’d lived in homes, fixed them up and sold them and was good at it.
Having lived in several homes, she understood how every room in a home should live, and she knew she would be good at interior design. Her philosophy is that every home should have function, beauty, ease and purpose, but above all, they should have balance.
About two and a half years ago, Cindy met the love of her life – Dion Ruzicka –and they married 21 days after their second date. After four months of marriage, Dion became ill and was diagnosed with lymphatic leukemia. Instead of an arduous regimen of traditional medicine, they opted for a natural method of breathing exercises and cold plunge treatments. Today, leukemia shows up only slightly in his lab work.
That experience led them to open Loyly, a cold-plunge and sauna lounge where people of all ages take the plunge for better health. “This lifestyle is so good for you,” Cindy said, noting that she gave up alcohol and sugar and has lost 40 pounds.
This nook lined with wood shelving adds a spot for books and objets d ’ art in a home.

IF YOU EAT ONE THING
LATE AUGUST OFFERS A SUSTAINABLE, FARM-TO-TABLE MENU FEATURING FRESH, ORGANIC INGREDIENTS SOURCED FROM LUCILLE’S 1913 FARM.
Michelin-recommended restaurant Late August is rolling out a fresh lineup of lunch and dinner dishes, crafted by chef Sergio Hidalgo and chef Chris Williams. Staying true to its sustainability mission, the restaurant sources ingredients from Lucille’s 1913 farm, a non-profit focused on community food access.
Some of the new dishes hitting the menu include Gulf oysters, roasted squash, grilled eggplant, mustard greens, roasted chicken, seared market fish, and fried tomatillo.
Late August highlights fresh, organic ingredients, especially in dishes labeled "From Our Farm" on the menu. The restaurant also takes sustainability seriously by repurposing food remnants, to ensure nothing goes to waste. Lucille's Hospitality Group even brings the sustainability full circle by returning compost to Lucille’s 1913 farm and turning food scraps into shelf-stable ingredients.
If there's one must-try dish at Late August, it's the roasted squash. Featuring coconut yogurt, pomegranate, and pecan crumble, it perfectly showcases the restaurant's farm-to-table philosophy and dedication to sustainable, flavorful dining. lateaugusthtx.com
THE SQUASH
Chef Chris Williams uses acorn butternut squash and kabocha from his non-profit farm, Lucille’s 1913 Farm.
THE COCONUT YOGURT
The base of the roasted squash dish is scratch-made coconut yogurt. Williams chose coconut yogurt because its sweet tangy flavor balances out the richness of the squash.
THE MIX-INS
Along with two types of squash and a hearty helping of coconut yogurt, the dish contains turmeric garnished with herbs, ginger, cumin, bacon, spices, and pomegranate, each adding to the depth and richness of flavor.
THE PECAN CRUMBLE
Chef Williams tops the roasted squash with a savory pecan crumble to add even more texture to the dish. The pecan crumble is toasted and blended with roasted garlic, rolled oats, and fresh herbs.

ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA
Located along California's Central Coast, Santa Barbara's reputation as a great getaway destination is due to its stunning coastal scenery, great food and wine scene, and Mediterranean-like temperatures. Nestled between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, with a petite size of less than 22 square miles, the coastal city boasts a

larger-than-life hospitality scene, hosting more than 6.2 million visitors annually. People worldwide flock to the "American Riviera" to soak up the only-in-California vibes.
From wellness activities, whale watching, wine tasting, and shopping, we've curated the perfect itinerary for a long weekend in Santa Barbara.
DAY 1
Fly into Los Angeles International Airport or Hollywood Burbank Airport and take a quick, scenic drive to Santa Barbara. Check into the Harbor View Inn, a centrally located waterfront hotel with easy and walkable access to many of the city's main attractions. After checking in, walk across the street to Stearns Wharf, California's oldest working wood wharf. Home to several shops and restaurants, it is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail or grab a bite. Make sure to walk to the end of the wharf for panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and, if the timing is right, catch one of California's vibrant sunsets.
Take a short walk back to Harbor View Inn to rest and prepare for dinner. Fresh seafood is on nearly every menu in Santa Barbara, and Bluewater Grill, a restaurant committed to serving sustainably caught seafood, is a quick walk from the hotel, making it a delicious option for dinner.
DAY 2
Wake up early to miss the crowds at Jeannine's at the Shore, next door to the hotel. A local favorite, the indoor/outdoor cafe serves up hearty breakfast offerings to fuel up for the day on the water.
Mid-February through mid-May, Santa Barbara is an excellent place to get up close to the largest mammals on earth. The city was named a Whale Heritage Area in 2023, making it one of only two in the nation to receive this distinction because of its dedication to fostering appreciation of whales and positively impacting whale conservation. Make a reservation at any whale watching outfitters in the area and be prepared to be amazed at the diverse wildlife living nearby.

After a morning of whale watching, keep the maritime mood going with lunch at The Oyster Bar at Moby Dick on Stearns Wharf and then pop into the Sea Center to get hands-on with sea animals in their touch tanks, and learn more about life in the Pacific Ocean. If time is left, visit the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, offering interactive exhibits detailing the area's coastal history.
As the evening approaches, head back to Harbor View Inn for much-needed relaxation before dinner at Michelin Guide-recommended restaurant, The Lark, where chef Jason Paluska pays homage to seasonal ingredients from California's Central Coast.
DAY 3
After a busy two days, sleep in before enjoying a hearty meal at Helena Avenue Bakery or Shoreline Cafe, each known for its coffee and breakfast options. Discover more of Santa Barbara
with a guided Trolley Tour, offering a comprehensive journey through the city's rich history and iconic landmarks.
Spend a few hours exploring Old Mission Santa Barbara, often referred to as the "Queen of the Missions." Established in 1786, this historic site provides insight into the lives of Spanish settlers and Chumash Indians during the 18th and 19th centuries.
After touring the mission, stop for lunch before heading to State Street, a pedestrian-friendly area known for its diverse shopping options and exclusive California brands.
A visit to Salt Santa Barbara offers a chance to relax in North America's largest Himalayan salt cave, where a 45-minute session offers a rejuvenating break.
To end the day on a high note, explore Santa Barbara's Urban Wine Trail, featuring more than 20 wineries within walking distance, primarily located in the Funk Zone and Presidio neighborhoods.

DESIGN THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR OASIS
ARTICLE BY ALLYSON STRACZEK
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF STRONG LANDSCAPING
TIPS TO INVEST IN A HOME'S OUTDOOR SPACES THAT CREATE BEAUTY, MEMORIES, AND PROPERTY VALUES.
A perfect way to expand a home is to create beautiful and functional outdoor spaces for rest, relaxation, and gatherings. In the long term, effective landscaping can increase property value by adding curb appeal, outdoor living space, and privacy regardless of the size or shape of the home.
We sat down with Thomas Strong of Strong Landscaping, a local Houston premier boutique that offers a full spectrum of professional landscape design, installation, and continuing maintenance services, to discover four ways every homeowner can extend their home beyond the four walls and into the outdoors to invest in property and personal well-being.
Strong Landscaping is dedicated to creating beautiful outdoor spaces for homes, gardens, and commercial properties.
01
MATCH YOUR MAINTENANCE GOALS
DESIGN OUTDOOR SPACES WITH PURPOSE & FUNCTIONALITY
In addition to wanting a beautiful design, it's critical to think beyond the aesthetics and consider a homeowner's stage of life. After looking at the available space, define dining, lounging, and recreation zones for the outside areas. Good landscape design uses pathways, seating nooks, and shade structures to enhance flow that meets a homeowner's needs and creates an outdoor environment that caters to a chosen lifestyle.
Most homeowners are looking for stunning landscapes that are easy to care for, so choosing plants that complement a lifestyle is important. A lush garden oasis is quite beautiful but requires significant upkeep. Incorporating planters or small sections of seasonal flowers keep the yard fresh and eliminate the need for larger, high-maintenance landscaping beds. And with the Houston weather, it's important to consider using plants that can survive the hot summers and unpredictable winters.
03
02
INVEST IN HARDSCAPING FOR DURABILITY
Patios, walkways, and outdoor kitchens improve functionality and longevity. Consider natural stone, pavers, or gravel for an easy-tomaintain foundation. Architectural features such as fire pits, pergolas, and water designs are perfect for adding ambiance outdoors and creating spaces of beauty and gathering.
OPTIMIZE WATERING SCHEDULES
To reduce water waste and promote sustainable gardening practices, adjust watering schedules based on weather forecasts to ensure plants get the right amount of water and reduce water bills. For tech-savvy gardeners, irrigation-focused apps can help monitor and adjust irrigation settings from your phone.

HELPFUL HOME Protection Strategies
With thirteen years of insurance experience, Dustin Harwell, President and CEO of Modern Risk Management, is committed to providing clients with a worry-free financial future.
WHAT INSURANCE POLICIES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR HOME PROTECTION?
Crucial policies include home, umbrella, flood and windstorm insurance.
WHAT MISTAKES DO HOMEOWNERS MAKE WITH INSURANCE?
Focusing on price only. While price is important, the quality of coverage is equally as important. If a claim is necessary, the most significant financial protection is required.
HOW CAN HOMEOWNERS BALANCE COST WITH COVERAGE?
Take advantage of all available discounts and keep a home up to date with the necessary modifications. By shopping policies annually, homeowners get the best possible rate and coverage. This practice prevents overpaying, overinsuring, or even underinsuring assets.
IS PERSONAL LIABILITY COVERAGE ESSENTIAL?
Yes. I recommend maxing out liability limits as the difference between the lowest and highest levels of protection offers very little change in premium.
WHEN SHOULD POLICIES BE UPDATED?
Evaluate policies with every personal life change, such as a new home or car, marital or child status change, and employment transition. Revisit policies during home modifications such as roofing, wiring, or plumbing.
www.modernriskins.com
When choosing an insurance provider, consider their reviews and financial ratings. A strong reputation and prompt response to claims enhances a homeowner’s experience during a difficult and confusing time. To find the appropriate coverage, work with an advisor on home, flood coverage, and auto liability limits using top-rated industry technology to prevent overpaying for protection.
