THROUGHOUT OUR LIVES, WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING OR SOMEONE TO INSPIRE US. For the young girls in our community, they are lucky to have two women who have made it their mission to not only inspire but to empower them. ĒVLV founders Lauryn Hutchinson and Breiana White have made this their mission with their RVA-based, female dedicated soccer program. "This is their space, dedicated to nurture and train the female mind, body and soul," Lauryn says. ĒVLV's tailored training programs for female soccer athletes range from ages 5 through 22 years old, including pro and international. For Lauryn, the ĒVLV journey began at age 5. "I saw a bunch of kids playing soccer, and I said, 'I don't know what they are doing, but that's what I want to do the rest of my life.'" Lauryn met her athletic career pinnacle as a defender for Trinidad and Tobago's Senior Women's National Team, an inspiration to the young girls she coaches. The young female athletes of ĒVLV hosted watch parties to cheer on Coach Lauryn as she played in the World Cup Qualifying Games. The young athletes whom they train are in awe of the talent and energy Lauryn and Breiana exude. On her Instagram post, Lauryn proclaims, “Grateful for everything! Entitled to nothing!” This humility is engrained in the athletes they train. Both Lauryn and Breiana have experienced the pain of injury, rejection and defeat. They know that if reality is not in check that it can be crushing to the self-esteem. “You are a person before you are a soccer player," Lauryn says. "That’s what we try and get them to understand because if they get

cut from a team or injured or some other setback happens, we don’t want them feeling like their whole life is destroyed.” She is clear to stress the importance of understanding that soccer is what you do, not who you are. The way our children play sports is a mirror to how we want our children to live their life. We want them to be confident resilient, strong and skilled. With this in mind, ĒVLV's mission is female empowerment and aligned athletic vision. Lauryn and Breiana understand that to create an empowered athlete, there must first be an empowered person. "You train the person first, get to know the girl, help her figure out who she is, then we coach the athlete inside the girl. Mental health is important, nutrition is important; the soccer part comes last," Lauryn says.
“ To m e , t h e def inition of coaching success i s t h e a b i l i ty t o bring each child to the best of their athletic and mental potential. Lauryn teaches children to b e l i eve i n t h e i r o w n strength. It is a rare a n d b e a u t i f u l g i f t .”
It is this mindset that has set these women apart from the regular soccer programs in the eyes of not only the players but the parents of their players. "To me, the definition of coaching success is the ability to bring each child to the best of their athletic and mental potential. Lauryn teaches children to believe in their own strength. It is a rare and beautiful gift," parent Lila LaCroix says. Lauryn and Breiana have big plans for ĒVLV athletes. ĒVLV is fundraising to complete installation for Richmond's first "all-in-one" female performance training facility. The 3,000-square-foot gym located inside Sports Center of Richmond includes training fields, a weight-training station, academic study space, a nutrition fuel bar and an injury prevention/recovery station. You can sample ĒVLV's awe-inspiring leadership, observe motivated ĒVLV athletes and enjoy Lauryn and Breaina's adrenaline-pumping action-sequences at ĒVLV's Instagram page: @evlvempire. EVLVEmpire.com
Ē V LV Tr a ve l s t o Wo r l d C u p ! Recently, ĒVLV hosted American-born Jamaican footballer Lauren Silver and is scheduled to participate in this summer's FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. To observe soccer at its highest level, 14 ĒVLV athletes will attend the World Cup in France this June. "Our girls met and trained with Lauren Silver. Now they will watch her play in France! It's surreal!" Lauryn says. While in France, ĒVLV athletes will play four international matches and train with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), a professional soccer club. AUDIT YOUR INNER CIRCLE Make sure you are around people who inspire you and challenge you. LIVE OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE Always challenge yourself and push your greatness. EMBRACE YOUR PROCESS Not spending too much time in others. BE HAPPY BUT NEVER SATISFIED Love the victories, but always raise the bar once you have achieved something. GRATEFUL FOR EVERYTHING, ENTITLED TO NOTHING Never expect something just because you put the work in. May 2019 | Midlothian Lifestyle

Leslie Haley BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, Midlothian District
Leslie is a principal of Park Haley, LLP. In 2010, she was a recipient for the Influential Women of Virginia award. Currently, she serves on the Board of Supervisors in Chesterfield County representing the Midlothian District. LESLIE HALEY’S LIFE LESSON: CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY Leslie says her idea of civic responsibility is intertwined with building relationships. These two ideas serve as the foundation on which Leslie has built her personal and political career. “Even during undergrad, I had the desire to give back in a way that would allow me to be impactful in the world, meaning that I could effectuate change in ways that others could not.” As a result, Leslie earned her law degree where she practiced in the areas of family law and real estate before establishing her own law firm with a focus on ethics, in addition to guardian ad litem work advocating on behalf of children. Leslie observes there are two primary types of people: on-lookers and doers. “You can be involved in the world, or you can live through the world,” she says. “I want to be involved in the world, and law is a path that has assisted me in helping others. I listen and make decisions on behalf of people who would not otherwise always have a voice to be heard.” Whether it was volunteering at her daughter’s elementary school or serving on the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors, Leslie has a track record of dedication to public service. She understands the adage “It takes a village,” which is why she bestows such high value on civic responsibility and building relationships.

Kathy Pearson COO/CFO OF EAST WEST PARTNERS, the award-winning developer of several of Midlothian’s most iconic master-planned communities: Brandermill, Woodlake & Hallsley
Kathy Pearson is a Richmond native since 1977. A mother of two and a grandmother of two, besides being part of East West for 40 years, Kathy has held many other respected titles, which currently include Massey Cancer Center Advisory Board Member. KATHY’S LIFE LESSON: LIVING FOR “HERE AND NOW” Kathy’s father is integral to how she appreciates the “here and now.” “[He] died when I was 12 after a five-year battle with kidney disease. His death shaped my life in a number of ways,” she says. Kathy recalls two important factors related to the “here and now,” which are related to time and tenacity. Regarding time, Kathy knows that life is short and can end unexpectedly, so appreciating life moments and her family is at the top of Kathy’s priority list. Regarding tenacity, Kathy says of her father, “He taught me that I could do whatever I want to do.” Remembering his encouragement, Kathy pushed herself to succeed in school, business and family. “I was fortunate to be part of a corporate culture that encouraged [work/life] balance.” Since 1979, Kathy has worked with East West Communities, which supports the National Kidney Foundation. Heralded as a Corporate Citizen, East West promotes philanthropic participation to include golf tournaments, walk-a-thons, galas and kidney health screenings. Kathy encourages Midlothian friends and associates to consider future patron opportunities with the Massey Cancer Center Immuno-Onclogy

Amanda Moore FOUNDER of Richmond Mom Prom and Hampton Roads Mom Prom
Amanda Moore is a blogger and social outreach extraordinaire known for organizing and calling attention to local fundraising efforts under the moniker The Pay It Forward Mom. She has been a Midlothian resident for nine years. She also is the founder and promoter of the ninth annual Richmond-based Mom Prom, which is a funfilled fundraising event dedicated to in-need children. AMANDA’S LIFE LESSON: DEDICATION AND PERSISTENCE Amanda says when Mom Prom was inaugurated that progress was slow. “It was attended by 30 women and raised just over $900 ... There were many times I felt it was too much work with little reward to our beneficiary.” To date, Mom Prom has raised more than $325,000 for a variety of charitable foundations, including Massey Cancer Center (pediatric division), Cerebral Palsy Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Richmond, The Jack and Abby Neonatal Foundation, Fanconi Anemia Research Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Due to Mom Prom’s in-demand success, a second event was created in Hampton Roads, which benefits the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk. Regarding the life lesson of dedication and persistence, Amanda says, “I’ve been able to serve so many sick and in-need children through [Richmond Mom Prom] ... Seeing the money we work so hard for in action is ... incredible. You can make a huge difference in this world if you work hard and never give up.” Amanda attributes her success to an equally dedicated team of women inspired by volunteerism and strong work ethics. The 2019 Mom Prom fundraiser was held on March 23. Those interested in fun and fundraising in 2020 may visit the Richmond Mom Prom Facebook page for additional information.

Anne Moss Rogers Anne Moss Rogers’ healing journey began after losing her son, Charles, to suicide. Now, her healing journey inspires thousands who encounter similar life challenges. ANNE MOSS’ LIFE LESSON: HUMILITY AND EMPATHY Before Charles’ suicide, Anne was unaware of the invisible emotional struggle that isolates those who contemplate suicide as a solution to their pain. After Charles’ suicide, she studied the “why” behind this cause of death. “It brought me to my knees, face-to-face with humility. I had to accept loss to move forward.” Anne broaches the taboo topics of suicide, addiction, mental illness and grief, taking her followers on an emotionally raw, personal experience. “My purpose found me, but it had the biggest price imaginable,” Anne says of losing her son. Ann is a high-profile mental health advocate in the Richmond area who sold her marketing company in 2017 to focus full-time on mental health and suicide prevention advocacy after her son took his own life. She seeks to inspire positive change in others. “You can’t be a leader unless you have empathy,” she says. With an empathic mindset, Anne creates awareness and support through connection and shared experiences. She allows herself to be emotionally naked in her speaking and writing to inspire vulnerability and subsequent healing in others. “I talk about things I’m not proud of about myself. And I tell the story of when I learned a lesson.” Through her shared stories, Anne hopes to reduce incidents of suicide by erasing the associated stigma. A TEDx and motivational speaker, Anne is also the owner of the popular blog Emotionally Naked. Her published book will be available in October 2019. To connect with Anne, visit EmotionallyNaked.com and email her via the contact form.

The Surprising Benefits of Play HOW PLAYTIME AFFECTS A CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT
FRED ROGERS, THE LATE HOST OF THE LONG-RUNNING CHILDREN’S SHOW MR. ROGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, ONCE SAID THAT “PLAY IS REALLY THE WORK OF CHILDHOOD.” It’s true: Just as work is important for any adult’s success and sense of well-being, play is a crucial aspect of a child’s development. Why? For almost as many reasons as there are ways to play! Play offers an unbeatable chance for parents and caregivers to connect with their child, teaching them the rules and expectations of being part of both a family and a community. Meanwhile, as children grow and their experiences expand beyond their immediate family, play helps to teach them how to act around others, along with how they prefer to be treated themselves. Engaging in play also fosters a child’s creativity and self-expression, helping them develop strong and healthy personalities. Different types of play and different types of playtime activities can impact a wide range of early childhood development attributes from technical skills such as reading comprehension, problem-solving and growing their vocabulary, to emotional skills such as strategies for dealing with and reducing anxiety and stress. Play helps children increase their knowledge base, too—or as the Children’s Museum says, "When children play ahead, they get ahead." Recent research makes clear that play has a positive impact
