IF YOU EAT ONE THING

EXPERIENCE GEORGIA JAMES’ MODERN CUISINE, AWARD-WINNING WINE, AND EXCEPTIONAL DESSERTS.

Located just off Buffalo Bayou Park; a newly reimagined Georgia James welcomes guests for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. The creators and management team behind Bari Ristorante redesigned the restaurant, while Master Chefs Renato de Pirro and Philippe Schmit created new, updated menus. The latest offerings feature an array of fresh additions to make Georgia James a Modern American restaurant with culinary influences from the West Coast, France, and Europe. Boasting more than 500 selections from around the world, the wine program at Georgia James, a recipient of Wine Spectator’s, “Best of Award of Excellence” since 2020, will continue under the expert guidance of Fremmiot Rodriguez. Guests should expect to go for the food and ambiance, stay for the wine, and leave room for dessert. georgiajamessteak.com

THE PANNA COTTA

“Blueberries, a delightful winter fruit, serve as the perfect inspiration for this dish,” said chef Renato de Pirro. “Every component

of the dessert is crafted to celebrate and elevate the essence of the blueberry—from the creamy panna cotta to the vibrant gelée and the delicate garnish. Its silky, velvety texture melts in your mouth, perfectly complementing the bright, vibrant, and crisp flavor of the blueberries for an exceptional and balanced dessert experience.”

THE SAUCE

The sauce is a blueberry gelée, a French-inspired preparation where the fruit is puréed and gently set to achieve a delicate and silky gelatin. “This intensifies the vibrant blueberry flavor to complement the panna cotta,” said de Pirro.

THE TOPPINGS

The blueberry panna cotta is finished with a dollop of freshly whipped cream, accented by blueberries and a garnish of caramelized sugar. According to the chef, the sugar adds “both visual appeal and a satisfying crunch element.”

2025 HOME TRENDS: TIPS FROM HOUSTON’S EXPERTS

LOCAL EXPERTS PROVIDE GUIDANCE ON REAL ESTATE, HOME DESIGN, HARDWARE, LIGHTING, AND FITTINGS, HELPING HOMEOWNERS ENHANCE THEIR STYLE AND BOOST THEIR PROPERTY VALUE.

Houston specialists in real estate, home design, craftsmanship, hardware, and lighting give tips on upgrading your home’s style and value using the latest trends. Learn how small changes to spaces, plumbing, hardware, cabinetry, and furnishings inside and outside instantly add efficiency and luxury that reflect current design and let your personality shine through. Experts provide advice on how to embrace the outdoors inside the house. Don’t miss real estate experts’ latest guidance on buying and selling a luxury home.

“Think about how your home could be more efficient to feel like a space you love to call home.”

HOW CAN READERS APPROACH HOME RENOVATIONS IN 2025?

Start by deciding how you want to make your house a home. Think about how your home could be more efficient and make it feel like a space you love to call home and spend time in. Here are a few questions to think through when renovating a home. Do you want a kitchen that fosters daily family time? Do you need a sanctuary master bath that rescues you from the stress of long days? What are the most used items in your closet, and how do you accommodate them more efficiently through design? Do you want to incorporate a mudroom in your laundry room?

WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO REVIVE A SPACE IN THE HOME?

The best way to revive a space with minimum hassle is to change faucets, hardware, and lighting. These items reflect design trends during installation and can look old and tired if not correctly maintained. They are easy to swap out to make your home feel fresh and new. If you are more adventurous, changing the countertops and sinks can freshen up a space quickly.

HOW MUCH DO FIXTURES AND LIGHTING MATTER IN A HOME?

Plumbing, hardware, and lighting convey a home’s price point and overall quality. They can also become part of our disposable society mindset. Faucets should be changed frequently to avoid frustration and potential damage to your home. Homeowners should wipe faucets off daily and wax them quarterly. Invest in durable products with an expected long life span to avoid issues. A smart tip is to select timeless designs with a design professional.

“The openconcept design trend is being reimagined to incorporate multifunctional and cozy living spaces that align with our cordless lifestyles.”

WHAT ARE SOME TRENDS IN HOME RENOVATION IN 2025?

Incorporating natural textures, such as stain-grade cabinetry made from white oak and walnut, is popular. Stained cabinetry is often paired with painted millwork. For example, the millwork and doors may be painted, while the kitchen cabinets are stained. Another example is having a stained kitchen island with the surrounding cabinetry painted. This design approach can also be applied to built-in bookshelves in a living room.

Another trend is using hidden doors to conceal clutter. This can be a desk nook in the living area and a wine room/bar adjacent to the formal dining room. In 2024, our team even designed a “speakeasy.” Another way of hiding clutter is to include a “scullery” in a kitchen remodel. This “room” is attached to the kitchen for storage, countertop space, and possibly a second working sink. Maintaining a clean appearance is essential as kitchens are now integrated into living spaces.

An interesting trend to watch is the evolution of the open-concept design. It is being reimagined to incorporate multifunctional and cozy living spaces that align with our cordless lifestyles.

WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO REVIVE AND REFRESH A SPACE?

I’m always surprised how changing door hardware (doorknobs and hinges) for interior doors impacts the home. Plus, the selection of cabinetry hardware can elevate the finishing touches. A high-quality paint job can revitalize a home, while poor-quality painting due to inadequate preparation can have lasting negative effects.

JACKSON GILLETTE

HOW ARE HOMEOWNERS USING OUTDOOR SPACES IN HOME RENOVATION?

This trend is in full swing. Homeowners are adding, enlarging, and replacing windows facing the backyard of a home with full-view windows. Other examples are installing large sliding patio doors or large stacking door systems and creating or enlarging covered areas in the backyard.

“Your dream home is a feeling. Every home symbolizes new beginnings—celebrations, shared meals, and dreams coming to life.”

DAISY PRAT Bilingual Real Estate Expert,  The Agency Team

WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT REAL ESTATE?

As a bilingual real estate expert, I help individuals and families find their dream homes and guide investors to create generational wealth. Every home symbolizes new beginnings—celebrations, shared meals, and dreams coming to life. Contributing to these moments fuels my dedication and passion.

WHAT ARE TIPS FOR READERS SELLING A HOME?

1. Embrace Strategic Staging. Buyers envision a lifestyle. Declutter, neutralize colors, and use modern decor to evoke comfort and luxury.

2. Prioritize Curb Appeal. Enhance your home’s exterior with fresh landscaping, a polished front door, and updated lighting.

3. Leverage Cutting-Edge Marketing. Partner with an agent who utilizes professional photography, drone footage, and virtual tours to highlight your home.

4. Price It Right. Rely on your agent’s expertise to analyze trends and accurately price your home.

5. Highlight Unique Features. Every home tells a story. Highlight what makes yours unique — like a stunning view or a chef’s kitchen. Luxury buyers appreciate aspirational details.

6. Partner with the Right Real Estate Agent. Work with someone who understands your goals and communicates effectively. When you prepare with intention, your home captures the heart of the right buyer.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR BUYING A HOME?

Start by clarifying your reasons for buying.

1. Identify Your Values: Luxury is about comfort, not just price. Focus on features that enhance your lifestyle and happiness.

2. Be Prepared: In a fast market, get pre-approved, know your budget, and partner with an expert to act quickly.

3. Think Long-Term: Look beyond size and finishes. Ensure the home aligns with your future vision and enhances daily life.

4. Trust Your REALTOR®: Choose a trusted agent who understands and guides your goals.

5. Savor the Journey: Amid the logistics, take time to enjoy the experience. Celebrate each milestone as you embark on this new chapter.

“Trends I see in buying and selling homes are contemporary, sleek architectural designs, including kitchens, baths, and lighted wine storage.”

MARTHA WHITE REALTOR®, BHGRE Gary

WHY ARE YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT WORKING IN REAL ESTATE?

I love helping people find their next special place in life. Meeting my client’s dreams and needs is my greatest joy and satisfaction. As a native Houstonian, I am proud to show buyers and sellers all the wonders and places Houston offers.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE LATEST HOME TRENDS IN 2025?

The trends I see in buying and selling homes are contemporary, sleek architectural designs, including kitchens, baths, lighted wine storage, and display areas. Large walls of windows to let natural light abound and touches of gold accents in hardware and lighting.

WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO REVIVE OR REFRESH A SPACE?

To make the most impact of some easy/ relatively inexpensive updates or refreshing, update dated fixtures and lighting. Current design magazines are a great place to go for ideas. You can visit a plumbing/lighting showroom in Houston and take clues from newly constructed homes. Decluttering is also an immediate update. Consider making an impact with one or two show-stopping contemporary pieces of art or furniture.

WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR COLORS CURRENTLY TRENDING IN HOME DESIGN AND DECOR?

Medium to lighter natural wood tones, metallic gold accents in hardware, lighting, and tile inserts. Accent walls or rooms of intense, rich color, including dark blues, deep greens, or rich reddish pinks/purples. Homeowners are tired of everything grey/ whitewashed. People want a WOW factor in their home for others to see and enjoy. Excitement and sophistication are key.

VISUAL NARRATIVES

Interior designer Katie Davis matches décor to each home’s ‘story.’

Katie Davis may not have been thinking about interior design when she watched her parents’ kitchen get remodeled and she may not have imagined who created the beautiful spaces in shelter magazines she loved to peruse.

A sisal rug and sea grass window shades add natural elements to this bedroom. Photo by Nathan Schroder
“We think every house has a story. If it’s a traditional-style home, what is its feel? If it has paneling and brass fixtures, what are we going to

put

with it? Once we know how the home will be used, we talk about color and patterns, which we use in all of our work.”
—Katie Davis

But years later, when she and her husband, Billy Davis, an attorney, got their first home, she knew exactly how to express her own sense of style. It impressed friends, too, because they frequently asked for help choosing tile and paint colors. When her husband told her she was spending enough time on it that she should get paid for it, she agreed. She thought it might just be a side hustle while raising kids – they’re now 8 and 11 – but within six months, her Katie Davis Design business was a full-time job. Katie is the newest honoree in the Houston Design District’s Leaders In Design program.

Now her business focuses on residential design, and ranges from helping clients with furnishings as well as remodeling jobs and full-home new construction.

“We think every house has a story. If it’s a traditional-style home, what is its feel? If it has paneling and brass fixtures, what are we going to put with it?” Katie said. “Once we know how the home will be used, we talk about color and patterns, which we use in all of our work.”

In addition to creating functional kitchens, beautiful living rooms and cozy bedrooms, Katie said that many clients are asking for something dramatically different: secret spaces, such as play spaces or storage rooms with hidden doors.

Pantries have become more important, too, with clients asking for amped up pantries that serve as caterers’ kitchens.

Cozy spots such as this one created by Katie Davis Design are increasingly popular options. Photo by Kerry Kirk

EFFORTLESS STYLE FOR EVERY ADVENTURE

Foreign Fare’s latest collection features designs perfect for spring travel adventures.

Curating the ultimate travel wardrobe is an art form where the key lies in picking pieces that check all the right boxes. Clothing should combine feather-light packability with rugged durability—ideal for breezy packing and long-lasting wear. Wrinkle-resistant fabrics like nylon and polyester are excellent travel companions, because they are low-maintenance and always ready for action. And don't forget versatility—styles that effortlessly transition from casual sightseeing to elegant dinners are suitcase gold, freeing up precious space for souvenirs (or more shoes).

While these tips are commonplace, finding the right brand of travel clothing essentials can be difficult, and that

A HEALTHIER HOME AND KITCHEN BEGINS WITH WOODEN, CHEMICAL-FREE UTENSILS.

Wooden kitchen utensils have played a role in culinary traditions for centuries. Their functionality and sustainability have made them a mainstay in kitchens across the globe.

PHOTOGRAPHY

SMALL CHANGES IN YOUR HOME CAN LEAD TO BIG RESULTS

Wooden utensils are a practical choice for various cooking tasks because they resist heat and protect nonstick surfaces. Unlike synthetic cookware, which often contains harmful chemicals, wooden utensils offer an eco-friendly alternative perfect for an environmentally conscious home.

By switching to natural, responsibly sourced materials, users can reduce their exposure to harmful substances and minimize waste. Many manufacturers have committed to producing high-quality utensils made from renewable resources like teak wood. Using woodbased utensils supports recycling efforts and contributes to a more sustainable lifestyle. This simple change in the kitchen can positively impact personal health. By choosing natural materials over synthetic ones, kitchen enthusiasts can take a small but meaningful step toward a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

Experience stunning, lesser-known destinations on an unforgettable sailing adventure.

Ready to ditch the usual travel plans and make waves instead? Some of the world's most bucket-list-worthy destinations are best explored by boat. The best part is that many of these spots are delightfully under the radar for most American travelers, making them more enjoyable to explore.

A sailing vacation is easier than you might think, especially when working with a charter company that specializes in sea-based vacations. To experience these farflung destinations, no sailing experience is required with Dream Yacht Worldwide (DYW) as they offer opportunities for all types of travelers. Experienced sailors take advantage of Dream Yacht's bareboat option while solo travelers and couples with no sailing experience can book a private cabin in one of the company's planned charter itineraries and travel with other vacationers on spacious catamarans. DYW also offers the opportunity for groups or families to book a private boat for their charter vacation at sea with the option of a skipper to sail.

Cabin charters provide the opportunity to explore beautiful destinations without the need for any sailing experience.

2025'S BEST SAILING DESTINATIONS

INSTEAD OF THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, VISIT SEYCHELLES

Seychelles offers one of the world's finest sailing grounds and is known for its picture-perfect tropical islands and sandy beaches. Seychelles is home to famous giant tortoises, granite rock formations, and spectacular pristine beaches.

INSTEAD OF THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, VISIT THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

The British Virgin Islands are the ideal location for a Caribbean yacht charter with beautiful isles, a lively party atmosphere, and a genuine Caribbean welcome from the locals. In fact, with gentle trade winds, easy line-ofsight navigation, and short-leg island hopping voyages, it's arguably one of the best sailing destinations in the world.

INSTEAD OF GREECE, VISIT CROATIA

Croatia is having a big sailing and tourism moment this year, and sailing is one of the best ways to enjoy the entire country in one trip. Croatia's stunning historic coastlines offer guests an Adriatic sea experience like no other, with the opportunity to explore more than 1,200 islands while enjoying the warm Mediterranean climate and spectacular views. The Adriatic is the perfect location for those who love island hopping, and sailing around Croatia gives you the opportunity to experience the country's beauty from a unique perspective.

INNOVATION MEETS

ARTISTRY

Kitchen design has entered a transformative era, where innovation meets artistry to create spaces that are not only functional but also personal and sustainable. With advancements in technology, materials and craftsmanship, today’s kitchens are tailored to meet the evolving needs and tastes of homeowners.

According to interior designer Laura McCroskey, kitchens today are about more than just cooking—they’re an expression of personal lifestyle.

“Kitchen design has entered an exciting time where the possibilities feel limitless,” says McCroskey. “For me, the design process starts before lines are ever drawn on a construction document. I believe in creating spaces that enhance life, both functionally and aesthetically. The design process begins with a discussion about what a space needs to do, and what aesthetic will bring a spark to the homeowner. I also firmly believe that when designing a kitchen, one should walk out a recipe to make sure everything is in the right place to

suit one’s lifestyle. Cooking zones are imperative to a well-designed kitchen.”

Modern kitchens emphasize zoning, or the creation of dedicated areas for preparation, cooking and storage, to enhance workflow and functionality. These zones not only improve efficiency but also contribute to a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic.

Cutting-edge rendering software, utilizing technology similar to that used in gaming, allows homeowners to visualize their dream kitchens in hyper-realistic detail. While these tools inspire creativity, McCroskey advises balancing ambitious ideas with practical implementation to achieve the best results.

Technology, sustainability and customization are driving the revolution in kitchen design. Advanced appliances are at the forefront, enhancing convenience while aligning with a growing emphasis on eco-friendliness.

“From vacuum-sealing drawers that preserve food and reduce waste to smart appliances controlled by your

THE HEART OF THE HOME

phone, the emphasis is on efficiency and sustainability. Functional storage built seamlessly into marble countertops and oversized workstation sinks are making daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. Thoughtful features like composting compartments and advanced food preservation methods reflect a broader effort to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.”

Custom cabinetry that maximizes every inch of space minimizes waste while optimizing functionality.

Style trends are no longer as rigid—whether you prefer modern, transitional, or traditional designs, you can create a kitchen tailored to your unique vision. There’s no limit to what you can achieve with today’s tools and technologies. The goal is to create spaces that resonate deeply with the people who live in them.”

The kitchen is the heart of every home and represents a space of endless possibility. Whether your aesthetic leans modern, farmhouse or somewhere in between, the tools and technologies available today make it easier than ever to bring your vision to life.
